Newsletter SUMMER/XMAS 2012
As we accelerate to the close of 2012... ...I would like to reflect on a year which had many of our good customers delay or even shelve some great development projects both in the resource recovery and mining industries. The factors which influenced their decisions were fundamentally a result of conditions out of our control and generally based on the global demand for commodities and raw materials. We have all read and heard about the sovereign debt problems in Europe, how the recovery of the US economy is slower than expected and the enormous appetite of China is finally abating. These issues cause concern amongst the resource developers and financiers and bullish expansion makes way for cautious correction, and rightly so. However, the global economy is cyclic and this correction will soon be replaced with new (and hopefully slow but sustainable) growth which may come from existing as well as entirely different markets, demanding new skills and products.

My guess is that the general community is becoming a lot more aware of their environment and of the options for managing its waste. After all, it’s the only habitat we have to live in and share and we must look after it. Last month I was invited to participate as a panellist in a discussion on recycling at the 2012 Australasian Waste & Recycling Expo Seminar Series. Not only did I get to share my technical knowledge and applications experience, but I got to air some general opinions. This was a chance for shire and municipal council CEO’s to debate the management, merits and opportunities for recycling waste with industry experts and authorities. It became obvious very quickly that debate was not forthcoming and what ensued was a consensus of opinion that more had to be done and that councils could provide the will and means but lacked direction and impetus.
Look at us n ow!
It was a disappointment to the delegates and the organisers that those who have the capacity to provide the necessary direction and impetus, the federal and state governments through legislation and funding and the EPA who could temper the argument, chose either not to attend or were not requested. And so we left the seminar wondering. This is not to say that we should give in, but to keep lobbying for more waste accountability and a corresponding improvement in our habitat. After all, other countries are getting on with it and direction always comes from om the top. Germany is the global leader in waste management and resource recovery. It’s endemic emic in their national 4 – a federal directive. culture and is a federal directive. Brazil has legislated to close landfills by 2014 As a leading nation, we should as well. We have the technology to do it.
