2 1 3 5 4 Attempting to look put together when Here’s five tips to help you look you’re half-awake, short on time and presentable in five minutes or less; freaking out, can seem impossible. But it is definitely doable, and far easier to pull off than you think. Even out your skin tone If your skin tone is the type to scream out the world that you’ve just rolled out of bed with its redness or uneven-ness, applying either tinted moisturizer or BB cream, helps you skip the step between prepping your face and putting on makeup that evens your skin tone.

Cover up those under-eye bags Even if you’ve just slept in, your dark circles may still be overstaying their welcome. This is where the under-eye concealer –preferably with a yellow undertone comes into play, to help make you look brighter and more awake.

Embrace the bed head! Oversleeping usually mean hair-styling is out of question for the day. Since a wash, blow-dry and any sort of straightening/ curling is too time consuming, opt either to rock the natural texture of your bedhead with just simple brush through your locks to untangle, or go for the safe option of a messy bun.

Brighten your lips and cheeks (and eyes if you’re quick!)

Now you’ve essentially whited-out all the discolouration from your face, bring a tinge of colour with some blush and lip gloss/balm. If you’re quick enough you may even have time to get some life into those eyes as well.

Don’t overthink your outfit. Last, but not least, when it comes to outfits pick something quick and easy to wear on days you’re running late. Try not to go something you know is lying at the back of your wardrobe.

HIDDEN IN

GEMS NOTTINGHAM

I have decided to extend the meaning of hidden gem to include a few places that, although easy to find, have a hidden purpose behind the business that you wouldn’t expect on the surface.

BY HARVEY CLITHEROE

Kitty Café

Broadway cinema

J.T. soar

The kitty café is a rehoming care centre for abandoned cats however, instead of succumbing to the depressing aura associated with a rescue home, they turned it into a café where you can pay £6 entry to spend time with the cats and maybe even take one home to what they brand your ‘forever home’. Donations are also welcome as some treatment ent can cost thousands dt to nurse th the catss back to healt health. This airly new bus is af a fairly business with only two cafes in Nottingham and Leeds but I’m sure you’ll agree a ‘purrfect’ business idea that’s n the bound to take off in future.

Ever wished you could afford to see that film you’ve been excited about in the cinema, but student loan couldn’t stretch far enough? Well that’s now an issue of the past with £4.50 for an under 25 tickets at the Broadway cinema. What’s even better is that this cinema plays all sorts of films including past, present and independent films. You can also hire it out to screen your own films. Broadway is a registered charity that aims to inspire creativity and nurture talent in the community. It is completely independent, giving it complete flexibility on how it’s run and it’s prices. Would definitely recommend taking a look on what th they have on on.

This place is so versatile and nuts! You can hire your own professional recording room for £10 with state of the art decks and equipment to have your own private DJ set. Me, and a couple mates went one night in fresher’s week to escape the crowds it delivered. J.T. soar is an ex fruit and vegetable warehouse turned DIY music and arts space. It also includes a hireable recording studio so you can literally DIY your own music. This place was created with the idea of creating g music freely without uniformed people saying what you can and can’t do. A refreshing vision indeed.

BOILER MAKER

Have you ever walked past the Boiler Maker bar mistaking it for a boiler fitting company? Us too. This misleading (and extremely undercover) bar offers a range of fantastic cocktails for all of the cocktail lovers out there. It is located on 36 Carlton Street in Hockley (just look out for the white boiler room). As you can gather from the style of the bar, this bar is really out there to give you a unique experience. The menu is titled ‘technical information’, with a lengthy manual for each of the cocktails- similar to that of a boiler instruction sheet! Although they cannot help you with your boiler problems, they want to ‘assist in wasting your time in the most efficient way possible’. Crowned in 2017 for Best Cocktail Bar, this bar boasts 15 cocktails including the ‘Gin Rickey ‘n Morty’ and ‘Strong Gindependent Woman’ to name a few.

HOCKLEY ARTS CLUB

HOCKLEY ARTS CLUB

Platform liken the Hockley Arts Club to that of a beautiful, nostalgic dream. It has 3 rooms filled with beautiful décor and furniture. You really cannot witness a bar so magical anywhere else is Nottingham. Oh, and the cocktail menu is off the radar!

The Hockley Arts Club is located on 20a Carlton Street. It can easily be missed due the small doorway in between a hair salon and a shop. There are 3 different rooms, each with a unique characteristic. The ground floor is an area for kicking back and relaxing, it has a 1950s vibe with a jukebox and DJs on Friday and Saturdays. The top floor décor and theme changes based on the season.

THE BOILER ROOM

The Boiler Maker has been open for 4 years now, it has acquired many names throughout this time such as the BoilerRoom and BoilerTavern, but has now settled with its current name of Boiler Maker.

Ansel Elgort stars as ‘Baby’, a getaway driver who listens to music to drown out his tinnitus. This film has an epic soundtrack which meshes seamlessly with the plot. A loud, fast-paced action thriller. This is one not to be missed. It is directed by Edgar Wright and is super stylish, as well as funny. Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey and Lily James also star. Following a storm of sexual harassment allegations, it is unlikely that Kevin Spacey will be seen in any films in the near future. His Netflix drama ‘House of Cards’ has been cancelled and he was replaced, scene for scene in Ridley Scott’s movie, ‘All The Money in the World’.

EmpireOnline describes La La Land as a “great musical for people who don’t like musicals”. It is a very cheerful and endearing film and explores the theme of love and ambition. What is NTSU Communities?

NTSU Communities enable you to pursue an activity with a group of friends or other like-minded people. Unlike a society, these groups have less paperwork, are more informal, have less of a long-term commitment while still retaining some of the benefits of societies.

Why start a group?

NTSU Communities are aimed at students who want to get involved with the students’ union and meet like-minded people with similar interests but don’t want the long-term commitment and administrative formality of societies. DMAʼs INTERVIE NTERV EW DMAʼs

BY EMILY MITTON

Though they originate from Australia, the DMA’s popularity has quickly crossed continents with fans growing even on the complete other side of the globe.

Is your music influenced by more modern, or retro, music?

We caught up with Johnny and Tommy as they talked to us about their musical backgrounds, the bands origin story, and how saying "Fuck it" got them where they are today. Even though you’ve been to a lot of countries on your tour, is Australia still the band’s home?

DM

Tommy; Yeah, definitely, I have a flat there and it’s where all my things are. Australia is my home. Particularly in recording the second album because I’ve been at home the whole year apart from a few tours. Not a great amount of touring this year, but next year I should be really busy. Do you like touring, going to a lot of foreign countries?

T; A bit of both I’d say. Definitely influenced by music from the past because I’ve had more time to listen to it, especially growing up. Yeah, but also modern music, and modern sounds. Johnny; The production of music is really amazing these days, we’re really into dance bands and electronic music and stuff like that, and if you can blend the two it’s really good. What’s the bands origin story? T; Jonny and I were in a band together, Jonny was playing bass and I was playing drums and we kinda wrote some songs on the side, then that band fell through and we continued writing together. It kinda just developed from there, then we met Mason.

A

J; We were recording a lot as well, in the house we were living in together. T; I like playing everywhere. There is some- One great thing about the generation thing really exciting about playing in a place we’re in is that home recording became you’ve never been before, especially if you a real thing. Back in the 70’s, or whatevhave a decent crowd. I like playing at home eryou needed a lot of money to go into too. I do like playing festivals, English a big studio to record. We’re pretty festivals have a different kind of energy to fortunate we were able to record our Australian festivals.People are just more up first demo, and learn about song writing for it, they want to get their money’s worth. and learn what it sounded like. 18

MUSIC What’s your favourite song to play live? What’s T T; Lay Down, is my favourite. It’s probably my favourite DMAs song. I like it because it’s got an awesome energy, and it’s also got a really good energy when it’s played acoustically as well. I like all our songs, some get a little “ugh, we’ve got to play this one again.” But I go through stages, and not like playing a song for a while. Straight Dime Dimensions is a song that, for me, in the past sort of ye yyear has really come iTnto its tss own when we play it live. That was a song I originally didn’t really think was that great. n it was live. J; It kind of flourished, when et from That’s one thing we didn’t really get our first record, is that we hadn’t played live before it came out. With this record, not all of them, but most of them we’ve had the chance to play them live a bit.

DM

T; Just jammed them. J; Now, because we have jammed them, there’s a song that’s going to be on the next record, that Tommy wrote the outro because we were jamming it live and then just sporadically just started singing something and that ended up making the cut. To think that melody might not have been in there because we hadn’t done it that way is a scary thought. Melbourne is completely different when he re h we do it live to how it is on the recording. You don’t want to go watch a live ave ve them sound the fuc fu band and have fucking he record. same as the

D

A M

A

Might as well mime it then. Mi

J; Get like stunt doubles, and they ca can mime. m Wouldn’t even have to lleave Australia. T; I can just hang at home. Good idea actually. I wonder if anyone’sactually done that. Not the singer, but I bet there’s been a band and it’s a different guitarist or something. Like he’s been to sick, or drunk, to play and they just get some random guy in.

ARTISTS TO WATCH IN 2018

BY FAITH PRING

A

With the amount of new artists appearing on the scene ever increasing, it can be hard to ever keep track of them all, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

CAMILA CABELLO 2017 was a huge year for Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello as she kick-started her solo career after leaving the girl group Fifth Harmony. Spending a huge five weeks at the coveted number one spot in the official charts and selling over 600,000 copies in the UK alone, her second single ‘Havana’ has performed extremely well worldwide, surpassing all of her expectations who said she was “beyond over the moon” at its success. Her debut album ‘Camila’ was released in January and received rave reviews from critics and fans alike, proving that Camila is well and truly here to stay.

Michael Dappah burst onto our screens when he started out as a comedian on his show SWIL (Somewhere in London) which attracted over one million viewers in its first series alone. Since then, Dappah has gone from strength to strength, releasing his first single ‘Man’s Not Hot’ in September, which has gained over three million streams globally and reached number 5 in the UK charts. Given the surprise success of this song, we’re excited to find out what Big Shaq does next and whether it proves to be just as successful.

MICHAEL DAPAAH (aka. Big Shaq)

Amber Run is a four-piece band from Nottingham who met whilst studying at the University of Nottingham, and they soon released their first EP in 2014 before supporting Kodaline on their tour. Their debut album ‘5am’ was released in 2015 and reached number 36 in the UK charts. After releasing

EYRE LLEW

AMBER RUN 20

After forming their ambient rock band Eyre Llew in 2014, Jack Bennett, Jack Clark and Sam Heaton from Nottingham, have slowly gained prominence on the music scene, even more so after self-releasing their debut album ‘Atelo’ in October. After playing the Dot to Dot festival in 2017, they are planning even more festival appearances in 2018, and another record release for mid-2018 which is bound to be another success story to add to their belts.

their second album in early 2017, it’s no surprise that we’re keeping an eye on these guys to see what they do next.

If you were to have said to me back in January that a Katy Perry song would be one of my most streamed songs of the year - I would have laughed in your face. But hey, life is full of surprises. From bubblegum bass to shimmering dream-pop, these are the songs that soundtracked my 2017. Bon Appetit (feat. With a powerful and unique voice, he has been described as “Paolo Nutini, if he’d grown up on Jamie T.”Funnily enough, he was actually discovered whilst singing karaoke – drunk… His influences include Adele and Amy Winehouse. This is definitely not a gig you’re gonna want to miss.

STUDENT TRAVEL GUIDE TO

AMSTERDAM

You’re probably thinking, “I’m already in my overdraft, how is this article on Amsterdam going to win me over?” Well, challenge accepted. Here’s a little guide of tips and tricks to keeping that all important budget as low as possible, so you can enjoy that extra ocean night out this year.

TRAVELLING THERE When looking for flights, make sure to visit the Skyscanner website to compare bookings for a whole month. As it shows you the cheapest options and which airlines fly on certain days. There are plenty of cheap flights to Amsterdam from cities including Manchester, London and Liverpool.

TRAVELING WHILST IN THE CITY The city centre of Amsterdam can be compared to a jigsaw piece in comparison to say, Paris, which is the complete puzzle – it is tiny in comparison. There is therefore no need to use any public transport links whilst in the city as everything is in walking distance. Some of the cutest canal walks and boutique streets are for pedestrians only, however there is a tram in and around the city centre.

SIGHT-SEEING Before visiting, I imagined endless beautiful canals lined with iconic towering buildings – probably from all the Instagram photos I’d seen! Walking these streets would honestly keep you entertained for days, but there are more time worthy places to be visiting, like the amazing Anne Frank museum. From learning about her time at school to falling in love with her diary, this was a must. The A’dam Lookout is a must-go to as well, as it has breath-taking views of what seemed miles up.

SHOPPING

Before visiting Amsterdam I didn’t think once about going shopping or the fact they would have shops worth visiting – I couldn’t have been more wrong. Ranging from what must have been one of the largest Primarks in the world, to the cutest of boutiques right through to humorous Amsterdam style shops, there was something for everyone. I would be sure to check out the street Nieuwe Zijde Amsterdam for your typical high street stores and Centrum, Bethaniëndwarsstraat for the boutiques.

With Amsterdam being an extremely cheap capital city compared to others that I have visited, such as Madrid and Paris, it was easy to find restaurants for a student budget. I’d recommend Blue Amsterdam – if you want to enjoy lunch with a stunning rooftop view then this is the place for you. The food was amazing and for the price it is definitely worth a visit. I had the lunch deal of a: small veggie soup, smoked salmon on toast, side salad, homemade drink, a hot drink and a cookie for only €18. Make sure to look out for the restaurant though, as the lift for the restaurant is located in a shopping centre.

LIFE STYLE I hope this article makes you want to save a bit of your maintenance loan, and put it towards a long weekend away in Amsterdam this year… Go on, make your overdraft stretch it!

WHERE TO TAKE YOUR DATE IN NOTTINGHAM BY KATIE SHARMAN

Nottingham isn’t the most obvious city of romance – but fun fact, it was once the home to romantic poet Lord Byron. There are lots of places you can go and things you can do in England’s answer to Paris, that you can explore with your significant other or even your close friends:

LIVE SHOWS For those fellas that don’t want to be

dragged along to a soppy romance play then Nottingham Playhouse will be performing an uplifting drama called ‘Wonderland’ on the 14th February. You can expect dark humour and tension in this gripping story. This is also amazing for students as you can pay whatever you can afford from as little as 50p. Just turn up before 7:30pm with some spare change.

CINEMA Alternatively, The Savoy Cinema could make

a nice change from your usual Cin-eworld. It is a charming cinema offering student tickets for just £4.75.

PARK If the weather permits it, Wollaton Park offers

beautiful scenery for a hand in hand stroll around and enjoy the more natural side to Nottingham. The grounds of the hall are home to numerous deer who are now quite accustom to people, allowing you to get much closer than you might think!

AFTERNOON TEA

DINNER The Fat Cat is the perfect place for a romantic meal

with fairy lights streaming down the windows, it also offers 2-4-1 cocktails and 50% off food for students!

DRINKS There are countless cute and quirky bars all over

Nottingham. The Curious Manor is a funky bar in Trinity Square and offers 2 for £10 cocktails during Happy Hours. The Hockley Arts Club is another hidden gem in the backstreets of Hockley with beautifully decorated rooms to eat or drink. The Botanist is an Alice in Wonderland themed venue where you can expect your drinks to come in little watering cans and plant pots. There are plenty of things to do - so no need to be sad and alone in bed watching Netflix! Go out and love your surroundings and the people around you.

TO O HOW & S SURVIVE URVIVE RVIVE SURVIVE TRA VEL

With the festive season - and all the lazy days that come with it – behind you, it’s time for students to face the dreaded exam period that is upon them. If the thought of coursework deadlines and test papers sets your heart racing and anxiety levels soaring, then you’re not alone!

EXA

But there re are plenty of things you can do to help yourself feel more at ease.

M

Have short periodssooff revisions;

Students spend most of exam season cooped up in the library for hours on end. Well, spending 12 hours sat in a cold and hard chair, doesn’t exactly seem to be helping you ace that exam is it? Try to have short, intense periods of revision rather than spending all day in the library. Even if it’s just two hours a day, try to make the most of those two hours, instead of spending ten out of 12 hours daydreaming. The end result is that you are likely to come away with more accomplished in the two hours than a whole day spent at a library.

Set a goal and reward yourself when you achieve it; Give yourself a target to reach. If you tell yourself you are going to finish one chapter within one hour, and if you manage to achieve it. Reward yourself. Take a break. Watch an episode of your favourite show, take a walk in a nearby park, grab a coffee with your friend.

Don’t be intimidated by the revision styles or progress made by fellow students; Your style of revision is your own. If a technique of revising works for you, then don’t second guess yourself on the basis of a friend’s technique. If group studies don’t work for you, then don’t do it – just to satisfy someone else. If your brain works better during the night, then do it at night.

Practise meditation and/or anything hing ng that th t de-stresses you;

R T S

It is very easy to get carried ed away in the stress stres and anxiety of exams. It’s important to take t’s therefore very imp impo a moment for yourself. if you can. ourself. urself. Practice meditation, me If not, do anything ng that works work to de-stresses you- listen wor to music, clean, cook, a book. Do anything that ook, read ook r puts your mind at ease.

Consult tutors for support and advice ; Sometimes, in spite of everything you do, the stress gets the better of you. While usually you would consult a friend- chances are they are going through the same thing. Don’t be afraid to seek advice and support from your tutors. It’s what they are there for, after all. Most of all remember, that while your coursework and exams are an important part of your university life, it’s not the everything. So work hard and do your best, take it as an opportunity to learn something, but don’t let it define you! 29
