SOURAKATA KOITE
Support from Duncan Marquiss + Burd Ellen An offering simply named ‘En Hollande’ seems an unlikely contender for a modern kora classic, but Sourakata Koite’s debut album recorded in an old henhouse in Delft in 1984 is nothing short of that. The kora is a lute popular all over West Africa and has normally 21 strings (Koite’s customised instrument has 22 and he is known to experiment with unusual tunings). It is mostly known as the central instrument of the griots, itinerant singers who are much-respected members of the ancestral cast societies. Born in a Senegalese village close to the Mauritanian border in 1955, Sourakata Koite moved to Paris in the late 1970s. He made a living by entertaining the international and mixed crowds of a new type of fancy African restaurant springing up around the Seine at that time. ‘En Hollande’ is set for reissue by Awesome Tapes From Africa early in 2019. Curious and eclectic in his tastes, Sourakata listens to and plays a wide range of styles – jazz, rock, reggae, funk, blues and classical. Glasgow based Duncan Marquiss regularly plays guitar in The Phantom Band (Chemikal Underground Records) and has recently performed with various other musicians, including Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust and Thor Harris of Swans. Burd Ellen is a new project from Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts, Green Ribbons, Alex Rex) featuring Gayle Brogan (Pefkin, Barrett’s Dottled Beauty) and Lucy Duncan (Luki). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Thu 24 Jan, doors 7pm All ages £12.50/£7.50 (Local Links/conc)

HEN OGLEDD
Support from The Gymnastic Band Founded by Richard Dawson and harpist, Rhodri Davies, with the addition of Dawn Bothwell and Sally Pilkington, Hen Ogledd’s meaning comes from the Welsh name for The Old North. Mogic – released November 2018 – is Hen Ogledd’s third LP and their most surprising and accessible work yet. Each hailing from historically different tribal regions of the Old North, the musicians on Mogic challenge the idea that the ancient world was rife with magic, while the new is infiltrated by cold logic. This dynamic record of eddies and swirls, ravishing melodies, hallucinatory textures and bonkers rhythms is pinned down by some deft performances: Pilkington’s picture-perfect pop and earthy singing, Davies’ blazing harp splutterations and guitar moans, Bothwell’s twisted telephone techno and bamboozling lyric-bombs and Dawson’s utter bass. Support comes from The Gymnastic Band a highly sprung trio in pursuit of rhythmic adventure and pulsating metronomy. After a hiatus of 20 years, in summer 2017, former Ganger bass players Graham Gavin and Stuart Henderson joined forces with drummer David Maxwell (Gift Horse) to form a unique trio displaying an acrobatic penchant for skewed arrangements that will infiltrate listeners’ eardrums and render them senseless with their melodically charged, harmonic baubles of sonic delight! Fri 25 Jan, doors 7pm All ages £15/£7.50 (Local Links/conc) NEED A LIFT TO PLATFORM? A return bus leaves Mono, Glasgow city centre, at 6.30pm on both nights of the Celtic Connection gigs. £5 return – email info@platform-online.co.uk to book your space.

Platform’s visual arts programme includes 18 residencies, commissions and exhibitions. We work with artists at every stage of their careers, from students to emerging artists and established artists working internationally. Alongside our annual exhibitions from students from Glasgow Kelvin College and Glasgow School of Art we are delighted to present two exhibitions that will take over The Den and Studio space for temporary periods of time in Spring and Summer 2019. In May, we present Timefield, an immersive group exhibition of new artwork, exploring the theme of ageing through the subject of body, land and nature. Home Where Home Is Not is our summer exhibition in partnership with Glasgow Women’s Library. The exhibition asks the question: what and where is home? Particularly, when home is the experience of being from more than one place – a pertinent theme to discuss and explore at this present time.

TIMEFIELD
Ian Cameron | Kate Clayton Frank McElhinney | Annie Peel Lesley Wilson It is often said that we are losing touch with nature, but we are surrounded by nature every day whether in the heart of the city or in the wilds of the countryside. Perhaps we just don’t pay enough attention. Timefield weaves together stories of memory and forgetting, of nature and ageing and draws attention to the fragility of humanity as an integral part of nature. It is an exploration of the passage of time and its effect on the landscape of our bodies and our planet. This is a cross-art collaborative installation developed by five older artists and includes: projections of long exposure photographs showing the impact of time on the body, large scale painted wall-hangings that communicate the force of nature, and a soundscape that integrates spoken word and sound drawn from the natural world. This exhibition is part of Luminate Festival 2019. Sat 27 April – Sat 25 May Monday to Saturdays, 10am – 5pm Free
WORKSHOPS: A series of workshops inspired by the installation will run alongside the exhibition. Please see the Platform website for more details.

SOGOL MABADI AND BIRTHE JORGENSEN: HOME WHERE HOME IS NOT
Presented by Platform in association with Glasgow Womans Library
Home Where Home Is Not, is an ambitious new research and exhibition project featuring Glasgow based artists Sogol Mabadi and Birthe Jorgensen created in partnership with Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) and Platform. Following on from the artist’s coinciding journeys to Iran and Greenland (Aug 2017), places once linked to their respective identities, Sogol and Birthe draw on their own experiences as ‘New Scots’, navigating and negotiating their identities across geographical, cultural and psychological boundaries. Through conversations and creative workshops with groups of women who are from or have settled in Glasgow’s North East, Sogol and Birthe raised and discussed important questions about identity and the experience of being from more than one place in a complex multicultural age. Following a month-long residency at Platform and GWL in early 2019, an exhibition of new work, accompanied by a programme of events, will take place across both venues from late June to early August 2019. Please keep an eye on the Platform website and social media for updates.
