Jay was born in Italy in 1988. During college for the first time he kept his hands on a camera as short film director. From that moment he never stopped shooting. He moved to Milan and he started to be photographer improving his personal cinematic look inspired by music and cinema icons. When he was 23 he moved to London exporting his style from Italy.
Ritianne Muscat known as Ritty Tacsum is a largely self-taught experimental photographer and multimedia artist who has a keen and sensitive eye for the abnormal, absurd, weird and surreal. Having started a course at MCAST, she quickly felt the confines of the educational system stifling her creativity and sought to explore and expand her horizons solo.
Born and raised in New York City, Marley Kate graduated from NYU, and went on to study photography at the School of Visual Arts. With a focus on fashion and beauty, Marley is able to capture a sense of playfulness and energy in her photos. Her style is luscious and ethereal. Her dream is lofty yet simple, to shoot fashion for the magazines, websites and brands she admires most.
Michael Kailas is a NY based fashion and beauty photographer with an fond eye for womenswear, and beauty editorial work.
Model / Photographer Aaron Ryan was born in Buffalo, NY 1990 and shot the local skate scene growing up. Once an All-American athlete now turned fashion photographer.

It’s Better To Burn Than Fade Away
Editor’s Letter Waking up to face the world on over drive has become the norm for many of us. The thought of growing old is one that scares many, including myself. There is nothing which puts me off most than the notion of not having ticked off all my to do list, and in this day and age it seems that to do list seems to be growing longer and longer. This issue is a visual treat based on the Live Fast Die Young ideology which many of us seem to have taken on to achieve our goals. We worked with a selection of great artists who all contributed their rendition of the issue title. We also spoke to some local talents Sef Farrugia and JP Azzopardi and interviewed upcoming designer Craig Green, a sure one to watch. For those that do not know this is our last issue entirely produced in Malta as of the upcoming issue we’re going to be based in London and giving you more direct content and interviews from designers based around Europe whilst keeping our Maltese flair. Having previously studied at the London College of Fashion and recently finishing a BA(Hons) Fashion Degree at Ravensbourne university specializing in Textiles, Sef Farrugia’s creativity is certainly going places, with internships with Giles Deacon, Joanne Hynes and Craig Lawrence already under her belt. Not to mention the fact that her collection pieces have been worn by Eliza Doolittle for her 2011 South America tour and she has also been featured on Fiasco magazine and sosolo.co.uk. You can definitely say that Sef Farrugia is one to watch. Having mentally placed her gorgeous bralets and curve hugging pencil skirts on my wishlist, I meet up with the designer where she lets us know a little bit more about her designs, inspirations and all that makes the talented woman she has become today.
M: What inspired you to create such a collection and what do your unique designs mean to you? S: I had been back home for a summer holiday and I ended up looking at childhood films… like “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and then I illustrated this character… It was inspired by the Victorian / Edwardian times and the British colonial era. It was very much

SEF FARRUGIA, the talented young designer influenced by re creating a value that is being lost today… the desire of owning both quality and beauty. I am very visual in my work, so all who mesmerized the fashion pack at the the prints, knits and embroideries had to be very present as well as Mercedes-Benz Malta Fashion Awards is color, textures etc. Everything was created from scratch. After all the making waves in the fashion world and it’s research, it ended up being more about creating a lifestyle that this character lives in… easy to see why. It’s all about connections and so if you’re just starting out and you don’t know anyone and no one knows you, it is a mission but I like to believe that it isn’t an impossible one. You’ve already been extremely successful with your collection and it’s only just the beginning. What are your ambitions now that your name is being recognized? Thank you very much. I am considering various options at the moment… nothing is set in stone! I will be working on another capsule collection, which I will be showing at Southsea Fashion Week in August, and also working on a High-end satin/silk scarf collection, which will be launched later on

Of course! Where do I start ?! There’s always something happening … I had to convince everyone to leave on my own, to study abroad… I think I was 17. Then, in the first couple of months in the UK, I had a Fraud issue… I think I have moved houses about 8 times in 5 years … and the list goes on. It’s just how it is. What do you do to distress and relax? Do you have any hobbies when you’re not working? Depends if I am in Malta or in the UK! It is 2 different lifestyles. It’s Simple vs Drama. I guess we need both in life. In Malta I am a whole lot relaxed…I enjoy going by the sea, eating a bit of bread and watermelon, spending time with family and my dogs, going for walks, taking photos. In the UK I am mostly on my own with no TV and so I’m listening to some good jazz music, going to galleries, watching a good film, drawing…

I am also obsessed with history and language… I can never know enough, especially the Maltese one; it is a mystery in itself so it is more intriguing. I don’t think these are hobbies… I guess I don’t have one! What are your current three fashion musthaves of the moment and your favorite designer? To be honest I am not the biggest ‘fashion follower’… My must haves most times are the same every year and probably every season.

I don’t have a favorite designer, of course I have those that I respect and look up to like Missoni for their quality and Azzedine Alia for the craftsmanship and working by his own terms, but I truly admire anyone who wakes up in the morning with positive energy and keeps going day after day. What do you want your future to look like and do you have any advice you could give to young designers who are just starting out? Hopefully the future will have a never-ending corridor of opportunities and as for advice… well, I am just starting out myself… but so far, the best advice I could give is that every individual will go through different paths, make sure you follow and create your own and not one that others have already set out THE LIVE FAST DIE YOUNG ISSUE 16

collections from London Collections
TOPMAN Design presented the return of the pleated shorts in a sweet and bright selection of colour blocked outfits which left us with a selection of 80’s skater, raver outfit sets. Our favourite pieces were the pleated shorts and the cut off shoe sandals and backpacks. Over all TOPMAN presented a very bright, young collection aimed to sell.
E Tautz presented a lovely tailored collection with great standout pieces such as the pictured cross slinged fuschia cape/ jacket combination bringing what would have been a very monochrome based collection to life.
The heritage brand Pringle of Scotland kept it’s cool for spring summer 2013 with a selection of very neutral dandy outfits with looks being very safe yet contemporary. With superb styling the brand brought together a selection of simple looks which focused on the cut of the outfits and the play on texture. Despite this being similar to many other designer labels for ss 2013 Pringle of Scotland boasted a very young and edgy cast of models. #Trending

Katie Eary tapped into the young skater market this season and following last season’s baroque comeback the designer presented oversized tee shirts and shorts with large psychadelic baroque print. Models we decked out in backpacks and skate boards.
The standout collection at London Fashion Collections was this by Xander Zhou, bejing based designer pushed forward a polished, sleek and edgy look which played with a mixture of textures and vibes. With all looks being very different to each other Zhou kept conformity via the distinct cuts he presented. Definitely proved to be a breath of fresh air in a somewhat very safe fashion week.
Jonathan Saunders opted for a sleek presentation and pushed forward a modern, eclectic colour blocked dandy. Colourful glasses, sharp trousers and a delightful set of micro print patterns all over his outfits. Electric blues and wild orange combinations led to a balanced modern collection. James Long created some of the most interesting cuts this season at London Fashion Week, with cuts which would quickly link to shows at Milan Fashion week, the tailored, sophisticated yet glamorous collection was one of the strongest collections showed. With sleeveless vests, cut off tees, and high waisted 3/4 trouser shorts this collection could have easily fit in Stefano Pilati’s past shows. We’re excited for more.

These past couple of years have seen Green tie with Luke Brooks to win the L’Oréal Professional Creative Award with his digitally printed tie-dye collection; get first prize for his entry in the New Era’s ninetieth anniversary baseball cap competition; and collaborate with Christopher Shannon to design headwear, and Topman to create a 2mx3m piece of denim patchwork. On top of that, in 2010, he joined forces with Bally of Switzerland to create a range of shoes. He has called this collaboration with Bally

Upon meeting with JP Azzopardi, a contemporary artist who delves in the art of sculpture, I experienced a renaissance within my soul, a rebirth that brought me back to my ever passionate love for the arts.
As we sat at a table in the corner of an Art Nouveau inspired café, sipping at our cold beverages, I listened to JP speak of his art and his longing to sustain himself through his sculptures and his passions. Apart from his evident passion for art, while looking through his portfolio, I couldn’t help but appreciate his attention to detail, patience with the vast materials he uses and the sheer technique and ability that he portrays in a highly nonchalant manner.

In one of his depictions entitled Burn No. 1, that on first glance seems to be a human figure, he uses wire to resemble creepers that symbolise the ever present pull of technology on our everyday lives. Another depiction of a bed called Burn No. 2 covered in sand is also a depiction of Saṃskāra. Both these sculptures were constructed out of mismatched pieces of scrap JP found lying about to bring about a final product of magnitude and awe.
Inspired by both contemporary and historical affairs, JP makes it a point to give all his sculptures a background through which they can speak and ultimately come to life. The older works which I would think most of us art enthusiasts are fully acquainted with struck me as powerful and full of character but his newer pieces opened my eyes to a whole new world.
The sand in these two pieces, together with the use of locust in the structure denote a link to the Old Testament story of the Killing of the First born in the time of Moses - a plague that infests our lives and takes over our being that of earthliness.

The symbolism links between the character and religion is seen in the way in which the Platonic halo resembles very godly figures, the piece at the centre resembles a fossil, the mask represents the same masks worn in the era of the plague to prevent contamination and the corroded knife in his hands resembles any offering presented in history.

His past studies in philosophy andanthropology definitely show in his art and especially in my favourite piece that was built in ode of Richard Dawkins, a post Darwin figure who is best described as an evolutionary biologist who talks of ‘selfish genes’ and such like factors. His piece entitled (Dawkin’s Fundamentalism) Trickster, which encompasses philosophy, science and religion in a rather visionary way.
This piece struck me mostly due to the vast amounts of material that can be seen in the structure, from curtain rings to represent the eyes, to lace in his frock and bones to imitate the hands of Dawkins is sheer talent that by all means should be taken highly into
