t’s spring-time once again and that can only mean one thing: Milan’s legendary Salone del Mobile. A pivotal moment on the calendar, the
show provides an opportunity to analyse all the new arrivals on the international furnishing and design market. Here at THE ONE Yacht
& Design, we feel the design sector plays a fundamentally important role on the nautical market, particularly the gigayacht sector. So we always try to showcase – in words and pictures - the most significant design-related aspects relevant to our own industry. We have always felt too that emotions are the main driving force in choosing and designing megayachts, so it seems only natural to feature the furnishing and design worlds in our pages alongside the interiors of the yachts whose creation we celebrate. In this Mahogany Issue, we bring you Seven, a spectacular Perini Navi 60m, featured on our cover, as her lucky owner chose to speak exclusively to THE ONE Yacht & Design about his new gem. We also explore Sunseeker’s new 40m Aqua Libra and the Heesen Yachts 50m Home as well as the lovely 43m Mangusta Oceanco Unasola from Overmarine. So, in the run-up to the summer and the boat shows that follow it, I wish you happy reading.

[ AGAINST THE WIND ]
TIME SHARE CHALLENGING PREJUDICES by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder Floating Life
I’ve been managing a medium-large (42m) multi-
ownership property in the nautical sector. The financial results have been excellent, but many people still avoid talking about it, or when they do talk it’s always to express negative opinions. It’s all down to the difficulty in understanding and managing a complex activity that demands a hefty initial investment – although this is recouped in its entirety – and in understanding what clients purchasing this service really want. But what’s the point of such prejudices? Let’s demolish them now. Brokers find it hard to understand that this kind of business doesn’t have a negative impact on sales (every share has its value and has to be sold) or charter (the time the client isn’t using the yacht is put up for charter). Jealousy among companies then slows the distribution of a project that, if distributed more widely among the public
could, and I use the conditional for form’s sake only, attract new clients. They may not wish to risk large sums but they are curious to dip a toe into the waters and sample life “as an owner”. The reliability of the service and the size of the yacht available for a small investment could also attract those clients who in times of crisis, now looking better in an international context, had deserted the market. For some time I’ve been hoping that other companies like mine could open up to this service. I’d be very happy to meet other professionals in order to draw up some reasonable, uniform market rules. Very often, though, I find myself at conferences coming up against this internecine jealousy, which among other things has no basis in economic reality. I often have to present numbers and real-life examples, experienced and implemented with great satisfaction.
I hope I’m not shouting into the wind, but that my words will be taken as an opportunity to get together wherever people want to discuss the future of the nautical world

EMILIA LIPARI
HEAD LAWYER MCCNS LTD – MALTA
ANTHONY GALEA
VISTRA MARINE & AVIATION LTD – MALTA by Désirée Sormani
How did your partnership with the shipping company MCCNS Ltd in Malta come about? Emilia Lipari: We began collaborating with MCCNS Ltd to optimise the contractual management of the boats owned by some of their Italian clients. We found that we and the MCCNS management really understood each other so creating the present mixed Italian and Maltese team seemed the natural next step. What type of support do you offer owners? Anthony Galea: Our team can deal with a whole variety of owner requirements. We can work with the client from the evaluation stage of the project onwards regardless of whether it is a new or pre-owned yacht. Mrs. Emilia Lipari’s law practice works with the client on the contractual side of either the sale or purchase and on sourcing the best financing options, be they leasing, a naval mortgage or just a bank loan. Together we can offer our clients skilled guidance to ensure they structure their project in the most efficient way possible. And all in compliance with EU regulations, by selecting the most suitable flag to maximise their asset in terms of enjoyability and profitability. Also, because of our association with technical yacht management company, BR1 Ltd, we can provide clients with better operational support for their yachts. What is your most popular service and why? A.G.:Today, most clients are investing in boats that will be used commercially and depend on our team for support in evaluating the best flag option for business purposes with particular focus on evaluating tax implications and sourcing the best financing tools to implement their plans. What nationality are the owners that contact you? And how large are their yachts? E.L.: Most of our clients are European. The boats we managed range between 18 and 40 metres in length. Has Brexit had any impact on the legal management of yachts? Not yet. The Uk companies and flag remain a strong option and legally sound but we will have to wait and see what kind of agreements the UK and EU arrive at. Obviously, at this very uncertain stage, we can’t give any reassurances when it comes to setting up British companies or adopting flags that are currently EU, such as the Isle of Man or even the British one. That said, Brexit has certainly helped the Maltese flag become the most popular for commercial craft in the EU.

What is your product offer and how would you define the
What trends are shaping today’s interior design?
“Flexform style”?
Flexform doesn’t follow trends, they don’t influence our way of seeing things. Many prefer calm, measured, peaceful interiors that create the ideal setting for our products and help create spaces that generate wellbeing and promote a desire to be “home at last”, in the words of our communications claim. What new items will be presented this year? There’s the Salone del Mobile, the most important international design fair. It’s now reached its 57th edition and Flexform has attended without interruption every year since 1961. Our stand is always packed with buyers, architects, interior designers, journalists and fans of the brand, all seeking to discover new products, fabrics and finishings. This year, too, the collection will feature new models designed by architect Antonio Citterio, among others. Flexform and yachts. What are your main collaborations and what are you working on at the moment? The Flexform style is perfect for the “cosy”, “homely” interiors on board many new-generation luxury yachts. We have a privileged relationship with Sanlorenzo, and we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with them for a number of yachts, some designed by Antonio Citterio. Other important collaborations include those with the Azimut Benetti and Ferretti yards.
The company’s core business is producing padded sofas for t he living area but the offer also includes products for the dining area and bedroom. The values that underpin our corporate project are authentic Made in Italy skills and materials, timeless elegance, design coherence, unequalled comfort and long-lasting performance. The Flexform style doesn’t follow fashions or trends. Our stylistic coherence aims to generate enduring appreciation. The products designed by architect Antonio Citterio during his forty-year collaboration display a discreet, reassuring elegance with essential lines, defining a product inspired by deep reflection and harmonious proportions. What does quality mean for Flexform? Flexform means quality as an intrinsic value, giving worth and dignity to an object created to last and enhance quality of life. Flexform products are entirely Made in Italy – Made in Meda, in fact, the heart of the Brianza region where the company is based. They are shaped by a workforce trained in the region, people with the “wisdom of the hands” that gives our products strength and character. Fabrics, leathers, wood, metal and upholstery materials are selected with the greatest care.

It also ushers in a new era for the famous GT sport line penned by Enrico Gobbi in a superb melding of performance, luxury, sportiness and dynamism. Gobbi has reworked the ISA trademarks to brilliant effect, the large arch linking the aft cockpit and superstructure being a case in point. Also appearing are Gobbi’s own signature continuous windows but despite the sleek exterior, this yacht still accommodates 10 guests in four cabins and a VIP in addition to the full-beam master with enclosed balcony. The fly deck too is impressive, enclosed between two large transparent glass structures to offer wonderfully sheltered sun bathing and great views in one. The interiors feature wengé, ivory maple and hand-stitched leather for a nice mix of the natural and the rich.

uhura was designed for a pioneering kind of owner. Premiered at the
Dubai International Boat Show, Oceanco latest’s offering is a joint effort between the yard, Lobanov Design studio, BMT Nigel Gee and interior designer Achille Salvagni. The 115-metre’s exterior styling is a revisitation of the forms of an early canoetype craft and was designed to evoke a sense of exploration and discovery. The ‘Tuhura’ name, in fact, comes from the Maori verb meaning to unearth, explore and investigate. Inside, East Asia and the Pacific islands provided the inspiration for what Achille Salvagni refers to as a “brushed teak habitat” (floors, walls, ceilings) including thin reveals in gunmetal and natural bronze with tatami floors. A sense of peace reigns. Lobanov’s masterful exterior design can fit any size from 80-120 metres and her naturally efficient, seaworthy hull packs a hybrid Azipod® CRP (contra-rotating) propulsion system from ABB.

he 52M Columbus Tomahawk is a 499 GT explorer with a research vessel-inspired hull. Marco Casali based the
Tomahawk concept on Palumbo’s shipbuilding experience and heritage. It is a full-custom, all-Italian design on a peerless technical platform that offers effortless seakeeping worldwide (the series will ultimately span 40 to 100m versions). The Tomahawk moniker references the 52m’s unique axe bow. The clean-cut design of this explorer vessel is also reflected in extraordinary guest space, quality finishes and superb comfort. Volumes are extra-large throughout. The 75 sqm owner’s suite forward overlooks a secluded 21 sqm private terrace complete with Jacuzzi and sunning platform. The vessel also has the largest ever beach area (200 sqm spread over three levels) and it opens onto the sea. It can fit up to two 12m tenders and four jet skis while the lower garage can stow a submarine or several motorcycles in addition to inflatables or other toys. The bow garage provides extra tender and sea toy space too. When empty the whole area reveals a full-size swimming pool (6 x2.5 m) in a space three quarters the size of a basketball court. There is a unique dining area with an American bar and a cinema/ karaoke space on the foredeck too.

The Owner Ennio Doris
I can enjoy my family with Seven In this exclusive interview, Ennio Doris, chairman and founder of Banca Mediolanum, tells The ONE Yacht and Design about his love of the sea, travel and the human warmth he encounters in each new port. He also talks about his new Perini Navi ketch which was designed to bring his family together by Désirée Sormani
M
r Doris, how would you describe your relationship with the sea? What do boats mean to you? Are they a dream come true or a status symbol? Neither. My first encounter with the sea by boat came about quite by chance: Silvio Berlusconi loaned me his ketch, Principessa Vaivia, to help me complete and supervise the renovation work on my villa in Porto Rotondo in Sardinia. I had no experience with boats at all apart from a Tyrrhenian cruise with the family on a 33-metre charter. But I just fell completely in love when I started using Principessa Vaivia. I like nature: the whole experience of being under sail, hearing the silence, the wind, the swish of the water. I decided to buy her and made Berlusconi an offer as he had bought Rupert Murdoch’s boat Morning Glory in the meantime. My wife didn’t agree at all with that but then she ended up falling even more heavily than I had. Because when you are on a boat, you really can’t think about anything else. What does having a boat do for you? We have a villa in Sardinia with a lovely beach nearby. But the boat gives us the same kind of comfort and convenience plus the possibility of sailing to an endless list of new places to experience new customs and ways of life. Most of all though, a boat lets you cut yourself off from the world and get into contact with nature.
42
Priceless experiences. What are your favourite places? We visited the Caribbean aboard Morning Glory and it was gorgeous but I am very attached to my country and sea around it. I like the Adriatic even though the sea is better on the side opposite Italy. There is a huge number of islands that form small internal seas and sailing is really chilled. I also adore Greece. But you just can’t match Italy for sheer variety. We have some real gems and I remember each and every one very clearly. Lipari has the most delicious Louvar fish rolls while the “Taverna Anema e Core” on the island of Capri has the wildest dancing. It’s extraordinary. I like to savour the beauty of the sea, traditions and people. Why did you go back to Perini Navi for your new boat? When I first stepped aboard Principessa Vaivia (a Perini), I realised that this was the best way to sail. I love Perini yachts because they marry noise-free sailing with the comfort of a motorboat. I have also got to know Fabio Perini: he’s a genius. His automatic sailing boats are absolutely unique. There’s nothing like them anywhere in the world. Do you ever take the helm yourself? No, no… I don’t touch a thing. I like being carried along without having to make decisions. I am already at the helm in my office. I
work 11 and a half months of the year: I’m an entrepreneur and, as such. I hardly ever rest so once I am aboard, all I want to think about is relaxing. Why did you chooose Dante Benini’s studio? We organised an event for Mediolanum’s clients in Padua and Benini was one of the speakers. Dante was showing us his work – everything from skyscrapers to bridges. He also showed us his boats. You can see the passion behind his work in every single one of his projects. It was love at first sight. It’s a big leap from a 42m to a 60m... It’s true - it was a huge leap. Principessa Vaivia spread 600 square metres of sail but Seven spreads around 2,100 and even her hull is four metres wider. Again it all happened by chance: we weren’t thinking about changing. Fabio Perini suggested a yacht that was already building, and my son and I decided it was a good idea because it would allow us all be together in one spot. So you take all the family sailing, including your seven grandchildren? How did that influence the interior design? It had a major impact. Every one of us has different needs because there are different generations aboard: from my little 8 year old grandson to me – and I’m 78! We all had input into the interior design but my son Massimo and my wife did most of the work. It was very important for my wife in particular that the boat be elegant and simple. Which is very much Dante’s style too. Massimo has more modern tastes and talked to the architect about what he wanted. The result is just the right balance between the two generations. My son also loves sailing smaller boats and my grandson water-skis. So we have a Laser, jet skis and a gym area aboard to keep everyone happy. So what did you ask for? I like the treadmill for a bit of exercise aboard. I can’t sunbathe – I swim early in the morning and late in the evening. I put two treadmills and an exercise bike in a shaded area aft. So when Seven is at anchor I can have my little stroll in the shade. I also asked for a sofa I could read on. What is your favourite thing about Seven’s design? And your least favourite? The automatic genoa system created by Perini which wasn’t part of the original plan. It’s a complete first and was subsequently requested by another owner. This boat has one defect: as she is a 60m, you’re a bit further from the sea. Heeling close-hauled aboard Principessa Vaivia, you could touch the water with a finger. What does Seven represent to you? She represents my family. The fact that we really all get together for a few days every year. And that I can enjoy the
Boats offer us the comfort of a villa combined with the ability to get to an endless different places. Most of all though, a boat lets you cut yourself off from the world and get into contact with nature. And that is priceless
most important thing in my life as a result. Where do you feel best aboard? With Principessa Vaivia, it was the stern. But aboard Seven, the foredeck will be brilliant too: there’s even a space for having lunch or dinner. It will always be nice and airy even when you’re not underway, too. Under the sails and in the shade. I think it’s a spot I’ll be using a lot. Seven: is the name just a reference to the number of grandchildren you have or is it for good luck? Both. It’s a coincidence. Seven is a Biblical number and a lucky number too. I believe in God-incidences. My life has been full of lucky Godincidences.

even is the third 60m built by Perini Navi and a fourth is already in build now. The 60 family followed up the hugely successful 56 series of which 10 were launched. It was born of a desire to create something new, something bigger but still under 500 GT mark. It was a tough challenge but the result is a spectacular boat, an evolution of the 56 but more powerful with a deeper keel (sliding – extending from 4.3 to 12.3 metres). She’s also a more slender, sportier yacht with a compact deckhouse. There is a big emphasis on exterior space and having a smaller deckhouse freed up the space for a

magnificent forward cockpit that is absolutely my favourite place aboard. Very few yachts have one anything like as beautiful. But the big aft cockpit and signature Perini fly bridge are just as good. Seven fully respects the classic Perini Navi aesthetic canons: she’s a timeless yacht, a real thoroughbred. Truly eternal. She was designed with an unusual sail plan spread on two aluminium masts with spreaders that are carbon like the rest of the rig. The steering console is on the fly with all the naval functions and sail plan controlled from there. There is a second

helm station indoors forward of the main saloon that offers full control of the boat, part from the sail system. When Ennio Doris chose this 60m, the hull was almost completed. He saw it and liked it because it was perfect for the kind of family use he had in mind. He only asked for a few exterior modifications. For example, he wanted the sun pads in the forward cockpit replaced by a large dining area. He also asked for lots of sun canopies everywhere. Lastly, rather than having two tenders, he opted for just one and used the resulting free space for a whole slew of toys that his family would enjoy.

even’s owner Ennio Doris and I got to know each other by chance at a conference. I had the opportunity to talk about my work there and a while later got a call. It was the perfect relationship: we understood each other instantly and everything went very smoothly. His brief was clear: he wanted a boat for his family. Not something to show off. The family took a very active part in the deciding the style of the yacht, following the development process every step of the way, including selecting the woods and décor. Seven is a 60m with 60,000 details. Nothing was left to chance. She was researched right down to the very last detail. Almost obsessively so. But we were given carte blanche in our work. We were responsible for everything, including the layout of the interior spaces. We revolutionised the existing layout for the 60m ketch platform. We are architects but we don’t do boats so we started with the layout. We managed to create efficient, liveable spaces, particularly on the

lower deck, far superior to other craft of similar dimensions. We are used to striving for efficiency to the square metre – efficiency is a growing focus in the office and real estate worlds. Generally speaking, we’re real colour advocates. We created three very colourful towers in Moscow. But this design demanded neutrals, such as beiges, whites. In a boat that is 60 metres long and 2.02 high, you can’t perceive its volume and spaces when you walk in so that means evanescent colours have to be used. We used a particular type of upholstery that also had an evanescent quality so that when the light went on, its pattern created an optical effect that extended the perspective. Also in there are special LEDs that you don’t see when they’re on and which also amplify the spaces. The aim was to give the illusion of space even when there wasn’t any. We managed to look beyond the normal with this boat – we designed it to be lived by three generations: father, children and grandchildren. It’s a real game-changer.
“We work mainly from sketches….we do a lot of drawing and we do it well…,” explains Dante O. Benini (left in photo with partner Luca Gonzo). At the development stage, the drawings are done by overlapping sheets of paper or sketches on the basic plan, just as Carlo Scarpa, with whom Benini trained, used to do

unique Italian brand, new Italian partners, an Italian owner, an Italian builder, an Italian flag, and an Italian Captain with an Italian crew: my baptism of fire at Perini Navi is a delivery that is outrageously Italian! And I could not have hoped for more because I truly believe that Perini Navi is the embodiment of Italian excellence. Seven is a family yacht for a second-time Perini Navi owner. It has all the features of what it means to be Perini, as it will sail around the world in comfort and safety with the owners’ family aboard, and in the simple luxurious style that is the hallmark of the brand. My first surprise at Perini Navi, following my appointment last May, was to discover how extraordinary the relationship between the company and its select group of owners is: passionate, competent, enthusiastic and extremely loyal. I thank the owner for his trust, his patience and his wisdom during the entire building process. Even though I arrived only a few months before the launch party, I learnt a lot from this experience and I’m extremely proud of the opportunity to work with this family on their wonderful yacht. Seven is the third of our 60m series, with a fourth under construction for a US owner. She is a comfortable, fast cruising yacht with an ocean-going spirit and a ground-breaking new Perini Navi sail handling system that includes a totally automated gennaker. Incredible! The new Perini Navi sail handling system featured on Seven provides 20-second automatic tacking – speeds that not even the most professional racing crew can achieve on a yacht of this size. Even the gennaker is handled by a brand new technology. The interior design of the yacht was conceived by Dante O. Benini and immediately very deservedly won the Boat International Design Award for lighting: a rare achievement for an Italian builder with an Italian architect. But the lighting on Seven really is innovative and unique, as it constantly shifts and changes like the weather, providing different tones and atmospheres for each different moment of the day - or night.

Décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris in 1925. The event officially marked the transition
from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, a movement bursting with an unprecedented abundance of design trends. Art Deco immediately had a tremendous impact on the auto industry, and cars were suddenly transformed from square-bodied, coach-built vehicles into streamlined fourwheeled beauties where for the first time aesthetic appeal played the leading role in their creation – and the result was the quintessence of luxury in a futuristic form. Almost a century later this revolutionary approach has once again been adopted by the creativity and style studios at Mercedes-Benz, the manufacturer that more than any other was able to interpret the new aesthetic dictates of design in the 1920s and 30s, creating a series of motorised masterpieces. And it’s still in their blood – the new Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, developed under the artistic guidance of Gorden Wagener, Daimler AG’s head of design, deliberately looked to the style elements, classic proportions and shapes typical of the Art Deco period. Low-slung lines, sports configuration and huge bonnet. For the moment it remains a concept car, like all the Vison designs by Mercedes, and as befits such creations of pure excellence it was launched not at

The event attracts the greatest experts and acclaimed luminaries in the field – and they have deep pockets. It’s here that it soon becomes clear whether or not the entrants have what it takes. The fabric of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet’s hood (the only place this material appears on the car) is woven with a rose gold thread, creating a striking contrast with the bodywork in “nautical blue metallic” colour, as the brand’s style office has named it, but harmonising perfectly with bright white of the nappa leather interior. It is padded like the finest Chesterfield, but with some futuristic touches – for example, every single button is emphasised by a backlit Mercedes star in blue. The innovative techno theme is also taken up by the glass fascia-display embracing the entire cabin, and a transparent central tunnel where blue fibre optic cables simulate the flow of electricity feeding the 750 hp engine – because this is, in fact, an electric car. A high performance one. The designers have also taken their cue from the yachtbuilding world, like the open-pore elm flooring with aluminium inlays – a first for the industry – the handrail-inspired exterior chrome mouldings and the sloping boat-tail rear. You have to blend all the features, without attaching too much importance to one of them. Don’t stick to one golden rule and say nothing else matters, because everything else matters.” But Frank does believe that increasing emphasis should be placed on fuel efficiency. “Carrying a lot of fuel in itself means burning fuel, but if you burn less fuel, you can have smaller tanks.” He believes that fuel efficiency is “the challenge of modern times. We must be careful with fuel consumption. It’s good for the environment, it’s good for the clients, but it’s good for costs because smaller engines cost less.” He concludes: “I think the key thing today is to design boats that have the lowest fuel consumption,” but he adds: “you don’t get an award for that, though!”

Spadolini founded his studio in 1978, but he grew up in a world of design and images – one grandfather was a painter, the other an architect, his mother and father were architects and his father held Italy’s first chair in industrial design. The family DNA is expressed through his creative process, which always starts with, in Spadolini’s words, “A table and a pencil”. “My wife has a wonderful collection of drawings I’ve made on restaurant napkins or odd bits of paper. My concepts always begin with an idea that I then hand-draw”. Rosetti’s latest concept, an 85 metre yacht developed in 2017, started out like that and during their initial meetings Spadolini and Fulvio Dodich, president of Rosetti Superyachts, always discussed his sketches. “The drawings are then transferred to computer”, he says, “A process I follow very carefully so that I can be sure the philosophy behind my initial concept remains unchanged when it’s transformed first into 2D then 3D”.

Translating the family feeling of a brand famous for its waterjet-powered fibreglass opens to a displacement yacht was not easy and so I’m very proud of the result. I spent a long time studying blackand-white photographs of the yard’s iconic boats, past and present, and tried to reimagine them as a trideck with a more modern personal touch. Superstructure “tails” with an exhaust pipe tip-look are part of the Mangusta DNA. Here, however, I have reinterpreted them in a more elegant, refined manner that I feel is better suited to a certain kind of seafaring that is completely different to the Open version – just as the two boats’ ranges are very different. The stern – which is not too rigid and straight - also retains an angle that is quite powerful and muscular. This lends power and is reminiscent of the stern forms of the historic Mangusta Opens. One of the most important new features introduced since the first unit is the stern platform which has two sets of steps and is integrated into the stern hatch. This is a more classic and also more functional solution than Namaste’s. We also raised the bow’s game with an infinity pool and larger cushions. Onboard liveability and transparency were also optimised, particularly on the upper deck, with larger windows and modifications to the superstructures. That choice will be repeated on the third and four vessels in the series too.
82
The infinity pool is one of Unasola’s signatures and is on the foredeck which is normally a working area but here repurposed for guests. The sketch below highlights the superstructure “tails - a Mangusta signature here recrafted to fit in with the elegant, patrician style demanded by a displacement design

hen it came to the interiors, the owner went classic for the cabins and master suite. He personally selected the décor in agreement with my studio which did the work, and with the yard. I am very satisfied that the geometries I suggested still worked despite a change of materials and colours. In the main saloon on the main deck, we got rid of some structural features, specifically two pillars, to break down the visual barriers and amplify the available space, creating an enormous open plan area. One major element that characterises the whole boat is light, which filters in through the deck floors, floods in through the large windows and shines through the entire interior, creating magical colour effects, thanks to the extensive use of glazing. The same applies to the “hidden” lighting, which is soft and perfectly integrated into the structure and with the furnishings. The colour palette centres around creams, dove grey and grey. It is used to create a chiaroscuro, gloss-matt effect that the owner was very keen on. It is very

successful, in fact, and perfect for a yacht of this kind. The overall effect is balanced, minimalist and refined at once. I personally feel that the master cabin is one of the most spectacular areas aboard, thanks to the large window and openable balcony. The bathroom gets its light through a skylight cut into the upper deck and that changes depending on the time of day and the weather, creating lovely visual effects. The stairs too is the product of the art concept I suggested when we were at the first vessel stage: the three chromed steel elements look as if they are supporting the three main steps leading to the upper deck. They mirror the shape of the fan and the overlap, and instantly recall the material the yacht is built from. Unasola has proportions that are highly appreciated in this category of yacht and demonstrate that Overmarine’s new line was a very smart move by the yard which has nothing to fear in terms of quality, aesthetics and reliability from competitors that have been working in “metal” for longer.
Refined detailing and carefully selected materials characterise the interiors. The stairs to the upper deck features floating steps and three original customised chromed steel elements. Left, the conversation area on the sun deck, featuring a steel and glass coffee table between the sofas, has a skylight in its floor that draws light into the decks below

hen the Overmarine Group entered this new market segment, it brought with it the kind of values that come from always being in the hands of the same family of shipbuilders, the Balduccis, and the experience, skills and technological knowhow acquired in over 50 years in business. We offer our clients three product lines: fast, sporty opens that are very much our tradition, displacement yachts and fast displacements. All feature innovative technical content, have a family feeling in terms of their lines and are built with meticulous care. The metal, like the composite, is made crafted entirely in-house. In this case, in our two new specialist facilities in Pisa. To reflect the Mangusta soul, our ships have to be technologically advanced, well-built and beautiful with high standards of onboard comfort and a perfect balance of exterior and interior spaces. The Mangusta Oceano Line stands out from the crowd because of its exclusive combination of the brand’s core values applied to trideck long-range vessels. This manifests in excellent liveability, ergonomics and owner, guest and crew space. This 43m is unique of its kind, offering technology and stylish content combined with lifestyle elements typically only found on much larger craft. We lavished particular attention on comfort: noise thresholds are very low and vibration has been reduced thanks to model-based studies conducted with specific software (FEM and SEA) followed by the adoption of solutions designed to improve and optimise all the installations. Specifically, a lot of work went into lessening the impact of some noise sources – piping, exhaust gases and fins. Two examples of the yacht’s construction quality are the bulb in which the welds were specially crafted to optimise fluid-dynamic efficiency and thus fuel consumption, and the hard top which is made from welded, box aluminium. Some of the designers’ styling suggestions really demanded serious thinking and design skill – the stern hatch, for instance, is a masterpiece of design and construction. The interiors are spectacular too, not just because of the sheer quantity of the materials and the work that went into sourcing and selecting them, but also how they were combined.
86
From the sun deck to the beach club, Unasola’s open air spaces are generous and extremely comfortable. The stern hatch opens out onto the sea to create it and is the result of cutting-edge Mangusta technology

bjects that speak the language of painting, sculpture, decoration and architecture. The Fornasetti story is a fascinating adventure that began in Milan in the early 20th century, and saw the brand eventually gain the international fame it enjoys today. Following in the footsteps of his father, a highly cultured man and eclectic artist, Barnaba Fornasetti is now at the helm of the company, guiding it with the same pioneering spirit it has displayed since the very beginning, and through collaborations and licensing agreements he has stamped his unmistakable mark on all aspects of the modern home – ceramics, tiles, fabrics, carpets, wallpaper and much besides, a multifaceted family of objects that share the irony and exclusive language that are the hallmarks of a company based on artisanal excellence. Barnaba Fornasetti’s re-editions are complemented by the so-called “reinventions”, new objects that draw inspiration from the brand’s vast archive. The fantastic marine world depicted in these pages is a very apt metaphor for the Fornasetti brand’s vivid creative and experimental nature. Piero created the first decorations on this theme in the late 1940s. At first they were intended to adorn silk foulards, but they were then applied to a range of objects including screens, trays and plates. The “Sirene” and “Pesci” plate sets are re-editions, while the “Grande Pesce” table is a reinvention by Barnaba Fornasetti. The “Tema e Variazioni” porcelain is based around a series of recurring themes - harlequins, playing cards, the sun, hands – but the real focus of attention is the magnetic face of a woman, Lina

Born in Denmark just over forty years ago, he honed his talents through a series of crucial professional experiences – it’s impossible to list them all, so we’ll just mention his first jobs in 5 star hotels, a period when still young at a 2 Michelin star restaurant in Belgium, winning three medals (bronze, silver and then gold) at the Bocuse d’Or and the three Michelin stars awarded to the restaurant where he is the creator and driving force, Geranium in Copenhagen. Experiences which, says the chef, “Helped me become what I am now”. Listening to a description of his way of cooking is a spellbinding experience – it’s easy to feel you are suddenly surrounded by woods, caressed by the rustling branches to the sound of boots sinking into the damp soil. “Where does my concept of cooking come from? My childhood, definitely. It was spent in close contact with nature, and has played a vital role. Then I arrived in this lovely place, with its garden, a wealth of nature, the ocean…it’s near the centre, too. In short, I looked around and tried to work out what I could do. I draw a lot of inspiration from the changing seasons, the effect they have on the landscape always gives me a new creative stimulus. Even a tree that has shed its leaves is a source of inspiration for me”. There is a close bond connecting Rasmus Kofoed to the natural world, and it

he main exterior feature of the 131 Yacht Sunseeker is the deep-V hull which offers safety, performance and amazing seakeeping. Aqua Libra has exterior living spaces laid over three decks and some very well-appointed luxury living spaces, which gave us an incredible blueprint to explore and develop. With this particular 131 Yacht we wanted to use new exterior deck arrangements that use deep lounge-style seating to provide the ultimate in comfort for the owner and his guests. On the main deck, aft of the saloon, is a shaded and generous seating area, with a wraparound U-shaped sofa, large coffee table and oversized chairs, creating a real feel of extra comfort throughout all the exterior spaces. We spent a lot of time working very closely with the owner and wanted to meet all his needs. We decided that the external sky deck and upper deck aft cockpit should be lengthened by approximately two metres to create additional deck space by accommodating a new bar and extra seating. In keeping with the theme of ‘voluminous whilst comfortable’, we created a fabulous sundeck, complete with wet bar, al fresco dining, sun pads, chaise loungers, deluxe Jacuzzi and partial shade. We placed particular emphasis the dining table with the huge barbeque on the upper deck as well as the sunbeds and the bar on the sky deck.

Interior Design Stuart Jones, Interior Design Manager
T
he success of every 131 Yacht interior design project is down to the design team’s relationship with each owner. This was acutely evident when we met the Aqua Libra owner for the first time. We understood quite clearly their dreams and aspirations for their new yacht and they provided sufficient information to enable us to create a special interior that was refined, elegant and individually styled. One of our main objectives was to accentuate the feeling of space and light. The 131 Yacht includes a unique glass façade treatment with large windows that provide a penthouse feel. This is combined with simple lines and details to create a pure, serene and flowing interior. We were particularly focused on special details in the bespoke furniture and fittings, and these were designed using rich dark woods with contrasting light lacquers. This created a very ‘East
meets West’ style. The darker elements sit against a neutral lighter envelope thus accentuating the finer details and this promoted a very tailored, balanced contemporary look. The general architectural interior is complemented with a blend of soft textural fabrics and wall finishes, and these were carefully selected by the owner’s wife from a range of stylish options we presented. This stage was extremely detailed with unique sofas, armchairs, dining furniture, special bed designs and accompanying embroidered linens were all designed & manufactured to suit the bespoke interior. Once the interior styling was agreed, we presented a range of special crockery, glassware and table cutlery options. We also worked with decorative lighting specialists and selected a range of exquisite lighting elements throughout the interior design. No project interior is left undressed and we spent time working with the owner and coordinating all the decorative interior accessories, even down to bespoke leather shoe boxes and special deck lanterns. The end result is cohesive and very personal to the owner. It is a project we are all very proud of.
The interior design team concentrated in particular on the detailing of the bespoke furniture and fittings which are made from rich dark woods with contrasting light lacquers for an ‘East meets West’ effect. The owner played an active role in the process to ensure the yacht was tailored around his personal tastes

he design brief asked for a straight bow and generous use of glass. These are just two of the design features that make Home a cut above the rest. Her chiselled bow with its sharp lines gives her progressive buoyancy when carving through rough waters, not to mention good seakeeping capacity, while her effective spray rails help to keep the bow dry. Her angular shapes continue with the rectangular openings in the bulwarks, the use of straight sliding doors only (there are no rounded glass elements), and saloons tapered to give an emphasised elegance to the aft area. Home boasts a striking profile and headturning aesthetic, with a design that allows for a larger amount of space forward on the main deck. She boasts vertical and horizontal elements that yield a calm and elongated silhouette, but there is still a reference to the soft-lined Heesens of previous years. This is beautifully exemplified by the mast foot on the top deck which rises up like a wing and supports the roof in a romantic reference to Heesen’s design heritage. There are no less than three separate spaces on board Home that provide impressive views and a clear visual line of both the water and the sky, thanks to full-height windows and the lack of architectural barriers: the Owners’ suite, the aft saloon and the sky lounge, one of the most outstanding areas on board. The wide, sweeping central staircase in the aft saloon, masterfully proportioned in keeping with the bulwarks, leads directly out on to the large fixed swim platform, where there is ample space for sun loungers, and which makes Home particularly attractive and open from the aft end. Awash with natural light and clear, uninterrupted visibility, the saloon provides direct access to the open stern and deep platform, inviting guests to swim in the open waters, as well as making for an elegant space from which to receive guests from the tender.

n line with the owner’s brief, we created a consistent and memorable design. The owner had asked for an easy, clean design that matched his lifestyle, and put exterior views and landscapes into the foreground. It was not easy for us to create a design that was rich and simple, linear and extremely complex all at the same time. As the Owner requested, our design provides a sense of pared-down emptiness internally that allows outdoor vistas to take centre stage. We succeeded in doing this by discarding conventions and introducing some seriously refreshing thinking. We stripped away all unnecessary decorative elements and focused on what really needed to be there. Home’s interior is not about the lack of illustrative elements, but rather the careful choice of where and how to use them. The colour scheme balances the yacht’s design, declutters it and helps it breathe. The basically two-tone palette features no less than 14 different hues of white. Fabrics, leathers, and lacquered surfaces are in polar white contrasting with the warmth of teak, while iconic deep red and burgundy pieces of loose furniture catch the eye and juice up the design. Two main veneers - brushed Spruce and grey Koto - are used in different finishes and hues throughout the yacht. Conviviality is a major issue on board, so the bar on the
126
Sun Deck, for instance, is a main socialising point. The Owner asked for a design feature that had both aesthetic and functional qualities. We designed a bar counter with an asymmetric, organic shape which gives character to the whole deck and acts as its focal point. Throughout the yacht, linearity and clean design create a fresh and extremely relaxing atmosphere, as the Owner requested. Home was a challenging yet very rewarding project for us.
Cristiano Gatto custom-designed a whole slew of Home’s furnishings. Above, a sketch for a bookcase with another drawing for a table to its left. Below, a coffee table. One of the most iconic pieces is the asymmetric, organic bar in the sky lounge (bottom left). eesen believes passionately in marrying performance with efficiency. We do this in different ways. In the case of the 50m Home, the world’s first Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) with hybrid propulsion, this is achieved by combining diesel and electrical propulsion. The result is a unique, high-performance, supremely quiet displacement yacht with reduced environmental impact. This stunning piece of technology is wrapped in an elegant design package with exterior lines by Omega Architects and an interior design by Cristiano Gatto. Project Nova was sold to her enthusiastic owner in July 2016, and was launched and christened Home in April 2017. The short delivery time is thanks to the fact that at Heesen we are able to start construction in anticipation of the market demand for hybrid propulsion. A sister ship is already in build. It is a great advantage to be able start building on speculation: it is one thing to have that technical knowledge on paper, but quite another to put it into practice. The term ‘hybrid’ refers to a drivetrain that draws on two or more power sources for propulsion and hotel needs, commonly diesel engines and electric motors, which can be used together or individually. When we consider such systems, the emphasis is usually on energy saving and reducing emissions. This is relevant in a hybrid car, but hybrid propulsion at sea has a wider set of aims. From an owner’s perspective, the main advantage is the enhanced comfort that the option of silent cruising provides. And Home is exceptionally quiet. In the quest for quiet, some hybrid yacht systems provide silent power, but their output is usually limited to hotel loads when at anchor, which was not Heesen’s primary objective. We want to also cruise in silent mode.
Home’s exterior are characterised by a long waterline and floor‐to‐ ceiling windows. In fact, she has 33 per cent more external glass than previous 50m Heesen semi‐ displacements. Page opposite, two of Home’s signatures: her sculptural bow and theatrical central staircase aft

well as highly-functional pieces of equipment. The pop-up lift - a version produced exclusively Bertazzoni Lift Marine & ICM Marine - has been extremely successful, appearing as if by magic from a table or unit on the Sun deck. Lifts made for yachts must, of course, respect legislative standards, but they offer an almost infinite range of personalisation opportunities - a wide variety of shapes, and materials ranging from leather, eel skin and chamois to select fabrics and solid gold, not forgetting opulent marbles and fine crystal. From pure minimalism to the most florid Baroque, everything is possible so long as the choices are in line with the yacht’s weight and interiors – there’s even a “light” version with aluminium risers. Making marine lifts, though, is no easy task – the operating system is subject to more stress and attack from corrosive agents like seawater than it is on land. As a result experience and materials quality play a crucial role. Bertazzoni Lift Marine & ICM Marine manufacture everything - cabins, doors, controllers etc - in house, and carry out stringent safety tests and checks on every individual component. They also train crew engineers, giving them the ability to take measures in the event of temporary difficulties. The painstaking nature of this work is clearly demonstrated by the fact that a yacht lift takes four times as long to install as a lift on land. Bertazzoni & ICM follows the client every step of the way, from the design stage to sea trials and post-installation. And to close the circle, the Vertec Marine division has just been launched to provide post-sales assistance. Operational 24/7 throughout the world, the company has a staff of highly-qualified technicians posted at the ports most frequently visited by megayachts, as well as personnel who are available at all times on a toll-free number and can carry out day-to-day repairs and maintenance. On board elegance and safety includes lifts, too. www.bertazzoniascensori.com - www.icmlift.com 133

The streamlined, cleanly-designed 100’ Corsaro is a reimagining of an iconic 1980s Riva flagship with modern styling elements. A whole new fly philosophy ideal for owners seeking just the right sporty edge to their elegance. A very cool mix indeed

hen it premiered in 2017, the Corsaro won instant international acclaim and success as far afield as the East. A celebration of
the eponymous flying bridge and Riva flagship of the 1980, this yacht is, however, much more than a reissue of an old and pretty legendary favourite. It is actually more of a link between the iconic Riva boats that have become the elegant symbol par excellence of the Made in Italy ethic, and the megayacht market the Bergamo Feretti Group brand is now beginning to explore. Unsurprisingly therefore everything aboard has been designed not just with functionality and sumptuous comfort in mind but also to exude the same sense of powerful beauty and exclusivity as a megayacht. Both the 100’ Corsaro’s interiors and exterior styling are the work of Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta’s Officina Italiana Design studio which has partnered Riva’s Product Strategic Committee and Engineering Department for over two decades. The Corsaro is strikingly clean of line and clothed in resolute yet organic forms. “The Corsaro was conceived for owners that want be out in their boat but also like style and elegance. The kind of people that see beauty in exquisitely precise detailing,” says Officina Italiana Design’s chief designer Mauro Micheli. “With respect to the model it replaces in the 98-100’ segment, superb design and style were the priorities whilst also keeping in mind the need for much more onboard space.” Some of the stylistic choices aboard were borrowed from the yard’s recent and widely-applauded models, not least the 76’ Perseo, the 88’ Florida and the 88’ Domino. Examples include the dark dome, a sleek Shark Grey livery alternated with Bright Black accents, the use of materials such as carbon-fibre for many details. “This creates a kind of aesthetic continuity with Riva’s newer models as well as adding successful styling cues,” explains the designer. The Corsaro’s talents don’t stop there, however. This is a yacht designed to really allow owner and guest to live the sea in all its many aspects. Al fresco areas abound, from the large aft cockpit where guests are welcomed aboard by the sight of freestanding Paola Lenti furnishings to the swim platform created when the stern hatch opens out, the immense flybridge and private chill-out area forward. “The Corsaro has made a big impact internationally because of its standard of comfort which translates into more space and al fresco areas. Forward of the sun pad, for instance, there’s quite a spacious yet very private area that has won a lot of fans. It is a perfect pulpit to savour the spectacle of the sea from,” adds Officina Italiana Design CEO Sergio Beretta. The Corsaro’s chic yet refined interiors are enhanced too by the presence of the leading Italian designer brands, creating a genuine dialogue

WILD THING It may still be a prototype but this electric motorbike also has actual miles on the clock. The future-forward Zvexx design really packs a punch too. Ideal for yachts and blistering yet eco-friendly forays ashore by DĂŠsirĂŠe Sormani
154
Z
vexx P1 is a name you might want to remember. Because we bet you’ll be hearing a lot more about it in the future.
Although still at the prototype stage, this electric motorbike is perfect for speed-loving owners that like to surround themselves with the best. An edgy attention-grabber, it will ensure you roll off your gigayacht in style. In fact, it has already attracted admiring crowds at St Tropez and Monaco. Described by its constructor as “a fusion of raw biker appeal and unbridled electric force”, the Zvexx P1 unleashes a savage and instantaneous 1200 N-m of torque. Anyone that has ever experienced a high performance electric vehicle will be aware they deliver maximum torque from zero rpm without any gear shifts or clutch. In this case that means 0 to 80 km/h in about 3 seconds – razor-sharp acceleration for a radical ride unmatched by any other bike. With zero vibration and an unrelenting surge of power to boot. The Zvexx P1 is the only fully registered bike of its kind, and can be seen out and about, hugging the curvy roads around Lake Geneva. Silence is one of the signatures of electric drives and the Zvexx P1’s designers saw no need to fake the shriek of a conventional bike with an artificial soundtrack. Instead they realised that the bike’s silent motor adds a ghostly quality that leaves bystanders wondering what exactly they are seeing as the bike streaks by. Featuring a tubular steel frame, aluminium alloy wheels, reinforced fibre body panels and some smaller carbon fibre elements too, the prototype is worth around 120,000 USD and Zvexx is already thinking about a limited production run for the future. http://zvexx.com

AN IMPORTANT anniversary
Audemars Piguet, an illustrious fine watchmaking brand founded
in Le Brassus, Switzerland, in 1875, is celebrating its Royal Oak Offshore model, launched twenty-five years ago, with a prestigious new collection by Paolo De Vecchi

E
xactly 25 years ago, Swiss watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet presented its OffShore model, an even more majestic and spectacular development of the already imposing Royal Oak, produced since the
mid-1970s. We have to take a step back in time for clearer understanding of this timepiece’s importance to modern watchmaking. The Royal Oak appeared over the horizon like a sort of UFO, an unidentified object in the skies of the industry of the time, as it bore the name of a luxury brand but overturned all its hallmark elements – apart from quality, of course – starting from its imposing dimensions and the use, at least in the first versions, of steel. And when the Royal Oak OffShore was launched about twenty years these features were exaggerated even further, gaining the approval of a public looking for large, showy, instantly recognisable objects to adorn their wrist. From then on it has been referenced in over a thousand different models, but for the watch’s 25th anniversary Audemars Piguet has presented it once again in an updated version, but generally similar to that first model of 1993. The celebratory collection includes two other OffShore models, also with a chronograph, but whose dial reveals the mechanical movement based on architectural criteria and featuring a tourbillon, a complication adopted by the most prestigious fine watchmaking brands.
157
[ The WATCH ] The dominance of design The watchmaking industry, especially where wristwatches are concerned, has undergone many changes, brought about above all by changing stylistic values, but the initial impact with the rules of design (form following function, for example) occurred for the first time during the 1970s. In 1972 Gérald Genta, regarded as one of the greatest watch stylists of our times, created the angular, solid shape of the Royal Oak for the Audemars Piguet brand. Destined to become a pattern for a totally new type of timepiece, this model combined the sporty appeal of steel with the aesthetic luxury and manufacturing prestige of the Audemars Piguet brand. Such a shape had never been seen before, featuring an integrated bracelet and an octagonal bezel mounted with eight visible screws. It gained a stellar reception from the most demanding and knowledgeable section of the public. The dial, with its deep guilloche finish called “Tapisserie”, completed this masterpiece of inventiveness.
