longing for the sea, holidays and sailing away on board our floating dreams. And more and more their exterior lines, architectural solutions, furnishings and technology are little masterpieces. The Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022 has just come come to a close. After a two-year hiatus the event once again opened its doors, to the relief of those in the industry, unleashing once again the pent-up enthusiasm of buyers and aficionados. Many companies producing furniture and design and furnishing solutions work closely with yacht-building yards, enabling them to fit out their yachts according to the desires of increasingly demanding owners. And those who, like us at THE ONE Yacht & Design, are lucky enough visit a number of giga- and megayachts and report on the emotions they inspire, are struck by the variety of solutions adopted and the superb artisanal skill that goes into their creation. If the yards’ order books are anything to go by, the market is flourishing.

As always, THE ONE Yacht & Design’s media platforms offer a generous serving of images and videos with aim not only of describing and discussing but also of inspiring emotion, sharing what we felt as we boarded these lovely craft. We do all this through the pages of the magazine, the theoneyd.com portal, social media (Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin) and the dedicated regular newsletters we send to enthusiasts throughout the world. A big hug to you all, enjoy the magazine and have fun watching the content accessible through the QR codes!

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]

FILIPPO ROSSI CCO OF FLOATING LIFE by Désirée Sormani

What is your view of the market as it is right now? The market is definitely very active and over the last two years, it has really bounced back on every level. Both in terms of charters and demand for new builds: the entire nautical market is involved. That demands huge effort from the yards as they have to meet delivery deadlines. It is absolutely a very positive time in general for the yacht industry, for working and for investing.

20

Life will be developing a network of new clients.

Have you had new charter and new boat purchase clients coming to you since pre-pandemic times? Where are they coming from? The pandemic really powered people’s thirst for enjoying life to and time with their family and friends to the fullest, or simply treating themselves. Obviously, yachting comes into all that as boats are one of the ultimate expressions of desire. The situation has been further boosted by the internet and social media, which means that images circulate all over the world very quickly. Clients are coming from are traditional areas - the US, the Middle East, Europe – but also some of the more remote corners of the globe.

Are you also planning to expand the Fractional Ownership system (whereby owners can own a yacht for a certain amount of time each year or simply a portion of the yacht)? Floating Life has been the expert in that regard with Ocean Pearl for quite some time now. Are you thinking it is the right time to push the new 42m project? We are hearing more and more about sharing of different instant gratification items from cars to homes, and yachting is ready to embrace that phenomenon now too. Floating Life is the only company in the world with 16 years’ experience in yacht fractional ownership. We are convinced, in part because of the requests we are getting, that this is the right time to launch a new project. In fact, we put the process in action last winter and we announced the signing of an agreement with CNN, a Baglietto Group brand, for the building of Dream 42. Currently, three owners have signed up for the Fractional Ownership programme but contracts are under negotiation also with further clients. There will be a maximum of seven owners of this yacht.

You recently joined the Floating Life team… what do you see as your mission? I absolutely relished joining Floating Life and putting my 20 years’ experience in the nautical sector to good use, having seen yachts from various different angles over the years. I have held very diverse positions: I’ve been a designer, head of a yard, a sales broker and managed a management company. I have seen boats from very different perspectives. That means I can really understand clients and what they need so I can offer closer, more tailored support. But my biggest contribution to Floating

Floating Life is celebrating two decades of success in yacht management this year. What was the choice you made that sets you apart from your competitors? The difference between Floating Life and other agencies is that management is the focus of our service. We concentrate on this aspect and so the service we offer really is different. FL began life as a yacht management company and then developed to follow and meet the requests of the clients who put their trust in us. This is definitely the secret of our success. It is also a relationship based on carefully listening to the needs of each owner.

TIS been a real MADSUMMER – the sky was a bright QUANTUM BLUE and every day began like an ELYSIAN dream with the AURORA of the warm RISING SUN. In the evening, thanks to the light of a CRESCENT moon, I’d look at the PLATINUM mountains, where a FLYING FOX would escape from the bat caves into unknowable OASIS of the deep night. Even the very smallest things were magical, such as a tiny SEA STAR, in a vast CORAL OCEAN. Then one day, it all started with a BLIND DATE. I met her in ONTARIO, she was RADIANT. I hoped that one day she’d BE MINE and that together our possibilities would be nothing less than LIMITLESS in this wonderful BELLA VITA. It was KISMET, fate, and I’d found my ACE. ALFONSO DOLCE CEO OF DOLCE&GABBANA CASA by Marta Bernasconi

The Dolce&Gabbana Casa Collection transfers the creative signatures that made the fashion brand famous to furniture and design. All of the items in the collection are exceptionally decorative thanks to the liberal use of colours typical of the Sicilian and Mediterranean roots that remain a constant source of inspiration for the brand.

22

What are the various lines in the Dolce&Gabbana Casa Collection and how have you transferred the brand’s heritage to them? Thanks to its Carretto Siciliano (Sicilian Cart), Blu Mediterraneo, Leopardo and Zebra themes, the Col-lection is a tribute to artisanal excellence, Italian design and the authentic codes of Dolce&Gabbana’s DNA. From furnishing elements to accessories – tableware, textiles, upholstery, decorative objects, rugs and wallpaper – the Casa Collection is a further example of how you can live the Dolce&Gabbana lifestyle even beyond your wardrobe. Is Sicily still one of the main sources of inspiration for you? Sicily and the Mediterranean have always played a fundamental role in Dolce&Gabbana’s creativity and that also applies to the Casa Collection, as these visual cues can be seen in the Carretto Siciliano and Blu Mediterraneo motifs. But the same values also inspire and underpin the project too: Mediterranean lands have always been defined by their hospitality, welcome and wellbeing. These same elements un-derpin this Collection which dedicated to the art of home living and everyday life. Could you tell us about the artisanal elements involved in the colours and work involved? The Collection uses absolutely excellent materials selected after lengthy research and development work. They range from prized oak to décor elements such as silk, jacquard and velvet for the textiles, hand-painted Sicilian ceramics to table accessories and glass blown by the Murano master glassblowers for our glasses and decanters. Special pieces such as armchairs and cushions feature small-stitch em-broidery, an homage to our fashion background: Dolce&Gabbana Casa is a huge celebration of both arti-sanal craftsmanship and Made in Italy. Will you be presenting anything new at the Salone del Mobile? After our premiere in Venice last autumn and the opening of the first Dolce&Gabbana Casa stores in Mi-lan, Capri, Cannes and Puerto Banus (which will be followed by more worldwide), this year’s Salone offered us an opportunity to officially unveil the Collection to the public at large. The aim is to consoli-date the existing lines while simultaneously broadening the range. It’s an adventure and even though it’s only just begun, we already have so many designs! What would be the ideal home according to Dolce&Gabbana? There is no such thing as one perfect home for everyone. But there is a perfect home for every one of us. This is true too of Dolce&Gabbana Casa: just as is the case with clothes, the most important thing is to feel at ease, in this instance in the environment we live in, with its furnishings and colours. Anywhere that makes you feel at home is the ideal home.

SAFETY AT SEA A NECESSITY NOT A CHOICE! by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder of Floating Life

M

any years ago when I was a little boy, a man who had spent his entire life at sea (my granddad), told me: “Remember that you don’t have to be afraid of the sea, but you do have to respect it”. Years later when I was talking to another very experienced sailor, he said to me: “You won’t make it a mile (1,852 metres) off the coast if you aren’t incredibly sporty and an expert ashore. Remember that when you are designing your boats. Tomorrow there will be people aboard them and you will be responsible for them even if you are not physically aboard with them”. Those simple words had a very positive influence on my entire life but also make me exceptionally critical when I, all too often, see yachts, particularly those under 500 GT, built or maintained without taking these observations into account. Unfortunately, today’s rules are making it easier and

easier to build at the very limits of safety and to ignore what was once called the designer and builder’s sense of responsibility as the “head of the family”. We are seeing more and more beautiful Class A yachts with the CE brand deemed suitable “for unlimited navigation” but with the bare minimum (if that) of safety requirements to tackle squally seas. The sea can get up during a long, possibly ocean passage, for example to the Caribbean, and then there is no port or cove nearby to take shelter in. So I would say to my fellow designers, the yards and owners too that when they are designing, building or buying a boat, be it small or large, please ask yourselves “If I were aboard this craft when the waves were four metres or more, would I be coming home?” Ask yourselves this simple question and then you can be at peace with yourself and your conscience and go on with your work or your purchase.

But will my plea be heard… Or will I just be shouting against the wind?

auta Design and Wider have announced the start of construction of the innovative Moonflower 72 superyacht. The 72m steel and aluminium displacement craft is clothed in Nauta Design’s trademark clean, timeless lines and will guarantee guests superb liveability combined with seamless connections between indoor and outdoors. Extensive glass and predominantly horizontal lines underscore the balance of the yacht’s proportions while a chamfered sheer line amidships adds dynamism. Another feature is ‘The Island’, a Nauta Design patent, which is an expandable aft deck/beach club with folding bulwark terraces, that allows guests to move freely from one side of the yacht to the other, from both inside beach club and the open aft deck. The Moonflower 72 will sport the Wider hybrid propulsion system which is made up of two 1860 kW variable-speed generators and a 1MW sodium nickel battery bank. Great attention was lavished on recovering energy dispersed in the form of heat by the electric propulsion system, as well as using AI to learn the habits of owners, guests and crew to help optimise the use of onboard amenities thereby improving efficiency and reducing consumption. www.nautadesign.com

The 77m Merveille 253 W, a project in common with Feadship, is a lean, clean motoryacht with a beam of 19 that promises exceptional space. One unique feature is a forwardfacing owner’s suite in the traditional wheelhouse position. However, it is in its efficiency that this yacht truly excels. Like all Merveille Eco-explorers, the 77m sports the fully automated Oceanwings® system designed by AYRO, a spin-off of VPLP. The latter is automated and the wings themselves rotate through 360 degrees, furling and unfurling autonomously. Needless to say, they great boost range and autonomy. It doesn’t seem like sixty years. The event that has just ended was a special one, because this year marked an important anniversary and because of the long wait that stoked anticipation in the design world. The circumstances of the pandemic did not mean the design furniture companies were sitting around doing nothing – just the opposite, in fact, as they have used this time for research, and the results are now out there for all to see, after a Milan Design Week that acted as an international showcase. The manifold trends influencing the new collections include reaffirmation and innovation. A phenomenon that has gradually been gaining ground, the emphasis on full environmental sustainability now involves an object’s entire production cycle, from materials choice to easy disassembly and subsequent re-use. The concept of sustainable living based increasingly on a circular economy was also the subject of the “Design with Nature” installation by architect Mario Cucinella, and shaped the philosophy behind the 2022 Furniture Show. A second theme linking a number of proposals is the search for multifunctional furniture, with pieces that can be moved from one interior to another, or from interior to exterior. The need to adapt to a home that has suddenly been forced to assimilate different lifestyles over the past two years, including smart working and distance learning, has encouraged research into a new flexibility in the furnishing industry, too. The Milan Design Week 2022 was also driven by a burst of creative energy. Many innovations and new designers made

their debut on the international stage, and numerous proposals appeared as re-editions of famous pieces that have shaped design history. And speaking of creativity and transmigration, this year the yacht-building sector also sought to take advantage of the vitality of the FuoriSalone - Sanlorenzo Yachts returned to the setting of Milan University with the Fabbrica project by Piero Lissoni as part of the exhibition/event INTERNI Design Re-Generation, revealing something of the place where the yachts are built and evoking the experience of stepping on board the new projects taking shape there. At the Superstudio, Rossinavi presented BlueE, an installation with a powerful immersive experience, a sort of plunge into the sea depths to engage in direct contact with phytoplankton, while up above the new generation of zero-emission catamarans Oneiric, a new line of multi-hull craft developed in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), sailed virtually through the waves. Pirelli, the Furniture Show partner, was present at Rho with a special edition of the 11-metre walkaround Pirelli 35 by TecnoRib, which recently won the Red Dot Design Award 2022. Finally, Azimut also advertised its presence with an event at Amdl Circle, Michele De Lucchi’s studio, open to the public like a furniture unit whose open drawers display its designs. All these cross-fertilisation initiatives show just how close the yacht-building and residential worlds really are, prompting us to present a collection of how THE ONE Yacht& Design would furnish a floating villa.

The iconic graphics that have made the garment brand famous clothe the pieces from the home collection Dolce&Gabbana Casa in various materials and surfaces. In this photo, the Blu Mediterraneo line develops the theme of white and blue, evoking maiolica pottery and the interior of Southern Italian homes. The result is an entire furnishing line – its stand-out pieces include the Atena side table with top and base in decorated, polished wood and the Lavanda armchair with legs shaped by master carpenters

A similar harmony of shapes and colours can be seen in the main deck saloon – a sculptural table in intense blue surrounded by sofas (to the left by Molteni with custom-designed model by Bismut&Bismut to the right) and a Mark Newson rattan armchair stands in the centre of a perfectly balanced architectural composition. In the forward owner’s suite the bed is placed athwart the cabin, an unusual but highly functional choice that has left space for a sofa and desk, both by Bismut&Bismut, and a chair by Hella Jongerius. The clean, uncluttered sun deck has two facing sofas sheltered by a hard top, with storage units integrated into the structure. The four guest cabins and crew area are on the lower deck. Crew movement around the yacht is planned in such a way as to avoid the guest areas. A sculptural staircase connects the three main decks, the “project’s backbone, a very strong element in the main deck’s axes of perception. It was conceived as two ribbons unfurling in curves of mineral and fabric print textures” say the designers.

Exterior Design Bernardo Zuccon, Zuccon International Project

T

he navette concept still stimulates and fascinates me. It’s a yacht type that I always associate with a sort of romanticism that takes me back in time. I think the SD118 is an important project because it expresses a balance between conserving some of the stylistic features that have always characterised the navette type and the technical innovations that have in some ways influenced this return to these evocations of classic ideas in what is, I believe, a very respectful way. As a designer I think that one of the most important aspects of my work is creating objects that can resist the passage of time. Our project seeks to communicate this message by means of one fundamental element – defining the equilibrium in the relationship between hull and superstructure. On the SD118 the hull once again acquires great dignity. In the relationship between interior and exterior spaces we developed dynamic, flexible approach that enables many of these spaces can be used in different ways, depending on the time of day or guest requirements.

62

Two of the three sides of the upper deck lounge in direct contact with the sea can drop down completely to create new scenarios that enable exterior and interior spaces to blend in a unique way. The owner’s suite on the forward main deck also has a privileged contact with the exterior – half of the wide central staircase linking the open-air lounge forward with the upper deck runs inside the superstructure, providing the owner with direct access to the owner’s suite forward and the upper deck. This flexibility should be exploited in-depth because it also means creating different on-board opportunities. There isn’t one specific element of this navette that I take pride in more than any other, but what does make me proud is understanding that there are many avenues of research into experiencing the yacht that still remain open. This yacht is proof that we can still produce something new with small alterations to some equilibria. From my point of view it’s one of those things I’ve set myself to achieve, one of my professional objectives – always to tell new stories.

Sober lines and clean essential shapes characterise Mouchka’s exterior. Below, part of the central staircase connecting the two levels of the forward external lounge becomes concaealed in the superstructure. The staircase provides direct access to the exterior from main deck owner’s suite

Interior Design Daniel and Michel Bismut, Bismut&Bismut Architects

W

e were asked to think of another way to imagine a boat interior… a boat that would not resemble any other, breaking away from the traditional codes prevalent in the previous generation of yachting design. Definitely not urban, with a “smooth” atmosphere, user-friendly and easy to live in, lent additional interest and appeal by attractive touches of colors and textures. The central idea was to create a sophisticated beach hut by using worn textures, introducing bright and warm colors and curves. We wanted a wraparound shell and atmosphere. Modern, cosy, cool, chic & natural and with a “sea attitude”. We wanted very open main spaces, oriented as far as possible to provide exterior views. They should also be extremely flexible, providing the opportunity to dine inside or out and use a space as a saloon or dining area. We also wanted to disrupt conventional yacht styling codes by introducing luxurious comfort with an unostentatious feel. We’ve paid great attention to design details, seeking to create a calming atmosphere. For the surfaces we’ve mixed textures and integrated touches of colors into the project - rough oak, traditional lacquered panels, terrazzo, lava stone, copper and glass in a graduated green deep color. The wraparound headboards are in a traditional blue-green. The choice of colours was obvious as we wanted to create a very soothing atmosphere in the main areas. Less natural light enters the lower deck cabins, though, so we decided to use traditional artisanal techniques with green/blue lacquered paint creating a sensation of depth and giving the space a strong personality. We’ve tried to allow as much natural light as possible to penetrate the yacht interiors, and we decided to make the artificial lighting rather discreet, using lamps that tend to create a daylight effect and won’t alter the colours in the spaces. If you asked about our favourite place on board, we’d say we are very happy with the staircase, but spending a night in a VIP cabin, with all the colors and embracing shapes gives an extraordinary feeling of wellbeing. It feels wonderful to wake up!

64

ouchka is the fourth Sanlorenzo yacht this refined Parisian owner has commissioned from us and the second to include interior design by the French Bismut&Bismut studio. All this is typical of the relationship our clients have with the brand, which I believe is the most suitable and sartorially-skilled yard to make their villa on the sea, with all the details they love and all the opportunities we can offer with every model. Mouchka is a 35-metre craft, quite a large yacht, but we devote the same attention to the tailor-made concept in our smaller models, too.

66

There has been a constant dialogue between owner, yard and designer. The owner was a constant presence and worked alongside the architects to develop even the smallest details, from design pieces to materials and surfaces, the sculptural staircase to the design of the handles and the Parisian studio’s typical wall and furniture shapes – never banal, they lend even greater beauty to the spaces. The asymmetry of the upper deck has made it possible to gain precious floor area in the saloon, generating an unusual

Careful optimisation of the spaces has enabled the designers to create a large outdoor living area forward. It is equipped with loungers, some freestanding and some integrated into the yacht’s structure

spaciousness. For me, this asymmetry is a sort of homage to the great architectural historian Bruno Zevi, who in his book The Modern Language of Architecture described how of the seven invariables of modern architecture, asymmetry was of special interest in its ability to enhance the dynamism of contemporary architecture. The SD118 is a development of the SD112 and is part of Sanlorenzo’s SD line of semi-displacement yachts with exterior lines reinterpreted by Zuccon International Project, which after the 96 and 118 is now working on the new 132, which is to replace the 126. With the elegance Sanlorenzo always insists

on, Bernardo Zuccon brings an especially skilful touch to the sobriety of the lines. Our yachts are the result of extensive technological and design research. At the moment, for example, we are currently in partnership with Siemens to develop hybrid methanol and fuel cell engines. The search for a greener nautical industry continues – it’s no coincidence that Patricia Urquiola is about to complete the design for the SD90S, where S stands for sustainable, as she has devoted all her efforts towards creating a greener model using recycled or recyclable materials.

he first thing we thought about with the yard was how to maintain the brand and create innovative lines while remaining loyal to Mangusta’s DNA. Making a break from the past was a must: it was important to demonstrate that this was a new generation but to do that without skewing the yard’s family feeling. Apart from technical parameters like a high top speed, which every Mangusta Open has to have, Mangustas have an instantly recognisable and uniquely distinctive profile. The Mangusta silhouette is created by just three lines: a long and fast bow line starting from the bow, then a short one at the aft ‘hips’, and the superstructure one arching above them.

104

That is how we managed to strike a balance of classic, modern yet also quite disruptive lines. I didn’t want to this Mangusta to like every other boat. It had to be something different…. that was not an easy job. I love cars and the colour we chose came from car design as did the complex and enjoyable shapes. But I also love sculpture so I always try to shape the forms as if they were a sculpture when I design, although obviously within the constraints of boat building principles. I did the same aboard too: there are a lot of sculpted forms which although they do respect construction principles still strive to

push the boundaries and raise the design bar as high as possible. I was like a sculptor sculpting wood, trying to find the right shape: I went over and over it to create and hone the forms and details. We worked with much more complex surfaces than are usual in the industry, which you are now enjoying. The sections of the hull at the bow and especially at the aft hips are very curvy and full. The aft tail above the garage door is convex and concave in the same place and at the same time. It is convex when seen from the top and concave on the side view. There were lots of challenges aboard. It’s hard to even list them all, but perhaps the most difficult was an engine room grille which we tried to keep fast and light but still efficient enough to provide air for ventilation.

Above, the interior designer with Overmarine CEO Maurizio Balducci. Top, an aerial view of the yacht revealing the flow of the onboard spaces which particularly impressed her American owner. Comfortable and functional convivial/sunning areas fit seamlessly into the scenario

he interiors are warm, intimate and contemporary in style, a choice we made by thinking in terms of a cosmopolitan owner to ensure they would appeal to different tastes. In fact, the first example required no modifications whatsoever and was purchased exactly as it was. They were designed to be bright with circular flows, thanks to large windows and solutions that amplify the volumes and create new connections. The entire aft section flows effortlessly into the saloon with no barriers between interiors and exteriors. A sliding glass door can be used to separate the two areas but also completely disappears when open. Large windows draw the gaze out to the endless views outside. A round window on the end wall of the saloon helps foster the stern/bow perception, creating a single deck with no limits. We chose a neutral colour palette centred around shades of grey and cream to achieve a cosmopolitan style that would appeal to different types of owners and also reflect market trends. Bespoke-designed furniture (such as the mega screen housing) is mixed with pieces selected by the leading home design brands. We also brought the sea inside and created reflections by using various polished and reflective materials. We introduced lots of different materials aboard, all very textural to create a tactile appeal. Car design often comes into my designs and here I used the theme of circularity, which works well with the soft, sinuous exterior and in the interiors. In the latter, I did this through a whole host of elements like mirrors, spotlights and light sources, which are mixed with home design moods with lots of movement. I don’t like designs that are too clean and angular, a home has to feel lived in. Just like the main saloon, my favourite place onboard because it is so eclectic and un-boring, like a house with variety of furniture from different eras. This was a new and fascinating experience for me with a yard that wants change and to change itself.

106

The interiors are bright with circular flows thanks to large windows and other clever solutions that amplify the sense of space and create new connections. Below, one of the two guest cabins. angusta has always been synonymous with Maxi Opens with big volumes and excellent performances. All melded into an unmistakable design that has made our craft easily recognisable. So we wanted to innovate but without losing what makes our line unique and maintaining a family feeling with the previous line. To do that we called in Igor Lobanov: we had seen some of the yachts he’d done and we liked his style. So we contacted him and explained how we imagined the new Mangustas. Lobanov, who trained in the car design sector, immediately shared our vision. The first example was sold to an American who’d only seen her on paper. He was bowled over by her exterior line and the interior, first and foremost. We are happy to report that after using her, the owner was satisfied with the interior and exterior spaces aboard and the comfort underway delivered by the water jet propulsion system. The latter means you can have a shallow draft, making the yacht ideal for the Bahamas in winter and the Hamptons in summer. The Mangusta 104 REV was not an easy vessel to build. At the engineering phase of the project, we stuck religiously to the Lobanov studio’s design. Making the moulds for the hull and cabin, the large double-curve windows, the steel for the fairleads and endless other details was very complex but it is those very details that make the project unique. We have a lot of very highly specialised people working in our yard, with a strong critical faculties and lots of experience. They were the first judges of what we had designed and every single one liked the result. We are also very happy with the good feedback from the people who visited the Mangusta 104 REV at Cannes, and its commercial success. Number 2 is being delivered in the coming days. From the outside, she is a twin of the first example, but her interiors were redesigned somewhat to meet the owner’s requirements. A further three have also been sold and are in build for delivery by next summer. But this is only the start: the Mangusta 104 REV and the entry level model which will be joined this summer by the new series flagship, Mangusta 165 REV, also designed with the Lobanov studio in close collaboration with our own in-house technical offices.

atiana is truly one-of-a-kind in terms of her design and comfort elements. We created a very attractive yacht with a sleek and sexy profile while avoiding a high dosage of design clichés. The Bilgin 263 has a design attitude that will dominate the yachting sector around the world and make her a trendsetter among the steel-aluminium superyachts of today. We designed Tatiana with sporty and contemporary lines while paying lots of attention to aesthetic details. From the very first meeting, we focused on creating a sport superyacht with elegant living areas. In fact, it was a challenge for us to design a yacht that was both sporty and masculine. The Bilgin 263 is full of surprises inside and outside. The beach club, which is connected to the main living room, is very accessible and large enough to cater for big gatherings. Tenders and sea toys are located on the front deck, which is how we managed to have a swimming pool of 8.5-metre length and 1.4-metre depth in the beach club. As the size of a yacht gets bigger, it becomes a bit more difficult for the owner to feel connected to the sea. In order to avoid this on Tatiana, we used large windows, private terraces and outdoor socialising areas. Furthermore, each cabin offers different perspectives to those who stay there. Tatiana has a well-balanced and optimised superstructure which leads her to sail up to 19 knots with zero dynamic trim. This way, she will be a very economical yacht compared to her contemporaries. Additionally, while sailing at 12 knots speed with the power of 2,560 kW twin engines and a generator, the fuel consumption is around 250 litres per hour, which we were only used to seeing on a 40-metre yacht until now. So, Tatiana is a different and a brand-new concept not only with the design attitude but also with the performance.

atiana was designed for an extremely family-oriented client, for entertaining and socialising with family and friends and spending months on end on board during the summer. The yacht is contemporary in layout with generous living areas, a huge spa and a beach club on the aft deck. We worked hard to create a functional experience and every room on board is generously sized and offers a true connection to the sea via multiple large windows. On the Bilgin 263 series in general, we have aimed for a modern and detailed residential look for a home-away-from-home feel, with all the amenities required to enjoy life on the ocean. The styling is aggressive and sleek, which meant that the interior had to work within this restricted footprint yet offer everything the client wished for. The theme of Tatiana’s interior is based on a light but rich palette, while the design is crisp and contemporary in feel. This stunning interior complements the modern exterior perfectly. The design can be described as layers of luxury modern. We wanted to achieve an open and airy feel for a clean and sleek look, so the best option was to use light and textured luxury materials. There is a strong emphasis on details through the use of special and unique materials – textures used in the living areas attract people from the first moment. With Tatiana’s sharp, crisp interior lines giving that feel of modernity, we have

This is combined with plenty of marble and touches of detail, such as backlit marble, 3D carved stone, and strong textures. The result is comfortable and luxurious, yet usable, interiors. Timeless understatement is indeed the recurrent theme on board.

atiana has forged the path forward and cemented Bilgin Yachts’ commitment to incorporating and advancing eco-friendly solutions for all its new builds and upcoming projects. We create yachts that are considered as homes for our clients while showing respect to our world. Climate change and environmental pollution are two main issues against which we need to fight and, luckily, we share these values with our longterm clients and our collaborators as well. Tatiana’s hull form is based on eco-friendly approach. The design incorporates innovations such as a special exhaust system for 100% clean air emissions. We also have a partnership with MTU engines for SCR application in the yacht segment – it is a distinguishing feature connected to the main engines and generators. Additionally, having IMO TIER III compliance and being an ABS-classed yacht, Tatiana has earned the right to cruise all around the world and anchor in very protected bays. With the values behind her design, comfort elements and style, Tatiana represents Bilgin’s values and has become a real ambassador for the shipyard. As a family, we care to combine the past and the future together, which exists in Tatiana. You can see this in the vertical front glasses that create harmony, the top deck with its flowing design and the abundant socialising areas both inside and outside. Not to mention that she has become a milestone for superyacht construction in Turkey, since she is the first superyacht in the region that has ever been built in this size category. Both with its design and comfort details, the Bilgin 263 series is truly oneof-a-kind. You have a modern yacht with the latest technology and a true understanding of luxury and comfort, but not design clichés. Each yacht in this series has a unique approach; common elements while differing subtly in the lifestyle they provide. We are proud of every detail and each project comes with its own beauty.

a Double J was founded in 2015 in Milan by JJ Martin, a journalist and collector born in Los Angeles with a flair for uncovering the finest vintage pieces and new creative talent. The brand’s initial focus was on clothing and vintage jewellery but after a few years it expanded to cater for complete lifestyle. It draws inspiration from just about everything – so long as it’s not minimal - and includes archive prints, rare vintage pieces with images evoking untamed worlds depicted in a riot of joyful colours. The recent launch of the Flora & Fauna tableware line is a further step forward along this creative path, guided by a high-

spirited imagination. Illustrations by the Romanian artist Aitch, creator of the murals in the Milanese store, interpret a mystical, transcendental dimension through the lens of the surreal. The elaborate composition with symbols ranging from the mystical to the bucolic complement porcelain and fabric elements to create table arrangements that are impossible to ignore. The beauty of the plates, glasses, tablecloths and aprons is also reflected in the making of these products. The pieces in the La DoubleJ collection are entirely Italian-made, and in acknowledgement of the artistic value and quality of local artisanal skills they are produced by established collaborators. One of these is Verona-based Ancap, which creates, fires several times and finally hand finishes 18-carat gold-edged porcelain pieces, offered in sets of two or six in flat, dish or bowl versions. There is also an extensive fabric collection, with tablecloths, place mats and pure linen aprons produced on the shores of Lake Maggiore. A collection that once again displays the brand’s flair and inspiration – maximalism expressed through shapes and colours that communicate harmony and the sheer joy of living. www.ladoublej.com

It was a sort of yacht design that opened the doors to the yacht-building world, a showcase that enabled me to form contacts with owners who are otherwise difficult to reach”. Whether it’s a villa or yacht, Achille Salvagni approaches his work with the same originality and culture. And if it’s true that the line between residential and yachting is increasingly less well-defined, Salvagni says, “You have to be careful not to create monsters…I find it aberrant to transfer the experience of residential design to yachts, because a yacht isn’t a house – it doesn’t have the same compositional logic. A yacht is a system that develops in a theme codified at the outset, like the interstellar voyage on board Club M, while a house can be codified many times. You can modify dimensions, surfaces, colours...then there’s the context…a yacht is an object that moves and constantly changes its setting, but the visual connections between a house and its location are fundamental: an apartment overlooking Central Park doesn’t have the same conditioning as a residence in Cairo or an Alpine valley. I don’t like creating fake settings that seem to have been assembled the day before. And to me, tradition is a springboard for a leap into the future. History is a starting point, a way to conquer what lies ahead in a logic that is always serene. I’m not a shouter, I’m the kind of person who tries do things quietly. Floating Life brings Italian-made refinement and quality on board, dressing the crew in garments made in the textile region of Como, a centre of excellence for Italy and the world. This high-end clothing is focussed on owners’ requirements, with an offer that includes made-to-measure solutions

T

he motoryacht world is a multifaceted one, and buying and managing large yachts takes a great deal of time and energy. Some owners prefer to

take a hands-on role, while others place their trust in companies who take care of these services for them. Floating Life, a predominantly Swiss group comprising seven companies, specialises in this complex field. At the moment it handles all-round management of eighteen yachts, dealing with all the demands of running a vessel of this kind, from crew to logistics, administration and technical supervision during the winter period. Through Floating Life Charter & Brokerage it works in sales, purchasing and charter, and Floating Life Italy, based in Varese, mainly handles the design, production and sales of Italian-made crew uniforms. The emphasis on outstanding quality is the choice of Floating Life CEO Barbara Tambani, who was responsible for the idea behind these products. She and her husband, Andrea Pazzini, each own 50% of the company. Tambani personally follows the group’s entire administrative, financial and commercial activities, coordinating a team of thirty. Given her long experience in this field she is well-versed in the secrets behind effective management of yachts like these - the most important is being able to anticipate the requirements of the demanding clients she represents. “In 2006 I said to my husband that I’d like to create something feminine”, says Barbara Tambani. “I noticed that changing uniforms was a significant element in a yacht’s budget, and the main reason was that our competitors had a different corporate strategy from the one we follow – they would renew garments almost every year. If one single crew member was replaced, they were obliged to buy 145

[ XXXXXXXXX ]

146

a whole new set of uniforms because the previous year’s models were no longer in production”. This inspired the idea of creating crew uniforms while looking at the situation from the point of view of the owner – he or she may have a large budget at their disposal, but that doesn’t mean there should be no limits on spending. “I took on a very young stylist”, says Tambani. “I created my collection with her, supervising all the details. We now offer two lines – the first is “The Collection”, technical garments produced using exclusively Italian fabrics that we have dyed and made up in workshops in northern Italy. The garments are always in stock, so a yacht is free to buy even just two sets of Bermuda shorts because they’ve changed two crew members. The Privée Collection, though, is made-to-measure, so garments made in the past are sources of inspiration but can’t be repeated”. We offer garments with special embroidery or made using luxury fabrics that are greatly admired by clients with large yachts from 70 metres in length and with a crew of as many thirty people. Our owners want their staff to stand out. We complement this with highend service – our stylist goes on board and designs the models right there, taking the entire crew’s measurements. They’ll then be sent a parcel with all their personalised uniforms, bearing their names. They’re durable garments that don’t fade and don’t cause allergies because the fabrics are selected and made up in line with European standards. For the technical clothing, for example, we chose a sanitised fabric that’s also used in hospitals. “Italy possesses a degree of design and production excellence that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. It would be a sacrilege not to exploit this!” says Tambani, who plans to become owner within a year of a workshop that will work exclusively for Floating Life, giving her direct control of garment production times. https://floatinglifestyle.com

he design of the Swan 98 started as an evolution of the Swan 95 at the request of a client, a well-known sailor, looking forward to cruising and doing occasional races with his friends and family. For Be Cool, the aim was to conceive and build an elegant, good-looking, strong, reliable bluewater cruiser/racer capable of sailing the world in comfort and safety. She was designed and built with perfect Nautor’s Swan DNA, embodying the qualities of Performance, Elegance, Quality, Innovation and Reliability. The hull characteristics are those of a well-balanced, sea-kindly, nice-looking Swan. The Swan 98’s construction is, as you would expect, uncompromising. Both hull and deck are built using epoxy SPRINT® pre-preg carbon fibre interior and exterior skins on a core of M-grade Corecell foam. This gives the ultimate in structural stiffness and rigidity at the lightest possible weight, while at the same time ensuring absolute structural safety and reliability. The main features of the exterior layout are aesthetically pleasant comfortable areas to enjoy the natural elements and easy access to the sea. The deck itself provides dual-purpose spaces for both efficient sailing and resting in style. The spacious open foredeck provides the perfect sun deck while at anchor and space for sail handling while cruising. Aft of the coachroof there is a ‘grande’ leisure cockpit completely clear of lines that allows owner and guests to relax underway and enjoy the sun, sheltered by a sprayhood that disappears into a coachroof recess when not in use. At anchor, this cockpit becomes a social lounge space with versatile deck sofas, and converts to an elegant dining area. The design, the construction, sophisticated high quality interior and its layout, excellent sound insulation are all elements that make this yacht unique. What makes me proud about Be Cool? Her name describes her perfectly!

T

he philosophy I use to guide me when I am designing Swan interiors centres around the idea that tradition and innovation should come together in a project without any pointless extremism or virtuosity. The basic principles are precision and method and using authentic natural and traditional materials combined with uncompromising artisanal craftsmanship. In terms of the fit-outs for the Swan 98, I created four different “moods” linked to different visions of the owner who will find the codes of his own personal world reflected at sea. The basic moods I created for the Swan Maxis are Timeless Classic, Traditional Navy and Wine Cowes. The first is elegant and cosmopolitan, the second is more closely connected to yacht club traditions, and Red Wine/Cowes is for the more convivial and enthusiastic. The Spirit of Finland basic mood is the authentic Nordic racing tradition in all its beauty and absolute simplicity. Be Cool’s owner said “I want a special boat”. He is an individual with a signature passion for modern art and a very sporty love of life at sea. Personalising this yacht was about finding a

160

natural path between his requests and Swan DNA that would enhance both. All of this was achieved by creating a balanced mix of the different elements of the Moods and meticulous research into detailing… but it was also made easier by the owner’s own knowledge of the theme. The mood selected for Be Cool is Traditional Navy, which is characterised by satin-finish dark oak furnishings. The dark oak is matched with lighter bands in the saloon flooring which reference the classic Swan planking. Dark oak is also used throughout the interiors including the crew quarters and galley in typically consistent Swan style. With Be Cool, the “Owner – Design – Yard” team managed to create the kind of high powered creative path you need to achieve the result… and I am very proud of that.

The interiors exude superb stylistic consistently in both the guest and crew areas. Below, one of the two two-berth guest cabins. Above, the separate stairs leading down to the crew area which includes the galley (opposite page) and two two-berth en suite cabins foremost

e Cool is our first Swan 98 and opens a new chapter in Nautor’s Swan’s maxi segment. The brief was to build an uncompromising boat capable of sailing around the world and delivering high performance. Helming and sailing this yacht delivers a genuinely unique emotional impact that I had the pleasure of experiencing during the passage from BTC, Nautor’s Swan HQ in Pietarsaari to Stockholm. She is the first of four vessels in the series and was conceived as a performance package so that she could compete in all the international regattas yet still have all the amenities and unique design to ensure the owner could also enjoy comfortable, relaxing cruising. The Swan 98 -002, on the other hand, was designed and built for family cruising between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, but has also performance excellently in several international regattas. The same applies to the 3rd and 4th units. These are customisable maxis and that means that no Swan 98 will be the same in terms of interior décor. With regard to the interior layout, we have an owner aft and an owner forward version. In addition, the versatility and completeness of the Swan product mean the owner can customize it during the build process. Because of this specific owner’s focus on performance, every possible detail that could help keep Be Cool’s displacement light was included with no expense spared – in addition to Nautor’s trademark meticulous construction. Wherever possible, every detail was made from materials such as carbon or titanium, including the deck hardware which includes several custom pieces. In this regard, the entire rig is special with a high modulus carbon mast and AEROsix from FutureFibres special carbon elliptical.

lthough over the past two years the lockdown caused by the pandemic meant many sectors

had to shut down operations, companies working in creativity and innovation took advantage of the situation to dedicate time to the research and development of new products. One of these is H-Fog, an appliance that rethinks the way sanitisation of interiors is carried out. Alberto Vuan, an entrepreneur who has extensive experience in domotic systems applied to the hospitality and residential industries, explains H-Fog in more detail: “Simple Fabrica, based in Pordenone, is a new enterprise that exploits the knowledge acquired over the past thirty years in the smart buildings and domotics sector, using it to drive innovation in sanitisation and bio-safety. The idea behind H-Fog developed during the first lockdown in early 2022, with the aim of taking advantage of technical expertise to create the world’s first blockchain certified sanitiser. A certified appliance and process are a guarantee of safety for operators and users, and that was missing during the emergency, a period when there was a lot of improvisation in this field.” Essentially, Alberto Vuan of Simple Fabrica and designer Jodorsi (Giuseppe D’Orsi) have developed an appliance that can initiate the sanitisation process independently during the night, when nobody is present. “We’ve digitalised an analogue process traditionally carried out manually, and not certifiable, transforming it into a machine-to-machine process

169

[ BESPOKE ]

H-Fog is based on the digital transformation of a manual procedure, providing credibility for a process previously carried out using traditional methods that cannot be fully certified. And with a drastic reduction in cost

that entirely avoids any risk of human error”. The product’s rapid development was made possible by experience and background of the company and its founder. For thirty years Alberto Vuan has been CEO of the company he founded, which is a leader in the design and construction of domotic systems for the hospitality sector, also called “Intelligent Rooms”. It then developed a new generation of smart switches called IoT (Internet of Things), winning a special mention at the Compasso d’Oro event alongside Vitrum in 2010. Now, Simple and H-Fog have opened up new opportunities for smart domotics. The next development of the appliance, H-Fog combo, is set for launch this autumn. It will activate two sanitisation processes in sequence – during the day it will sanitise the air and during the night, when noone is present, the surfaces. The bespoke nature of the product applies to its functioning and aesthetics – the glass front panel has an elegant, personalisable finish. www.simplegroup.ch

THE NEXT GENERATION Never has a boat of this size offered so many features. Characterised by Solaris Power’s unmistakable design, an innovative 44-foot model is the latest addition to its Open range and represents a big step forward compared to models of the same size by Bryony Mc Cabe

S

ince 1974, Solaris Power has designed and built boats focused on seaworthiness, originating with the construction of ocean sailing yachts to handle the most extreme of seas. The new Solaris Power 44 Open continues this philosophy by

offering staggering seagoing capabilities in luxurious comfort. The naval architecture, designed by Brunello Acampora of Victory Design, has unique characteristics compared to other day-cruisers of the same category, offering comfort, stability and excellent performance in both displacement and planing speeds. Since the first sea trials, the model has reached over 38 knots of maximum speed – exceeding the most ambitious expectations. Firstly, the sharp shape of the yacht’s bow and the pronounced flare softens the boats passage through the waves and keeps the deck dry even in rough seas. The hull shape guarantees great stability and comfort when cruising, and at anchor, without the need for stabilisers. All in all, the design results in a boat for seafarers who want to navigate in comfort and safety in any sea condition. The careful attention paid to the shape of the hull also ensures low fuel consumption, resulting in excellent range and reduced CO2 emissions. Unlike other yachts with planing hulls, the Solaris Power is capable of cruising steadily and without roll even in displacement mode from 10 to 14 knots. Cutting-edge propulsion works in synergy with the shape of the hull and is the outcome of an intense collaboration between Victory Design and Volvo Penta. Since 2005, Brunello Acampora has been studying shapes that are optimised for the Inboard Propulsion System (IPS), discovering that azimuth pods generate significant performance improvements for planing hulls. Moreover, the compactness of the propulsion apparatus yields a noticeable increase in living space: the interiors of the 44 Open compare favourably with those of much bigger yachts and make the tender easy to stow, launch and haul. The absence of the rotating masses of the shaft line and the engine exhausts in the propeller pods reduce vibration and noise. Docking manoeuvres are also simplified thanks to the joystick and the azimuth pods, even with a single person at the controls.

NEW FRONTIERS It’s official – IPS has entered superyacht waters. Having revolutionised the under-100’ segment, Volvo Penta is now ready to conquer the big boat world with new designs on the drawing board to help it super-size! by Paola Bertelli

Below, the Wally Why200 and the Sanlorenzo SX112 (bottom page opposite) all have four D13 IPS 1350 units which is the current possible maximum. The Azimut S8 (top page opposite), on the other hand, sports three of the same units

systems. Designers also have more space to play with for owners and guests as the IPS require a considerably more compact engine room. “Then, on top of all that, there is the value of integration,” points out Piccione. “Having just a single interlocutor for the entire propulsion system is an advantage for both owner and captain. If a problem of any kind arises, Volvo will assist them with everything. The same applies for yards who only have to interact with one company”. From May of this year, IPS can also be equipped with the SCR or Selective Catalytic Reduction system which was developed to comply with IMO Tier III NOx emissions standards. “Even though the American Coast Guard has deferred enforcement of the latter until 2023, demand for SCR is growing constantly, partly because owners are increasingly conscious of the environment and partly because it increases the value of a boat. A boat fitted with SCR today will be sell at a higher price on the market in coming years which the standards come into force”. The joystick has played a pivotal role in the IPS revolution too as it really does make manoeuvring in tight spaces much, much easier. But is it as efficient on much larger yachts? “The joystick is even more efficient on bigger boats. Having a very broad beam and so having the transmissions a good distance from each other makes the joystick much, much more effective. We are working on integrating stern and bow drive functions into our system more because of efficiency than effectiveness – the IPS can be used to handle big yachts on its own but integrating the bow and stern thrusters would be a great way to get the same result and move less water and use the engines less”. Volvo Penta fits quadruple D13 IPS 1350 on larger yachts, the system’s current maximum potential. However, because yachts are just getting bigger and bigger, the company won’t stop there: “We are working on a new IPS-derived system that will further improve its characteristics and will be suitable for 24 to 60m craft,” says Piccione confidently. Volvo Penta also has some big news for displacement yachts up its sleeve too: “Until now, IPS has been at its best in terms of performance on planing boats but this new project targets semidisplacement and displacement craft”. www.volvopenta.com 181

We’re very proud of this ground-breaking solution as it means less maintenance for the windows, no risk of damaging the glass during side-on mooring and most of all provides maximum privacy both at anchor and in port”. THE ONE YACHT & DESIGN WAS THERE! Surrounded by the beauty of Venice, pampered by fine art and good food, we talked about design and the successes of an iconic brand with Luca Bassani and Stefano De Vivo photo by Guilain Grenier

Moments during the sea trials with the international press: the beauty of Venice (above, a special night-time visit to the basilica of San Marco) with Luca Bassani and Stefano De Vivo (centre, on board the new Wally)

T

he ONE Yacht & Design was invited on board Wally’s brandnew model, the wallypower58, on the occasion of its world debut against the exclusive backdrop of Venice. Once at sea we were able to appreciate its scorching performance and the myriad details that make Wally yachts unique design objects. “Like the first wallypower 118 motorcruiser, this model possesses clean, essential lines dominated by the dual hull chines, design air intakes and a bow that meets the water with a soft, sinuous line”, says Luca Bassani, founder and Chief Designer of the Wally brand, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024 and is now part of the Ferretti Group. “The plumb bow and deep V-hull provide extremely high performance – the boat can travel at 35 knots even in choppy seas – and work together to pierce the waves and ensure the craft remains stable. Our intention was to create a boat that was

186

aesthetically pleasing, well-suited for Mediterranean life and would always turn heads. Our clients are trend setters, people who feel happy when they have a product nobody else owns. For 25 years I’ve been free to create and innovate as an entrepreneur. Now it’s time to follow a path and I think the path followed by the Ferretti Group is a very stimulating one”. There’s no shortage of innovations on board – the magic porthole for example, which for the moment is a unique solution. “The owner of this first unit hasn’t see it yet, and I think she’ll be bowled over”, says Stefano De Vivo with pride. “But regardless of this new feature, this model immediately met with great success. The design was presented at last year’s Yachting Festival then we started to show it to various people, especially owners who were already our clients. They come from all over the world, and are all fascinated by Wally design and technology”.

[ TRENDS ] THE TRANSFORMERS

W

hen it appeared in 2003 it shook the nautical establishment to the core, as the industry had become used to a classic,

conservative style that brooked no design innovation. There was plenty of talk of ground-breaking solutions, but in fact the market wasn’t ready for the revolutionary wallypower 118. It sprang from the vision of Luca Bassani, a brilliant designer who had already developed countless innovations for the magnificent Wally sail yachts like the use of carbon fibre, the lifting keel, easy sailing and sail management by one person, the plumb bow, the first carbon fibre sails, the extensive use of glass and creating a close link between interior and exterior. The exterior design of the wallypower 118 (a single example is now jealously conserved by its owner, who uses it as a chase boat for his yacht) were inspired by the sleek lines of a stealth bomber with exceptional performance. It also resembles a spaceship, and even made an appearance in the science-fantasy film The Island. Even then it included many innovations from the Wally world, like the straight bow and open stern bringing the sea close to the deck, but especially the first drop-down sides. “In fact it wasn’t to increase the boat’s deck area – the idea was to give more visibility to the interior saloon which was lowered within the glass prism”, says Bassani, “This gave guests a view of the sea even when seated. But when we used them we noticed their dual function”. These solutions opened up the way for a new generation of “transformer” yachts. “On large yachts, our patented Balcony system opened up the owner’s cabin to the sea”, says Giorgio Besenzoni. “In this way the owner could manage the private spaces independently and enjoy an exclusive space. That was in 2009, and that experience gave us the know-how to apply these systems to moving sections of the hull and gunwales, creating usable spaces in

One of the strongest features of the Pardo E60 is the exterior aft area, where two drop-down side terraces create a relaxation area of 41 square metres. More sporty passengers will appreciate the gutsy Rebel 55 by Sacs, which when at anchor can be transformed into a comfortable floating platform. The latest model from Alia Yachts is the 27-metre Atlantico, with a fiercely aggressive look and drop-down wings aft which extend the large beach club area to create a real sea terrace.

CONGRESO NÁUTICO DI ANEN: OPTIMISM ON ALL FRONTS Our visit to Valencia this year also coincided with the Congreso Náutico di ANEN, a convention organised by the Asociacion Nacional de Empresas Nauticas, which represents the nautical sector in Spain and includes around 90% of its companies and operators, including yards like Astondoa. It was held in the Oceanografic, Valencia’s marine park. Various sector operators took the stage to speak about the Spanish and world markets and the country’s position in the nautical sector. This is an extremely positive moment for Spain’s yacht industry, a position made clear by the 95,000 patents taken out in 2021. Carlos Sanlorenzo, general secretary of the Association, told us that it is predicted that this will become a trend in 2022.
