CELTIC CONNECTIONS 2018

Platform is proud to host two shows as part of Celtic Connections

ALASDAIR ROBERTS IN COLLABORATION WITH JOASIHNO

Joasihno is a German electronic duo featuring Nico Sierig and Cico Beck, who are often accompanied by a robot orchestra. Alasdair Roberts is an acclaimed Scottish folk musician, renowned songwriter and interpreter of traditional songs. We have invited these seemingly disparate musicians to collaborate and interpret aspects of Scottish and German folk music. What appears at first to be an odd pairing starts to make sense when the audience hears the innovative way that Joasihno create delicate and subtle melody throughout their graceful, mesmerising music — which is then paired with the drama, tragedy of the subject matter and the intuitive masterful beauty of Alasdair’s guitar playing. Both acts will play sets of their own material followed by a collaboration. Presented in partnership with The Goethe Institut.

RICHARD DAWSON

+ support Rising up from the bed of the River Tyne, a voice that crumbles and soars, that is steeped in age-old balladry and finely-chiselled observations of the mundane, Richard Dawson is a skewed troubadour at once charming and abrasive. Shambolically virtuosic guitar playing stumbles from music-hall tune-smithery to spidery swatches of noise-colour, swathed in amp static and teetering on the edge of feedback. Richard’s songs are both chucklesome and tragic, rooted in a febrile imagination that references worlds held dear and worlds unknown. Sun 28 Jan, doors 7pm All ages £12.50 / £7.50 (Local Links/conc)

HEADING TO PLATFORM FROM GLASGOW CITY CENTRE? A bus will leave Mono (12 Kings Court, Glasgow) at 6.30pm and return after both Celtic Connections shows. A return ticket costs £5 and can be purchased in Monorail. Please email info@platform-online. co.uk to reserve a ticket.

HELEN DE MAIN: YOU KNOW, THINGS LIKE THAT

Presented by Platform

A unique exhibition that has been created by Helen following a series of open discussions with Platform’s knitting group. The women from the group shared thoughts on their lives - from work and education to motherhood. Foxy, one of the woman who took part, said a few words on the project: “It’s been great meeting Helen and being part of the group conversations. Despite our different ages and backgrounds, it was apparent that we’ve all faced common issues and that in some respects, not much has really changed for women throughout recent decades. “I also had the opportunity to visit Helen in Glasgow Print Studio and help her to print some of the images. It was amazing to watch the process and see the work come to life... who knew some old childhood photos could be made into something so beautiful.” Free Until Sun 11 Feb

GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL 2018

This April we welcome Glasgow International to Platform. GI 2018 runs from Fri 20 Apr – Mon 7 May across the city.

PERSONAL STRUCTURES

Presented by Jessica Ramm Jessica will create a new art work that is informed by and responds to our setting: our architecture and people. Working closely with Platform, Ramm reflects upon the emotional effects of the spaces we live and work in, presenting performances and sculptures that explore the possibilities of ‘homemade’ architecture as an aesthetic and political statement. The construction processes Ramm uses are influenced by her experience of growing up in an 80s squatting community with a radical DIY ethos. Developed in the run up to the festival through a programme of workshops and events led by Ramm, these structures will present new versions of familiar domestic spaces; restaging an urban environment that resembles Easterhouse. Opening event: Sat 21 April (free) Exhibition: Fri 20 April — Sun 27 May (free)
