Summer in the Med once again brings a longing for the sea, a desire to live and share the marine lifestyle. Every year the mega- and gigayacht fleet increases in number, attracting the admiring looks that enthusiasts, owners and tourists reserve for them.

And during the summer months the social media feature images of ever more attractive yachts, leaving us dreaming about what a cruise on board would be like. And you’ll often hear the words, “If that’s what it’s like outside, I wonder what’s on the inside!”

Nowadays designers and yards strive to create elegant, harmonious exterior lines. This applies to the interiors, too, designed for functionality. And it’s the “inside” that we’re focusing on here, because there really is a lot to talk about. Through our features, which you can also enjoy on your smartphone via the QR codes, we want to help you step on board and experience the furnishings and spaces that will host lucky guests.

Anyone visiting the yachts on display at the summer boat shows at Cannes, Monaco and Genoa will enjoy the unique sensations to be experienced when walking on soft, perfumed carpets in spaces with often unexpected but always exciting geometries, and appreciate the innovative materials the furnishings are made of, always with an increasing emphasis on sustainability.

Happy reading!

DEPUTY CEO

AND CEO BOAT DIVISION GROUPE BENETEAU

Mr. Girotti, what’s your impression of the market as a whole right now? 2023 will continue to be a positive year for all the stakeholders. Even better than last year because all the delivery dates have been moved. That means that companies’ balance sheets will stay in the black, thanks to backlog dynamics: all the orders that weren’t delivered last year and are being delivered late will compensate. Having said that, we are seeing a slowdown in the market. The real market dynamics will shift more to the sales results for 2024.

And where does the Bénéteau Group fit into that picture?

It affects us too. Just a few weeks ago, we raised market guidance both in terms of our net operating result and revenues because there has been an improvement in the visibility of the supply crisis which means we can guarantee our achievable revenues. 2023 will continue to be a positive year overall for us with serious growth - we’re talking in terms of + 20-25 percent year on year.

You’ve refocused your markets and resized output. Tell us about your strategy?

Since 2019, we’ve been honing and applying our strategic plan, which is called “Let’s go beyond”. We have three goals: 1) to rationalise our offering by looking at the Group’s interests rather than the interests of the individual brands, reinforcing the brand equity for all the brands we’ve held onto. So we’ve had to make some decisions, some of which were tough on a human and professional level (closing facilities and selling certain branches). 2) We refocused our product plans on the basis of the most strategic market segments and this reduced competition between the individual brands internally. The result was that we have now moved from over 200 boats to 150, increased revenues, re-saturated our production lines to a greater extent with fewer models which helped us recover our production efficiency. 3) Services: we’ve invested in a boat club In the US which allows users to pay a monthly or regular fee to gain access to a fleet of craft and use them for

a set time, rather than owning a boat; sailing-wise, we’ve bought both the largest operator in the charter sector, Doimo Yacht Charter, and the third largest, Navigare, to improve and optimise the boating holiday experience.

Which segment do you feel stronger in: sailing or motor?

Sailing is our historic, less fragmented sector. But then we have cases such as Prestige in which we’ve acted very boldly and now lead the 40’ to 60’ flybridge sector both in terms of revenues and volumes. We made a massive investment in launching the third generation of flybridges which will change the face of Prestige to an even greater extent, and we launched two motor catamarans, a 50’ and a 70’. At the same time, we also launched the third generation of the XLine full-beam monohulls, which explore new content to retain our leadership there.

What are you doing in terms of sustainability?

We are trying to do our bit in our own small way with various initiatives aimed at a 360-degree approach to sustainability. We have outlined an integration plan to offer various alternative propulsion systems for all the different segments we are involved in. We’ve also done testing for a whole slew of POCs (proof of concept), experimenting with alternative fuels. On top of that, we are sounding out the carbon footprint side of polyester (plastic) creation: we have the first 100% recyclable boat made from Elio 100 resin. We’ve already built two production examples which we presented to a sustainability seminar as proof of how strong our belief in the possibility of series production is. We are continuing to work with APER (Association for Eco-Responsible Pleasure Boating), which is in charge of dismantling and recycling boats. We pay taxes on all our new boats to support the dismantling sector. We are also adding higher and higher percentages of biological resins to reduce CO2 impacts right along our composite supply chain.

Monday to Thursday business meetings in PHOENIX2, on Friday a 6-hour executive board meeting at the company’s GLOBAL HQ, and next week the same again, jetting from one meeting to the next – always AVANTI , AVANTI! And then finally:

Vacations with my family. A week off, just us: my wife VALERIE and our kids. What a contrast, what an OASIS of peace. Our son RONIN , an ACE in sports, in the CORAL OCEAN all day long – wind-surfing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing. Our daughters AMADEA and TITANIA enjoying their school holidays on board the spacious yacht, too. My wife and I, swimming in the main deck’s infinity pool, and later indulging in A+ quality dinning. In the evenings, we’d go down to the cinema to watch movies, or we’d sit on deck, looking into the star-lit sky over the PACIFIC , just to wake up the next morning, pampered by the RISING SUN ’s first warm beams. Tell you what – the opportunities to recharge the batteries were simply LIMITLESS !

CAN WEATHER FORECASTS BE RELIED ON WHEN THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING?

Summer has arrived at last and we can once again return to our first love, the sea. As we fill our lungs with the salt air on board our yachts, we find ourselves logging on to the weather forecasts on maritime sites and the inevitable Apps. As well as the differences between the various prognostications, what strikes me is the almost general unreliability of the information.

I’ve nothing against those who try, in this time of climate change, to provide information that is as accurate as possible, but I’d like to point out that unfortunately the methods of calculation used until now are pretty unreliable, and the professionals are currently developing new scenarios to create a different basis for their predictions. It’s increasingly true that local weather conditions can undergo abrupt changes, a phenomenon that can be caused by even a small rise in average temperatures and changing land and sea conditions. There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence about the many discrepancies between what the forecasts have said and the actual conditions sailors have encountered at sea - yachts

have even suddenly found themselves facing unexpected squalls and rougher seas where the bulletins indicated only a steady Force 2.

That’s why I now recommend taking great care in planning our movements, and where possible those who can do so should check not only the weather forecasts but also the most recent possible satellite images to get a picture of what to expect. In all cases it’s always a good idea to secure everything firmly before you sail, even if the presence of guests makes this rather impractical, to avoid damage and injury. Too often the hull and equipment of modern yachts isn’t up to the task of handling rough seas – finding yourself in difficulty and slamming into a wave can happen from one moment to the next. So, owners and clients, have a little patience if everything on board isn’t too tidy and accessible when under way!

I urge skippers to be unyielding on these points, because if there’s any damage or someone gets hurt the blame will fall on the person in charge of the yacht, not the gods of the sea and weather!

The new Riva 54 Metri promises to be the largest Riva model ever built and the good news is that the contract has been signed for the first example. An elegant confection of 54 metres of sleek, sporty lines and generous volumes, the yacht is designed to create the ultimate in onboard luxury, comfort and relaxation. Drawing on the legendary brand’s recent design signatures, which include reverse-angled windows and clever chiaroscuro interplays, it is the result of the design marriage par excellence between Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, co-foundres of Officina Italiana Design, the Piero Ferrari-led Strategic Product Committee and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. It’s no surprise therefore that the Riva 54 Metri has an amazing 370 sqm of deck space with a beach area that offers guests great privacy as well as contact with the water. There is even a beautiful wellness area complete with spa, pool and gym. Thanks to an all-aluminium construction, the 54 Metri will deliver a very brisk 18 knots at full throttle. The first example will go to her lucky owner in 2025 and work has already begun at the Riva Superyachts Division in Ancona, a state-of-the-art 80,000 square metre facility where all the brand’s 50 to 90m yachts are built. www.riva-yacht.com

Judgingby newly released renders of Nauta Design’s Moonflower 72, currently in build at the Wider Superyacht Hub in Venice, the new beauty will have crisp, clean lines and an innovative beach club. This imposing steel and aluminium superyacht also packs Wider’s new generation hybrid propulsion as well as striking the perfect balance between style and comfort with no fussy details sullying the connection with the marine environment. At first glance, the 72’s profile has

a blade-like sharpness. However, this is softened by organic contours, chamfered folds and balanced volumes, drawing on a synthesis of male and female forms. The result is a timelessly elegant yacht that exudes not just strong character but also a sense of peace and freedom. It also sports Nauta Design’s patented The Island beach club concept with multiple folddown aft parameter-hugging platforms that extend it to a dizzying 117 sqm. www.nautadesign.com

TheSpaceline Concept is the brainchild of the owner of Ultimate Catamarans who wanted to craft aluminium superyachts with absolutely unprecedented deck space and interior volumes. Luxury Projects created the astonishing platform, exterior styling and interior design with three catamaran models to choose: the Spaceline 88, 120 and 130. The interiors are very high end and will have a comfortable, welcoming vibe. Owners have a superb palette of materials to

choose from, of course, including hard-wearing leather. These cats are sporty and elegant with large windows everywhere, drawing light into the interiors. All of the luxury cabins have private balconies. By way of example, the 88 is a tri-deck sleeping 12 guests as well as 225 sqm of interiors and 220 sqm of al fresco space. The top of the range 130 is a four-deck ocean-going explorer cat offering 386 sqm of interiors and 695 sqm of outdoor space. www.luxury-projects.it

Presented at the Boot Dusseldorf, Ferretti Yachts’ new InFYnito series offers owners an extension of their own home as well as strong visual continuity between interiors and exterior, with an unprecedented connection to the horizon. The explorer-inspired series was designed by the Piero Ferrari-headed Strategic Product Committee and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, while the exterior and hull designs are the work of Filippo Salvetti, with Ideaeitalia crafting the interiors. The debut

InFYnito 90 model offers occupants almost 50 per cent more al fresco living areas (100 sqm) and more than 25 per cent more interior space (a massive 140 sqm) than normal. There is a choice of layouts for all decks, ranging from open-plan spaces to more formal privacy-focused arrangements. Sporting a new highefficiency hull, the InFYnito 90 has a top speed of 22 knots, a cruising speed of 17 knots and a 1,200 nm range at 12 knots. www.ferretti-yachts.com

Clothedin straight, clean lines, Floating Life’s boldly modern Kiribati 38 project will be built by the CCN-Gruppo Baglietto while Zero13 is supplying the naval architecture and Satura Studio the interior and exterior designs. Sporting a hull that is 10% more hydrodynamically efficient than comparable craft, to cut fuel consumption at all speeds and deliver a safer, more comfortable time at sea, the yacht delivers a 5,000 nm range at 10 knows. This is a genuine explorer yacht that relishes adventure

and long spells away from shore (there’s storage a plenty aboard). Efficiency, reliability and robustness are the orders of the day. A 38.7 m hull and generous beam of 8.5 translate to astonishingly large volumes spread over five decks and an uninterrupted lower deck layout that can connect cabins directly with the beach area. The new beauty accommodates 12 guests in six suites, including the owner, cared for by eight crew. floatinglife.com

Baglietto chose Portofino to present the first T52 to be built. The Francesco Paszkowski-designed steel and aluminium displacement model is Baglietto’s first hybrid yacht and a huge success. The eight unit has been recently sold: a sparklingly stylish modern creation with slender, sinuous lines that both reveal Baglietto’s contemporary soul and pay homage to its tradition. The result is an elegant beauty with oodles of personality. Baglietto’s new signature open transom spread

over three levels sets the tone as does a large pool with an ingenious up-down floor for extra deck space when required. Wide full-height windows on three sides of the upper deck create an airy lounge that can be used in good weather and bad.

The 24m-long sun deck offers unparalleled space for a craft of this size, in a nod to Baglietto’s traditional displacement craft. Twin Cat C32s give a cruising speed of 11 knots, topping out at 16. www.baglietto.com

Apreamare has whipped the wraps off its new flagship, a 27m fullcustom, semi-planing navetta that retains the Maestro family feel but also adds innovative solutions and a new take on style, form and liveability to the mix. Designed by Marco Cavali and Umberto Tagliavini for a long-time Maestro client seeking a confident larger yacht that could tackle new adventures, the Maestro 88 has specific hull geometry for a soft, safe, comfortable ride even in adverse conditions. The new beauty also cruises silently at 18 knots but can hit over 22 knots when required. Casali’s strikingly elegant exterior lines are in constant dialogue with the interior which yield 360 degree sea views. Owners can customise the interiors right down to the number of cabins, furniture and concept. The first example has four cabins, four bathrooms, a study and relaxation corner, but up to five guest cabins and two for the crew are possible. www.apreamare.it

UNITED TO PROTECT OUR PLANET’S FUTURE

Milan was the setting for the first Blue Economy Summit organised by One Ocean Foundation, bringing together scientists, entrepreneurs and representatives from international bodies to discuss ways of protecting our oceans and the urgent need for action to build a blue economy that keeps marine resources safe for future generations

Below, bottom, Riccardo Bonadeo, President of the One Ocean Foundation, with Marco Tronchetti Provera, Together with the partners he intends making this an annual event so that the Blue Economy summit can open up a new way forward. Top, right, Giovanna Vitelli among the speakers.

The first Blue Economy summit was held at Milan’s Bocconi University and live streamed worldwide. The event was organised by the One Ocean Foundation, an Italian not-for-profit operating internationally for the protection of the marine environment, and enjoyed the institutional partnership of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. For the first time a round table was launched in Italy on the importance of acting to safeguard the oceans and the urgent need to build a blue economy that keeps marine resources safe for future generations.

Presenter Terry Garcia, former long-serving president of the National Geographic Society, welcomed to the stage global leaders from the worlds of science, enterprise and Institutions under the slogan “We do not talk, we walk

the talk”. Also present was a panel of Italian executives, including Giovanna Vitelli, President of Azimut |Benetti, representing the yacht-building Industry and Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive Vice President Pirelli, in his role as owner. This gathering of authoritative voices discussed the current state of environmental awareness in industry, with a special emphasis on marine resources. The roster of international guests also included iconic oceanographer Sylvia Earle and Kilaparti Ramakrishna, one of the world’s greatest experts in environmental policy. Earle is now 87 years old but still stands on the front line of ocean defence. In her words, “Awareness is the first step we must take in dealing with the problem. We can all a play our part and contribute our skills to obtain significant results”. And under the slogan “We are all droplets of the ocean. We can manage if we act as one”, Ms. Kitlang Kabua, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade for the Republic of the Marshall Islands, described how island populations experience the effects of rising sea levels and coastal erosion every day, highlighting the pressing need to take concrete action to combat the problems facing our planet’s oceans, problems that will have an increasingly damaging impact on our lives and the lives of our children.

BAGLIETTO TOWARDS ZERO EMITIONS

The Italian yard Baglietto has made a firm commitment to achieving a target of zero emissions. It’s called “Bzero Working for an evolving future” where Bzero is the first and perhaps the most important of the nine Bs that comprise Baglietto’s value system - Bold, Boutique, Balance, Borderless, Brave, Background, Brilliant, Beauty. The initiative is based on the use of green hydrogen as an energy source, and currently involves the construction of a system prototype that will then be installed on Baglietto yachts over 50 metres in length. The prototype will be used to develop an operating procedure that optimises the technical elements, enabling the yacht to obtain the naval certification that will allow the system to be used on board the yachts. It will also help develop the system’s ability to refill the hydrogen tanks autonomously or from external sources, compensating for the lack of infrastructure and speeding up refuelling. The power station forms part of a virtuous system, contributing to the yard’s energy production cycle. “The BZERO project is a significant starting point in overcoming the great challenge of the future, underpinned by a deep sense of responsibility”, says Diego Michele Deprati, CEO of Baglietto, “But it also confirms Baglietto’s pioneering vision and its commitment to an increasingly sustainable and green yacht-building industry”. The system also has an exciting commercial potential. “With this technology on board it’s possible to imagine zero emissions for up to 75 hours, and sailing 120 nautical miles at 7 knots”, says Fabio Ermetto, Baglietto’s commercial director. “In fact, the combined use of hydrogen and batteries will make it possible to obtain four times the available

energy produced by modern batteries, with an undoubted financial advantage for owners, too”, Baglietto has also recently set up a department, “Baglietto Energy”, dedicated to the study of new, eco-sustainable technology. Its remit is to research the implementation of alternative energy sources and their application in the marine sector. Baglietto is working with six internationally renowned partners, all with research and development teams in ItalyArco Technologies, Bluenergy Revolution, Enapter, H2boat and Siemens Energy, with RINA playing the role of certification agency at all stages of the project. Baglietto has also forged an agreement with Portofino

GENOA HOSTS THE FIRST WORLD SUSTAINABILITY FORUM

Thefirst edition of the Shaping the Future - World Yachting Sustainability Forum has taken place in Genoa, hosting a debate on the importance of creating shared initiatives in the yacht-building industry. The ultimate aim is to fall in line with the objectives of the UN’s Agenda 2030 and the Green Deal, the EU’s green commitment that aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The event, organised by Confindustria Nautica with

the International Boat Industry (IBI), saw the participation of over 100 entrepreneurs from Italy’s yacht-building industry as well as guests from international organisations and the world media. The event was opened by the President of Confindustria Nautica, Saverio Cecchi, illustrating the pioneering role that Italy’s pleasure sailing industry is taking on in response to future challenges and managing new opportunities. Stefano Pagani Isnardi,

Research Office Director for Confindustria Nautica, pointed out that while the yacht industry already has a minimal environmental footprint, it is investing heavily in technological innovation and is now entering a period of genuine progress towards new sustainability objectives. A round table with a panel of international guests - Jeff Wasil (NMMA Director of Environment, Health & Safety Compliance), Nicola Pomi (Director Yacht and Superyacht division, Volvo Penta), Michele Francioni (Vice President, MSC Cruises) and Troy Baltic and Erik Dellborg of McKinsey - discussed the most important challenges facing the sector. All agreed that the nautical industry must continue to share the successes already achieved in the progress towards decarbonisation and focus on the importance of a collective approach. “Confindustria Nautica continues to play a crucial awarenessraising role in companies in the sector”, said Marina Stella, director general of Confindustria Nautica, “and will also continue to support them in this transition by supporting the construction of comprehensive networks and initiating talks with the association’s Sustainability Committee, which takes an active role in all international panels.

A START-UP FOR ECOLOGICAL YACHTS

Santelmo,

the new yacht-building yard that recently made its debut at the Milan Design Week, is to design its cutting-edge yachts at Bolzano’s international research and innovation hub, NOI Techpark. Opened in 2017, the South Tyrol technology park hosts some of the most promising start-ups, research centres and businesses working to support Italy’s progress towards an environmental and economic transition. NOI Techpark’s decision to work with the brand, owned by Michele Chierici (left) and Marta Ghirardelli, is the result of their common objectives. All members of the NOI Techpark community share a passionate interest in eco-sustainable innovation, a concept that underpins Santelmo’s design philosophy. All the yard’s yachts are built from aluminium alloy, and will contain more than 90% renewable materials. They will also feature fuel cells powered by green hydrogen.

The work carried out by Forethinking for Solbian focussed on eco-design and its future development and is in line with EU directives on extending producers’ responsibilities. The project is based on a tailor-made analytical method for assessing the product’s environmental impact throughout its entire life. This was followed by the development of a parametric model for research and innovation activities based on scientific data, wit the aim of reducing the ecological impact of product and processes. There are two main challenges to overcome in the successive phases of the analysis – to further reduce the impact of materials, already lower than that produced by traditional panels, and design new systems for panel re-use and materials recovery.

Open-air living is experiencing a seemingly unstoppable growth in popularity. Our enjoyment of outdoor settings reflects a rediscovered joie-de-vivre that’s best experienced in the open air. The boundary between interior and exterior spaces is increasingly less welldefined. At the heart of it all is liveability. Enjoying the sky and the horizon, in the city or on board a yacht, no longer means making sacrifices – now it’s all about comfort and stylistic choices, taste and colours. The outdoors is more than ever an expression of who we are – and it pampers us. Earthy colours, textures and evocations of the natural world are presented at the Milan Design Week 2023. Fabrics and upholstery are no longer just technical, they are beautiful. Woven materials are everywhere, evidence of a timeless artisanal passion. They also appear in sofas and chairs, with backs worked in links of various sizes recalling traditional methods. The outdoor spaces become modular, too – pouffes, small tables and oversize armchairs help construct interchangeable sets that smoothly transform the settings into whatever best suits the moment. Not forgetting the evergreen nautical styles, present as always but in chic, sophisticated versions. Sailors’ stripes are now replaced by more refined fabrics and patterns.

Sinuous and elegant, this yacht forms part of Sanlorenzo’s range of asymmetrical models. With a length of 27.6o metres it offers some surprising, spacious and versatile layouts, like the saloon overlooking the sea. Interior and exterior design are by Zuccon International Project

60 [ COVER STORY ]
61

he first example of the SL90A range, this successful 27.60 model from the flybridge line - eleven have been launched so far – is based on the asymmetry concept introduced by Sanlorenzo, now applied for the first time to a yacht below thirty metres in length. Interior and exterior design was developed by the Zuccon International Project, creating a visually coherent yacht laid out over six decks, hosting six guests in three cabins on the lower deck and the owner and partner in the main deck suite. The asymmetrical layout, obtained by eliminating the port walkway on the main deck and siting it on the superstructure roof, enables spaces to be redesigned to create greater comfort and convenience by providing extra square metres of interior space and a new exterior viewpoint.

In true Sanlorenzo tradition, the external lines are streamlined and sober. Seen from outside the technical glass one-way windows integrated into the sides are the same colour as the hull livery, allowing light to flood the interiors without compromising the yacht’s clean lines. The interior decor features a warm, sophisticated colour palette with no jarring contrasts. The Canaletto walnut used for structural furnishings, walls and flooring provides a unifying theme, while the other elements create a play of greys - leathers with different grains, fabrics, metals and metallic paint. Solutions like the irregular combination on some walls of walnut laths and mirrors create a pleasing sense of movement and in the owner’s suite, together with other vertical elements – the leather bedhead, for example - generate the sensation that the space is higher than it really is. For this type of yacht the Sanlorenzo yard offers total customisation of the decor. “The owner of the SL90A no.1”, says Mimo Stelitano, Interior Design Manager at Sanlorenzo, “introduced only a few functional details, as well as some reflecting his personal tastes. We integrated them into the overall concept”. For example, as the owner will spend long periods on board he has added some storage units and wanted to personalise the saloon by mounting a large photo that means a lot to him on the sliding panel that conceals the TV. He has modified the fly deck furniture – he has replaced the classic formal chairs around the table with a sofa and to aft there is modular seating that can be transformed from sofa to sunpad. As a result this lovely terrace, with glass railings permitting an uninterrupted view of the sea, can be enjoyed throughout the day.

“The concepts of transformability and use of the spaces”, says Stelitano, “are also being developed on quite sizeable yachts like this 27-metre model. People are beginning to prefer flexible solutions to areas with a limited function”. This is also evident in the saloon interior, where the adjustable height dining table becomes part of the conversation zone, eliminating the classic separation between the two areas. “We know the interior dining room is not used very often, so we chose a solution that retains this area but integrates it into the saloon”.

The idea of “asymmetry” has enabled the yard to maximise the interior space in the saloon and owner’s suite and provide the suite with direct access to the outside. It has also transformed flows to the exterior – the starboard main deck walkway has been retained, while to port a staircase links the cockpit to the fly deck walkway that leads to main deck forward area.

“It took some time for our clients to give their whole-hearted approval to this concept. It’s not easy to explain on paper. The owner of SL90A no.1, already the owner of a traditional yacht, understood the great potential of this 27-metre model when he visited its sister, the SL96A”.

TheSL90A is intended as the entry level model for the asymmetric line. Given the task of developing the content and stylistic concepts of the asymmetric line in a smaller package we sought to create a harmonious relationship between the volumes, heights and lines while retaining the generous interior space that asymmetry provides.

The SL90A contains elements, stylistic traits, that formed part of the first Sanlorenzo builds. It’s an interesting aspect of the design, because brand identity is a crucial part of any design. The yacht targets a multicultural market, so the look must be clear and recognisable, enabling owners to identify with the DNA of his or her chosen brand. The decision to include an RPH (Raised Pilot House), which generates constraints in the relationship between the skyline and the height/

superstructure proportions, and between the bow and stern profiles and the hull height, made the project even more challenging. However, it also gave the yacht greater aesthetic appeal, because when a dimensional equilibrium has been found, it means that at this level, the design is complete. Asymmetry has also led to some very clear rules for managing spaces, optimising the interior space on the port side and freeign up interior functionality on the starboard side, because this is where we have sited the exterior fore-aft walkway.

Of all the yachts in the asymmetric line I think the SL90A is the most successful. When I first took on this project I assessed the problem and made sure that this challenge would create a real opportunity. My favourite area is the bows, where as well as a scenic sunpad there’s also a forward-facing sofa near the mooring area. As a romantic I love imagining displacement sailing at sunset and watching the horizon stretching away in front of me.

The aerial shot above highlights the open-air area. There are two exterior lounges forward, one on the flybridge (left) with sunpad integrated into the structure, and one on the main deck accessed directly from the owner’s suite. Top, the lifting deck is the water-level living area. When lowered it facilitates access to the sea and tender launch and recovery operations. The tender is stored in a garage aft

Sober and elegant, the profile displays exceptional balance between volumes, sleek lines, vertical elements height and empty and full spaces. The oneway windows of the owner’s suite. From the outside the technical glass reproduces the colours of the hull livery, creating an exceptionally clean look while allowing light to flood the interiors

Interior Design

Theopportunity to work on an all-round project where we handle interiors and exteriors is an added value, we can take a global approach to the task. As for the choice of decor, as the yacht is intended for a multicultural market we tried to define an image that is adaptable to a wide variety of tastes, a design that’s sophisticated but with no over-the-top elements. The on-board style is an attractive mix of classic and contemporary. We introduced the idea of balance into every aspect of the work. The materials choice is pretty straightforward, we worked on extremely limited contrasts, there’s no information overload in the presentation. The client also wanted the day area to feature a very special painting that stamps its authority on the entire interior while also giving it an identity the client can identify with. As we were given the opportunity to work on exteriors and interiors, the yacht’s layout became a crucial factor. Our intention for this model was to create the impression almost of an open-space design, where the need to prevent the movements of guest and crew from intersecting can still be controlled – when you increase the dimensions there’s a desire to separate the two flows completely. This allowed us to create an architecture that almost echoes the typical loft image. The main challenge presented by this project was the great spatial complexity we had to deal with. We approached this by creating an extremely structured space that operates on several levels, embodying a theme of dual heights. The owner’s cabin, for example, works on three levels – the cabin level, a lower one with the bathroom and a third, even lower level for the dressing room. This spatial sophistication created a series of complexities we had to manage, but in the end we created something that appears complex but in reality is extremely harmonious.

70

The unifying stylistic theme in the interiors is the use of Canaletto walnut for the structural furnishings, walls and floors. Some units (shown here, wall lockers) and walls feature irregular walnut laths and mirrors creating a random design with a pleasing impression of movement. To side, bottom, the striking full-height space created by the partly open raised pilot house. Above, the interior dining area

Revolutionary, smart, elegant, the SL90A is designed for owners with a heightened awareness of their relationship with the sea, seeking open, light-filled spaces where they can relax and feel at home amid the waves. It has an asymmetric layout that expands the main deck saloon and enables the presence of full-height side windows. On the port side these have a direct view over the sea. The large windows are a distinctive feature of the SL90A: from the exterior, on the port side they reproduce the colour of the hull livery, creating an intriguing continuity from the water line to the flying bridge. The distance from the sea on the SL90A is shorter, making the design complexity a unique opportunity. I’m very proud to have succeeded in revolutionising the conventional yacht layout, also below 30 metres in length, proposing an innovative solution that has successfully reinterpreted the concepts of functionality, comfort and beauty. My favourite areas on the yacht are the main deck saloon, which is without doubt a bright, pleasant space, and the large full-beam sunpad integrated into the superstructure. These areas link the flybridge and the bow area. We at Sanlorenzo believe strongly that introducing real innovations onto the market demands courage and daring. The concept of asymmetry derives from a desire to break free of the conventions of what has always been a rather static, traditionalist industry. We wanted to dare, to undermine preconceptions and we’ve shown that it’s possible to remain faithful to traditions and our DNA while breaking free of these restrictions. The asymmetrical layout of the yachts is proving to be a wonderful plus point, as it enabled us to reclaim ten square metres of indoor area, enhance communication with the exterior and maximise the relationship with the sea. This emphasises the connection between exterior and interior and has attracted great acclaim. The decision to develop asymmetry is something we’d like to apply in the future on smaller craft and yachts with upper decks on which we can apply it in reverse.

FULVIO DE SIMONI YACHT DESIGN

Fulvio De Simoni is an internationally-known yacht designer who has created over 3,500 yachts with Italian and international yards. Born in La Spezia in 1949, he is the proprietor of the Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design studio. His more recent projects include the Pershing GTX116, launched this year, the Rossinavi Sea Cat 40 and the Antonini Navi Island, now under construction

It’s always worth listening when the voice of experience speaks. Fulvio De Simoni is an institution in the yacht-building world, as he has designed over 3,500 yachts over the course of his forty-year career. Born in La Spezia, his first experience in the sector was in Milan, at the Alberto Mercati studio. He and Massimo Gregori then founded Yankee Delta in 1977. His career took a great leap forward in 1983 with the launch of Italprojects and his meeting with Tilli Antonelli, the founder of Pershing and Wider – De Simoni designed the first of the brand’s own models, and he still collaborates with Pershing and Wider (the Pershing GTX116 was launched recently – ed.). The yacht designer, who trained as an architect, has worked with a number of Italian and international yards like Antago, Mochi Craft, Giannetti, Raffaelli, Aicon and Evo Marine. “In 2015 I decided to create a new company together with my closest collaborators (Enrico Lotti and Cristiano Tonarelli - ed.) to communicate the brand’s values”, he says. The result was Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, based in the city of his birth. Subtle irony and understatement are two of De Simoni’s hallmarks – sure of his own ideas, he rejects any form of standardisation. “The last time I went to have a look at one of my competitor’s yachts was thirty years ago, because I think that my everyday experience is enough for me to understand where the world’s going, without looking at how my counterparts interpret it”, he says. “I prefer to invent one small thing every now and then rather than copying ten that are the product of others”. That’s why his

point of view is so original. “What I try to do is simplify yachts, I think designers are going slightly off-track at the moment. Every innovation that appears on a car or in any other sector soon turns up on a yacht. But you can’t transfer elements of life on land directly onto a yacht. Yachts are becoming more and more complex and expensive, and the shortage of manpower we’re experiencing today is resulting in longer lead times. I think this sector is becoming too involved and designers, too, are forced to adapt to the situation”. One of his latest projects for Rossinavi, the Sea Cat 40, currently under construction, is innovative and certainly complex. With a length of 42.75 metres, the catamaran is designed to sail round the world in a smart way – its electric propulsion is recharged by an extensive array of solar panels covering every possible surface and a smart AI system that optimises battery usage, making it

possible to cross the Atlantic in twenty days at 8 knots under electric power. “We wanted to give it the look of a spacecraft, with a reverse bow and undulating profile, but without these unusual shapes interfering with the boat’s essential feature - its ability to carry a huge quantity of batteries in the central section between the two hulls, an area that is generally not made use of”.

In 2021 De Simoni’s great yacht-building knowledge and Pininfarina’s exceptional design ability joined hands. Pininfarina is an illustrious historic name in the history of Italian design, and the collaboration

resulted in a first 56’ motor catamaran design. Construction of this model is due to commence in the very near future. They are now designing an Explorer yacht and the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 will host the unveiling of a larger catamaran, around 40 metres in length. “About twenty years ago Piero Ferrari, who I’d just made a yacht for, said he’d like to bring me into Pininfarina, which at the time was collaborating with Ferrari, because it would be interesting to do something together. Nothing concrete came of it at the time, but I regard this collaboration as a discussion that began many years ago and has come to fruition today”.

INSIGHT, LISTENING AND CREATIVITY

Lorenzo Berselli initiates the creative process by listening carefully to his client’s requirements. Founder of the Triestebased studio, counts periods spent in the prestigious studios of Alberto Mancini and Luca Dini in his resume. His ideas are always first expressed in freehand drawings, and this was also true for the latest of his creations, the Tuxedo 54

80
[ CREATIVE MINDS: AGON ]

Born and brought up in Bologna, Lorenzo Berselli, has designed many yachts for Overmarine Yachts, like the Mangusta Oceano 42 and 54 GranSport, and the S10 for Azimut. Opposite page, the sketches made for the Tuxedo 54

Left, the Tuxedo 54 under way, showing off its sculptural external lines. Opposite page, top, the aft section of the Tuxedo Yachting House’s entirely custom-built model, the location of the tender garage. In the cockpit, next to a dinette with table for ten guests, there is a sunpad area that can shaded by an electrically-operated bimini (visible in the photo below, right). Also visible, the forward sunpad area, which can be shaded with removable canopies

The client always comes first. Whether it’s a yard or an individual owner, it’s their requirements that Lorenzo Berselli carefully takes note of before setting out on the creative process that will transform this input into a design that reflects these specifications. Born and brought up in Bologna, he nurtured his passion for the sea during family holidays spent on board a yacht based in Trieste harbour. After studying design at the IED in Turin, in 2012 he began his first work experience at the Alberto Mancini studio when it was in Trieste. During this time Berselli lived on board the family yacht – what better way to immerse himself in the industry that was to become his profession? This internship eventually extended into a seven-year stay at the studio, a period that saw the development of projects like the Mangusta Oceano 42 and the 54 GranSport, both for the Overmarine yard, and the Azimut S10. He then moved on to the Luca Dini studio in Florence. This office also handles architectural design, enabling the young man to broaden his professional horizons. In 2021 he decided to open his own studio called Agon, a Greek word describing intellectual and creative competition. “Our vision involves approaching every project as if it’s a design challenge to create a better product for the owner, in line with his or her input and

the build limitations, while offering the public a product that satisfies us and represents us”, says Berselli. Trieste was once the location of choice. “I decided to open my studio because I wanted a new stimulus, a new source of satisfaction”. It was here that the Tuxedo 54 came into being, a soon-to-launched full custom yacht 16.70 metres in length. “We developed the project in 2022. Following the sale of the first unit it underwent a natural evolution, shaping it to fit the owner’s desires”, says Berselli. This sleek yacht “was originally entirely open with just a hard top. The client, though, wanted a cabin with dinette and enclosed helm station. Then he asked for greater contact with the exterior, and not just visual, so we added features like a double skylight and electrically-operated side windows”. The owner also asked for just two cabins (apart from the crew cabin), with the owner’s cabin forward and the guest cabin aft. As a result they’re both very spacious. This bespoke configuration is also made possible by the aluminium construction – unusual for a yacht of this size – and the philosophy of the Tuxedo Yachting House brand, founded in 2020 but able to draw on the experience of Aldo Ceccarelli, the father of the current owner, president of Confindustria Nautica for many years and yacht builder since 1963.

82

The yard can fulfil many of its clients requests, offering them megayacht-style comfort condensed into a much more compact package.

For Berselli the initial phase is always the work of human hands in a context of creative freedom, without thinking too much about proportions, drawing captivating lines like the profile of the Tuxedo 54, with almost sculptural sections that can be seen in the sketches of this model. These lines are almost immediately transformed into real proportions using 2D or 3D software, developing a general plan and culminating in a 3D version of the yacht, roughed out at first and then transformed into a definitive rendering. “I’m more focussed on exteriors, but on yachts of these dimensions the interiors and exteriors are closely linked, so these aspects of the project develop hand in hand”.

The interiors of the Tuxedo 54 are laid out in a rational plan, as the owner specified, with sand coloured oak floors and slightly darker wood on the walls. From left, anti-clockwise, the helm station with dinette on the main deck, the spacious owner’s cabin on the forward lower deck filled with natural light at the sides and through a skylight in the centre, the guest bathroom and lastly the guest cabin located aft

UTOPIAN REALITY

A project born of a vision – to give life to a timeless yet cutting edge hypercar. An oxymoron on four wheels created by Pagani, an artisanal manufacturer that transforms dreams into reality

[ T he CAR ] 86
Diego Tamone - ph. courtesy by Pagani

The Pagani Utopia is a hypercar that is rich in details like the butterfly doors and forged monoblock wheels with carbon fibre extractors

87

The mood board inspiring this creative idea featured a selection of images and colours strongly influenced by the 1950s and 60s. Brushstrokes of turquoise, burgundy, coral and ivory skilfully interspersed with design elements applied to vehicles dating from Dolce Vita era like the Vespa or the first Cinquecento. This exciting collage is completed, of course, by postcards of Italy, the Bel Paese, depicting for example, the beauty of the Tuscan landscape, the Cinque Terre and Venice. A distillation of essentiality and emotion, in fact. The new Utopia came into being like this, at Pagani Automobili, a small artisanal workshop based in the outskirts of Modena, producing no more than fifty cars a year. The brand has Italian creativity and flair in its DNA, complementing the stylistic influence its founder and current owner Horacio Pagani has on its four-wheeled creations. In 1983 Pagani decided to fulfil his desire to make his mark in Italy, leaving his native Argentina to make the opposite journey to that undertaken by thousands of Italian immigrants in the early 20th century. He set up his own sartorial factory in the region that in the 1960s

saw the beginning of the epic story involving the most famous international high performance supercar manufacturers, companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. It was a dream come true, and in the space of only twenty-five years, the appearance of models like the Zonda and Huayra has now been followed by the arrival of the Utopia. The name is the reflection of a project that from the very start seemed to many – but not Don Horatio – to be an unattainable dream. A light, simple hypercar that can provide sheer driving pleasure while remaining unconstrained by the requirements imposed on so many contemporary sports cars, vehicles bristling with over-the-top technology designed to cope with hybrid propulsion and a digital interface.

It took more than four thousand stylistic drawings to develop this dream, followed by two full-scale reproductions and eight prototypes – it eventually took six years to create timeless lines that dialogue with advanced aerodynamics where sleek, flowing shapes are interrupted by vital appendages designed to generate the required downforce and reduce drag. CANADIAN SPIRIT, EUROPEAN STYLE

Based on the over 100-seat twin-engine jetliner, now optimised for the corporate market in a version providing seating for up to nineteen passengers. The ACJ Two-Twenty needs a runway just 1,600 metres long and can fly for over twelve hours without stopping. The interiors offer breath-taking style and tempting opportunities for personalisation

95
courtesy by ACJ

Take an aircraft designed for regional transport with a payload of over one hundred passengers like the Airbus A-220 – originally the Bombardier CSeries – then task a team of engineers with transforming it into a business jet. The result is the Airbus ACJ Two-Twenty. The aircraft now features significant innovations and developments, so it is not simply a spinoff of its A220-100 predecessor – it has been deliberately created expressly fort business aviation, aiming to provide outstanding comfort in a cabin certified for 19 passengers, with six VIP areas in a space of 73 square metres.

One of the modifications setting it apart from the commercial version is a new, more powerful pressurisation system. At a typical cruising height of 41,000 feet this provides a cabin pressure equivalent to below 5,900 ft compared to over 6,500 ft in the airliner version. For even greater passenger comfort, the ACJ Two-Twenty can be equipped with a humidification system that takes relative humidity levels to over twenty per cent, resulting in a more pleasant interior environment. Lovers of fine food will be pleased to find that, unlike passengers on commercial flights, they will be able to enjoy aromas and flavours as intensely as they would on the ground. Airbus has also fitted out the aircraft with all the features present on a large jet like the A-350, with electro-chromatic windows and improved soundproofing, especially in the rest areas, with sound levels of less than 50dB at cruising speed. Of course, great attention has been

paid to connectivity – Ku band satellite connectivity is standard, although other systems based on different satellite systems will soon be available. The aircraft interiors are extremely spacious – the fuselage provides a usable space that is 23.8 metres long, 3.3 metres wide and 2.1 metres high, so the vast majority of passengers will be able to stand upright comfortably. The total interior area is 73 square metres. Operationally speaking, the standard features of the ACJ TwoTwenty version include a highest max take-off weight (MTOW) of 63.7 tonnes with the ability to operate within ETOPS 180 parameters (Extended Range Twin-engine Operation Standards), the aeronautical rules applying to long-range flights carried out by twin-engine aircraft above regions with only a small number of airfields suitable for emergency landings, like oceans or deserts. This means greater versatility and mission performance capability. Another important factor for business jets in this category is performance – while the original commercial model was powered by two 19 klb PW1519G engines, the ACJ TwoTwenty boasts a pair of 21 klb Pratt&Whitney PW1521G turbofan units. Airbus is maintaining its edge over competing models by researching the use of even more powerful engines like the 24 klb PW1524G. Of course, fuel carrying capability has been modified to provide the required range – the basic A220 airliner carries 21,805l of fuel, while the ACJ TwoTwenty is equipped with either four (as baseline) or five (if requested) additional fuel tanks to achieve that extra range of

Opening, the central fuselage section divided into a dual club-working space and lounge. Below, the aircraft at take-off

up to 5,650 nm, or over twelve hours. Like many other bizjets, in order to avoid having to rely on handling companies and to enable operations in remote, less well-equipped airfields, the ACJ Two-Twenty fits integrated airstairs located on the right-hand side of Door 1.

Maintenance costs are always a headache for operators, especially during down times as these become indirect costs to be added to those incurred by flight hours. This has led the company to develop a Low Utilization Program tailored for business aviation, moving from hours (airliner) to calendar based (corporate jet) tasks to improve availability and reduce costs without impacting safety.

As regards performance, the main difference between the ACJ220 and the A220-100 is range – thanks to additional fuel tanks the ACJ Two-Twenty can travel for up to 5,650 nm or 12 hours of non-stop flight, well above

the 3,450 nm range of the A220-100. In terms of distances, this means the aircraft can fly from London to Los Angeles or Tokyo without stopovers at a maximum operational speed of Mach 0.82, with the opportunity to reduce fuel burn by almost 25%. The minimum recommended runway length at maximum take-off weight is 5,470ft (1,670m), much shorter than for lighter ultra-long-range competitors.

The price? At the moment it’s impossible to find out, but the starting figure is not too distant from that of all the other corporate jets with ultra-longrange capabilities. To this can be added the price of any whim desired by the purchaser, including interior furnishings by one of the company’s favoured artists, guaranteed to make passengers’ jaws drop. What’s sure is that the psychological barrier of a hundred million dollars is bound to be reached. www.acj.airbus.com

The colourful interiors of the ACj-220 designed by French artist Cyril Kongo, “It’s definitely going out of my comfort zone,” said Kongo, showing the new design at a press event during the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

he 50-metre series is now the Tankoa’s flagship line. Genoa-based Tankoa describes itself as a “boutique yard” as it offers almost total personalisation, limited production runs, attention to quality and detail and the use of the most advanced technology. Presented at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, Kinda is the yard’s fourth 50-metre build – the fifth was launched this year and number six is currently under construction – and like her sister ships boasts, pure, decisive and dynamic lines. The yacht’s strong personality is reflected by the gently sloping lines of the bow section, descending to meet the high, vertical prow. The yachts in the series are based on the same naval platform, but they develop into unique objects that are shaped by the owner’s wishes. The exterior and interior design of the Kinda are by Francesco Paszkowski Design, with the collaboration of Margherita Casprini for the interior décor.

The owner specified a cutting-edge hybrid propulsion system. In contrast to the system installed on Bintador (the second in the 50-metre line, launched in 2019), the solution developed with MAN and Siemens for Kinda provides several power options, including full electric. Eight battery packs, for a total of 264 kWh, enable the yacht to sail at around four knots for two hours or around eight knots for one hour without switching on the diesel engine/ generator, eliminating noise, vibration and, above all, emissions. The yard takes pride in having been able to instal the system by reorganising the technical areas without sacrificing any of the spaces dedicated to the owner, guests or crew.

Kinda is laid out over three decks and a fly deck, all connected inside and out by light, airy staircases. Where possible the generous open-air spaces are surrounded by glass balustrades that lighten the aesthetics of the structure and enhance the yacht’s close relationship with the sea.

The heart of outdoor life is the upper deck with aft terrace and lounge with 5,000-litre infinity pool forward. The pool by Edilfare Piscine has transparent sides, and is the first to be installed on board a 50-metre Tankoa. It is surrounded by seats and loungers and shaded by moveable awnings. The spacious main deck cockpit, furnished with a series of large sofas, leads into the main saloon. The work of the Paszkowski/Casprini duo is immediately recognisable in the classic-contemporary interiors, designed to create refined, welcoming spaces. This stylistic choice continues coherently and rhythmically in the brushed oak floors, light painted ceilings and the extensive use of leather in colours ranging from dove grey to lighter grey with highlighted joins in the walls.

The sea’s presence fills the saloon through the large windows and lowered bulwarks, and is echoed by the soft, wavelike shapes and the furniture beneath the windows. The sofas, armchairs, poufs and coffee tables are all Italian made, selected from the Minotti collection, while the dining area seating is by Gallotti & Radice. In accordance with the owner’s wishes the layout of the forward section includes a VIP cabin and then the owner’s suite, a walk-through office area with desk looking out onto the sea. The owner asked for a small lounge and dressing table next to the sleeping area, with a bathroom forward with hammam integrated into the shower, and a walk-in wardrobe.

There are four more cabins amidships on the lower deck, with the crew quarters further forward. The beach club with fitness area lies aft of the engine room and side-opening garage.

Compared to the large main deck saloon the upper deck living area is more intimate, with smaller windows and a maxi TV screen with furnishings below it, once again inspired by the sea.

With a length of 49.90 metres, a 9.40 metre beam and gross tonnage under 500 GT, Kinda is powered by a cutting-edge propulsion system that also offers a full electric mode that enables the yacht to sail at 4 knots for two hours or around 8 knots for one hour in total silence. Exterior Design

Francesco Paszkowski

After Vertige, Bintador and Olokun, Kinda is the fourth 50-metre yacht designed by our studio for Tankoa. It almost goes without saying that the interiors are made to measure for the owner, but the exteriors, too, have been personalised while retaining the distinctive elements of the 50-metre yacht’s design, like the generous exterior spaces, the side gunwales with glass inserts on the main deck opening out stunning views from the living area, the vertical bow – a striking, contemporary element of the profile that increases the interior space - the large aft platform that extends the area of the beach club and the wide windows that provide continuity between interior and exterior. As with the first three examples of the line, Tankoa’s contribution to Kinda has been crucial, especially in the level of precision lavished on the details and the support provided in finding the best possible solution to the requests we

106

made to satisfy the owner’s demands, showing the degree of personalisation Tankoa offers.

The yacht is the result of teamwork between the yard, owner and our studio.

Transparency and lightness were the dominant elements in developing the exterior design project. We obtained them by for example, using glass for the perimeter of the fly and upper decks and by installing lightweight, airy staircases with floating steps fixed to central steel shafts that link the decks inside and out. The aft upper deck area with glass balustrade is one of my favourite on-board spaces – it generates a profound sense of peace and tranquillity – whether you’re sitting on the sofas or around the big exterior table, you’re in close contact with the sea. One of Kinda’s very special feature is the large forward eternity pool with transparent sides, a focus for open-air enjoyment.

107
The distinctive feature of Kinda’s exterior design is the high, vertical bow that also extends the interior space. Top, the aerial view shows all the open-air social areas on Kinda’s aft section. Interior Design Francesco Paszkowski Design in collaboration with Margherita Casprini

The layout was created to reflect the owner’s lifestyle, incorporating the solutions he himself was looking for, even if they lacked precision at first. For us it’s always important to find time during our first encounters with the owner to understand his habits and how he intends to use the yacht, maybe for holidays with family or friends, or for business purposes. His passions and hobbies are important – he may like listening to music, or want a screening room or special wine cellar, for example.

The Kinda’s owner wanted to be involved in the design stages, a process we enjoy because we can share our proposals as we progress, with each small step taking us closer to the final result. We conceived Kinda as a means of escaping, a way of communicating physical and mental well-being. It’s somewhere

that offers the right balance between intimate spaces for enjoying peaceful moments and spaces in contact with the water, the sea and the marine environment, essential sources of harmony. The upper-deck living area is a wonderful example, a discreet, welcoming space where the windows, although not as expansive as those on the main deck, and glass balustrade provide a breath-taking that invites the gaze to lose itself in the immensity of the sea all around.

For the interiors, created by our studio in collaboration with Margherita Casprini, we saw that the owner wanted to live on board in a refined, contemporary setting. The coherent style in all the spaces is based on a choice of natural materials, glossy and matt finishes and restrained, harmonious colours for the contrasting dark fabrics and upholstery.

Kinda is a spectacular yacht, and I say that with total confidence – its sales confirm the appeal of the Tankoa S501 platform. In this market sector it’s no small achievement to have sold five models and have a sixth under construction. I’m positive that the exterior lines and quality of our builds have become a benchmark for 50-metre yachts below 500 GT. Kinda is the owner’s first yacht. Its construction has been an enjoyable process, carried forward with the close collaboration of designers Paszkowski/Casprini, the owner’s family and the yard. The owner wanted a very elegant, sober interior design concept. As he’s also very aware of environmental issues, he specified a hybrid propulsion system, which in this case we developed alongside MAN and Siemens. The enabled us to provide high levels of comfort under way and when moored.

The main challenges we faced with this project involved integrating the new hybrid propulsion system with our standard model, especially integrating it into the available spaces without stealing volume from the guest and crew areas, only from the technical areas. Another daunting challenge was managing the lithium battery to enable us to match the safety standards of the model with traditional propulsion. The owner also asked for an eternity pool – it’s the first time we’ve installed one on board a 50-metre yacht, and it’s a very important plus point for a model that is already an iconic presence. What makes me proud of the S 501 platform in general is that this model continues to be a great source of satisfaction for us and enables us to consolidate our order book and Tankoa’s position as one of the main players in the international superyacht sector.

In the footsteps of Picasso, from France to Spain and New York on the occasion of the international celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of his death

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is the star of 2023. Events commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death are being held throughout the world in a marathon series of around fifty exhibitions exploring his works and artistic legacy. Picasso was born and brought up in Spain and spent much of his adult life in France, and these two countries lead the Celebration 1973-2023 parade with sixteen and twelve exhibitions respectively, involving the most important institutions in the places that played a significant role in his life, from Malaga, where he was born, and A Coruña, where he began to draw and paint, to Paris, the scene of his later artistic exploits. Some shows, like the one at The Beyeler Foundation, are already over, others are currently underway or are yet to open, with a grand finale set for autumn. The highlights include the largest French event at the Musée National Picasso-Paris, which boasts a collection of over 5,000 works and items from the artist’s personal archives. The museum has collaborated by making generous loans of art works to the celebrations, “Célébration Picasso, la Collection prend de couleurs”, until 27th August. The show is curated by Sir Paul Smith. The British designer, known for his work with colour, seeks to offer a less conventional point of view, one that is more visual and spontaneous, with the inclusion of contemporary artists like Guillermo Kuitca, Obi Okigbo, Mickalene Thomas and Chéri Samba, who show the same desire to open new perspectives on Picasso’s legacy. One of the many Spanish initiatives is “Picasso Sculptor. Materia y Cuerpo”, at the Picasso Museum in Malaga, until 10th September, dedicated to

the artist’s sculptural work. It provides an opportunity to see the permanent collection with works like the “Portrait of Lola”, Picasso’s sister, painted in A Coruña in 1894, and “Jacqueline Seated”, the first portrait of his second wife from 1954. Madrid offers a rich selection of opportunities. The Casa Encendida de Fundación Montemadrid is hosting “Picasso: Sin Título” (until 7th January, 2024), with fifty works from the artist’s late period (1963-1973). From 14th November to 4th March 2024 it’s the turn of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid with “Picasso 1906: La gran transformación”, dedicated to the period of the artist’s great conceptual, aesthetic and formal transformation and his shift from a classical approach to Cubism. In New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presents “Jeune Picasso à Paris”, and for the occasion the Peggy Guggenheim collection in Venice is displaying all the Picasso works in its collection. With “Picasso e l’Antico” (until 27th August) the National Archaeological Museum in Naples examines Picasso’s visit to the museum and Pompeii and how this visit influenced his creative development in terms of naturalism and three-dimensionality. the time have confirmed Picasso’success. The results of 2022 put him “only” in third place, behind Andy Warhol and Claude Monet, although his works still earned many millions. For example, “Femme nue couchée” (1932) sold for 67,541,000 dollars at Sotheby’s and “Femme assise près d’une fenȇtre (Marie-Thèrese)”, also from 1932, went under the hammer for 103,410,000 dollars at Christie’s. Picasso’s ceramics are also making a strong showing – for example, four rare plates from the “Visage Noir” series, bought by chance at Salvation Army sale. The value of the pieces was recognised and they were sold for almost 40 million dollars. museepicassoparis.fr celebrationpicasso.es guggenheim.org guggenheim-venice.it

CLASS, HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY

Currently under construction, the first in Picchiotti’s new 33-metre Gentleman’s Yacht line signals the brand’s relaunch with a series of timeless yachts created from a modern, technological perspective, using only hybrid or full electric propulsion

A rendering of the Gentleman’s Yacht 33 currently under construction at Picchiotti Yachts shipyard , displaying the striking mahogany and chromed steel finishes. It will be the first model in Picchiotti’s new range, with 24, 44 and 55-metre builds to follow

The Gentleman’s Yacht 33 by Picchiotti is currently under construction, with an eye to the American market. However, the yacht’s timeless appeal, expressed in a contemporary stylistic idiom, and its cutting-edge technical solutions mean it’s sure to cause a stir outside the States, too. The new range is launched with the Gentleman’s Yacht 33, but it will also include a 30, 44 and 55-metre model, plus the 24 “Open Air”. All this activity marks the relaunch of a brand whose origins go far back in time, as it has been a standard-bearer for Italian naval excellence since 1575. The design for the entire range is the result of a collaboration between Picchiotti and Luca Dini’s Design & Architecture, which handled exteriors and interiors, with the participation of Kurt Lehman and his Yacht Moments consultancy. In the words of Giovanni Costantino, founder and CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which acquired Picchiotti in 2021, “The American market is very receptive to this new Picchiotti fleet, which

is inspired by the post-war golden age of yachting and includes some aesthetic details drawn from American culture. One example is the glossy mahogany, a material that often appears in American homes and bars. It’s re-used in the Gentleman’s Yacht in contrast with the superstructure colours, with everything embellished by the chromed steel of various exterior details.

Luca Dini points out that the feel of the most illustrious yachts of the period is also recreated by “the side walkway on the main deck that enables you walk around the whole perimeter of the yacht”. Now a must-have, the beach club is a more modern feature, and is one the largest to be found on a yacht of this size. It opens directly onto the sun platform through large sliding windows. “Another refinement that deserves a special mention”, says Dini, “is the custom tender, a miniature version of the parent yacht, sporting the same lines and livery”.

The interior styling is contemporary – oak, which creates a link

with the exterior, is complemented by wickerwork and stone like amazonite, Calacatta Oro, Statuarietto and green, blue and yellow onyx. “Another recurring theme throughout”, says Dini, “is the white venetian blinds with matching stitching and the leather wall panelling with a three-dimensional pattern, in the main areas of the yacht like the owner’s cabin and the two saloons”. The Gentleman’s Yacht 33 –and the rest of the range – emphasise TISG Group’s green approach, focussing on materials use, recyling and reducing emissions. In this context the lines of the Gentleman’s Yachts will be optimised for hybrid or electric propulsion – the only options available, in fact. The hull and superstructure will be in aluminium, so no fibreglass, with mahogany and steel surfaces. “The entire yacht-building industry shares the objective of becoming greener. It’s a long road but I think

it’s the right one”, says Constantine. “Our commitment continues. The motoryacht Admiral Kensho, launched in 2022, is now a benchmark for sustainable yacht-building, thanks to its Lloyd’s Register ECO notation and a serial hybrid propulsion system that enables energy consumption to be optimised and emissions, vibration and acoustic pollution to be reduced. The latest new aspect of the Gentleman’s Yacht launch is TISG’s entry into series production. It’s a high-end series, though, intended for a limited clientele, with only ten or so deliveries per year. “In series production, what differentiates the Gentleman’s Yachts by Picchiotti from other Italian brands” says Costantino, “is extremely high standards of detail quality, both inside and out, and refined materials choices. Like all the others, this project aims for excellence”.

inding a point where beauty and informal socialising come together is one of Mario Luca Giusti’s long-standing aims. Born in Florence but Milanese by adoption, in the mid-noughties the entrepreneur and designer took a radical decision that turned out to be a successful move – he transformed the family footwear business into a company producing tableware using innovative high-tech materials. Its famous glasses are made of Synthetic Crystal and the plates are in melamine.

The glasses, as beautiful and sparkling as crystal, and plates by Mario Luca Giusti combine refined, luxurious aesthetics with a more casual use and a colour palette that lights up the surroundings in settings and situations where sitting at table can be experienced in a more relaxed way - in the open air or on board a yacht, for example.

Three new arrivals have been introduced in 2023, starting with Villa Fasola, a line dedicated entirely to the tea drinking ritual with the Florentine brand’s first cup collection. Mario Luca Giusti breathes new life into the traditions surrounding this special, timeless moment through the use of unexpected materials like melamine, which replicates the look of porcelain but offers much greater practicality.

DESIGNING WITH RENZO PIANO

Just under 100 individuals work together each day in RPBW’s Genoa and Paris offices to make their own contribution to what has been dubbed a multifaceted ‘horizontal design process’. RPBW associate architect Francesco Giacobello tells us what it means to work alongside one of the world’s most famous architects

At the world-renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop, everyone works together on every project. The idea of “horizontal design” reigns supreme – the creative phase is essentially a kind of round table involving a number of individuals, from Renzo Piano himself to students that have only recently joined the studio.

“Renzo Piano always says ‘You never know where the best ideas might come from’”, says Francesco Giacobello, an

associate architect at RPBW. No two creative journeys are ever the same for the studio. “It’s all about a type of creative freedom that’s inextricably linked to function and focuses on the impact the design will have on the city. We begin by studying the location from a geographical and sociological point of view. We get right into the heart of the place, we walk around, we reflect on what could happen once we begin: projects are like drops added to a pre-existing urban

Life at RPBW is dynamic, a hyper-participatory process in which colleagues work as equal partners and the scope of action is not rigidly pre-defined. The work of the Renzo Piano Foundation is a crucial factor – it also owes its valuable existence to a desire to create a “living archive”, a place where the work done is like a seed that ultimately produces new shoots.

To RPBW, the architect of today is a hybrid figure, never too wrapped up in the role of rigorous designer – in fact, Giacobello says that one of Renzo Piano’s favourite sayings is “Guys, stop acting like architects”, an invitation to shift perspective and avoid focusing too much attention to formalism. The architects of tomorrow are the ones building up experience right now in Italy and abroad. “For us, every project is the

beginning of a new adventure. ‘Starting out and then returning’ as Piano often says to us”. This subtle core belief reverberates like a soul through all the studio’s creations. Everyone that steps across their thresholds has the feeling of being enfolded in the same human “embrace”. From Piano’s most famous museums to less illustrious local buildings, there’s a definite feeling that the design is about much more than lines on paper – a clear impression of a profound bond with the local area. As Giacobello puts it: “Piano has passed down the idea that if you want to understand a building, you shouldn’t look at it from outside – you have to look at it through the eyes of the people observing it”. This creates a platonic bond between designer and user. “The building speaks about itself through its physical impact on its environment. We try to make the

ground floor permeable so it becomes part of the city without creating barriers. The building’s ability to put down roots depends not on its opulence but its ability to come to life. We like it when a building bypasses its function and becomes a place to visit”. Another crucial element is the shell, which wraps around the structure like a skin. RPBW maintains that the best solution isn’t always completely smooth and seamless, but an open surface that reveals something of what lies behind it. A way of allowing buildings to breathe.

One of the most recent projects Francesco Giacobello worked on was the Waterfront di Levante, Genoa (set for completion in 2025), on which he was associate in charge of a part of the project. This marked a return to his first love, water. Ligurian by birth and Genoese by adoption, Giacobello grew up with sea views and can’t imagine life without that kind of horizon. “Yachts are a familiar image for me and contact with the water is vital. That’s what I’d work

on if I had to design a vessel, while being aware that the dynamics involved are different to designing a building. I’m intrigued by the approach to details, to the idea of ‘bespoke’. Buildings are fixed, immovable, but yachts are the exact opposite!”

Piano’s sailing experience is well-documented and it was something he was able to draw on in terms of trying out materials, design dynamics and the ingenious ways that space can be used aboard: “I’ve loved the sea and sailing since my early childhood”, he said in an interview. “When I was eight years old, I built a boat in our garage, with my own hands. I was sure I’d measured everything properly, but then we then had to take off the garage door to get it outside. My father was furious”. Things turned out much better in 1998 when Piano and the Vismara studio worked together to craft the 60’ sailing yacht, Kirribilli Piano, finally giving shape to what had become a private passion.

THE SHAPE OF WATER

New horizons and prestigious collaborations, now in yacht-building, too, mark the journey of Edilfare Piscine, a multi-award winning Italian company that has become a benchmark in the world of design-rich swimming pools

After celebrating its landmark twenty-fifth anniversary, Edilfare Piscine has become the benchmark company in the planning and construction of swimming pools with a high design content. This gratifying achievement has been highlighted by the award of the Pool’s Specialist prize, an industry accolade based on criteria such as designs, innovative drive, corporate organisation and turnover. Edilfare was selected to receive this recognition for the seventh year running from among hundreds of Italian companies in the field. It’s been an exciting journey for Fabio Signorelli, the founder and owner of the Bergamo-based company. He’s had a special

affinity for water since he was a young boy, exploring ways of including it in architectural structures to make them more beautiful and enhance the feeling of well-being they generate. “I’ve always regarded swimming pools as features that can intensify the perception of beauty created by a building and instil serenity in the people who use them or simply look at them. When water is introduced into pools with precise construction characteristics you enter into an even more direct relationship with the user, maximising the beneficial, pacifying effect a pool can exert. Today the company is one of the few of its kind that can follow every stage of a project, from consultancy to

design, development, restructuring and post-sales maintenance services. Signorelli has also created the exclusive figure of pool consultant, a qualified expert with a thorough knowledge of all design and construction aspects. “I handle this role personally on an international level, so I can provide specialist support alongside the architect and works manager to customise the project in line with client specifications from both an aesthetic and functionalsystems point of view”.

Edilfare Piscine creates minimal, linear designs but then gives itself free rein with functional features that provide high levels of comfort for those choosing to immerse themselves in the water,

Above, Fabio Signorelli, founder of Edilfare Piscine. One of the services offered by company is the technical support provided by the Pool Consultant, a person with technical expertise who can customise the pool in line with client requests while respecting the requirements of efficient functioning, purification, lighting, cover and heating. Another widelyappreciated plus is the water treatment process, which does not involve the use of chemical agents but is based on ozone and UV light

which can run, overflow and create settings that are closely linked to the natural surroundings. “From the point of view of aesthetics, for several years now demand has focussed on dark, extremely clean interior surfaces. Plays of water are a must and the benefit we offer is water treatment. We’re one of the few companies to do this in a totally natural way, with technology that makes use of ozone and UV light. We also use mineral salts, especially magnesium and potassium, that recreate the habitat found at hot spas. We make the water pure and neutral without the use of chemical agents”. Signorelli says that this green awareness is much appreciated by his clients. www.edilfare.it

An on-board lift is now a must-have luxury. Bertazzoni Lift Marine and ICM LIFT Marine are an established team that constantly take on new technology and design challenges, providing unique, versatile solutions, developed and built entirely in-house

Watching the F1 Grand prix in Monaco with that parade of yachts moored close by and realising that many of them are fitted with at least one of our lifts and dumb waiters gives us great satisfaction”, says Massimo Bezzi, CEO of ICM LIFT Marine. “We’ve worked on over 200 yachts now”, says Gianluca Bertazzoni, CEO of Bertazzoni Lift Marine. “This year alone we’ve seen the launch or delivery of 15 yachts, all from the most important yards, from Benetti, our long-standing client, to Sanlorenzo, Baglietto, Ferretti Group, Rossinavi, Codecasa and The Italian Sea Group. They are the results that prove the popularity of the solutions we’re able to offer”.

Bertazzoni and ICM have created a successful team in an exclusive market niche – they design, build and install lift systems on yachts and superyachts. Systems, mostly custom, that have now become a distillation of design and technology and are often one of the model’s on-board wow factors. Customisability, flexibility and research and development form the basis of the offer they provide for owners, designers and yards. Every commission has something unique that imposes new technical solutions rather than special processes for

There are no limits to the lift types designed and constructed by ICM Lift Marine and Bertazzoni Lift Marine, be they square, round, built to fit aespecially narrow shafts, even around 1x1 metre as in the photo to side, or large lifts with a considerable scenic impact. Bottom, Massimo Bezzi

surfaces or significant changes during the build. “We recently concluded an agreement for an innovative pop-up lift. The owner wants the cabin to emerge out onto the fly deck, eliminating the structure normally required to give it stability. It’s a challenge – we have to design a new system from scratch, with new support and anchoring mechanisms that are compatible with this reduced space”, says Bezzi. The creation of a lift for the Kenshō, the magnificent 75-metre craft by Tecnomar that was named Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards 2023 was also a complex project. The work involved 22 design revisions, twelve months of design and some obsessive attention to detail. Made in aged bronze with laminated glass panels and a delicate fabric interior it resembles, as was the intention of interior designer Jouin Manku, a fascinating lantern moving between the decks. “Our strength, what makes us stand out in the market, is that we always manage to find solutions that reflect the owners’ wishes, solutions that you won’t find elsewhere”, says Bertazzoni.

A source of pride for both is the work carried out for Ice, a 90-metre yacht by Lürssen launched in 2005, originally without a lift but featuring an

unusually-shaped stair well, rounded at the back and flat in front. Last year the owner decided to have a lift installed. “Many found it an impossible task, but we succeeded”, says Bezzi. “We had to design the lift to fit the shape of the stair well”. Another complex task was marrying the loads and anchor points to an already-existing structure and staircase. The final result is a spectacular, perfectly integrated steel and glass lift. Building lifts on board yachts is a complex process, with installation taking around five times as long as it would in a building. Bertazzoni and ICM produce everything in-house, and when the job is complete they handle training of the yacht engineers. Service, however, is the domain of Vertec Marine, a brand founded by Bertazzoni and ICM. It’s available 24/7, provided by a network of technicians operating from strategic yachting hubs and capable of intervening in a few hours anywhere in the world to repair and maintain on-board lifts. “We offer more than an all-round service. We design, build, instal and maintain...and if required we’ll even dismantle the lift!” It may sound like a joke, but in fact it’s not unusual for the company to be called upon to make radical changes to the lift technology and design. www.icmlift.com www.bertazzoniascensori.com

Having already set a standard for the construction of large luxury catamarans, Sunreef Yachts is now leading the charge of the green revolution in yachting. The first Sunreef 80 Eco showcases how the latest sustainable technologies can also enhance onboard comfort. Thanks to a revolutionary solar power system, hydro generation and performance sails, the catamaran offers full autonomy by relying on the sun, water, and wind

149

ustainable cruising is increasingly high up on the agenda for yacht owners, with builders finding innovative ways to change the way in which their clients can enjoy the ocean.

The all-electric Sunreef 80 Eco is the perfect example – it’s a fully autonomous craft that utilises revolutionary green technology for fuel-free cruising in total silence and luxury. Designed to navigate in complete harmony with the elements, this pioneering model is a breakthrough for both Sunreef Yachts and the concept of responsible yachting. The Sunreef 80 Eco is very much an evolution of the Sunreef 60 Eco, but takes sustainable technologies to the next level with renewable energy a key element of the design. Unique in the yachting industry, MarieJoseph’s solar power system features ultralight composite-integrated solar panels within the hull sides, mast, superstructure and bimini roof. This patented system was entirely engineered and produced in house by Sunreef and offers optimal efficiency. Covering a total area of 164m², the solar panels on board can generate up to 45,5kWp.

For generating energy under sail, the sail wardrobe on board includes a main sail, genoa, gennaker and staysail with performances of about five knots in light airs and more than double that in anything over 15 knots of breeze. While under sail, the Sunreef 80 Eco recovers energy from the passive motion of the two propellers thanks to an advanced hydrogeneration system. The system can generate more than 15kW while sailing above seven knots.

Below the main deck, the catamaran’s smart energy management system along with custom-engineered batteries ensures optimal energy efficiency. This enables all energy obtained via the solar power and hydro-generation

system to be stored and reused to power both the electric propulsion and house appliances. All this technology combines to create a yacht that can cruise almost indefinitely on renewable energy from sun, water, and wind. While these are impressive green credentials, Marie-Joseph also astounds in terms of onboard comfort. Catamarans are known for being spacious, and the Sunreef 80 Eco does not disappoint in this regard, with plentiful areas for relaxing and entertaining. The vast main deck saloon offers lots of lounging and dining space with two oversized settees, a convertible table amidships, and a bar area forward. The space is accentuated further by wrap-around, panoramic windows. Portside off the main deck, the yacht’s high-end galley is fully equipped with restaurant quality amenities.

On the exterior, the catamaran’s flybridge boasts impressive lounging areas, big sun pads and a wet bar. Inside the aft cockpit, guests can enjoy a full-beam relaxation space with a large daybed, dining table and swim platform. The foredeck is particularly special, with traditional trampolines separating the two hulls and a sunken deck with large sun pads and a Japanese-style tatami table. With luxurious accommodation for eight guests, the catamaran’s starboard hull houses an opulent and light-filled master suite. The generous ensuite bathroom follows the contemporary style of the master stateroom. The custom layout also includes a large VIP cabin in the middle section of the portside hull as well as two identical guest cabins in the bow portion of each hull.

While many shipyards purport to be building sustainable yachts, many can be guilty of ‘greenwashing’. With the Sunreef 80 Eco, Sunreef Yachts is truly paving the way towards zero-emission yachting.

Exterior Design

Nicolas Lapp CTO & Co-Founder Sunreef Yachts

Space is one of the key characteristics of a catamaran configuration, and the exterior space is optimised to its fullest potential on board the Sunreef 80 Eco. Spanning almost across the entire beam, and with large panoramic views, the main saloon opens wide onto the fullbeam aft cockpit and its large hydraulic platform. All of this creates a very versatile setup for dining, parties, and water sports. The bow terrace is also a full-beam relaxation area. It stands out with two large trampolines and a sunken lounging corner that is well protected from the sun and the wind. Up on the flybridge, guests can enjoy dining with ocean views or basking in the sun on the large sun pads. One of the striking features of the exterior design is the full integration of solar panels into the composite bodywork. Thanks to Sunreef’s inhouse technology, the solar cells cover the hulls, the mast, the bimini roof, and the superstructure. This is something quite unique and, at the same time, very important. While most solar panelled yachts these days will use heavy and rigid glass-based solar panels, we searched for a solution that would not only make photovoltaic technology super-efficient, but also visually appealing. We want to prove a point: a sustainable yacht does not have to compromise on refined aesthetics. The idea of this ‘solar skin’ started with the mast. We wanted to integrate solar panels throughout the mast, but the concept quicky turned into something much more ambitious: full integration with all the curved composite elements of the bodywork. While designing this solution, we had to make sure that the panels are well protected. As a result, the system is as solid as the composite itself, resistant to shock and abrasion. In case of any damage, it is possible to remove and replace a given section of the system. Furthermore, whenever one of the panels fails, the other ones keep working thanks to a bypass system. Overall, the panelling contributes to the aesthetic of the yacht, giving her a futuristic look.

Interior Design

Nicolas Lapp, CTO & Co-Founder Sunreef Yachts

The interiors onboard Marie-Joseph have been designed to be open, universal, and relaxing. This has been achieved through a good consideration and understanding of the layout, but also through the colour palette which is characterised by dark colours. After a long day in the sun, guests can soothe their senses in a cosy environment where grey, beige, and black tones are dominant. Natural finishing materials and wide-open spaces filled with light and symmetry are the key features of the interior design. The main deck is a perfect example of this approach. Amidships, there is a height-adjustable and modular table

and, to port and starboard, there are two identical oversized lounging sofas. The vast sliding door opens fully onto the aft, so the saloon in semi-open and full of sunlight. The Sunreef 80 Eco boasts many alfresco and interior lounging and dining options. At the same time, the yacht offers a lot of flexibility – namely thanks to freestanding furniture. Many spaces can be transformed and adapted to various opportunities: cocktails, yoga sessions, conferences, or movie nights. This yacht is meant to be a private retreat when needed, but on many occasions, she turns into the perfect platform for socialising.

The Shipyard

Francis Lapp, Founder and President, Sunreef Yachts

The Sunreef 80 Eco represents a new philosophy of boating. This yacht proves that boating and sustainability go together and that, if you manage your energy consumptions properly and use the right green technology, you can cruise emissions free.

All the technology we used on the Sunreef 80 Eco increases comfort on board. With electric engines, you enjoy the most silent motoring experience. On top of that, these engines require a minimum of maintenance. The yacht features hydro generators, which means that she uses the motion of her propellers while under sail to generate green energy, again in silence. The air conditioning on board is not only energy saving but maintains the perfect level of humidity. We have a smart water management system with water-saving taps, with still and sparkling water. We are already working on new solutions for even more harmony of sustainability and comfort.

For the future, Sunreef is committed to keeping up with the rapidly developing world of eco technology. One way to keep up with the rising demand for eco yachts is expanding our manufacturing capacity. This is why we are developing an entirely new facility in the United Arab Emirates, which should be operational soon. Staying ahead of the game in green technology requires a lot of research and development. We are constantly in search of creative solutions to make yachting smarter and more energy efficient.

In fact, Sunreef recently announced an order for a hydrogen yacht, which surely is an exciting project. The owner of the yacht wanted an autonomous craft that will not use any fuel. The idea is to be able to cruise long distances and just rely on clean energy, even when there is not enough sunlight to generate solar power. The energy mix of this yacht is, therefore, tailored for long-range cruising. We feel the company must keep investing effort and talent into many different technologies to push innovation forward, and the hydrogen Sunreef 80 will be a wonderful opportunity to do so.

THE MARINE WORLD BECOMES A WORK OF ART

Colours and textures inspired by sand, sky, sea and marine life in the new Ocean collection by the Luxury Carpet Studio. For creating a distinctive look in yacht interiors and providing a sensory appeal

Iridescence, beaches washed by cool sea foam, shells, sinuous jellyfish and the colours of light enrich the new Ocean collection by Luxury Carpet Studio, the world leader in the artisanal production of bespoke carpets with Italian design. Elisabetta Santoro, designer and creator of the Earth, Kyoto, Marrakech and Colorful collections, has given evocative images of the marine habitat a stylistic and aesthetic reinterpretation, preparing their metamorphosis into soft carpets. In the yacht-building world, hand-made rugs and carpets provide guests with a soft yet durable surface on which they can walk around barefoot. The materials are all superb quality – silk, a virgin wool and silk blend, merino wool, bamboo and new-generation recycled yarns with a low environmental impact. ECONYL®, an innovative ecological synthetic yarn, is based on the re-use of discarded fishing nets and plastic waste. The creations by Luxury Carpet Studio, available in wall-to-wall or freestanding versions, are designed for yacht interiors – yachts have now become luxury floating residences, showcases for the latest, most sophisticated and elegant furnishing trends. In this setting the Ocean Collection is not only a furnishing component, it’s also a decorative element, available in a variety of models - Sea is a descriptive interpretation of a wave-washed beach, evoking the experience of walking along the shore, the Waves and Atollo models recall dunes and surf with three-dimensional effects, accentuated by gradually fading colours and an embossing technique where special artisanal skills create surfaces in relief. The models share the same colours and materials. The extensive colour range also presented a technical challenge and required tests on over 200 colours. The desired result was eventually achieved after a long sampling process – a sensory experience evoking the marine environment. www.luxurycarpet.it

A STYLISH , EMBRACING EXPERIENCE

PLH, a company operating in design and installation, is known for “making the difference”. Its electrical switch plates are highly ergonomic design objects in a sector where until now aesthetics had taken second place to functionality

162 [ BESPOKE /

SWITCH PLATES

Especially in luxury settings, whether residences, hotels or yachts, design and beauty are fundamental elements given the same importance as functionality and technology. But switch plates by PLH don’t stop at aesthetics and functionality – the fertile, exuberant mind of company owner Enrico Corelli drives him to seek out new ground, and at the last Salone del Mobile the company presented PHL Belcanto, a sound system that integrates with switches and sockets. As Enrico Corelli says, “Recently I’ve begun to want to “play” with hearing, creating a relationship between light and music, linking the physical interaction with the switch plate with the emission of a sound, of one or more melodies. Not a control that activates a transmitter remotely, but a plate that also generates sound, that itself makes a sound, perhaps expressing the user’s musical desires”.

In the early 2020s he had the idea of associating the Neo plate with a loudspeaker, amplifier and subwoofer, choosing as partner Outline, a company specialising in creating professional audio systems and digital

solutions for sound processing, especially for big events. After intensive research aimed at miniaturising the components to fit them inside a volume of 8x8x8 cm, providing high quality sound without disturbing anyone in a neighbouring space, the company can offer two solutions featuring the Mono, MakeUp, Skin and Keyboard lines, which communicate with the acoustic product through an OEM-type system (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and a speaker protected by a small coloured grille and integrated with a subwoofer and amplifier. The other solution comes in the form of a kit based on the Mono design, with an amplifier with controls and an induction charging system, two loudspeakers or rather two mid-tweeters with stand and with an Outline subwoofer, which has a strong aesthetic impact and features a contoured handle for transport. The two solutions, entirely personalisable, are intended to provide a stylish, embracing sensory experience for a wide range of sectors –private, contract, hotels and yachts.

CULTURAL FUSION

The VanDutch model launched by Cantiere Del Pardo results in a boat capable of combining exclusivity with quality construction. Merging Dutch roots with Italian innovation, the VD56 is the synthesis of performance, design, and comfort

[ MUST- HAVES ] 164

The bevelled and sinuous shapes of the VD56 is the embodiment of Italian style and elegance. A unique luxury powerboat distinguished by streamlined water lines and a high-impact exterior layout, it has been conceived to allow owners to live every moment in open air in complete autonomy, or share the pleasure of life on the water in the company of many family and friends

The VD56 is the new VanDutch model fully designed and produced under the stewardship of Cantiere Del Pardo, which bought the Dutch brand in 2020 and moved production to its existing facility in Forlì, Italy. With the elegant and timeless hull lines designed by Mulder Design, the VD56 preserves the soul of VanDutch and all the glamour and exclusivity associated with it. A distinctive evolution of the VD56, however, is the embodiment of Italian style and elegance. Those lucky enough to board the VD56 will discover a true escape from the real world. With expansive exterior deck areas, guests will be seduced by the charm of the sea. The backrests of the large aft sundeck are wide and adjustable to relax even during the fastest cruises. The comfortable L-shaped sofas located in the large cockpit, completed by a central table, offer a comfortable space for breakfast, lunch, appetizers, and dinners on board. The stern platform, which can be lowered to allow safe access to the water, creates a functional terrace at the water’s edge. The bar area in the cockpit means the VD56 can quickly transform into a

rooftop lounge bar where the skyline is made only of waves and sun on the horizon. The main principle behind this deck layout is to allow owners to enjoy the pleasure of life at sea surrounded by family and friends.

For Cantiere Del Pardo, innovation means responding to the evolution of the market and always offering the best solutions for VanDutch owners. One major innovation featured on the new VD56 is the introduction of a Volvo IPS engine to a VanDutch model for the first time. Envisioning the VD56 as an owner-driven yacht, the IPS offers ease of use and smoother boat handling. But the benefits don’t stop here: this engine also allows for improved performance while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This compact engine configuration also leaves plenty of space on the lower deck for a flexible interior layout, with two available options to meet different owner requirements. The ‘lounge’ layout is design for those who will use the VD56 primarily for day cruising, encompassing a large open space below deck with a U-shaped sofa and a central table in the bow. FROM POWER TO SUPERPOWER

The new IPS 40s hail Volvo Penta’s entry into the 35-metreplus superyacht segment. A pioneering dual power input concept and the flexibility to embrace sustainable new power sources make these advanced pods very attractive indeed

Page opposite, right, the hybrid version of the IPS 40: the pod is powered by both a conventional engine and an electric motor ph. Giovanni Malgarini

Volvo Penta unveils new IPS 40 system. A revolution that has opened up the 35 to 55-plus metre displacement, semi-displacement and planing superyacht sector to the Swedish manufacturer. Already honed and tested on a fast ferry in Sweden, it will come to market in 2025.

“Volvo Penta adopted a very specific strategy of starting small, honing its offering and then moving on to launching on larger craft,” explains Nicola Pomi, Global Yacht and Superyacht Director Volvo Penta – “We’ve been thinking big since we presented the smaller IPS in 2005. In 2010, we started installing our engines in multiples on larger craft and now we’ve come to the next step – superyachts. We needed a more powerful drive, hence the development of the IPS 40s. And we won’t be stopping there as because it’s a pod set up for the electric, is it very versatile and suitable for even larger applications”.

The Volvo Penta engineers’ pioneering dual power input concept, which pairs two power sources to each individual pod was also pivotal as it doubles the power output.

The IPS 40s, available from 2025, will comprise twin 1,000 hp D13s each that translates into a maximum power output of 8,000 hp in the case of a quad set-up.

“We are the leaders in manufacturing and selling sustainable systems,” says Pomi. “So instead of thinking about increasing the physical size of the engines, we focused on making the power modular. Having two engines that can power the same pod guarantees better flexibility and efficiency. Plus one or two engines can be used depending on the use profile at any particular time. Our aim is to be efficient where and when required”. In a second step, a mix of power units that use different energy sources will be able to be combined with the new pods from 2026.

171

“We are seeing a bit of a race to electric power at the moment but there are different solutions out there. Volvo Penta is preparing for all possible scenarios. The platform is set up for a mix of power sources, from engines that use renewable fuels to all-electric or hybrid solutions”.

The IPS 40s mark Volvo Penta entry into a segment dominated by wellestablished competitors. However, it is bringing an innovative product to the mix that Nicola Pomi doesn’t hesitate to call a game changer: “There is no pod solution like ours that’s integrated from helm to propeller for 35-55-metre craft. If we add in the Humphree stabilisers, the integration we can offer broadens still further. Because our systems are so innovative, efficient and sustainable, we’re not just entering the segment, we coming in to change it”.

The Volvo Penta pod system’s debut in the superyacht world brings with it all the advantages that have earned it its impressive reputation: exceptional manoeuvrability, improved comfort underway, less noise and vibration, lower fuel consumption. The system’s compact size and aft location open up new design scenarios too as more space is suddenly

The IPS 40s are all part and parcel of the growth and development strategy Volvo Penta has been pursuing since the early 2000s. The IPS 30s were the first to be installed on superyachts: clockwise, from top, the Mangusta GranSport 33, the wallywhy200, the Amer 120, the Sanlorenzo SX112 and the Azimut S8

available for guests and crew.

The advantages for yards are many and varied: installing an integrated Volvo Penta system means that you only deal with one supplier for the entire driveline. The system also arrives ready-assembled. Pomi adds: “We guarantee serious technical support starting with the definition of the waterlines to optimise our system’s efficiency and the integration of all the systems in the engine room”.

Seamless aftermarket is an other major plus with this system: all of the IPS 40 are available in the Volvo Penta catalogue, so if the propeller breaks down, you’ll have a new one at your yacht in the space of a few hours no matter where you are in the world. The assistance service for superyachts is becoming increasingly tailored too and is delivered by either technicians from Volvo Penta or specialist distributors flanked by a team of Volvo Penta engineers located in the areas of the world most superyacht tend to congregate during the different seasons. Because boats that special have very special requirements.

A detailed sketch of the Giardino Marino Grande by Bulgari designer Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani. Opposite page, the final result

M editerranean t reasure

A colourful undersea world of gold high jewellery pieces by Bulgari studded with 4,800 glittering gemstones. Designed to wear on the wrist, but also to show the time with a montre à secret hidden behind a small fish

Like the undersea world it’s a constant source of wonders. Our eyes are enraptured, scanning every square centimetre of its surface intensely, constantly seeking new surprises, full of amazement and admiration. We are enchanted by its colours, its elaborate shapes, even its sinuous, unexpected movements. Then it surprises with its startling ability to disassemble itself, in a shape shifting process where functionality, too, is transformed. Bulgari conceived this piece in Neuchâtel, the base for the Roman brand’s global operations with a manufacturing facility for the design and production of high-profile timepieces. Over the past few years the brand has created some extraordinary mechanisms in terms of technology and miniaturisation – always with an Italian feel, in an opulent evocation of Mediterranean sensibility. The House clearly draws aesthetic and creative inspiration from its Italian roots, and from the individual who has long overseen

its watchmaking and jewellery design - Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani. The eclectic Neapolitan designer influences any object that bears the brand’s name against the background of a pair of watch hands. In his role as Bulgari Watches Executive Product Creation Director he has given free rein to his imagination and memories, drawing inspiration from the sea surrounding his native land to create an entire themed collection of unique pieces, where the watches are transformed into jewels and jewels are transformed into watches, all bearing an iconic and evocative name - Mediterranea. A selection of magnificent pieces of extremely high-quality execution, where Italian exuberance harmonises with the most rigorous Swiss watch movement know-how. It is an unusual combination, but the complementary elements ensure its success.

The most stunning piece in this celebration of marine life is Giardino

Marino Grande, a dazzling stylistic exercise that takes as its subject the undersea world of the Mediterranean with a rich, colourful representation of what lies concealed beneath the water’s surface. The talent and creative flair behind the creation of these pieces belongs to Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, but over 3,900 hours of manual work was required to make them, with artisanal skills applied to the goldsmithing, setting, and assembly of the watch components – because although it may not seem so at first sight, Giardino Marino Grande is a watch. To be precise, it’s a montre à secret, a timepiece designed to conceal its primary function behind its appearance as a piece of

A LEGEND IN THE JEWELLERY INDUSTRY

From a stationery and fancy goods store to a world-renowned brand with a global presence of over 300 stores, Tiffany & Co. has achieved unparalleled recognition and popularity

[ JEWELS ]
180

Tiffany & Co. has just reopened the doors of its flagship store on Fifth Avenue, founded in 1940 and known as “The Landmark,” after a complete renovation.

More than just a jewellery store, it is also a cultural centre. Its ten floors host nearly 40 works of art, including pieces by artists such as Damien Hirst, Julian Schnabel, Rashid Johnson, Anna Weyant and Daniel Arsham. Above, some historical images. Below, the NY store today

In In the 1830s, New York City represented a land of opportunity for anyone with a few dollars in their pocket and an entrepreneurial drive. In 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany, only 25 years old at the time, and John B. Young opened a stationery and fancy goods store at 259 Broadway. Women - not only from New York - soon discovered an emerging American style at Tiffany & Co, one distinct from the European design trends rooted in the hidebound ceremony and Mannerist opulence of the Victorian era.

In 1845, Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Book became America’s first mail-order catalogue and before long it gained great popularity, becoming a showcase for the brand’s high-end jewellery.

The accolades soon began to arrive, starting in 1867 at the Universal Exposition in Paris, where, for the first time, an American design company was honoured with a bronze medal for silverware. Tiffany stood out from its domestic counterparts by being the first to use the British silver standard (92% purity) and establishing the first American design school. By 1870 it was already recognized as the leading American jewellery company, expanding its global influence with flagship stores in London and Paris.

In 1878 Charles Tiffany acquired one of the largest and most valuable yellow diamonds from the Kimberley mines, named the Tiffany Diamond. It was cut from 287 carats to 128 carats, creating 82 facets and becoming a superb example of Tiffany’s jewellerymaking expertise. In 1886 the house introduced the engagement ring as we know it today, with the Tiffany® Setting, where the diamond is raised from the band, allowing the entire gem to sparkle.

The New York Times eventually gave Charles Lewis Tiffany the nickname “King of Diamonds”. The brand’s collections won honours and awards at international exhibitions and Tiffany was appointed royal jeweller to a number of European monarchs, including the Ottoman Emperor and the Russian Tsar.

181

In the past decade, with a nod to sustainability, the house has developed its collections based on the philosophy of everyday luxury. In 2014, it introduced the Tiffany T collection, the symbol of a new era, designed with an iconic “T” motif representing the luxury house as it is today. Another milestone is the Tiffany True ® engagement ring, the first engagement ring design from the house in over a decade.

182 [ JEWELS ]

In 1902, Louis Comfort Tiffany, a world leader in the American Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements, succeeded his father, the company’s founder. Tiffany’s most important clients included prominent members of American society as well as President Lincoln and young Franklin Roosevelt, who purchased an engagement ring in 1904. In the 20th century Tiffany’s designs captured the spirit of the times, from the excesses of the 1920s to the modernism of the 1930s and the streamlined, aerodynamic shapes of the 1940s and 1950s. Icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Diana Vreeland were not immune to their charm. Over time, the house has welcomed a series of visionary designers, such as the legendary Jean Schlumberger, Elsa Peretti®, who interpreted the 1970s with elegant simplicity and natural forms, and Paloma Picasso®, who created boldly original jewellery designs in the 1980s. In 2012 Tiffany celebrated its 175th anniversary by setting the Tiffany Diamond in a magnificent necklace that embodies the highest standards of the world-renowned brand. Tiffany now boasts over 300 stores worldwide and a workforce of over 14,000 employees, including 3,000 skilled artisans who create and sell precious dreams every day. www.tiffany.com

YACHTS ON SHOW

The sixth BR1 Fleet Show took place at the Villa Igiea Marina in Palermo. Its purpose is to support the commercial activity of our yacht owners, but it also enjoys the atmosphere of a spectacular festival of the sea where it’s possible to admire an exclusive Mediterranean fleet

184 [ DOCKSIDE ]

With the pandemic receding into history, normality has begun to reassert itself with an even more vigorous presence than before. The sixth edition, the first post-Covid, of the BR1 Fleet Show held in spring at Villa Igiea, Palermo, presented many new arrivals and provided a welcome infusion of renewed energy.

The portfolio of yachts on show at the BR1 Fleet Show 2023 included the Cat 54’ Dydimos, the Cat 620’ Blu Destiny, the S/Y 80’ TESS, the S/Y 84 Malizia, the M/Y 87’ ARIA C and the S/Y 90’ My Lotty, all obviously managed by BR limited and commercialised by West Coast International, and all undergoing the usual soft winter refit. Among those absent due to their involvement in sailing activities elsewhere were the Wally 100’ Running of Fight, the Perini Navi 114’ Heritage M and the Dream Yacht 115 Soulmate, but they will certainly be making a showing at the next edition in 2024.

One interesting new feature of the show was the creation of a “luxury tender” area hosting three craft that BR1 uses to offer facilities like a fast shuttle service between its yachts. The three tenders present were the Noah 26’ inflatable “Tess Too” powered by a 270hp diesel, the Axopar 37’ Sun Top with two 350hp outboards and the Wally Tender 48X with four 450hp outboards.

The collaboration with Malta Sail Factory, a Maltese sailmaker for large yachts, created a showcase for the benefits in terms of quality and price of the Maltese product, which boasts standards of construction and technical quality that are the equal of the most important international manufacturers.

The support of a large number of sponsors meant that guests at the event could enjoy hospitality on board the craft on show as well as guided excursions and tastings of Sicilian wines, olive oil and coffee. The brokers in attendance especially enjoyed the gala dinner at “Sicilò Food & Wine”, whose terrace provided a magnificent

185

view of Palermo’s historic centre. As usual there was a “Cocktail Contest” that saw teams from the yachts attending the event take part in a duel to the last drink! As part of the contest the chefs and hostesses from every yacht offered the brokers a cocktail and some finger food. This year the jury made up of professionals present at the event was joined by specialist food and wine journalist Francesca Landolina. The winner of the 2023 contest was the crew of “My Lotty”, comprising Stefania Tagliavia & Dominique Cloete, who came in just ahead of the teams from S/Y TESS (Giovanni Romano & Francesco Busalacchi) and M/Y Soulmate (Eduard Alcantara & Irina Ivaneanu), which arrived at the Villa Igiea Marina to take on the other teams even though the yacht was not one of those on show. The four days of the event included short

technology seminars held by representatives of Sangiorgio Shipping, Luise Associates and Artemis. These provided a great deal of useful information for the brokers, who took a keen interest in the proceedings. Now the 2023 event has drawn to a triumphant conclusion the organisational machinery is gearing up to deal with the current commercial season, as well as considering how to make the next BR1 Fleet Show even better, working with all the brokers and technical partners who made this sixth edition such a resounding success, especially VISTRA Marine, ISTC Malta, Marina Villa Igiea, Riolo, Moak, Ravidà, Tasca D’Almerita, Osmosea and media partners TheOneYacht&Designand ARTE IN. See you again at the end of April next year!

PEACE AND PRIVACY WITH BIOPHILIC DESIGN

Secreted away on the Galluran coastline is a Residential Park that first set out its mission for harmony in the mid-sixties. Today, the location is perfect for those seeking privacy, tranquillity, and exceptional natural beauty

191

The Portobello di Gallura Residential Park was established in 1962 and has been steadily expanding its quest for wellbeing and harmony between man and nature ever since. Pairing innovation with tradition, the residential park was created exclusively for lovers of beauty, bien vivre, and the sheer wonder of places as unspoilt as these. Immobilsarda – Christie’s is listing several properties for sale in the area, which offers 3.5km of coastline and is located just 73km from Olbia airport.

The park’s founders had an avant-garde vision for organic architecture

and the design of the properties here is intrinsically linked to providing quality of life, and both the physical and moral well-being of its inhabitants. Today, the park is a luxuriant Mediterranean maquis, with holm oaks, junipers, colourful flowers, granite rocks that hold the sea close at hand, and fine white-sand beaches. The Residential Park is a gated community, with each property thoughtfully immersed within the landscape. The community is served by two concierge desks and 24-hour security. There’s a mini marina for boats of up to 7.5m length, a tennis club, a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar, a grocery store and small piazza.

192
Indoor-outdoor liveability, guaranteed by more than 180 square meters of terraces and outdoor areas, is a main theme of this design principle,

The project has been conceived by a team of carefully selected architects, planners, technicians, and designers who understand how to enhance the beauty of the territory and surroundings in line with the core principles of modern architecture, neuro architecture, biophilic design and a lifestyle that champions personal wellbeing.

It stands out as a true cultural and urban project. Each villa is intended as its own private, intimate oasis. They are their own microclimatic organism, designed to be lived in all year round, with natural finishes and materials that will weather, soften, and change over time.

One of those for sale is Villa Euforbia, which is spectacularly positioned front-row to the sea. At the heart of the property is a spacious and very bright living room. This space, bordered by full height sliding glass walls, connects the two sides of the villa: the one directly facing the beach, and the back, with its interior courtyard, outdoor kitchen, and natural swimming pool. On the second floor are three bedrooms, including a master suite with private bathroom and sun terrace. Completing this almost 350 sqm property is a 26 sqm underground garage and two outdoor parking spaces. www.immobilsarda.com
