Arts from the Start Party
Being 9 was OK but being 10 will be…. “better, amazing, awesome, extraordinary, great, spectacular, fantastic because you get double digits and double digits means double presents!”
Deirdre Nelson is currently artist in residence at Platform working with older adults who meet in Barlarnark, Blairtummock, Calvay, Easthall, Lochend, Provanhall, Ruchazie and Wellhouse.
Starcatchers Platform
We are delighted to introduce you to our first ever Class in Residence. Primary 5 pupils from Oakwood Primary School who are turning 10 this year will be our official advisors to help us reach our milestone birthday.
Made in Easterhouse documents everyday making and celebrates people, place and skills, challenging stereotypes of the area. Since the beginning of the year, the project has involved working with groups in preparation for a large tea dance that took place in April. Tablecloths were designed, decorations were handmade as well as a series of knitting bees that took place at Platform to create table decorations. The project will continue over the summer months through to the autumn where Deirdre will continue to work with the groups as well as with people here at Platform. A series of sewing bees will take place to embroider 8 of the designed table cloths, a series of artist led workshops will be delivered, including sewing, knitting, ceramics and screen-printing.
Follow their journey and adventures on the new Platform website!

Join Starcatchers for a fun filled day celebrating Arts from the Start! Starcatchers are also turning 10 and celebrating all things Early Years with a big birthday bash in partnership with Platform. Kicking off with the UK première of Starcatchers’ new show for 6 months to 2 year olds, The Shape of Things, followed by fun family workshops, film première’s, live music from Sprog Rock, party games and of course, cake.
The world all around us is made up of wonderful shapes. But sometimes there are so many shapes that some shapes get lost. This is a story of two shapes, Cubert and Triantán, and the adventures they have finding their way back to each other. Set in a soft and tactile environment Starcatchers and Branar tell this interactive story through puppetry, object, theatre, music and sound. Created by Ailie Cohen & Marc Mac Lochlainn.

As part of our 10 year celebrations Platform is delighted to host this traditional tea dance led by a live band. With dance instructors on hand, tea, cakes, guest vocalists and more than enough quicksteps, foxtrots and waltzes to satisfy first-timers and veterans alike.
There’s a man alone on stage. He’s here to do the performance but he’s a bit stuck. There are also some children on a Scottish island, and some teenagers from Belgium who want to be a part of the show. Will they help the man or do they have their own ideas about what is going to happen?
Our auditorium will be transformed into an amazing ballroom featuring beautiful handmade art works and objects created by local people in collaboration with our artist in residence, Deirdre Nelson.
Created especially for children and adults, this performance celebrates human connections and differences between individual people in diverse locations. Directed and performed by awardwinning artist Greg Sinclair in collaboration with young people from Scotland and Belgium, As The Crow Flies is an exhilarating performance featuring live music, projection, and live-streaming. The performance will also be streamed live online at www.livescoreproject.com

Rules of the Dance Floor is a cross generational interactive performance and audio event that celebrates the stories, histories and communities of Scotland’s dance floors.
Our EPIC Celebration Day features some of the innovative projects that have shaped our first decade. It reflects our aspirations of being recognised as a centre of excellence for public engagement and, aptly, hosts Headspace our annual celebration and contribution to the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival.
Rules of the Dance Floor taps into Scotland’s rich heritage of dancing, whether that be a ceilidh, the tradition of ballroom, community parties, our thirst for clubbing, family events or the makeshift dance floors that appear in folks living rooms and kitchens week in week out.
Confirmed highlights include the première of a specially commissioned film documenting the tenth year in the life of Platform, Malcolm Lindsay performing his lauded When We Grow Younger compositions created with pupils from Sunnyside Primary, songs and sketches from the Platform to Health programme and a unique performance showcasing the discoveries that have been made by our artist in residence, Deirdre Nelson.
Exploring the notions of why do we dance and the events that bring us on to the dance floor. ‘Rules’ uses interviews and workshops with local community groups in and around Platform, to gather audio clips of dance floors anecdotes. Artists Lou Brodie and Philippa Clark head up the workshops and interviews. In collaboration with musician and sound designer Alan Bryden these stories are then structured to form a performance score for the final event.
We also welcome speakers from further afield to share their practice and provide inspiration for our next ten years!

Two friends are going somewhere new, with some things that they know...and some they don’t. Everyone tells them they are big and ready, so why do they sometimes feel so small? Will this new adventure be exciting or scary? Have they packed their bags with all the right things? Can their friends come too? They need help to work it out! Can you come and help them? Show them how to be as brave as a dinosaur or a superhero…just like you! Big is a new theatre clown show for 3-5 year olds all about what it is like to be small in a big world and starting somewhere new. The great news is that James is playing Platform on the 9th of July, the terribly sad news is that this is his farewell Scottish show. James has made the incredibly difficult decision to stop playing live after this tour. He will, however, continue to record music albeit less frequently and not necessarily on 12-string guitar.
On this day 10 years ago, we opened our doors for the first time. Join us for a very special party to celebrate. There will be live bands, DJs, a tenth anniversary parade, pop up performances, comedy and a summer pool party. With workshops throughout the building offering fun activities for all ages and with a roller disco to finish, this is one party not to be missed!

James Blackshaw performs celestial and spirit-lifting guitar-led compositions. Meditative in quality, cinematic in scope, his music spirals gracefully across complex patterns, motifs and harmonics. He made his name as a 12-string acoustic guitarist, and his relationship with the instrument is near perfect.

Based on real testimonies, A Bench on the Road is a rich piece of musical and visual storytelling which explores women’s experience of immigration through the lens of Scottish-Italian immigrants from 18501950. The play tells stories of Scottish and Italian women divided, yet united, battling for identity and belonging.
Following success in Australia and New York, Catherine Wheels re-stage this energetic piece of storytelling for Scottish venues. A passionate one-man show that vividly illustrates the high stakes of classroom power play, Pondlife movingly explores the lasting legacy of childhood friendships. Supported by Creative Scotland.

Spanning a century of unprecedented radical change, the diverse experiences of women from two cultures intertwine. Based on hundreds of interviews collected over thirty years, this play brings to life stories of our mothers, unlocking the past and asking pertinent questions about our future.
Moving school is never easy. When class bully Sharon takes an instant dislike to Martin, it feels like he has an especially tough ride ahead of him. That is until he befriends Simon McGurk and his fortunes seem to change. The fickle world of playground politics soon puts pressure on their friendship, however, and Martin finds himself making a choice that will impact them both for the rest of their school days.

With original songs, hilarious physical comedy and dance, Penguin! Elephant! is a magical new show about celebrating differences for anyone who’s ever waddled like a Penguin or stomped like an Elephant. The show includes a rap about fish fingers, some brilliant physical comedy, some foodbased mess and a magical balloon ride into the winter landscape.
Three years ago Robbie McGuire started becoming invisible. It's not a big problem. It doesn't affect his day to day life. Mrs Gillespie still gives him detention, Sarah Hargreaves still threatens to smash his face in, and Mr Bartnik the shopkeeper still won't let him forget that he owes 10p for a bottle of milk bought over a year ago. But Robbie has started noticing that people bump into him a lot in the street. That nobody ever really looks at him - they always look to the side or a metre behind, as though they're not quite sure exactly where he is. And this morning, the longer he looked in the mirror the less and less he could see of himself. And so begins Robbie's journey on a very weird day.
@platformglasgow →
Penguin is a little bit selfish. Penguin loves fish fingers, but never shares them. Everything is black and white and that’s just the way Penguin likes it. Until one day Elephant turns up. Elephant is big. Elephant is messy. Elephant likes lots of colour everywhere. However will Penguin cope!?

After last year’s brilliantly weird Christmas Carousal we decided to crack open the chestnuts, mulled wine and mince pies with The National Jazz Trio of Scotland who aren’t a trio and they don’t really play jazz. Featuring Bill Wells, Abu Vulliamy, Kate Sugden, Gerard Black and Danielle Price they will be playing their wonderful Christmas album in full. Described by the Quietus “as plain and sharp and elegantly devastating as they might be if Young Marble Giants’ Alison Statton conjured the spirit of Dory Previn”
