District Cohorts

Cohorts We are pleased to offer four district cohorts for the 18-19 year. Cohort applications are now open and will close on May 15, 2018, 11:59 pm.

Cohorts are a professional development structure designed to improve student learning by strengthening professional practice. It is a process that promotes and sustains teacher leaders by developing expertise through job-embedded professional development within the classroom setting. A cohort is a place where talented teachers collaborate with other educators, while deepening their knowledge of a topic to help students succeed. Best cohort practices dictate that all educators involved in cohorts develop a personalized leadership plan for their ongoing learning in the building and/or district including a timeline of completed work. This high impact, high effort process leads to systemic change and supports our goal of transfer.

In Parkway, a key element of our Mission is to ensure that our students are demonstrating care for themselves and others. We understand that the capacity to learn is not fixed; ability and understanding can always improve. With a student body population as diverse as those of our schools, students have the fortunate opportunity to learn from others who are different from themselves. Parkway defines success based on this very principle. We strive to empower our students to seeks to understand the views, values and cultures of others. This may be achieved by fostering a strong sense of personal, social and civic responsibility. One way that we have been putting these ideas into practice at West High, is by starting a chapter of a national lunch club called, We Dine Together. This student-led, staff-supported club has a simple mission- to change the culture of our school. In We Dine Together, students work to actively unite & empower individuals to create inclusive environments through the belief that long-lasting relationships are not built in isolation and the tools they need to inspire one another to reach out beyond their immediate friend groups and invite students who may be new to the school or have no one to sit with at lunch to join them for food and conversation. After leading this effort for the past year, alongside my amazing student club president, we are starting to see some incredible leaders emerge. I have learned a lot and am more and more energized by this club and by Be Strong. We Dine Together is a model of social activism which can be adapted to suit the needs of every school and age level in the district. I would love to share my learning and tools with other staff members who might be interested in heading a chapter of We Dine Together at their respective schools. This is important work we are doing at this critical moment in time.

In We Dine Together, students work to actively unite & empower individuals to create inclusive environments through the belief that long-lasting relationships are built over the table. With the support of the global anti-bullying campaign, Be Strong, we have teamed up to educate and empower students on the dangers of social isolation and the tools they need to inspire one another to reach out beyond their immediate friend groups and invite students who may be new to the school or have no one to sit with at lunch to join them for food and conversation.
