editorial Ho vissuto 10 anni a Cortina: elementari, medie, liceo. A distanza di 30 anni, quando torno qui, mi capita ancora di dire “vado a casa”. Credo che solo chi ha vissuto un’esperienza simile, possa capire… Perché Cortina ha qualcosa di magico, qualcosa di intatto e puro, che davvero fa desiderare ogni ritorno, ed è una sensazione che non ho mai avvertito in nessun altro rinomato luogo di montagna. Sarà il paesaggio unico, preservato grazie anche a sessant’anni di immobilismo edilizio, che ha evitato scempi paesaggistici come quelli che fioriscono in blasonate località d’oltralpe. Poter raccontare la mia Cortina, attraverso le pagine di di Wonder Cortina e tramite gli eventi che realizzeremo, è un vero privilegio. E dopo tanti anni Cortina riesce ancora a stupirmi, anche d’estate. Si fanno passeggiate a piedi, in bicicletta o a cavallo. Si percorrono le vie ferrate, si “attraversano” cascate, si pernotta nei rifugi e si aspetta l’alba in cima alle Tofane. E se la natura è in fermento lo sono anche le attività mondane e culturali della Cortina d’estate. Dalla Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti al grande tennis internazionale, dal Golf in città agli eventi legati alla cultura. Ci saranno “montagne di libri” e autori, mostre, musica, cibo e altro ancora. Seguitemi, alla scoperta di questo luogo incantato. For ten years I lived in Cortina where I attended primary, middle and secondary schools. Now thirty years later when I come back, I still say, “I’m coming home.” I think that only those who have lived a similar experience can understand the feeling... Because Cortina has something magical, something that is intact and pure that makes you truly desire every return; and that is a sensation that I have never felt in any other well-known mountain locality. It might be the unique landscape that has been preserved thanks to a construction stasis lasting some 60 years that has thus avoided the devastation of landscape that has occurred in highly-praised towns on the other side of the Alps. It is a delight and a privilege for me to narrate my Cortina through the pages of Wonder Cortina and through the events we will promote. And even after so many years Cortina still manages to amaze me, even in the summertime. As it comes alive after winter, the season shows off its green splendor. And while nature is bestirring itself, the same can be said for Cortina’s summertime high society and cultural life: from the Dolomite Gold Cup car race to the international tennis tournament, from golfing in town to all the cultural events. “Mountains of Books” will bring writers, exhibitions, music, fine food and even more.

L’

innamoramento di Gherardo Manaigo per Cortina è un fattore genetico. Figlio dei proprietari del leggendario Hotel de la Poste e Presidente dell’Associazione Albergatori di Cortina, ci racconta cosa non perdersi durante la stagione estiva. “Cortina è magnifica sempre, ma in estate la bellezza delle Dolomiti è abbagliante. Le giornate sono lunghissime e il miglior modo per iniziarle è salire in Tofana con la funivia Freccia del cielo prima dell’alba per guardare il sorgere del sole a 3243 metri. È uno spettacolo indimenticabile e quando il cielo è limpido si vedono persino le cupole della Basilica di San Marco. Dopo la colazione in rifugio, si scende e non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta tra mille attività. Dalle camminate sul tracciato della vecchia ferrovia alle spericolate discese in downhill bike, dalle passeggiate a cavallo alle escursioni con guida nel Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti per l’osservazione di caprioli, cervi e camosci. Cortina è anche cultura, e il polo museale delle Regole Paleontologico, Etnografico e Arte Moderna - è per noi una grande fonte d’orgoglio. Così come la kermesse Una montagna di libri che promuove autori internazionali oltre ad artisti e artigiani ampezzani che incantano con i loro lavori. Incanto che si ripete anche di notte all’Osservatorio Astronomico del Col Drusciè. Sotto una cupola naturale a 1780 metri di altezza, pare di toccare con un dito luna, pianeti, stelle doppie, nebulose e galassie. Tutto questo è la magia di Cortina”.

Son of the owners of the legendary Hotel de la Poste as well as President of the Association of Cortina Hoteliers, he tells us what we mustn’t miss during the summer season. “Cortina is magnificent in every season but in summertime the beauty of the Dolomites is truly dazzling. The days are long and the best way to start them off is to go up Tofana with the Freccia del Cielo lift before dawn to watch the sunrise at 10,600 feet. It’s a sight you’ll never forget and when the sky is crystal clear you can even see the domes of Venice’s Cathedral of San Marco. Afterwards you can breakfast at the mountaintop hut before heading to down to the valley where it is hard to choose among the endless number of activities. From walking along the former railway bed to ripping rides on a downhill bike, from horseback outings to guided walks in the Natural Park of the Dolomites to observe wild mountain goats, deer and chamois. Cortina is also a place of culture and the Delle Regole museum system composed of Palaeontology, Ethnography and Modern Art museums is a source of great pride for us. As is the event Una montagna di libri (A Mountain of Books) which promotes international authors as well as Cortina’s own artists and craftsmen who create enchanting work. This enchantment is repeated during night-time sessions at the Astronomic Observatory in Col Drusciè where, under a natural dome located at 5,800 feet above sea level, you feel like you can touch moon, planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies with your fingertips. Nuota nelle verdi acque del lago Santa Caterina di Auronzo di Cadore, sali in sella e pedala verso la lunga ascesa al Passo Tre Croci fino al lago di Misurina, sotto alle maestose Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Lanciati in discesa per gli ultimi chilometri fino a Cortina, dove inizierai a correre tra i continui sali e scendi, tra prati e boschi ai piedi delle Tofane. E infine gli ultimi metri, verso l’arrivo, nel cuore della perla delle Dolomiti, in Corso Italia, per un grande e meritato applauso del pubblico Swim in the green waters of Santa Caterina Lake in Auronzo di Cadore, hop on your bike and pedal towards the long climb to the Passo Tre Croci as far as Lake Misurina, under the three majestic peaks of Lavaredo. Then go ripping downhill over the last kilometres till you reach Cortina where you will run up and down, though fields and woods at the foot of the Tofana mountains. And finally in the last metres of the race, as you enter the heart of the Dolomites, receive your loud and well-deserved applause as you run down Corso Italia

appuntamento, nato da un’idea di Events, è una sorta di celebrazione dei fasti della Cortina bon vivent, e anche quest’anno coinvolgerà invitati super selezionati. A fine agosto (anche la data è in embargo) sui prati di Malga Peziè de Parù, saranno allestiti una ventina di gazebo con le delizie dei migliori chef della zona, accompagnate da vini eccellenti. Un’atmosfera volutamente understatement, come è nello spirito cortinese, che mette insieme meraviglie del territorio di vario genere: da quelle naturali alle enogastronomiche. Si accede solo con invito cartaceo e come conviene agli eventi social-charity la quota di partecipazione simbolica verrà interamente devoluta a… Anche qui embargo, gli organizzatori stanno ancora lavorando per identificare “il meritevole” dell’anno. Unico indizio: un cortinese doc.

La casa attuale, a quota 2405 metri nella Forcella di Toblìn, fu ricostruita dal C.A.I. nel 1935 e dispone di 140 posti letto, “agibili” da giugno a fine settembre RIFUGIO LOCATELLI. Surrounded by the imposing 3 Cime and by Mount Paterno, this mountain hut has been providing a safe haven since the late 19th century. The current building, standing at almost 7900 feet in the Forcella di Toblin, was constructed by the Italian Alpine Club in 1935. It sleeps 140 people and its facilities are “practicable” from June to September

al 26 luglio al 3 agosto alcuni tra i migliori giocatori del mondo si sfideranno sui nuovi campi in terra rossa del Tennis Country Club Cortina che ospiterà, per la prima volta, un Torneo del Circuito Mondiale ATP Challenger. Il grande tennis internazionale arriva sulle Dolomiti grazie ad Andrea Mantegazza e al Presidente Paola Bergamo, e per dieci giorni il bel circolo contornato dalle Dolomiti d’Ampezzo sarà teatro per giocatori, pubblico internazionale e stampa. Ai Challenger partecipano giocatori provenienti da tutto il mondo: Cina, Giappone, Sud America, Europa dell’Est, America, Australia. 32 i nomi: 20 scelti in base alla classifica mondiale, 8 dalle qualificazioni del 26 e 27 luglio e 4 wild card (un invito che gli organizzatori danno alle giovani promesse o a qualche top player che all’ultimo decide di giocare il torneo). 16, invece, le coppie nel doppio. rom July 26th to August 3rd , for the first time the Country Tennis Club Cortina will host a tournament of the ATP Challenger World Circuit with a jackpot amounting to fifty thousand dollars. Great tennis is coming to the Dolomites and for ten days the Club will be all abuzz as it makes room for players, international spectators and press. The Challenger Tournament is for professionals placed from 30 to 200 in the world rankings. So you can expect to see well-known players looking for points to stay in the top echelons of world tennis as well as rising young talent. The competition chart calls for 32 players: 20 chosen from the world rankings, 8 from the qualification rounds that will be played on July 26th and 27th plus 4 wild cards (an invitation extended to young promising players or top players who decide to participate at the last minute). For the doubles matches sixteen teams will compete. In beautiful Cortina dressed for the summertime, this event of sport and high society should not be missed.

pira un vento nuovo, frizzante e puro, sulla bella Cortina. Fermo restando il fascino dello chalet rustic-chic, tutto legno e camini e corna di cervo, si avverte un nuovo movimento architettonico, più leggero, meno stereotipato. Exterior e interior. È un’idea di design che arriva da nord, e che qui ha il volto e l’anima di Enrico Franzolini, architetto purista molto vicino al fare di Alvar Aalto, stella nel firmamento dei grandi architetti finlandesi. Franzolini ha firmato una casa a Crignes, poco fuori Cortina: un grande appartamento che consente la convivenza, divisa e al contempo unita, di genitori e figli. 280 metri quadrati di luce, di materie naturali, di linee rigorose e lievi, che rimandano a nord. Le due situazioni distinte ma comunicanti, ricordano foreste e spazi dove

Here the anomaly has become an added value and it catalyses attention; it becomes the living room’s centre around which sofas, chairs and tables are arranged. By contrast the “children’s house” has a lighter, fresher touch and light is distributed by means of light-coloured and soft materials like brushed larch wood employed for the floors, the boiserie wood panelling and the ceilings. Some insets of light-toned chamois and heavy-weight wool cloth serve as juxtapositions to the wood. These two complementary opposites reveal a single, able hand; the mark of the same design, free of contamination and utterly personal. A sign that’s rich, cultured and purist.

The same linear harmony that is found throughout the house is clearly seen in the sleeping quarters as well. A total absence of excess, here the essential is pure design. a montagna d’estate ha un fascino irresistibile e si mostra in tutta la sua maestosa bellezza in una delle passeggiate più suggestive che si possano fare partendo da Cortina: il “Giro dei 4 rifugi”, a piedi - anche coi bambini - o in mountain bike per chi è allenato. La prima tappa è Ra Stua dove si può arrivare tranquillamente in jeep partendo da Fiames. Una volta arrivati in malga, ci si trova di fronte a un vero spettacolo: una verde spianata contornata da cime severe, un torrente di limpide acque e un bosco fitto fitto, fanno da cornice a un rifugio dal tetto spiovente con il comignolo sempre fumante. Il prototipo della montagna, carica di profumi: la legna che arde e salsicce e polenta, cataste di legna, fontane, mucche e caprette. Ma dobbiamo partire, quindi si monta in bici e via, sentiero nr. 6, direzione Campo Croce, a 1758 metri. Ci si arriva dopo circa una mezzo’ora di pedalate, un’ora a piedi, giusto il tempo per ammirare una magnifica spianata e poi di nuovo in sella, lungo la val Salata con meta il rifugio Sennes dove si può restare anche a dormire. La valle in questione (in parte nel Parco delle Dolomiti Ampezzane e in parte in quello naturale di Fanes-Sennes-Braies) è un paradiso fatto di monti, pianori, cascate e fiumi. Distese di pini mughi emanano un profumo intenso e il vento annuncia i campanacci del pascolo, segno che il rifugio non è lontano. Siamo arrivati a quota 2126. Dopo una sostanziosa cena, finalmente si riposa: domattina, di buon’ora, si riparte per un altro rifugio. Sveglia all’alba, e di nuovo in marcia, diretti al Biella, alla base della Croda del Becco (46 letti e ristorante). Una pausa-ristoro e poi proseguiamo per il rifugio Fodara, dove dormire la

he mountains in summertime hold an irresistible fascination; you can take in all their majestic beauty by doing one of the area’s most inspiring walks that starts out from Cortina. The “Tour of the Four Shelters” can be done on foot – even with children – or on mountain bike for those who are already in good condition. Our first stop is Ra Stua, easily be reached by Jeep from Fiames. Upon arriving at the malga we find a true spectacle spread before us: an expanse of green set among the severe peaks, a stream of crystalclear water. Very thick woods surround a chalet with its sloping roof and its chimney that always has some smoke coming out the top - it is like entering the prototype of mountain life. Looking around we admire the wood burning

in the hearth, sausages and polenta, piles of stacked firewood, fountains for drinking water, cows and goats. But it is time to move on so we jump on our mountain bikes and away we go down path number 6 towards Campo Croce at 5700 feet. It takes about half an hour of pedalling to get there (an hour on foot), just enough time to admire the beautiful green meadow and then it’s off again; this time we are heading towards the Sennes shelter where hikers can even stay the night. To get there we have to cross the Val Salata and it is a true paradise of mountains, plateaus, rivers and waterfalls. This area is located partly in the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites and partly in the FanesSennes-Braies Natural Park where expanses

seconda notte in quota. Ci aspettano ancora ore di passeggiata tra paesaggi incantati, dove fermarci magari in riva a un ruscello o all’ombra di un grande albero. Una volta giunti al rifugio, possiamo contemplare in tutta tranquillità questo “regno di aquile, stambecchi, camosci e marmotte”. Il rifugio Fodara, a 1980 metri, è costruito vicino a un vecchio alpeggio fatto di casette di legno dove non manca una piccola chiesetta. Posati i nostri zainetti ci prepariamo per mangiare: l’aria di montagna, si sa, mette appetito. Il menu promette bene: insalate dell’orto, paste fatte in casa, canederli, carne e ottime torte. Un’altra giornata sta per finire, e a questa altitudine il sole che tramonta dietro le montagne è uno spettacolo a portata di mano. Il giorno dopo si riparte verso Ra Stua, e facciamo di nuovo il pieno di bellezza: un saliscendi a tratti dolce, mai troppo impegnativo anche in bicicletta, da affrontare adagio, senza fretta, seguendo il ritmo naturale della montagna.

of dwarf pine trees give off an intense perfume. When the wind brings the sound of tinkling bells from the grazing herds, that means the shelter is not far off. We are now at almost 7,000 feet. A substantial dinner precedes a welldeserved rest. The next day bright and early we’ll move on to another shelter. In fact at dawn we are already on the move towards the Biella, located at the foot of Croda del Becco (with 46 beds and a restaurant). After a rest and a bite to eat we continue on to the Fodara shelter where we spend our second night at high altitude. There are still hours of walking among enchanting landscapes where we can stop alongside a brook or in the shade of a majestic tree. Upon arrival at the shelter we contemplate in complete tranquillity this “realm of eagles, mountain ibex, chamois and woodchucks.” The Fodara hut, at 6500 feet, was built near an

Alpine summer pasture where there are delightful little wooden houses and even a small church. We take off our knapsacks and prepare to eat: the mountain air has given us a great appetite. The menu is promising: freshpicked garden salads, home-made pasta, dumplings, meat and delicious desserts. Another day is drawing to a close and this high up the sun setting behind the mountains is like holding a spectacle in the palm of your hand. The next day we head back to Ra Stua and we take in another full dose of extraordinary beauty: the ups and downs are never steep or too difficult, not even for bikers – the terrain is to be covered slowly, without hurrying, following the mountain’s natural rhythm.

ome è vero che Cortina d’Ampezzo è la perla delle Dolomiti, altrettanto preziosa è la sua cucina di tradizione. Che è diversa da quella stellata, senza nulla togliere a chi si fregia dell’ambita stella. È solo attenta alla tradizione, più autentica, genuina; più di sostanza che di ricerca. Cortina è ricca di questi piccoli templi per gourmet e noi li racconteremo tutti, numero dopo numero. Per questa edizione estiva, abbiamo scelto tre locali storici e fuori dal centro, circondati da montagne Unesco e da boschi e prati verdi punteggiati da mille fiori variopinti. Partiamo dal Rifugio Ospitale,

uno dei ristoranti più antichi d’Europa, che la brigata Alverà (quattro fratelli capitanati da una super mamma) ha trasformato in un caposaldo della cucina ampezzana. Segue Baita Fraina, la vecchia casa colonica della famiglia Menardi. Oggi i fratelli Adolfo e Alessandro propongono un menu classico rivisitato, che ha il gusto dei sapori antichi. Chiudiamo il nostro percorso nel gusto a Lago Scin, un luogo di ristoro ai piedi delle Dolomiti già da fine ‘800. Monti, boschi e un laghetto fanno da cornice a questo ristorante lungo la strada che da Cortina porta al Lago di Misurina.

Cuisin gems Cortina d’Ampezzo is known as the gem of the Dolomites and its traditional cooking is just as precious and rare. It is quite different from the star-rated cuisine, without putting down the kitchens who can boast star evaluations. It is just different, more authentic and genuine in quality; overall it is more about substance than it is about exploration.Cortina has a wealth of these small temples for gourmets and we will tell you about them all, one by one. For this summer edition we have chosen three places located outside the centre of town, surrounded by mountains recognised by UNESCO as well as woods and fields dotted with thousands of brightly-coloured flowers. Let’s start with Rifugio Ospitale, meaning Hospitable Shelter, one of Europe’s oldest restaurants that has been transformed into a cornerstone of Cortina cooking by the Alverà brigade (four brothers headed by a super-mamma). Next comes the Baita Fraina, the Menardi family’s old rural house surrounded by centuries’ old trees. Nowadays brothers Adolfo and Alessandro offer a menu of classic dishes in which the flavours of olden times have been reinterpreted. Our itinerary ends at Lago Scin, an eatery situated at the foot of the Dolomites since the late 1800s. Mountains, woods and a lake set this restaurant’s stage where diners breathe in the magical atmosphere, heady with aromas, of a mountain shelter.

Al ristorante Ospitale si può arrivare anche percorrendo in mountain bike la pista ciclabile. La cucina è classica e di alto livello, gli habituè lo sanno bene e ci tornano spesso e volentieri, certi di non trovarsi mai di fronte a sgradite sorprese. Accosta piatti tipici di Cortina d’Ampezzo a quelli di sapore più “mediterraneo”. Così capiterà di scegliere tra i garganelli con le code di gambero e la zuppa di cipolle o tra i casunziei e i canederli all’ampezzana. Oppure tra i filetti di manzo e vitello con funghi porcini e lo stinco fianco a fianco con il goulash di matrice magiara. L’antipasto della casa è da non perdere. Si chiude in bellezza con dolci di gran livelloche sono tutti fatti in casa, come la pasta. C’è anche la possibilità di alloggiare in una delle 7 camere del rifugio.

At the Rifugio Ospitale the selection of dishes is classic and what is on the menu today was there yesterday and will be there tomorrow. The habitués well know this and they keep coming back for more, sure that they will never have unpleasant surprises. The menu is like a ritual that has been repeated since days of yore, as tradition should be. Here Cortina’s typical dishes are flanked by more Mediterranean flavours so you can choose between pasta with shrimp and onion soup or between casunziei (a stuffed pasta with beet filling) and canederli (speck dumplings). Or maybe you prefer beef filets with speck or veal with porcini mushrooms while the pork knuckle is served with a Hungarian goulash. The ending can be sweet but only for the excellent quality of the desserts offered.

DEER RIB STEAK IN RED WINE WITH BLUEBERRY RELISH AND POLENTA Included on the menu for over ten years, this traditional dish has become a standby at the Rifugio Ospitale Restaurant, a classic that never has to be improved upon. The fresh deer meat is New Zealander and the wine used is a Lagrein Riserva. It is accompanied by a home-made blueberry relish and a perfectly round little ball of golden polenta.

INSTRUCTIONS In un tegame medio fare imbiondire la noce di burro e rosolare le costolette di cervo per qualche minuto, aggiustando di sale e pepe. Una volta ben tostato da entrambi i lati bagnare generosamente con il vino rosso e fare addensare la salsa. Preparare un letto di insalata, adagiarvi le costolette e guarnire con marmellata di mirtillo rosso e una pallina di polenta.

In a medium saucepan melt the butter and brown the deer ribs for a minute or two, salt and pepper. Once the steaks have been seared on both sides, pour over them a generous amount of red wine and allow the sauce to thicken. Remove the steaks to a plate and garnish with the blueberry relish on a lettuce leaf and a perfectly round serving of golden polenta.

WHOLE-WHEAT TAGLIATELLE WITH A LEG OF LAMB MEAT SAUCE AND CRISPY MUSHROOMSIUS The “white” (i.e. no tomato) variation is the elegant version of the classic meat sauce of lamb (or of variations such as partridge, pheasant or other delicious meats). First the lamb should be marinated for one night in red wine then diced with a knife. It is then added to the minced vegetables used to flavour meat sauce. The classy touch comes with the crispy chanterelles which should be added only at the very end.

INSTRUCTIONS Marinare il cosciotto d’agnello in vino rosso per una notte. Tagliarlo a cubetti. Preparare un battuto di sedano, carota e cipolla e rosolarlo in olio extra vergine. Aggiungere i cubetti di agnello. Sfumare con vino rosso (nuovo). In un altro tegame con olio extra vergine, imbiondire uno spicchio d’aglio vestito e scottare i finferli, girandoli con un cucchiaio di legno. Prima di impiattare versare sulle tagliatelle i finferli croccanti.

Marinate the lamb’s leg in red wine overnight. Cut it into small dice. Mince the celery, carrot and onion and sauté in extra-virgin olive oil. Add the lamb dice and add some fresh red wine. In another pot sauté the garlic in extra-virgin olive oil then add the chanterelles, stirring with a wooden spoon. Pour the mushrooms over the tagliatelle before preparing the servings on plates.

DEER TARTARE JUNIPER-SMOKED A classic dish that takes on an unusual note with smoking accomplished using branches of juniper and rosemary. How is it done? All you have to do is force heat the herbs in a small pot and capture the smoke in a cognac glass, tipping it over the tartare until it is time to serve it. That’s all!

INGREDIENTS Per la tartare/For the tartare: < 350 g di filetto di cervo fresco 350 gr. deer filet

INSTRUCTIONS Tritare al coltello la carne, metterla in un recipiente e condirla con sale, pepe, succo di limone, ginepro e olio di oliva quindi mescolarla bene e impiattare. In un recipiente alto e stretto mettere tutti gli ingredienti per la salsa e lavorarla con frullatore a immersione. Mettere i ramoscelli in un pentolino d’acciaio e scaldarlo sul fuoco fino a ottenere il fumo che sarà imprigionato in un bicchiere da cognac. Una volta colmo adagiare sulla tartare perché la carne possa assorbire l’affumicatura.

Mince the meat with a knife, put it in a bowl and dress it with salt, pepper, lemon juice, juniper and olive oil, mix well and prepare the portions on the plates. Put all the sauce ingredients in a deep narrow bowl and use a hand-held blender to beat them together. Put the branches in a steel pot and heat it over the flame until smoke is formed. In primavera, quando i ghiacciai si sciolgono, le cascate esplodono in tutta la loro potente bellezza. Acque schiumose, gole, canyons e mini vie ferrate sono a pochi km da Cortina, e i sentieri che conducono alle due cascate del torrente Fanes sono spettacolari. La Valle di Fanes, inserita nel Parco Naturale FanesSenes-Braies, patrimonio naturale UNESCO, si percorre comodamente su un sentiero ampio e ben tracciato. L’atmosfera particolare viene dal “fresco” rumore del Rio di Fanes, interrotto da uno sbarramento artificiale che genera l’omonimo lago e a due cascate che si attraversano agevolmente grazie a due brevi e facili vie ferrate. Un facile itinerario dunque, ma assolutamente da non perdere per la ricchezza e la particolarità del percorso, in una formidabile sequenza di laghi e cascate. In springtime when the glaciers melt, the waterfalls explode in all their powerful beauty. Foaming cascades, steep passes, canyons and narrow iron-cabled trails are located just a few kilometres from Cortina. The paths leading to the two waterfalls of the Fanes river are spectacular. Located in the Natural Park of Fanes-Senes-Braies which has been recognised as UNESCO natural heritage, the Valley of Fanes can be easily traversed on a wide and well-marked trail. Its particular atmosphere comes from the “cool” sound of the Fanes river; interrupted by a man-made barrier, the river forms a lake of the same name as well as two waterfalls that can be easily crossed thanks to two short and easy cabled trails. A simple itinerary but not to be missed – the singular beauty observed along the trail leads to an amazing sequence of lakes and waterfalls.

TOFANA DAWN in

Watching the sunrise is already a spectacle in its own right but, if you are standing at almost 10,000 feet, it is an experience that will touch you right down to your heart. It’s as easy to do as it is to say: you can get to the top of the Tofana peak by riding the “Freccia del Cielo”. With its three segments, this lift takes travellers in a few minutes from the valley floor at 4,000 feet to the height of 10,600 feet of the Tofana del Mezzo. Once sun-gazers reach the third peak, Tofana Terza (also known as Tofana de Inze), a cabled trail will take them up the “big sister” (whose peak is only 18 feet higher). Here the air is clean and rarefied and the sky is clear: everything is ready for an unforgettable sunrise. And that’s how it happens: the first rays, in a tenuous and delicate way, colour the highest peaks first and then, as time passes, bring out an ever brighter intensity. The high clouds reflect dawn’s light in an exaltation of colours that can’t fail to strike eyes and hearts. Breakfast at the mountain shelter on top of Cima Tofana is the perfect conclusion and then it’s time to return to the valley floor, greatly enriched.

Assistere al sorgere del sole è di per sé già uno spettacolo, ma se lo si fa a oltre 3000 metri di altezza è qualcosa che tocca davvero il cuore. Detto fatto. Si sale in vetta con la funivia “Freccia nel Cielo” che, con i suoi tre tronconi, porta in pochi minuti dai 1.224 m del fondovalle ai 3.243 m della Tofana di Mezzo. Arrivati sulla Tofana Terza (o “de Inze”), dopo aver percorso il sentiero ferrato che la separa dalla sorella maggiore (più alta di soli 6 metri) l’aria è pulita e rarefatta e il cielo è sereno; tutto fa sperare in un’indimenticabile levata del sole. Ed è proprio così: i primi raggi colorano le cime più alte prima in maniera tenue e delicata e poi con intensità via via più accesa. Le nuvole, alte nel cielo, riflettono la luce dell’alba in un tripudio di colori che colpisce. Si conclude con una colazione al rifugio Cima Tofana e poi si torna a valle. Più ricchi.

3 Lasciate ogni motore o voi che entrate! Eh sì, perché a Cortina si vive, e molto meglio, a piedi o in bicicletta, mezzo di spostamento preferito da ampezzani e vacanzieri. Qui si salta in sella per andare ovunque e ci sono tracciati per tutti i gusti: dai percorsi panoramici in quota con mountain bike, alle spericolate discese freeride nei boschi agli itinerari “facili”, alla portata di tutti, bambini inclusi, che prevedono tappe nei rifugi per assaporare i piatti della tradizione. E ancora, per gli amanti della bici da strada ci sono gli itinerari del Giro d’Italia, per chi pratica downhill c’è il Bike Park mentre i più piccini impareranno a muovere i primi passi su percorsi MTB di varie difficoltà allo Skill Park. Invece per percorrere la lunga via delle Dolomiti, da Dobbiaco a Calalzo di Cadore (o viceversa) attraverso il Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d’Ampezzo, si può optare per il format bus, più-bici: si sale e scende a piacere e si percorrono le tratte desiderate, tutto con un solo biglietto. Abandon all motor vehicles you who enter! All of them allow rest stops in shelters where traditional dishes can be savoured.Moreover enthusiasts of road bikes can cycle the itineraries established by the Giro d’Italia international competition; for lovers of downhill there is the Bike Park; while the smallest peddle-bunnies will learn their first moves on the MTB paths, for varying proficiencies, at Skill Park. If instead you are up for the long Trail of the Dolomites, from Dobbiaco to Calalzo di Cadore, or viceversa, which passes through the Natural Park of the d’Ampezzo Dolomites, you can opt either for the train or bus; both means encourages you to bring your bike along and, with a single ticket, you can get on and off wherever you like, enjoying the biking segments that interest you most.

Amate l’avventura, i sentieri impervi, le sfide difficili? Il parco Cortina Adrenalin Center è ciò che fa per voi. Aperto nel 2004, ora è composto da 10 percorsi differenziati per altezza e difficoltà. Ci si può muovere tra un albero e l’altro con 84 passaggi per una lunghezza totale di 1050 metri. A seconda dell’altezza e dell’età si possono scegliere i diversi percorsi: si inizia col Giallo per arrivare al Mini, tre percorsi differenti per bambini e neofiti. Si prosegue con il percorso ragazzi e adulti: 32 passaggi tra i 2,5 e i 16 metri di altezza da terra mentre per provare quello Extra, contrassegnato dai colori blu, viola e nero, bisogna aver compiuto 14 anni e avere coraggio da vendere oltre a notevoli capacità tecniche. A tutti i partecipanti vengono forniti caschetto, guanti, imbragatura, doppia longe e carrucola. Il tempo a disposizione è di due ore e trenta minuti, durante i quali il percorso può essere ripetuto a piacimento. PS: il Parco organizza anche corsi di canyoning.

Do you love adventure, impervious nature and difficult challenges? The Cortina Adrenalin Centre Adventure Park is the place for you. Since its inauguration in 2004 it has grown to host 10 routes that vary in degree of difficulty and height. In one path composed of 84 movements, you can move between one tree and another for a total length of 3,400 feet. According to your height and age you can choose different routes, such as the three different paths for children and beginners which start with the Yellow and the Mini trails. For youngsters and adults there is a path of 32 movements ranging in height from 6 to 16 or to 52 feet above ground. The Extra routes, marked by blue, purple and black, are reserved for over-14 year olds only who will need all their courage as well as remarkable skill. All participants are provided with a helmet, gloves, harness, a two karabiner lanyard system and pulley. You have two and a half hours during which time you are free to repeat any route that you enjoyed. P.S. the Park also organises canyoning lessons.

Per toccare con mano la storia, si sale in seggiovia da Bai di Dones sino al museo all’aperto delle 5 Torri dove si insediò il comando del gruppo di artiglieria da montagna dell’esercito italiano. Prima Guerra Mondiale: qui furono dislocate le batterie di cannoni puntati contro le postazioni austriache del Lagazuoi e del Forte Tre Sassi. E le trincee dove allora si combatteva per la Patria, oggi diventano un itinerario nella memoria. Oltre mezzo chilometro sul versante nord delle Cinque Torri, di fronte alla spettacolare parete sud della Tofana di Rozes. Si parte dalla terrazza del Rifugio Scoiattoli e si scende verso le torri, dove inizia il complesso delle trincee. Si vedono postazioni e ripari ricostruiti: camminamenti in pietra e postazioni fatte con tronchi di legno, e ci si addentra nel bosco che da Cianzopè porta al Rifugio 5 Torri. Un sentiero nella foresta riporta a Bai de Dones e alla pace. For those who want to physically touch important episodes in history, the Bai de Dones chairlift will take you to the open-air museum of the Five Towers, command post of the Italian army’s mountain artillery during World War I. This is where the batteries of canons were arranged to fire on the Austrian positions in Lagazuoi and Forte Tre Sassi. The trenches where men used to fight for their country have today become an itinerary of memory extending more than half a kilometre on the north face of the Five Towers, looking towards the spectacular south face of the Tofana de Rozes. Starting out from the terrace of the Rifugio Scoiattoli mountain hut, the trail slopes down towards the towers where the trench system begins. Here reconstructed posts and refuge areas can be visited as well as stone walkways and posts made from wooden trunks. From there you can enter the woods of Cianzopè to reach the mountain hut of the Five Towers. From there a trail through the forest takes you back to Bai de Dones and to the peace of today.

Firstly because this sport allows you to enter into direct contact with nature and landscapes that are unique. Mountains, lakes, woods, clean air, and rivers are the perfect backdrop either for an outing on horseback or even for mounting the first time and learning the rudiments at the various stables where you will find horses, ponies and patient instructors. Once you are in the saddle you can set off to explore the great number of paths through this spectacular area set between the Dolomite peaks. 7 Cortina è anche cultura, e il polo Museale delle Regole (Paleontologico, Etnografico e Arte Moderna Mario Rimoldi) ha in calendario un’estate ricchissima. L’Arte Moderna si ispira al paesaggio attraverso tre mostre: le fotografie dell’Agenzia Magnum, gli acquerelli dell’ampezzano Giulio Siorpaes e gli oli dei grandi autori del Novecento. Per l’Etnografico viene riproposta la mostra Cortina d’Ampezzo/ Vienna. Jugendstil/Liberty con un nuovo allestimento, arricchito da disegni e oggetti inediti. In permanente invece si vedrà Le bambole vestono la tradizione, una collezione di 120 bambole antiche vestite con gli abiti tradizionali di tutta Italia. E infine, al Museo paleontologico Rinaldo Zardini, due mostre dedicate all’architettura di montagna di case e rifugi.

Cortina is also a place of culture and the Delle Regole museum system offers a wealth of summer events. The Mario Rimoldi Museum of Modern Art focuses on landscape via three exhibitions: Magnum Agency photographs, watercolours by Cortina artist Giulio Siorpaes and oil painting by the great artists of the twentieth century. The Ethnography museum is hosting once again, but with a new display, the “Cortina d’Ampezzo/Vienna. Jugendstil/ Liberty” exhibition that has been enriched by drawings and objects seen here for the first time. As always the “Dolls Wearing Tradition” show is on permanent exhibition: 120 antique dolls wear the traditional costumes of all Italy. And, finally, at the Rinaldo Zardini Palaeontology Museum there are two exhibitions devoted to mountain home and shelter architecture.

Da Corso Italia sono passati, e passano, una quantità infinita di personaggi del jet set internazionale e vacanzieri. È un passaggio obbligato per lo shopping raffinato, e questo fin dagli anni ’50. Today as yesterday an endless number of international jet-set personalities and VIP vacationists stroll down the main street of Corso Italia. Ever since the 1950s this is the thoroughfare for anyone interested in shopping for elegant items. Cortina is chic and in the vanguard for everything having to do with fashion and a window-shopping walk down the Corso is like being on the hautecouture runways to see the upcoming fashions. But the Corso is about more than shopping, it is a ritual and it is a pleasure to see and be seen along the promenade. Arrange to meet friends here in the late afternoon, when the tourists pour into the street. You will notice how fashionable brands appear next door to antiquarian workshops, jewellery stores or more classical window displays of local traditional products, including food items. Il salotto buono di Cortina è diventato nel secolo scorso anche il più mondano, per scelta e tenacia della famiglia Manaigo. E il grande successo del “Posta” è legato indissolubilmente al mitico “Bar”, lanciato da Renato Haussmann. Per gli habitué è semplicemente “il Posta” frequentato negli anni della dolce vita ampezzana da reali e politici, attori, poeti e scrittori tra cui Ernest Hemigway, che passava con disinvoltura dall’Harry’s Bar di Venezia al Posta di Cortina “giusto per un drink”. Oggi dietro il bancone tirato a lucido c’è Antonio Di Franco, l’allievo di Haussmann, che propone oltre a cocktails internazionali anche quelli di sua originale creazione. L’ambiente è quello caratteristico dell’antica stube ampezzana della famiglia proprietaria, che si trasforma in un ottimo ristorante per colazione e pranzo, con le specialità della casa.

The Hotel de la Poste is a recognised Italian Historical Locale located in the centre of Cortina and its equally historic bar is a place to go for natives and tourists alike. Over the last century, through the efforts and tenacity of the Manaigo family, Cortina’s up-scale lounge also became the most popular with high society personalities. Quest’anno si gareggia dal 17 al 20 luglio, in omaggio alle edizioni storiche che si svolsero dal 1947 al 1956 negli stessi giorni: un su e giù per i tornanti e sulle alte quote delle montagne più belle del mondo, tra Veneto e Trentino Alto Adige. Sull’itinerario CortinaMerano-Cortina, i protagonisti saranno auto d’epoca e collezionisti-piloti che per tre giorni vestiranno i panni di Tazio Nuvolari. Salite mozzafiato con pendenze che superano il 10%, tornanti che mettono alla prova anche i piloti più esperti (considerate le auto...), ben 58 prove cronometrate e 4 di media, rendono la corsa una gara tecnica, complessa e internazionale. The motors are revving up for the annual appointment with the Gold Cup of the Dolomites race, a long snaking mostly-red line of custom-made automobiles that have been annually climbing the steep mountain roads for over fifty years. This summer the competition will be held from the 17th to the 20th of July as a way of remembering the races held on those same dates between 1947 and 1956, those ups and downs around hairpin turns and over the high passes of the most beautiful mountains in the world that rise between the Veneto and the Trentino Alto Adige regions. For the leg of the race that runs Cortina-Merano-Cortina the key players will be the antique automobiles and the collector-pilots who for three days will recreate the times and fashion of Tazio Nuvolari. Breathtaking climbs on a 10% grade followed by hairpin turns that challenge even the most expert pilots, over 58 chronometered readings of which 4 are taken as the mean, all makes this race a technical, complex, and international competition. Mario Lacedelli, cognome illustre a parte, “è” la montagna, e quando racconta le sue incredibili scalate, sembra quasi di toccarle quelle cime maestose. “Questo è un anno importante”, racconta Mario, “perché si festeggiano tre compleanni. I 75 anni degli Scoiattoli di Cortina, i 60 della conquista del K2, la montagna degli italiani (il 31 luglio 1954 in vetta arrivarono Achille Compagnoni e lo zio Lino) e il decimo anniversario della nostra salita al K2, una faticosa, intensissima e indimenticabile salita. Il K2 è affascinante e infido, pari a nessuna altra montagna. In quota il

t is indeed an honour, as well as a pleasure, to interview one of Cortina’s great men as he talks about his exciting encounters with the mountains that he is not alone in loving. Apart from his illustrious last name, Mario Lacedelli “is” the mountain and when he narrates his incredible climbs any listener seems to touch the peaks. “This year is very important because there are three remarkable anniversaries,” Mario tells us. “The 75th anniversary of the Cortina “Scoiattoli” [literally Squirrel] Climbing Group, 60 years since the conquest of K2 by Italians [on July 31, 1954 Achille Compagnoni and Mario’s uncle Lino arrived at the top] as well as the tenth anniversary of our own K2 adventure, a tiring, incredibly intense and memorable climb. K2 is more compelling and treacherous than any other mountain in the world.

Si parte di notte, con la pila frontale che buca la neve, ma il buio è meno pericoloso delle valanghe. Dagli 8000 alla vetta, 8611 metri, il corpo e la mente sembrano due entità separate, si vive in un’altra dimensione, la fatica è estrema. Lo zio Lino, che è stato il volano della scalata, è rimasto al campo dei 5000 metri, e a ottant’anni mi sembra già un ottimo traguardo. Ricordo la sua battuta, poco prima della salita: «tornate tutti, ma prima arrivate fino in cima». È stato il suo saluto, pacato e determinato, proprio come era la sua natura, forte e silente. Manca molto a tutti noi, Scoiattoli e ampezzani, perché è stato un gran maestro di regole umane e di montagna. Tornando agli Scoiattoli… Primo luglio 1939, data di fondazione di questo gruppo di alpinisti non professionisti innamorati della montagna. Sembra ieri e invece sono passati decenni fatti di grandi e difficili scalate, di arrampicate libere, sulle orme dei freeclimber californiani e francesi, e di quelle sportive. Abbiamo davvero fatto di tutto, arrivando fino al tetto del mondo. Un bel traguardo per gli uomini dal maglione rosso. Tutti per uno e uno per tutti era, ed è, il nostro motto e oggi come allora siamo un bel gruppo di 80 amici, il più giovane poco più di vent’anni e il vecio poco più di novanta, legati dalla passione per la montagna, il rispetto per l’ambiente, l’amore per le crode. L’anniversario della fondazione è sempre un momento importante denso di ricordi del passato e di speranze per il futuro».

t high altitude the weather changes so quickly that what seems possible one moment is transformed just a few minutes later into an absolutely dangerous manoeuvre. Unlike Everest where you just need to wait out the storm, K2 is completely unpredictable; you need to carefully acclimatise yourself at each altitude level, rest only in the camps at 1600, 2100 and 2300 feet until you get to the last one at 2600 feet. You travel in the dark with a front headlamp, making it difficult to pick out the snow trail but travelling by night is the best way to avoid avalanches. From the last camp to the top peak, situated at 28,251 feet, your body and mind seem separate into two distinct entities; it is like living in another dimension, the fatigue is extreme. But once you make it to the top you really are touching the sky and all fear, tension, and exhaustion fall away, leaving room only for overwhelming joy. We started out as ten climbers but only 6 made it to the top: 5 Scoiattoli members and a friend who’s not from Cortina, a great band of friends from all over. Uncle Lino, the last team member on the rope, stopped at the 1600 meter camp and, for his 80 years of age, that seems to me to be an amazing feat. I remember,

just before the climb, he said, “Make sure you all come back, but first get to the top.” That wish, so composed and determined, was perfectly in keeping with his strong and silent character. All of us, Scoiattoli and Ampezzo residents alike, we miss him very much because he was a great teacher of the rules governing men and mountains. But going back to the Scoiattoli... This group of passionate non-professional mountain climbers was founded in July 1939. Seemingly a short while ago and yet decades have passed with long and difficult climbs, rope-teams and free-climbs following the lead of the Californian and French free-climbers. We really have done it all, including walking all the way up to the ceiling of the Earth. A great day for our men in red jerseys; ‘all for one and one for all’ has always been our motto. Even today we are a great group of 80 friends ranging in age from the youngest, who is barely 20 years old, to the oldest who just turned ninety - all sharing a passion for the mountains, respect for the environment and love for mountain cliffs. The founding anniversary is always a meaningful moment, full of past memories and future hopes.

The Iron-Cabled Paths of Cortina

e Guide Alpine di Cortina - i magnifici 26 con alle spalle una tradizione più che secolare - sono ottimi maestri e possono studiare l’itinerario perfetto anche per chi non è un arrampicatore professionista. Primo perché sono maestri di alpinismo, secondo perché trasmettono conoscenze e passione. Chi ha voglia di provare potrebbe iniziare, per esempio, con la conquista di una via ferrata, un’attività ludica accessibile a tutti. Cos’è? Un itinerario sportivo tracciato su una parete rocciosa attrezzata con cavi metallici, gradini, scalette e altri ancoraggi fissi, tipo passerelle di legno e ponti sospesi. Queste attrezzature artificiali rendono praticabile il terreno roccioso, o un percorso esposto, anche ai meno esperti e permettono, a chi non è dotato di tecnica alpinistica, di percorrere cenge, salire pareti, raggiungere vette e facilitare la progressione garantendo al contempo la sicurezza. he Alpine Guides of Cortina – those magnificent 26 who carry on a century-old tradition – are excellent instructors and for several reasons they can develop the best itinerary even for beginning rock-bunnies. Firstly because they are masters of alpine climbing and secondly because they exude knowledge and passion. For example, as a warm up they might suggest with the completion of an iron-cabled path, a playful activity that anyone can do. What does it mean? A sport itinerary marked on a rocky wall equipped with metal cables, steps, stairs and other fixed anchoring features such as wooden planks and rope bridges. These artificial equipments allow even novices to cross rocky terrain or an exposed trail; their use allows even those with no alpine skills to cross ledges, scale walls, reach peaks and facilitate progress in safe conditions. The less expert climbers will be able to start off with an equipped simple

I più allenati invece potranno avventurarsi sulla ferrata Olivieri alla Punta Anna, la Tomaselli, oppure la vertiginosa ferrata Sci Club 18 al Monte Faloria. Soprattutto sulle Dolomiti le vie ferrate hanno spesso origine militare e furono attrezzate nei duri anni della guerra di frontiera combattuta negli anni 1915/18. Una curiosità: la prima via ferrata a Cortina d’Ampezzo nacque grazie all’ingegno di Luigi Gillarduzzi “Meneghel” nel lontano 1907. Di professione fabbro e gestore dell’ex Rifugio WolfGlanvell, eretto in Val Travenanzes e distrutto dall’artiglieria italiana nell’agosto 1915, quest’uomo intuì che per raggiungere il Rifugio Cantore (oggi Rifugio Giussani) c’era la possibilità di tracciare un percorso molto più diretto e veloce del vecchio sentiero. Instead those who are better trained will be able to make their way along the cabled Olivieri route to Punta Anna, the Tomaselli route or the dizzying cabled route Ski Club 18 on Mount Faloria. Especially all along the Dolomites the cabled paths have a military origin and many were set up when this area witnessed the brutal border fighting between 1915 and 1918. A curious fact: Cortina owes its first iron-cabled route to the intuition of Luigi Gilarduzzi “Meneghel” in 1907. This iron smith and keeper of the former Wolf-Glanvell hut (built in Val Travenanzes and destroyed by Italian artillery in August 1915) realised that there was a way to make a much more direct path to the Cantore shelter (today the Giussani hut). So, on his own, he forged and fixed almost 200 bolts into the vertical rock face. Today the path is known as “Menghel’s Stair.”

olf is a fine sport, a terrific sport for a variety of reasons. It is (or maybe it was) a sport for the élite that can be played in virtually total solitude and almost always in places of amazing natural beauty. However, to allow more people to appreciate the sport and to allow a passing fancy to become a real passion, golf has recently been brought into town by In City Golf Cortina. The man behind the idea is Kurt Anrather, a sportsman from the Alto Adige region and founder of this new form of exciting urban competition. He deserves the credit of transforming into golf courses some of Italy’s most beautiful cities with their unique heritage of art, history and landscape. So after Florence and Verona, Anrather’s mission continued in Cortina in a space that will become completely “green” in July. Already a few years ago, from the heights of the Tofane massif, Carolina

As usual the names for this invitational tournament will be decided by the organisation and the sponsor, with over 72 players competing to finish the 18 holes, each one with its own original design. he buon profumo hanno i libri! Insostituibile. Di legno, di serate in poltrona davanti al camino, di giornate all’aperto con l’erba mossa da una brezza frizzante. Che senso avrebbe la vita senza questa magnifica ossessione che riempie notti insonni e giorni troppo uguali? Credo che questa passione smodata per i libri, sia qualcosa che accomuna chi scrive con chi ha ideato Una Montagna di libri a Cortina, l’appuntamento ormai consueto, tra libri, autori, spettatori e “golosi” di buone letture. Tutto ha inizio nell’inverno del 2009, quando Francesco Chiamulera, Vera Slepoj e Alberto Sinigaglia, rispettivamente responsabile e presidenti onorari, si inventano questa arca di cultura e la piazzano nel bel mezzo delle Dolomiti. Cortina diventa, due volte l’anno, il salotto buono delle buone letture e attira il ghota della letteratura italiana e non solo. Erano presenti nella puntata precedente (inverno 2013/14) - con i loro racconti, romanzi, saggi e parole - Dacia Maraini e Elisabetta Lattanzio Illy, Vittorio Feltri e Paolo Mieli, Bruno Vespa e Arrigo Cipriani e Eugenio Scalfari. Questi sono solo una sintesi del nutrito parterre di autori che narrano le loro opere in una kermesse affascinante, dove la bellezza delle menti si intreccia con quella maestosa delle Dolomiti. Sulla prossima puntata, che andrà in onda in luglio, aleggia un mistero fittissimo di nomi, titoli e incontri che sarà svelato “solo a tempo debito”. Sarà comunque un altro successo come lo sono state le precedenti edizioni, benedette da Luca Zaia, presidente della regione Veneto, dal suo vice Marino Zorzato, che è anche Assessore alla Cultura e da Giovanna Martinolli, stesso ruolo alla Cultura di Cortina. Quindi il Veneto, e nella fattispecie Cortina, continuano una tradizione letteraria antichissima cantata anche dall’astronomo francese Lefrançois de Lalande che, come ricorda Zorzato, nella sua guida del 1765 (la più diffusa in Europa in quel periodo, tradotta in varie lingue e pubblicata in grandi tirature), si stupiva perché a Venezia i libri si vendevano «come le noci».

hat a wonderful aroma books have! There’s no mistaking it: they smell of crisp, thick paper and of armchair evenings in front of the fireplace, of grassy open-air days feeling the caress of a soft breeze. Would life be as meaningful without this magnificent obsession and remedy to sleepless nights and monotonous days? I think that this unlimited passion -- this gluttony for books, books and more books – is something that this writer shares with the founders of Cortina’s “A Mountain of Books”. By now a consolidated event the Mountain of Books series brings together literature, authors, public and “gluttons” for a good read. It all started in the winter of 2009 when Francesco Chiamulera, Vera Slepoj and Alberto Sinigaglia (director and honorary presidents) conceived this culture series and decided to place it in the smack centre of the Dolomites. Thus twice a year Cortina becomes the elegant drawing-room for fine literature and attracts, like bees to flowers, the most important members of Italian and foreign literary circles. In the preceding season (winter 2013/2014) spectators listened to tales, novels, poetry and words by Dacia Maraini, Elisabetta Lattanzio Illy, Vittorio Feltri, Paolo Mieli, Bruno Vespa, and Arrigo Cipriani and Eugenio Scalfari. And this is only a partial summary of the great range of authors who come to discuss their work in this stimulating setting, where the beauty of minds interweaves with the Dolomites’ majesty. For the next edition scheduled to take place in July, there is tight secrecy about names, titles and meetings – we are told that this information will only be revealed “at the right time”. In any case it is sure to be as successful as previous editions. The event has always received support from the presidency, vice-presidency and cultural affairs office of the Veneto Region, as well as the cultural affairs office of Cortina. With “ A Mountain of Books” the town is ideally continuing a very ancient literary tradition praised by figures such as the French astronomer Lefrançois de Lalande, whose 1746 remarks on Venice formed the most popular guidebook of his time and was translated into many languages with large print-runs throughout Europe. Zorzato reminds us how surprised Lalande was “that in Venice books were sold as commonly as walnuts.”

A Cortina tutte le meraviglie del cielo sono a portata di mano. O quasi. Si fa teoria al Planetario e pratica all’Osservatorio Astronomico di Col Drusciè, e l’Universo non è mai stato così vicino

on occorre essere romantici per sospirare guardano un cielo punteggiato di stelle. È uno spettacolo che conquista e a Cortina, dove pare che queste siano ancora più lucenti, si possono quasi toccare e insieme a loro, pianeti e pianetini, comete e anche il Sole e la Luna… Non è una fiaba dei monti ma quello che accade davvero, grazie all’Associazione Astronomica Cortina, nata negli anni ‘70 con l’obiettivo di costruire un grande osservatorio e, dopo enormi sforzi economici e organizzativi, questo gruppo di astrofili ce l’ha fatta. Oggi Cortina ha un Planetario magnifico intitolato al grande matematico, filosofo, teologo e astronomo Nicolò Cusano che passò per Anpezo, l’odierna Cortina d’Ampezzo, il 27 aprile 1460: uno strumento eccezionale con una cupola di ben otto metri e mezzo di diametro. Qui si impara a leggere il cielo, a osservare i movimenti simulati e accelerati della volta celeste, del Sole, della Luna e dei pianeti. E dopo la teoria arriva la pratica, in un osservatorio davvero “galattico” che indaga i miseri dell’Universo. Quello del col Drusciè “Helmut Ullrich” è a 1780 metri di altezza e sotto le due cupole custodisce due pontentissimi telescopi: un Newton di 50 centimetri di diametro e uno Schmidt Cassegrain Celestron 11”. Ai neofiti queste precisazioni possono sembrare superflue, ma chi “vive di stelle” conosce bene le potenzialità di questi strumenti. Così, appassionati, studenti e curiosi, possono ammirare le meraviglie del cielo da una postazione molto privilegiata.

ou don’t have to be a romantic to sigh when you see a star-studded sky – it is a natural spectacle that always strikes the star-gazer. In Cortina where the stars seem even brighter than in other places, you feel like you can touch the stars, along with planets large and small, comets and even the sun and the moon... It is no mountain fairytale but what truly happens thanks to the Cortina Astronomical Association. Founded in the 1970s their goal was to build a large observatory and, after enormous economic and organisational efforts, this group of star lovers pulled it off. Today Cortina can boast a magnificent planetarium named for the great mathematician, philosopher, theologian and astronomer, Nicolo’ Cusano who passed through Anpezo (today’s Cortina d’Ampezzo) on April 27, 1460. This truly exceptional instrument boasts a dome measuring 27 feet in diameter! Here you can learn to read the skies, observe the simulated and accelerated movements of the celestial vault, of the sun, the moon and the planets.And once the theory is over the practice begins in a truly “galactic” observatory that investigates the mysteries of the universe. Located at 5,800 feet the Helmut Ulrich Observatory on Col Drusciè has two domes housing the same number of very powerful telescopes: a Newton of 50 cm in diameter as well as a Schmidt Cassegrain Celestron measuring almost 11 feet across. Un sofisticato sistema di controllo via internet “Sky on the Web” presiede all’intera gestione della nottata: dal puntamento, alla ripresa, alla gestione delle emergenze meteo, fino all’archiviazione e allo scarico delle immagini sul computer di casa. I ricercatori cortinesi, che si occupano principalmente di studi riguardanti le comete e osservazioni di galassie per la ricerca di supernovae, cioè stelle che esplodono, hanno già scoperto una trentina di supernovae e un pianetino, battezzato “Cortina d’Ampezzo”. E quest’estate il programma stellare si arricchisce con un Sentiero dei pianeti che si snoda lungo un percorso che porta al col Drusciè, e che permette di fare incontri molto, molto ravvicinati con tutti i pianeti del sistema solare. Curiosità astronomiche Qual è la stella più vicina alla Terra visibile alle nostre latitudini? Il Sole! Seguono la stella di Barnard distante sei anni luce, Sirio visibile a occhio nudo mentre l’astro più vicino è Proxima Centauri, distante 4,2 anni luce e visibile solo dall’emisfero Sud. Le costellazioni visibili sono 88. Questo numero è il risultato dell’originario elenco tolemaico formato da 48 costellazioni cui si aggiunsero nei secoli le altre 40, a opera soprattutto di Bayer e di Hevelius. In una notte limpida e serena vediamo circa 3000 stelle a occhio nudo, ma quelle della nostra galassia sono probabilmente oltre 200 miliardi e in ogni angolo di cielo alcuni milioni di miliardi.
