It’s hard to assess a watch’s value, given the large number of variables that enter into the equation. There are also some even more special cases, models that are best described as unique rather than rare. Their cost just can’t be estimated, even when the list price would seem to make it clear. This is the case for the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar and Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rally Design Edition, two timepieces recently developed in German-speaking Switzerland by Porsche Design watch division, a design & lifestyle atelier launched in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and now under the umbrella of the Stuttgart-based auto group. The reason is simple – it’s not enough to be able to afford one, you also have to be the lucky owner of one of the 2,500 examples of the 911 Dakar, an exclusive crossover edition of Porsche’s iconic sports car (see pag. 62). order a your watch in one of the Porsche Centres, making you the proud possessor of a chronograph with in-house movement, flyback function and certification awarded by COSC, the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. The timepiece is given even greater exclusivity by a serial number corresponding to that of the owner’s vehicle, a winding rotor that reproduces the design of the car’s rims and the special material chosen for the case, advanced titanium carbide.
