I WANT TO LISTEN TO YOUR HEARTBEAT I have a little task for those of you Who are lucky enough to have A spouse, partner, significant other. I want you to hold your significant other, Look into their eyes and say I want to listen to your heartbeat. Cuddle into them with your Head on their chest and listen, Then let them do it to you. It must be a great thing to have someone Who loves and cares for you. Some take it for granted and don’t express this warmth And intimacy with each other, either out of naivety or just plain fear. I don’t fear intimacy and I certainly don’t lack ability. If someone runs out of something e.g. water, They realize what they had, and I feel that it’s similar with a spouse or significant other. So all I am saying is cherish the opportunity, And make the most of your partner. Take every opportunity to be tender and loving, Sitting by a nice fire, I know not everyone has a fire, But on the sofa with the lights down low, and Cuddle up to each other. Talk about what you like about each other. The little habits, the mannerisms and the quirky thing if any. You wouldn’t regret it and as for all who read this, They won’t regret it and hope you don’t take it wrong. I’m not out to patronize, A Cat or Dog indeed, may be alright but I know I deserve more than that. Susan Milligan

SIR KENNY DALGLISH MBE: GROWING UP IN MILTON Case study prepared by Valeri Vasilev Dalglish, the son of an engineer, was born in Dalmarnock and brought up in Milton. He moved to the docklands of Govan, near Ibrox, home of Rangers FC, when he was 15. Dalglish made use of local parks to teach himself a number of sports, ranging from tennis to cricket, in his free time. According to Dalglish “We would try any sport we could afford. It kept us happy and busy”. This was an early indicator of Dalglish’s self-motivation and work-ethic. In football, Kenny started out as a goalkeeper with Miltonbank Primary School later attended High Possil Senior Secondary School where his team won the interschools five-a-side and the inter-year five-a-side competitions. Dalglish also won the Scottish Cup playing for Glasgow Schoolboys. He was then selected for the Scottish school-boys team that went undefeated in a home nations Victory Shield tournament. Although Kenny grew up in a Rangers-supporting family, his formal career in football began when Celtic’s Sean Fallon visited the Dalglish family to discuss Kenny’s options with his father. Kenny was embarrassed when Fallon stumbled upon the Rangers posters in his room. By signing for Celtic, Dalglish displayed his open outlook in the face of Glasgow’s fiercest rivalry. This outlook was further shown by his continued appreciation of good football from both teams, with Dalglish stating, “Although I would go and watch Rangers, it was because I was interested in football”. Dalglish credits his family with instilling in him the discipline and values he has carried throughout his life and career. Though the young Kenny would often find himself uprooted by his family moving from place to place, his parents provided him with the values that he has displayed in his life and career, “My mum and dad brought me up to believe in fundamental principles, like having good manners and knowing right from wrong. I was taught to appreciate other people and what they have done for me. Learning such values gave me a good basis for life”. Dalglish won four Scottish league championships and four Scottish Cups with Celtic. His years at Liverpool were among the club's most successful periods, winning six English league championships, the FA Cup, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, three European Cups and one UEFA Super Cup. Scotland’s most capped player and leading goal scorer (jointly with Denis Law), Dalglish went on to have a successful career in football management too winning three First Division championships, an FA Cup, and four FA Charity Shields with Liverpool before leading Blackburn Rovers out of the Second Division to become Premier League champions. Excerpt from Local Heroes a project led by Professor John McKendrick of the Scottish Poverty and Inequality Research Unit at Glasgow Caledonian University. The collection is edited by John H. McKendrick and Stephen Campbell. For more information on the Local Heroes series contact John at j.mckendrick@gcal.ac.uk / 0141 331 8221

On the first day of snow here - in Glasgow - I got a text from a friend who now lives in Berlin, he told me that it was snowing for him too - and that his flatmate, who'd just moved from Brazil to Germany, cried when she awoke because she had never seen snow before - and me, walking the streets where I grew up, somehow connected to him, and her, and you. At least when it snows. Eoin

I had a job as a history teacher. Then 10 months into the job, I had to quit for medical reasons as I had problems with my eyes.
