Welcome Letter Hello ColleaguesParkway has a long tradition of offering a robust catalog of learning opportunities through the year. These OPTIONAL courses are offered by educators, coordinators and principals to continue the professional learning of educators in Parkway. 3 in 3 ● Educators are required to earn three credits every three years. This is known as “​3 in 3​.” These courses are offered as a possible way to meet the 3 in 3 requirement. ○ For details on 3 in 3, please see the 3 in 3 Explained on pg 4. ● As you make choices for your development, consider if you want to take the course for credit toward your 3 in 3 ○ Some courses are only offered only for credit, and some are offered for either pay or credit. ○ Educators in the first three years in Parkway participate in New Educator Induction to earn their first “3 in 3”. These educators may teach or take additional courses for stipend but are not required to do so. ● Administrators may offer or take professional learning courses but are not required to do so. PLEASE NOTE: Every course proposal is reviewed by multiple PLAT members and courses offered were prioritized using the follow criteria: ● high scores by PLAT professional learning scoring guide ● balance of levels ● variety of topics ● district initiatives ● level of need as assessed by PD survey The courses that qualified will be offered for pay and credit, the remaining courses will be offered for credit only. The courses offered for credit only will state OFFERED FOR CREDIT ONLY in the title.

3 in 3 Explained Board Policy GCIA.G All full time certified educators are required to earn three in-service credits every three years (3 in 3) to keep from being held on step or going backward on the salary schedule. Three credits in three years may be earned with graduate credit, salary credit, district in-service credit, building in- service credit, foreign or domestic travel, or individual research as approved by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Accountability (see definitions below). In-service credit is not granted when the activity occurs during working hours, pays the teacher to attend, the teacher receives a yearly stipend for his/her participation, or when the district pays registration fees or other costs of attending the activity. (Exception – Collaborative Team Leader Development) Professional learning which is acceptable for earning credit is learning that enables educators to develop the knowledge, skills, practices, and dispositions they need to help students perform at higher academic levels. Professional Development you DESIGN, based on LEARNING you need, so you can meet the NEEDS of your students. How does it work? Tier 1: Evidence of LEARNING Earn .25 credit or $75 for summarizing your new learning. Tier 2: Evidence of IMPLEMENTATION Earn .5 credit or $150 for snapping a pic showing what you tried. Tier 3: Evidence of IMPACT (measurement) .75 credit or $225 for checking for impact. The step-by-step process within the book, Learning to Choose, Choosing to Learn by Mike Anderson, will give teachers many ideas and examples of evidence based strategies that work for all students to prepare them for an ever changing world. By allowing choice to come alive in your classroom, students will be able to test their own ideas, take intellectual risks that they're interested in, and learn from their mistakes along the way, all in pursuit of understanding the concepts in your curriculum. Course Number: PLAT-FALL-20-29 Course Name: Math Games Worth Teaching K-5-CREDIT or STIPEND Dates: Nov 12, 2019 4 30 PM, Nov 19, 2019 4 30 PM, Oct 26, 2019 4 30 PM Instructor: AMY FITTER Location: HANNA WOODS ELEMENTARY Description:Students love math games and puzzles, but how much are they really learning from the experience? Too often, math games are thought of as just a fun activity or enrichment opportunity. This course will show teachers how to make games and puzzles an integral learning component that provides them with unique access to student thinking. They can be used as formative assessments as an alternative to traditional assessments. Good math games allow students an opportunity to transfer their prior learning to new demands. They allow students to become thoughtful and effective problem solvers and increasingly self-directed, skilled and persistent as learners. Good games allow students to work skillfully with others to achieve common goals. This course is designed to help teachers determine the difference between good math games that encourage these ideas and busy-work games that do not. It will provide teachers with a rich resource to meet these goals.
