Autodidacte, j’explore, depuis près de trois ans, la photographie comme une simple chambre d’expression, et non plus comme un moyen d’enregistrement. Dans mes travaux, l’importance c’est avant tout de formuler, par la photographie, un dialogue multilinguistique entre l’homme et ses émotions.

Self-taught, I've been exploring photography for the past three years as a simple mode of expression, rather than as a way to record the past. In my work, I mainly wish to create a dialogue between people and their emotions.

INTERVIEW TON UNIVERS...
Mon univers se partage entre mon atelier-galerie, situé au sous-sol de ma maison, et mon vaste terrain où je côtoie la Nature. Elle est, pour moi, source d'équilibre, d'inspiration, de beauté et de liberté. Bien que je sois assez solitaire, j'apprécie aussi les grandes villes, comme Montréal, ou New-York. Déambuler sur les trottoirs, parmi la multiethnicité du monde, entendre les gens discuter entre eux d'une musique qui m'est inconnue, sentir les odeurs… Ce périple éveille tous mes sens et me procure un certain déséquilibre enivrant.

TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ? Mes thèmes de prédilection sont l'art primitif, la multiethnicité, les masques et le bestiaire. Ce dernier est devenu, au fil des ans, un sujet récurrent dans mes créations. Avec le projet "Animal Nation", je questionne les notions d'espace, de territoire et de frontière, considérant que sous l'impact envahissant de l'urbanisation, de l'industrialisation et de la commercialisation, les vies animale et végétale, nécessaires à l'équilibre de la Nature, sont sans cesse repoussées, diminuées et limitées.
TES PROJETS ? Faire voyager ce projet au-delà de mon territoire habituel, laisser des traces…
YOUR UNIVERSE... My universe is split between my workshop/gallery in the basement of my house; and my vast garden where I like to spend time with the nature. It gives me balance, inspiration, beauty and freedom. Even though I like to spend time on my own, I also really enjoy big cities such as Montreal or New York. Walking in the streets among people of different origins, listening to people talk about music I don't know, smelling things... This journey awakens my senses and unbalances me in a good way.
YOUR INSPIRATION SOURCES? The main themes in my work are primitive arts, multiethnicity, masks and the bestiary. The latter became recurrent in my creations. In the "Animal Nation" project, I question the notion of space, territory, border as the animal and vegetal territories are constantly reduced by urbanization and industrialization, even though they are necessary for the nature's balance.
YOUR PROJECTS? Try and make this project travel further than my usual territory, leave marks...

INTERVIEW TON UNIVERS...
J'entretiens un rapport intime avec la photographie depuis tout gamin, fin des années 70. À cette période, j'étais littéralement subjugué par des dizaines de photos de famille en noir et blanc que mes grands-parents gardaient précieusement au fond d'un tiroir. En grandissant, je me suis vite retrouvé avec un Kodak Instamatic dans les mains et un peu plus tard avec un Polaroid mais ce n'est pas vraiment allé plus loin qu'une poignée de photos sans intérêt. C'est lors de mon premier job comme disquaire indépendant qu'est apparu chez moi un besoin d'expression tant photographique que musicale. Ainsi, à la fin des années 90, j'ai simultanément commencé à créer de nombreuses vraies-fausses pochettes de disques et à composer quelques pièces sonores. Aujourd'hui, ma démarche photographique est d'essayer d'amener le public à inventer sa propre histoire autour de chacune de mes images. Je ne suis satisfait d'une photo que lorsqu'elle passe outre le simple fait de relater un moment ou un fait. Le plus souvent, je travaille en numérique. Pour la photo couleur, au moment du traitement sur écran, je désature les images et accentue le contraste. Dans mes noir et blanc, le contraste est même une véritable obsession.

TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ? J'ai autant d'appétit pour le travail de dizaines de photographes émergents qui postent leurs photos sur le web que pour les grands noms reconnus. Ce sont eux tous réunis qui m'influencent plus que probablement, au même titre d'ailleurs que certains réalisateurs de films et compositeurs de musique. Quoiqu'il en soit, au final, deux choses vont me motiver à marquer un arrêt devant un simple container maritime, un graffiti, un détail architectural ou une personne qui passe dans la rue : mon état émotionnel à l'instant T et, de manière plus pragmatique, le type de boîtier embarqué dans mon sac.
TES PROJETS ?
Au moment d'écrire ces lignes, je termine une pochette du premier disque autoproduit par le belge Stigman (indie / lo-fi). Ensuite, très centré sur ma ville, je suis partie prenante dans un projet collectif de collage urbain et dans un autre de cartographie sonore. Et puis, au sein du collectif «Phase B» dont je fais partie, nous nous lançons sans cesse de nouveaux défis comme autant de prétextes au partage d'expérience entre nous. Enfin, je ressens un besoin de plus en plus grand de capturer des images en mode frontal avec les gens, cela se traduira donc par plus de scènes réfléchies et de portraits dans un futur proche.
YOUR UNIVERSE...
I've had an intimate relationship with photography since I was a kid in the late 70s. At the time I was literally captivated by dozens of black-and-white photos that my grandparents carefully kept in a drawer. When I grew up I ended up with a Kodak Instamatic then later a Polaroid but it didn't go further than a handful of pointless pictures. During my first job as an independent record dealer I felt the need to express myself both in photography and music. So at the very end of the 90s I started to create mock discs covers and to create some audio pieces.
YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION?
I have as much appetite for the work of the dozens of up-and-coming photographs who publish their pictures on the internet as for well known big names. All of them are inspiring, probably more so than some film directors and composers. Anyway at the end of the day two things will motivate me to stop in front of a container, a graffiti, an architectural detail or a passerby: my emotional state at this very time and, in a more pragmatic way, the type of camera I have in my bag.
YOUR PROJECTS?
My artistic reasoning is to try and bring the audience to invent their own stories around each of my pictures. I am truly satisfied by a picture only when it goes beyond stating a moment or a fact.
As I'm writing these words I'm finishing up the cover of Stigman's first independent album (indie/ lo-fi). I am also involved in a collective project of urban collage and in another one of sound mapping.
I work with digital most of the time. For color photographs I desaturate the pictures and accentuate the contrast during on-screen processing. In black-and-white pictures the contrast is even an obsession for me.
Within « Phase B » collective which I am a member of, we constantly challenge each other as a pretext to share experiences among ourselves. Finally I feel a pressing need to capture pictures in head-on mode with people which will lead to more thoughtful pictures and portraits in the immediate future.

ANTOINE JOSSE PRESENTATION
Les valises d’Antoine Josse sont pleines d’images et de bruits, d’envies de voler, de décrocher la lune, d’être trapéziste, homme-canon... Dans ses sculptures, comme dans ses peintures, tout semble aérien : le matériau est léger, la poésie et l’envie d’envol sont à chaque coin de tableau, d’objet. Depuis presque 20 ans, Antoine Josse expose aux quatre coins du monde, de sa Bretagne natale à sa Normandie d’adoption en passant par Paris, la Suisse, le Chili, le Luxembourg ou encore les Etats-Unis…

Antoine Josse's luggage is full of pictures, noises, desire to fly, to move heaven and earth, to be a trapeze artist or a cannon man... Everything seems ethereal in his sculptures as well as in his paintings: material is light, the poetry and the desire to fly are visible in each and every painting or creation. Antoine Josse has been exhibiting his work for almost 20 years, from his native Britanny to his Normandy of adoption, through Paris, Switzerland, Chili, Luxemburg or the U.S....

TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ? Je m'inspire des émotions humaines. De la beauté au milieu du chaos grandissant de cette planète. Mais aussi de l'art, des souvenirs.

TES PROJETS ? En ce moment je travaille sur différentes séries de photographies plus orientées vers le documentaire. Le nom du projet est « Sourires de crise » et sera cette fois bien ancré dans le réel. Je prépare aussi deux expositions pour cet automne à Paris.

YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? I'm inspired my human emotions. From the beauty in the middle of the chaos growing on this planet. But also from art, from memories.
YOUR PROJECTS? At the moment, I am working on different series of photographs more oriented towards the documentary. The name of the project is “Smiles and Crisis” and it will be well inked in reality. I am also preparing two exhibitions for this autumn in Paris.

TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ? Je regarde, j'observe les gens. Je mémorise leurs attitudes, leurs regards, leurs mouvements et tout resurgit de façon impromptue dans mes dessins.

TES PROJETS ? Je ne suis jamais entièrement satisfait de mes œuvres et cela me pousse à aller de l'avant et à créer sans cesse. La réalisation d'expositions me permet d'avoir un nouveau regard sur mon travail.
YOUR UNIVERSE... I see the world without limits and without borders, in constant mutation. I express this vision in the series “Planets”.
YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? I watch, I observe people. I memorize their attitudes, their looks, their movements, and it all resurfaces in an impromptu fashion in my drawings.
YOUR PROJECTS? I am never entirely satisfied with my work, and that pushes me to go further and create without stopping. The organization of exhibitions permits me to have a new view of my works.

l’enthousiasme d’un enfant ; je commence à parler de mes projets, des choses ou des gens que j’aime et mes yeux s’illuminent. Je suis sans cesse en train de chercher, de lire, de regarder des centaines de photos chaque jour, en me demandant comment assembler tout ça de manière cohérente.
TES PROJETS ? Jusqu’à présent mes projets représentent d’une certaine façon mon univers. Jusque-là, la plupart de mes projets venaient ou concernaient la Roumanie. Ils sont très personnels, impliquent les personnes autour de moi et émergent de mes peurs ou de mes centres d’intérêts profonds.
YOUR UNIVERSE... In my universe are: photography and people I love.
YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? Every person, who is or comes in my life, leaves a trace, and thus also influences my photography. I find inspiration looking at people around me, at paintings, contemporary artworks. I am a very enthusiastic person, I have the enthusiasm of a child; I start to speak about my projects, about things or people I love and my eyes light up. I am always researching, reading, looking over hundreds of photos every day, struggling with my ideas to find a manner to put them out there in a coherent way.
YOUR PROJECTS? All my projects so far represent my universe in a way. Up to now, mostly all my projects were from or about Romania. They are very personal, with the people around me and started from my fears or my deep curiosities.

VOS PROJETS ? Je travaille à un ouvrage mêlant écriture et dessins, j’aimerais qu’il soit imprimé, qu’il existe physiquement.
YOUR UNIVERSE... I like what's uncluttered, simple lines, what is revealed from a pose or a gesture. It probably comes from the fact that I trained as a ballet dancer. I try to create characters that give an impression of weird introspection.
YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? I really like the Japanese culture, it was a real epiphany when I discovered the band KaiKai Kiki. I travel a lot, read classics. German literature, especially Herman Hesse and Thomas Mann, the way they create characters that are both in and out of this world.
I also really like the preciosity and the complexity of Geoge Barbier, Aubrey Beardsley and Vania Zouravliov.
YOUR PROJECTS? I'm currently working on a book mixing writing and drawings, I would like it to be printed out, to physically exist.

GODS & BEASTS TON UNIVERS... Ancien ingénieur en bio-informatique, j'ai décidé un jour de tout plaquer pour partir à la rencontre de la photographie, et des autres. Je ne photographie quasi-exclusivement que des gens, ou presque. Mon univers, aussi épuré soit-il, se veut très humain, rugueux et plein de rencontres. Si je suis allé jusqu'en Mongolie en moto, c'était bien pour provoquer ces rencontres, et me laisser ainsi surprendre par la découverte d'un rapport homme/animal équivoque.
TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ? C'est surtout pendant mes voyages (ou sous ma douche) que les interrogations arrivent. Je ne cherche à apporter ni réponses ni jugements, seulement des questions. Cela vient surement de ce que je j'ai res-

TES PROJETS ? Voyager, découvrir, rencontrer, encore, toujours. Après le Népal ce fut la Mongolie, à pied et en moto, pour provoquer toujours plus de rencontres. YOUR UNIVERSE... I am a former bio-computing engineer and I’ve decided one day to give up everything for photography and meeting people. I almost only photography people. My universe is very uncluttered but still very human, rough and full of interaction. As a proof my road trip to Mongolia in motorbike, where the aim was to provoke those encounters and therefore to be surprised by the equivoque relation between man and animal.
YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? Questions generally pop out during my trips (or under my shower). I’m not searching for answers or judgments, only questions. It probably comes from what I felt the first time while discovering Richard Avedon’s
artwork: faces full of questions without answers. Those portraits on a white background never leave me.
YOUR PROJECTS? Travelling, discovering, meeting people over and over. I first went to Nepal, then to Mongolia, travelling by foot or motorbike, to provoke more and more encounters. After the photo series, I started to work on a documentary (still in process) to look deeper into those encounters.

INTERVIEW TON UNIVERS... La matière utilisée est une pâte de papier que je modèle sur une structure de métal ou de polystyrène. Après séchage des sculptures, certaines parties sont peintes, d'autres sont recouvertes de papier glacé récupéré dans les magazines.
TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ? Les femmes, non, les filles, celles de tous les jours, ni heureuses ni malheureuses. J'essaie de capter l'expression d'un regard, la fragilité d'une attitude.

La féminité dans ce moment charnière entre adolescence et âge adulte, les filles qui ont tant d'interrogation dans le regard, celles qui m'interpellent dans la rue, dans les magazines, sur le net.

YOUR UNIVERSE... The material used is a pulp that I model on a structure of metal or polystyrene. After the sculptures have dried, some parts are painted, some are recovered with glossy paper found in magazines.
YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? Women, no, girls, those from the everyday who are neither happy, nor unhappy. I try to capture the expression of a look, the fragility of an attitude. The femininity at the moment, hinged between adolescence and adulthood, the girls who have so many
questions in their regard, those who challenge me in the street, in stores, on the net.
YOUR PROJECTS? To continue my series of paper women. My sculptures are visible at the workshop-gallery that I share with the painter Manuel Martinez in Carla Bayle (Ariège).
