editorial I

remember the feeling I had when writing the editorial for the very first issue of The ONE Yacht & Design a year ago. That feeling stayed with me throughout the 2015 Dubai International Boat Show to which my colleagues and I travelled to introduce our new project to all the yards, designers, architects, furniture experts and suppliers attending the event. I remember the satisfied looks we exchanged when we met back at our hotel every evening after yet another day of intense presentations. It was a good beginning and augured well for what was to follow. Now, a year on, the gems that we used to symbolise the first four issues (Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Diamond) have given way to metals: this fifth outing, the first of 2016, is the Gold Issue, and will be followed by Platinum (to coincide with the Singapore Show), Bronze (Cannes and Monte Carlo) and Silver (Fort Lauderdale). Thanks to the quality and unique nature of our project, we have succeeded in developing an extensive distribution network that not only puts us on newsstands in 32 different countries but also sees The ONE Yacht & Design distributed in airports, exclusive locations (Harrods), aboard Exclusive Jets aircraft, in the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs (ONE°15 Marina in Singapore, the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London, Republic of Singapore Yacht Club to name but a few), and exclusive hotels and resorts. A full list is available on the platinummedialab.com website and is updated monthly. It is, we are delighted to say, a work in progress… The very best to you all,

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]

MILVIO RICCI HEAD OF MARKAGAIN PREMIUM DIVISION by Désirée Sormani

What are your predictions for the luxury

How is Markagain contributing to getting

market in 2016?

capital circulating again?

We are predicting that the luxury market will continue to grow at a rate of around 4 per cent as it did in 2015. The nautical segment is growing even faster, particularly in some non-EU countries.

Thanks to our background and professionalism, Markagain has really earned the respect of both the institutions and clients on the market. That means foreign clients, and their representatives, feel safe and protected, and this attracts foreign capital to Italy.

Which of the sectors you’re involved in is flourishing best?

The nautical sector. At any one time, you’ll find 100 products we’re managing ready for sale. Do you think the yachting sector is getting back on its feet in Italy? Yes, despite all the mistakes that have been made, including political ones, clients are deciding to get back to enjoying the sea and our marvellous coasts, albeit in small craft, by which I mean up to 60’.

14

What advantages does the new Markagain Biz offer that Premium doesn’t? Markagain Biz’s focus is machinery, equipment, vehicles and real estate. It is a dedicated platform for selling goods and equipment to businesses. It leverages the huge success and credibility of its sister product, Premium. Our client services all share a dedicated expert team and similar processes and are available to both buyers and sellers.

Although clearly inspired by the 61m M/Y Saramour, CRN’s first superyacht project with the latter, these new fully-custom, steel and aluminum 72m and 80m yachts have much larger volumes and introduce innovative architectural solutions. Paszkowski has made the lines more slender and rounded the shapes for a lighter profile and more compact impact, while extensive linear glazed surfaces and see-through balconies stylishly eliminate barriers with water, air and nature. Both models have six decks and five VIP staterooms plus an owner’s apartment. In the 80m, the owner’s quarters are on the upper deck, with a business area, gym and massage room. Guest well-being is a priority with three pools and an expansive beach club. www.crn-yacht.com

after the announcement of the sale, brokered by Imperial, last July. Hull FB271 is a triumph of elegance with a delivery date scheduled for summer 2018. Imperial has commissioned Luca Dini Design to create her interiors. So far the word is that both the furnishings and the way in which the materials are used will have a contemporary feel with Art Deco touches. The effect will be sumptuous and rich yet never over-the-top. The studio is aiming to create a sense of uniformity in the colour palette in the upholstery and the various coatings used too. The yacht will also be awash with wide, generous windows specifically penned to create the perfect pairing of sky and sea. www.lucadinidesign.com

Sofas in ivory fabric enlivened by a scattering of red cushions face the TV and the bar unit, which has smoked glass inserts at the front and a Crema Luna marble top. A partition with self-tinting glass panels separates this space from the helm station, where the monitors are built into a glass instrument panel. An atmosphere of elegance and calm is created by the use of bleached oak and horizontal grained Daniela walnut for the walls and the fronts of the custom-made furniture, while black leather lining the ceiling is echoed on the sides of the beds and the lower part of the bedheads. A side stairway leads to the lower deck, where the owner specified that the sleeping area should be preceded to port by a welcoming social area, a relaxation space with a roomy sofa and megascreen TV. The guest cabins - one double, a twin with bunk bed and a forward VIP cabin - are finished in the same coolly elegant, almost masculine style that also graces the owner’s suite. This full-beam space lies aft, and opens onto a small study with desk and dressing table. Crema Luna marble appears throughout the bathrooms, and has also been chosen for the tops and bar unit surface, while square sections of greycoloured grès porcelain stoneware create a mosaic effect in the showers. The owner requested personalised bedlinen, with Pratesi adding an extra touch of elegance.

n true Mangusta style, the yacht’s external lines are sleek and sporty, boasting the yard’s recent structural

and aesthetic innovations - the new main deck single window in the saloon and the very spacious sundeck with more aggressive, modern with attractive railings. The sundeck can be used as a private area by the owner, and can be equipped with a second helm station. The recent structural modifications introduced on the new models are perfectly integrated into the yacht’s elegant, timeless outline. But owners are also attracted to Mangustas because of the design of the exterior spaces: the owner has fully embraced the yard’s proposal of large relaxation areas and a flybridge equipped with a bar unit for social interaction. This new design benefits from all the Mangusta 165’s best stylistic elements. We’ve already talked about its aesthetic-structural features - the spacious flybridge with dynamic lines and new superstructure window shapes. The Mangusta 132 is a new model that combines all the aesthetic and structural innovations introduced on the new Mangusta models over the past two years. One difference is the new layout, which includes another side door aft to provide independent access for the crew, providing greater privacy for owner and guests. Technically, the Mangusta 132 is backed by this family yard’s impressive reserves of experience and its ability to keep moving forward - on board comfort, already a distinctive feature of Mangusta craft, has been even further enhanced by the gyroscopic stabilisers. These reduce roll under way and at anchor, increasing the yacht’s potential - now it’s possible to sail at displacement speeds of 12-15 knots with minimal roll. The new generation propulsion system and advanced hull lines also mean lower consumption.

42

The flybridge is a terrace over the sea - it’s equipped with a second helm station and comfy seats, sunpad and bar - an ideal area for enjoying seagoing life in total privacy

among passengers - all in all, these allow the yacht to be used in different ways, but also in close contact with the sea. As with all Mangusta designs, there is plenty of light throughout the yacht - the Group’s philosophy is that those on board should feel as though they were in their own home. As well as allowing natural light to enter, the large saloon windows provide a 360 degree view of the exterior. In line with the usual Mangusta practice, the yacht’s made-to-measure layout reflects the owner’s preferences. There are four guest cabins on this 132 instead of five because the owner wanted a media room. The choices made have led to the creation of elegant, contemporary interiors full of light, spaces, wood and select materials.

Above, material and wood samples by the Overmarine Group Design Dept (on opposite page, top), which has personalised the Mangusta 132’s interiors and exteriors (bottom, some sketches) in line with the owner’s specifications - a truly sartorial build!

45

The Shipyard Francesco Frediani, Commercial Director

T

he Mangusta 132 clearly displays the recent technical and stylistic developments achieved by the yard. Its exteriors show the yard’s hallmark

lines, sleek and sporty, plus several recently-introduced aesthetic and structural features like the new one-piece main deck window and the more spacious sundeck. But its technical developments make it truly significant - new engines, a hydrojet propulsion system and Zero Speed gyroscopic stabilisers all mean greater on-board comfort and enable the yacht to sail at low speeds in comfort and with reduced consumption. Nowadays owners are demanding yachts that offer several areas for social interaction - large spaces like those in a domestic environment, as well as a gym and spa for on board relaxation and entertainment and above all a constant contact with the sea, which means generous open spaces. There are two crucial technical elements - the increasing attention shown by clients to lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. The Mangusta 132 offers ample interior and exterior spaces, quiet running and a stability that leaves passengers with the impression they are in their own home. This is the owner’s second Mangusta craft, and he knew what he wanted on board right from the start. That’s why we worked in perfect harmony, with a very stimulating exchange of ideas. In order to hold onto the leadership position we’ve achieved, we must innovate and renew - we’ll continue working on other new Maxi Open Yachts, focusing on new sizes and increasing efficiency, and the new fast displacement, long range and bespoke yacht sectors - we have the ability and technical skills, and we aim to play a key role, especially in the 40-65 metre range.

The G500 is the first Gulfstream with sidesticks, which control a fly-by-wire system. Both sticks (pilot and co-pilot) feature force-feedback capability, as well as a connection between the port and starboard controls

The crew is provided with Honeywell Primus Epic avionics, not the cutting edge in integrated systems but a well-known, stable platform now surrounded by 10 touchscreen displays, many having interchangeable functions, with three controllers in the overhead panel. As for primary controls, the G500 is the first Gulfstream with sidesticks, which manage a fly-bywire system. The sticks feature force-feedback plus a connection between the port and starboard controls, eliminating the need for a selector to determine which pilot is flying the plane. Despite the fly-by-wire, the philosophy behind the avionics is more reminiscent of the American Boeing than the European Airbus there are elimination systems and controls but they are operated in total transparency with regard to the pilots, who fly the G500 like any other aircraft. This aircraft resembles a small apartment measuring over 30 square metres for flying in total comfort, using small airports with runways at least 1,500 metres long like Albenga or Cannes. The Gulfstream 500 is easily one of the most comfortable planes the industry will be offering over the next few years. But be patient - if you order one now it won’t be delivered until 2019.

Some of his latest work has been designing the new OceanSport series for CRN, although six of his yachts for Heesen are also due to be launched this year and next, as is a new series for Mulder. “Omega Architects is the first non-Italian, Northern European design company that has been invited to think about the CRN identity. The new OceanSport design had to feature an identity, comparable with the award-winning 74m Yalla, but be very different at the same time. And to do so not only for a 75m, but also for a 61m and 52m, all based on CRN platforms,” explains Laupman. “We have developed a rational system to explore developing the heritage of a client, which areas to focus on. We develop this intuitively, but also rationally.” The OceanSport concept has two elements fused into one design: the typical sporty Omega profile characteristic and the ocean-going properties of the CRN hull, translated into a ship-like exterior. “With the OceanSport series, we had to add a design innovation as well, and we managed to do so with the unique split level beach club arrangement,” he adds. The design features an integrated hull and body, Omega’s trademark, with

nrico Gobbi is the creative genius behind Team for Design and, surprisingly in this day and age, every single one of his creations begins very simply as pencil

sketch on a blank sheet of paper. This is something about which he is most emphatic: “Although computer generation is absolutely vital to the final drafting of any project, we don’t want it to dominate the superior creativity of the hand-done design which will triumph every time”. Born in Venice, where water and beauty are part of the scenery, Gobbi grew up breathing the sea air and immediately fell under the spell of the nautical world, even though, professionally, he was initially more interested in civil architecture. “Halfway through my course at the University of Venice, I began researching the nautical market. By the time I finished my studies, I had fallen hopelessly in love with that world. It’s no surprise therefore that I did my degree thesis on a ship. That was where it all began…” Gobbi moved to the

68

69

one of Gobbi’s latest projects, the Rossinavi Aston 66. “The mission was to create a megayacht with lots of interior spaces that was also fast and dynamic. If you look at the side view, this ready-to-build 66-metre jumps off the page. It looks like it’s already running… Its straight, tight lines and long, continuous, never overly-high windows give the impression that it’s already moving”. Those sporty proportions also transition to “the upper deck which has been brought well aft and kept low to leave plenty of space on the bow which is reminiscent of the very pronounced bonnet of a luxury sports coupé. That said, however, the yacht is still a large floating villa with big interior spaces and a huge amount of light”. The owner gets his own exclusive 70 square metre quarters too, with a full-beam stateroom forward on the main deck and two balconies, one on either side, like the wings of a sports car. “Exterior-wise, the most impactful section is the stern, which is really the calling-card of any megayacht these days. Water cascades between two sheets of glass from the pool right down a black stripe to the deck. Also, when the hatch is open, a series of LED strip lights of the same length on the various decks creates a cathedral-like effect all the way up to the mast and that motif is picked up on the stairs and the air grilles on the main deck.”

A yacht that can be lived to the full thanks to a host of communal areas. The calling card of all modern megayachts is the stern section which here features water cascading between two sheets of glass from the pool right down a black stripe to the deck. Simply spectacular

ogether with the Baltic and the Nauta Design teams, we came up with a very powerful sloop with a large sail plan combined with high stability. The boat has a lifting keel configuration with a maximum draft of 5.5m and a minimum draft of 3.5m to guarantee the boat can still get into most harbours and also that, with the keel down, sailing performance is impressive. The yacht’s concept is for worldwide cruising, comfort at sea and not being dependent on lying in harbours or berthing in marinas: a real bluewater cruiser with a lot of volume for stowage spaces and huge tank capacities. The design brief was for a timeless, elegant-looking yacht. We originally proposed a deck saloon based on our Baltic 112’, but with more stretched and angled lines. But eventually we settled on a wraparound window deckhouse with an integrated fixed hard top that looks very elegant. Nauta Design worked with us on refining the final styling of the exterior at this stage. Construction is a vacuum-infused sandwich carbon laminate, with carbon UDS in high loaded areas. This combination produces a light end product. The yacht also features a large stern garage for storage of all the toys, a fold-down anchor system, a “triple” cockpit layout with separate areas for living, sunbathing and sail handling and steering. The new Baltic 116’ is designed for shorthanded cruising as well as occasional sportier sailing/racing – nearly all the handling can be done from the aft sailing cockpit. The carbon-fibre rig has a total of three forestays, two permanently set. This allows for a non-overlapping easy-to-control jib, a genoa staysail and a storm jib. A big MPS can be sailed from the bow too.

An ideal rig for long-distance cruising and passage-making that can easily be adapted for Mediterranean sailing with a Code 0 or gennakers. Opposite page: Rolf E. challenging aspect of the design was to fulfil the owner’s request for a properly elegant hard top- shaded guest cockpit that followed the sporty line of the yacht. The size of

this huge area, which is the heart of outside life and includes a large dining table to port and a convertible lounging/dining to starboard, demanded a large, solid structure. Our goal was to ensure the hard top did not dominate the profile of the yacht. Built from carbon, the structure arches up from the low-profile deckhouse in a delicate curve, fully harmonised with the remaining superstructure lines, lending the yacht an attractive, personal look. At the specific request of the owner’s wife, we integrated an electric curved sliding glass window into the forward windshield, to better ventilate the whole area both while sailing and at anchor. Moreover, while sunbathing on the fully cushioned deckhouse top, she can easily reach inside the cockpit and grab a cold drink, book or phone from a tray mounted on the companionway handrails. Our brief was for an “owner forward” layout with five guest cabins and three crew cabins. We distributed the guest area around the 270° panoramic view deckhouse saloon: two cabins and the owner’s suite are forward of it and two are just aft, to avoid wasted space, long aisles or large passageways. The gleaming white mast is in the forward passageway. We concentrated the crew area and operations aft to separate the crew and guests areas and facilitate the crew’s work with a short, vertical connection between interior and deck, and vice versa. The interior volumes are generous, especially in the owner’s area, which includes a very large walk-in closet, usually only seen on 50-metre motoryachts. The décor recalls the tradition of the great yachting era. All the interiors are in teak, with maple-striped floorboards and doors. The atmosphere is classic but bright, thanks to the large hull windows and the white inserts on walls and bulkheads.

The yacht’s engineer also was based at the yard in Jakobstad for a year providing additional help in all areas involving customisation and systems. We find it particularly useful when the owner and members of the permanent crew are involved to this extent. Doryan weighs just under 95 tons at half load,

Creative tables

Plastic has a new look, combining functionality with the prestigious sensuality of crystal glass. This transformation and the experience of Kartell, historic name in Italian design, has inspired one of the most interesting on-board tableware collections

he name Kartell immediately brings to mind a series of objects that have become icons, and which were designed by some of the most famous names on the international creative scene - especially the kind of object the brand has always focused on, like chairs, armchairs, lamps, tables and bookcases. More recently its offer has widened to include collections of upholstered items, bathroom furnishings, fashion accessories and gifts. In 2014 the company, which was founded in 1949, decided to branch out into tableware, inspiring the creation of a wonderfully fresh, innovative range that includes several lines appealing to younger, more glam tastes and some with a more sophisticated, seductive appeal. Kartell collaborated with designers and chefs offering diverse skills, but both groups were able to contribute a personal take. One of the top designers is Patricia Urquiola, creator of the “Jellies Family” collection in coloured and transparent PMMA, reflecting her versatile, sophisticated personality. Her objects evoke precious cut glass, shattering light into a play of glittering shards. TruthON THE PLATE In spite of his Michelin star, Stefano Cerveni prefers to describe himself as a cook rather than a chef, with an emphasis on simplicity and authenticity. Born into the profession and later a pupil of Gualtiero Marchesi, his work at the Locanda Due Colombe launched him towards the illustrious position he now holds at the restaurant at the top of the Triennale museum in Milan, from where he sends us his recipe for owners by Antonella Euli

eeting Stefano Cerveni in one of Milan’s most magical venues is a wonderful surprise. His new kingdom is at the top of the Triennale,

in an Osteria offering a view with a flavour of authenticity - the kind of honesty to be found in cooking that immediately reveals what it’s made of. The tastes are sincere, the ingredients excellent and the impression each dish leaves reveals the touch of Cerveni’s expert hand. While given a new twist, at the table his great classics and traditional Italian dishes still emphasise strong links with the Franciacorta region and the nation in general. We first met at his Franciacorta stronghold, the Due Colombe in Borgonato di Cortefranca, and even then he was inspiring amazement and admiration for his deeply traditional dishes reinterpreted with a respectful creativity. Stefano was born into the profession, growing up surrounded by the smells, tastes and sounds of the kitchen, proud to steal the secrets of the trade from his father Giuseppe and grandmother Elvira, joint hosts at the Locanda Due Colombe. Franciacorta runs through his veins like a fine wine and his passion for cooking won out over his love for the piano. So the young man was transformed from a pupil of Gualtiero Marchesi (“The great master who has taught all of us”) into a Michelin-starred chef. “Please don’t call me a chef, I’m a cook, and even if I have a star, I never forget my roots. I cook for pleasure above all, and for my guests’ enjoyment. I use technique and passion to create good, simple, healthy dishes. It’s a path I set out on when I was young, and I intend to keep on following it because I believe that no matter how innovative a gastronomic creation may be, it should also be possible for everyone to read and understand”. After the success of the Due Colombe, Stefano accepted the challenge and won the competition to take the reins

at the Temporary Restaurant on the terraces of the Triennale di Milano although “temporary” doesn’t seem an apt description for a restaurant that will stay there for the next four years. A new task and at the same time the starting point for a new, demanding yet highly prestigious story. Stefano won the approval of the Jury, headed by Claudio De Albertis, charged with selecting the most creative and convincing project. Now Stefano is head chef, flanked by Fabrizio Ferrari, a top-class “cook” from Pavia (that’s how he describes himself on his business card) and also a former pupil of the great Marchesi. And together they create what can only be described as culinary poetry, as enchanting as the restaurant’s location overlooking the whole of Milan, a greenhouse surrounded by an aromatic urban garden and the kitchen staff at work in the foreground, giving life to his idea of a toplevel osteria in its purest form. Prestigious food and an easy-chic service. This simplicity can also be found in his owner’s menu - warm spaghetti, scampi, sweet paprika and Clavisius caviar. “Straightforward flavours and preparation. Peel the scampi, cut the tails into bit-sized morsels and keep the juice from the heads. Sauté in extra virgin olive oil at a temperature that’s not too high, so as not to lose the fragrance, then add the chives. Remove from the heat, add the scampi tails and mount with the juice from the heads, then add a pinch of Maldon salt, pepper and paprika powder. Boil the pasta in abundant salt water, then cool under running water. Mount the pasta with the sauce over a low heat and serve when warm, garnished with caviar, chives and extra virgin olive oil. Suerte is beautifully detailed too with carbon-look cornices, backlit door handles. Her furnishings are a mix of leading designer names (Knoll, Gervasoni, Dedar, Casamilano, Gallotti, Arketipo, Minotti, Flexform, Cassina, Maxalto, Phase Design…) and bespoke pieces. The décor itself is, in fact, a clever cocktail with Catellani & Smith, Nahoor, Contardi and Martinelli lights picking out sculptures and modern objets by Kare Italia, art photographs by Cobra Art, paintings, Arcahorn boxes, Klaar Prims pieces and even a wooden “moon” by Thierry Martenon. The slate and teak beach club is manna from heaven for chill-out lovers with a massage cabin, sauna, steam room and TV. The fly, on the other hand is a haven for night owls as the touch-and-go helipad converts to a dance floor. 105

S

uerte’s main characteristics can be summarised in two owner-specified concepts that pop up again and again on board: meticulous attention to

privacy and a strong emphasis on communal spaces, both interior and exterior. The main change from the first design is that Suerte is entered from the main deck through a kind of buffer area between exterior and interior and, unusually, from the side. Other original design choices include the liveable area aft on the main deck (a sort of winter garden with low sofas near the windows), the beach club (separate but closely linked with the main with a chill-out wellness centretype atmosphere), the master bed (raised to allow occupants enjoy the view), the skylight, the glazed, wall-mounted wine cellar in the dining area and the fish tank that separates the home cinema from the dining area and allows light flow in from stern to stem. There are also a couple of aesthetic solutions born of technical necessity: the owner, for instance, wanted a large TV and cinema room and we had to find a section of the boat that would be easy to blackout. The area we chose is perfect because it doesn’t get much light anyway and, once the sliding doors aft and forward are closed, it is separated off and darkened. The plant on the upper deck is hidden in the central block and also used to mark out the different functions of the space (living area with open fireplace

and large-screen TV, sushi bar, card table, casual lounge/extra guest cabin complete with discreet en suite bathroom). The skylight is one of the most interesting elements as it’s completely different from any we’ve done before with a double light-water effect. I was delighted to “revisit” the design because it gave us the chance to rethink and evolve certain solutions.

There are two recurring themes aboard: prioritised privacy and an emphasis on communal spaces both interior and exterior. This shot, a side walkway; below, the geometric-style upper deck; opposite page, the wellness area which has unusual slate walls

The Interior Designer Paszkowski Design

T

he owner wanted a yacht with a strong personality in a consistent, balanced contemporary style, so we played around with materials, using the same ones in

different combinations to retain the family feeling without getting repetitive. Communal areas were another priority and we created large zones that could, depending on requirements, be separated off by “light” dividers. There are only two types of wood aboard – teak for the flooring and oak for the veneers. The back wall in the wine “cellar” in the dining room is 3D-effect light oak. Colour-wise, we went for a neutral base with dark contrasting elements, such as the grey sofas, the black central block on the upper deck, the slate in the beach club and the black lacquering for the shelves in the VIP stateroom. We used Carrara marble in the bathrooms (with the exception of the VIP where onyx was the choice) and Jerusalem Stone for the steps on the interior stairs, the table top and one wall of the central block on the upper deck. We also used stitched leather and suede for some of the ceiling liners and closet doors. Different combinations of the materials mark out the various areas: the owner’s office is elegant and severe, the VIP sees wood combined with lacquered surfaces, the upper deck feels like one big, welcoming saloon, while the winter garden has an almost impalpable atmosphere thanks to its glazing and light curtains. We alternated pieces of designer furniture chosen by the owner with others custom-made by specialist craftsmen we’ve been working with for many years (the bedside lockers, beds, closets, the stools at the bar in the beach club and the dining table were all designed by the studio).

Margherita Casprini collaborated on the interiors (see photo). Prioritising communal areas was a major factor in the design and produced large spaces that could be separated by “light” dividers. The same materials are used again and again but in different combinations to create very different effects. Just two kinds of wood are seen aboard: teak for the floors and oak for the veneers

The Shipyard Guido Orsi, President Tankoa

T

ankoa may be a new yard but it is deeply rooted in shipbuilding history as are the highly experienced people that work there. My family, for

example, managed the Baglietto yard for many years and set it back on its feet before selling it on. Now with Suerte, we’ve finally given the people who know and respect us the possibility to actually touch and see first-hand our products. We had an enthusiastic response at the Monaco Yacht Show, in fact. Right from the start, we focused on larger 50-metre-and-over craft with a full-custom approach. We wanted a very high quality product to be able to provide a concrete alternative to our Northern European competitors. Our 50m yachts are built from in-house aluminium to make them lighter and faster, while the larger ones are steel and aluminium. For the rest, we subcontract to regular suppliers who guarantee us an excellent service in very short timescales. The fact that we stick to our delivery deadlines and offer superior quality boats that are on average 30 per cent less expensive than our competitors’ makes us very competitive. We also offer a complete client service with aftersales assistance and refitting. Suerte is a powerhouse of excellence, from the painting of her hull (two full cycles of Boero paint and stucco) to the quality of the materials used and the leading edge components (Crestron entertainment system, Primsa galley, etc.). There is 160 km of cabling aboard, 2,500 LED lights, soundproofing systems, floating panels for sound-damping and a complete absence of vibration…. The very best across the board, in other words. The design is contemporary yet classic so it will stand the test of time. However, it is also very much in tune with the current trend in the superyacht world towards a return to harmonious forms trimmed of stylistic, trendy excess.

Paolo Pininfarina is fiercely proud of his family heritage as the third generation to grace the company headquarters at Cambiano. “My brother Andrea and I were lucky enough to be part of a family in which our dad came home from work in a Ferrari. We are both engineers and we learned a lot in the real world. So ‘the bar was set high’ as they say…..” In short, if a design isn’t harmonious or innovative enough, or if it is too contemporary rather than timeless, then it won’t meet Pininfarina’s unparalleled criteria and so will never make it to the market. “The exclusivity of a name has to translate into exclusive products: only Pininfarina could design the Ferrari Sergio and only Pininfarina could design an 85 like this one”. Fincantieri wanted something different, genuinely innovative, a real breakaway craft. “So they remembered Destriero and came to us. The design is fantastic: we poured all our architectural and interior design experience into it as well as all the other skills we’ve developed over the last decade”. But what kind of owner will the Pininfarina 85 attract? “They will be young (at least mentally) and have a love of the future. They’ll be the kind of person looks at harmony and purity of form and is searching for something that will stand the test of time: which, of course, is our main goal.”

These images give an idea of Pininfarina’s diverse design talents in a wide variety of areas. It founded its Extra division in 1986 to expand its interests into industrial design, transportation design, architecture and interiors. Naval Architect Luca Vallebona

I

t was definitely a challenge but having an expert, sophisticated owner really helped. He listed his requirements and then gave me carte blanche when it came to interpreting them. I took my inspiration from some classic style cues that I knew he’d like which I offset with technical solutions to help me square the circle, so to speak. Not only did I have to “develop” the boat around the master suite on the upper deck but also keep it under the 500 GT mark. So I worked on the bow sections and on the volumes, and then I went for a plumb bow, a military look and a high sheer line, which optimally streamline the profile by balancing out the height. I delivered the required absolute privacy by designing stairs that go under the upper deck and then emerge directly in the forward working area so that the crew don’t see the owners sunning themselves. Working on the master suite, I saw it was reminiscent of the split-level saloons on sailing yachts. So I realised that some sailing yacht influences had trickled down into that design quite subconsciously as often happens in the creative process. They say the subconscious can play dirty tricks on you

126

Right: Serenity underway: the elegant upper deck is all-teak and furnished with sun pads and a sofa. This belongs to the private owner’s quarters and is thus very well protected from prying eyes. The integrated panoramic wheelhouse is on an upper half-deck

but sometimes it can be astonishing in a good way. I think the concept turned out really well. The excellent feedback we had at the Monaco Yacht Show proved that the boat was a hit. Its squarish, severe lines are striking but when you look closer you can see that I put in some curves that soften the masculine elements and give it a sense of movement. There is no beach club but that was a deliberate choice. As elegant and luxurious as they might be, they are still low, enclosed spaces and, to me, feel a little claustrophobic. Why would anyone who owned a megayacht want to spend time on a platform like that?

127

The Interior Designer Fatema Almaidan

T

he owner wanted a yacht with an Andalusian influence and a few eastern touches, something very

comfortable, liveable and intimate at once. As ever, I took my inspiration from a mix of cultures and nature: I like mixing different styles aboard that will suit different tastes. I think Middle Eastern and western design combine to perfection aboard Serenity and both go very well with the colours and materials used. Even the different tones in the cabins reflect the natural harmony I tend to go for and which I feel is essential. I knew exactly how this boat should be right from the start. Splitting the master suite into two levels was a specific request. We wanted absolutely breathtaking, all-round views of the sea that would lend the suite a magic touch. There are lots of Italian designer brands aboard because I like them and they influence my approach to design. I am deeply and constantly inspired by the beauty and art of your country, in fact. My favourite area is the “cinema room”, another special request, that is both large and cosy at once. I would describe Serenity as a “sensational” boat – luxurious but warm and full of life. She gives you an instant feeling of well-being and is somewhere guests will feel completely at ease, completely at home.

The Shipyard Roberto Zambrini, Ceo and cofounder Mondomarine

M

ondomarine’s new SF line is the result of a coincidence: a

lucky meeting with Luca Vallebona, a hugely talented young designer we’ll be hearing much more about in the future. He presented us with the concept for a 42-metre yacht that centred around complete privacy. We immediately went for it as we totally got its many fine features and appreciated its exclusive originality. Serenity is actually a particularly successful yacht because she combines the experience and reliability of a yard like Mondomarine with the freshness of a revolutionary new design that guarantees 100 per cent privacy via a series of incredibly innovative technical and stylistic solutions. Serenity’s layout is ideal for the US and Middle Eastern markets - the high temperatures and the fact they spend more time indoors than on deck. But we’ve already prepared a Mediterranean version with more balanced interior and exterior spaces. As with all our boats, the layout is moulded around the owner’s tastes and requirements, but that aside, what he appreciated most about Serenity was her large volumes and generous headroom (equivalent to those of a 50m), her silence, excellent seakeeping and exceptional quality. Be it in terms of finish, plant or engineering, the standard is always excellent because our philosophy is to only offer our clients the best. I believe this new line, which was very successful at Monte Carlo, is bang on trend. This no longer means racing along at 50 knots, burning tons of fuel, but making slow, but making purposeful progress on an environmentally-friendly semi-displacement or displacement yacht in generous, airy, light-filled spaces in utter comfort. Perfectly cocooned in your own private bubble.

BREAKING THE

He saw his chance and grabbed it with both hands with the winning entry to the 2015 Yacht Design Talent Award: a sporty 50-metre clothed in harmonious lines that pick out its details by Mary Hagerty

I

n response to the question “What does the number 42 mean to you?” in

a drafting class during his engineering degree studies, Detroit native Jeff Summers found himself sketching not a car but a 42’ motorboat. It was a pivotal moment. The 23-year-old quickly earned a reputation as the kid who always drew yachts regardless of his transportation engineering professor’s instructions. His big opportunity to finally give full vent to his passion came last year when he saw the call for entries to the 2015 Yacht Design Talent Award organised by Heesen Yachts, Superyacht Times and Sea Level Yacht Design & Engineering for students. The brief was for a new profile view of a 50m motor yacht, including a detailed sundeck. The talented young American was announced as the winner at the Monaco Yacht Show. “As someone who felt out of place being surrounded and taught by only automotive designers, I was extremely excited to finally meet yacht designers in that environment,” he told us, explaining that he’d spent his summers as a boy boating and watching the freighters on Lake St. Clair, Michigan.

The pilot station is protected by a hard top and a windshield, both ultra-minimalist but efficient. It is also slightly forward to underscore the cockpit and the fact that the transom is low and completely open to the sea. The below decks area has been crafted by the Architects GCA with the available space intelligently used in an open-plan layout. Also in there are a large berth in the vee of the bow, a head and a galley with microwave, fridge, sink and stove. Clever lighting and white upholstery create a chic contrast with the carbon-look furnishings. The result is both attractive and liveable.

ooking to have fun on a powered board while respecting both the environment and your mooring neighbours? Then the Lampuga

Boost is just what you’re looking for - a board with jet propulsion and a special electric motor that can push it to 54 km/h, allowing its makers to claim that it’s the highest-performance jetsurf on the market. The engine can generate 15 HP with no polluting emissions and without noise, but the board’s exciting performance is also down to its carbon fibre construction, offering a combination of light weight and sturdy build. The waterline and footboard design, enhanced by EVA inserts glued to the surface, make stunts a breeze, while the 51.8 volt/58.8 amp lithium ion battery provides a run time of between 20 and 40 minutes with a maximum range of 20 kilometres, depending on the demands made on it. The standard battery will recharge in 120 minutes, but this can be cut to 60 if buyers choose the faster battery charger offered as an option. The Lampuga Boost is also safe, as the motor and charger compartment is totally waterproof. A magnetic leash immediately cuts power to the engine if it becomes detached. Finding balance and trim during stunts is assisted by a board speed control system.

The maison is based in the French-influenced city of Geneva and is considered the most aristocratic brand in the entire watchmaking industry. Its output centres exclusively around classic models that embrace the entire spectrum of complications, from dual time zones to minutes repeaters and calendars of all kinds. But the first choice when it comes to its cases is always and ever warm gold, particularly of the yellow and rose varieties.

ith a limitless heritage of ideas, inspiration and trends drawn from far-off times and cultures, choosing only a few bracelets is a tough task - we went for the rigid designs, with clean, elegant lines and strictly in gold.

Spirals or bands, engraved with shapes with magical significance for the Mycenaeans, circles decorated with turquoise scarabs and mythological images for the Egyptians and Babylonians, and strung like beads for the Greeks. “Chimera” style, rigid, open, with the heads of fanciful creatures facing each other at the opening, embellished with ivory or coral for the Etruscans. Roman legionaries wore rigid gold on the upper arm bands, a snake coiled up on itself or “slave” style for women. The “boite à portrait” locket was a velvet ribbon with a cameo in the centre, popular after the 17th century, the typical period for enamels and miniatures, with gold filigree, charms, pendants and talismans between 1800 and the 1900s. The Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements inspired what may be the most original examples, with the creation of some of the most elegant pieces ever made. Nowadays bracelets are all this, and much more besides.

YAS M A R I N A

by Cristina Griner

Much more than a port, Yas Marina in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is the living, beating heart of an island that has it all: amenities, services, hospitality, sports, nature and entertainment. For a quick visit or a lifetime...

O

f the some 200 islands and islets that make up the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Yas Island probably

best epitomises the spirit of the place. It really does have it all on the leisure front: a motorsport circuit that hosts a Formula 1 grand prix with the iconic Viceroy Hotel right at its centre, Waterworld, home of the world’s longest water slide and three-metre waves, and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, an astonishing Prancing Horse theme park. Naturally enough, Yas Island also offers its visitors a wonderful beach, a Kyle Phillipsdesigned golf course and a designer shopping mall crammed with all the international luxury brands. At that heart of this little corner of paradise, however, is Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi’s answer to the classic yachting destinations of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. With over 200 berths, it provides both a permanent home for yachts of up to 90 metres in addition to dedicated docks and services for passing gigayachts of up 150 metres. The marina also encompasses the Viceroy Abu Dhabi, a futuristic designer resort that straddles both shore and sea with a spectacular steel and glass LED-strewn

canopy casting wonderful reflections on sky, desert and sea. Eight restaurants offer cuisines from Italian (Amici) to Japanese (Kazu), Middle Eastern (Atayeb) and Indian (Angar). There are even burlesque shows in one of the lounges at weekends. Yachting guests also enjoy VIP check-in and direct access to the Marina Tower and the ESPA wellness centre, home of the Viceroy Presidential Treatment Suite, which has its own amazing hammam and sauna. After a day spent lazing on Yas Beach or enjoying the adrenaline rush of the Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller-coaster, guests can retire to Cipriani for a Harry’s Bar-style dinner. Alternatively, they can make their way to Rozannah, a Lebanese restaurant headed by one of Beirut’s top chefs. For something lighter, there is the choice of the Spanish tapas bar or the Café d’Alsace. The Arena and du Forum are both excellent concert and live music venues too and night owls can dance the night away in the stunning 01NE.
