T

recognize the unique ability of Oriental Rugs to alter the character of a room. To add warmth and personality to a somewhat sterile, nondescript area. As well as serving as the focal point in even the smartest room. But how do you determine what is right for your room? Does your living room call for a geometric pattern like a tribal Kazak or a more curvilinear style like a Persian Tabriz? Would you be better served by the subtler hues of a French Abusson in your living room or an intricately detailed Persian Silk? A sense of practicality is required, too. Is the rug intended to withstand the constant coming and going of your family in a heavily trafficked area such as den or entry foyer... or is it merely to be showcased in a formal dining room? Good questions all, and the designers at Azhar’s are trained to help you find the right answers. I helps if you can provide us with the dimensions of a room and perhaps even fabric samples of existing furniture and draperies. Better yet, bring us a photo of the area for which the rug is intended. We’ll work closely with you to select just the right pattern and color combination.

he growing enthusiasm for tribal rugs is not difficult to comprehend. They are full of life, vibrantly colored and rich in imagination. The inventive geometric designs are part of a weaving tradition that dates back two thousand years to the nomadic tribes and villages of Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan and other areas further north and east in Central Asia. Tribal rugs have a special character and personality, for they were created not to sell but to use on one’s own home. And it is this “hominess” and this homespun flavor that makes them so easy to live with in the modern home. Indeed, they are an absolute delight anywhere -bedroom or family room, foyer or dining room. They simply glow with beauty and charm. Of course, with the growing appreciation of these delightful rugs, prices have escalated considerably. Fortunately, we acquired much of our collection early on, before the prices began to soar, so we are able to pass on exceptional savings to our customers. The vast appeal of tribal rugs is eloquently summed up by the eminent naturalist, Sir David Attenborough, who spent much time with tribal weavers while making a film about them and their art: “Today, the straightforward yet subtle creations of the tribal weavers have come to be appreciated more and more. The complexity of their meanings, the nuances of their history and traditions, and all the insights of connoisseurship, certainly enhance their fascination. But their abiding appeal rests surely on those qualities which were so treasured by their anonymous creators-a pride in craftsmanship, a joy in pattern and invention, and an unquenchable delight in color.”

amed for the gorge at the entrance to the legendary Khyber Pass, this collection is exclusive to Azhar’s. It derives its name from an area largely settled by Turkoman tribes from Afghanistan. These rugs are often distinguished by their exquisite use of 100% vegetable dyes, a long-forgotten art now enjoying a renaissance in that part of the world. The wool comes from Himalayan sheep and is handspun and hand-knotted with great care and marvelous craftsmanship. The influence of Persian, Turkoman and Afghan cultures results in rugs of great complexity and superb coloration.

lassical replicas of the Golden Age of Indian carpets, these rugs have their origin in the area around Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. The great emperors who built the Taj also established a highly distinctive carpet style that made use of the motifs and decorative art found in the palaces and monuments of the period. With great success, Azhar has turned to descendants of these superb crafts people to replicate these elegant carpets, many of which are today found in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The replicas have found their way into many of the world’s most discriminating homes.

otable for their simplicity and spontaneity, Gabehs are created for everyday use, both on the floors of tents and to mark special occasions. Made of a thick, lustrous wool of the highest quality, their designs are always fresh and alive, their colors aglow with vivid natural vegetable dyes. Among the rugs most prized in this tradition are those of the Qashqa’i and Lor tribes. We always find it remarkable that people who live under such harsh circumstances can create such fine, colorful and cheerful works of art. These rugs are truly to be treasured, and are indeed by many connoisseurs and collectors.

o many designers today are inspired by an art form that originated in the tiny villages of the Caucasus. These rugs, the Soumaks, exclusive to Azhar’s, are among the grandest and most distinguished of all eastern flatweaves. Soumaks are characterized by brilliant natural colors and bold motifs, one of which is a highly stylized dragon. Equally stylized floral and geometric motifs, along with rich coloration, blend beautifully with modern or antique furniture and add an exceptional dimension of beauty, magnificence, and luxury to any home.

Soumak from Azhar’s Exclusive Soumak Collection dominates a stunning dining room.

“When Art touches a soul, Mankind is lifted up and trasfigured. Art can pass through all minds. It can travel through all hearts and touch all our joys and sorrows.” James Allen

Turkoman-Bokhara Collection

urkoman is a broad term that collectively refers to a variety of Turkic-speaking, nomadic people both in Turkey and in neighboring countries. Among the Turkoman tribes best known for the artistry of their weaving are the Salor, Tekke, Saryk, Yomud, Ersari, Chodor and Arabatchi. Rugs are a necessity of nomadic life, and are often among the most treasured possession. They represent a major part of every young women’s dowry as well, so are crafted with great love and care. White is the color for weddings, and is often seen intermingled with red or reddish brown to suggest fecundity in marriage. Turkoman design contains many surprises, such as two-headed animals, “S” borders and a variety of charming folk patterns.

Turkish tribe in the southwestern Caucasus, the Kazaks are famed for the beauty of their rugs, due in large part to the richness of the colors produced by their pure natural dyes. But it is their extraordinary designs that put their handiwork at the pinnacle of Caucasian weaving. Animal, cross and star medallions are often featured in their work, and borders exemplify the free experimentation with geometric forms that characterizes the best of Kazak art.

Folk Art Kilims Collection

ilims at their best are not only extremely decorative, they serve a highly utilitarian purpose. Here are some excellent examples of this twofold function. Inspired by the natural colors of the landscape and rugged terrain, the patterns of these kilims tend to be simple and bold, the fabrics, tough and hard-wearing. Among the best known are those of Balouch, Turkoman, Maimana and Qashqai. Many tend to be generous in size, often twelve or fourteen feet long, so they are ideal for large, heavily trafficked areas.

T

he little French town of Aubusson gave birth to one of the world’s most loved carpets, the richly romantic and surpassingly elegant rugs of the same name. These rugs originated in the 18th century when luxury knew no bounds and France was the principal inspiration for artists and craftsmen of all kinds. In the mid1700’s, the Kings of France set their artisans to work to create an art form that would complement the fine furnishings and paintings of the era. With their floral imagery, decorative borders and soft colorations. Aubussons not only proved to be the ideal designs for the time, they have achieved a timelessness that has made them a favorite in homes everywhere some 250 years later. Azhar’s collection of fine Aubusson weave carpets are exact re-creations of the carpets for the court of Louis XIV.

ot all oriental rugs have pile. In fact, the flatweaves have grown enormously in popularity in recent years. The dhurries of India, with their nubby texture and often fascinating designs, are particularly good examples of flatweaves. Utilizing centuries old tapestry techniques, these rugs are made with meticulous care and precise execution and are astonishing bargains considering the amount of work each entails. Another reason for the popularity of these rugs is that they work so well everywhere, either as a focal point of a room or in a supporting role. Wool Dhurry achieving a mood of relaxing comfort
