We are now embarking on THEONEYacht&Design’s ninth year and looking back, I realise just how far we’ve come in that time.

When we presented the very first Ruby Issue at the Dubai Show in 2015, it became instantly clear that the magazine’s distinctive line, exclusive content compiled by our highly experienced team, graphic design and dazzling cover, set it apart from all the other magazines out there. That continues to be the case today.

Each year, we select a theme to base our four issues quarterly around: from gems in year one (Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Diamond) to materials in 2022 (Carbon, Aluminium, Kevlar and Titanium), and the Cashmere, Silk, Velvet and Skin that will be our leitmotifs for this year. Inside each issue, the graphic design always features the signatures and fonts of the materials used for inspiration. The four spines of the four annual issues also spell out their year of publication. This is what collectors love most about THEONEYacht&Designand is something that has seen them order so many back issues that we have simply run out! But have no fear, you can still find all the covers in the “Subscribe” section of our website.

Despite our quarterly rota, we always ensure our readers get absolutely up-to-the minute precise information about the endless work and research done by yards, designers, interior designers and sector professionals, to bring beautiful, functional products to the market. And always, always brimming with originality too. Speaking of which, we’ve also just introduced a new column about the sustainability goals that the aforementioned businesses are increasingly focusing on and working towards to help our Planet: Green Horizons is on page 20 of this issue.

Then, we had the launch of the www.theoneyd.com portal in 2017, which is updated on a daily basis with news from the yards and the wider luxury world, to monthly newsletters sent out to our database, the distribution of TheOneDigitalIssueand our communications drive on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.

In 2020, we published videos of our print articles linked to the QR codes in the magazines to allow them to be watched on any smartphone.

That said, we have much, much more to tell you all about the exclusive megayacht and design world in 2023, and so many different ways of doing that now too! Happy reading!

Heading NORD , looking up at the ink-black sky, I caught sight of POLARIS , the NORTHERN STAR and other PLATINUM -coloured, far away galaxies. I was eagerly waiting to see the perpetual ICE for the first time in my life. A few hours later the RISING SUN appeared and I finally caught a glimpse of the first sharp-edged iceberg on the HORIZONS III We approached closer, and there it stood – like a gigantic, glistening PODIUM . What a contrast: a few weeks ago, I was living the Italian BELLA VITA on CAPRI under the hot summer sun, and now, I was embracing the ELYSIAN -clear cold airs and facing a LIMITLESS white, which could not possibly be HERMITAGE to any living being. A couple of moments later, from my unique AVANTAGE , I spotted the ultimate sight, the ACE : a polar bear with her cubs. What a proud, mighty HUNTRESS she was. Who could not ENVY me for being here? This arctic wilderness was THE ONE place of my lifetime that I will never forget.

YACHTING AND THE NEW GENERATIONS!

I’m surveying a yacht being built at a well-known Italian yard and I’m noticing an incredible improvement in the organisation of production involving the inclusion of young technicians, designers and managers who are giving significant support to the yard’s bureaucratic and managerial machinery. Their enthusiasm and can-do attitude easily makes up for their lack of experience, which they are bound to accumulate over time.

Being an old hand in the yachting world and in constant contact with yards around the world, this striking change, linked to this period of frenetic world production, puts a smile on my face. A new breath of youth shaking up the worlds of design and production can give us a measure of confidence in our industry’s future.

Unfortunately, though, I’m seeing the opposite trend among the people who actually build the yachts, the specialist or unskilled employees of the yard or

suppliers. Without wanting to be discriminatory, those making up the workforce personnel come from other countries. This is especially the case in Italy and France. This is very worrying, as building a yacht isn’t about bureaucracy, it means working with the raw materials and assembling instruments, systems and equipment.

Returning, however, to the new recruits in management and design, the only real obstacles to their employment and career are the members of the old guard who won’t willingly step aside and make room for the new generations, and who use their position or power to create barriers to the progress of youngsters eager to enter the industry – and unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of that!

But the winds of change are now blowing so here’s to the new blood - tear down the barricades and give new energy to a yacht-building world that’s ready to welcome you with open arms!

REWARDING EXCELLENCE

is now one of the most important themes in the drive to save our planet, and it is an important area of interest for the yacht-building world. The issue was also the focus of attention at the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show, especially in the context of the Design Innovation Award. Now in its third edition, Confindustria Nautica and the I Saloni Nautici enthusiastically supported its introduction in 2020 to celebrate the event’s 60th anniversary. Its main aim is to promote excellence in the yacht-building industry by using the award-winning products to highlight the commitment shown by exhibitors at Italian and international boat shows with a successful background in research, innovation, aesthetic and technical quality, as well, of course, as sustainability.

Sustainability

“I was called in to give creative support to Boat Show’s new face, a sector that I’ve long been familiar with. I’ve always followed the Milan Salone del Mobile for work and the Genoa Boat Show for pleasure. Sailing is in my DNA: I’ve always had a boat and raced it. It’s a love with deep roots. I’ve been passionately interested in developments in the nautical world since

the 1980s, with a clear understanding of quality as regards both technology and interior design. This passion has also driven me, alongside the ADI (Industrial Design Assocation, which hosts the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award), to launch the marine components section to promote the industry and orientate it towards the ADI Index and

Mr. Saverio Cecchi, please, can you give us any previews of the next Genoa Boat Show, given that it will feature the new Waterfront?

Since it first took place the event has been organised with the support of Luisa Bocchietto, architect, designer, former president of Adi, Senator of the World Design Organization, sail yachtswoman and owner. Backed by her passion and experience in the yachting world and her prestigious career in design and architecture she has brought to bear all her experience in combining influences from a number of disparate fields.

From 2023 onwards the Boat Show will be able to take advantage of a new exhibition space, updated to international standards. This will give the area a new functional, spectacular layout, and will give the event a a further boost. It’s a project that’s all about excellence for an increasingly competitive event on an international level, with the introduction of new piers and the integration of over

This futuristic concept will enable the Genoa Boat Show to offer a unique platform that can provide a showcase for the exceptional levels of excellence that distinguish the international yacht-building industry.

Are there any special initiatives emphasising sustainability, given its importance in the yacht-building world?

Sustainability and innovation are crucial elements in the industry’s future. They closely concern research and design, and define the quality and excellence of Italy’s pleasure sailing sector. Every year the Genoa Boat Show provides an opportunity

the Compasso d’Oro. In 2020 the Genoa Boat Show asked me what we could do for the 60th anniversary celebrations and one of the ideas was to include a prize for accessories with extensive innovative content. They then asked me to draw up the selection rules and define the target for promotion. The idea was to create an independent, international award with a multidisciplinary vision that would not be linked to any organisation apart from the Boat Show”, says Luisa Bocchietto. “The focus is on sustainability, which for us is a crucial element in assessing good

for the entire sector to take stock and present the latest products and ideas. One event in particular, the Design Innovation Award, highlights the best products and the commitment shown by Italian and foreign exhibitors who have stood out in the context of research, innovation, aesthetic and technical quality and sustainability. Are there any revamps in the pipeline for the Design Innovation Award? Any new features we can expect?

The Design Innovation Award is a key project for Confindustria Nautica and I Saloni Nautici, and it will be a focus of attention, with an eye to further development.

The most important new elements in the 63rd Genoa International Boat Show will be

revealed during the traditional introductory press conference held in May.

What is the award today and what does it aim to be in the near future? What developments are planned?

This year’s award is the fourth, reinforcing its objective to support yacht-building excellence and encourage innovation, promoting the image of exhibitors at the Genoa International Boat Show by enabling them to display their latest products.

The Design Innovation Award is a window for the wider public and the world’s media, and enhances the conceptual and developmental potential of designers and producers in design, research, innovation and sustainability.

design. Design and innovation are linked to a correct relationship between form and function, and now sustainability plays a role, too. This also applies to innovation, from the point of view of materials technology and the functionality of certain components. Selecting the best products has been guided by criteria characterised by good design that also take account of form and functionality, which should exist in a coherent relationship. As said, another criterion is sustainability, which aims to promote, in all sectors, improvements in environmentally-respectful design and production. An international jury was set up, comprising seven experts from the among the winning exhibitors who have presented their innovative products and representatives from the worlds of yacht-building, journalism, universities or organisations from the sector,

Below, left, the living area of the Ferretti 860, winner in the motoryachts above 10 metres category for the elegance of its exterior lines and interior design reflecting the quality that is the brand’s hallmark. Special mentions went to the Y7 by Y Yachts, and to the Excess 14 (below) for achieving sailing performance through a careful study of shapes and materials, and to the Indoor Air Quality Monitoring for Yachting system by Permare

an owner or internationally-renowned figure from the world of art, business or culture and a representative from the steering committee. Prizes were awarded to the winner in each of nine categories. There were also three special prizes, for innovation, career and talent and an honourable mention. And the winners, chosen from 88 candidates, were announced during the Gala Dinner at the Genoa Aquarium’s - the Dufour 37 in the sail yachts up to 10 metres, the Grand Soleil 72 Performance in the sail yachts over 10 metres, the Ferretti 860 in the motor yachts over 10 metres, the SP110 by Sanlorenzo Yachts in the superyachts, the Prestige M48 in the multi-hulls, the SQ 240i by Capoforte Boats in the small craft and the Rio Yachts Inagua S in the RIBs. The Lascala gangway by Besenzoni was the winning accessory, while the innovation award

went to the Betty Buoys system. The Y Yachts Y7, Excess 14 and the Indoor Air Quality Monitoring for Yachting by Permare all gained special mentions. “We’re pleased that this year, too, competitors from outside Italy have taken part”, says Bocchietto, “With the Genoa Waterfront redevelopment in full swing (see page 154) and the upcoming logistical revamp of the Genoa Boat Show (that will be from 21st to 26th September 2023) we’re sure that the Innovation Design Award will gain a higher profile. Sustainability will also take centre stage and communicated even more vigorously. Sustainability isn’t a fashionable buzzword, it’s a key criterion for assessing good design. We’re seeing a change in the development of a new approach, not a fleeting trend, and this will become even more obvious in the years to come, in the yacht-building sector, too”.

DESIGNERS OFFERED A NEW RECYCLABLE COMPOSITE

Fibreglass is used for a wide range of applications in sport and industry, but it can’t be recycled efficiently and is an environmental pollutant. It is used not only by yacht builders but also for the manufacture of wind turbine blades, panels, pipes, tubing, campers, furnishing and many other products. Because it costs so much to dispose of fibreglass correctly, yachts built using this material are frequently left abandoned at end of life, in fields, marinas and on the sea bottom. A study carried out by the EU on yacht tourism revealed 80,000 craft

were abandoned across the region, and only 20,000 were disposed of properly. The innovative start-up Northern Light Composites (https://northernlightcomposites.com/, nlcompTM) was created to provide an answer to this serious problem. Founded in December 2019 by three sail yachting friends, Fabio Bignolini, Andrea Paduano and Piernicola Paoletti, nlcompTM, based in Monfalcone, is involved in the research and development of recyclable composite materials for purposes such as sail yacht building. The start-up has developed rComposite™, the world’s first and only recyclable composite. The use of a thermoplastic matrix, natural or mineral fibres and an Atlas HPE core by NMG Europe means that the nlcompTM composite has low environmental impact and sustainable end-of-life. To demonstrate that the rComposite™ is a market-ready alternative, nlcompTM has built a 7.69-metre sail racer, the EcoRacerTM, carrying out tests under stress during the past year. EcoRacerTM is the first yacht in the world built using thermoplastic resin and linen fibre, and also has recyclable sails, an electric motor and solar panels. EcoRacerTMha won the 2022 Italian Minialtura Class Championship on Lake Garda, beating forty fibreglass craft. During its three years of operations the start-up has presented four prototypes in all, (EcoPrimus, EcoOptimist, EcoRacerTM and EcoFoiler), winning a series of accolades throughout Europe (Design Innovation Award, World Sailing Sustainability Award, Velista dell’Anno and Foiling Awards).

WIDER TARGETS SUSTAINABILITY

Work continues apace on the construction of the new Wider production facility, a hightech structure on the Fano waterfront that reflects the yard’s sustainability philosophy. The first craft to be built in the new centre, which includes 350 metres of quayside and a travel lift, will be the WiderCat 92, the first in a series of motor catamarans designed by Luca Dini and the Wider style centre. Equipped with the Wider series hybrid propulsion system, five units have already been sold. “The new yard will be a fullyfledged innovation centre”, says Marcello Maggi, head of W-Fin Sarl, the company that holds 100% of Wider’s capital. “This is where all our future yachts will take shape, together with new green technologies and new ideas from start-uppers, with an intense awareness of environmental issues”. The facility was designed by architects

Alessandro Massari and Mauro Cavicchi of the Architettura Massari Design studio in Fano. “The brief I received from Wider was to create a structure based on sustainable principles, with an exciting design and capable of providing the type of functional efficiency associated with modern yachtbuilding construction”, says Massari. The outline of the 14-metre high building is interrupted by generous glazed surfaces to allow natural light to flood the interiors. The roof will be covered by solar panels and the power these generate will help the structure to be practically self-sufficient. The slats covering the external walls are in a composite of bamboo fibre and 100% recyclable plastic materials (Wood Plastic Composite Bamboo) that is resistant to humidity and UV rays and does not suffer deformation or fading over time.

WHAT’S NEW

A selection of new projects and concepts from the leading international shipyards and design studios that will grace the waves in the near future

Within two months of the project’s unveiling, the Italian Sea Group had sold not one but two new Panorama motoryachts. This “semi-custom 50-metre Admiral” collaboration with Piredda & Partners continues the new focus begun with Picchiotti’s Gentleman line, as The italian Sea Group CEO Giovanni Costantino, confirmed: “This strategy allows us to expand sales while avoiding compromising the Group’s design capacity by not involving the important design teams committed to the large custom-made yachts that represent the company’s core business”. The resulting classy all-Italian beauty has a timelessly graceful profile with masterful forms, lines and functional solutions. At 499GT, the new Admiral

will also eat up those ocean miles with gusto. A lack visual barriers and sublime interior-exterior flows produce a sense of ongoing natural dialogue between all of the large, beautifully detailed spaces. Inside, sophisticated décor consummately pairs fine wood, stone and rough metals. The Panorama accommodates up to 12 guests, with four capacious suites on the main deck and a VIP on the lower, which can convert to a TV room and is flanked by a proper fully-equipped gym. The owner’s apartments on the upper deck offer open views on three sides as well as overlooking a private deck forward. The two Admiral Panorama models are pencilled in for delivery in 2025. theitalianseagroup.com

Presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Pardo GT75 is a new crossover with exteriors and interiors by Nauta Design. Echoing the GT52’s crisp styling, comfort and performance, this flagship model comes in Tender, Garage and Beach versions, and GT or T-top. However, its modular design means that all use same hull and deck moulds. The 23m weekend runabout slots between the Walkaround and Endurance lines, optimizing volumes and spaces for very comfortable extended cruising. The Tender Garage version has an aft deck on three cascading levels

(main saloon, sunbed, sofa integrated between stairs). Two bulwarks wings open out at sunbed height and also appear in the Beach version in which a sliding glass panel offers direct access to the aft deck from the panoramic master. The open T-top version is in the same spirit as the Pardo 50. The standard “galley down” layout has two double en suite cabins, while the “galley-up” is more family-oriented with four cabins below. White oak veneers and lacquered accents mix with natural finishes while teak deck planking runs into the main deck saloon. www.pardoyachts.com

TwentyTwenty-Two was a fantastic year for Baglietto culminating in the sale of a record eighth yacht, a T52, just before Christmas. The hybrid steel and aluminium beauty by Francesco Paszkowski Design was also the eighth example of the displacement model to sell. Scheduled for delivery in 2025, Hull #10255 is, like her siblings, a delight for the modern owner with massive deck areas, superb water access and efficient hybrid propulsion. Slender, flowing lines draw together the brand’s past and present, lending the T52 a strong stylish personality. The original open stern with three-level beach club is a signature of Baglietto’s new direction, while a clever up-down floor system extends deck space when the attractive pool is not in use. Floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides of the upper deck create an allweather conversation and dining area, and the 24m long sundeck, another Baglietto hallmark, is unmatched on a vessel of these dimensions too. Powered by twin Caterpillar C32s, the T52 makes 16 knots at full throttle and cruises at 11.

The build has begun on the new Rossinavi 43m hybridelectric Sea Cat unveiled at Miami Design Week 2021. Sporting solar panels and a big battery pack, the extremely quiet, eco-friendly Sea Cat has four operating modes: full-electric one-day trip, 90% full-electric multi-day trip, 80% full-electric transatlantic trip, and in-port solar self-sufficient hibernation mode with any excess donated to the marina/villa, etc. AI monitors onboard habits to suggest further energy savings without impacting guest routines. Fulvio de Simoni penned the surprisingly sleek

exteriors and Meyer Davis of New York has layered natural textures and materials inspired by sunlight, sparkling seas, crisp blue skies and golden sand in a sustainable interior that accentuates the open-plan layout and elegant exterior curves. The result is a masterclass in warm, laid-back ethical luxury travel. The wide saloon, master suite and sun deck are super-generous thanks to that big beam. Eight to 10 guests enjoy four same-size charter-friendly hull cabins and there’s even a pool in the main deck cockpit. www.rossinavi.it

La Vie is a joint project from the Leonardo Santi Design Studio, the Mengi Yay yard and her owner. Inspired by the studio’s Elegantiae concept, her clean, spare lines yield a chicly modern aesthetic. Light wood walls and white ceilings feel wonderfully bright, while Calacatta marble detailing lends character. Lighting is used architecturally to craft different scenarios: long LED strip lights in the saloon lend the space a dynamic modernism, for instance. Deftly paired dark and light woods offer the rich yet warm, welcoming ambience the owner wanted

for his family. Art plays a pivotal role aboard with backlit frames showcasing the owner’s handpicked pieces in the main saloon and lobbies. This was a suggestion given by Leonardo Santi Design studio, creating perfect niches to stimulate the client to select beautiful artworks. La Vie feels much larger than she actually is, punching well above her weight with four cabins on her lower deck, a master suite on the main, and two further guest cabins plus a small study and saloon on the upper. www.leonardosantidesign.com

This hugely versatile go-anywhere super-cruiser brims with eco-credentials: leading-edge electric propulsion with a folding propeller, lithium ion battery banks charged by hydrogeneration, and an efficient heat recovery system as well as plans to install solar. The dark metallic bronze hull clothes an original interior design that combines the structure with rice paper and walnut lantern lighting in the corners of cabins, walnut furniture and cleverly juxtaposed units, to create what the yard describes as “warm minimalism” with a “craft” vibe. The versatile rig can set a pinhead main for cruising and a powerful square top sail for racing an all-carbon structure, and there is even a telescopic keel, so although this beauty is a family boat, she will also do her owner proud in the big international regattas. Another standout feature is the multi-role transom, which serves as a beach club, boarding area and tender retrieval ramp. www.balticyachts.fi

The Silvestri Marmi company’s Silvestri Art Design brand works with international artists, designers and architects to create projects using natural materials like marble, wood, metal, glass and leather. The interiors of the Marriott Hotel Tirana reflect this type of collaboration – the lobby has Grigio Apuano marble walls with relief work and split Pietra Nera walls, the reception desks are in Calacatta marble with brass inserts and a top in fluted, hot-lacquered matt finish metal. Suites, coffee tables and lifts are in Calacatta extra marble from the same block used for the three desks.

Custom Line’s new flagship has a sleek, powerful and contemporary profile. The third yacht in the planing series with interiors and exteriors by Francesco Paszkowski, it’s a 42-metre work of maritime art with flowing spaces and exceptional on-board comfort, an expression of meticulous design, innovative engineering and Italian flair by

45

t’s not true that today’s megayachts are all floating villas – some are much more, displaying details and architectural solutions that enhance liveability while conforming to the requirements of maritime voyages, in style, safety and with respect for the yacht’s surroundings. The new Custom Line 140’ is all that, also expressed by the sleek, powerful profile of the contemporary hull. The various design details and shape of the windows contribute to the dynamic appeal of the yacht’s lines even when at anchor. The Custom Line 140’ was developed by a team of seasoned professionals. In fact it’s the third Custom Line bearing the signature of the Francesco Paszkowski Design studio with the Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee and Engineering Management team. The designer created interiors and exteriors, for which he enjoyed the collaboration Margherita Casprini and the Custom Line Atelier. The yacht is 42.61 metres long and has an 8.54 metre beam, and its spaces and volumes make an immediate impression. Laid out over four decks, the Custom Line 140’ is intended for socialising and conviviality.

“The owner loved the project right from the start”, says Stefano de Vivo, CCO of the Ferretti Group, “Especially the privacy provided on board, with separate guest and crew areas”. The exterior areas all feel like open-air lounges with comfy seats, tables and sunpad areas for full enjoyment of the seagoing experience. There are many of these alfresco spaces, starting with the beach area opening out onto the sea. This also welcomes guests arriving on the tender, just as we did. Then there are those on the forward and aft upper deck – the aft area enters into a perfect dialogue with the panoramic sky lounge, measuring over 25 square metres. With sliding doors and full-height windows that open on both sides it can be transformed into an airy veranda. The unique, special sundeck covers over 70 m² and is divided into three areas, but these are perfectly combined to provide a 360° view.

The great comfort and practicality of the interior spaces make an immediate impression when stepping on board. The headroom of over two metres and the uninterrupted spatial flow of the interlinked spaces make the layout of this superyacht extremely satisfying. The appeal is enhanced by the choice of materials and myriad details of the interior décor, which communicate a refined, never strident elegance. The main saloon is accessed from the cockpit via a glass partition that opens to create a single space. The interior of the 45 m² space is divided into a living and dining area, a formal, elegant setting. The colour palette is mainly defined by the materials used for surfaces and furnishings, which are custom made or selected from Minotti’s indoor and outdoor collections – natural leather for the furniture, walls and ceilings, dark oak for the floor and ivory for the leather panelling. They appeal to all the senses. There are many mirrors, even in the ceiling, complemented by the original rectangular pattern in diamondcut leather, expanding the space. Large full-height windows create fresh, bright, light-filled spaces that provide direct contact with the sea and welcome cooling marine breezes. The lobby allows the layout to breathe, emphasising the concept of spatial fluidity. It forms a connection between upper and lower deck, with the minimal stairs and blown Murano glass hanging lights by Venini. It’s also a nodal area between the main saloon and owner’s suite forward. The 44 m² owner’s suite comprises cabin with central bed and office corner overlooking the sea, hydraulically-operated terrace activated at the touch of a button and double walk-in wardrobe. There is also a double owner’s bathroom in Orobico marble, a 12 m² space dedicated to body care. The dual shower, washbasins and central bath are in Etruscan marble. Many details stand out, like the stylish illuminated display niches and showers or the light cannulated wood cabinetry, a theme repeated as a motif in the VIP bedheads and guest cabin walls together with metal mesh and glass panels. They reflect not only the requirements of a refined elegance and design but also the skill of the Custom Line artisans who them. Guests are accommodated on the lower deck in three VIP cabins and a guest cabin with twin beds, each with en-suite bathroom that replicates the main deck colours, materials and motifs in an impactful stylistic coherence. Here, too, natural light filters through the large hull windows. Everywhere on board the senses are in contact with the sea. www.customline-yacht.com

The Custom Line 140’ is the largest yacht the brand has ever built. It is 42.61 metres long, has an 8.54 metre beam and a displacement of just under 400GT, but innovative weight-saving technology and the use of carbon fibre and hybrid materials enable exceptional performance – the yacht has a maximum speed of 21.5 knots with a cruising speed of 18 knots. With its sleek, powerful profile and contemporary style, it has a decidedly sporty personality. Opening, the owner’s suite balcony that can be deployed independently

The Custom Line 140’ captures the attention immediately with its spaces and volumes – the exteriors measure more than 200 m² and the interior areas exceed 300 m². Exterior Design Francesco Paszkowski Design

The brief provided by Custom Line was focussed on a restyling of the planing lines. We sought to maintain the brand’s continuity and tradition, emphasising distinctive elements like the extent and functionality of the exterior spaces, a significant theme developed with great success by the shipyard. In creating a combination of past and future we introduced new stylistic elements from other design worlds like the automotive industry and residential architecture, carefully enhancing shapes and volumes through furnishing and equipment choices in line with the most cutting-edge contemporary living trends. The many distinctive elements of the Custom Line 140’ include the streamlined, powerful hull profile, the shape of the windows with the square upper deck cut-out, the spoiler sheltering the external areas of the aft main and upper deck and the hard top, conferring even greater aggressiveness and dynamism even when the yacht is at anchor. A further eye-catching feature is the Y-shaped uprights of the guardrails, first conceived for the entire range but then adapted only by the 140’, emphasising the

50

yacht’s role as flagship for the brand. This element comes from the world of car design and gives a different reading to the gunwale, now completely cut out and replaced by a steel pulpit.

Elements retained from Custom Line tradition and the new stylistic features restate the line’s dynamic, sporty character. The Custom Line 140’ is a natural evolution of the Custom Line world: it takes its place in a story we think is extremely stimulating, one where we’ve sought to combine the various proposals to revamp the line and give it the style, functionality and technical value that have determined Custom Line’s success.

The main challenge facing our team – the studio and yard – was to identify with a whole series of owners, not just a single one, and to have a vision that could take in the ideas and desires of different clients. We drew inspiration from the automotive industry and transferred it to the world of yacht design. The unity of the team in this project is the key to the creation of this line”.

Custom Line develops over four decks, each of which maintains the brand’s continuity and traditions, which place size and functionality of the spaces at the heart of the design. It is an established theme for the brand, one that the yard has developed with great success

Interior Design Francesco Paszkowski Design, in collaboration with Margherita Casprini

The style of the interiors is inspired by luxury residential furnishing and contemporary living. Reflecting the exterior concept, the interiors embody one of the key concepts of the entire project – continuity between exterior and interior. The large floor-to-ceiling windows play an important role, emphasising the contact with sea and increasing the flow of natural light into the interiors. This can also be seen in the guest cabins, especially the two VIP cabins with beds placed transversely, facing the windows. As always, the choices of materials and colours throughout are coherent, based on our suggestions in the overall context of the project. They were then developed by the yard to reflect market requirements first of all, and then the owner’s personal tastes. The suggestions we made were fully in line with the owner’s preferences. On board there are architectural elements that are very close to residential solutions – striking features include the suspended structure of the interior staircase linking the decks and the external staircase connecting the sun deck and upper deck, stylistically consistent and reflecting the idea of avoiding the creation of visual obstructions and generating an intense feeling of lightness. All the spaces on the Custom Line 140’ display a combination of woods, with oak flooring, lacquered panels, leather on the ceilings and marbles – polished Orobico brushed yellow Etruscan - in the bathrooms to lend a contemporary feel to the décor, which combines iconic Italian brands like Minotti, Porada, Flexform, Casamilano, Gallotti & Radice and Maxalto with custommade furnishings, from fabrics and leathers for the bedheads to glass. The project was inspired by a strong interaction between exteriors and interiors and developed with a great deal of consistency between these two areas. In our opinion all the social spaces, outside and in, are pleasant environments that above all enable guests to feel in contact with the yacht’s surroundings wherever they are on board”.

54
Above, a VIP cabin with transverse bed is stylistically coherent with the rest of the yacht. It takes up the theme of back-mirrored cannulated wood also used for the bedhead in the owner’s suite. The Custom Line 140’ has a planing hull capable of sailing in great comfort for 2,000 miles, reaching a top speed of 21 knots and consuming 15 litres per nautical mile. The limited draught enables the yacht to navigate shallower waters

The Shipyard Stefano de Vivo, CCO Ferretti Group

The owner, already a Custom Line client who is loyal to our standards and products, expressed a desire for a larger yacht in the Custom Line range. He was attracted by the Custom Line 140’ not only for its majestic grandeur but also the complexity of the design and the attention paid to the smallest detail. We’re talking about exterior spaces of more than 200 m² and interiors exceeding 300 m², laid out over four decks where areas intended for socialising create a coherent continuity between exteriors and interiors. The result is total harmony between the design solutions and surface finishes throughout the yacht.

The owner wanted a larger yacht without changing his way of experiencing it. Starting from a two-deck yacht he arrived at the Custom Line 140’, with four decks and the opportunity to have a panoramic saloon and enjoy greater privacy. As well as being the new flagship, the Custom Line 140’ was a real challenge as regards technology and volumes, making it an extremely valuable naval project. We’ve used innovative technologies, hybrid materials and

carbon fibre, enabling us to decrease the weight and keep displacement under 400 GT. For the yard, the Custom Line 140’ is a unique work of naval art, an exclusive superyacht where total personalisation of all the interior furnishings and decorative elements have enabled the owner to express his personality and aesthetic tastes. Our efforts have been rewarded by the reception the yacht received at the Cannes Yachting Festival and then the Monaco Yacht Show.”

SEDUCTIVE POWER

As plush and elegant as a Bentley and manoeuvrable as a fighter aircraft, the Dassault Falcon 6X seduces with on-board comfort and exceptional performance

[ FLY ] 58

59

There are a thousand reasons to love this aircraft, but if you’re already a Dassault aficionado you’ll be charmed even further by the interiors and the ability to land almost anywhere. If you’re not a Dassault client, the Falcon 6X is an excellent reason to become one. Owners and pilots will love its performance and ease of handling. Just one warning – certification and entry into service will take place in early 2023, with first deliveries six months later. Every new Falcon model offers improvements over previous versions, and this one boasts the tallest, most spacious cabin in its category, with unique features and details. The cabin is 6.5 feet high and 8.5 feet wide (198 x 290 cm) with a volume of 1,843 cubic feet (52 square metres). It provides the comfort of a cabin altitude of 3,900 feet (1,180 m) at 41,000 ft (almost 12.5 km) and the opportunity to choose from a range of interior layouts catering for eight to fourteen passengers. The windows are larger than those on the previous Falcons and allow even more light into the cabin, but the most striking new feature is the skylight in the galley section, a detail inherited from Dassault’s project 5X, which the company cancelled because of development problems with the Safran Silvercrest engines. Now the aircraft, renamed the 6X, has a longer fuselage and is equipped with more powerful Pratt & Whitney PW812D engines. The 6X reflects market demand for larger aircraft offering the possibility of long-range operations. In terms of numbers, this means at maximum take-off weight the aircraft needs a runway of at least 5,840 ft (1,800 metres). It can travel a maximum of more than 10,000 kilometres across Europe or the USA without refuelling at speeds between Mach 0.8 and 0.9. Flying at the top speed of Mach 0.9, will, of course, mean a reduction in range.

A glance at the spec sheet shows that the Falcon 6X carries 33,700 lbs of fuel, which provides a range of 5,500 nm at Mach 0.8 with eight passengers and three crew on board. Passengers can while away the flight by relaxing in a proper double bed, work using the hyper-connection or partake of an elegant meal. Another observation – the interior design is in European style, without the oversized, over-stuffed armchairs so beloved of American manufacturers. The price of the Falcon, around 53 million dollars, depends on the equipment chosen, but we know that compared to aircraft by other constructors this French brand’s products retain their value better. All this leads to management costs for 400 flight hours a year of around 8,100 dollars per hour. To sum up, for passengers it’s the flying version of a Bentley, for pilots it’s a civilian – and much more comfortable – version of the Rafale fighter, with plenty of technology to reduce the crew workload, starting with 4th version of the EASy Cockpit system with the combined vision (synthetic and infrared) of FalconEye and various improvements over 6X’s bigger brother, the 8X – though this is still an exceptional aircraft - starting with an electrics system based on alternating current but especially a flight control system employing flaperon mobile surfaces (flaps that also act as ailerons), which provides great control precision. It’s not surprising, as Dassault’s Fly-by-wire system has proved to be an amazing innovation since its introduction on the 7X. If you then need to make the most of the aircraft’s manoeuvrability there’s the direct control law, without protection for the flight envelope and reactions similar to those in an aircraft with mechanical or hydraulic controls. But only use these in emergencies - you don’t want to spill your aperitif! www.dassaultfalcon.com

Some cars have become motorsport legends, remembered decades on not so much for their drivers, performance, the awards they won or the badges they sport, but the colours they wear. More than any other feature of the cars in question, this sporting livery has remained crystallized in the memory of fans who line the track side or pack the stands as they wait for their favourite to roar past. Their image remains potent, and while the sound of their engines may have faded a little over time the thousands of archive photos depicting them ensure their memory remains as vivid as ever. Such cars were often made famous by a sponsor, a phenomenon especially common with Porsche, a brand active in a range of events, and one that has enabled many of its models to enter the collective imagination and achieve immortality. Three examples above all - the 917, a car developed for endurance races, which entered history wearing the Gulf colours, the 935 “Moby Dick”, remembered for its Martini Racing colours, and the 953 that won the Paris-Dakar in 1984 wrapped in colours that are well-known in the motorsport world, lent for the occasion by a tobacco brand before the existence of laws banning the advertising of cigarette brands. Now, almost 40 years on, we are treated to the arrival of a very special limited edition of the 911, the 911 Dakar. This model, manufactured in a run of just 2,500 vehicles, is based on a concept that according to legend was developed ten years ago over a restaurant table.

Offered in a limited edition of just 2,500 examples that are sure to become rapidly appreciating collector’s items, the 911 Dakar is at its best with the optional Rallye Design package, a sporting aesthetic look that reproduces the graphics worn by the Stuttgart-made vehicle that won the 1984 Paris-Dakar rally. from the motorsport world onto a series-produced model, but the desire to create an icon –the 911 – in a crossover version. A daring notion, bordering on blasphemy, that matured and eventually came to fruition over the space of a decade.

The 911 Dakar, whose aesthetic interpretation is an optional extra, forming part of the Rallye Design package, was introduced in late 2022 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It’s a revamped sports car whose ground clearance has been increased by 50 mm over the base model, a distance that can be increased by a further 30 mm thanks to a special lifting mechanism that can be operated at speeds of up to 170 km/h. A perfect off-road feature, together with the specially-made Pirelli tyres and electronics making it possible to engage off-road mode directly from a selector on the steering wheel. A further array of high-spec features includes a fixed spoiler and bonnet in CFRP (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic), larger wheel arches and weight savings generated by stripping out the rear seats. These important details enable the 480 Hp, 570 Nm six-cylinder twin turbo engine to power the Porsche 911 Dakar to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, with a selflimited top speed of 240 km/h. www.porsche.com.

Brunello Acampora founded Victory Design in 1989 and since then has led a work group creating yachts for prestigious companies like Isa Yachts, Cougar Marine, Azimut and many Ferretti Group brands, including Pershing, Bertram, Riva, Ferretti Yacht and CRN. Of Italian origin but with Anglo-Saxon training, the cutting edge is the key to his designs, a blend of functionality and performance enhanced by strikingly elegant forms

Renato “Sonny” Levi, regarded as the father of motor yachting. He was my mentor. At the age of nineteen I left Naples to study Yacht and Boat Design at Southampton. I chose to go there mainly because it was near Levi’s house on the Isle of Wight. He developed a liking for this young Neapolitan who had read all his books and knew all his designs. He invited me to lunch one Sunday every month so I could spend a few hours with him”.

CREATIVE MINDS ]

Eclectic, vivacious, cultured and passionate, Brunello Acampora, founder of Victory Design, grew up surrounded by style and beauty, instilling in him a desire to seek new forms of elegance in the yacht-building industry. Both parents became internationally known for their work in Italian ready-to-wear haute couture, emulating French prêt-à-porter. The list of family friends included Walter Albini, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani and Mariuccia Mandelli of Krizia. “They all placed great emphasis on the world of aesthetics and shapes”, says the designer. “They also had wonderful homes and we made some lovely journeys. This environment also included some beautiful yachts. I fell in love with the idea definitively when my father bought the Italcraft Drago, which led me to discover

Knowing exactly what he wanted, in 1989 at the age of only twentythree Acampora founded Victory Design. It was originally based in Turin, but now its offices are in Naples and London, and the designer divides his time between the two cities. A career spanning almost 35 years with commissions from prestigious clients like Isa Yachts, Cougar Marine, Azimut and many Ferretti Group brands, including Pershing, Bertram, Riva, Ferretti Yacht and CRN. “I’ve never limited Victory Design to a certain type of yacht”, says Acampora, who is especially proud of the yachts that marked the repositioning of a brand, like the first Italian-style lobster boat for Mochi (before the company was bought out by the Ferretti Group), the Mochi Dolphin, a much sought-after model on the pre-owned market, or the yachts he designed for Solaris when it took the decision to enter the motor yacht world.

How does he achieve results like this? “I learnt to design in the traditional way, but I’m not a nostalgia freak. I’ve always sought to gain access to the best technology available, because I think it’s our job to invent the future. All this, though, should be balanced by a very important gift – intuition. Technology is only a verification tool. My method is TotalDesign – you can’t bring together the work of so many specialists if you haven’t a vision of the whole. A yacht should always be beautiful, when it’s under way and when it’s at anchor. It should leave a beautiful wake. This goes hand in hand with an

74 [ CREATIVE MINDS: IGOR LOBANOV ]

From designing cars, aircraft and then yachts, this Russian designer’s creativity is inspired by a whole range of influences, including input from his artist wife. The result is a sculptural style where fluidity and curved lines shape new biomimetic architectural forms, like those of the A96 by Arcadia Yachts

Igor Lobanov’s career was originally nurtured by his passion for cars and aircraft. He has several degrees, first in maths then car design at Turin and Coventry. He gained a master’s in transport design and began work in the car industry before meeting a superyacht owner in 2003, an encounter that caused him to change direction and take up yacht design. This couldn’t really be described as his first love – he was born in Ufa, a populous city 1,350 km east of Moscow and 2,000 km from the

Black Sea. The first time he saw the sea was when he was two years old, and he did not do so again until he was a grown man of twenty-four. “I visited Europe for the first time in 1998 and I realised I wanted to carry on studying. I contacted Bertone, Pininfarina and other leading companies in the sector asking where I could train. In the end I chose the IED in Turin”, he says. In 2007 he founded the Lobanov Design studio, based in Barcelona since 2016. He now lives in the city together

75

with his artist wife, Yulia, whose strikingly modern, sculptural work is a strong influence on Lobanov’s love for the beautiful. All in all, this diverse background taking in transport, art, interiors and architecture has helped Lobanov become an internationally respected yacht designer. His first important projects focussed on exterior design, but now his work takes in all aspects of his subjects. The first of his most famous yachts, mainly large models built with Oceanco, is the 85-metre St. Princess, delivered in 2013. The second, Jubilee, was handed over in 2017. This charming 110-metre design has won a number of awards, placing Lobanov among the elite of international yacht designers. “I like to play with the relativity of sensations. With the Jubilee we managed to create the impression of six decks, while in fact there are only three, and we made a 110-metre yacht seem more like 140 in length from a distance”. The same optical effect has been achieved with the new Mangustas by Overmarine, and

here for the first time Lobanov has also designed the interiors. Their more restrained dimensions can be compared to those of the most recent project completed with Arcadia Yachts, the A96. Over 29 metres in length, it features huge volumes of over 400 square metres that embrace a new well-being concept involving an authentic link with nature, achieved through a number of stratagems, the first being the enormous sliding glass walls that enable interiors and exteriors to coalesce into a single space. “Both brands have their own powerful language. For Mangusta it was crucial to breathe new life into this Italian legend’s old designs. With the Mangusta 165 we succeeded in creating a totally unexpected interior space. I hope we’ve managed to achieve the same effect with Arcadia, a brand I’ve always wanted to work with. With their first yacht I think they introduced a revolutionary concept that can provide double the space in the same dimensions”. The ever-present desire for wellbeing in our everyday lives lies at the heart of the A96, designed for Arcadia Yachts. into almost VIP-style accommodation – every available space has been maximised, with the beds turned towards the huge window. “The interior we created is a little harder for the yard to make, with oval and elliptical shapes and natural materials. These give the impression of a much more opulent yacht, but one that’s different, with a luxury that’s refined, not vulgar”. Curved lines are a hallmark of his work. “Fluidity and continuity are natural elements on all vessels. For me yachts should resemble animals that inhabit the seas, like the orca, which has rounded, natural lines”. The yacht, which has been designed to establish a permanent presence in markets beyond the Mediterranean, especially the USA, will be presented at Cannes in 2023.

iving shape to speed” is a challenge that AB Yachts, backed by almost thirty years of experience, has risen to magnificently. The dynamic lines of its yachts, embodiments of speed, generate an adrenalin rush that reflects the innovations making the yard the natural home of performance.

The AB 100 Elegance takes this a step further, taking full advantage of the creative energy displayed by the team involved in the creation of this 30.50-metre yacht. The aim was to develop and extend the complex equilibrium of crucial elements and integrate performance with maritime qualities, highlighting comfort in all its sensory variety. While the yard’s technical office engineers developed the naval architecture and technology, interior design was handled by Marco Casamonti/Archea Associati. The decision to bring in a large

international studio (Archea’s portfolio includes the Cantina Antinori in Italy’s Chianti region and the Liling Ceramic Museum in China) and appoint one of its founding partners, Marco Casamonti, as art director of the Next Yacht Group, emphasises the powerful creative impulse that drives this Group, whose heritage draws on the traditions of the AB Yachts, Maiora and CBI Navi brands.

Experiencing the AB100 Elegance means sailing at over fifty knots in extreme comfort and with exceptional efficiency. The yacht is powered by a gutsy MJP hydrojet propulsion unit with three 2,000 MAN engines providing a cruising speed of over 45 knots with sprints over 50 knots. Ride comfort is ensured by a Seakeeper gyroscopic stabiliser that is equally effective when the yacht is under way or at anchor. The yacht’s profile is defined by soft, dynamic shapes – the hull’s sleek, thrusting shapes harmonise with the receding lines of the compact superstructure,

82

Cutting through the sea at over 50 knots, the AB 100 Elegance displays the exceptional performance and its promise of exceptional comfort and elegance. The yacht is 30.50 metres long with a beam of 6.8 metres. This generous width creates large spaces and has made it possible to offer a variety of layouts. This example has four guest cabins and galley on the lower deck, with a living area and helm station on the main deck

emphasising its breath-taking speed. The main and lower decks feature large windows, and there are generous open-air spaces – a lounge with saloon and sun loungers forward and on the large fly deck, and aft a beach area furnished with an ample C-shaped sofa. It is connected to the cockpit by two side staircases on the transom. This leads into the saloon and becomes an integral part of it when the sliding door retracts into the deck structure. The modular nature of the project provides a basis for extensive personalisation.

The saloon of the AB100, which made its debut at the Cannes and Monaco Boat Shows and is depicted in this article, features a series of freestanding elements by Edra in a setting designed as a sophisticated loft, furnished with a handful of pieces with a strong personality like the two sofas from the On the Rocks collection with sculptural, geometric forms, and the Cicladi coffee tables with alabaster top. In the dining area,

the Egeo table, made with a slab of dark glass with irregular edges, is surrounded by soft, embracing Blue Velvet chairs. A partition separates the saloon from the wheelhouse. Its mirrored surface reflects the sea, drawing it into the interior on all four sides of the saloon and enhancing the wonderful charm of life on the water. To the right of the partition the stairwell takes advantage of the light coming through the windshield and reflects it into the lower deck, the location of four guest cabins, two crew cabins and the galley. Grey is the dominant colour in the day area and on the lower deck, with copper notes and details. The four guest cabins host with art installations by Francesca Pasquali – each cabin features a slogan that has the impact of a statement and which, when all four are read together, reflect, as Marco Casamonti points out, the deepest meaning its creators sought to give the yacht - life is art, art is life, art is playing, playing is art. www.abyachts.com

Yacht Concept Giacomo Benelli, Head of Sales Next Yacht Group

The new Elegance version of our AB 100 models is based on market demand and our owners’ requirements, with a stronger interaction between interiors and exteriors. The result is an open space, a loft looking out onto the sea with closely connected saloon, cockpit and beach area. We’ve also added domotics, worked on the windows and a new paint spectrum that can fulfil all colour requests, with maximum reliability. In the exterior we’ve carried out a subtle restyling of several shapes, with touches that create an even more aggressive, sensual and elegantly sporty look. The strong points of our craft are their tank-tested waterlines and deadrise, optimised for all sea conditions, especially the most challenging. Performance is everything for us – and by performance we don’t just mean speed but also efficiency, manoeuvrability, comfort and safety. It’s a package we can’t split up and that more and more clients want to discover and stay with.

Including increasingly prestigious elements that also have an impact on the yacht’s weight presented a significant challenge – we increased the amount of teak, especially in the interiors, the kitchen is the kind of well-equipped space that can be found only in some of clients’ homes, the mirror TVs give greater depth to the interiors but add weight, so we had to compensate for this extra weight by using more carbon fibre and honeycomb, together with increasingly sophisticated production processes. The real jewel is the engine room. We’ve used cutting-edge technology and have designed systems that always take two factors into account – safety, and maximum operability and ease of maintenance. Skilful artisanal production, paying attention to every detail, means we’ve been able to combine every element with great success. AB100 Elegance is perfect as a day boat, weekend boat or as a boat it’s possible to spend many months on board. It’s suitable for families or for parties and celebrations. It’s also an ideal megayacht support boat (“phantom boat”). It can be brash and sensual, sober and athletic, but is always elegant and unique.

A sporty yacht with generous outdoor spaces. The beach club area is furnished with a C-shaped sofa, and behind this is a float-in garage for toys and tender. It connects to the cockpit via two side staircases. Access to the large fly deck (opposite page, bottom) is provided by stairs in the cockpit (opposite page, top) with its simple, airy design. When the slide-away door is open the main deck saloon and cockpit become a single space

Interior Design

Marco Casamonti, Art Director Next Yacht Group

Our aim for the AB 100 Elegance was to combine extreme comfort and precision within a yacht offering exceptional performance, so we sought to create unprecedented softness and comfort in the interiors. On the lower deck, for example, the walls are padded and lined with fabric, a choice that, compared to the classic use of wood, has also enhanced the yacht’s sound insulation properties without adding weight. We had an exceptional amount of space at our disposal for the saloon and we transformed this into a large loft. And how do you furnish a loft? With great freedom. We studied flexible configurations, and for this yacht we chose items by Edra, the lovely Egeo table, whose black glass top evokes the coastline of Aegean Sea islands. For example, the owner can furnish it according to his or her own preferences, which is very unusual for a sporty yacht. The partition we’ve installed on this unit, to provide greater privacy for owner and guests, can be eliminated, and the kitchen on the lower deck can be shifted to the main deck. For the AB 100 Elegance we wanted to add, not take away, combining its ability to sail at very fast speeds with the opportunity to enjoy great comfort, offer great flexibility in the furnishings and layout and create a space that can express a lifestyle. That’s why we called in Francesca Pasquali, an artist I like a great deal, to create installations for the yacht. I wanted to give a renaissancestyle vision to the interiors, combining the theme of design with that of art and poetry. An architect’s work involves study and experimentation. For us, the nautical world is another way of experimenting with spaces, construction details, of working with an extremely skilful workforce. Attention to detail is more extreme on a yacht than in a house. For AB Yachts we’re now working on a revamp and extension of the range, which will go up to a length of 150’. Our mission isn’t to change the exceptional features offered by these yachts, but to improve and refine them through a slow, constant evolution. The new model currently under construction, which we’ll see at Cannes 2023, will present something revolutionary while remaining true to the brand’s traditional qualities, and in this sense we’re returning to the renaissance idea, moving between modernity and tradition.

The yacht combines performance, design and art – all four guest cabins feature an installation by Francesca Pasquali above the bed. The works are made using coloured plastic straw and metallic writing, with slogans like life is art, art is life, art is playing and playing is art, which express the meaning and purpose behind this yacht. Opposite page, the saloon is a refined loft looking out onto the sea, furnished with a small but striking selection of items from the Edra collections

87

The main deck wheelhouse. The yacht, made in fibreglass composite and carbon fibre, is equipped with a powerful MJP hydrojet propulsion unit and three 2,000 hp MAN engines enabling a top speed of over 50 knots. As a result the yacht can sail from Portofino to Saint Tropez in a few hours, or from Miami to Cat Cays in the Bahamas in just one hour. The relatively shallow 1.3-metre draught makes it possible to access unexpected bays and beaches

The Shipyard Gennaro Candida De Matteo CEO Next Yacht Group

The new AB100 for AB Yachts is our top product - it has the most exciting performance and trend-setting furnishings, systems, versatility and style. It offers passengers the excitement of powering through the waves at over 50 knots almost without noticing it, in total comfort and with outstanding efficiency and safety. Reflecting the DNA of the Next Yacht Group, the concept underlying its creation is to provide a new dimension in customisation, a bespoke yacht without the complexities of a custom-made product. Not only are choices offered for the layout, decor and engines but the high level of modularity gives owners the opportunity to choose, starting from different stern and superstructure modules, their interpretation of onboard life and spatial configurations. Its strengths are those recognised by the Best Performance Yacht Award at the World Yachts Trophies in Cannes. The naval platform is the best-performing on today’s market, and can travel at over 50 knots in force 3 and force 4 winds in total safety and comfort, as we showed in the sea trials at Cannes at the time of the awards.

On board, the yacht has been redesigned to provide even more load space in the garage and accessibility in the engine room, facilitating operations and maintenance. The garage also now offers a float-in system for tender and toys, an innovative sound insulation system based on metapanels and resonators, honeycomb construction for all the flat panels, the charm of new stylistic and material details in the interiors and site-specific works of art by Francesca Pasquali. To consume less and go faster you have to be light, and we’re fascinated by the design-to-weight challenge. The right mix of carbon fibre, Kevlar, sandwich, honeycomb and lightened panels provide the best sailing qualities. But it’s a challenge that has to be perfected every day without ever being satisfied with the results we’ve achieved.

AB 100 Elegance means unequalled top speed, outstanding handling characteristics, the ability to go places other yachts couldn’t even get near, comfort, efficiency in terms of consumption per mile (almost constant once the yacht is on plane) and a total lack of vibration. The result is a surge of adrenalin, endorphins, performance and glamour.

Modern, international contemporary photography at this year’s Paris Photo, the 25th edition of one of Europe’s most important photography events, a showcase for a market that’s more diverse than ever. It’s been a big draw for collectors, a phenomenon confirmed by the auction house figures – Christie’s held one of the first photography auctions in 1972. Whether classic preand post-war auteurs or contemporary artists, they are all riding a wave of interest. Photos by figures like Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Lewis Hine, Irving Penn, Candida Hofer and Justin Aversano attract bids ending in a string of zeroes. The event featured 183 exhibitors from 31 countries, displayed throughout the various sections. The main

area, a collection of 134 galleries, hosted a series of works from contemporary and 19th century artists, always a popular period, with stand-out galleries like Gagosian Paris, Pace New York (also presenting an important body of images from photographer Paolo Roversi with textile artist Sheila Hicks), Nathalie Obadia Paris and various new entries like Alberto Damian Treviso, plus figures from across the world including South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. These were complemented by solo and twohanded shows focussing attention on artists like Daniel Gordon and Boris Mikhaïlov, plus a homage to the people of the Ukraine with a series entitled Theater of War. The Curiosa section, with sixteen galleries from nine countries, brought together examples of emerging art in a selection of new talent assembled by Holly Roussell, curator of the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. Identifying the main themes was no simple matter, though – in the words of director Florence Bourgeois, “We wanted to present a panorama of photography, the techniques that can make taking photos and prints unique. Then there are the political works like those by Boris Mikhaïlov of the Ukraine in the Suzanne Tarasieve Gallery or those depicting the body and performance, especially Marina Abramovic of Wilde and the exhibitions mounted by our partners”. One of these, the BMW Group, is celebrating 20 years of collaboration with Paris Photo.

The German car manufacturer has been involved in the cultural world for 50 years. This year’s winners of the BMW Art Makers programme are the artist Arash Hanaei and the curator Morad Montazami with the work Suburban Hauntology on the dystopian architecture of the 1970s. Discovering the artists whose work is on display was made easier by a series of useful thematic guides by figures from the worlds of culture and journalism like Thomas Girst, head of BMW’s culture department, with his twenty coups de coeur and Romanian artists Iosif and Aurora Királi from the Anca Poterasu Gallery. The event’s guests of honour, the actor Rossy de Palma, a regular in Pedro Almodovar’s films, selected eight powerful, unusual works including Female Torso with Veil, Paradise Cove, 1984 by Herb Ritts). The JP Morgan curators have identified 20 artists, including André Kertész with Les lunettes et la pipe de Mondrian from 1926, Gallerie Françoise Paviot, while Elle magazine defined a female-oriented experience highlighting the presence of women artists, including Letizia Battaglia, represented by Alberto Damian. Themes could also be identified in landscape photos like those of Yto Barrada (Pace Gallery) and Barry Salzman (Deepest Darkest Gallery, Cape Town). Salzman explored the locations of genocides with poetic metaphorical landscapes.

The Triumph of Colour

The stylistic codes of a historic name in the Italian fashion industry now decorate the table with a style heritage that has brought the brand international fame

he revolution brought about by Missoni in the fashion world has transformed knitwear items into works of art, with dynamic geometrical patterns and kaleidoscopic colours. The brand was founded in 1953 by Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, and its unmistakable style has extended into the Home sector, interpreting Rosita’s vision of the home as a haven of warmth and welcome, an organised yet informal environment that can also excite and surprise. A new element, the tableware line, was added to the Missoni world in 2022. The Missoni Tableware Collection is produced and distributed by the manufacturer Arnolfo di Cambio – Compagnia Italiana del Cristallo S.r.l., another illustrious Italian company that began producing tableware collections in 1963. The brand’s distinctive patterns, transferred onto prestigious materials like fine bone china, blown glass and silver-plated stainless steel take on new expressive possibilities. The tableware collection develops a number of lines reflecting the many ways the table can be experienced, starting with a series of tea and coffee services, complemented by decorative mugs and vases and bearing the bright, multicolour pattern of the Stripes line. The table services, complete with charger plates, fruit dishes and bread plates, are recognisable from the refined zigzag pattern that immediately evokes the play of shades that’s a characteristic feature of the knitwear collections – the Zig Zag line is offered in a range of colours, from refined total white to sets where the dominant hues are shades of deep blue, cobalt blue or orange, violet and fuchsia. The decoration doesn’t end

A new superyacht that’s all about balance, a design concept that highlights the beauty of its classic features and the maritime traditions embodied by this cutting-edge product. This 43-metre craft was designed and built by the Codecasa shipyard

99

oji, the seventh yacht in the Codecasa’s Vintage line, combines essential lines and a timeless, classically sober appeal. Launched in 2011, the series is based on a naval platform designed for custom yachts below 500 GT with exceptional interior volumes, combined with ample external spaces and an emphasis on safety and seaworthiness. The feeling generated on board the Boji is one of respect for the development of a maritime culture that can evolve through technical innovation. Design, development and build have all been handled by the yard, and the majority of furnishings are custom designed by the Codecasa style office and produced by local artisans boasting a long-established relationship with the yard, enabling it to offer a top-drawer, bespoke Italian-made product.

Boji is a four-deck design with slender steel hull and limited freeboard. Its compact aluminium superstructure and imposing vertical bow lend it an air of dynamism and personality. Its style is measured, welcoming and extremely elegant, and the yacht has a clear identity that defies comparison with that of a floating villa. The exteriors and interiors share a relaxingly uniform style, starting with the colours, which range through white, grey and dove grey, and the overall layout combines aesthetic appeal, functionality and the owner’s specifications.

The main deck cockpit provides access to lounge, with light flooding in through the large windows to be reflected by the light colours. The conversation area, with sofas and bar counter, is separated from the dining area by a low, discreet white storage unit. The wood panelling

on wall and ceiling, also white, is softened by moulding that highlights the traditional feel of the design. The long, longitudinal bleached teak floorboards with Canaletto walnut fillets emphasise the depth of the space. Further forward on the same deck, after the lobby, lies the full-beam owner’s suite with sleeping area preceded by a spectacular study looking out over the sea. On the more informal upper deck the saloon enters into a dialogue with the open-air dining area, with a well-sheltered, very private lounge towards the bow.

As well the owner’s suite, Boji can accommodate eight guests. The four lower deck cabins reflect the same stylistic choices as the owner’s suite, with refined elements like Italian bedheads by Penelopeoggi, bedcovers and fabrics by Loro Piana and decorative cushions with Zimmer Rhode fabrics. The heart of the yacht, an area for relaxation and fun, is the sun deck. Here, leisure time can be enjoyed in versatile surroundings and in total privacy. There is a hydromassage pool forward, framed by a series of sunpads, and in the centre, sheltered by the top, is a living area with bar counter. The aft section is dedicated to sun worship, and in the evening it can be transformed into an open-air cinema.

Boji’s lines and timeless style are complemented by cutting-edge technical solutions to manage consumption, environmental factors and comfort. The fast displacement hull, efficient and with low hydrodynamic drag, is the result of a series of computer simulations and naval tank tests. The twin Caterpillar engines provide a top speed of 16.5 knots, with a 4,000 mile range at a cruising speed of 11 knots. www.codecasayachts.com

Gianluca Imeri, Codecasa Technical Office

M/Y Boji is a development of the successful Vintage series. For Codecasa, the term Vintage means a return to the beauty of the past in a modern context, with cutting-edge technical features. We drew inspiration from the most classic maritime traditions, taking into account the requirements of modern owners in terms of comfort, reliability and safety. The distinctive element in all the yachts in the series is the straight bow, which is complemented by elegant, classic lines that are timeless and always contemporary. M/Y Boji has the typical hull lines of a fast displacement vessel. The vertical bow extends the waterline, which matches the overall length. This reduces drag and translates into reduced power demands. To maximise on-board comfort we worked on cutting noise and vibrations. As well as using insulating, sound-absorbing materials we’ve installed a system of electrically-operated stabiliser fins which generate less noise than oleodynamic systems and are easier to instal and maintain.

In the context of safety, the M/Y Boji complies fully with, for example, REG Yacht Code stability criteria even in the event of a damage. A Sicurtek antiintruder alarm system has also been installed. We’ve succeeded in achieving everything we proposed in the design phase for Boji, installing on this 43-metre yacht a whole range of features and new technology that provide the safety, reliability and on-board comfort typical of larger yachts, always with an emphasis on respect for the environment.

This yacht’s most striking feature is its classic, timeless lines. All its exterior spaces have generous dimensions. Below, the upper deck dining area with custom-made teak table and chairs. To side, top, the forward lounge, also on the upper deck. It is well-sheltered and provides exceptional privacy

Paola Spano and Sara Mencacci, Codecasa Style Office

Boji’s design philosophy is based above all on achieving a balance between the spaces, so the division of the interiors, stairs, cabins and lounges are of fundamental importance –they are functional and practical, as the yacht should be experienced as well as admired. The furnishings are sober and rational, eschewing brash spectacle. The dominant colours are dove grey, pearl grey, mud and olive green, held together by yellow ochre. As always, the main challenges presented by our projects involve making maximum use of space to ensure outstanding comfort and combine technical and aesthetic requirements. In terms of layout this is achieved by skilfully positioning the vertical connections so that crew and guest walkways are not obstructed. Decisions regarding the routing of cables and conduits were taken in collaboration with the engineers in order to avoid any problems with furnishings.

The exteriors and interiors share a relaxingly uniform style, and the overall layout combines aesthetic appeal, functionality and the owner’s specifications. The furnishings are sober and rational, eschewing brash spectacle, most elements are designed by the creative team (picture above, Paola Spano, left, and Sara Mencacci)

Compared to the earlier units in the Vintage series we’ve increased the size of the windows in the lounges and owner’s area and used very pale interior base colours to enhance the natural light, which the owner requested. For the lights we tended to use decorative, dimmable LEDs hidden in the ceiling coving, beneath the stairway steps and below the edges of the beds. The temperature of the natural colours adds warmth to the interiors.

Many interior and exterior furnishing elements are of our own design and are made by our trusted artisans, like the smoked glass dining table with wengé coloured frame and the bar unit in a style that matches the wall cabinetry and sofas. Outside, the various elements in teak are hand-made by our local supplier.

104

Dove grey, grey and white dominate the interiors, which are largely furnished with custom-made pieces like the sofas and coffee tables in the main deck saloon (opposite page), the dining area with smoked glass table (above) and the bed and desk in the owner’s suite (below). Flooring throughout the yacht features long bleached teak floorboards with Canaletto walnut fillets

The Shipyard Fulvio Codecasa, Chairman Codecasa Shipyards

For us the Codecasa 43 M/Y Boji is the latest confirmation of the success we’ve enjoyed with the introduction of the line of yachts with a vertical bow. We’ve received many orders so we’ve continued to produce this type of yacht, which was was launched in 2011 with the Vintage series. It’s undergone several subtle variations until eventually taking shape in this new example. We started construction of the M/Y Boji on spec – its owner, in fact, entered the picture when the yacht was already in an advanced stage of construction. Building yachts on spec is standard practice for us, mainly because it enables us to maintain continuity for all our employees and means we can offer a new product ready for the summer season. What we take most pride in with this elegant, comfortable and high-performance yacht is that it’s made the owner happy, fulfilling his requirements. We’re especially pleased to have built a very safe yacht under the 500 GT limit. One of Boji’s great strengths is its exceptional comfort in all areas - under way, too. The great privacy it offers and the light flooding in through the large windows enable owner and guests to enjoy the maritime experience to the full. Every space on the Boji is welcoming, with attention paid to every detail. When pushed, though, I’d have to say my favourite is the sun deck, which I think is a very peaceful environment where privacy and the generous, comfortable spaces it provides create a highly versatile space where it’s possible to enjoy an all-round view of the sea.

ORGANISED CHAOS

For the London-based studio that means the process of everything being perfect and imperfect at once. A unique approach to creating environments of timeless distinction

Seductively rich, dreamy ambiences bursting with originality and distinction. Each one a seamless standalone melding of creativity and sophistication. “My husband and I launched Bergman Design House in 2017 – the name being a blend of our surnames (Berglund and Soliman). It happened organically: we were doing small freelance jobs such as small townhouses on the side,” says Marie. At the time they were working with Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA). “Then we met Olia, the owner of BXR (ed.’s note, a luxury boxing gym in London), and she asked us to design the gym “. The project was a massive success and soon the couple’s names were on everyone’s lips. They eventually parted ways with Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) to focus on their own work. “We were suddenly asked to set up a company, design a logo and launch a website. The universe had given us a massive push forward, so we took the leap of faith and Bergman Design House was born,” smiles Soliman. As an artist herself, Marie believes that art is a reflection of the spirit.

“It can tell you stories, jokes, and can be crazy. It can make you happy or sad, but always gives you something to look forward to”. Her work delves into the cultural differences between the East

and West, but she is inspired rather than dictated to by the vibrant colours and rich textures of her native Egypt where she majored in interior architecture with art as a secondary subject. This twinning of the two milieus has turned her into an authentic eclectic, her work spanning design, limited edition couture, fine jewellery and bespoke lighting. “I don’t have a house style, I am not a decorator. All my houses are different on a personal level too. I love dreaming, creating and most important having fun!,” she explains. “If it’s too perfect, it’s flat. But if it’s still messy, then what is the functionality? You need a mix of both. I feel that organised chaos is the process of everything perfect and imperfect. A space has to be functional and timeless, with a playful hint of surprise or whimsical energy”. This philosophy has turned out to be the perfect fit for the yacht sector too. At the height of the pandemic when many of their clients were retreating to the safety of their yachts, Soliman and Berglund broadened their horizons still further by creating Njord by Bergman Design House, a specialist superyacht interior design studio, with Sarah Colbon, one of the most knowledgeable, wellconnected women in yachting.

“Yachts are the perfect mix between the playful experiences of a hotel and a zen floating home!” Colbon says, picking up the story.

“It’s also so refreshing to see that clients and yachts owners are increasingly becoming younger, willing to travel more, and living and working on their yachts! They are no longer a toy chasing the sun for few weeks a year”. The Bergman’s third yacht project, the refit of the 56m Benetti Galaxy, earned it universal acclaim, but there are plenty of other collaborative projects to come this year and beyond. Underpinning everything, however, is scrupulous research into materials and details. “Hunting down the perfect slab of colourful stone always make my day!”

laughs Marie “We are known for our stone selection. We never go for the obvious – I am a risk-taker! Stone is art on its own to treasure and appreciate. Carved bog timber is also one of my favourites! …” The studio is just beginning to spread its wings. The ideas are flowing, effortlessly anticipating and mirroring broader trends as Marie says proudly: “We’ve also launched the Black Berg collection of affordable sustainable luxury furniture: it’s been a huge success with our private clients; now we are preparing to launch it to the general public!”

HARMONIC PATTERNS

Materials embodying the principles of BioGeometry exploit its potential in the furnishing and design industries, promoting personal well-being. Federica Caimi, President of Harmonic Shapes, describes the development of this innovative idea and how it can be applied

114

Everything stems from the synergy between two favourable conditions – on the one hand, the extensive knowledge of materials possessed by Caimi International S.p.A., a reference point for the sector producing finishing materials for building interiors and exteriors, backed by a know-how developed over generations, on the other a passion shared by father and son for philosophies that investigate the interactions between energy flows in the human body and the environment and reveal ways of improving people’s physical and mental well-being. As Federica Caimi relates, the idea came into being in 2017 during a seminar examining the BioGeometry research carried out by Doctor Ibrahim Karim. “I’ve always been interested in energy, waves and the geometries surrounding the Earth and their impact on people’s

well-being. As a result I decided to take part in BioGeometry courses together with my father, the co-founder and art director of Harmonic Shapes. Thanks above all to the wonderful relationship we struck up with Dr. Ibrahim Karim, this gave rise to the idea of using BioGeometry for the first applications of Harmonic Shapes, using high-quality materials and established technology. We chose our partner companies, limiting the possibilities to those we regarded as leaders in their field, and obtained exclusive rights to the patterns Dr. Ibrahim created on the basis of studies and research to exert a beneficial effect on the space in which they are located and the people who live there. We applied these patterns developed for the design world to surfaces, textiles and finished products like marble, parquet, woods, wallpaper, glass, stoneware,

115 [ BESPOKE / HARMONIC SHAPES ]
The four geometries expressed by the Harmonic Shapes collection maintain their effectiveness even when scaled down – what is important is that their proportions remain the same. This property means they can be adapted to most surfaces and spaces

Many modern yachts rely partly on solar panels to fulfil their energy requirements. Detailed analyses of their interiors could identify spaces where the application of the Centering pattern may help combat the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields

ecological films and mosaics”. The result was the launch of the Harmonic Shapes brand, which combines innovative ideas and methods with a powerful aesthetic appeal to apply the principles of this philosophy to furnishing materials. The four patterns in the collection focus on harmonising spaces and people, and each pattern has its own distinctive features - Synergy Shape seeks to establish an equilibrium between the two hemispheres of the brain, Harmony Shape influences the energy of the biological processes, Balancing Shape emphasises a balance of the vital functions and Centering Shape uses geometry to combat the harmful effects of electro-magnetic radiation. The positive effects on the individual are complemented by the aesthetic value of the surfaces, which can be personalised in all their elements. “The distinctive graphic motif displayed by the patterns can be printed, engraved, silk-screen printed, applied with a film or created by a skilled cabinet maker. It’s also possible to make the geometries become a part of the architecture by, for example, transferring the patterns onto marble columns. Some especially striking pieces we have created feature engraving with gold or etching the pattern onto an onyx plate. When backlit this produces a highly evocative effect. In terms of interior design we can say that the Harmonic Shapes collection opens up a series of intriguing possibilities”. Federica Caimi identifies another aspect of the product, pointing out that the geometric motifs need not be visible to be effective, but it is nevertheless crucial that they are located within a space. With customisable dimensions, colours and materials, Harmonic Shapes open new perspectives for interior designers and anyone seeking to combine aesthetic requirements with promoting physical and mental well-being. www.harmonicshapes.com

A true explorer on a discreet scale, the 43-metre Acala is a culmination of Cantiere delle Marche’s prowess for building immensely capable explorer yachts. Featuring a layout that is ruthlessly logical and utterly unconventional, and low-key interiors where beauty and functionality go hand in hand, she is destined for long range, remote cruising in the utmost comfort

ithout a universal definition, the term “explorer” is used all too often to describe standard yachts with utilitarian aesthetics. But surely one necessity of an explorer yacht is an ability to safely and comfortably access destinations that are out of the reach of conventional yachts. In this sense, full-custom Acala is a true explorer yacht. Commissioned by experienced owners who enjoy sailing to archipelagos lost in the expanses of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Acala incorporates all the characteristics and features they have come to learn they need within just 440gt.

Acala marks a new collaboration between Cantiere delle Marche and Horacio Bozzo Design, who designed her conspicuous exterior. The result has been more than satisfactory: the dramatic profile featuring a raked bow and compact superstructure captures the very soul of an explorer vessel while combining it with the elegance of a luxury yacht.

Guest areas are spread over three decks plus a sun deck, with an interior layout that sleeps 12 guests across six suites. A large lobby sits between the main salon and guest night quarters, while the full beam main deck forward is dedicated to owners and guests. Three large VIP suites and an owner’s suite on the starboard side are flooded by natural light from large windows and two further twin cabins are located on the lower deck.

An intimate salon on the main deck and a large panoramic sky lounge on the upper deck with dining area have been designed and decorated for indoor relaxation and entertainment. A particularly large cockpit features dining and lounging areas, a swimming pool and lots of space to relax. A large and partially shaded sun deck perfectly integrated into the profile provides the social hub for guests with al fresco dining, bar, vast sunbathing area and a second swimming pool.

Acala’s design by Mexican designer Simon Hamui is luxurious and relaxed at the same time. The style is aesthetically pleasant and logically coherent with the exterior look of the yacht and with the owners’ way of living on board. The owners wanted warm and welcoming interior spaces and wellappointed exterior areas for outdoor living.

Consistency and homogeneity of the interior decoration was another key request, and the result is unerring: the internal environments highlight a neatness and formal rigour combined with comfort, while subtle colours create a relaxing atmosphere.

Acala is a pure explorer and, therefore, she needs a high level of independence. The engine room is one of the sources of that independence as its redundant equipment allow to sail far and wide and to reach remote areas of the globe where it is impossible to access any sort of assistance. Her range of around 7500 nm at 10 knots will also be extremely useful. An expansive lazarette provides a very large storage area needed for many cruising necessities, water toys and diving equipment.

Since her delivery, Acala’s owners have almost never left the yacht. Having spent the summer cruising all around the Mediterranean, her itinerary will soon take her further afield to truly fulfil her vocation of remote cruising. www.cantieredellemarche.it

Exterior Design

Horacio Bozzo, Horacio Bozzo Design

The aim of our work is to see the owners’ desires take shape and the owners recognising themselves in it. Designing an explorer yacht for such an experienced owner who grew up around boats and understands yachting perfectly was very gratifying.

Acala’s profile, characterised by a raked bow and compact superstructure, captures the very soul of an explorer vessel and combines it with the elegance of a luxury yacht that will stand the test of time. Large windows on the main deck, whose mullions seem not to join the superstructure, are undoubtedly the signature features of her exterior design.

Below, Acala features a thick and robust steel hull and light aluminium superstructure, while her exterior shapes, volumes and lines compose a harmonious geometry. Opposite page above, a large and partially shaded sun deck perfectly integrated into the profile provides the social hub for guests with al fresco dining, bar, vast sunbathing area and second swimming pool. Below, the al fresco dining area on the sun deck benefits from protection from the elements and is served by a dumbwaiter

All shapes, volumes and lines compose a well-balanced geometry, while her roomy body encompasses luxury social areas and very large and comfortable crew quarters – as requested by the owner whose plans include long-term cruising to reach the farthest corners of the world. A beam of 8.60 metres provides large interior spaces while allowing enjoyable side passages as found on a much larger vessel. There is also a consistency between the shape of the bow and the curve of the stern and a balance between length and volume.

The most amazing areas on board includes the huge saloon on the upper deck, which opens onto the stern terrace and has uninterrupted views on both sides thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass surfaces. The large sun deck is enjoyable even on windy days as it is protected by windbreakers doors. The crew quarters are another highlight, whose dimensions and finishes are something never seen on a yacht of Acala’s size.

The use of spaces and volumes to create highly enjoyable living environments has been calculated to the last centimetre, square centimetre, and cubic centimetre.

Harmony on board Acala is not accidental as I’ve tried to find the right balance between functionality and beauty by combining the scientific approach of a naval architect with the artistic touch of a passionate designer.

122

Above, an extremely comfortable owners’ suite to starboard is flooded by natural light from large windows and the extensive use of wood continues the consistency of the interior decoration

Interior Design Simon Hamui, Simon Hamui Design Studio

Given the longstanding and trusting relationship established with the clients from previous projects, the approach to Acala’s interiors was straightforward in terms of use and practicality. The client’s vast experience with yachts, and how they use them, was key to the logical and pragmatic approach to the overall layout and space distribution.

Understanding how the family and their guests live as a group when traveling determined the specific function, style and capacity of all indoor and outdoor spaces. All decisions were made in collaboration with the owners and, thanks to our excellent relationship, the project development was smooth and enjoyable.

For the aesthetic approach, we chose a very neutral and natural palette for all materials on board as the owners wanted a very calming and relaxing atmosphere. The woods used to get the desired result includes wire-brushed oil-finished oak for the wall panelling, ash wood for the flooring, aged figured eucalyptus for the cabinetry in the owner’s suite and grey ash wood and grey sucupira wood in the guest cabins. All cabinets feature leather inserts in different nuances, including beige, orange, grey, powder blue. We designed most of the furnishings and added just a few pieces by renowned manufacturers and selected artworks to provide Acala with a very personal character. For the ceilings, we designed felt-like panels with longitudinal strips of the same wood used in the wall panelling to create a welcoming ambiance, like a cocoon, that keeps you comfortable when you are inside. The use of indirect, soft lighting and careful mirror placement serve to expand the perception of the rooms.

The overall idea was to create a very informal, relaxed and carefree environment without sacrificing sophistication and well-appointed details in order to match the owners’ lifestyle.

The Shipyard

Vasco Buonpensiere, CEO, Cantiere delle Marche

Iam delighted with, and proud of, this milestone launch. The trust this owner put in Cantiere delle Marche gives us the highest reason of pride. It is a statement of appreciation for both our yachts and ourselves as a team who are always committed to owner satisfaction. The mutual trust established between this client and the CdM team has been pivotal to the successful completion of such a complex project.

CdM’s strategy to dedicate one slot per year to fully custom projects has proved to be successful and extremely important for the technical growth of the shipyard. Building these one-off vessels is a great opportunity for our team to learn something new and to work out of our comfort zone: this is the only key to move forward and improve, in our opinion, and that’s why we opted for this strategy The work on Acala’s technical specifications was extremely detailed and lasted almost 12 months to achieve a double result: to build a 43-metre yacht with the most detailed and comprehensive specs we have ever drawn up and to proceed with no need for major modifications as construction progressed. In the light of these approaches and procedures, within the team we joke that we have built the smallest 80-metre yacht ever built!

Acala is an extraordinary explorer yacht built for an extraordinary owner who is a true explorer himself. The layout of the yacht is fit for purpose and highly functional. Whoever has the chance to visit Acala feels it: she actually casts a spell on all go on board. Her exterior design boasts elegantly shaped lines and her interior is extraordinarily comfortable and welcoming. There is nothing astonishing or glamorous on board Acala, but what you see is the essence of elegance – something rarely seen on yachts where most features are meant to surprise or show how expensive they are.

Below, large windows on the main deck are undoubtedly the signature features of her exterior design. A beam of 8.60 metres provides large interior spaces while allowing enjoyable side passages as found on a much larger vessel

Chase Zero, the America’s Cup Emirates Team New Zealand’s hydrogen-fuelled support vessel flies on its foils during its initial sea trials in New Zealand’s Auraki Gulf. Launched last spring, it reached a top speed of 53.2 knots

Hydrogen is becoming part of the America’s Cup. The world’s oldest yachting trophy is looking to the future, and at the next race, to be held in Barcelona in 2024, the teams must be assisted by at least one hydrogen-fuelled support boat. The new rule dictates that these support vessels must be at least 10 metres long, be capable of a top speed of 50 knots and have a range of 180 miles – in short, they must combine innovation with breath-taking performance. However, as the sailboats we will see engaged in America’s Cup duels - the new AC75s - will be futuristic craft, flying over the water on foils at astronomical speeds, their support boats must have a performance to match.

Emirates Team New Zealand is the first team to have launched its support boats - Chase Zero is a hydrogen-powered catamaran whose foils slice through the water at 35 knots, sometimes nudging speeds of 50. American Magic will soon be receiving its chase boat, built by Bluegame, a Sanlorenzo Group brand, and the other four teams - Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, Ineos Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing and K-Challenge - will follow suit. The world of competition sport has provided further important stimuli – this year sees the debut of the E1 Series, the first race series reserved for electric boats. The first prototype to take to the water was RaceBird, specially designed by Victory Design (see page 59) for foil-to-foil racing. Seven metres long, it can reach a top speed of 50 knots.

129
Innovation and experimentation are no strangers to the Amercia’s Cup world, and the new rule mandating that chase boats must be hydrogen-fuelled may give a decisive boost to the development of fuel-free craft

The signals arriving from the Cup and the E1 Series are not isolated phenomena - the development of fuel-free propulsion methods is an important first step that many yards are taking in their drive to create yachts that are rather more environmentally respectful. Zero-emission sailing means not only reducing energy waste but also minimising vibrations and sound, revolutionising the entire experience. The people at Sunreef are well aware of this, and their Sunreef 80 Eco, named best electric sail yacht of 2022 at the Gussies Electric Boat Awards, takes full advantage of its revolutionary green tech for fuelfree cruising in total silence and luxury. This sail catamaran is 23.87 metres long, with electric power provided by composite-integrated solar panels built into the hull sides, mast, superstructure and bimini roof. The Silent Yacht yard was founded with the aim of creating ocean-going catamarans with solar power electric propulsion. The hard top on its Silent 120, a 36.74 metre superyacht to be launched in 2024, mounts solar panels capable of generating up to 40kWp that slide sideways to make room for the helipad. The yacht will sail at eight knots, with bursts of speed of up to 16 knots. The Silent 80 and 90 are also under construction at the yard. Of course, such large electric-powered craft need to be supported by electric tenders, and in November Silent Yacht launched the Silent Tender 400. Built using carbon fibre, it is available with inboard or outboard motor. Mind-bending performance levels are also predicted for the Silent Speed 28, whose foils, 200 kW engine and new drive train supplied by eD-TEC

The Silent 120. The solar panels on the hard top can slide away to make room for the helipad. The company has realized also the Silent Tender 400, a small electric carbon fibre tender

enable a top speed of 60 (yes, 60!) knots. The transition to 100% electric is most evident in the smaller size segment. One of the latest new arrivals on the market, the Capoforte SQ204i, is an elegant 7.38 metre craft that can be fitted with the Yamaha HARMO 3.7 kW outboard or the 50kW Molabo ISCAD electric in-board engine. As for RIBs, the new Pulse 63 has been designed specifically for electric propulsion, and uses eco-sustainable materials like PET, recycled carbon fibre, linen fibre and bio-derived resins. Gommone con scafo in alluminio, riciclabile e durable, e motorizzato con fuoribordo ePropulsion Navy 6.0 Evo che provides clean, efficient and reliable power at 9.9HP. The X Shore yard has chosen an interesting route to follow. With its new X Shore 1 it has

developed an electric boat that’s significantly more economical than the yard’s previous models. With a base price of 99,000 euro, it costs less than a third than the Eelex 8000. Riva’s El-Iseo is an ultra-sophisticated electric craft - we saw the prototype in 2022 and this year we’ll see it take to the water and appear on the market. A prestigious collaboration between Persico, the shipyard that built Luna Rossa, to name but one example, and Zagato (active in automotive design and renowned for creating the bodywork for a series of illustrious supercars) has resulted in the Persico Zagato 100.2, an exclusive runabout almost eight metres long. Only nine of these are to be built – they will be powered by Sealence DeepSpeed 205 kW electric jet propulsion and will reach 40 knots. The course towards zero emissions has definitely been set!

BREAK WITH CONVENTION

Pushing the boundaries in terms of composite construction and intelligent design, the CLX96 SAV represents the ultimate yacht for modern explorers by encouraging them to live on board in their own authentic way

135

While the CLX96 SAV’s aggressive and angular profile reflects her sturdy workboat capabilities, CL Yachts’ flagship is a new iteration of vessel incomparable to any other. The SAV acronym stands for Sea Activity Vessel and beholds a unique meaning for each individual owner depending on how they want to live on board.

The key to encompassing all possible lifestyles within one model was creating an immensely capable yacht that rethinks traditional yacht design. To achieve this, CL Yachts looked outside the industry for the exterior and interior design to renowned product designer Jozeph Forakis. “They gave me a clean slate to conceive a new vision for the yacht of today and tomorrow,” comments Forakis. “With in-depth research methodologies and a focus on intelligent design, complementing my passion for sailing and an ‘outsiders’’ imagination and dreams, the result is a vessel that departs from convention.” While her double-reverse-angle profile and iconic wing-like flybridge bulwark are visually distinctive, these elements were born from a holistic reconsideration of the way owners live on board and informed by precise structural principles. As such, the CLX96 is characterised by flowing indoor and outdoor spaces. Unprecedented amounts of light flood the interiors thanks to oversized windows throughout.

The main deck features trifold doors to starboard that open the midships area to the side deck and bulwark cutaway, creating a seemingly alfresco dining area in the heart of the living space. This area blends seamlessly with the comfortable aft saloon and forward

galley with island and Champagne lounge – the perfect spot for cocktails or nature-watching.

The indoor-outdoor living continues on the upper deck, with the enclosed helm and sky lounge forward offering shade and climatecontrolled comfort connected to a huge aft sundeck. Forward of the pilot house, Forakis has created an additional deck space for sun loungers and, on the foredeck, there is a circular aperitif lounge that converts into a giant sunbed. Aft, the generous swim platform emulates a beach club, with the Z-lift extension not only easing tender launching but also creating an additional terrace at water level. With accommodation encompassing four guest cabins including a vast master suite, the interiors are luxurious but considered. The materials, finishes, and colours are restricted, giving a sense of continuity throughout and emphasizing the amount of daylight in each space. Through seamless surfaces, subtle curves, and flowing planes, Forakis reminds those on board that they are on a vessel meant to transport them through space and time towards the future.

The CLX96 is not just a design masterpiece, however, she is also an engineering feat. The SAV concept demands big viewing areas requiring an abundance of glass, leaving the amount of real estate for structure limited. Furthermore, in keeping with SAV requirements for speed and range, the composite structure needed to be as light and strong as possible. By pushing the boundaries of composite building, the CLX96 embodies her Sea Activity Vessel rationale. www.clyachts.com

BELL’S AIR TAXI

The Textron Group’s rotorcraft brand has developed its electrically-propelled eVTOL Nexus. With limousine-style interiors it looks set to revolutionise urban airborne mobility

Introduced as a concept at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019, the Bell Nexus is an interpretation of the electric flying vehicle by Bell Helicopters, one of the world’s major rotorcraft producers. Like many other concepts appearing in recent years the design itself was initially simply a sketch, but it was the “who” behind the presentation that made all the difference. At the moment it’s hard to say if this new aircraft type will enjoy widespread success - it’s easier to predict that it will generate sales in the luxury sector, because an exclusive flying vehicle with advanced design elements that can avoid traffic and shuttle between a yacht and dry land, for example, with zero CO2 emissions, transporting a few people several dozen kilometres at most, above all without requiring a pilot to fly it, is sure to be useful and attractive enough to justify its high price. While almost all the companies entering the promising eVTOL sector (vertical take-off and landing electric vehicles) have focussed on cabins with two to four seats, Bell started from a five-seat layout, enabling the company to offer the carrying capacity of a taxi right from the start. It’s clear that it’s still going to take some time, but politicians, investors and technicians all over the world are keen to develop a new market segment. The first of these is EASA, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, which has just published the regulations for the construction of city vertiports, the infrastructure and air corridors that will cater for these machines.

140

“The Bell team is blazing the trail that will enable the growth of electric vehicle use and more ecologically-aware technology”, says Mitch Snyder, president and CEO of Bell. Bell is part of the Textron Group, which in March 2022 spent 235 million dollars to acquire the Slovenia-based Pipistrel, the only company to manufacture and sell an all-electric light aircraft. The intention is to exploit the Slovenian company’s know-how and technology (financed in part by the EU) and transfer this to the wider aviation industry. Rob Scholl, head of Bell’s electrical aviation division, has admitted that the Nexus programme is not yet an industrialscale project, and has confirmed that the company will not be bringing a eVTOL passenger aircraft to the market until it is clear how and where it can be used. However, he also says that “We have been working on Nexus for five years and it’s been a useful way of demonstrating the technology and stimulating market feedback. We now have a clear vision of the technological road map to follow, and we’ll continue to invest while still waiting for batteries to evolve further”. Airbus, Bell’s direct competitor, has also confirmed that eVTOL will be a new type of aviation, as in late September 2021 the company presented its version of a four-passenger aircraft called CityAirbus NextGen. In other words, eVTOL craft are now a certainty and will at first be part of the luxury sector – but not before the end of the decade. www.bellflight.com

WINDY BOATS

Combining Scandinavian build quality with genuinely ground-breaking custom design, working in partnership with world-leading superyacht designers and naval architects, has been Windy’s recipe for success

As a renowned constructor of superyacht-quality small craft, Windy made its first foray into bespoke boatbuilding in 2009. The brand’s latest launch, the SLR60, has immediately asserted itself as the flagship of this sports boat builder, and it’s easy to see why. The SLR60 came into being at the request of an experienced superyacht owner. Building on the success Windy experienced with their 52-foot SR Blackbird, Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design was commissioned to pen the lines of this new 60-foot superyacht chaseboat, which would accompany the owner’s 60-metre sailing yacht, also designed by McKeon.

The SLR60 is the largest model Windy have built to date and firmly establishes the brand’s position in the superyacht chase boat

marketplace. It’s a powerful vessel with a dynamic personality, and one that can boast an 850 nautical mile range at her 25-knot cruising speed. Topping out at 43 knots, the SLR60 is exhilarating to drive, incredibly responsive and offers impressive acceleration and handling at speed.

Speaking of the collaboration, McKeon commented: “We are delighted to have partnered with Windy on this high-profile project. I have known Windy’s Executive Chairman Knut Heiberg-Andersen for many years, and this collaborative opportunity is very special to me. Windy is a strong international brand and Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design is proud to be associated with them.”

The Windy SLR60 has been designed to be the ultimate superyacht

chase boat. Capable of long-distance excursions, the SLR60 will serve as a nimble sports boat for diving and fishing, as well as support shore side exploration.

The contemporary and elegant design features a large swim platform aft of the luxurious guest area and bar, making it an attractive vessel for socialising and enjoying time on the water.

The interior styling of this first model was devised by Liaigre Studio. Below, the SLR60 offers two cabin spaces, one forward and one aft, a galley and day head with shower.

With the first SLR60 model now delivered to its owner, the brand have put the design into production and confirm that several orders have already been placed. www.windyboats.com

The SLR60 is extremely capable in all conditions, with a generous flare to the bow and multiple chines on the hull that keep the boat as dry as possible

EVOLVING INNOVATION

Italian ingenuity has done it again: the aptly-named DeepSeaker DS1 isn’t just a submersible and a hydrofoil, its electric jet powertrain makes it safe for fragile marine environments too

Italy is the home of superyacht design, so it couldn’t be more fitting that it has also produced an exciting new toy that is the answer to every exploration-hungry owner’s wildest dreams. The brainchild of a start-up called iSpace2o, the futuristic DeepSeaker DS1 is both a submersible and a hydrofoil. This sleek pod-like composite craft won’t just zip across the waves at speed in excess of 30 knots, it will also dive below those same waves to a depth of 50 metres, thanks to its mobile ballast system. That said, iSpace2o has broader ambitions for the DeepSeaker DS1 than simply the superyacht market, attractive though that may be. The Abruzzo-based company is also marketing it as an original way to offer visitor trips to underwater archaeological sanctuaries as well as notoriously fragile coral reefs in a non-invasive way. Powered by an electric jet powertrain from Sealance, the DeepSeaker DS1 will whisk its pilot and up to three passengers cleanly across and under the water. iSpace2o CEO and engineer, Giuseppe Carusi explains: “The large planetary ocean sanctuaries will be able to offer visitors an immersive experience in the literal sense”. The light, compact Deepseaker DS1 fits on a trailer in addition to stowing neatly in superyacht garages or on their transoms. A short certified course is all that’s required to pilot it. A patented regeneration system even extracts breathable oxygen directly from seawater so it can stay down longer. Thanks to Invitalia (Italian National Agency for Inward Investment and Economic Development) Smart & Start funding, production of the first hull has begun. “The first 10 DeepSeakers have already been optioned by one of the largest international navigation groups as a means of entertainment for the passengers of its cruise ships,” concludes Carusi proudly. www.ispace2o.com

There’s a close link between the 2,500 examples of the Chronograph 1 and the new 911 Dakar. Owners of the car, and nobody else, will have an exclusive opportunity to acquire the chrono by Porsche Design

[ T he WATCH ] 146

The Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rally Design Edition configured by Porsche Design is available exclusively to buyers of the car. The running second counter at 9 o’clock echoes the colours of the vehicle’s livery

It’s hard to assess a watch’s value, given the large number of variables that enter into the equation. There are also some even more special cases, models that are best described as unique rather than rare. Their cost just can’t be estimated, even when the list price would seem to make it clear. This is the case for the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar and Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rally Design Edition, two timepieces recently developed in German-speaking Switzerland by Porsche Design watch division, a design & lifestyle atelier launched in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and now under the umbrella of the Stuttgart-based auto group. The reason is simple – it’s not enough to be able to afford one, you also have to be the lucky owner of one of the 2,500 examples of the 911 Dakar, an exclusive crossover edition of Porsche’s iconic sports car (see pag. 62). Only then can you

order a your watch in one of the Porsche Centres, making you the proud possessor of a chronograph with in-house movement, flyback function and certification awarded by COSC, the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. The timepiece is given even greater exclusivity by a serial number corresponding to that of the owner’s vehicle, a winding rotor that reproduces the design of the car’s rims and the special material chosen for the case, advanced titanium carbide. This ultra-light, hypo-allergenic material is practically immune to scratches and scrapes. www.porsche-design.com

In 1893, Frédéric Boucheron was the first jeweler to open a boutique on place Vendôme. Four generations, who in the space of 160 years have developed their distinctive style, reputation, expertise and above all, their dream

Landmark One of the oldest jewellery houses in Paris, renowned for its creative style and characterful gems, the brand was founded by Frédéric Boucheron, head of a French jewellery dynasty, in 1858. In 1898 it became the first prestigious name to move to Place Vendôme, making its home in a mansion house at number 26. The location had been chosen with care, for it was it was in a position to receive the maximum amount of sunlight, so the sparkling gems and jewels in the windows could be seen at their best. In the basement lived the Countess of Castiglione - she loved these creations and soon became one of the House’s most important ambassadors. That same year, the company expanded internationally with the opening of a shop in Moscow, followed by boutiques in London, New York and then Tokyo.

The Boucheron company has long been recognised as a superb sculptor of gold, giving priority to working with this noble metal with all its magnificence, its innate forms breathtakingly revealed when shaped by the hands of gifted artisans. Since its very beginnings Boucheron has constantly tried and tested different materials, like the innovative, recently-developed Cofalit®. The brand is fascinated by fine gemstones and exotic materials, and incorporates into its collections lapis lazuli, coral, hematite, onyx, hemp and snakewood. In the 1980s rock crystal became one of House’s favourite materials, chosen for its transparency with inclusions.

Incredibly, Boucheron’s artisans have worked on the top floor of the Place Vendome townhouse since 1893. To enhance the radiance of each stone, the House has mastered all existing setting techniques and developed its own, such as the Mosaic, Mirror and Airy settings. The Airy setting seems to magnify the stone, which appears to float the air as if by magic.

As standard bearer for France’s jewellery sector, Maison Boucheron is committed to preserving and enhancing the know-how, skills and techniques of the jewellery and watchmaking industry. Recognised as an audacious

151

and visionary company, Boucheron values innovation at all levels, from raw materials to boutiques, enabling it to take responsibility for its impact on the environment. Since 2006, the Maison has been a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), a standard-setting organisation that aims to advance ethical, responsible, human rights and social environmental practices throughout the diamond, gold and platinum jewellery supply chain.

Since the year 2000 Boucheron has been a part of the Kering Group, which has developed a Gold Code defining a common ethical gold supply framework for all its brands. The Gold Code also identifies a system for the responsible purchasing of gold, the Kering Ethical Gold Framework (KEGF). The KEGF advocates a responsible gold buying process based on a system of traceability, at a cost that is acceptable to the brands.

THE NEW ECO-SUSTAINABLE CAPSULE COLLECTION

Redefining the meaning of the word “precious”, the Jack de Boucheron Ultime collection features Cofalit®, an industrial waste material that is otherwise used only for highway embankments, and is deemed completely unrecyclable. Its latest creation has enabled the brand to continue its exploration of precious materials by introducing a new element that challenges the conventions established by the high jewellery sector. “Cofalit® is the exact opposite of what is considered precious in the collective imagination. I appreciate the radicalism and the aesthetic aspect of this re-used industrial by-product that has reached the final stage of its life cycle. I was inspired by the fact that this material seems to have no further use. I wanted to restore its value in a lasting way through this capsule collection”, explains the brand’s creative director. Inspired by this vision, the research and development team joined forces with Boucheron artisans to give a radically new interpretation to jewellery traditions by creating the iconic Jack de Boucheron UltiMe with Cofalit® This juxtaposition between extreme preciousness and a so-called “final material” expresses the very essence of Boucheron - pushing the boundaries of innovation and making use of current technological advances to create jewels that are meaningful and highly creative.

GENOA’S NEW FACE

The Ligurian capital will soon add the stunning new Waterfront di Levante to its list of attractions. This internationally important futuristic project embraces green building principles. It will also benefit and provide the Genoa International Boat Show with a welcome boost from 2023 by immersing it in a whole new setting

“We are creating a zero impact living space. A project that focuses on the urbanity of the place, something achieved by living it. There will be people working and living here. And that is very important because urbanity is connected to a mix of functions that have to make the area live 24 hours a day”. The words of Renzo Piano as he describes the radical Waterfront di Levante urban regeneration and transformation project that his Renzo Piano Building Workshop is currently turning into Genoa’s latest attraction and hub. A spectacular waterfront set like a perfect gem into the signature colours of its surroundings. Transparency, suspension, sustainability are the main themes of a project in which water and nature will reappropriate the surrounding space in harmony with the new buildings. “Water

makes things beautiful. Water has to get to where it can get to, and nature does the rest. There will be a connection between the Porto Antico and the Levante. It needs life and you get life when there is a mix of functions: shops, restaurants, homes and there are young people,” continues Piano. “Genoa is stunning and also attractive from a residential point of view. There will be young people’s start-ups and even student accomodation, tertiary services. An idea of Genova as a green city with clean air, much cleaner than other Italian cities”.

The Waterfront di Levante is a colossal undertaking spread over several different building sites at once. It is also an internationally significant and futuristic project that embraces green building principles to the point that it will hold NZEB and Leed Gold

The Waterfront di Levante will be a new city quarter open to all. A place where people can congregate and socialise as well as live, thanks to a modern promenade with retail spaces, bars, restaurants, boutiques for shopping and marina services including a yacht club. And the Genoa Boat Show will also enjoy new jetties and canals as well as 200 extra berths!

certification, the first residential complex in Liguria to do so. The buildings themselves will be low energy with zero CO2 emissions, thanks to the use of technologies of the likes of solar panels and OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion).

That said, the Waterfront won’t just be a single residential complex with exclusive services. It will be a whole new quarter open to all. A place for people to congregate and enjoy their leisure time. There will even be a modern promenade with space for various different activities: retail areas, bars, restaurants for sampling Italian foods of

excellence, boutiques for shopping and marina services, including a yacht club.

The Genoa International Boat Show will also benefit, as it will be surrounded by an entirely new world of ultramodern spaces, services and residential areas. From 2023, the Boat Show will enjoy a completely renovated and highly functional exhibition area too. This will inject new impetus and power into the event with new jetties and canals as well as 200 extra berths. A revolutionary marina that will relaunch Genoa on the world stage.
