WHAT’S ON

CELTIC CONNECTIONS AT PLATFORM FIELDS OF GREEN: A SONGWRITER’S CIRCLE FEATURING PERFORMANCES OF NEW SONGS BY RACHEL SERMANNI, LOUIS ABBOT (ADMIRAL FALLOW), RM HUBBERT, THE PICTISH TRAIL AND JO MANGO JAN THU 21 7.30pm

£12/£7.50

In this unique show, a group of Scotland’s finest songwriters – Rachel Sermanni, Louis Abbot (Admiral Fallow), RM Hubbert, The Pictish Trail and Jo Mango – will premiere a series of brand new songs inspired by their travels as musicians. All five musicians have been tracking their movements across the festival season and writing songs that explore their lifestyles ‘on the road’, reflecting on whether they affect, influence, shape or are shaped by discussions around the environment and climate change. As well as performing these songs, they will use a classic songwriter’s circle forum to discuss their songwriting process and share fascinating reflections on their songs (old and new). This one-off evening of music and artist discussion promises to be an enlightening debate as well as a night of beautiful music.

JOZEF VAN WISSEM THIS IS KOLOGO AND LAURA CANNELL POWER! FEATURING JAN FRI 22 7.30pm KING AYISOBA, £12/£7.50 AYUNNE SULE & ZEA Jozef Van Wissem is ‘both an avant-garde composer and a baroque lutenist, and thus no stranger to dichotomy,’ according to the New York Times. He has released over ten albums since the early 2000s on labels like Sacred Bones records, Important Records and his own Incunabulum Imprint. Van Wissem often plays live with Jim Jarmusch, Tilda Swinton and Zola Jesus. He makes music which is hypnotic, in a way that’s just as challenging as more confrontational music. Wire Magazine described one of his albums “as a masterpiece”.

Laura Cannell plays fiddle, overbowed fiddle, double recorders, sometimes percussion and other rarefied wind instruments. Drawing on ancient transcendental and earthly music, her sense of space, dynamics and working with acoustics is highly attuned, often utilising a fragment from a medieval theme to her own end, embracing the apparitional, historical or the otherworldly. She has released five albums to critical acclaim and was described as “A Virtuoso Magpie Musician” by The Times.

For all Celtic Connections gigs at Platform, a bus will leave from Mono, King’s Court at 7pm, £5 return.

JAN SAT 23 7.30pm

£12/£7.50

King Ayisoba is a Ghanaian trailblazer who performs traditional street-folk on the kologo (a rhythmic, melodic, two-stringed lute), fired-up by 21st century influences, and variously sung in Frafra, Twi and English. His rousing, infectious kologo beats have made him a big star in Ghana (and beyond), and the LP Modern Ghanaians was a thrilling testament to his extraordinary charms. Of all the kologo players in Ghana, Ayuune Sule is the one with the most soulful voice; when listening to Ayuune Sule you hear the direct connection with the soul and blues from the other side of the ocean. His kologo playing is very rhythmical and fast, his technique is superior on the kologo as well as on the sinyaka (percussion). Zea is the berserk alter-ego of The Ex vocalist Arnold de Boer. The kamikaze Dutchman’s hi-octane wigouts veer across break-pop, avant-garde, guitar-mangling, rapid-fire electronica and ear-splitting chorales. Zea is a long-term collaborator, champion and friend of King Ayisoba and the live collaborations are something very special.

HOW YOU GONNA LIVE YOUR DASH JAN THU 28 & FRI 29 7pm £8/£4.50/£3.50

Exploring the life-altering decisions we make in order to get the most out of our time on earth: giving up a high-flying career, confronting an addiction, dropping it all and moving to a new continent. Based on real life testimonies and featuring beautiful pyrotechnic effects, this epic performance looks at the moment we choose to begin our own lives, the smoky fall out and how we piece together a new future.  14yrs+

FEB FRI 12 7pm & SAT 13 2pm £8/£4.50/£3.50 “ We used to find things a lot easier… meeting people… I used to go dancing five nights a week…ten to one I got a date on Sunday night…” A celebration of three lives, collectively spanning fifty years with the women of one family. They invite audiences to consider the richness in their own maternal ‘herstory’. When Amy’s grandma turned 30, she had three children and was thankful to finally live in a house with an indoor toilet. When Amy’s mum turned 30, she was an NHS professional, had a mortgage and was pregnant with her first child. Amy just turned 30. She’s single, chancing it, and certain about exactly nothing.  14yrs+

STOWAWAY

FEB FRI 19 7pm & SAT 20 2pm £8/£4.50/£3.50 A Boeing 777 begins its descent towards Heathrow. The wheels unfold out of the belly of the plane. The frozen body of a stowaway is tipped out and cuts through the clear morning sky. In the car park of B&Q, Andy looks up. Something is falling out of the sky. A man crash-lands on the ground in front of him. Stowaway is a story about a man from India who finds himself far from home and adrift from everything he knows. It is the story of an extraordinary journey in search of an impossible future. But what are the rules of telling someone’s story when they come from a world so different from our own? Stowaway is the new show from two-time Fringe First winners and “bright young things of British Theatre” (Observer), Analogue.  14yrs+

By 2016 the richest 1% will own more than the rest of the world put together. In the UK over 30% of MPs attended private school, as did 70% of top judges, 62% of senior army officers and 25% of BBC senior execs – but only 7% of the population went to these schools. Despite being 51% of the global population women hold just 22% of all parliamentary seats. Following in the footsteps of Endurance (Glasgow Commonwealth Games Festival 2014 production) The Women’s Creative Company are coming to together again to present a brand new piece of work examining what privilege and entitlement mean to them. As more people in society buckle under the pressures of inequality this project asks when is enough, enough? Privilege is a creative investigation into power and entitlement – what it means to us personally, how we use it when we have it, and what the human impact is upon those whose lives are affected by it. With the support of Glasgow Life, The Robertson Trust and The Violence Against Women Implementation Group an exhibition created by women’s groups from across Glasgow will be presented alongside this performance.  14yrs+

Platform’s annual celebration of cross art form experimentation and excellence returns. Previous festivals have hosted performances from Alasdair Gray, Vashti Bunyan and Aidan Moffat. The programme this year promises to be as exciting as ever with artists already confirmed to appear including Scottish Album of the Year 2015 award-winner Kathryn Joseph, collaborating with The Twilight Sad’s James Graham, physical theatre ensemble Company of Wolves and visual artist Mandy McIntosh. Matthew Bourne returns after last year’s mesmerising ‘Radioland’ with a new project ‘Moogmemory’ accompanied by video artist Michael England (Elbow, Autechre). Michael will create evocative moving images inspired by Matthew’s solo Moog Memorymoog synthesizer. “ An eclectic set of activities and performances in a family-friendly environment” The Quietus “ It is moments such as this which have marked out Platform as an unusual – but successful – venue for innovative arts programming”, The Scotsman “ A bountiful celebration of contemporary art, the only thing it’s lacking is a headline slot from Kanye West” The Skinny  For All

Tales of a Grandson is one man’s re-telling of Scotland’s history – but this is no straight and dusty history lesson: To tell this epic tale Andy Cannon (previously of Wee Stories) takes us on a time travelling adventure with his grandparents through Scotland’s past to piece together the myriad of Kings, Queens, friends and foes that make up our nation’s story (and unearths just why our mountains are so small on the way!). Accompanying Andy is composer and musician Wendy Weatherby.

Where do you begin to tell the story of Scotland?…with the myths, the legends and the battles? Or perhaps simply with the universal story of boy meets girl?

‘(the audience) had their imagination touched and tickled by the sheer pleasure of hearing a master story-teller in his element .’ The Herald  7yrs+
