Victorian SMEs Collaborate On Additive Manufacturing The DMTC Additive Manufacturing Benchmarking project has brought together a number of Victorian based SMEs to benchmark and develop additive manufacturing capability. The project is supported by the Victorian Governments Manufacturing Productivity Network Grant and aims to raise the overall capability of participating companies through research and collaboration. Additive manufacturing is a very useful process for creating components with complex geometries. However limitations in machine finishing capabilities must still be considered when designing such components. Bauer Engineering is a participating SME and through the project has developed a new capability to finish machine parts created using additive manufacturing. Bauer Engineering’s participation in this collaboration has led to the company securing a new contract to finish machine components for a local Victorian business.

Selecting a 3D Printer: The Hobbyist vs. Professional Dilemma Dominic Parsonson

3D Printing or Additive Manufacturing is a current and valuable tool in the manufacturing and designing arena. 3D Printing often conjures up the image of a nascent technology that still has many hurdles to address before it can become a relevant industrial tool. This is not the case. 3D Printing has been around since the mid-1990s as a useable tool, with the first printers developed in the 1980s. The idea that 3D Printers are a new technology was driven by the start of the Open Source movement in the mid-2000s and an increase in media exposure over the last 5 years. Initially 3D Printing was promoted for rapid prototyping, and unfortunately this misconception continues to stick, even though technology has advanced to such a stage that 3D Printers are used for the production of end-use parts and many other functional applications. Selecting a 3D Printer When first setting out to choose a 3D Printer you may naturally ask “Which is the best 3D Printer?” Fortunately or unfortunately there is no such thing, and realistically the answer is “It depends”… MORE

It's futile having an idea if there is no execution A lot of people think of an idea and think it's the best idea every thought of (chances are it probably is) but it's worth nothing with out executing it. 3DSL can help you through all stages of the product development process, whether you are having trouble with technical issues from a mechanical or thermal point of view, you aren't conversant with the latest CAD software, maybe you want to build a fully working prototype, perhaps just a visual concept prototype, or maybe you just need help marketing your product or seeking interest from investors. 3D Space Lab can help you. "Million dollar ideas are a dime a dozen. The determination to see the idea through is what’s priceless. -Robert Dieffenbach". We don't know who Robert Dieffenback is, but he makes a cracking point… MORE First-class honours degree educated from Plymouth University, UK, and straight out of university with the job title 'Spacecraft Thermal Engineer', Iain Gilmour began making his contribution to engineering, both on and off the planet, in 2001.
