he September yacht show season (Cannes, Monaco, Genoa) and is over. Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, too. The Italian yacht-building industry’s prospects for the current yachting year look excellent, with a turnover nudging 7 billion euro according to data from the trade organisation Confindustria Nautica. A heritage to protect and cherish, an opportunity for yards and others involved in the sector, including, of course, satellite industries, to take stock and consolidate. As this issue goes to press we are preparing to take part in the next Design Weekend, taking place in the town of Pietrasanta, in Lucca province. During the event THE ONE Yacht & Design is to coordinate and support a round table entitled Planing and displacement ideas: the physics of creativity. It will provide an opportunity to establish a dialogue between the yacht and design worlds, two increasingly interlinked sectors and fertile ground for useful interaction. The meeting, part of a busy programme of exhibitions and conferences, draws inspiration from the event’s general theme, “Propagating ideas”, bringing in the contribution of important stakeholders. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, as well as the portal at theoneyd.com, where we’ll be publishing content presented at the event.

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]

MARINA STELLA GENERAL MANAGER OF CONFINDUSTRIA NAUTICA by Désirée Sormani

Figures for the 63rd Genoa Boat Show reveal a big increase over the results for 2022, with 13.9% more visitors, 4.5% more yachts and 9.5% more new products. What are the reasons behind this performance? It’s a successful event. In recent years the Boat Show has demonstrated a great capacity for reinvention and creating a multi-specialised platform that has attracts operators from all over the world. In 2020 it was the only European show to be held live. It’s an authoritative event that reflects an Italian industry that’s leading the international rankings. In 2022 Italian pleasure craft exports achived an 18.3% share of the worldwide figure and 88% of Italian yachts are sold abroad. Italy is the world’s top yacht exporter. This year the event saw the participation of the Italian government authorities and was visited by the president of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, the vice-president of the Council of Ministers, the minister for infrastructure and transport, Matteo Salvini and five other ministers. How important is this? It sends an important message. It’s been 36 years since the Prime Minister last attended. I think the governmental and organisational figures have visited the show because they see it as a national asset, a sector that is symbolic of Italian manufacture, innovative entrepreneurialism, an industry that invests and conquers foreign markets. A ministry of the sea has been set up so their attention focused on the Genoa Boat Show means interest in a sector that’s a driving force in the Italian economy. Next year will mark the anniversary of the launch of the Waterfront di Levante project, designed by Renzo Piano. What opportunities will the new district offer the Boat Show? We’ve already seen a renewal this year. This means new exhibition spaces but above all a piece of architectural design that brings the sea even closer to the city, with new navigable channels and the Blue Pavilion island surrounded by the sea. Sea trials have always been a distinctive feature of the Genoa Boat Show. The new navigable channels means there are

16

new spaces on the water. We’ll also be able to offer an innovative hub created for the yacht industry that will strengthen the role played by the International Boat Show. Italy is the leading nation for large yacht production and is the home of a design heritage that’s the envy of the world. What initiatives do you have in the pipeline to take Genoa and its Boat Show to the top in the international rankings, which is the ambition of Saverio Cecchi, president of Confindustria Nautica? Expanding the infrastructure and Waterfront is a central theme, one of the factors driving the Boat Show’s renewal. At the moment Genoa is a building site, the location of a huge infrastructure project with the new Waterfront and the breakwater with a third railway crossing. These are the strategic assets we’re counting on. The show expresses all the Made in Italy values expressed by the Italian expertise that’s recognised all over the world. When you come here to buy a yacht you’re buying a piece of Italy. This year the jury president for the 4th Design Innovation Award, the Confindustria Nautica prize, was Maria Porro, president of the Milan Furniture Show. What does this mean? Our prize, which is independent, was launched in 2020, a tough year for everyone. Even then the show wanted to focus, and we decided to introduce a prize rewarding the innovative elements in the yachts on display. The fact that this year we were honoured by the presence of Dr. Porro strengthened even further the links between the yacht and the design and furnishings industries, sectors that express Italian excellence and the high-end products we create. This kind of mutual influence generates a heritage of shared solutions with an increasing focus on sustainability and extended product lifetimes, a shared store of experience. The yacht and furniture industries are two sectors that have enjoyed long periods of sustained growth and both are attracting large audiences to their shows.

DIEGO LOCATELLI FOUNDER OF WALLPEPPER®/GROUP by Veronica Lempi

Founded by Diego Locatelli, the WallPepper®/ Group company specialises in creating highend personalised wallpaper. Every project is produced and printed by the brand’s creative workshop in its Milan base, ensuring the finished product is of the highest quality

18

What added value is created by choosing a wallpaper for an interior? The crucial change that occurred in the home decor industry saw wallpaper take on a decorative role. In other words, it’s no longer used simply to hide white walls, as was the case in the 1950s when bare walls were plastered to conceal their perceived lack of refinement. Wallpaper helps define a room’s personality and it’s often used just on one wall, as if it were a large fresco. Its role is that of a furnishing complement that can dialogue with the overall design concept. How are your products personalised? As we believe that wallpaper should integrate seamlessly into its surroundings, we offer the opportunity to personalise our wallpapers, either based on a specific subject from among those in the collections we present every year or totally personalised. We start from a colour or detail and arrive at the choice of a particular customised image. It’s all driven by the client’s requirements, but selected alongside the professional who is handling the interiors. Wallpaper should be used as a complement that highlights and enhances the spaces. What are the trends for next season? In the context of yachts, especially luxury models, classic colours with a contemporary elegance dominate. They fit smoothly into the overall interior concept. As for the residential world, we’re moving more and more towards abstract motifs in delicate colours in contrast to the “jungle” effect that was so popular until a few months ago. In the shipbuilding industry, especially cruise ships, we’re seeing a tendency to choose solutions with a convivial appeal. How does designing wallpaper change when it’s for maritime use? As well as being an aesthetically appealing furnishing complement, wallpaper also has a technical element, and that’s the aspect that varies according to the intended use. We design different versions and materials especially to fulfil the requirements of the final purpose. This is also the case when we design a wallpaper for a ship or yacht. It all varies according to the desired performance and the demands of regulatory guidelines. Typically, for the marine environment we work with the so-called “heavy wallpaper” that fulfils very specific technical requirements and offers the widest possible decorative choice. What are the most important new ideas where materials are concerned? In general, we at WallPepper®/Group are always looking for new technical solutions that can satisfy the demand for performance and aesthetics while respecting the regulatory requirements involved in international certification for new buildings, especially in the context of fire resistance. We use two certified materials in nautical projects, WP/Smooth and WP/ Suede, both in line with the IMO-MED standard. Right now our production department is carrying out pre-tests on three new materials we’ve developed to extend our nautical offer. WP/ SMOOTH is an innovative ecological, PVC-free wallpaper based on cellulose and textile fibres derived mainly from Agave leaves, and WP/SUEDE, designed for hard-wearing decoration with good anti-scratch and anti-scuff performance, is PET (polyethylene) based and has nonwoven fabric on the back.

NEW DESIGNERS, OLD ARMCHAIRS by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder of Floating Life

A

s it’s always been in my long career in the yacht world, this year I went to the window to observe the various boat September shows, the new arrivals on the market and the people who attend these events. This year in particular I went to the Monaco Yacht Show. I saw and welcomed visitors to our stand, young designers anxious to enter our world. As we spoke I began to understand the difficulties they encounter in getting themselves known or even just gaining access to construction yard. This is a problem that I think is the result of the ageing of a certain influential peer group that’s reluctant to relinquish even a centimetre of the ground they have battled to acquire during their career. If, though, we take a look at the young talent and their work it’s possible to distinguish the new paths and visions our world is thirsting for. Often, as an old grouch I tell those around me that the time has come when those of my generation (and the ones before) should take a step back or to the side and make room for these kids to come forward and inject new life into the yacht world. It’s

not possible for new ideas to come only from the old guard of well-known names who’ve earned respect for what they do and what they’ve achieved. If today we look at the new products on the market, we see that there aren’t many, and those that are introduced are created by the “old” innovators. In my small way I’m making room for the new cohort and I’ve made my step backwards (not my exit) to make room for the youngsters, remaining available to offer advice when necessary while not imposing my views. I also hope that the others do the same, and without delay, so that I won’t ever again have to attend a yacht symposium where the three greybeards on stage have a combined age of more than 200 years. So I appeal to yards and technical offices to make way for young creatives and their ideas, as long as they respect the demands of safety and the environment, even if we oldies sometimes find them strange and far removed from our creative standards.

I hope that as always my words are not carried away on the wind – of conformity!

he 2023 Monaco Yacht Show brought the debut of Feadship’s 12th Concept Design. Dunes is a spectacular 83m clad in flowing lines by De Voogt. A major stride towards Feadship’s Net-Zero superyachts target, Dunes eliminates up to 95 per cent of the potential negative environmental factors associated with running a superyacht compared to today’s minimum environmental regulations (as assessed by the comprehensive YETI tool). “From customer input, we thought the ‘envelope’ should contain six guest staterooms, plus a spa area, a beach club, an owner’s private deck and a pool,” says designer Thijs Orth. The knock-on effect of moving the engine room to a more forward area was a new layout in which beautiful lower deck guest suites connect to a gorgeous beach club, a watersports platform, and the pool above. The superstructure is asymmetrical with almost no straight lines. Dunes’ undulating curves provide the perfect backdrop for her adaptable, multi-purpose spaces, endless views, and mix of open-plan areas and cosy, intimate nooks. Her nature-inspired design exudes a sense of peace and calm too. Dunes is teak-free: instead her decks shimmer with millions of tiny glass or stone chips sealed in a transparent aliphatic polyurethane resin. www.feadship.nl

that tie together the three decks. Recesses, facets and curves generate a pleasing effect that never descends into banality and demanded significant woodworking skills. Gobbi has inserted spacious areas in a dynamic shell, providing good headroom with natural light flooding in through floor-to-ceiling windows on the main and upper decks. The connection between interiors and exteriors is one of this yacht’s distinguishing strengths. Luca Dini has created a contemporary design where white, gold and sand colours evoke a beach landscape. The natural oak floors are laid in an irregular pattern, while on the walls and ceilings sections of light oak slats are complemented by black-lacquered wood. Daring touches with backlit panels decorated with black/white geometric motifs and gold-colour metal inserts give the spaces a unique, original character. The cockpit is dominated by the glass and gilded mosaic swimming pool that defines the relaxation area along with the longitudinal sofas. A step separates this space from the flush deck. Deep B&B sofas and iconic Platner armchairs from Knoll furnish the main saloon. Here, two backlit panels with graphics made to a Luca Dini design embrace and enchant guests with plays of light and reflections. The full-beam owner’s suite forward has a staircase linking it to an outdoor lounge in the bows on a level between the main and upper decks. It then ascends to the upper deck. The suite has a sofa and TV, sleeping area, office area with Poltrona Frau leather and ash desk, heads and walk-in wardrobe. There is also a fixed balcony to starboard. Set in a circular veranda the upper deck dining area with round glass table has dual window and sunblind system that can close, screen or open the space, linking it seamlessly with the exterior lounge. There is a second dining area on the flydeck in a more informal setting with bar counter, table for ten and sunpad area. The night area on the lower deck hosts four VIP cabins, two with twin beds that can be joined and two cabins with double beds. An elegant, dynamic yacht, the UV II can reach a top speed of 15.4 knots, with a cruising speed of 14 knots. The garage behind the beach club with access to the sea houses a 5-metre tender and a second space forward for the service tender and two jetskis.

T

he main input came from Giuseppe Palumbo, who said to me, “I want to relaunch the GT line. I want to reinterpret it in a contemporary style”. It wasn’t easy. It’s often easier to start from a blank sheet than revamp a successful design that was created in different times. Once, anyone who wanted this kind of yacht knew that compromises would have to be made in terms of interior spaces, but nowadays this is no longer acceptable – we need large windows and generous spaces while maintaining the taut, dynamic lines that owners want to admire when approaching their yacht in the tender. Stylistically we’ve created a sporty, thrusting profile – the curved lines recall a performance car, the rollbar wings evoke a private jet. The wings are all glass, and were very complex to produce, but they are crucial in providing openings to the sea rather than obstacles.

Exterior Design Enrico Gobbi, Founder Team for Design

48

We’ve rethought the distinctive ISA arcs that connect all three decks without distorting them, and we’ve redesigned the external stairs which are now much less bulky. The long, uninterrupted main deck windows make the yacht look longer. We wanted to create dynamic shapes that communicate the idea of movement even when the craft is at anchor. These days you have to rethink the interior spaces and their relationship. When mapping out the yacht’s general layout, for example, we eliminated what I call the “canyon”, the narrow, often dark passageway guests walk through to access the interiors. The owners wanted a villa that is open to the sea. Modern technological glass helps us a lot – we’ll eventually end up with an all-glass yacht! With UV II we’ve succeeded in designing a gran coupé of the sea - combining the sporty lines with generous spaces was an enjoyable challenge.

T

he owner gave us a free hand, with almost total confidence in our highly personal taste. We began to select the most elegant, modern furnishings, and also looked around at what the market had to offer at the time. We knew the spaces had to be simple but rich in stylistic details like the slatted panelling with alternating black and wood, often a recurring theme in the interiors. Our overriding objective was to develop a very bright, elegant, classic interior in light colours that would evoke a seaside villa. Contemporary style and simplicity have always been our starting points. Usually, in other projects where the client has very clear ideas in mind, he or she selects a number of reference images and we begin to make suggestions on the basis of these. It’s the client’s yacht, and the important thing is that he or she is happy. In this case the client didn’t make any specific requests and I must say it was a great challenge for me and the team. Having a free hand doesn’t always make things easier – designing and constructing can be more complicated without guidelines. We were, though, able to try out new ideas like the bright decoration in the saloon. We weren’t looking for a simple geometric pattern on fabric or a particular wood or marble veining, but rather something innovative linked to the great “availability” of this space that already benefits from plenty of natural light. After studying the light and various geometric elements we threw out some ideas and as often happens, by chance or by choice the best ideas come into being. The curved, sliding metal screen in the dining room, a lovely innovative element, means that the sun can be screened out when it is at its hottest, or turn the dining room into an entirely open-air space. These two curved elements, the screen and the table, create a welcoming, harmonious space that encourages social interaction.

V II is a modern reinterpretation of the GT (Gran Turismo) line. We’ve succeeded in creating a genuine trideck within a 45-metre hull, retaining the sleek, sporty lines that are a hallmark of ISA yachts. It wasn’t a straightforward task, generally speaking three decks on a yacht of this side are complex to achieve in terms of balance and stylistic equilibrium. The final result is surprising, with taut lines and generous volumes for a yacht that’s unmistakeably an ISA creation. All the brand’s classic stylistic hallmarks are there, but it’s a new ISA. At first we focused on the exterior design while bearing in mind all the features that owners of such a prestige product are reluctant to do without. The exterior area on the aft main deck and the beach area below presented intriguing challenges. The yacht’s sporty concept involved restricted heights for the hull and superstructure and we worked hard to create large, airy spaces. Creating a garage forward for two jetskis and the service tender, all launched by a hydraulic crane, was no easy undertaking. My favourite space is probably the upper deck with the round veranda dedicated to the dining area and the terrace linked to it. It’s a lovely space, versatile and with total privacy. Generally speaking, I see this type of yacht appealing to a young owner seeking refined, dynamic lines, someone who wants three decks to provide enough space for guests. I imagine an owner whose car isn’t a giant SUV but some sort of coupé like a Bentley. For us the GT look is iconic, this new 45-metre model is the first in this updated series. We have an 80-metre model under construction with five times the gross tonnage, and two 66-metre yachts with a 50-metre currently under negotiation. The Gran Turismo line was launched in 2014 with Okto has been a great success for the yard.

THE ART OF SIMPLICITY by Mark Worden

“Keep it simple” is something of a mantra these days, but it has been the design philosophy of Jaron Ginton ever since he set up Ginton Naval Architects in 2002. His other key words are seaworthiness and practicality, which always come ahead of being stylish. And these qualities are proving to be a winning combination at a time of uncertainty for the market

uch to my surprise, the market is still booming, at least that’s what I’m experiencing, and I think it’s true for other people as well. And it doesn’t seem logical: first, there was the Covid pandemic, and

then the war in Ukraine, which led to the collapse of both the Russian and Ukrainian markets, but other markets seem to have taken their place.” Life is good for Jaron Ginton, the Israeli-born, Netherlands-based designer, whose resumé included stints as a captain, first in the Israeli Navy, and then on charter boats, prior to studying naval architecture at the Higher Institute of Technology in Haarlem. He co-founded Ginton & Weber in 1992, prior to setting up Ginton Naval Architects in 2002. Since then, he has designed over 100 boats. These days he’s doing a lot of work with Turkish shipyards, while the Dutch yard Van der Valk is another regular. Italy is also picking up and that is where he is working on the Falcon 122, a 44.7 metre, which is currently being built at the Falcon Yachts shipyard in Pisa, in Tuscany, and which should be ready for launch “in 2025, possibly 2024.” The interior designer is also Italian: Hot Lab in Milan, “with whom we’ve done two other projects.” The client, who “lives on the other side of the Ocean”, wanted “less than 500 gross tonnage, in order to have commercial registration and unrestricted navigation.” He’s also interested in “chartering heavily.” The brief was for a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Ginton says: “She won’t be fast, we expect her do about 15.5 knots.” She will be powered by two caterpillar engines, with 1312 horsepower, while the fuel capacity will be 45,000 litres. Building work began in January of this year. Ginton describes the client’s requirements as being “pretty conventional, with four guest cabins. The master cabin is on the upper deck aft. The owner will have his own deck, with a cabin and behind that his own saloon, the master saloon. The captain will be in the bow of the main deck, in the front close to the tender garage, so not adjacent to the wheelhouse but not too far it. The crew will have separate stairs, which is normal for a boat of this kind, so that they can go from their accommodation down below up to the wheelhouse without using the owner’s stairs.” There will be 11 crew, including the captain. The owner “really likes whirlpools and so we have two, one in the bow and one on the sun deck.” Other features include “a garage in the bow for the rescue boat and the big tender, with a sliding crane. The garage itself will have two hydraulic doors that open up and you can use the sliding crane in order to launch the speed boat.” The main design challenge came in the form of the ceilings “as the owner is very tall.” When it comes to designing a boat, Ginton says that he and the other

he ONE Yacht & Design is back with our “In the Spotlight” feature. Launched during the tough times of the pandemic as a way of showcasing the best of international yacht building and bespoke production, this special has become a must-read for finding out about and promoting projects, new builds and new ideas, spreading the word through our social media channels, too. Production at every level is thriving, and despite the global economic and political uncertainty and the caution expressed by many players during the latest yacht shows, the industry is good health and is enjoying a period of relative stability. Especially in the large yacht sector. Italy is registering some truly significant results - according to Confindustria Nautica, in 2022 the market was solid and responsive, achieving an overall turnover of 7.33 billion euro, an increase of 20% over the previous year. In the superyacht sector, where Italian yards receive 50% of orders worldwide, Italy is the leading exporter of yachts and watercraft. In fact, 88% of Italy’s shipyard production goes abroad. These results include RIBS and accessories. This achievement is driven by design but technical research and the inclusion of increasing cutting-edge technology and expertise are important factors, enabling builders to develop solutions that enhance the onboard experience. Attention is also focussed on constructing yachts that create the lowest possible impact on the environment. New, extraordinary craft are arriving on the market, a phenomenon also stimulated by the new generations of young owners seeking adventure. The Forbes 400 list last year identified ten billionaires under 40. Over the next two decades, the average age of superyacht owners is predicted to be between 35 and 45. More younger clients means that the influence of Gen Z will change the face of yachting. We shall see! Désirée Sormani

questions to Stefano de Vivo CCO of Ferretti Group How does Custom Line interpret the needs of the market with the Navetta 38? Yachting is increasingly geared towards the concept of floating villas and lofts designed to be lived in while cruising. Custom Line is ideally placed to interpret this trend by offering ever more spacious and sophisticated indoor and outdoor areas that maximise onboard liveability while guaranteeing privacy and wellbeing for the owner. How does the Custom Line Navetta 38 enhance life at sea? While remaining true to maritime tradition, this yacht offers innovative, functional solutions that improve onboard liveability. They include numerous areas for comfort and conviviality, seamless continuity between interiors and exteriors and a new concept full-beam beach club. The Custom Line Navetta 38 also features technology of the very highest quality, involving the integration of new components and systems on board. How was the interior developed? The interior design process focused on maximum use of space through optimum control of all the volumes and functional exploitation of the entire available surface area. Another strong focus was on natural light, with extensive full-height windows creating powerful continuity between external and internal spaces and a feeling of harmony with the marine environment. What was the idea behind Custom Line’s novel beach club concept? The stern area is designed as a signature feature and a unique innovation on our boats, representing a completely new approach to the full beam beach deck concept. The idea behind the concept was to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically stunning. We wanted to create a space that lets our guests enjoy relaxing and socialising in an exclusive environment in direct contact with the sea, while maintaining the highest levels of comfort and privacy. How does Custom Line continue to meet the expectations of modern yacht owners? Today’s owners increasingly want a bespoke yacht that’s tailormade to reflect their own personality and lifestyle at sea. Every Custom Line yacht is a masterpiece, a work of art that tells a unique story and a perfect combination of cutting-edge technology, ingenious functional solutions and refined, eye-catching design that meets the owner’s needs.

questions to Fabio Ermetto Chief Commercial Officer Baglietto Where did you start from when designing the T52 and what aspects of the yacht are you most proud of? The T52 is based on the Baglietto tradition, drawing on the typical design features of displacement yachts by Francesco Paszkowski Design, updated and rendered contemporary. The lines reflect the current market demand for contact with sea and the environment. The project gives me and the yard great satisfaction – another seven have been sold on paper and are under construction right now. As I’ve said before, the T52 is a very appealing model, but its success is above all down to the yard’s solid base, its serious approach and the passion of the people behind the brand, and they’re a great source of pride. What kind of person owns a T52? Someone who knows and loves Baglietto and has a passion for its traditional, timeless lines while appreciating its contemporary look and modern solutions. He or she will enjoy a close contact with the sea and the expansive open-air spaces as well as the generous volumes a yacht like the T52 can offer, even though it displaces below 500gt. Traditional, hybrid, electric, hydrogen...how do you see the future of yacht building in the light of green issues? And will you be moving in this direction? For almost 170 years Baglietto has been a benchmark for cutting-edge design and production, technological innovation and progress, so we’re deeply committed to making our contribution to safeguarding our sea and the environment. In our yard we’ve set up a department, “Baglietto Energy”, dedicated to research into new eco-sustainable technologies. The BZERO project involves using green hydrogen as an energy source and this system will then be installed in an optimised form on our yachts over 50 metres in length. It’s an important starting point that will lead to overcoming the great challenges to come. How valuable is your know-how in the military sector in the creation of Baglietto superyachts? Very valuable, especially from a technical and technological point of view. The military sector enables us to familiarise ourselves with advanced technologies that can then be transferred to pleasure yacht applications. The military approach is much more demanding How did Officine Baglietto come into being and what are its aims? We aim to be a talent garden for young creatives who can then enter the world of work backed by a targeted, high-level training. This involves an intensive design course with the objective of expressing the Baglietto brand in the worlds of fashion, design, furnishing and the maritime sector. The best will be offered placement/collaboration programmes with the yard or other luxury brands.

questions to Maurizio Fabiani Ceo Fabiani Yachts What stage have you reached in the construction of your first yacht, the MY 77’ hybrid? Work is proceeding on non-stop, almost every day. The hull is ready and work on the superstructure has begun. It’s entirely aluminium, like the hull. Then we’ll move on to the construction of the patented stern platform. The two diesel engines (a pair of Man 12 V – 1900 CV units), drive shaft and props have already arrived at the yard, and everything needed for the electrical propulsion – the electric motor, batteries and electric panels – is on order. We’re beginning the pre-fitting of the engine room, building the bases for the motors and mechanisms, and preparing the tubing and electrical cable ducts. When is work set to end? Given the construction complexity of what is our first model it’s hard to say with any certainty, but I’ll stick my neck out and say that it could be completed within the space of a year, more or less. Can the yacht be personalised? Its construction leaves room for the owner to be involved, to adapt the yacht for his personal use. The interiors are totally customisable. How is the interior layout structured? We see it as comprising three or four cabins with bathroom, a saloon with sofas and the TV area aft, a well-equipped kitchen with dining area in a scenic position forward and a large sunpad at the bow that can be transformed into a sofa, with a table. The helm station is on the flybridge and features climate control and has opening windows. The flybridge is fully equipped, the cockpit is furnished with table and chairs and there’s a cabin for two crew with small galley and bathroom, plus a garage. The large windows mean the main deck is full of light. What is your growth strategy? For a relatively young yard like ours, we’ve concentrated first of all on putting together a sufficiently wide range, which at the moment comprises models from 19 to 29 metres in length, in the distinctive dual versions with classic or hybrid formats. We’ve made our name by participating in the main boat shows and this year, too, we’ve been present at Monaco, Cannes and Genoa, where we also presented our yachts in scale model form. This helps us communicate the technical aspects of our offer more effectively, as it’s often hard to put them across using words alone.

questions to Tommaso Vincenzi President of the Sanlorenzo Yacht Division The SD90 is the smallest yacht in your successful SD range, what type of owner are you envisioning for it? SD90 is designed for owners who prioritize contact with the sea, who pay special attention to aesthetical beauty and who are demanding in terms of sailing performance. SD90 is a yacht with smaller volumes, designed with a unique concept of lower and main decks that ensures the maximum livability of the boat, with many brand-new solutions introduced both inside and out. This is a boat for true enthusiasts, experienced connoisseurs who do not want to compromise when it comes to enjoying the sea. Seaworthiness and safety are top priorities at Sanlorenzo. What are the features aboard the SD90 that best embody these values? The SD90 has water lines that were developed in collaboration with Philippe Briand and tested at MARIN, the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands in Wageningen. For years Sanlorenzo’s NPD has developed hulls that achieve maximum seaworthiness. In particular, the hull of SD90 has been designed to ensure excellent performance both at economic speed, around 10-11 knots, and maximum speed,16-17 knots. Stability is assured in all conditions, by stabilizer fins. You have a continuous dialogue with top architects. How does a shipyard interact with top creatives? Sanlorenzo has made its relationship with design and designers one of its points of distinction. Our dialogue with the most important Italian and international designers is characterized by an exchange of technical skills and creativity. Together we craft every detail, challenging ourselves constantly from yacht to yacht. Research into new materials and construction technologies is a key point in our collaboration and we strive to embrace their inspiration within the limitations imposed by the boat’s functionality. This is the third yacht that you have collaborated on with Patrizia Urquiola. How did this collaboration evolve? Sanlorenzo has been inspired by Urquiola’s approach outside the nautical world. Thanks to an open dialogue, our collaboration has evolved to include projects that are increasingly contemporary. Consider, for example, SD90, with its interiors that echo the blue of the sea and use sustainable materials, such as paneling finished in recycled paper. Do your clients generally opt for the architect or designer’s versions of your yachts or do they choose to collaborate with the design team to bring their own input? There is no clear trend. Much depends on the client and the projected use they will get of the yacht. In general, owners are enthusiastic about customizing details so even if they choose the designer’s version they will add a few accoutrements to fit their taste and style.

questions to Patrik von Sydow CEO at Turquoise Yachts What does Jewels represent for Turquoise Yachts? Perhaps surprising to many, Jewels is our first yacht with an owner from the Middle East. To work with an owner with vast experience in the design and craftmanship of jewellery gave us invaluable insight into what we needed to create with regards to the interior. Are the any particularly special achievements on board? The interior of Jewels can be compared to jewellery. The level of detail is very impressive and hosts many intricate choices when it comes to finishes and craftmanship. We certainly had our fair share of practice when it came to gold finishes – both on wood and metal. The name of the yacht could not be more fitting! How does the interior of Jewels showcase the best of local suppliers and artisans? The materials used when creating Jewels are mainly locally sourced. This made it possible for the owner, alongside our designers, to create an interior with a huge range of material options. Istanbul, for example, hosts one of the best locations for marble selection. This, in combination with craftmanship at hand, meant we could work effectively together in ‘real time’ with quick decisions and wonderful material selections. Turkish shipyards are attracting more interest from clients all over the world. How do you see the trajectory of the Turkish new build market? This is a very positive development for all of us living and working in Turkey. Naturally, there are many new entrants with a demanding learning curve ahead of them but, behind this, we can all benefit from an increasing supplier base. A consequence, of course, is that demand for talent is increasing, and we must support this with focused learning and development programmes, clever management, teamwork, intelligent systems etc. What is on the horizon for Turquoise Yachts? We have six amazing projects under construction ranging from 42m to 87m in length – all in all some 10,000gt. All are unique in such a way that they will create a stir when they launch and become public. Our work schedule includes hybrid technology and constant focus on energy efficiency. Our teams are also doing an amazing job in further developing our product when it comes to trouble-free yachting.

Here we present the companies whose creativity improves our lives and enables owners and guests to live sea and yacht in a totally original way. The results aren’t only aesthetically appealing – these yachts are equipped with advanced technology that makes every voyage a one-of-a-kind experience.

Art Underfoot For over four decades, OT Carpets has been turning the softest of premium yarns into sumptuous bespoke works of art for the world’s most exclusive yachts, homes and private aircraft. Now the second generation of the Trautlein family is involved too! by Désirée Sormani - ph. Tim Marquardt / teamfoto-marquardt.de

T

he team at OT Carpets are living the dream: they work only at the very highest end of the market, creating sublime bespoke designs for the most discerning clients. Clients who don’t just want a bespoke carpet, clients that want a carpet that takes you on a

journey, that expresses their most creative ideas and desires. That means each car-

pet is as individual as the person that commissions it with results ranging from the muted to the dazzlingly vibrant. Even better news is that OT remains very much a family business with the new generation very firmly part of its day-to-day running. Daughter Julia joined just five years ago but is already project managing OT’s most important projects, while her partner Max has been providing invaluable support over the last two years in sales, development and installation. This isn’t just good news for the family and the business but also for their clients as the new generation is simultaneously drawing and building on over 40 years of experience in bespoke carpet design and making. OT continues to work all over the world, delivering astonishing solutions for yachts, private residences and aircraft in styles spanning the spectrum from abstract to Art Nouveau and everything in between. What OT brings to the mix is an unparalleled skill in turning client’s dreams into glorious reality. However, that is far from the end of the story. “We do a lot of in-house collections and new design inspiration comes from both clients and our carpet design department. We have two in-house textile designers and three freelance creative partners,” says Elke Treutlein. Collaborations with renowned international pens have produced astonishing collections that chime perfectly with the needs of high-end interior experts too. As has always been the case, OT chooses only the very finest natural materials with 100 per cent pure New Zealand Wool at the very top end of the scale followed by no less than five types of silk. This guarantees that OT’s product production process will remain as sustainable as possible. “We make a completely natural product. Every single carpet is made from natural fibres and natural fibres only, and our manufacturing process is completely artisanal with everything done by hand,” concludes Elke. Sourcing too is meticulous with special contracts in place to ensure a consistently superb standard of quality. Something that has not gone unnoticed by the company’s loyal clientele who return again and again. www.olivertreutlein.com

questions to Olivier Treutlein Founder OT Carpets Could you tell us a bit about the new collection? What is it called and where did you get your inspiration from for it? It’s called Chess Rosee. It was originally an art project embarked on in the year of the new millennium, 2000. It was created by one of the world’s most famous Art Directors and Brand creators, Man Bre or Manfred Bremeier Could you describe it for us, please? It looks like an abstract painting. It is very different from our previous output. Professor Manfred Bremeier was a good friend of mine. He was a very busy man and spent most of his time creating very well-known corporate identities all over the world. The little time he had outside of that he dedicated to making art. In his art, he developed in many different directions, embracing everything from glass to sculpture, oils, water colours and even spray paint. What makes this particular project so special? Did you have to use any very special materials? Chess Rosee was a wonderful creation involving huge paintings, combining a whole variety of techniques from Man Bre’s highly skilled calligraphy and spray painting to contrasts. Who do you think it will be attractive to? What kind of client do you think would it would appeal to? After his death in 2005, Man Bre’s artists went through a period of forgetting all about his creations. However, Elke wanted to honour him and to pay homage to our deep friendship with him. So she decided we should take it upon ourselves to bring his creations back to life. But this time, to ensure they were inspired by our modern lifestyle as it too is a perfect fit for the kind of art he made. It is also ideal for the times we live in and the colours we are seeing and feeling around us right now. Is this project as environmentally conscious as the rest of your work? Of course. When it came to recreating Man Bre’s signature style, we decided that silk was the only material capable of delivering the absolutely smooth result for the Chess Rosee.

98

OT’s new Chess Rosee collection began life as a Man Bre art project in 2000. Now it has inspired a dazzling new OT Carpets design: an homage to friendship created by Elke Treutlein in smoothest of silk, which beautifully communicates its power

fascinating textile arts of hand-made and made-tomeasure products. Luxury Carpet Studio is based on the qualitative excellence of its carpets and rugs, and we also place the client at the centre of our business and the project. Where are the carpets produced, and who are they intended for? We have a production centre in Asia, because the quality of the raw materials is the highest in the world. We make our products for luxury yachts 35 metres or more in length. On yachts of this kind, floating luxury residences, there are no problems caused by damp or direct contact with water, nor is there a preliminary selection of yarns. Who are your main partners? All the big megayacht constructors, especially in the production of motoryachts from 50 to 120 metres in length. We collaborate to with many interior designers active in the yachtbuilding industry to help us meet the wishes of the yards. It’s the same in the fashion industry, where we help fit out around 200-250 shops and showrooms every year. Where does the inspiration for your collections come from? The collections are intended to reflect our clients’ tastes and we draw inspiration from a variety of sources, but always in line with the values that characterise Luxury Carpet Studio, a dynamic company that is constantly evolving. We seek to dazzle everyone who comes into contact with the textile world. The Ocean Collection, for example, achieves extremely high levels of technology and emotion. Luxury Carpet Studio can fulfil every desire with the support of the designers and architects of our team, which can combine creativity with owners’ needs. Game Changer from Yacht to Superyacht by Paola Bertelli - ph. Courtesy by Volvo Penta

A revolution on the horizon. Volvo Penta’s new IPS 40 drive will provide a new approach for superyacht propulsion – dual power input for greater versatility and efficiency and ready for multiple energy sources, from renewable combustibles to all-electric or hybrid solutions

T

he Cannes Yschting Festival was the first important test of how the public and the nautical sector would react to Volvo Penta’s new IPS 40 launched in May. Now they’re here, and they’ve

made a big impression. They were mentioned in almost all the press conferences held by the most important yards like Sanlorenzo, Azimut, Amer, Beneteau, Pardo Yachts, Palum-

bo Superyachts and Ferretti Group, which are set to instal the IPS 40 on their new displacement, semi-displacement and planing models. The IPS 40 units are currently in the testing stage, and Volvo Penta is pressing ahead with sea and bench trials. At sea the drives are already in use on a high-speed passenger ferry plying the waters off Gothenburg. The next stage involves their use on board an offshore-energy crew transfer vessel. The first applications in the yacht and superyacht sector are scheduled for 2025. The IPS 40 is a revolutionary solution where cutting-edge technology developed by Volvo Penta is based on an approach that is unique in the industry – creating an advanced platform that can adapt to all possible scenarios appearing in the near future in the wake of developments in green propulsion. The key to the project is that it is designed for modular use with different power sources – instead of thinking about bigger and bigger engines, the engineers at Volvo Penta have developed a system that links two propulsion units to every individual pod, making it possible to use on or two engines according to the operational profile at any given moment, generating incredible efficiency. In the context of environmental awareness the strength of the IPS 40 is that it is suitable for any scenario. The first step, in 2025, will be the version with traditional engines linked to a compact post-treatment system to conform to the most recent IMO Tier III standards, but the platform is prepared for a mix of energy sources, from engines powered by renewable fuels to all-electric or hybrid systems. The IPS 40 marks the Swedish giant’s entry into big boat sector, building on the success of its IPS project launched in the early noughties with smaller craft and now being extended to ships. This result was also made possible by the impressive number of boats mounting the IPS (over

scend is the fifth generation of the Citation 560XL, itself a descendant of the Cessna Citation V. It will be available in 2025, and if the American company

has decided to invest in this jet it means the market wants. When I first started out on my career I was able to rack up a few hundred flight hours on the ‘Bravo’, the third generation of this aircraft, so I was intrigued by the idea of trying out the Ascend, too, before retiring from flight testing. It looks set to become another aviation workhorse, a machine backed by over half a century of experience, an aircraft large enough to seat nine passengers – twelve in the high density version – on short to medium range flights in a totally personalisable cabin made more spacious by a dropped aisle. Let’s talk about money first – the cost will be between 18 and 20 million dollars depending on the configuration, with a rental cost of about 8,000 euro per hour compared to 4,000-5,500 euro per hour with an annual fixed cost which, if managed by an American agent, will remain between 500,000 and 700,000 dollars. According to information provided, the aisle has 68 inches (1.73 metres) of headroom and the cabin is 66 inches (1.68 metres) wide. Cessna maintains that the new fuselage enables the installation of an acoustic barrier for enhanced soundproofing, a high-end sound system and the Advance L3 Max system, although other systems will be available in the USA. The mock-ups that have appeared around the world reveal 19 USB ports and larger windows (+15% in size compared to the previous model) with wirelessly-controlled shade settings.

Revolutionary in its concept and design, the new flagship of Pershing’s new GTX range interprets the trends of the moment to create the first sport utility yacht – a unique product designed for extreme liveability and high performance by Bryony McCabe - ph. courtesy by Pershing

129

nnovation is a frequently used term in the yachting industry, yet it is rare for a new yacht design to come along that is truly disruptive. The flagship of Pershing’s new GTX range, however, can justifiably claim this accolade. Offering generous open spaces, intrinsic contact with the water and exceptional onboard liveability, all without making any compromises in terms of performance, the GTX116 sees the pioneering introduction of the sport utility yacht. The result of a collaboration between the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari, Fulvio de Simoni Yacht Design and the Group’s Engineering Department, the hull brings together advanced technologies and Pershing’s signature craftsmanship. Further innovation emerges within the elegant and aerodynamic exterior styling: some of the external features, such as the ventilation grills and windshield visor, were produced using 3D printing technology for the first time to obtain subtly unconventional geometries. The layout of the yacht comprises of two decks and an upper sportbridge that can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests across a new five-cabin layout, plus three cabins for five crewmembers. With a design approach that ensures seamless interconnection, the exteriors and interiors of the new Pershing GTX116 become part of the same space, enhancing the liveability on board. Stretching across two levels, the main deck is the focus of innovation on the new GTX model. The first level is designed for outdoor life in contact with the sea, featuring a spacious beach club area at the water’s edge. This space consists of an extended stern platform and sundeck separated by lateral gunwales, complete with hydraulic mechanism to merge the two areas into a single space. The second level is destined for socialising and conviviality. Leading up from the beach club, the cockpit is a truly panoramic space with an external social and dining area. The cockpit also leads into the lavish main saloon, which offers seamless contact with the water due to extensive glazing. At the entrance to the saloon, a large living space offers breath-taking sea views thanks to the possibility of a lateral sliding door opening onto a terrace extending over the water. The sportbridge is another of the innovations introduced into the sport superyacht segment by the GTX116. A deck of over 40sqm is partially covered by a hardtop and features a fully equipped bar area with seating built into the main structure. Forward is the exterior helm station, with up to three sport seats offering guests a thrilling hands-on experience underway. This spaciousness and liveability does not impede performance. Emerging from a significant design effort by the product team to fit all the components into a smaller space, the engine room contains a triple waterjet propulsion system, thus providing more room for the garage and beach area. This hightech engine room demonstrates how innovative systems can be concentrated, while also achieving extraordinary performance levels – the Pershing GTX116 can achieve a top speed of 34 knots and a cruising speed of 29 knots. Sporty by nature and extraordinarily liveable, the Pershing GTX116 opens up a new dimension of yachting.

134

here’s no doubt that the exterior design of the Pershing GTX116 is powerfully conditioned by the boat’s unusual architecture, in which the volumes are shifted further forward to offer more open spaces aft. This has allowed us to develop an absolutely original modern design with a strong personality. Another problem was the need to camouflage the asymmetry of the superstructure, which we did by closing off the forward section of the yacht’s port side with a panel that reproduces the continuation of the starboard hull side. We worked on the surfaces of the superstructure to confer a certain majesty on the boat, accompanied by a dynamic and muscular style that introduces strong design elements and bold shapes. The unusual configuration of the stern accommodates a hangar for the tender and jet ski, so that the cockpit is always unencumbered even when the yacht is under way. The bow-on view is unmistakably aggressive thanks to the low, wide windows and the shield integrated into the stem post. The attention to detail can be seen, for example, in the solution adopted to completely hide the wipers from view behind a casing at the bottom of the windshield, perfectly integrated into the design of the superstructure. The design is highly organic and, right from the outset, we wanted to ensure as much communication as possible between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The stern portal and the large side opening transform the lounge into a sort of covered seaview terrace that can be extended even further out over the water by opening the balcony integrated into the hull side.

he Pershing GTX116 is a boat that breaks the mould, created to take another step forward in the history of the shipyard and offer new ways to enjoy the sea on a high-performance boat. We worked to ensure that the innovation and modernity expressed in the exterior design also features in the interiors, which had to reflect the brand’s sporty DNA. When designing the interiors of a series-produced boat, you have to identify certain signature features right from the outset, while leaving the possibility of customising the boat according to the personal tastes of the customer, who can choose the colours and materials. We’ve managed to create an ambiance that’s at once classy, sporty and elegant, as well as being full of light and having much more headroom than usual on a sport boat. This gives both the cabins and the saloon an airy feel, ensuring that the boat is enjoyable and relaxing both to cruise and live on. One particularly successful idea is the asymmetrical lounge, which exploits the yacht’s full beam by eliminating the exterior passageway on the starboard side and opens out to starboard onto a broad walkway that can be turned into a huge terrace at the water’s edge by opening the swing-down bulwark. The interiors are bright and spacious, allowing dark wood to be used extensively on the walls and pointing up the clean lines of the furnishings. The precise, modern styling highlights the precious value of the carefully designed and produced furniture: the leather applied to the cabinets frames the wood used for the doors, giving the setting elegance and personality.

Above, Fulvio De Simoni. Below, the interior design concept is defined by a dialogue between dark wood in the verticals and pale colour tones on the ceilings. The innovation and modernity expressed in the exterior design also features in the interiors, which had to reflect the brand’s sporty DNA

ur goal with the Pershing GTX116 was to offer our own take on the trends of the moment and meet the needs of modern owners. The new flagship embodies a new concept of modern sport yacht, one designed to revolutionise the segment with concepts previously used only in other yacht categories. That’s why this model has generous outdoor spaces and numerous areas in direct contact with the water. Plenty of space and even more contact with the water are the result of various engineering solutions, such as the spacious beach area – 40 teak-clad square metres at the water’s edge – which can be extended by opening two lateral ‘wings’ fitted with a hydraulic mechanism to significantly increase the available surface area. This innovative and aesthetically sophisticated solution delivers over 35 square metres of extra beach space. Like a sophisticated sportscar, the Pershing GTX116 combines sportiness and the refinement

136

of extreme luxury, a masterpiece of avant-garde naval design that takes the yachting experience into a new dimension by understanding customers’ needs as only Pershing can. Pershing’s new GTX series, and the new Pershing GTX116 in particular, are a clear expression of the brand’s capabilities, not only in terms of extremely high, sport-level performance or cutting-edge technology but also, and above all, of comfort, liveability and attention to detail. In developing this series, we worked hard to introduce elements from other yacht categories into a product that has always been characterised by its sporty attitude. It was also designed for cruising in relatively shallow waters, like those in the Bahamas for example. This is a high precision project that required meticulous attention to even the smallest details, but the result is truly excellent, and we’re extremely satisfied with it.

Revolutionary in its concept and design, the Pershing GTX116 is the first sport utility yacht – a unique product designed for comfort and extreme liveability

S

till riding the crest of a wave and even more capable of exploring new expressive forms, David Hockney (Bradford, 1937) continues to be a focus of attention. Two initiatives place

him in the spotlight this autumn. The Phillips auction house opens proceedings – after the enormous success of the auction dedicated to Hockney in 2022 and the growing demand for prints, paintings and photographs by the artist, it decided to dedicate an annual event to him. The 2023 event, a white glove sale, was held on September 20th at 30 Berkeley Square in London. Robert Kennan, Head of Editions, Europe, says, “David Hockney’s enduring appeal is clear. This white glove sale (an auction where 100% of the lots are sold - ed) exceeded all expectations, surpassing the presale estimate by a significant sale setting new auction records, this result stands as a testament to Hockney’s extraordinary artistic legacy and global appeal. From his early Bradford School of Art lithographs to his groundbreaking iPad creations, the breadth of Hockney’s work was on full display. Notably, “The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, in 2011” took a prominent lead. We’re thrilled that this annual Hockney sale has found a permanent place in our Editions auctions calendar. This sale not only celebrates Hockney’s expansive body of work, but it also underscores our deep commitment to contemporary edition collecting”. The catalogue of works going under the hammer included the “Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Crayon, and Two Blue Washes”, 1978-80, sold for 139,242

euro (estimate 93,000=130,000 euro), while “The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven)”, 2nd January, 2011, reached a record 263,827 euro (estimate 93,000-130,000 euro). David Hockney is regarded as one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries and at the age of 85 he continues to explore new creative forms, including his famous iPad paintings. He has been working with the digital medium for more than ten years now, complementing his work on canvas. The recent shows at the Pace Gallery in New York and Palm Beach and the immersive exhibition on until 23rd December at the Lightroom in London are proof of the interest in this master of colour that some compare to Matisse. In November it is the turn of London’s National Portrait Gallery, which is mounting an exhibition with over 160 works, restaging and enhancing the 2020 event. Attention is focused on the last six decades of the artist’s activities through portraits of six individuals – his mother Laura Hockney, his friend Celia Birtwell, his former partner

There’s even a biography in graphic novel format by art obsessive and stand-up comedian Simon Elliott. Taking inspiration from the artist’s recent works, its images were drawn on iPad. The book describes Hockney’s life, from his early years in Bradford to his Los Angeles period, his eventual return to Britain and his latest successes. “Hockney: A Graphic Life” is to be published in October.

I can express these simply in four main elements – our heritage, a brand’s ability to communicate a heritage of knowledge, artisanality, which gives every object a unique character, rarity, the result of creating unique but reproducible products, and finally focus, a search for excellence”. The CEO then explains that for Visionnaire its products are above all creative manifestations that communicate values. This concept, summed up by the expression “meta-luxury”, invites us to discover everything that exists beyond the object in itself, extending the entire virtuous eco-system that enables the creation of an object that embodies values. “Each of us influences the other. I’ve always been struck by our mutual understanding. Even if we complete a project together then work individually, we arrive at the same solutions in the end. We both have our own vision, seen from a man and a woman’s point of view, but we work to simplify signs with the same values”. It’s not just an understanding between them, but something more. “Ludovica is often my muse. Watching how she uses an object in the home is important inspiration in designing it more efficiently. Human beings are the centre of what we do. You have to be aware of people’s habits. What they do, where they put things. Help them use those objects. Architects look around, analyse and then assimilate their observations and design”, says Ludovica. “It’s no easy task, in fact. The problem is the comfort zone. When you achieve fame with something that makes you visible and well-known, you generally tend to repeat it, and it becomes your stylistic hallmark. We’ve rejected this because we don’t like the word “stylistic”. It devalues your work. We create content, not style. We are a-stylists!” Roberto adds, “When you put together the things we make, you see there’s a thread that links them all”. Serafini and Palomba are involved in a variety of creative fields – architecture, interior design, industrial design, yacht design and much more besides, including photography exhibitions and sustainability. They have collaborated with some prestigious international design brands, like Poltrona Frau, Kartell, Artemide, Samsung, Bisazza, Giorgetti, Maserati and Zanotta. ight from the outset the brief for the Mangusta Oceano 44 project was to provide a modern interpretation of the successful Mangusta Oceano 43, with new content and a radically revamped style that retained and enhanced the comfort that is a hallmark of Mangusta’s long-distance Oceano line. I designed the interiors and exteriors, starting from a new hull. It was important to be able to imagine the yacht’s overall design from the very start – this enabled me, for example, to manage the transparency of the glass elements, a crucial element of the design board. The huge expanse of floor-to-ceiling windows means the Mangusta Oceano 44 is best described as a penthouse on the sea. The complete transparency of the side railings creates an upper deck that is unique in this category, and the owner can use it as a lounge area that also be opened to the side or as an owner’s cabin with private terrace. In the exteriors I wanted to focus my studio’s attention and the Mangusta engineers’ energy on a total absence of railings on the side walkways – no metal at all, in fact, but a screen that is totally reinterpreted in a glass material to emphasise the infinity concept inspired by the modern penthouses overlooking the sea and coastlines. For the interiors, though, my focus was to create a second owner’s cabin on the upper deck with private aft terrace as if it were a single suite communicating between exterior and interior. With its transparent bulwarks the upper deck seems to float in the air – this detail is more reminiscent of residential architecture, but this did not discourage Mangusta’s engineers from investigating its feasibility, nor did it deter me from defying a number of restrictions with a modern, elegant and innovative stylistic elements.

he Mangusta Oceano 44 is a development of the Mangusta Oceano 43, a highly successful model whose generous interior spaces and exteriors have been retained by the 44, but reinterpreted to create the look of a modern seaside villa with large windows providing an intimate contact with the sea. The type of owner we had in mind when creating this yacht is someone looking for a vessel with spacious interiors and exteriors and a constant contact with the sea. From my point of view the upper deck is a very special area - the saloon and aft deck can be experienced as a single large area and thanks to the glass bulwarks with no posts and the imposing opening windows on three sides of the saloon it seems to be suspended above the sea. At the moment the yard is enjoying a very busy period. We have 24 yachts under construction, 12 of which are to be delivered by next summer. We’re involved in several new projects, but we’ll only release information about them shortly before completion of the first unit.

synergy between two world-famous names that symbolise the expertise embodied by the exceptionally fine work that has linked Swarovski and Rosenthal since 2021. To understand the nature of the new partnership in terms of knowledge and research it is best to take a quick look back at the recent history of the two brands. Swarovski, which was founded in 1895, designs, produces and sells crystal glass, precious stones, top-quality diamonds and zircons, jewels and accessories, crystal objects and home accessories. The Swarovski Group also includes Swarovski Optik and Tyrolit, which produce optical instruments and abrasives. Rosenthal has been known and appreciated since 1879 for its porcelain products, combining innovation and creativity. Its aesthetic and quality standards are constantly renewed through collaborations with stars or new talent from the worlds of architecture, art and design. The new Swarovski x Rosenthal partnership has brought together two brands with a reputation for excellence, a German company manufacturing high-quality porcelain and an Austrian brand driven by an exciting creative vision, creating collections that bring to the table products inspired by the idea of light-hearted luxury and exclusive artisanality. Signum is the iconic collection, where a renewed creative vision reworks some of Swarovski’s distinctive details, like the traditional octagonal pattern that is part of the brand’s history and the swan design. On porcelain these hallmarks take on a new identity by being matched with caramel colours, graphic designs, gilded accents and other elements from Rosenthal’s heritage of

In looks it resembles a cardinal marker buoy but technically and conceptually it was inspired by – and celebrates - marine chronometers, the instruments that in the 18th century revolutionised watchmaking and sailing, finally enabling ships’ navigators to determine longitude. As it was already possible to identify latitude this meant a vessel’s position and its course could be calculated with a high degree of precision. These precious instruments were kept in sturdy wooden cabinets mounted on gimbals to counteract the ship’s roll and pitch movement. The spirit of these extraordinary objects is now reincarnated by the UFO by Ulysse Nardin. The past projected into the future, the cutting edge imbued with tradition. A contemporary table clock was developed in 2021 and offered in 75 examples for the brand’s 175th anniversary. It proved a great success, selling out quickly, and returns today in three final editions of

GEMS THAT RECALL A TIMELESS FABRIC Chanel translates Mademoiselle Coco’s love of tweed into exquisite high jewellery. A successful collection that returns in 2023 with a new line of 63 creations by Gianfilippo Versari - ph. courtesy by Chanel High Jewellery

A

love affair amid the spectacular landscapes of the Scottish Highlands became the inspiration behind Chanel’s iconic tweed jacket, now making a return for the second time as a stunning high jewellery collection. A hallmark of the brand, the collection

marks the first time the house has dedicated an entire line to tweed, a signature element present in countless collections throughout the years. Coco Chanel, an iconic figure in the fashion world, revolutionized women’s style, leaving an indelible mark on the collective imagination with her distinctive jewellery choices. Embracing the motto “I want to be part of what’s happening,” she was the first Parisian couturier to incorporate costume jewellery in her shows, breaking convention and avoiding ostentatious displays of wealth. Despite her androgynous fashion sense, she also designed significant pieces of high jewellery, often adorned with beautifully cut diamonds. Chanel’s history with tweed dates to the 1920s when “Coco” is said to have borrowed tweed jackets from her then-lover, the Duke of Westminster. She reimagined the warm, woolen fabric, which was originally woven into various patterns by the Scots, and seamlessly integrated it into her collections. It eventually became an essential element of her wardrobe. As a trailblazer, she introduced tweed borrowed from menswear and adapted it to create women’s fashion that catered to active, modern lifestyles. In 2020, Chanel’s Director of Fine Jewelry Creation Studio, Patrice Leguéreau, translated Gabrielle Chanel’s love for tweed into a remarkable high jewellery collection featuring 45 pieces. The success of this collection led to the continuation of this theme, with Leguéreau returning in 2023 with a new line of 63 creations, showcasing the sumptous craftsmanship of tweed. “I wanted to go further in the interpretation by creating a fabric of precious stones that is light and supple”, says Patrice Leguéreau. “My dream was to create a tweed set with precious stones”. Tweed resurfaces in its pure essence, imbued with a precious intricacy. It offers a display of artistic craftsmanship featuring intricate embroidery, delicate fringes and exquisite openwork. Its play of monochromatic and polychromatic nuances reproduces the fabric’s weave with an abundance of captivating details, conjuring an enchanting sense of movement. This timeless fabric returns in a sophisticated recreation of its precious allure.

The collection features five distinct tweed weaves, each representing a different color and adorned with five iconic symbols cherished by Gabrielle Chanel - the white ribbon, the pink camellia, the comet on a blue background, the yellow sun and the lion highlighted with flashes of red. Five chapters with each section dedicated to various types of jewellery, including plastrons, necklaces, sautoirs, bracelets, brooches, rings, and earrings. Leguéreau explains that each chapter embodies a unique spirit, density, and volume. For instance, the “Ribbon” section celebrates lightness and curves, using white materials like pearls, diamonds, and white gold. The “Camellia” section delves into a joyful world of rose-tinted sapphires and spinels. The “Star” section explores various shades of blue with onyx, sapphire and lapis lazuli, featuring small stars scattered throughout the tweed-like embroideries. The “Sun” section radiates opulence through bold pieces paved with gold and a multitude of yellow stones. Finally, the “Lion” section exudes This page, clockwise:
