oing justice to a gigayacht or an aircraft in the pages of a magazine is no easy task. This is particularly true, if, as is the case here at The ONE Yacht & Design, you see your job as much more than simply reeling off performance data, fuel consumption figures, dimensions and water-maker models. If, in other words, you aim to bring alive the experience and emotions of a visit aboard, exploring the atmosphere and amenities of each individual yacht. We go still further by giving the passionately-committed, skilled designers and architects involved their say. We give them the opportunity to reveal how they seamlessly craft the requests of owners, who are increasingly discerning and have very clear ideas about what they want, into yachts. A world of passion and skills poured into every boat and every aircraft, the interiors and furnishings of which are also becoming increasingly customised. In fact, new heights of sophistication and exclusivity are being achieved, thanks to the use of a wide array of materials, clever combinations, and lighting and domotics systems. The Milan Salone del Mobile opens its doors soon (April 4-9). It treats us to a week of design that will yield a rich harvest of inspiration. It is, in fact, a truly vital event for anyone who loves surrounding themselves with beautiful things. A week during which the Italian and international design and furniture worlds get together and produce a showcase that is genuinely unique of its kind. The Singapore Yacht Show runs almost contemporaneously (April 6-9) and we will be there too, distributing copies of the Turquoise issue of our magazine. A wonderful spring to you all.

APPLYING VAT TO YACHTING IN EUROPE: A THORNY QUESTION by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder Floating Life

A

s most of us are aware, VAT is a national tax but it still has to reflect the guidelines of the EU directives on taxation. Put like that, it all sounds so simple but, unfortunately, you can never take anything for granted in the European nautical sector. In truth, no one knows precisely what the correct procedure is VAT-wise. France and Italy have both produced a series of procedures based on territorial limits and permanency outside of the same for “an adequate period of time”. They don’t, however, stipulate exactly what “adequate” constitutes. Other Mediterranean nations apply full VAT because of domestic procedural issues. At the end of the day, no one really knows what to do but we can still be liable to hefty sanctions depending on the particular

interpretation of the local offices. The reason for this confusion is that all maritime-related rules and legislation were drawn up for the commercial ships – the oil tankers and freight/passenger vessels – that dominate the seas in gross tonnage terms. Comparatively speaking, the yachting world has only a modest gross tonnage and thus is not referred to by the legislators that draw up such rules and regulations with the various representatives. In other words, the yachting world has no weight at the tables that count in Europe or in the various national ministries of the marine. We discussed these sore points at recent international nautical conferences but we still haven’t found a way of making our voice heard loud and clear. heard loud and clear.

So that’s part of the reason I write this column: I want to give voice to those who, unfortunately, are voiceless, and to try to shout out our concerns….a lone voice in the wilderness… against the wind…

Lürssen is not just one of the best-known shipyards in the world, but also one of the oldest (1875). What is the main strategy behind its success? We take the responsibility of our 140-year-plus heritage very seriously, and we endeavour to maintain the growth and success of the company and the brand. Lürssen has been responsible for the launch of Azzam (which, at 180-metres in length, is world’s largest private yacht) and a host of other astonishing gigayachts including Solandge and Kismet. Do you think there will be any limit on demand for gigayachts in terms of their length? The dimensions of the yacht are a function of its design, and the willingness and creativity of owners to do what suits their specific wishes and purposes. This means you cannot set any limits. Describe the typical Lürssen owner? A very, very happy individual. All of our owners are as individual as our yachts. Lürssen works with the most prestigious yacht design studios. What kind of technology and research do you put at their service to meet demand for new shapes and forms? We have the ability to offer an unparalleled number of engineers and architects to translate fantastic design in equally fantastic reality. Lürssen has just launched Project Jupiter. What is its most astonishing feature? Something that represents a major achievement for the shipyard? One look at the yacht and you appreciate the effort it has taken to sculpt the extraordinary shapes that are the main features of this magnificent yacht.

[ DESIGN DISTRICT ] PATRIZIA MOROSO ART DIRECTOR OF MOROSO, A HIGH-END SOFT FURNISHING AND SEATING COMPANY by Marta Bernasconi

Moroso is one of the top names in Italian interior design. You also have a great eye for new talent. How can you tell when a young person has “it”? It’s a little bit about intuition but also pure luck. I personally always try to have a diverse range. Moroso’s output includes the mainstream, the big names that represent continuity, particularly Patricia Urquiola and her chairs. But then there are also the other collections created by different people and aimed at our diversified, international market. The result is a very, very varied collection. Apart from diversifying, you also like taking risks with your designs, don’t you? Certainly. I also have a visionary project or two. In 2016, for instance, the designers at Front created a truly unusual product for us. They took a very high quality polypropylene thread normally used for medical purposes and revived an old basket-making technique to produce “Triclinium”. Thanks to the material it is made from, this sofa is resistant to organic materials of all kinds and dries off instantly. It’s perfect for outdoors, in other words! On the one hand, it’s high-tech and, on the other, it draws from an artisanal culture. So do you think that art and design can coexist in successful furnishings? Yes. My adventure with two great individuals who were artists before they were designers is a good example. The very first collection I curated back in 1986/87 was with a cartoonist and architecture student called Massimo Iosa Ghini: he was a brilliant draughtsman and I saw some interesting stuff for a collection in his cartons. Back then he was an artist and today he’s a successful architect. Two years later, I met Ron Arad, who was an absolute superstar as far as I was concerned and was well known on the museum circuit for his metal sculptures which were always seat-like.The Spring Collection came out of simply translating Ron’s art into design. That connection has always inspired me, in fact. It’s a great formula and has produced some of Moroso’s best-sellers. How important is the business side? Design becomes soulless if it gets too mixed up with business. I try to reconcile my work with commercial demands but in the end, I follow my instincts. Does Moroso do yacht design projects also? A lot of them. For a certain period of time, our relationship with the naval sector was a fundamental part of our work. We worked on boats of all kinds, both private vessels and cruise ships. Now we have a person in the company who deals specifically with that sector as it is picking up very strongly again. We got involved in the area thanks to an initial contact with Renzo Piano’s studio and that led to a large number of projects. GIONATA XERRA STUDIO

Clifford Denn has created a delightfully fluid exterior design that is seductively simple yet complex, while her profile draws both on Heesen DNA and gives her a distinctive personality of her own. he Codecasa 43 F76 in the Vintage Series does not seek to dazzle with bizarre design effects – it’s designed

according to maritime traditions and the good practice we’ve instilled in it. All the Vintage Series yachts have strikingly elegant external lines, architectural elements and a robust straight bow, all elements that recall the past. The hull, superstructure and bridge of the Codecasa 43 offer a classic yacht ideal, but they also fulfil owners’ requirements by being comfortable and reliable. The deck layouts are designed to create extremely generous, functional spaces for the crew. We’ve placed great emphasis on the exterior areas, approaching them from the point of view of the people who will use them on board the yacht – we’ve designed the conversation area spaces so they can host striking furniture and create an extremely comfortable environment. For example, although we’ve increased the structural areas on the sun deck we’ve also made use of them as a sunbathing area,

I

’ve always liked the clean lines and classic look of Fulvio Codecasa’s yachts, and these characteristics can also be seen on the 43 Vintage. The initial brief I was given was to design a craft that was classic yet

modern, a yacht that could appeal to a number of people as an “on spec” build. The final result is a threeperson creation by me, Ms Codecasa and the yard’s technical office. The basic features of the yacht are light colours with wood and leather surfaces, three extremely classic elements designed to give the yacht an enduring appeal, while the modern touch is provided by the contrasts of dark and light. The ultra-traditional layout reflects the yard’s way of thinking. This is the fourth in the Vintage line (after the two 42-metre and the 50-metre builds) and in comparison to the 42-metre yachts it features larger main deck and second deck windows that flood the owner’s suite and saloons with a pleasant, balanced light. For the lower deck cabins we’ve tried to compensate for the diminished natural light with suffused, uniform lighting – we’ve highlighted the niches covered in orange leather by lighting them up with indirect sources. We didn’t want to use any special effects, we’ve just hidden a few units in the ceilings and lit the right spots. My favourite areas on board are the upper deck saloon with its warmth and balanced contrasts, and the curved staircase in worked leather with recessed handrail. I think that Italian expertise, Italian artisanal culture and the skills of the architect are all embodied by this staircase.

T

he Vintage Series was begun in 2011 on the initiative of my father, Fulvio Codecasa, who sought to take a step

back to the beauty of the past, placing it in a modern context with advanced technology. The result is this line of yachts where past and present exist side-by-side and Italian style takes centre stage, fulfilling the requirements expressed by many owners, people who like beautiful, traditional objects. This 43-metre craft was built “on spec”, without an end buyer. However, owners who buy a product like this do so because they know they will be acquiring the best in terms of reliability, safety, on-board comfort and environmental awareness. It is, in fact, a development of the 42-metre yachts in the same series, the M/Y Magari, delivered in 2011, and the M/Y Libra, delivered in 2013. All three yachts feature generous interior volumes, but their gross tonnage still remains below 500 tonnes. The extra length of the 43-metre design compared to its 42-metre sibling creates room for a layout that includes a full-beam owner’s suite, private study, skipper’s cabin on the bridge deck adjoining the command station and a hydromassage pool on the sun deck. As the project is based on the Codecasa 42 platform, it’s been possible to complete the build in only 24 months. At the moment we’re fitting out a sister yacht on spec, and expect to finish it in July 2017. We’re also building a 50 and a 65-metre yacht.

uying a LearJet is like owning a piece of aviation history. The name of William Powell Lear, known as Bill, is as important to airplane history as Michelango’s is to art. During 43 years of activity Bill was granted 120 patents in fields ranging from car radios to modern avionics, and none of them can yet be considered obsolete. That’s why aircraft by LearJet, now a division of Bombardier, are regarded with such admiration and respect and have become icons of high-speed performance. The family, which dates back to the 1960s, has now been joined by the Learjet 70 and its big brother, the 75. They differ in the number of passengers they carry (seven and nine) and their range (slightly superior for the 70). Announced in 2012 and first delivered in 2014, these aircraft build on the success achieved by their predecessors, the 40 and 45, which achieved sales figures of 140 and 453 respectively before production ended in 2011. The new features on the Lear 70 and 75 are their winglets, revamped interiors, Garmin5000 integrated instrumentation, more powerful engines and the ability to take off from runways almost 10 per cent shorter than before. This is down to the 3,800 pounds of thrust generated by the Honeywell FTE731-

40BR engines, the most powerful ever mounted on a business jet in this class. At full load its wheels will leave the ground after a takeoff run of 4,400 feet (1,340 metres). The 75 model also carries an auxiliary power unit (APU), a feature passengers appreciate because it enables the air conditioning to run even when the plane is on the ground, and pilots can rely on an extra source of energy for their systems. And no pilot would complain about sitting at the controls of a “legend”. Once on board, passengers will enjoy the totally flat floor plan and the oval fuselage section – while its diameter is relatively small (the price paid for a sporty character) – provides outstanding comfort on long flights of up to 2,040 nautical miles. Bombardier has addressed the requirements of demanding passengers by

It also offers an inverter providing a domestic current of 110 volts AC. The Lear designs have higher wing loading than rival bizjets, so, while the Lear 70 can’t land on shorter runways, it is more stable in high sidewinds and turbulence. The electric steering solution is worth noting, as it enables unrestricted ground towing with no worries for the crew. A typical mission profile would see four people on board and a 70 per cent fuel load. An altitude of 43,000 feet (13,106 m) would be reached in 22 minutes, followed by a cruise at the maximum speed of Mach 0.81 (992 km/h) or a more economical speed of Mach 0.75 (918 km/h), burning 1,700 pounds of fuel per hour (pph) so the aircraft would consume 2,700 pounds of kerosene during a two-hour flight. To sum up, between 12 and 14 million dollars will buy the aircraft equivalent of a Lamborghini - don’t look for the silence or comfort of a Bentley, just enjoy the speed and excitement!

rvine (California) is not your average city. It’s small by American standards, and young. Founded in the early 1970s, according to the

latest census the average age of its population is under 35. It’s easy to reach along the Pacific Coast Highway from Long Beach, 35 kilometres south of downtown Los Angeles, and although it is almost a thousand kilometres from San Francisco Bay, it can be regarded as an outpost of Silicon Valley. A catalysing centre for futuristic technology and pulsating creativity, Irvine is home to the largest companies in the sector. Microsoft, Western Digital, IBM, Intel, Cisco Systems and Larry Ellison’s Oracle all have facilities in Irvine, and Blizzard Entertainment, one of the world’s largest videogame production companies, has its headquarters here. The city is also home to a small automobile factory, Rezvani Motors. Since its launch in 2014 this company seems to have drawn inspiration from the unbridled imaginative flights of the entertainment world for its four-wheeled creations.

hat really sets Frank Neubelt apart from his contemporaries is that he is a yacht designer who also trained as a boat and shipbuilder. A rare breed indeed. That solid grounding has given him

an unwavering respect for naval architecture and has rooted all his designs, no matter how radical, in solid, seafaring fundamentals. Indeed, after spending two decades as the award-winning founding lead-designer of Newcruise, which was then one of the most successful German studios, Neubelt decided in 2012 to develop a new contemporary vision. After a year out on his yacht Beleia, he returned to work as “GYC” by Frank Neubelt Yacht Designs. A collaborator at heart, he also developed “German Yacht Couture“(GYC), 68

Neubelt’s career in large custom superyachts and his signature stamp optimised by GYC Hub craft background created the perfect blend of design and engineering. “Yacht design is serious when you know how a vessel works technically and behaves at sea. Naval architecture is one of the most significant elements in that,” says Neubelt. “To me a yacht always has to be a yacht – not in any way like a space 69

You feel like tiptoeing your way around this hallowed ground because it was between these walls that some of the most iconic big yachts in history were designed: the cruiser-racer My Song, Renzo Piano’s sloop Kirribilli, hugely successful Bénéteaus, latter-day Grand Soleils, innovative Baltic megasailers and, of course, Southern Wind’s high-performance beauties. That’s without even mentioning the revolution the radical Nauta Project Light caused when it transferred sailing yacht signatures to the motor segment a decade ago. Two of the most recent results of this cross-contamination being, of course, the world’s largest private yacht, Lürssen’s 180-metre Azzam, and the Cantiere delle Marche’s multi-award-winning Narvalo 108 del Cantiere delle Marche. In a little over three decades the studio overlooking Milan’s main park has designed hundreds of craft ranging from small sail boats to megasailers, semidisplacement motoryachts and gigayachts, often collaborating on them with architecture heavy-hitters such as Bruce Farr, Reichel Pugh and Doug Peterson. The ensuing diversity is such that it might at first glance seem impossible to find a common thread. But a common thread there is and a pretty obvious one at that. “Regardless of whether it’s a 14-metre or a gigayacht, our ultimate aim in designing any boat is for it to deliver maximum enjoyment of the seafaring experience,” says Mario Pedol, who founded the studio with Massimo Gino in 1985. “The key is to imagine you’re actually living what you’re designing and feel the emotions the family will feel aboard. Boats are about passion, so they have to be beautiful and timeless. We don’t use excess to dazzle. Instead we seek to dazzle with concrete solutions, with choices that define a space, and

to deliver a harmony of form between interior and exterior. That’s the kind of formal equilibrium you achieve in small steps – a bit like tailoring. What makes the difference is the ability – the sensitivity – to recognise that formal equilibrium.” That sensibility is what drove Nauta Yachts to take its sailing experience and introduce it to the motoryacht world. “There is still huge room for experimentation in this sector. We gave our own interpretation drawing on our sailing experience. We put equal emphasis on interior and exterior and lowered all visual barriers (bulwarks, walkways and windows up to 45 cm above floor level) to enjoy the world around. We created various transparencies, lowered and tapered the stern down to water level. Our leitmotif is that we always endeavour to deliver maximum enjoyment of both life and the boat, and to put people back in contact with nature”. One of Nauta’s many current projects is the Air 94 m, an effortless embodiment of the studio’s thought process. The concept starts with the idea that there are three spaces crucial to the owner and his guests’ quality of life aboard. The suite has a breathtaking 270-degree view, an enormous 85 square metre private terrace complete with Jacuzzi/whirlpool and private access

The beach club is impressive too, affording a 50 square metre water-skimming platform in addition to 65 square metres of sheltered space, reflecting the Air 94m concept centering around the idea of top quality onboard living

T

he atmosphere aboard the SD112 is redolent of a very large classic yacht and that came from Francesco Paszkowski when we commissioned him to design the lines for this displacement line. The exterior is a reworking of the charming yachts of the 1940s and 50s. But with great balance between the upper areas and an unusual hull. The SD112 has very harmonious forms with very controlled lines, a characteristic shared by all Sanlorenzo yachts. Their design is not showy – clean, sober forms were the order of the day. The big portholes in the cabins are perfectly lined up with the more re-dimensioned ones in the bathrooms and crew areas, and are a harmonious match for the large superstructure windows which have an opening at their centre to allow even more light in and lend a certain dramatic flourish. This hull’s holiday-focus is clear from the abundance of apertures and al fresco spaces as well as the way the interior and exterior flow effortlessly into one another. Side stairs lighten the design and make it easier for guests to get into the sea aft, where there is a large platform. The hatch that opens upwards also reveals a garage with a large tender and a jet ski. How would I describe this boat? A precious reworking of the styling cues of the yachts of bygone era crafted with the elegance that always sets Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel designs apart.

T

his was the first time that our studio designed a boat interior. It was a very interesting exploratory process, particularly for me because I love the sea and sail whenever I can. We went against the grain and designed this 34-metre with a reworking of the styling cues of a vintage yacht. Instead of transferring the minimalist opulence of a Manhattan penthouse to boats, as often happens in the nautical area, we salvaged the tradition of a naval interior design. This area has a huge cultural identity and so we felt it necessary to focus on the forms of the hull and highlight them. We trimmed the walls in the cabins in a grey oak, following and emphasising the natural curve of the hull. We also worked on the size of the windows and brought back certain curved profiles on the main decks. We worked very hard to create an extension between the aft cockpit and the living area, to break down any separation between them. Everything was designed ad hoc from the fit-out of the interiors (we even had to change some hull details to improve, for instance, the view from the owner’s cabin) to the furnishings and the details of the windows and doors. In terms of the dĂŠcor, we custom-designed some furnishings and then selected others designed by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, Flexform, Hermès and Vitra, all using customised materials and finishes, as well as personalised for this particular boat. The treatment of the surfaces, the aperture volumes, the door handles and so forth, the division of the spaces, all provided an opportunity to explore an area that was nautical rather than residential, and thus follows its own cultural rules and has its own demands. The first yacht was greatly admired by other owners who wanted the solutions devised by the Milan studio for their own boats. This spring will bring another larger craft: the 42-metre Explorer 460 for a Swiss owner.

his was a collaboration that brought together design and nautical excellence to produce truly innovative solutions that still respected the seafaring tradition for which our yard has always been a standard-bearer. The SD112 is the latest step on an ongoing road to excellence. It is our tribute to one of the great internationally-renowned Italian design names. Being able to have one of the leading names in architecture and industrial design on a Sanlorenzo yacht is something of a natural evolution. The solutions adopted aboard Lady Kathleen enchanted other

owners who then put themselves in the hands of that same partnership between Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and our yard. Obviously, our philosophy views every application as a new solution. Every boat is unique, and developed with and for every owner. In spring, for example, we’ll be launching a 42-metre Explorer 460 with interiors by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viels, while in September, we’ll be presenting a new boat that will be the first in a whole new product line, at the Cannes Show. This time, the interiors will be by Studio Lissoni. On May 25, we’re presenting the new project at the Milan Triennale.

Iittala looks to nature for inspiration for its poetic tableware and has a talent for choosing brilliantly intuitive artists to do the rest by Marta Bernasconi

ost of us know Iittala’s work from Alvar Aalto’s iconic glass vase which looks like a Finnish lake in miniature but was inspired by waves in motion. That 1936 classic aside, Iittala has been developing and diversifying its table and homeware since it first opened its doors in the little Finnish village of the same name in 1881. A member of the Fiskars Group for the last decade, the company has come to epitomise a distinctively Scandinavian style inspired by the natural world. Its strongest designs and best-sellers remain its glass products. Interestingly, Aalto’s vase, which is widely acknowledged as one of the most sublime examples of organic design and is now on show at MOMA in New York, is still hand-blown

and takes a team of seven skilled artisans to make. Iittala’s contemporary collections bear the stamp of a group of mostly Finnish designers, but the company has also worked with Italian master glass-blowers. This photographic spread cleverly tunes with the Turquoise theme of this particular issue of The One yacht and design, highlighting the brand’s top-of-the-range items, all of which look absolutely modern despite there often being decades between collections. They date back as far as 1952, the year Kaj Franck’s simple navy and blue Teema dinnerware first appeared, and are as new as the “magic nature”-inspired Taika dinnerware designed by Klaus Haapaniemi in 2007. THE COMPLEX ART OF Nadia and Giovanni Santini adore tradition but travelled the world to look, taste and learn. And now they have become a beacon of fine dining internationally by Marta Bernasconi

temple of haute cuisine that has revived with great taste, passion and humility the traditional recipes of the Italian

Boot” is how the Michelin Guide describes Dal Pescatore, a restaurant on which it has bestowed no fewer than three stars since 1996. This fine eatery is owned by the Santini family, and the great French institution deems that it also exalts “the greatness of simplicity”. Nestling in Canneto sull’Oglio, outside the city of Mantua (in the North of Italy), Dal Pescatore is run by chefs Nadia Santini and her son Giovanni. A second son, Alberto, is the restaurant’s sommelier, and Antonio Santini, Nadia’s husband, is also involved in the business. “My passion for cooking was sparked when I got married as my husband’s family owned a well-known restaurant,” says Nadia, while Giovanni, who grew up watching his mother and grandmother cooking, built on that foundation by studying food science and technology. Travel then further enriched the talents of the two chefs. The Santinis toured the globe, visiting all the great restaurants to learn about what guests that had come from the other side of the world to sample a specific dish, expected from the experience. So they became familiar with what the people walking through the door of their restaurant hoped for. The restaurant itself is near the River Oglio and has a long-standing relationship with water. “My great-grandfather was a fisherman,” explains Giovanni. “I often went out with him and, apart from learning the techniques, I also got an insight into the fascinating world that

The method is as follows: carefully clean around 300 g of baby squid and place in a colander. Plunge this into boiling water flavoured with celery and fennel, for 30 seconds. Cool the baby squid in cold water and then add four diced Sardinian or Sicilian tomatoes. Dress the salad with some extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon juice and a little basil. This is a delicate dish bursting with the flavours and aromas of spring. The restaurant’s sommelier, Alberto Santini, suggests pairing it with a Franciacorta Saben Cà del Bosco, Bellavista or Trento DOC Riserva Giulio Ferrari. Santini has long been one of the great names in Italian haute cuisine and it is refreshing to learn that such enduring success comes down to a very simple philosophy of offering diners the very best you possibly can. But what makes the difference? The passion and commitment of a family that view their work as a journey and the table as a place where they can meet the world and learn from it.

The Yacht Designer Alberto Mancini approached this job with an in-depth study of the Mangusta brand, its characteristics and design philosophy, and then began to produce hand-drawn sketches to sum up every point, every style feature, every distinctive element that has made its mark on the brand’s history and its yachts. It was a long, complex task that demanded an enormous commitment. I also had to enter into the Mangusta mindset and assimilate every aspect of it. Creating a metal yacht isn’t like producing a yacht from a mould, there are technical differences that normally influence the designer’s work. However, after such an in-depth study of the brand’s history, I involved all the people who took part in the construction of the Mangusta Oceano 42, including the welders, in the analysis and development of the new line, making it possible to create shapes and stylistic elements that retain the Mangusta imprint. I think that having the opportunity to design the entire yacht, exteriors and interiors, had a fundamentally important influence on the final result because, in terms of design and development of the spaces, it’s the

best approach to adopt when you want to integrate them into a single concept. One characteristic of the yacht that I’ve tried to make sure conforms to the Mangusta tradition is the relationship between the availability of internal and exterior spaces, which is always high on an open yacht. An equation that’s not always easy to solve on a motoryacht like the Mangusta Oceano 42, but I think that the result, with the generous exterior decks, is more than satisfactory. The link between the interiors and exteriors and guests and the sea – a striking feature that the owner took great interest in and appreciated a great deal – is created by the yacht’s aft. There, we created a beach area that extends significantly when the transom drops, providing the sort of space you’d expect on a much larger yacht. We achieved this by adopting a different, radical design choice, shifting the tender garage right up to the bows. An elegant, modern three-decker with a wonderful balance between interior and exterior spaces. The influence of the Mangusta DNA is clear in the profile, where taut lines coordinate with softer elements. The windows provide a strong dynamic impulse and the bodywork is rich in details inspired by car design, with numerous intersections between concave and convex surfaces

I

’ ve tried to open out the interiors, making them as light and airy as possible, especially through a holistic use of light, a philosophical approach to lighting design that I’ve researched intensely. This involves using the natural light flowing from the outside to the interiors, passing through surfaces that are usually impenetrable, and light flooding in through the large windows present throughout the yacht, together with artificial units positioned to cast an indirect light, creating a sensation of space, of being on board a larger craft. To give this feeling an omnipresent impact we paid a lot of attention to eliminating potential architectural barriers that could interrupt the sweeping perspectives. A lot of the interior furnishings were made to measure for this yacht – of course, this all reflects a combination of the owner’s tastes and my creativity, which I prefer to rely on, rather than looking at what others are doing. When necessary I seek inspiration in industrial design, especially auto design for the exteriors. That’s probably the area with the most intense emphasis on research, and it’s the one where manufacturers provide the most exciting stimulus. I also draw on art, one of my passions, nature and everything I encounter during my frequent

international journeys. My studio carried out some in-depth research for the interiors of the Mangusta Oceano 42, seeking highly original elements, not just for their own sake, as a mere stylistic exercise, but integrated into a setting offering liveability, practicality, and a sensation of wellbeing. On Namasté I’ve tried to create a furnishing and decor project based on a play of colours, sometimes matching, sometimes contrasting, and also on a variety of materials that express a level of superior exclusivity. It’s a full-custom build in the literal sense of the phrase, where every element of the furnishing and decor is specially designed to take its place on board.

because it’s the first in the Long Range series produced under Mangusta Oceano name, and it’s also the first of the new metal builds. The Mangusta Oceano line comprises craft of 42, 46, 55 and 60 metres, and embodies our vision of a long-distance yacht, with large spaces, displacement hull, limited consumption and exceptional range. To be specific, the Mangusta Oceano 42, with a second example already under construction, is extremely refined from a stylistic viewpoint, and none of the details are there by chance. Above all, it’s a yacht where the owner and guests can enjoy their cruise in total comfort. It’s not often that luxury and practicality, together with refined yet totally functional interiors, come together so successfully, but that’s what Alberto Mancini has achieved here – that’s the added value of his work. The omens for the Namasté project were good right from the very beginning – the owner fell in love with a brochure image of the yacht, but he was also won over by seeing that the work of a reliable yachtbuilder, an inspired designer and a passionate team can nurture an idea, starting from just a few sketches but eventually transforming the dream into reality.

In terms of tastes, we range from more traditional proposals to contemporary pieces by international designers. Our Middle Eastern clients still prefer classic shapes, but also have a tendency to experiment, in upholstery, for example. The Yacht Designer Francesco Paszkowski Design

T

he development of the Baglietto 46 Fast embodies two key concepts - to be the expression of the new generation of planing yachts, and to retain some stylistic elements of the traditions that have made the brand famous and recognisable throughout the world. Knowing the history of Baglietto so well meant we started from a privileged position for this process of synthesis, and our understanding with the yard was a great support. On the other hand, retelling a story and integrating it with stylistic elements was more difficult, but it was also an intriguing task that, like all our projects, had the aim of creating a product that would inspire emotions. We focused on several fundamental factors – the shapes, superstructure height and windows. To retain the links with tradition we accentuated the bow taper to create an impression of speed, and emphasised the rounded stern to highlight a typical Baglietto feature, the large stern with distinctive hawseholes. We worked on the curves of the deck structure and the cantilevered elements to enhance the interior spaces, which are large for this size of craft, with a wide-bodied configuration on the main deck benefitting the owner’s area.

In order to accentuate the sleek profile, though, we concentrated on the height of the superstructure, which is more compact. The combination of rectangular and trapezoidal hull window shapes, on different levels, was designed to give the exteriors a more contemporary look. Another crucial element of the design was the idea of contact with the sea. First of all we made “sky-to-ground” windows for the main deck lounge and lowered the exterior gunwale support structure for the walkways at the level of the lounge, bringing the sea into the yacht. Secondly, we have extended the usable exterior spaces on all the decks the forward main deck lounge, for example.

T

he project’s aim was to create welcoming interiors that complement the spirit of the yacht exteriors. From this starting point we worked on the coordination of materials, lighting, and the creation of custom elements. We have taken up elements that are typical of the brand, like the “filter” area between the exterior lounge to aft and the main deck living area. A screen plays a dual role – aesthetic and functional – by protecting the lounge and serving as a TV support on the lounge side. One of the strongest stylistic points is the architectural element comprising the stairs along the wall defining the main deck day area, acting as the principle decorative feature for the main deck. The extreme lightness of the staircase linking to the upper deck contrasts with the backlit rear wall and the two fixed lateral wood panels, in symmetry with the entrance, that create two side walkways towards the bow area. For illumination we used magnetic tracks with adjustable spotlights projecting from the ceiling. They can be moved without any difficulty. The coherence between the exterior and interior of the design concept is also evident in the choice of materials – the semi-gloss rosewood, the only wood on board, reflects tradition and contrasts with glossy lacquered panels on the ceilings and parts of the vertical surfaces, marbles in colours that complement the rosewood for the shower panels and Corian for the bathroom and galley tops, in colours that coordinate with the lacquered surfaces. This interplay of tradition and the future is also reflected in other architectural details like the panels above the beds and the bedside tables – they are made of rosewood but have unusual shapes that light seems to flow out of.

he 46 Fast is the second stage in the yard’s relaunch, following on from the Pachamama (43 Fast) and the 46 displacement line. It’s a long, important step because this model is unique, and it combines many elements of the Baglietto story. It’s a fast yacht, all-aluminium, with technology that we have been deploying for many years – and we are one of the few brands to have done so. It’s innovative, the hull was made and engineered specifically in line with a fast, planing concept that reflects market demands like the limited draught many owners now require. That’s the thinking behind the semi-tunnel props that enable the yacht to plane while maintaining a shallow draught. Another important feature, something fast yachts usually lack, is the spaces. Those on the 46 Fast exceed any average craft of this type. The GRT of 496 is comparable to our 48-metre displacement model. All in all, owners choosing this model will have a fast, light, aluminium, extremely sporty yacht with sizeable interiors. Of course, the exterior areas aren’t as extensive as on a displacement design, but they provide plenty of room to stretch out. The entire upper deck exterior, for example, is a lovely place to be whether at anchor, in port or at sea. Owners purchasing the 46 Fast come from all over the world, are of different ages and will use the yacht in different ways. The younger ones see it as very sporty, gutsy yacht that’s perfect for parties and friends. Older clients will see it as a design object, with distinctive interior and exterior lines. This yacht also has a smaller, 38-metre sibling. The design has already been developed. We are creating it for the Far East, where some ports impose limits on length. Its lines appeal greatly to younger owners who have recently become successful with new enterprises and ideas.

Twelve antique looms weave an ultra-luxe silk that is the product of infinite patience and expert hands. The Antico Setificio Fiorentino’s fabrics are woven masterpieces found not just in the world’s leading museums and homes but also on the most exclusive yachts

estling in the heart of San Frediano, Florence’s artisan quarter, the Antico Setificio

Fiorentino is one of the city’s oldest companies. Founded in 1786, it is now owned by Stefano Ricci Spa, which acquired it in 2009 from the Pucci family to ensure its survival. The Setificio is a place in which time seems to have stood still for centuries and where, as creative director Filippo Ricci puts it “the noise of the looms creates the atmosphere of a great orchestra in full throat”. A total of 12 looms make the Setificio’s wonderful textiles. “Six hand looms from the 1700s on which a master weaver will be able to make about 40 centimetres to a metre a day. It’s a delicate process carried out by expert hands. There are also six further 19th century semi-mechanical looms that can turn out up to 10 metres a day.” Even the Brazilian silk yarn used is absolutely exclusive, as only it is strong enough to be woven on these antique looms. “A yarn prepared on our own warping machines, the largest of which is based on a design by Leonardo Da Vinci. The yards are dyed using a natural method, while the fabrics themselves don’t need finishing, so they are a very green product.” A touchstone for international interior decorators and architects for decades, the Antico Setificio can meet even the most unusual and difficult requests. “It’s hugely satisfying,” continues Filippo Ricci, “because it allows us into the world’s leading homes and its great museums, including the Uffizi, the Académie Française, the Kremlin and the Quirinal Palace in Rome. Although the sample book is incredibly rich, bespoke is one of the Setificio’s specialities. Clients can even have colours and designs created exclusively for them within certain criteria. “We have a 15-metre minimum order requirement to ensure a good balance between our quality and production demands. So we really can meet all and

All of the fabrics in her interior were made here in the Antico Setificio: curtains, cushions, coverlets and bed linen. We worked for months to find the right combination of colours and fabrics, including Ermisino, a pure silk renaissance taffeta, one of our signatures. No description of the Navetta 37 would be complete without mentioning the beach area aft which thanks to the Custom Line’s patented garage hatch mechanism, also creates another windowed lounge. he aim was to reimagine the spaces, volumes and design of the traditional Navetta in the light of current tastes and requirements, but to do that

without impacting on its particular charm. So we crafted sportier, more dynamic lines that still respected the yard’s style, which quite famously centres around timeless elegance, pays no heed to passing trends and is a million miles from the “trying-too-hard” approach. “Our” Navetta had to please owners with a passion for this kind of boat yet still capture the imaginations of others attracted by sportier looks. And communicate a sense of power and security. In addition to all of that, as it is the first in a new series (spanning models of various sizes), it had to have a strong personality, to set the tone for a family feeling for the models that came after it. The forms are very balanced and harmonious but its simpler, sleeker lines are to the fore. They are also underscored by the way the bow stem rises up and lends character, and by the absence of different levels; another new feature is the wide body master quarters which double the owner’s living space, as do sliding or folding doors, allowing the owners to play around

with the various spaces. Even the choice of having very few fixed or inbuilt components and to favour freestanding furnishings meets their desire to be able to freely combine various dĂŠcor elements. The biggest job was, as ever, to optimise the spaces and make the most of every last centimetre because, as we like to say in the studio, nothing can be wasted. We also paid a lot of attention to the various surfaces, the dialogue between interior and exterior and the flows, ensuring that the crew don’t interfere with guests. We totally turbocharged the bow area, which is normally a work zone, and turned it into the incredibly enjoyable private nook. Plus we designed a gigantic sun deck with all the creature comforts. This Navetta drew together all the ideas and solutions developed over years of experience and embraces the architectural world 360° - there was a lot of crossover. It was a challenging project, but we are genuinely proud of the result.

The private area forward, which is hidden away behind curtains and biminis, is perfect for sundowners or dining away from prying eyes. And that’s without even mentioning the sun deck which is enormous and fully kitted out, and the incredibly generous, liveable aft beach club.

his year at the Geneva High Watchmaking Fair, held in late January, Richard Mille exceeded

all expectations when the French watch brand presented just one model, thereby giving it the emphasis it deserves. One of its many dazzling features is its record weight – just 40 grammes including the bracelet. This feat is made possible by the use of Graph TPT™, a material made from carbon fibre and graphene, created in collaboration with McLarenHonda. Technically speaking, this is a split-second chronograph with tourbillon that’s been named the RM 50-03 McLaren F1. It’s made in a limited run of 75, each costing over a million Swiss francs. Richard Mille is well-known among enthusiasts and professionals for the extraordinary mechanics of their timepieces, combined with a distinctive aesthetic created by the use of innovative materials derived from Formula 1. [ The WATCH ] Richard Mille’s crazy idea Born in Draguignan in the Var district of France in 1951, Richard Mille studied marketing and then joined Finhor, becoming export manager when the French watch group was bought by Matra. When he reached the age of 50, after many years of intense work and building professional relationships, he had the “crazy idea” of creating a watchmaking brand unlike any that had been seen before. He enjoyed the support of many advisers, including Laurent Picciotto (his shop Chronopassion in Paris and the activities based there are now cult phenomena), Dominique Renaud and Giulio Papi (owner of an R&D workshop developing mechanical complications, working hand in glove with Audemars Piguet). One Ocean Port Vell enjoys an enviable location in a harbour that until just a few years ago was completely rundown but has now been beautifully renovated, turning it into one of the Catalan capital’s liveliest spots. In 2016, it welcomed some of the world’s largest craft, including Dilbar and Eclipse. Boasting mooring for around 150 yachts of up to 190 metres, One Ocean Port Vell is doing brisk business with numbers of larger craft growing fast. The influx starts as early as May when the Formula 1 Grand Prix is a huge draw for charters and opens the season. The most impressive of these being the special TPA tax benefit scheme, a rarity for a marina, which allows non-EU yachts to avail themselves of tax exemptions on mooring fees and during maintenance periods. Already the winner of a slew of architectural and design awards, One Ocean Port Vell also treats guests to the elegant OneOcean Club´s, a 150-seat restaurant and bar, a wellness centre, business centre, crew lounge and, of course, a concierge service. All around too is vibrant Barcelona, one of the Mediterranean’s, if not the world’s, hottest cities, thanks to Michelin-starred restaurants, designer brands and stores, astonishing theatres and museums as well as a legendary, edgy nightlife.
