Extreme Redesign 2014 Stratasys announced the opening of its 2014 Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge. Now in its tenth year, the contest invites students worldwide to submit inventive new product designs, redesigns of existing products, or original or redesigned works of art or architecture. Designs are created on 3D CAD software. Students at the middle school, high school and college level are eligible to participate in the design challenge, and the winning submissions are awarded with scholarship money. “The Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge not only offers students a chance to win scholarship money by putting their creativity and critical thinking skills to the test,” says Stratasys Executive Vice President of Marketing Jon Cobb, “but it gives the rest of us a glimpse of the exciting possibilities coming from this future generation of inventors, designers and entrepreneurs.”

molders in mind.” Sepro and Stäubli have been cooperating successfully since 2006, with Sepro integrating the Stäubli multi-axis robots when those capabilities were required. Now they have taken that relationship a step further. THE 6X VISUAL LINE The 6X Visual line of robots combines a Stäubli 6-axis articulated-arm robot with the Sepro Visual 3 control to deliver a general-purpose automation solution in five models to serve injection molding machines from 20 to 4000 tons. The 6X Visual range is capable of performing almost any task from simple pick-and-place or complex path tracking applications thanks to the powerful and user-friendly Visual 3 control system. With Visual 3, Sepro’s proprietary and very adaptable control, it is very simple to program a multi-axis robot on an injection-molding machine. Many 6 axis robots require outside programmers, Sepro Visual allow that to be done in house at reduced cost Visual controls make it simple and intuitive to create almost any program, even complex cycles requiring path tracking, flaming, part outlining, and so on. Processors who are already familiar with the Visual control platform will find that very little additional training is required to become proficient at programming multi-axis robots for injection molding. Small and medium-sized robots (6X-60 to 6X-200) have a fully enclosed and naturally clean structure that meets ISO 5 and IP 65 standards for clean room applications in the medical and electronic industries. The largest unit, the 6X-340, is specially adapted to service a large work envelope for molding machines up to 3500 tons. The arms can be mounted on the machine platen to minimize floor space requirements or next to the machine to work with peripheral equipment. Most of the models (6X-60 to 6X-200) can be suspended from the ceiling and the 6X-60 and 6X-90 can be wall mounted.

The 6X-60 is intended for use with molding machines from 20 to 100 tons. Maximum reach for the standard and extendedarm versions are 670 to 920 mm (26 to 36 in.) and maximum payloads are 9 and 5 kg (20 and 11 lb) respectively.

3D mapping is a `Pisa` cake for Aussie scientists
Australian researchers have created the first ever interior 3D map of Italy’s iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa by using a breakthrough mobile laser mapping system. Developed by the CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, the Zebedee technology is a handheld 3D mapping system incorporating a laser scanner that sways on a spring to capture millions of detailed measurements of a site as fast as an operator can walk through it. Specialised software then converts the system's laser data into a detailed 3D map. While the tower's cramped stairs and complex architecture have prevented previous mapping technologies from capturing its interior, Zebedee has enabled the researchers to finally create the first comprehensive 3D map of the entire building. "This technology is ideal for cultural heritage mapping, which is usually very time consuming and labour intensive." Dr Jonathan Roberts "This technology is ideal for cultural heritage mapping, which is usually very time consuming and labour intensive. It can often take a whole research team a number of days or weeks to map a site with the accuracy and detail of what we can produce in a few hours," said Dr Jonathan Roberts, Research Program Leader at CSIRO’s Computational Informatics Division. "Within 20 minutes we were able to use Zebedee to complete an entire scan of the building’s interior. This allowed us to create a uniquely comprehensive and accurate 3D map of the tower's structure and composition, including small details in the stairs and stonework." During 'Project Pisa', CSIRO also collaborated with local Italian scientists from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA) who believe the research will have significant impact on preserving the cultural heritage of the site. "Our detailed record of the Leaning Tower of Pisa may one day be critical in being able to reconstruct the site if it was to suffer catastrophic damage due to natural disasters such as a fire or an earthquake. Having a detailed 3D model of the world’s most significant cultural heritage sites could also be used to allow people who cannot physically visit these sites to better understand and appreciate their history and architecture," said Franco Tecchia, Assistant Professor at the PERCRO - Perceptual Robotics lab. In 2012, CSIRO through its Digital Productivity and Services Flagship worked with 3D Laser Mapping, a global developer of laser scanning solutions to commercialise the Zebedee research into the ZEB1 product. As well as its applications in cultural heritage, ZEB1 is also being used to increase efficiencies and improve productivity in a number of different industries. For example, the technology is already assisting mining companies to better manage their operations and helping security forces to quickly scan crime scenes. CSIRO's Zebedee research was recently awarded a 2013 Eureka Prize, often referred to as an 'Australian Oscar of Science', for Innovative Use of Technology. The Australian national science agency's breakthrough 3D mapping system was also recently recognised as the winner of the Research and Development category at the iAwards, Australia's premier ICT awards program.

Keech aims to match 3D printing with existing materials know-how Last month the Victorian government announced the Bendigo-based company – which manufactures products including ground-engaging tools for mining and agriculture, and rolling stock for rail – had been awarded a $141,700 Investing In Manufacturing Technology grant.“We have some room to make some final decisions over the next few weeks,” Keech’s CEO Herbert Hermens told Manufacturers’ Monthly, shortly after the announcement.“And we want to make sure that we choose the best technology available and as a consequence we’ll be going over to Europe to make some final decisions, to visit some factories and have a look at some different technologies.”Keech is already using additive manufacturing, though plans to invest in additional machines with greater capabilities, for prototyping, patternmaking and end use parts. It will spend around half a million dollars in addition to the grant.“Firstly it will allow us to make prototype models, full-size, quickly,” explained Hermens of the ways the investment would change the way the company innovates.“We can really create things and see them properly and understand the interaction of the various parts.“Another good part of it is it allows us to make patterns a lot more efficiently and quickly and as a result get the product to market more quickly.”In terms of materials, the company does not want to lock itself out of any options.Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is being strongly considered and has been suitable for many of the applications Keech has put it to so far. It plans to continue exploring its options with a trip to Europe to meet with additive manufacturing firms.“And right now we haven’t made final decisions because we want the most flexible possibility we can get,” said Hermens.“There are some machines out there that can print in about eight or nine materials and we’re looking at those, to ensure we get as much flexibility.”As with its main business, creating ground engaging tools for the mining industry, the company sees the materials science and ability to perform a certain job better than another solution as what’s important.“The key, the IP will sit in the materials, the final types of materials that you use and manipulate to get right... And again, we think this opportunity exists also in this printing technology, where we can bring to bear our understanding of material properties and make sure we then get a very flexible development.“Because, let’s face it, in time, whether it’s one year from now or ten years from now, the printing technology, the quality - you can buy a little 3D printer for $1,000 now, you know that - but the quality printers which cost tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars will soon come down to the market price where lots of people can afford them. So where’s the IP going to sit? The IP’s going to sit in the materials.” I.
As a 3D printing service, this will be offered through patternmaking subsidiary BPM 3D (Keech's other units include Keech Castings and Keech Mining Supplies).

Hermens believes that Keech’s location in central Victoria will mean its sophisticated additive manufacturing technology would be attractive to neighbouring businesses in the region, and be made available to them, though the Keech has no plans to start competing with rapid prototyping bureaus.

“Certainly we’ll be focussed on regional Victoria to ensure that we support the development of manufacturing and keeping manufacturing here in regional Australia,” he said.
“It’s part of what we have committed to do as a company already in many areas of our business. And this is one of them. TRAVEL NEWS Our staff are often on the move gathering knowledge to pass on to our clients Brent has just returned from a northern summer holiday in the Russian Arctic which included two weeks on a Russian icebreaker with scientists who took him to some pretty wild areas of the Russian far East. Graeme has been on a river cruise on the Danube, from the mouth of the Black Sea to Vienna followed by some travel to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich, Nuremberg and Rothenberg. Paul has been again to the USA to tour the west and visit friends on the east coast. Helen has just returned from Italy and escorting tours in Iran. Nadine has been to visit relatives in Germany and Spain and Giuseppe has also been in France and Italy.
