THE NEXT GENERATION Never has a boat of this size offered so many features. Characterised by Solaris Power’s unmistakable design, an innovative 44-foot model is the latest addition to its Open range and represents a big step forward compared to models of the same size by Bryony Mc Cabe

S

ince 1974, Solaris Power has designed and built boats focused on seaworthiness, originating with the construction of ocean sailing yachts to handle the most extreme of seas. The new Solaris Power 44 Open continues this philosophy by

offering staggering seagoing capabilities in luxurious comfort. The naval architecture, designed by Brunello Acampora of Victory Design, has unique characteristics compared to other day-cruisers of the same category, offering comfort, stability and excellent performance in both displacement and planing speeds. Since the first sea trials, the model has reached over 38 knots of maximum speed – exceeding the most ambitious expectations. Firstly, the sharp shape of the yacht’s bow and the pronounced flare softens the boats passage through the waves and keeps the deck dry even in rough seas. The hull shape guarantees great stability and comfort when cruising, and at anchor, without the need for stabilisers. All in all, the design results in a boat for seafarers who want to navigate in comfort and safety in any sea condition. The careful attention paid to the shape of the hull also ensures low fuel consumption, resulting in excellent range and reduced CO2 emissions. Unlike other yachts with planing hulls, the Solaris Power is capable of cruising steadily and without roll even in displacement mode from 10 to 14 knots. Cutting-edge propulsion works in synergy with the shape of the hull and is the outcome of an intense collaboration between Victory Design and Volvo Penta. Since 2005, Brunello Acampora has been studying shapes that are optimised for the Inboard Propulsion System (IPS), discovering that azimuth pods generate significant performance improvements for planing hulls. Moreover, the compactness of the propulsion apparatus yields a noticeable increase in living space: the interiors of the 44 Open compare favourably with those of much bigger yachts and make the tender easy to stow, launch and haul. The absence of the rotating masses of the shaft line and the engine exhausts in the propeller pods reduce vibration and noise. Docking manoeuvres are also simplified thanks to the joystick and the azimuth pods, even with a single person at the controls.
