ISSUE 8 ISSUE 8 ST FRIDAY 21ST AUGUST FRIDAY 21 AUGUST 20202020
I am well, have been out for coffee and eating, making the most of it as a lot of places are going into local lockdowns because of spikes in the virus. I checked the cinema and apparently, they are opening at the end of this month - looking forward to it! I dreaded going back to school. We got about eight weeks off in our day and we didn’t get the October fortnight. We had great summers and I actually think we got better weather. We have been getting bad weather lately. I agree with Gillian, there are great women guitarists. I love Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, Carol Kaye, Joan Jett, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Armatrading, Suzi Quatro and many, many more. I also like BB King, Acker Bilk, Lou Armstrong, Louie Prima and the Motown Philadelphia sound. And Simmi Saini – what a lovely piece of art – looking forward to seeing more! DAD’S LOST KEYS You couldn’t find your keys? Oh, by jeez! You’re like a wee squirrel hiding things, Well I guess that’s what dementia brings. You were so upset But don’t fret Because we will all help Well that’s what I would yelp To everyone in the room We will find them soon. We looked in your pockets but only found rusty old nails What have you done with them Dad? You just looked confused and sad, We looked in every room, So much for finding them soon. We ended up sitting down and while looking around, We saw a pair of shoes under the table When my daughter burst out laughing And when she was able She said look – In his shoe was his keys hiding away, Those keys that went astray Were safely tucked away Angela Cunningham

I wish I’d been that much more willing, When I had more tooth there than filling To pass up the gobstoppers In respect to my choppers And to buy something else With my shilling. Oh I wish I’d looked after my teeth.

I am starting to travel around to places like Parkhead Forge, Coatbridge and the city centre. 12 Edward Henry
THE CRANHILL BUDGIE TWINS Never been a person to take re-incarnation too seriously passing it off as a piece of superstitious nonsense. Not anymore. I’m convinced I have the spirit of the Kray brothers living in my house since Christmas disguised as Jack and Victor. The Cranhill Budgie Twins. The resemblance is uncanny. Victor is a sweet gentle creature quite content to swing and chirp away happily on his perch. I’ve recently noticed some alarming changes in his behaviour. Caught him a few times nutting Jack off his perch with a perfect Glasgow Kiss then go back to chirping and swinging away quite happily, with an air of contentment at a job well done, happy that Jack has decided to go for a fly about. Jack on the other hand is a noisy, bullying flight of feathers. I swear his egg must have been cracked well before he hatched. He’s the most clever of the two, the maddest, completely mental bird I’ve had. He puts me in mind of a demented cockatiel. His main interest in life, apart from food and trying to kill Victor, is making sure I understand who rules the roost in this here house… The two of them have started to argy-bargy again, feathers flying. They’re definitely under the influence of some kind of spirit so they’re getting papped into the bedroom ‘till they sober up. Annie Love

A BRIEF ENCOUNTER WITH THE DEAD AT EASTERN NECROPOLIS
By chance I had an inspirational guided walking tour of the Eastern Necropolis. The inscriptions on those elaborate carved grave headstones told a rich tapestry, the life history of people of by-gone days. The huge and intricate carving caught my enquiring mind. The sheer imposing size depicts statements of those with wealth, power and social status. But also honours for valour (A), poetry (B), the bravery of Fire Chiefs (C) whose engines were manually hauled into place by people’s sheer strength and the immortal Celtic Cross (D). The tragic death of the 29 young carpet weaver girls (E) when an ornate wall fell on them during a great storm in 1889. Tucked away in the walled corner of the Jewish Hebrew section (F), a very large seashell was placed at each grave – anyone know the significance of this symbol? It borders the walls of Celtic Park football ground and casts a shadow in conversation with the spirits of those buried in the commonwealth war commission graves. Then (G) is a mini, plain head stone tucked away incognito measuring 1 x 8 with a single bunch of fresh red roses to greet a “hello, nice to meet you.” Kit McKeown
