A PERFORMANCE DESPERATELY IN NEED OF AN AUDIENCE

Presented by the Arab Puppet Theatre Foundation in partnership with The Arab British Centre ‘A Performance Desperately in Need of an Audience’ is a silent play that bends the rules of puppet theatre. Stage props and settings become puppets, setting the scene of a war-torn shore where attempts at pursuing everyday activities are as dangerous as impossible. The performance follows two characters, who, barely surviving their day to day realities, must decide whether or not to leave behind their home and loved ones in the hope of finding one’s humanity again beyond the seas. Thu 21 Sep, 1.30pm & 7pm 14yrs+ £8.50 / £5 / £4 (Local Links)

And who’s the other guy? The award-winning Birds of Paradise Theatre Company with Tron Theatre brings you a dazzling new production directed and designed by Kenny Miller and featuring original songs and high camp! TABULA RASA

LOVE SONG TO LAVENDER MENACE

James Ley in association with Royal Lyceum Edinburgh It’s 1987 and shop workers Paul and David are getting ready for a celebration of the 5th anniversary of LAVENDER MENACE, Scotland’s foremost lesbian, gay, feminist bookshop. From its humble beginnings in the cloakroom of an Edinburgh nightclub, (that saw a performance from the Village People!), this trailblazing venture has become the beating heart of Edinburgh’s LGBT community. But can it survive in Thatcher’s changing Britain of capitalism and commodification? LOVE SONG TO LAVENDER MENACE is a funny and moving testimony to the love and passion it takes to make something happen and the loss that is felt when you have to let it go. Sun 29 Oct, 2pm 14yrs+ £8.50 / £5 / £4 (Local Links)

Presented by Scottish Ensemble and Vanishing Point Two of Scotland's foremost performing groups — theatre company Vanishing Point and string orchestra Scottish Ensemble — present a co-production that sets Arvo Pärt's spiritual and mesmeric Tabula Rasa in a theatrical context, exploring the recognised role of the piece in the care of patients during their final days. With musicians forming an integral part of the drama, this visionary production explores the documented role of Pärt’s haunting piece, which has come to be known — and used — as a profound and transcendental piece of music. It is a life-affirming exploration of care, humanity, suffering — and the uplifting power, and endless importance, of art. Conceived and directed by Matthew Lenton. Musical direction by Jonathan Morton. Previews: Fri 3 Nov, 7pm + Sat 4 Nov, 2pm £8 / £4.50 / £4 (Local Links)

OUR FATHERS

A Magnetic North and Traverse Theatre Company Co-production Two atheist sons of clergymen are on a quest to find out how we disagree with someone we love. Our Fathers is a new play inspired by Father and Son, Edmund Gosse’s Victorian memoir about growing up in an evangelical Christian family and realising that he couldn’t share his father’s beliefs. When his own clergyman father suggested he should read the book, Nicholas Bone assumed it would reveal something about their own relationship. As he combs the book for clues, Rob Drummond, another son of a clergyman, is also looking for answers to a big question of his own. Wed 15 Nov, 7pm 14yrs+ £8.50 / £5 / £4 (Local Links)

MATTHEW BOURNE

Matthew Bourne makes a welcome return to Platform this September with brand new album Isotach. Following his celebrated moogmemory project, piano is at the heart of this new piece of work and once again, spontaneity is the keyword, catching on tape that pregnant moment when a piece begins to form. Skeletal piano motifs, an aching use of space and sparing cello arrangements are deployed to devastating effect. Fri 8 Sep, doors 7pm All ages £10 / £7.50 (Local Links/conc)

This autumn and winter we celebrate the community we work with here at Platform through two new commissions by Glasgow based artists Colin James Tennant and Helen De Main. Helen has also been developing a new art work over the past year, with regular meetings with our knitting group, a group of woman who have lived in the area for some time. Both Colin and Helen have created exhibitions through different mediums that shine a light on the inspiring stories of the people of Easterhouse.

Helen de Main:

YOU KNOW, THINGS LIKE THAT Presented by Platform

Over the past year Helen has been meeting with a group of local women at Platform. Brenda, Foxy, Isabelle, Jean, Lorna, Mags and Margaret are all members of our knitting group, who meet weekly to work on collective and individual knitting projects. They are also all friends. Inspired by the Consciousness Raising groups that emerged from the Women’s Movement in the 1960s, Helen has instigated a series of open discussions with the group. These have taken various themes as their starting point from which conversations have opened out and expanded. The women have shared thoughts on education and work / housework, as well as reflecting on experiences of being daughters, sisters, wives, mothers and grandmothers. Through looking at these women’s lives, marked by commonalities and difference, remarkable events and mundane ones, the exhibition celebrates the strength, resilience and beauty that exists within everyday experience. Opening Event: Sat 25 Nov, 6pm Exhibition dates: Sun 26 Nov — Sun 11 Feb Free

OUR PEOPLE, OUR COMMUNITY

Made In Easterhouse: Your Centre. Your Vision for the Future. This summer, we worked with our Thriving Places Easterhouse partners to deliver a host of activity in the old Savers Unit at the Shandwick Centre, Easterhouse. We received Scottish Government funding to have a conversation with local residents and people using the Shandwick to get their thoughts on how they’d like to see the centre and surrounding areas improved. Platform and Thriving Places Easterhouse co-ordinated a month long programme with artists Mitch Miller, Organised Noise and Colin James Tennant as well as theatre makers Geraldine Heaney, Pete Lannon and Katie Bartholomew to bring their popup performance piece The Information Booth to the process. The final week of the project cumulated in a series of hands on

workshops with in depth discussions led by our lead consultants erz studio on desired changes for the area’s future which resulted in a series of proposals and plans for progression. Jenny Crowe, Arts Manager at Platform said: “Local residents are the specialists in their area and we were delighted that over 600 people seized the opportunity to talk to the Made In Easterhouse team — the passion and energy from those involved in the conversation was amazing. EASTERHOUSE DIALECTOGRAM

Illustrator Mitch Miller has been working with Platform over the last year to create a series of Dialectograms — a word he has invented to describe large drawings that are dense and complex, graphic artworks which capture people and place. Easterhouse Dialectogram focuses on two locations: The Bridge and The Shandwick Centre. Mitch led on drop in drawing sessions at The Shandwick Centre capturing daily life of regular users and visitors. This work will contribute to the creation of the final Easterhouse Dialectogram. Mitch said: “It was great to be ingrained in the community at The Shandwick Centre, hearing what people had to say and getting a true feel for the space. I used a mix of interviews, photographs, sketches and notes to capture my time there. The Dialectorgram will be a gift to the local community and on display for all to see”.

LOCHEND SURGERY COMMISSION

With Alice Dansey-Wright Platform and Alliance Scotland are working together with artist Alice Dansey-Wright to create new designs to decorate the waiting area of Lochend Surgery, which is part of Easterhouse Community Health Centre and just a short walk from The Bridge. Alice said “A map of the Easterhouse area is already a fixture of the room, which I am using as a starting point to create fresh new designs that communicate practical community and health information as well as making it a brighter and more inviting place to be.” Alice is passionate about the many applications of illustration as both a tool and an art form in itself and uses a variety of techniques including printmaking, painting and creative digital software.
