hat can we look forward to in 2017? For us at THE ONE Yacht & Design it’s the third year of a wonderful publishing experience. We’ll be presenting an exciting series of new yachts, intriguing design solutions and innovative interior and exterior layouts. But 2017 will also be an opportunity for us to consolidate our international presence and expand our global readership through a distribution plan that will take in the world’s most important private jet airports and yacht clubs. After the first four issues in 2015, each on based on the theme of a gem – ruby, emerald, sapphire and diamond – and the next four in 2016 on the theme of metals – gold, platinum, bronze and silver – this year’s magazines will draw inspiration from the semiprecious stones featured on their cover. The result is this Amber issue, to be followed by Turquoise, Jade and Amethyst. We have so much ground to cover, so many unique items to present, but we can rely on the competence and professionalism of our staff and contributors, and that touch of emotion that has always enabled us to stand out among other international magazines. A happy 2017 to you all - may it be filled with emotion and excitement!

[ AGAINST THE WIND ]
SAFETY BEFORE
THE WOW EFFECT by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder Floating Life
T
h e world has been hit by a long period of crisis that descended with the fury of a raging hurricane, and those winds have not yet died down. There has been some recovery in new construction but the trend is neither stable nor strong enough to allow the shipbuilding to industry to relax. Yards are looking for new products to offer but so far I haven’t seen anything of real interest. Designers are trying to create something innovative but in reality all that’s out there are revamps of old projects – and the changes aren’t always for the better. I know it’s hard to create something new, as so much research was done in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but I would expect new professionals to pull some exciting ideas out of the hat, especially with materials currently being developed and tested – that, at least, would add some interest and appeal to an industry that currently seems to be happy just marking time.
An increasing demand for greater personalisation could stimulate this renewal – there’s no shortage of off-the-wall requests! I remain extremely optimistic about young designers but I hope that instead of basing their efforts on attempts to amaze, they allow themselves to be driven by a love and respect for our seas. My son is studying nautical engineering, and I said to him, “Creating a design isn’t all that complicated... but not everyone can create a good design. Remember that going to sea is more dangerous than you could ever imagine, so every time you start a new build, think hard about the people who will be on board. They want to have fun, not risk their lives!” So get to it, you up-and-coming engineers and designers. Present new ideas and projects, but don’t give the “WOW” effect priority over safety.
And I hope that my words will not simply be carried away on the wind!

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]
NICOLA TYLER SINAGPORE YACHT SHOW SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR by Bianca Ascenti
The Singapore Yacht Show – held at the ONE°15 Marina Club – is Asia’s top boat show. Can you describe its business model? Our goal for the seventh show is to bring together the most prestigious local and international yachting brands for the Asian market, and to introduce a wide range of complementary accessories from supercars to watches, highend fashion, real estate, yacht toys and diving equipment. There is a relatively small number of yachts in Asia today, but that is a great opportunity: it is time for Asians to experience the thrill of owning a yacht or luxury boat. We now see four times as many visitors through our doors and our line-up has grown from just 12 boats to over 70. Which yachts are most popular with Asian clients? Catamarans have long been popular for their fantastic interior and exterior spaces. Many owners start with smaller vessels, so both production and mid-range boats are popular, but the SYS has something for everyone, from day boats to 60m superyachts. What percentage would be European-built? And Italian-built? 80 per cent of our exhibitors come from Europe. An impressive 32 per cent of these come from Italy:
12
Azimut, Ferretti, Monte Carlo Yachts, Riva, Cranchi, Benetti, Baglietto and Fincantieri. What about SYS 2017? It’s too early to predict yacht numbers, but there will be over 10 Asian premieres and debuts. Simpson Marine, one of the region’s leading dealers and one of our first exhibitors, will be giving the Bénéteau Oceanis Yacht 62 her Asian premiere. Boat Lagoon Yachting will host three Asian premieres too. Ferretti Yachts is presenting the Ferretti 700, the Ferretti 450 and the Pershing 5X to the Asian market, while Azimut Yachts is premiering the Azimut 95. Amels, Baglietto, Benetti, Feadship, Fincantieri, Heesen, Silveryachts, Westport and Lürssen will also be there. The SYS has a fantastic social calendar: so what are the must-attend events during the 2017 edition? We will shortly be announcing a wide range of exciting partnerships with new in-show dining options and even a beer garden. VIPs can socialise in the chic, redesigned VIP Lounge in the Pavilion or onboard the floating VIP Lounge. In addition to favourites such as the supercar parades, fashion shows and the on-water Demonstration Platform, there will be glamorous soirées on the yachts, in our exclusive Lounges and at our partner hotel, the W Singapore-Sentosa Cove.

ossinavi’s Attitude is a seductive Italian take on the classic lobster boat. A completely new concept for which Rossinavi
drew on the talents of legendary pen of arch. Carlo Colombo and the internationally-renowned A++ studio. Thanks to a high performance keel, a blunt plumb bow and imposing dark livery, Attitude is a truly stunningly-looking craft. Most importantly, however, it introduces a whole new way of living at sea that fully reflects what today’s owners want and need. Views from the interior are unobstructed and the sense of space and comfort is exceptional, creating immersive ambience. There is nothing flashy whatsoever about this elegantly sober yacht and yet its very simplicity is what impresses most and creates a powerful sense of quality. The al fresco living spaces are an impressive mix of innovative shapes and a thoughtfully-planned layout. The emphasis, of course, is on absolute quality and comfort. The owner in particular enjoys complete privacy. All in all, a craft that looks primed to raise the bar in the lobster boat sector.

the yacht the first in what will be a whole new explorer-type range called the Lounge collection which Couach says will span three models, but it also signals the start of a complete overhaul of the historic French yard’s entire range. The 38m Explorer is a real return to form for Couach and is absolutely perfect for adventure-loving owners with a penchant for made-to-measure everything – yachts included. It will have two interior decks and adopts a semi-displacement platform. There is a large sun deck behind the raised wheelhouse too, while the midships section of the main deck receives partial shade from the hard top – a great place to chill on hotter days. There will be a beach club on the transom and, of course, a large full-width master suite on the main deck with guests accommodated below. Couch also recently appointed a new CEO, Deputy General Manager, and Marketing and Communications Assistant to bring new momentum to both the sales and creative sides of the business.

The aft deck communicates with the main saloon despite being far more laidback and maritime in character. In fact, all the al fresco areas aboard the W 125 are super-casual and feature a palette that centres around greys and blues. The W 125 is a 38-metre that provides its occupants with very generous space thanks to the exceptionally creative use made of the generous beam along the entire hull length. The on-deck master suite forward spans 45 square metres and offers a king-size bed and his-and-hers bathrooms featuring nickelfinish Porta Romana Pendolina wall sconce lights, Lacava rectangular undermount sinks with polished nickel faucets and other bath accessories from Adina by Altman’s. There is a double his and hers closet. The spaciousness of the suite is entirely due to the fact that the full beam is used as the walkarounds hugging the main saloon meld into stairs at that level, leading up to a stunning open-air foredeck area with a large sun pad, two tables and a sofa. The three guest staterooms are situated on the lower deck but the fitness room can be converted to a fourth also. Needless to say, there is also a beach club aft. Once the 125 is at anchor, the platform can double in size thanks to an ingenious slide-out swimstep extention. A large curved stairs dominates the aft deck and leads to the flying bridge where a hard top provides shade and shelter forward, while a Jacuzzi and al fresco galley with a large natural stone work top lie aft. www.westportyachts.com

e just made the trip from Westport in Washington State to Florida, enjoying the West Coast along the
way. We plan on running down to the Caribbean this winter and possibly New England this summer. In my opinion the main characteristics of the new Westport 125’ start with the full-beam master stateroom. Then, the guests really enjoy the beach club, and with the Seakeepers installed for at-rest stabilisation, it makes for a comfortable time while at anchor. For me, it would have to be the integrated touchscreen bridge system provided by MT (Marine Technologies). I have been with the owner for about a year, starting on the 112’ Westport he owned and I was involved during the build of the new Westport 125. The owner had some special requests in the interior. There were not many changes requested, however. Westport has boatbuilding down and takes a lot of the guesswork out for owners and captains.

e received some input from the owner regarding selected surfaces and fabrics. This is a series boat.
However, it wasn’t restrictive so he had the opportunity to get what he wanted, but ended up with what we recommended, as the boat works. The main features and distinctive elements of the exterior of the Westport 125 are its timeless design, the beach club aft with sliding platform, integrated folding swim ladders, service bar and entertainment system which maximise versatility, the sun lounge and casual dining/entertaining area forward of pilothouse with sunshades, and the Cantilever deck with no support. As regards the interior of the yacht, it is surprisingly spacious, with a full-beam master with two heads, a versatile galley, a multi-level pilothouse and a spacious, open feel to the interior with oversized windows. The interior and exterior are not two separate “worlds: they are tied together by overhead features and lighting. We used stained sapele mahogany with details in onyx and stones. The attention to detail was meticulous, just look at the Turnstyle passage door handles and cabinet pulls with inlaid material to complement other interior details. The coffee table and end tables were custom-made from zebra wood. Natural and artificial light are crucial aboard any yacht. On the Westport 125, we decided on very large windows. The lighting is arranged to accentuate specific areas and is all LED. The main challenge we had with this new yacht was integrating it all together, and making it work.

he main characteristics and priorities of the new Westport 125 series are the walkarounds, the full-
beam master and the performance consistent with the rest of product line. The 112 is an incredibly successful boat but many customers welcomed an opportunity to move up. We took 2 and a half years from start of design to the first boat. Our main challenge onboard was making it all work together and reconciling conflicting requirements, but that is where we succeed. From a naval architect point of view, the main characteristics of the yacht are the running gear and hull form, which performs very well across a broad speed range. As we already said, the Westport 125 is our most advanced yacht. For example, onboard, we have advanced electronics, a flat glass bridge utilising an MT package proven by commercial ships, a Gyro Stabilizer, a hydraulic-to-electric system and a bow thruster. We incorporated computer flow analysis, struts, rudders, propellers and tunnels from our patrol boat. The owner of the Westport 125 n.1 is a repeat client. It is something we take great pride in – we have around 70 per cent repeat clients. And for the future, the shipyard is looking at several designs to expand our range offerings.

– the descendants of the Bugatti family from Milan have been known for a predisposition to art and flights of genius. Architect and sculptor Giovanni Bugatti was the first to display signs of this creative syndrome. He then passed his genius on to his son Carlo, a well-known interior and furniture designer with his “Fabbrica Mobili Artistici Fantasia” studio in Milan. The next beneficiaries of this artistic heritage were his two grandchildren. Rembrandt, a renowned sculptor and Art Deco pioneer, and Ettore, more sensible, practical, a dreamer who in the early 20th century decided to become an engineer after developing an intense fascination for the internal combustion-powered machines that seemed

personalised, innovative approach to styling, combined with advanced engineering solutions is the calling card of Malcolm McKeon Yacht
Design, a studio that, very aptly, overlooks the great cradle of yachting history, the Isle of Wight, around which the very first America’s Cup was raced. Although the studio itself is relatively new, Malcolm McKeon has been a design heavyweight for over three decades, having partnered the late great Ed Dubois, who passed away last year, for 31 years. The duo initially started out designing racing boats but McKeon later took charge of their superyacht design work. It is no great surprise therefore that his portfolio spans over 200 sailing and motoryachts, 50 of which are over 30 metres (100 feet) with the largest coming in at 66 metres. Perhaps the most spectacular craft Malcolm has been involved with, however, is the gorgeous 216foot Vitters sloop-rigged aluminium yacht, Aglaia. In 2102, McKeon parted ways with Dubois Naval Architects and struck out on his own in Lymington. “In the summer of 2016, we launched my first boat with my new company, a 33-metre all-carbon-fibre performance sloop. We also plan to launch a 32.5-metre carbon-fibre performance sloop at the beginning of 2017 for experienced Italian owners and Remi Tessier is doing the interior design. I also have three more projects signed up. Plus we are working on a 51-metre and a catamaran called Black Cat,” he says. McKeon’s

argherita Casprini grew up living and breathing architecture in her father’s studio so it came as no great surprise when she chose that profession for herself. After
teaching architecture for a while at La Spezia, however, she decided to branch out on her own to do, in her own words, what she “really wanted to do”. Her meeting with Francesco Paszkowski in 2006 was pivotal to the direction her career was to take. “I began doing interior work for Paszkowski - researching new materials, a fundamental component of any project. As time went on, the studio’s workload increased and I got involved in that. I learned to look on each project as a single entity, even though I continued working only on interiors under Francesco’s guidance”. That means décor, lighting, custom furniture and lighting feature designs, the complete fit-out right down to “things used aboard every day, such as tableware, towels, glasses, cushions, to ensure that even they were consistent with the overall design”. Gradually, Casprini’s work extended beyond the core business of Paszkowski studio in the nautical world. Homeware and residential work followed. “Aboard Papi du Papi, a 50-metre built by Isa in 2011, the décor centred around just two woods paired with glass and leather, materials that acted as a ‘container’ for the custom furnishings and personal items the owner wanted to have aboard. After that yacht, the owner also commissioned the studio to design his house. The approach was similar. In the case of the residence, we worked on architectural choices and space definition with screens used to create different ambiences without any clear separation between the spaces. As happened aboard, light plays an important role and is used to enhance the whole light/shadow contrast created by the materials”.
70
Decor, lighting and custom furnishing and accessories design. The project is a single entity underpinned by a philosophy of consistency. Right, the original stone hand basin designed for the 49.95m Papi du Papi by ISA. After they’d worked on this yacht, the owner commissioned Paskowski and Casprini to design his home too. Bottom left, the lounge where screens and furnishings are used to delineate the various spaces
Once again, the furnishings designed for the exterior “are reminiscent of the shapes of the interior pieces to ensure a sense of design consistency, just as would be the case aboard yachts on which we do interior and exteriors”. Casprini is supported in her endeavours by the studio’s international staff. “It’s stimulating to work in such a diverse environment and I know I’m very lucky because I’ve had the opportunity to do what I love. Contact with the client and production control are essential in obtaining a harmonious, balanced result regardless of whether the owner’s tastes lean towards the classic, contemporary or minimalist. It can be challenging but it’s essential. Since I have been working with Paszkowski, who has vast experience, I’ve tried not just to put forward my own ideas but also to learn from his skills. I have realised that listening and watching are vital to ensuring that a design will fulfill the client’s wishes. So we have a constructive daily review, something that’s particularly important when you’re starting from different positions”. Margherita Casprini still continues to collaborate with the Paszkowski studio on nautical and residential projects alike. However, it wouldn’t come as a great surprise to us if, one day, the studio created a new division to develop designer products for other sectors besides.

ast when needed, yet always comfortable and welcoming for the guests, she is built to last. That’s the concept behind Dahlak.
Thanks to her plumb bow and smooth slope aft, she exhibits a long, streamlined waterline length, which, combined with her moderate displacement, delivers a sporty elegance. The high-efficiency, deep-draft lifting keel and rudder give the helmsman plenty of control in tight upwind work, as well as in high-speed, broad-reaching conditions. Dahlak is equipped with the latest generation of fully automated electric captive winches, engineered in-house at Perini Navi. This not only leaves the deck and cockpit unobstructed by sheets and running rigging for enhanced aesthetics, but also improves the safely for guests and crew. A further technological development is the ‘Silent Night’ lithium polymer battery system which ensures Dahlak runs quietly, while taking advantage of the latest environmental advances. There is no doubt that, for many years to come, Dahlak will provide her owners with a superb platform for worldwide cruising with family and friends as well as exciting and competitive team racing. She is a technological masterpiece, on which future yachts will be modelled.

he owner wanted a sporty, high-performance boat that would still be family-friendly – he wanted to be able to sail
around the world in complete safety. Dahlak’s owner wanted her to have a more automated sail system than her sister ship, P2. In terms of her interior layout, however, only the crew quarters were modified and that was to make the service more efficient. The interiors were designed by Perini Navi’s own architects in consultation with the owner. They feature numerous custom-designed touches. Most of the textiles used are by Loro Piana and Zimmer+Rohde, while marble, leather and teak are the main materials. The sailing system can be controlled by just one person – in fact, that’s the main feature of the yacht. New winches with innovative technical and control features were also developed specifically for Dahlak.
81
The Shipyard Burak Akgül, Managing Director Sales & Marketing
D
ahlak is the second vessel in the 38-metre series and was launched to deliver something different
and unexpected for a Perini: a performance cruiser. Dahlak is the opposite of the first example, P2, which was designed to be as much of a racer as possible. She’s a cruising yacht with as much racer-style performance as possible. The owner is a hugely enthusiastic sailor and not only loves sailing the boat himself but also wants to know every single aspect of her. He was closely involved in the project and we minutely examined every single detail to ensure she was tailored exactly to his wishes. Dahlak also has a different sail plan from P2. She has a furling boom for a start, but the most important novelty is her innovative control system, which is in line with most modern systems that the company has at its disposal right now. The new-generation type of winch used is the same as that aboard the 60-metre due to splash next summer. Just a single joystick synchronises the work of the three winches and the mainsail can also be controlled. This is another step in the direction of Perini’s main design criterion: making life simple for whoever is at the helm. Dahlak showcases the very pinnacle of our proprietary sail control technology. She was also first of our yachts to supply electrical power via a DC bus to her main electrical grid and the latter also sends excess power to her lithium polymer batteries for storage. This system was developed at the owner’s request as he wanted to be able to turn off the generator at night and it has also been used aboard the 70-metre Perini Navi Sybaris. It was a whole new technological challenge for us but now the generator can be shut down for six to eight hours aboard Dahlak (when the galley is not in use) and, most importantly of all, that includes when she is underway.
82
One of the most important instructions Perini Navi received from the owner was to simplify the actual sailing of the yacht as much as possible. The resulting three semi-automatic electric captive winches designed by the yard are the pinnacle of its proprietary sail control technology. A single joystick synchronises the work of all three, yet the mainsail can also be trimmed at the same time

of Design Miami Basel, which took place last December in Florida, to be followed by the spring events in Dubai. But first things first - the 12th Design Miami show, which attracted more than 37,900 visitors, saw the participation of 31 super galleries (with just one Italian, Erastudio Apartment-Gallery). The Design Satellites and exhibitions in the Curio section hosted at the show presented collectible design objects in a mix of contemporary and vintage offers, and proved to be very popular. The catalogue of intriguing pieces included a porcelain interpretation in the Satellites section of Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog by French manufacturer Bernardaud. Then we exchange the sunshine of Miami for the desert heat of Dubai with Design Days Dubai, from 14 to 17 March, and Art Dubai from 15 to 18. The two fairs, with their events and new now the most important art and design platforms for the Middle East, Africa and Asia. This year’s Design Days Dubai will be in full bloom in the new Design District, inspired by its counterpart in Miami, and its promoters see it developing as a rival to London and New York – and that seems to be a realistic ambition. It will be both a business park and a place to live and work. Untitled Homeware brings contemporary style to home dining, with tableware that is refined yet suitable for every occasion and speaks the language of design by Marta Bernasconi
he collaboration between the Hungarian porcelain brand Herend and architect and designer Massimiliano Locatelli began in 2010. A union of different histories and skills, backed by a shared vision - to reinterpret and offer new life to the table set-ting with an innovative impulse and ideas that give a cutting edge appeal to hand-painted table porcelain. Five years later, Locatelli has fully realised his vision, creating his own tableware collection called Untitled Homeware. For the production of his handmade objects, Locatelli has turned to the excellence of Italian manufacture, as well as some Far Eastern companies for specific tasks. The name also reflects the brand’s philosophy, as it does not identify with a particu-lar style or orientation. The Untitled Homeware table embodies the tradition of colour and decoration while being totally at ease in modern surroundings. The collec-tion is based on a concept of relaxed elegance, creating new combinations, mixing pieces from periods and expressing different styles. The result is a series of objects in constant evolution. Starting from a few basic pieces, it can be reinterpreted day by day, while including older designs like traditional Herend porcelain

This means that allowing users the final say in furnishing arrange-ments and table settings is a modern idea, one that adds a precious touch to interi-ors, inspired by a truly exclusive factor - personalisation. The Untitled Homeware luxury collection also includes elements that help define the character of the domestic space, and not just the living areas, with large and small tables, bookcases and sofas, all designed with flexibility in mind, intended for interiors with a variety of functions. The concept is by Massimiliano Locatelli and the message is once again that of the Homeware collection - research, originality and the freedom to compose according to your tastes. www.untitledhomeware.com

n all-consuming love has just the right balance of sweetness and tension: a spark of passion that makes it all the more compelling. Just like the soul of no. 17145 from Heesen Yachts, which, very fittingly, has been named Amore Mio (My Beloved). The Omega Architects-designed Amore Mio actually started life as an on-spec craft. A year into her build, however, her clever mix of sporty aggression and sweet curves won her the heart of a serial owner who then had her tailored to his own tastes. The owner was instantly taken with her eager, forward-leaning stance while her huge amount of deck space reflected his ambition to use his yacht as a seaborne beach house. Of the yacht’s 45 metres, a good 30 are given over to the interiors, in fact. Guests also have 40 square metres of deck space, including an additional seating area on the foredeck plus sun beds, an exceptional achievement on a craft of this size. There is also an 18 metres long sundeck with a full-size dining table and a total of 90 square metres of relaxation space. Long-time Heesen collaborator Cristiano Gatto was entrusted with the design of the interiors and his meticulous planning during development helped avoid technical and budget issues at the outfitting stage. In fact, the concept was developed with Heesen and later

more Mio was designed as a fast sports yacht that does not compromise on luxury or sea-keeping qualities in any way. The client’s main wish
was for a luxurious two- and-a-half deck with a traditional chined semi-planing hull, and we started our design from there. Amore Mio was evolved on foot of the success of the 37m platforms. She displays some of the ‘Nova’ language already, such as sharper and more edgy surfaces for her superstructure combined with her ‘knuckle’ bow. She is also a slightly forward-leaning vessel and aims to be a combination of elegance and aggression. This starts from her new bow, which is an evolution of the 42m Alive’s bow, which had a knuckle just over the waterline. For the core of the Heesen portfolio, we decided to stay with a bow shape close to the traditional ‘raked’ bow. This knuckle is just a slight variation on it. It wasn’t a request: we always develop our proposals and in a sort of iteration process. Amore Mio introduces a whole new language – she aims to be gracious but show a bit of aggression at the same time. However, I think it would be inappropriate to show too much aggression in designs in a period of global turmoil. It is better to please the eye in a traditional way when so many areas of the world are unstable. The new language is continued in the design of the three wheelhouse windows. These maximise visibility from the wheelhouse (note the separation of the wheelhouse roof, which reflects the separate position of the wheelhouse). The owner wanted an extra window in the wing which supports the mast. This was how we made it possible to have both the view and wind protection on the sundeck at the same time. Amore Mio represents a new direction for Heesen.
Two preliminary sketches of Amore Mio. Right, the glass windows of the wheelhouse curve upwards to the flybridge - an absolutely unprecedented achievement. more Mio’s owners were already clients of Heesen Shipyards. In fact, the owners were due to take delivery of the 40m Heesen Galatea, when an offer came in that
was too good to refuse. They sold the 40m, but then found themselves in the frustrating position of being without a boat. Fortunately, Amore Mio was one year into her build and they decided to upgrade to the 45m. The yacht was built on spec but they still were able to give their input. A year in is a great stage to come into a spec build, because you can save all the time it takes for the rough construction, as long as you like the general layout—and the owners loved it. It was an ideal time to put a personal stamp on the yacht while not having to wait too long to enjoy her. They were looking for a yacht with high-performance, long-range capabilities, bold exterior lines and a layout that put a priority on outdoor living. The latter was particularly important for the owners, who were looking for a summer house on the sea to be enjoyed by all the family. They choose Heesen Yachts because they are famous for their fast aluminium boats. There is not another shipyard that delivers yachts of their quality with those characteristics!

The Interior Designer Cristiano Gatto
T
o cut a long story short, the brief was to design a yacht my own way! I was very glad to work with this client. Good coordination and understanding
between the owner and our team was the key to the success of this project. Working in close collaboration with Omega Architects, who did the concept and exterior design, we implemented a highly functional layout which exploits volumes and spaces to the last centimetre. For example, by creating a smaller lobby on the lower deck, we were able to redistribute 6.5 sqm equally between the guest cabins, resulting in more liveable and comfortable night quarters. Careful thought went into the location of stairs both for guests and crew too, allowing the designers to dedicate more space to the galley on the main deck. The whole project is underpinned by stylistic consistency. The owner really liked our design approach. He wanted an elegant yacht that wasn’t overly formal. The interior design was a team project. My design was adapted on certain levels to suit the owner’s requirements. We chose relaxing, neutral colours. A few splashes of strong colour here and there lift the look without altering its overall sobriety. Once again, this was a team effort. Light plays a pivotal role: a non-invasive lighting system creates a relaxing atmosphere. Then, if you use lights around the edges of the ceilings, on some of the wall panels or at the base of furnishings, it becomes a décor element in its own right. Another instance is how the steps on the guest stair seem to float on light at night. We also played with the architecture a bit. We put the stairwell between the upper and lower decks, for instance, actually inside the saloon. The stairs themselves are hidden behind a screen made from satin-finish glass and vertical steel elements, so only the outline of the person going up or down the steps can be seen. Every design is a piece of my own history and that of the studio, and each one teaches something new. Amore Mio was hugely satisfying for all of us.
Cristiano Gatto designed all of Amore Mio’s interiors, from the larger furnishings right down to the tiniest details. “Colder” materials were treated to lend them a more pleasant, comforting look and feel. Slender steel orthogonal edging also further enhances the softness of both forms and materials

more Mio is the largest and most powerful sports yacht ever built in the Netherlands. This is another important milestone in the history of
our shipyard. During sea trials, her sleek 45m aluminium hull, powered by two MTU 16V diesel engines, sliced through the North Sea at a thundering top speed of 30 knots, with no compromising on luxury! Amore Mio is the result of a long-term collaboration with Frank Laupman, the author of many Heesen Yachts, and Cristiano Gatto and his team, who designed the interior. We like Cristiano’s style and his way of working which perfectly complement our hunger for perfection. This is the third project the Italian designer has developed for the Dutch shipyard, (the other two being the 50m full-custom Crazy Me and the 50m semidisplacement yacht My Loyalty, aka Project Akoya). Meant for extended cruising, the 45m was designed to be contemporary but without cold, impersonal modern interiors. Besides the cohesiveness of the overall design, a close look reveals a layer of architectural detailing perfectly executed by the skilled craftsmen at Heesen Yachts Interiors, our own fine-interior carpentry shop. We want the owner to discover the quality of design living onboard. Fast, sporty and aluminium-built, she embodies Heesen’s DNA. She is cool, sexy and fast!

Dutch designer’s website. But this is no ordinary world because the 53-yearold’s mission is not simply to create beautiful things but “an environment of love, to live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true”. This is a man with a strong message for humanity, in other words: a message of hope and enthusiasm. After graduating cum laude from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem and then pursuing further studies at the Eindhoven Design Academy, Wanders opened his own studio in Amsterdam in 1995. Success soon followed. Just one year later in 1996, he wowed the international design scene by producing the iconic Knotted Chair, which paired high-tech materials with low-tech production methods. Wanders remains a prolific product, interior designer, and art director. His output has spanned projects for over 1,700 high-profile international private and corporate clients including the illustrious likes of Alessi, Baccarat, Bisazza, Louis Vuitton, Flos, Swarovski and Puma.

Although sometimes controversial in nature, Wanders’ work defies design dogma, honing in instead on holistic answers, constantly surprising with its ingenuity, courage and ambition to entertain and lift the human spirit. During Milan Design Week, his space on Via Savona positively zings with energy and creativity. Moooi sofas, chairs and rugs aren’t just displayed but are arranged as a stage set of sorts, the theatrical backdrop to a performance visitors suddenly find themselves part of. The result is startling and transformative. For the last Design Week, for example, Wanders turned his 1,700 square metre space into a thrillingly creative, rebellious universe with a harmony all of its own. New pieces were arranged in dramatic, artful clusters on various podia inside a darkly mysterious ballroom off which side corridors lead to 14 elegant home settings designed to embody the rebellious spirit of today’s creative community. This wonderfully surreal world was completed by 22 new Signature Carpets from the Moooi collection as well as stunning oversized prints by British photographer Rebecca Bathory. The Dutch designer explains the philosphy that has always driven him both in life and throughout his career: “My goal is to contribute to making life more beautiful.

t all started with the stern of what in 2011 was known as the Mondo Marine M50 concept, a semi-planing aluminium yacht with very large exterior spaces and a low, tapering silhouette. The forward-raked stern lends the yacht character and gives the design a timeless yet sporty feel. Initially, there was to be a closed stern with beach house but in the end the owner opted for a garage for the 8.2-metre tender but that didn’t impinge on the aesthetic at all. The windows add a sense of aerodynamic dynamism, creating a sporty look that the red livery accentuates. The sections are not visually united vertically and in the hard top, black helps enhance that feeling of visual lightness. The aft stairs are open and angled, particularly the first three steps which are broader and taller (typical of an Art Nouveau garden). There are numerous car design references and all the various areas of the hull have their own “expression”: aft, the fairleads look like the yacht’s eyes, for example. We like to think that every deck is anthropomorphic and that every part of the yacht has its own emotional impact. The exteriors are generous and cleverly distributed to ensure that 100 per cent use is made of the boat. Forward of the windshield there is a large al fresco lounge, while three jet skis are stowed aft on the upper deck. The huge space forward on the sun deck devoted to the infinity pool is very impressive. The client was delighted because we managed to give him the boat of his dreams and that is a source of enormous satisfaction to us. Let me tell you a funny story: at our first meeting, he asked us to change the window in the master suite. He wanted us to take our inspiration from another design. Normally, designers are not keen to do that kind of thing. Nonetheless, in this instance, there were no particular problems as the window the owner wanted us to draw on was from another concept that Hot Lab had designed.
Hot Lab has designed a sporty, timeless-looking yacht. Photos left, from top, the studio’s three partners Michele Dragoni, Enrico Lumini and Antonio Romano. A raked bow and stern lend an extra edge of aggression. The design sketches are of the sun deck

n a yacht like Ipanema, the interior design goes well beyond mere aesthetic impact. It’s about the ability to get it spot on and make the client happy with a result that exceeds their expectations, and do so in a very short space of time. We were extremely impressed by the yard’s skill and professionalism. We had an absolutely harmonious working relationship with it and its extraordinary craftsmen. Ipanema’s interiors weren’t simple logistically because we had to source, work with and match so many different materials. But from a design perspective, it was hugely stimulating because it demanded a
long research phase. But then the owner approved the project after just two meetings and without making any further modifications. Ipanema is the very quintessence of Mondomarine’s production philosophy and is a perfect example of 100 per cent customisation. Nothing aboard can be found on the market. Everything, from the wainscoting to the carpeting, was bespoke designed and made. That includes the door handles, the light switches, sockets which are made from painted ceramic. There are many classical and neo-classical elements aboard and there is a sense of extreme decorativeness everywhere. All of the cabins feature innumerable patterns, be they upholstery, curtains, loose furnishings and carpets, each of the latter is custom designed with a pattern and woven from wool and silk. Each composition features four to eight colours with different knot heights creating a stunning three-dimensional effect. “No monotony, no repetition, no understatement” was the order of the day. If a designer’s job isn’t to impose his or her own vision but to interpret the client’s dreams while translating them into a coherent, ergonomic and safe design, then we did our job. The register aboard changes constantly so that the owner will feel that everything around him belongs to him alone and won’t be seen on any other craft.

panema is inspired by M50, which HotLab created for us along with a 43m and 60m. She epitomises the Mondomarine production philosophy as she is crafted entirely around her owner’s wishes. The client wanted something truly unique and made-to-measure. We were able to customise the yacht from the tiniest detail to her scarlet hull. The client was captivated by our sporty yet timeless lines and also by the guarantee of complete customisation in addition to the superb quality of our workmanship and naval architecture. Mondomarine also guarantees a level of comfort that well exceeds industry standards combined with a lightweight but tough construction. I believe Ipanema is a successful yacht on all levels: her design is modern but not extreme, her interiors are both impeccably finished and very comfortable. Last but not least, her livery won’t go unremarked. Ipanema’s owner was quite demanding but that’s what we like: challenges that will result in products that impress and
exceed clients’ expectations. While it is true the interiors are quite unusual, it is equally the case that the construction quality is stunning. Ipanema is the fourth aluminium 50m built by Mondomarine. We’d be delighted to build a larger sister for her and I believe that there will be some excellent opportunities in the near future. With regard to 2017, we’ll be delivering our flagship, the Luca Dini-designed 60m Sarastar and a 40m explorer by Sergio Cutolo. We’re also in negotiations for several other craft, particularly for a 50m with a GT of over 500, where we are at a very advanced stage.
The stern with its two open side staircases makes an impressive sight. A closed stern with beach house was the initial plan but the owner preferred to have a garage capable of stowing a proper 8.2-metre powerboat

terms of colours (light, dark, reddish), grain, etc. An incredible array that Cadorin pushes even further by offering myriad personalisations and artisanal finishes that make them fit each environment like a glove. Having begun life as a carpentry workshop founded by Giosuè Cadorin over a century ago, the Veneto company was developed and expanded by the latter’s son Delfino and his grandchildren Claudio and Rita. The latter is now head of marketing and development at the Cadorin Group and talked us through the company’s Yacht Planking range which has become a mainstay for many international and Italian yards. “We began producing three- and then two-layer solid wood planks in the late 1980s,” explains Cadorin. “We then started specialising in surface personalisation, by increasing the various finishes and crafting methods, some of which we’ve patented. Various different design and architecture studios then hit upon our collections for their yacht projects and that’s how we got involved in the nautical sector”. Design professionals appreciate the family-run company’s exclusive aesthetic, technical quality, production flexibility and flair for new projects. “What makes Cadorin so different is that although we have a 15,000 m2 production facility, it is managed like an artisanal set-up. The structural work is done to absolute technical perfection but the surface finish is done and will continue to be done manually. This is because only a craftsperson’s hand can give that aesthetic touch that architects are looking for. The many different finishes available across all our collections are also available for the Yacht Planks. The tones and colour layering are hugely sophisticated and popular with our clients. Even the new “bark”-look finishes are a major aesthetic evolution as they simulate natural tree bark itself. The technical structural side is no less important: we’ve developed a lightweight layered plank for naval use”. All of Cadorin’s yachting work is bespoke: dimensions, thicknesses and weights are central to each project. Customised surface finishes then add the final touch to ensure that the flooring is the perfect complement to the rest of the décor and furnishings. One of Cadorin’s most original new collections is Traces Planks, for

When she was finishing her Master’s degree in Gdansk University of Technology, she was looking around for an unusual subject for her thesis and finally decided on a superyacht. A move to Switzerland for a job in architecture resulted in a yearlong hiatus from her Masters. However, there was no going back: Ratajska had fallen in hopelessly in love with yacht design. Before delivering her thesis, she entered the Showboats Design Awards sponsored by Lürssen. nflatable yacht toys are bang on trend right now but owners and captains alike are demanding more than just the usual complement of
waterslides for their increasingly sophisticated craft. FunAir has stepped up to the plate with a new-generation range launched at the recent Monaco Yacht Show where many of the products were also showcased aboard the Ocea Nemo yacht. Yacht Joust, for example, providee endless family-friendly fun and comprises two very light batons with easy-grip handles ideal for both kids and adults. FunAir’s Yacht Golf too has evolved over the last season into a flexible, realistic multi-green system. It is available in sets of three to allow 9 or 18-hole courses to be set up at sea with netting to catch the balls on each green. Other products include climbing walls, personal watercraft docks, stand-up paddle boards and the Glacier Extreme. FunAir works directly with owner representatives at the likes of Feadship, Princess Yachts, Oceanco and Lürssen during the new build process to ensure toys are stored and deployed in the most efficient locations on board. Distribution centres in Europe, America, Australia and the East mean it can quick-ship products for existing yachts in just 72 hours too. www.funair.com

he oldest amber is 320 million years old, the youngest only 100 million, so it’s only natural that all the wisdom of the Earth is enclosed inside it. Perhaps that’s why for many centuries it has always been one of the fossils (and it is a fossil,
not a stone as it is sometimes mistakenly described) that captures our attention, and it is perhaps the only one to have entered the world of fashion. Its story is as seductive as its warm, ochre colour. In fact, it begins life as conifer resin, and, as time passes, it gradually solidifies and is transformed into a fossil. Sometimes plant matter or even animals remain suspended

lthough very far from elitist and pretty relaxed when it comes to etiquette, the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano is one of the
world’s most renowned yacht clubs, enjoying a reputation as a forger of “real” sailors (as befits its Trieste home) and the organiser of the legendary Barcolana, the world’s largest and most famous regatta for attracting 2,000 boats to the Gulf of Trieste on the second Sunday in October every year. It all began in 1968 when a group of seasoned sailors well used to grappling with all kinds of seas and weather, the razor-sharp Bora wind included, decided to set up a small but very active club and run a special kind of regatta. The following year they ran the latter for the first time and opened it to the entire city, inviting anyone who wanted to enter in any kind of boat they wished. But when the SVBG asked the Italian Sailing Federation, FIV, to add their event to its calendar, all of the slots had already been filled, so it was decided to put it in at the very end of the season as the final event of the year. This produced the famous “Autumn Cup”, now better known quite simply as the Barcolana. These days the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano is based in a two-storey building overlooking the stunning Gulf of Trieste with its own bar, restaurant, Pino Prinz sailing school lecture hall, and a meeting room as well as showers and changing
