Course Number: PLAT-SUMMER-20-80 Course Name: Photography and Fieldtrips for the Middle School Art CurriculumCREDIT ONLY PARTICIPANTS PROVIDE RESDates: Aug 1, 2019 8 30 AM, Aug 2, 2019 8 30 AM Instructor: KAREN SILVERMAN Location: WEST MIDDLE Description: The purpose of this course is to take advantage of summer which provides the extended time necessary for middle school art teachers to meet and accomplish specific new in depth learning that cannot be accomplished during our one two hour PLC meeting a month. Middle school art teachers need to share best practices and explore photography strategies for immediate use with our students and visit several fieldtrip learning opportunities. In order to connect with Parkway's mission, art teachers will learn new skills in photography to help our students perform at higher levels. With two full days of professional development right before the school year begins, we can dedicate more time to discuss in depth our best practices for carrying out photography lessons, exploring a variety of resources such as Pixlr and photoshop to determine which programs work most appropriately for each of the three grade levels. This course will provide time for art teachers to learn new techniques, programs and ways to assess learning. Teachers will learn best practices of teaching through modeling and then comparing/contrasting a variety of instructional and assessment practices. Since we just finished our first year with the new middle school art curriculum as semester classes for 6th and 8th grades, we need the opportunity to discuss how we will address the photography unit in the new semester curriculum. Also, the full days provided in this course will allow us to explore the Third Degree Glass Factory, Art Glass Array and Laumeier Sculpture Park. These locations give students the opportunity to learn first-hand how artists use media outside the classroom to express themselves while simultaneously incorporating the basic Elements and Principles of Art. During this course art teachers will learn how to use higher level thinking and art vocabulary in fieldtrip learning opportunities for students. Art teachers can then use fieldtrips to reinforce art history, and new units for our newer semester classes. It is vital for us to compare and contrast art vocabulary used in our classrooms, such as photography terminology, so that our students will best retain information learned. In order for middle school art students to continue being capable, curious and confident learners, teachers need to learn best practices for providing best art education opportunities, which includes photography and art fieldtrips. Course Number: PLAT-SUMMER-20-93 Course Name: WE GOT THIS-CREDIT ONLY PARTICIPANTS PROVIDE RESOURCES Dates: Jun 3, 2019 N/A Instructor: BETH EDELMANN Location: Online Description: In We Got This Cornelius Minor describes how he realized that listening to children is one of the most powerful things a teacher can do. By listening carefully, Cornelius discovered something that kids find themselves having to communicate far too often. That “my lessons were not, at all, linked to that student’s reality.” While challenging the teacher as hero trope, We Got This shows how authentically listening to kids is the closest thing to a superpower that we have. What we hear can spark action that allows us to make powerful moves toward equity by broadening access to learning for all children. A lone teacher can’t eliminate inequity, but Cornelius demonstrates that a lone teacher can confront the scholastic manifestations of racism, sexism, ableism and classism by showing: exactly how he plans and revises lessons to ensure access and equity ways to look anew at explicit and tacit rules that consistently affect groups of students unequally suggestions for leaning into classroom community when it feels like the kids are against you ideas for using universal design that make curriculum relevant and accessible advocacy strategies for making classroom and school-wide changes that expand access to opportunity to your students “We cannot guarantee outcomes, but we can guarantee access” Cornelius writes. “We can ensure that everyone gets a shot. In this book we get to do that. Together. Consider this book a manual for how to begin that brilliantly messy work. We got this.” In this online book study, we will dive into the work Cornelius teaches and work together to develop a plan on how to best implement his strategies in our classrooms.
