ommunicating emotions is not easy. But we here at THE ONE Yacht

& Design have always believed that if produced with passion and

skill, a print magazine can do job very well indeed. And to judge by the compliments we are receiving, we seem to have succeeded. But what about the web? To coincide with the Cannes Yacht Festival and the Monaco Boat Show, our new www.theoneyd.com website goes live at the end of this summer. It will allow you to flick through, download and share the articles published in the print magazine as well as offering a wide and varied selection of other exhilarating content. All in signature THE ONE style, of course.

We will also be boosting our new online presence by sending out two newsletters each month to our large database, starting in September. Mirroring THE ONE’s style and graphics, they are designed to help our readers keep their finger on the pulse of all the best that the superyacht, design and lifestyle worlds have to offer. So that’s how it stands as we embark upon our fourth summer… when we think of how many new boats we’ve encouraged forth over that time, we imagine a veritable ocean of new floating forms. An ocean you can surf on the web now too… Have a great summer!

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]

LAMBERTO TACOLI PERINI NAVI CHAIRMAN & CEO by Désirée Sormani

Is there an air of optimism in the sector? What are your thoughts in that regard? This is certainly a positive time for the sector and the companies are starting to see their sales go up again and, consequently, the value of their output. According to the Boating Market Monitor drawn up by Nautica Italiana and Deloitte, the Italian shipbuilding industry recorded 9% growth in the first quarter of this year, with an expected year-end figure for 2018 of 12-15%. I also think that that Italian market is now officially buoyant again after years of profound crisis and that the companies need to continue to innovative, keeping quality standards high and, most of all, working together to retain our leadership position in the world nautical industry. What was the situation like in Perini when you joined it a year ago? I arrived in Perini Navi after the Perini family and the Tabacchi family signed their agreement. At that time, this prestige, historic Italian shipbuilding brand required radical strategic reorganisation. The route we’ve gone down so far with our new shareholders and Fabio Perini has allowed the yard to come to the market with new resources and renewed energy. The change has also provided huge impetus for innovation which has always been part of the Perini Navi DNA. The boats currently in build and the new models we’ll be launching shortly are clear proof of that. So what is the situation now after a year of work? How is the orders book looking? We worked very hard indeed on several different fronts and I am very satisfied with what we’ve achieved. We’re getting positive feedback from the market, too. Right now we have five new boats already in build on our orders book – three sailers – a 60, a 47 and a 42-metre – and three motoryachts - a 56, a 53 and a little gem of a 25-metre. But we’re expecting a few pleasant surprises in the near future, too! What was your strategy for getting this historic megasailer brand back on top again? Perini Navi has always been a leader, a brand that symbolises innovation, quality and elegance, synonymous with a new, absolutely unique way of living and interpreting the sea. When I joined Perini Navi, I very passionately wanted to drive forward our “One Brand, One Company” philosophy – one brand for sailing and motoryachts, a single strong name that would continue to represent a spearhead of the Made In Italy ethic worldwide. I also wanted to inject strong impetus into innovative product lines whilst retaining the company credo of putting the product and client at the heart of everything. I have huge belief in the projects we are working on and we intend strengthening our product range still further also. What are your production plans right now? In the course of 2018, we should have 8-9 yachts building in our Viareggio, La Spezia and Yildiz (Turkey) at the same time. 22

[ DESIGN DISTRICT ] ROBERTO MINOTTI CO CEO MINOTTI S.P.A. by Marta Bernasconi

What functional and aesthetic idea inspires your concept of the sofa and relaxation? The different ways of interpreting and livings spaces and constantly evolving living styles inspire our creative process. We are inspired by the flow of contemporary life which is increasingly cosmopolitan and multicultural. Minotti’s second sofa is a response to a demanding community that travels and is looking for an elegant, international style that’s also comfortable and versatile, so that they will feel at home no matter where they are in the world. When we design new seating systems, we imagine how every single element can come to life in the every day: all in the context of a contemporary-classic and timeless style that goes beyond time and trends. What in Minotti’s view are the cornerstones of a quality product? The key formula with Minotti-designed products is expressing the Made in Italy concept to the fullest, a mix that encapsulates elegance, character, comfort and also seamlessly melds tradition and technology. Each product translates an easily-identifiable aesthetic code most notably through the selection of luxe materials, sophisticated colour combinations and meticulous bespoke care that goes into every construction detail. What are the new backdrops for quality soft furnishings? Today’s consumers are becoming more demanding, sophisticated and knowledgeable in their choices. They are looking for high quality, powerfully expressive products that they can recognise themselves in. In yachts, as with residential and hospitality projects, there is a growing need to qualify and characterise outdoor spaces too now. Hence our decision in 2013 to launch an outdoor collection of our own that would imbue open-air spaces with personality using very comfortable, flexible elements designed for terraces, gardens, spas or elegant yachts. So what’s your top new product for 2018? This year is the company’s 70th anniversary so we presented a multifaceted collection open to design philosophies from different cultures. Our flagship products are our seating systems: Alexander and Granville, by Rodolfo Dordoni and Christophe Delcourt, which are designed for medium-to-large living spaces. Then there are Russell and Tape, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni and the Nendo studio, which are more compact and so ideal for residential and hospitality settings. Lastly, for outdoor spaces we have the modular Quadrado system which is the fruit of Marcio Kogan’s design and architectural experience and inspired by nature and the nautical world. Does Minotti “live” onboard yachts so to speak? The nautical world has undergone a real revolution in the last decade: the designers have poured their style and savoir-faire into producing a whole new interpretation of the spaces involved. What owners are looking for is uniqueness and personalisation, a style that is becoming less and less linked to the nautical sector’s canons. Minotti embraced that particular challenge years ago by offering a harmonious, elegant ensemble of furnishing elements that expresses a high standard of both technological and manufacturing nous. 24

ack in May, Fincantieri Yachts introduced its new Griffin Series of fully custom megayachts which will span 66, 77, 88 and 99-metre models, at the Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous in Viareggio. The Griffin moniker was chosen as the yachts’ bold, graceful lines embody the power and majesty of the mythical creature. It also presented the Griffin 66 at the event. The concept was developed with Christopher Seymour working on the exteriors and Guido de Groot providing the interior design while Carl Esch was named as designers’ activities coordinator. The Griffin 66’s exterior is multifaceted mix of deft power and functional beauty. The leading-edge yacht has a contemporary yet timeless allure with fine furnishings and materials adding further flair to a chic take on minimalism that also succeeds in being warm and welcoming. Large windows draw the outside marine world right inside too. A genuinely multitalented beauty. www.fincantieriyachts.it

here was huge excitement when Riva revealed the exterior design of its new 90’ at this year’s Boot. The

new-generation flybridge yacht builds on the strength of its two predecessors thanks to the skills of Officina Italiana Design, founded by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, and the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee

and Engineering Division. A sleek profile and impressive hull glazing with integrated portholes are the first things to spring to the eye. The saloon on the main deck has full-height windows its entire length also. Another large window on the foredeck draws light into the wide body owner’s suite. Aft, lateral fibreglass and glass structures return to boost the aerodynamics of the profile. Lastly, the new yacht has the Ferretti-patented concealed stern stairs that clients adored on the 56’ Rivale. A Williams 395 tender and wet bike can even be launched separately. Three engine set-ups are offered with maximum speeds in the 28 to 30-knot range.

CN is feeling justifiably proud of the DOM123, the first model in the DOM

series named after the Latin for home, Domus. The Stefano Vafiadis 37-metre is a born cruiser that targets young, modern owners with a lifestyle focus and so delivers on both the style and comfort fronts. An aluminium semi-displacement hull and twin 1939 kW MTUs punch out a maximum of 21 knots between them (cruising is 18) but the bulbous bow, tank-test in Zagreb, optimises efficiency at 12 knots to yield a range of 3,000 nm. Even so, the 8.7-metre beam makes for large volumes and great stability in all sea conditions. Two saloons and a choice of four or five cabins on the lower deck with the main deck devoted entirely to the owner’s stateroom in the latter instance, means the DOM123 has accommodations for 10-12 guests. The deck spaces are vast and designed for chilling and parties. There is a Jacuzzi on the very large fly and the beach club too offers plenty of extra space when open. www.cerricantierinavali.it

O

wning a yacht is a bit like running a small business. It takes skilful management to

ensure your seafaring dream doesn’t morph into a nightmare. Floating Life has been providing owners with a long list of helpful services to free them from that burden. The Swiss-based company’s input goes well beyond dealing with bureaucratic niggles, however. Its exclusive tailored services span the spectrum from getting luggage aboard to organising the crew and their uniforms, to actual day-today management of the yacht. Floating Life was founded in 2002 by Andrea Pezzini and his wife Barbara Tambani and the duo have customised their services to such an extent that they can cater to virtually any request, including extending onboard vacations with a stay in a luxury hotel ashore. “We wanted to create something different to anything available on the market to help lighten the load of managing holiday time,” says Pezzini who knows his way around the yachting sector. “Over the years, we have specialised to the extent that we now have a group of services dedicated exclusively to owners.” Yacht management aside, Floating Life is also well-versed in the charter market and has

unparalleled expertise with multi-ownership yachts. It has now put that experience to good use by inventing a whole new format. “This is a sector we’ve been dealing with since 2007, when Yacht Plus called us into manage three 41-metres especially designed for it by archistar Sir Norman Foster (Ocean Emerald, Ocean Pearl and Ocean Sapphire) and built by Rodriquez. In the space of a month, Barbara and I put together a rotation management system for them. Ten years on, that formula has proved a real success.” Buoyed by that experience, Pezzini decided to bring his skills in that field and used them with his previous experience to really upping the ante for the company. Before co-founding Floating Life, he worked as a surveyor, technical manager and also a designer for several leading yard, most notably Picchiotti, Tecnomarine and Amico. “We designed the K43 (ed.’s note: the K line designed by Pezzini introduces a slew of firsts. From the first Technema 65 in 1976 to the majestic 80m Chopi Chopi, the Zuccon International Project studio has always flanked yacht design with a history of innovation and success, resulting in the creation of more than a hundred different boat models. have just seven owners which we are currently seeking who will be able to enjoy longer ownership periods.” Three are currently on the drawing board and will be available in 8 to 10-day slots for several periods a year. Floating Life’s approach to multi-ownership is different too: owners can choose from fractional ownership whereby they purchase a portion of the yacht or time-sharing. In the latter instance, the purchaser is not the owner and thus has no legal responsibilities. “Time-shares can be rented out to third parties too which means that you can recoup part of your capital investment,” says Pezzini. Personalising your time aboard is encouraged, too: “When the client arrives aboard, they will find their personal effects - artwork, family photos, books, linen – waiting for them. We ask them to leave things aboard that create a sense of belonging and they’ll be there next time they come back. We have a huge warehouse where we store personal effects and even children’s toys.” Floating Life even has plans to organise a round the world voyage for the K43 that will take the ownership calendar into account. “It’s madness, I know,” laughs Pezzini. “But we want to give a try!”

The 27-metre Sanlorenzo heralds a radical concept and a slew of firsts for the yard itself. Thanks to the work of an exceptional team, this crossover paves the way for a new type of yacht with loft-like open spaces that also blur the divisions between interior and exterior. Exterior Design Officina Italiana Design

O

fficina Italiana Design worked on this project at a time when we had a collaboration contract with Sanlorenzo for several vessels. When Luca Santella put the SX88 concept to us, we immediately thought it was a very interesting proposal: it encompassed a whole new idea of onboard living and that was hugely stimulating for us. We came up with a form around what he gave us, that we knew had to have a very strong personality. Everything was instinctual, including the Z for Zoro motif. Those three connected lines yield a new and very contemporary take on the reverseangled window, a classic naval and explorer vessel cue, creating a motif that is very far from banal. The SX 88 has strong muscular lines yet the surface detailing is very refined. The string on the deckhouse that runs from the stern to stem and continues in imaginary fashion to the tip of the bow is another intuitive feature. We used large windows to free up the light and drew it inside the boat to brighten the interior spaces. Some of the aesthetic detailing on the surfaces you won’t notice immediately. But you will get the feeling that there is something quite unusual going on in the whole yacht: they are hidden touches that you may not understand but you will feel. Even the very dark anthracite livery is a break with the familiar, Sanlorenzo’s included. But despite that the SX88 is very much a Sanlorenzo. The family feeling is clear: the stern, the hard-top and the hull portholes are all Sanlorenzo styling cues. The SX88 is aimed at a sophisticated, unusual kind of owner and might even prove popular with sailors. We are proud to have helped create a range of yachts that have set a new course in yacht design.

Concept Creator and Project Coordinator Luca Santella

T

he SX88’s real strength and the source of its success lie in the collection of new ideas that sparked the project. I’m talking about the open transom platform, the single helm position on the upper deck, the mechanical closing mechanism on the large fly windows, the completely open space main deck that also includes the master stateroom, and the pod system. The lines chosen for the exteriors clothe all those innovative concepts. The first boat was an on spec craft. And, like all of Sanlorenzo’s new projects, she came about through meetings of the company board, which follows the progress of new products. I conceived many of the ideas working on a full 3D model that was then delivered to Officina Italiana Design, which did the exterior cosmetic work. The waterlines, on the other hand, were designed by an American, Lou Codega, who specialises in fast, ocean-going fishermans. Codega’s boats all have very slender bow sections which end in quite a flat stern section. This compromise means that safe, comfortable navigation even in big seas can be combined with small engines and fuel consumption levels. The truth is that the SX88 is the result of many pens: each one of us worked in our specialist field and to the best of our ability. Then there was the coordination and verification process that the Sanlorenzo Board normally does in defining new projects and which always results in the initial idea being honed to its optimum. The SX88’s exterior lines are very unusual – the very opposite of classic. The result is an excellent balance between elegance, power and functionality. A perfect mix of a working vessel and a motoryacht. What our clients like most of all about the SX – and this is also what is really driving her success – is that she is a smart, functional, seaworthy, elegant motoryacht.

69

Interior Design Piero Lissoni

I

f I had to say how I started the Sanlorenzo design, I’d say I began with the idea of an owner, in this instance Massimo Perotti. I like that connection. When I talk about a project, I talk about something shared. When Massimo spoke to me about the possibility of designing an SX, a new generation boat with a whole new take on space, I thought: “This is my big opportunity, damn it!” The first thing we did was to open up a dialogue on how this boat might be. The idea was very simple: why not try to design a boat that doesn’t have any truck with the classic canons? Something open space, for example. I asked myself why we have to design corridors. Why throw away the width of a room for a corridor that is used for three per cent of its lifetime? That’s what got me saying ‘Let’s open things up, let’s take things away!’ Why do all boats have to have cabins? I thought we could limit the number

70

of cabins and approach it from a completely different angle. Make it a social boat, a boat that would ensure you had an interesting social life, but not necessarily a boat for too many guests either. That’s where the SX design started from. Massimo Perotti believed in me and so here we are. At the end of the day, the SX88 is an open space in the shape of a boat with an elegant simplicity, a boat that offers her guests the chance to connect with the world around them. Very much against current nautical trends for almost entirely bespoke furnishings, the SX88’s furnishings were chosen from the catalogues of the top designer brands. The production furnishings on the market work really well aboard. In actual fact, they are a far better choice. If a thing already exists, why would you go to the trouble of inventing something banal with no nice proportions or quality?

This sketch by Piero Lissoni reveals the staircase concept featuring floating steps. A large sheet of glazing (above) adds security to the stairs. Page opposite, the sunning area on the fly and the steering position. All the SX88’s furnishing were selected from the catalogues of leading designer furniture brands.

ecause the SX is a crossover line, we felt a moniker that was an indirect reference to explorers might work as that idea greatly influenced the concept behind this new line which is ideal for living life to the fullest in close contact with the sea. Contact with nature, which is the SX88’s salient feature, is a priority for us. The owners who come to Sanlorenzo are real connoisseurs and passionate about boats. What they like first and foremost is being able to live the sea fully. Naturally enough, we are also targeting owners who choose Sanlorenzo yachts because they like their elegance. Even though she is completely innovative, the SX88 has the sobriety, the beautifully balanced volumes and masses that have made the brand’s craft instantly recognisable. The concept is attractive in itself but the open transom platform is hugely versatile and larger than anything ever seen on a 27-metre. The same applies to the interiors with the main deck now free of the helm position which has been moved to the flying bridge. That means it is entirely liveable – the kind of thing that only happens on very large superyachts. The big glazed surfaces also mean the interiors seem to form a seamless continuum with the exterior, guaranteeing excellent and effective communication between interior and exterior. Owners also appreciate this more “extreme” and innovative version which gives them the choice of a completely open space interior, creating an authentic loft-like ambience at sea. The SX88 was born in the knowledge that we were sparking a complete range of yachts that would brilliantly meet market demands. 70 and 80 footers are the perfect dimensions for cruising the Mediterranean and very much in demand on the market at the moment. The SX88 is enjoying significant success: the first example made its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017 and in recent months we’ve upped our sales to 13 units sold, mostly to the European market, which is bouncing back after years of crisis. She is also getting a very warm reception on the American and Asian markets. The SX88 is an elegant, versatile and evolved boat.

The exterior lines are the product of a Z motif that came to the designers in a flash: the three lines making up the Z shape paved the way for a contemporary take on reverse-angled glazing (a classic feature of naval and explorer vessels)

are the two official sense when it comes to cars. Design and sound, in other words, are pivotal

factors and thus purchase motivators. This deeply-rooted conviction looks set to be rocked to its core by the gradual emergence of electric motors on even high performance and supercars this millennium. Just a decade ago, electric power seemed like an extravagance that would only stretch to toys for the big-spending high net worth crew. But now it’s very much mainstream with the facts and figures to back it up. In 2017, BMW sold in the region of 100,000 zero emissions cars, a jump of 60% on the previous year. The German marque expects that 15-25% of its models will be electric by 2025 too. That may only be an estimate but it’s credible enough because it is backed up by a very real-word fact. A few months ago the Bavarian company laid the first stone of the new Competence Centre for Battery Cells which opens its doors in 2019 and involved a total investment of around 200 million euro. This is an essential stepping stone to the fifth generation of its electric motors which will have a range of about 700 km, by 2021 or so. That said, BMW’s present is very ably represented by the new i8 Roadster First Edition, the evolution

The 48-metre yacht by Francesco Paszkowski was the first to take to the water. Soon other yachts bearing the seagull brand were launched, ranging from 40 to 54 metres. STRATEGIC FLEET by Désirée Sormani

T

aking on one of Italy’s historic yards with roots in yachtbuilding history and launching it towards the future with

powerful, proactive approach may not seem so difficult – however, you need a well-defined strategy involving a variety of dynamics that take advantage of the winning cards you are holding. The Gavio Group took over Baglietto in 2012, and is making use of the yard’s solid commercial and industrial base to

implement a relaunch initiative that aims to place the seagull brand among the world’s major yachtbuilders. Baglietto offers some important assets – it boasts a long tradition, places great emphasis on innovation, supports research and development and is infused with creative spirit and technical expertise. One element of this strategy is to extend the product range so that clients can choose from a variety of platforms (from 40 to 70 metres), styles and power options. However, all bear the strong imprint that makes it clear these are all Baglietto yachts, even at sea. “We decided to ask different designers to create the lines of future yachts, to see how they would interpret our brand and history”, explained Michele Gavino, who took over as CEO in 2015. “It has turned out to be a good choice, as the two most recent contracts, signed in the same year, bear the name of new designers – both are by Horacio Bozzo but the interiors are by Hot Lab for the 54-metre build and Achille Salvagni for the 40-metre yacht. As well as designs by Francesco Paszkowski Design, reflecting all Baglietto’s typical style elements, there are projects by Frank Mulder from Holland (the 70-metre Sestante) and Horacio Bozzo, Hot Lab and Santa Maria Magnolfi. “Each has its own distinctive character, but all are clearly by Baglietto. Mulder’s great strength is engineering. The 70-metre we presented at

Michele Gavino, CEO of Baglietto, took the helm at the company 2015. The yard’s infrastructure has been expanding for some years – the production site now covers 35,000 square metres, with two construction hangars for hulls up 65 metres long and jetties for yachts up to 70 metres long. Late summer will also see the opening of a new 3,600 square metre basin, with two 85-metre jetties

Monte Carlo is a brand-new platform that has enabled us to build a large yacht with an above-average speed and slightly reduced consumption. The Santa Maria Magnolfi studio in Milan was founded by two young people, Valentina Magnolfi (who is from the Tuscan yacht design school and tradition) and Federico Santa Maria, . They have combined a yacht design with military tradition – we like this because it harks back to our origins. They have designed four yachts for us from 41 to 55 metres. Horacio Bozzo creates sinuous, very “feminine” forms, unlike other designers who develop a more “masculine” look, and he’s also good at making the external lines stand out. Top, together with a 41-metre yacht, Hot Lab’s 38-metre is part of the V-line designed by the Milan studio for Baglietto. Above Hot Lab team, fom left: Enrico Lumini, Antonio Romano, Michele Dragoni

The Hot Lab studio has a talent for interpreting our brand – they draw inspiration for the exteriors, like Francesco, from classic Italian cars like Lamborghini and Ferrari. They’re very good – with them we’ve developed four models between 38 and 50 metres. We’re also developing a 54-metre build that will blow everyone away in 2020.

Above and below, one of the designs by Francesco Paszkowski (top, in frame) for Baglietto. The 43 Fast is a 43.65-metre all-aluminium planing yacht that promises a top speed of 30 knots. Its sporty exterior recalls elements of car design.

90

As for Francesco Paszkowski…well, what more is there to say? He has absorbed Baglietto’s stylistic hallmarks to such an extent that when he tries to refresh the yard’s lines, we’re the ones who have to put a brake on it”. Listed as one of Italy’s top 100 centres of excellence in 2017, Baglietto is one of those yards that stakes everything on constant research. “Technology is crucial for us”, Gavino emphasises. “We’re always looking for new ideas and solutions. We’re often dealing with tycoons who are more familiar with this technology than we are, or even manufacture it”. Know-how is a concept that serves designers who are working on fertile ground if yards make it available to them. We’re now collaborating with designers on the use of highperformance materials, while light, recyclable materials are also a focus of interest, and some interesting results are starting to appear. However, we also have to think about propulsion and atmospheric emissions – owners nowadays are much more aware of this issue, and they are much more knowledgeable. That’s why we respect them and strive to offer a selection of different craft”. Above, a rendering of the 70-metre Sestante designed by Holland’s Frank Mulder, tops Baglietto’s T-line range. The corridor leading to the owner’s cabin has a curved side, free and soft, which becomes an art gallery, so it’s not just a walkway, it’s an expressive part of the yacht. eing a completely bespoke design, Areti was built to meet all of the owners’ exacting requirements to the highest standard, being mindful of and in line with the Passenger Yacht Code. The level of quality in craftsmanship, design and detailing shines through. The yacht has a real British design and German manufacturing pedigree. Winch Design was responsible for both the exterior and interior design, and has given the yacht a sleek and perfectly balanced signature, complemented by a traditional but fresh interior style. The subtle cream hull, along with the white superstructure and grey accents, enhance the elegant exterior but also match the owner’s previous yachts. Throughout the yacht there are multiple outdoor areas, with each serving its own purpose: dining, socialising, relaxing and private spaces to enjoy the yacht without intrusion. For example, the private owner’s area, which is directly accessed through the owner’s stateroom, is fitted with a Jacuzzi, spacious sun loungers and a breakfast table. The outdoor spaces also work as one entity. This is seen in the connection between the swim platform, wet lounge and spa.

The helipad forward of the owner’s deck is huge (opposite page). This deck also leads down to the main via latch doors to the promenade sidewalks. hat I like about Areti is how calm it is on board! The interior has a traditional feel with an American classic twist, a custom design that was created according to the owner’s requirements. We actually mocked up the entire thing. The key materials include neutral, textured fabrics and lavish woodwork, to create a soft, comfortable and relaxing space. The level of quality in the craftsmanship, design and detailing shines through in both the interior and exterior of the yacht. Winch created many bespoke items for Areti and also worked with several exceptional suppliers. For example, Linley produced Winch bespoke jewellery boxes supplied for the owner and dressing rooms. A key factor onboard is natural light. There is a sky

106

light placed above the wet lounge and natural light shines through the numerous windows. But it is not entirely reliant on natural light: custom decorative lighting was key to creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. The owner wanted a monochromatic palette in soft creams and taupes, and accent colours chosen in concert with paintings curated just for this project by an American art adviser. As Areti was built in accordance with the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC), we had to comply with a series of regulations and make some very precise choices, such as in terms of fire protection. One of the reasons we used a matt finish on most of the furnishings was for the simple reason that gloss lacquer is highly flammable.

A combination of straight grain and figured Makore timber provided the basis for the interior design. Areti is a yachtsman’s yacht. The superior craftsmanship and design detailing shine through in everything from the workmanship of the stairs to the wine cabinet in the main saloon (page opposite) and custom bar stools (top) with handembroidered details on their backs

The Shipyard Dietrich Kirchner, Project Manager Lürssen

T

he client was the owner of a fleet of one 60m and two smaller yachts, which he happily sailed. However, he was out for the chance to create synergies by combining the features of his yachts in one substantial approach. He contacted the shipyard and we then developed the initial ideas of the project with him from there. His primary goal was to host his family and very good friends simultaneously, providing privacy and generous hospitality at the same time. The number of guests onboard made it necessary to have the yacht built according to the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC). With a length of 85m and less than 3000 GT, the task was to create a layout that fulfilled the complex requirements regarding escape ways and structural fire protection. Along with the fire protection came the treatment and selection of the materials used for the interior. The look, feel and touch of the interior was not to be compromised in any way so that it would not look anything less than a luxury interior. The result speaks for itself as one cannot see the difference. Technically, Areti represents the stateof-the art with the capability to comply with updated requirements. For example, the exhaust lines of the auxiliary engines are fitted with soot particle filters and catalytic converters.

The lift goes to all decks. That includes the sun deck, seen here by night, with its large sun pad, sun loungers and sofa. An “invisible” windshield deflects wind at anchor and when Areti is underway

108

The engine room layout has space reserved for the eventual future fitting of urea injection and additional catalytic converters in the main engine exhaust line. As the keel laying date was in 2015, this was not a requirement at the time. The owner’s passion for a racing bike riding with his friends is reflected in the layout of the lower deck aft interior area with four guest cabins en suite with a spa area and the beach club providing direct access to the aft swim platform. In between, there is a glass bike store that can take a full set of bikes and equipment for a cycling team. The engine cover of the open tender boat features a carbon fibre hood moulded to clip on and carry the race bikes ashore and back onboard after the ride. With this set-up, the guests can be picked up with the bikes at the aft platform and returned there too after the ride to relax in the spa and massage area and enjoy refreshments from the bar in the beach club. My favourite part of Areti? Well, the idea of waking up in the morning, leaving a guest cabin on the lower deck to stroll through the corridor to the aft swim platform for a jump in the ocean.

eing born in Florence is a real privilege for anyone with creative leanings. The beauty and culture that permeate every single corner of the city are powerful stimuli and also provide a solid historical grounding for creating new designs. Mario Luca Giusti had just such a start in life but before he even turned 18, he’d already moved to Milan to further hone his knowledge of style and fashion. His time spent there proved very useful indeed when he arrived back to his native city and took over the historic family footwear company which was founded in 1865. Giusti showed a talent for business but never stopped looking ahead. By the mid-2000s, he had realised that the markets were undergoing sweeping changes and that small,

long-established footwear firms were facing into a very serious crisis. His eureka moment came after he bought a set of very lovely glasses by chance which all his friends adored and he realised he could copy their shapes using high tech materials. No sooner said than done: Giusti already had the production facilities and all he had to do was convert them to a different kind of manufacturing. In 2007, he launched his new brand and his first tableware collections which were a fine mix of the elegant and the practical. The glasses and a whole range of other tableware were all made from acrylic called synthetic crystal, while the plates were melamine. CLAUDIO SADLER

I’m looking for an alchemy of tastes and colours He’s been a name to reckon with in Italian haute cuisine for more than 35 years. A veteran chef who loves new adventures, in summer 2018 he embarks for the Costa Smeralda by Marta Bernasconi

Not for a holiday, though. “I’m embarking on a new, exciting adventure. A new restaurant, the Sadler Porto Cervo is about to open in the historic Sottovento Club. I’m taking my cooking to an international location with a superb sea, a lovely region that offers wonderful products”. He’s extremely enthusiastic about this new development in his life - understandably so, as he takes a keen interest in Mediterranean cuisine. “Of course, the menu here is simpler than the one in my Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s still based on research, quality and innovation, but the dishes are light and are designed for people on holiday, inspired by the local Sardinian cuisine, plus an extensive, varied and interesting wine list”. And so a new chapter in the already eventful life of Claudio Sadler begins. The chef opened his first restaurant in Milan in the mid-1980s and has never looked back since, becoming involved in producing cookbooks, high-level banqueting and his role as president of the Le Soste restaurateurs association. He has many strings to his bow, but there are two fixed points in his life. “I am Milanese and I draw inspiration from regional cooking. I make it my own, so my cooking is modern, and I like evolving. But I also like clarity, simplicity, so I can’t stand the over-the-top complexity

he owner wanted a boat that expressed all the excellent qualities of her predecessor but that was also more powerful and better. As always, the greatest challenge was to achieve this general upgrade while still guaranteeing an elegant, timeless style that was in tune with the owner’s ideas and the way he intends to use the yacht. In addition, obviously, to designing a high-performance, seaworthy yacht. Initially, Pink Gin was to be under 50m so that she could get into port in Saint-Tropez, but in reality she is just under 54m. However, she can still get into the great majority of marinas across the world. We worked very hard to optimise her forms and gave her a U-shaped hull that yields more stability. She also has a maximum heel angle of between 20 and 22° to keep comfort levels high underway. Pink Gin has a sloop rig, on the other hand, because she needs to be very high performance in the light Mediterranean breezes, and was also designed to sail around the world, so she needed a lot of sail. Ideal conditions for her would be between 15 and 16 knots of wind. Beyond that, you cut the sail a bit on a beat. Other impressive features are the hatches/balconies that open out and offer direct access to the interior. This was a complex job because it impacted the load line and the overall hull loads, but the result is excellent. In terms of her overall look, I think the decision to have a plumb bow with a bowsprit and an aft overhang was excellent. The effect is exactly what we were looking for: timeless elegance. Working with Baltic is always a pleasure for me. After developing many projects together over many years, I know the people well and how they work: they pay enormous attention to the client and the product, plus the workforce’s experience, generation after generation, means they can brilliantly interpret the commissioning owner’s requests and solve all and any problems.

128

Pink Gin sports a plumb bow and bowsprit as well as a deckhouse so subtle it never interrupts the elegance of the design plan. This is a sloop with a lot of sail, designed for speed even in the very light Mediterranean breezes. Her 7-metre deep keel was also something of a design challenge and, at anchor, can be lifted to 4.5 metres

e are delighted to have created the interiors for Pink Gin and also the exterior lines with the Judel/Vrolijk studio. This superyacht epitomises all the qualities and unique features of the philosophy behind the much-admired Pink Gin “world”. We used very high-quality materials to create a high-impact style that is also slightly provocative as well as elegant and intimate. It is designed to offer the owner absolute comfort on his long voyages around the world. New additions include two opening hatches on the exterior, one forward at the master suite level and the other amidships leading directly into the lobby, an absolute first on a sailing yacht. Pink Gin isn’t easy to pigeonhole because she doesn’t slot into any existing category. She surprises, inspires and goes beyond all barriers. We started with a blank page and then took our inspiration from art (see the Marcin Rusak table with real flowers and leaves set in resin), men’s fashion (the handles on the bathroom closets) and music (the piano is a reminder of a sunset the owner enjoyed in Porto Cervo

130

listening to a local pianist)… The finishes and textures of the surfaces play a very important role right throughout the boat as unique materials have been paired quite creatively to deliver a very tactile effect. Mixing “stained” oak with a metallic finish, luxury velvets and leathers produced a sophisticated, intimate impact. I would say that the main characteristic of the interior is the meticulous attention to detail: it’s evident in everything from the made-to-measure carpets to monogrammed coat hangers and the different finishes in all the bathrooms. Pink Gin is an elaborate mix of styles and inspirations put together by the designers, project team, crew, Baltic Yachts craftspeople, artisans and suppliers from around the world. But most of all she is the product of the owner’s passion and suggestions. Working on this yacht was a marvellous challenge because she is not simply the evolution of an existing yacht but a genuine revolution for the design world that reflects her owner’s passion and personality.

There are many and varied artworks aboard too: the sculpture in the guest foyer (top) is by Roberto Fabelo; the kitchen wall (left, page opposite) is actually an oil-on-metal painting by Roberto Diago. Beside it is a close-up of the gorgeous table in the saloon created by Marcin Rusak. The day head is unique (top, right): its walls are trimmed in silk featuring hand-painted fish so that it feels like you’re walking into an aquarium

n a genuinely custom yacht like the Baltic 175 Pink Gin, it is essential to get the details clear in the preliminary stages. That is why we built 1:1 scale models of various parts of the boat such as the master stateroom, the fold-out balconies and the large central cockpit so that the owner could actually walk around, sit down and test out the final effect before the boat was built. All of the interiors were built in modules outside the craft well before the yacht was completed to ensure a faster, more efficient work chain. We optimised both the vibration and noise-reduction systems and those for white/black water treatment. The revolutionary Force Feedback Steering System developed by Baltic Yachts with the Swiss company Esoro mimics the loads and movement caused by the waves and side forces, relaying them back to the wheel to give the helmsman the immediate and realistic direct steering feel. The winch package spans four Rondal 12Ts, 6 Rondal captive winches and 4 further winches for the sheets. The 67.9m carbon mast is also by Rondal and has five sets of spreaders supported by a Carbo-link carbon rig. For a mast of that size you need a deep keel and a huge amount of sail. That said, when you’ve finished sailing in the evening, you can still anchor close to the beach because the draft can be shrunk from 7m to less than 4.5m. The pre-preg structure with external GPR and Kevlar reinforcements is extremely stiff and does an excellent job of dealing with the loads of the rig underway. Baltic Yachts also used ultrasound to check for any weak points and not a single one was found. Pink Gin is the second largest craft Baltic Yachts has built in its 44-year history (after the 60m Hetairos), and she is a perfect example of the yard’s ability to upsize through its carbon lamination experience. This boat certainly raises the bar in sailing superyacht construction and will go down as a milestone in yachting history.

Pink Gin will make a mark in terms of technological innovation as well as style and design. Her steering system is a case in point: it requires no physical link between the rudder and the wheel. A control sensor at the wheel ‘talks’ to the ram electronically, relaying instructions while giving the helmsman direct steering-type feedback

industrial era, we have become so used to convenience that we are no longer able to see the complexity of things,” he cautions. There is one sector, however, that this renaissance man has yet to explore. “I have never designed a yacht. I haven’t had the opportunity yet, but I would like to very much. I think that the design culture in that sphere has produced the same mistakes as the hotel world. The dominant idea is to transfer domestic living culture to those spaces. But if you do that, you lose the sense of context and I think it’s a kind of regression. When you are in an aircraft, you are not at home. The same thing goes for when you are on a boat. A yacht project for me has to be connected to water and then develop from there.” So although Rashid may not yet have designed a boat, he has clearly given the subject thought and has strong ideas on the rights and wrongs of how to go about it.

NIGHT-TIME

I N S P I R AT I O N Foresti & Suardi Design produces outdoor accessories with modern, linear designs, creating pieces with a cool refinement by Paola Bertelli

G

ood ideas often come during the night – and that was certainly true for Luciano Paissoni, as his insomnia is

to blame for the existence of the “Foresti & Suardi Design” brand. Foresti & Suardi (without the “Design”), now led by Luciano Paissoni, was founded in 1961. It specialises in manufacturing nautical accessories in metal (steel, alluminium, brass), with cleats, portholes, lights, gangways and handles as its core business. The foundry is the company’s heart. In past years these items were mainly produced in series, but nowadays they are more often custom objects highlighting quality and design. It’s because of the market’s increasing emphasis on design, especially Italian design, that Luciano Paissoni sought to go beyond his established product line and create high-end outdoor furnishing complements. “I wanted new products that were entirely different from those already on the market. Products expressing excellence, with a strong identity that can immediately be associated with our brand. They should also be made in limited production runs”. This is what lies behind the brand’s name, “Foresti & Suardi Design”, almost a play on words that forges links with the company’s original title. Christian Grande, the go-to designer for Luciano Paissoni, approved of the idea and the first pieces soon appeared. Their characteristic style is modern, linear but not minimalist, and their essential look is at home in any surroundings. The interiors on the main and lower decks are modern and borrow their layout from residential architecture with lots of freestanding elements in there too. Minotti supplied the Andersen slim sofa in the saloon and the Amelie couches used in the VIP staterooms. Polyform, on the other hand, is the design brain behind the marble-topped Concorde table and Grace dining chairs in the saloon, while Porada did the Daphne armchair. The Oto Mini coffee tables came from Radice & Gallotti, and the iconic Saarinen Tulip is by Knoll. The table lamps in the VIP cabins are by Viabizzuno. When it came to materials and finishes, the focus was on using a few elements with extreme cohesion. That meant Canaletto walnut for the walls and floors, lacquered ceiling panels and marble in the bathrooms. A few well-chosen exceptions to that rule, however, deftly did away with any risk of monotony: hence some of the walls in the full-beam master suite on the main deck are trimmed in leather. The headrests in all the four guest cabins on the lower deck are all leather but in different colours. Other walls are fabric-trimmed and the ones behind the bedside tables were lacquered using an unusual product that yielded the patina of an antique

he new 120’ is the first planing yacht our studio designed for Custom Line. We set ourselves two goals with this project: to develop a restyling of the line as a whole that would retain a sense of brand continuity by emphasising certain distinctive elements, and also to boost contact with the sea by attempting to eradicate any possible barrier between interior and exterior. Custom Line entrusted us with the entire project, both exteriors and interiors, and the latter were styled in collaboration with Margherita Casprini.

150

In the exteriors, we wanted to give the yacht a sleek, powerful profile and we also incorporated styling cues from other design fields, particularly automotive and residential architecture. Additionally, we very meticulously set about highlighting both forms and volumes through fit-out choices that reflected the very latest contemporary living trends. The Strategic Product Committee and the Ferretti Group’s Engineering Division provided pivotal support with the project’s development, enabling us to combine new proposals with the functionality and technical prowess that have made Custom Line such a success to date. The floor-to-ceiling windows and raised floor turn the saloon into a panoramic terrace with truly unparalleled views. The slightly curved side windows and the cutaways in front of the saloon and the master suite forward enhance the feeling of being even closer to the sea and the sense of contact with it. We focused particular attention on the exterior areas which have always been one of the brand’s unusual features. We designed a lounge foremost. The upper deck combines the comfort of a flybridge with the sportiness of a coupé. The protection afforded by the side glazing integrated with the hard top and its skylight above the cocktail area, the lounge and the monkey bridge means that guests can see out while seated. The relaxation area with the hydromassage tub and freestanding furnishings can be shaded from the sun by a bimini that hides away in the hard top and is supported aft by two poles integrated into the superstructure.

The two-piece glass patio door separating the saloon and cockpit was a major feat of leading-edge engineering (see opposite). It angles at 45 degrees and outdoes the usual sliding panels as, thanks to a special mechanism, it tilts outwards and then upwards before disappearing neatly. The hull lines are dominated by the forward extension of the wetted surface. A move designed to guarantee high performance and low fuel consumption for a yacht of this volume and displacement

151

Interior Design Francesco Paszkowski Design with Margherita Casprini

W

e took our inspiration for the interior layout from luxury residential dÊcor codes. We deliberately stayed with very few materials aboard and these are used consistently and harmoniously in all the yacht’s spaces, to achieve an overall impression of extreme elegance and refinement. Canaletto walnut alternates with white lacquered panelling to balance the presence of light and dark tones in the dÊcor. For the bathroom walls and tops we used bronze travertine marble while we went for Calacatta marble for the bedside table tops. We chose leather, steel and transparent glass for the accents. The main saloon was conceived as a single open space flooded with natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. To emphasise the volumes, soft drapes divide the spaces without every actually separating them. We developed a very careful combination of wood and

152

lacquered panelling to give a contemporary and welcoming stamp to the decor, which also mixes iconic brands with custommade pieces. We worked hard on certain aesthetically and functionally important elements such as supporting columns designed to include lighting, audio and air conditioning systems. A key factor in the yacht’s overall design was a constant striving to create an insideoutside relationship which we even pursued in the guest cabins. This is particularly true amidships on the lower deck where the furnishing layout enhances the water views because the beds are athwartship and facing the windows.

Beyond the dining area on the main deck lies the large horseshoe-shaped galley (left) which also leads down to the crew area. Bottom, a close-up of the bronze travertine used for the tops and walls in the bathrooms. Page opposite, left, one of the two VIP cabins with an athwartships bed facing the window and sea

he Custom Line 120’ is aimed at an owner who wants to recreate the atmosphere of his own home ashore with the added plus of having purchased an authentic naval engineering masterpiece. Although it is part of a series, it is very much a “made-to-measure” yacht, which is why we decided to work on the restyling of our planing line with Paszkowski Design as, by virtue of being a “bespoke design studio”, it is perfectly in line with our brand. The emphasis on research and innovation combined with design focus was principally aimed at achieving maximum functionality in all spaces aboard and excellent comfort too. Most notable of the design and technological innovations are the bridge where the skipper can use LOOP, the Naviop-Simrad integrated bridge system which has touchscreens set flush into the console and creates a direct interface with the ship functions, for total control. Aft, the DMT (Dual Mode Transom) system was

154

implemented by installing two sliding panels which, underway, hide the steps leading up to the cockpit and create a feeling of complete aesthetic purity. When the yacht is at anchor, they slide back into the garage door, allowing guests to walk up. Another standout innovation is the way the sole of the saloon was raised with a floating floor, which gives incomparable sea views. Equally, the larger underfloor volume allowed both improved sound insulation and provided more space for plant. The patio door to the saloon is definitely original as well as innovative, and was developed in partnership with Mecaer Aviation Group, an aeronautics company. The hull was built from composite with particular focus and care on the structures to guarantee maximum solidity and lightness. Skilfully-used carbon in the superstructure resulted in an elegant design of the aft end of the fly without having to resort to pillars for support in the cockpit.

QUALITY OF LIGHT ABOVE ALL Creating the perfect lighting system demands a technical soul. That’s the approach adopted by Luce 5, lightmakers for the high fashion world, now facing the challenge of the yacht sector by Paola Bertelli

DMX channels, 350 hours of R&D. These numbers describe the dazzling façade of the Bulgari flagship store on New York’s 5th Avenue, now the setting for an endless series of animated light shows. The creators of this work is Luce 5 in collaboration with Frank Sapadaro, Senior Architect at the famous Peter Marino architecture studio. Luce 5 is an Italian company with over twenty years of experience in the field, enabling it to refine and enhance the technical design qualities and customisation skills it now exports all over the world. This constant growth has led Luce 5 to become a highly innovative company, partner to important international brands. Its client portfolio includes fashion brands like Prada, Miu Miu, Bulgari, Fendi, Boucheron, Zanotti and Zegna. They are demanding clients, and the high quality of the lighting these companies require has now become Luce 5’s own work standard. Its approach to light design is first of all technical, focusing on light, its mechanics and its control.

156

“We define technology that complements design”, says Riccardo Di Bene, CEO of Luce 5 Yachting. Luce 5 doesn’t only supply light units, it designs custom key-in-hand lighting systems that include apps developed in-house to manage animation and control. “Our projects,” Riccardo Di Bene continues, “Are made to measure for clients. We develop the entire project on the basis of their requirements and needs. We design the mechanisms in 3D, selecting only the highest-quality, latest generation LEDs (LED binning), and develop the control electronics and software that animate the lighting systems. As well as assembling our projects ourselves, we build and test all the prototypes and mock-ups needed for final client approval”. “Designing the LED chips in-house is crucial if we are to succeed in controlling the type of light emitted by the various installations,” says Mauro Favalli, R&D Technical Manager, because “The light we see isn’t the original light from the source, it is influenced by the material of the body it passes through”. design choices adopted, which so far have proved very successful. With a rotor diameter of 7.6 metres, 2.5 metre maximum height and a width of 1.6 metres, the Zephir’s small dimensions make it especially suitable for the flying tender sector, as it can operate off drilling platforms and yacht helipads. As for performance, maximum speed in level flight is 185 km/h (100 kts) with a range of over two hours giving an operational range of over 300 km. It carries 120 litres of fuel and a reserve of 10 litres. The cockpit width, often restricted in light helicopters, is a generous 134 cm (4.4 ft), with a volume of 320 litres available for luggage. Of course, a hi-tech machine like this boasts integrated digital instrumentation for maximum situational awareness.
