elcome back, spring! We’ve had a long wait for her capricious dark clouds and clear skies – but that’s her nature. Now springtime is here, bringing with

it a longing for renewal, travel and good eating. Our Grand Tour takes us the length and breadth of Italy, from the Langhe, with a resort in the Nebbiolo hills, to Tuscany and the Brunello region, from a deluxe glamping site in the Veneto to a hotel with a wealth of history in Rome, then to Puglia, and a world-famous spa on the outskirts of Salento. Lakes and countryside are the ideal destinations for a getaway, some romantic, others less so, some short, others stretching out for a week or two, and we suggest six exclusive hotels in a feature dedicated to the new season. We then head south to a Michelin-starred “buen ritiro” in Capri, the island of the gods, and the table of a grand chef. We visit Milan, too, which in spring becomes a focus for international design, and Naples, in search of the secrets of fine men’s tailoring. Enjoy the journey with us!

5 questions to...

Paola Pataccini, director of the IED fashion school in Rome, describes the international reality of the European Design Institute Antonella Euli

1

Describe the IED for those who don’t know it The IED’s strength and unique nature lie in its structure as a network made up of a number of schools – fashion, visual arts design and communication. In Rome I’m head of the fashion school, which comprises three MIUR-recognised three-year courses - Fashion Designer, Fashion Stylist and Jewellery Design. Every school director works in close contact the others so our students can experience the entire spectrum of creativity, interdisciplinary theses and various projects where students with different specialisations work together to create a very real creative microcosm, reflecting the sort of world they will find when they leave the IED.

2

How many branches in Italy, and what they are? We cover the entire country from Cagliari to Turin, via Rome, Florence, Milan and Como, which is an academy. In Spain we’re in Barcelona and Madrid, and in Brazil we’re present in Rio de Janeiro and San Paolo. Of course, the staff at these schools, all expert professionals, put together courses that reflect the character and requirements of the area where they are located. This also allows our students to interface across an almost infinite range. You can enrol in Rio de Janeiro and work with students in Rome, or wherever they may be. Creativity without borders. I run the Rome branch, where we train many people connected with the worlds of ready-to-wear, high fashion and blogging. The jewellery school trains professionals entering high jewellery and fashion jewellery, eyewear etc. All our lecturers are professionals working in top-level style studios, so we’re always aware of employment trends, we know there’s a demand not only for designers but also for people skilled in fabrics, textile use, embroidery and pattern makers. Of course, professional forecasters are highly sought-after in all the specialisations we deal with.

16

WONDER WORLD

3

Some famous names who were trained by IED Many illustrious names have graduated from IED, including Mariagrazia Chiuri, Pier Paolo Piccioli, Marco de Vincenzo, Francesco Paolo Salerno and Salvatore Piccione, representing several generations. But I’m positive we’ll be hearing a lot about many recent graduates. Above all, many youngsters leave IED and then join famous style studios, forging brilliant careers – and we’re very proud of them.

4

Why international students choose the school? Oh, to study in Italy, made in Italy skills and values are our great strengths! IED is international, not local. The training and exchange offered by an international network is incredible. It’s an interchange, providing the links and opportunities that are crucial assets in a world that’s getting smaller and more globalised. The IED offers a wide variety of training opportunities, all tailor-made to suit each student’s individual talents.

5

Jobs after IED... Students choosing the IED can build a solid base for a career inspired by passion, talent and sacrifice. The IED is perfect for those with an inquisitive, enterprising spirit, but they don’t go to the IED to have guaranteed employment – they go because it’s a place where they can open their mind to culture, curiosity and the kind of training the fashion industry requires. We have very close links with the largest fashion companies. They work with us constantly and follow our students even during their studies. We’re always developing a range of projects, and we take part in the competitions in the sector, from Woolmark to Milano Moda Graduate. We work on projects with companies from all over the world. ied.it

Made in Naples The histories of Neapolitan tailors and tailoring interweave like the warp and weft of a fabric over the centuries. These are the stories and talents that have inspired the world-famous “Neapolitan style” Valeria Rastrelli

N

aples the enchantress, looking out over the sea like a siren. Hard to understand at times, but always fascinating. History, art, folklore, music and good cooking intertwine with her traditions to capture the visitor’s heart. The Campanian capital

has long been the birthplace of Italy’s most important tailors. Style, creativity and elegance meet in the city’s streets, and the garments made in the shadow of Vesuvius are works of art that embody the history of Naples itself. We have to go far back in time to discover when the Made in Naples phenomenon was born. It was 1351 – yes, that’s right! – and the Confraternita dei Sartori, or Tailors’ Guild, was formed in the church of S. Eligio al Mercato.

30

WONDER WORLD

This was the period when Naples was capital of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, a centre of fashion and the garment industry, on a par with London and Paris. But unlike the showy French style and the more severe English creations, the tailored suit of Naples was elegant but never too stuffy. This style won over aristocrats and sovereigns, entertainers and businessmen, and even today we can see the mark of timeless tradition. Neapolitan tailors dressed the nobility for many years, combining the artisanal perfection of a hand-made product with impeccable tailoring style, almost industrial in its precision. Some great tailors then brought fame and fortune to Naples in the 19th century – creativity, expertise, dexterity, refined fabrics and opulent workshops fascinated the aristocrats and heads of state that the tailors dressed in new cuts and colours, setting the trends of the age. The story of Neapolitan men’s tailoring is a long one, studded with great names. Italy is a study in contrasts, and Naples and its tailoring offer one of the most evocative. The city walks a line between the sacred and the profane, while the fortunes of its tailors, those who cut by hand and sew their garments amid the city’s languor and beauty, are growing. Beauty – in fashion, food, culture and tourism – is the new national spirit, and inspires Neapolitan tailoring.

he reasons for today’s success are to be found deep in the past. It all started with Alfonso Costanzo Iaccarino, born in 1869 – after emigrating to the USA as a young man and

doing an endless series of jobs, he returned to his home country at the age of twenty-one. The turning point was a chance encounter with a man called Brandmeier, one of the many Germans undertaking the Grand Tour without ever completing it, remaining star-struck by the beauty of our land. The result of their meeting was a hotel-restaurant. This was the beginning of a story that continued a few decades later with his grandson Alfonso, brought up in the family hotel, and Livia, who became his wife at the end of the 1960s. In 1980 the couple abandoned hotel management to devote themselves entirely to the Don Alfonso 1890 restaurant, which they founded in together in 1973 and named after their grandfather. The link with the local area was strengthened by the

he title is inspired by our first visit, to Florence this time, cradle of the renaissance. We continue southwards to the Amalfi Coast and beyond,

to Capri, the island of the gods. Here in the south “renaissance” describes the new ideas from chefs whose creativity and expertise are encouraging a rebirth of the tastes and aromas of the Mediterranean. In Florence we’re the guests of Executive Chef Peter Brunel, the driving force behind the Borgo San Jacopo restaurant in the hotel Lungarno. Located on the left bank of the River Arno between Ponte Vecchio and Ponte Santa Trinita, it’s one of the city’s most exclusive addresses. The chef, a native of the Trentino region, has a penchant for constant research and a sensitivity that goes beyond the kitchen, frequently leading him to turn to the worlds of art of architecture for inspiration, finding new ideas for the presentation of his culinary creations. Next, it’s “Welcome to the South”, as we travel to Salerno’s San Severino market for a special meal at the Casa del Nonno 13. Here, chef Aberto Annarumma shows off his shiny new Michelin star. Born on the coast, his work has involved a lot of travelling and he has encountered many different cooking styles, including Japanese and French cuisine, but he is most at home with the dishes he grew up with, the best of Italian cooking. What remains unchanged is a vision of his craft that creates through subtraction. The use of lemon is a constant in his dishes. Our next port of call is even further south, surrounded by the sea on beautiful Capri, the caprice of the gods. Here we discover another admirable chef, Manuele Cattaruzza of Ziqù, the restaurant of the Villa Marina, a magnificent, refined boutique hotel that draws inspiration from the island as it was in the early 1900s – literary, artistic, daring, hedonistic, unprecedented and unique. Also open to non-residents, it’s a showcase for the typical island cuisine and Mediterranean flavours, presenting dishes that are a skilful balance of aesthetics and taste – raw seafood, fresh fish, pasta made by the chef himself and the flavours of the hotel’s vegetable garden. The tables stand in the garden, overlooking the sea. There is only a small number of covers, to preserve the quality and refinement of the menu.

isiting the Borgo San Jacopo restaurant, with its wonderful view of the Arno, is a journey to the peak of high Italian and Tuscan cuisine, accompanied by

a cellar of over 500 of the finest Italian and international wines. Opened in 2004, the BSJ is one of Florence’s most famous addresses, winning acclaim from the Guide Michelin, L’Espresso and Gambero Rosso. The warm interior creates the atmosphere of a domestic dining room. It is laid out on two levels, and a huge window enables a dialogue between the restaurant, the river and the beauty of the city. It was designed by Florentine architect Michele Bönan, who was inspired by the charm of 1950s Italy and the style and creativity of Salvatore Ferragamo, an icon of Made in Italy creativity and expertise. The restaurant walls are hung with fashion sketches and photos, as well as portraits of the celebrities of the time. The large window framed by an arch opens up the interiors to the beauty of the Arno and the city itself. The linen tablecloths and elegant grey upholstery harmonise with the warm tones of the walnut flooring and the dark black details. The table is laid with glittering crystal and fine porcelain. The restaurant serves Italian dishes that express the philosophy of Executive Chef Peter Brunel – a love of the surrounding region and its excellent products combined with a knowledge of the ingredients, treating them with the attention and care they deserve, bringing out the maximum flavour and most pleasing textures. Brunel blends tradition and innovation with a steady, skilful hand. His cooking is refined and creative, using unusual, precious ingredients from all over the world, while never forgetting to highlight the traditions of Tuscany and Italy. Potatoes, trout and rice are his favourite ingredients, and he has dedicated much thought to their use. The menus of the Caffè dell’Oro and Borgo San Jacopo feature many of the creative interpretations he has developed, in an assortment of very different styles. The wine list compiled by Salvatore Biscotti, a sommelier with a vast experience in his metier, features the cellar’s most refined and innovative wines. lungarnocollection.com

THE HOUSE OF NEW FLAVOURS

hat is now a Michelin-starred restaurant used to be the barrel cellar where wine would be stored and left to age. The old cellar has now been transformed into

an evocative space that seems to have come down to us from a bygone age. The classical severity of a Michelin-starred restaurant is softened by the warmth of the lighting and materials, which combine to emphasise the domestic atmosphere. The spirit of the Casa del Nonno 13 can be expressed in just a few words - flavour, character, skill, star, land, history, daring, tomatoes. Three facets of the one brand - the Michelin-starred restaurant and Osteria at Mercato San Severino, the Salumeria and Cucina in Salerno. The people behind the project are Alberto Annarumma and maitre d’ and sommelier Pasquale Marzano, a seasoned professional who has an almost unmatched knowledge of the art of hospitality and skilfully guides guests in their choice of wines. The wine culture lies at the heart of the offer proposed by Casa del Nonno 13, with an extensive, well thought out list that includes Italian and international labels, with an emphasis on regional products and a service that is in step with the most up-to-date technology. The cherry on the cake is a table in the cellar – just one – for connoisseurs of fine wines. In the ancient cellars of the 18th century building, home to the over 1,000 bottles that make up the restaurant’s prestigious wine store, a special table awaits wine lovers and the most refined palates. A single table, a magical place with impeccable surroundings and service, where guests can enjoy a gastronomic experience based on fine wines chosen under the sommelier’s guidance. There’s an extensive choice, with wines from across Italy and a careful selection of Champagnes, special vintages and labels from independent winemakers. Chef Alberto Annarumma constructs the menu around the wines selected. casadelnonno13.it

A place to be Rome is fascinating and magnificent, especially in spring. The Eternal City hosts small corners of paradise, places that give their best when nature awakes Valeria Rastrelli

he first warm spells of the year tempt us to take long walks through one of the world’s most beautiful cities. There’s always a new place to visit, even for those who know it well. One such spot is the Roseto Comunale, at the foot of the Aventino, with over a thousand varieties of rose from around the world. Another is the Orto Botanico of Gianicolo, two thousand square metres of colours and aromas, while

for lovers of the Far East will head for the Japanese Cultural Institute to lose themselves among the lovely cherry blossom. The walk can be rounded off by a picnic at the Villa Borghese, surrounded by statues, fountains and ancient buildings, or a meal with examples of traditional Roman cuisine - carbonara and cacio e pepe are only the beginning! Or if you prefer a rather over-the-top stay in the heart of the city, there’s a large hotel evoking history, fashion and cinema, where guests can feel they are living in a film, surrounded by glamour and beauty. The Grand Hotel Plaza on via del Corso, between Piazza Venezia and Piazza del Popolo, is close to the monuments and the most famous piazzas, including Piazza di Spagna, the cinematic Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Foro Romano and the monumental Piazza della Rotonda, the site of the Pantheon. For almost a century and a half the hotel occupied the old Palazzo Lozzano, designed by architect Antonio Sarti in around 1834 and completed in 1837. The same architect redesigned it as a

luxury hotel Locanda between 1862 and 1864, and as such it is one of Rome’s oldest and most prestigious hotels. Probably opened in 1865, it soon became a favourite haunt of travellers, aristocrats, ambassadors, architects, politicians and sovereigns visiting Rome. Further work was carried out in the 1920s, inspired by the Art Nouveau style, and it was given the more international-sounding name of “Plaza”. The hotel’s grandiose character is evident in its rooms and communal spaces – breakfast is served in the magnificent ground floor Salone Mascagni with its early 20th century frescoes and authentic Art Nouveau decorations, while guests can enjoy a drink or a nightcap in the Bar Mascagni, dedicated to the famous composer. It hosts many of the pianos played by the great musician. The chestnut and cherry wood cabinetry and finishings create a classic, sophisticated space, enhanced by the Carrara marble floors and the original design by architect Mongiardino. The same can be said for the Lobby Bar. Guests arrive in what is an ideal place for relaxation in an exclusive atmosphere after passing through the historic revolving doors, the lobby and its high painted ceilings and the function room with its huge skylight. The Terrazza dei Limoni is a lovely spot for cocktails and dinners beneath the stars, wrapped in the fragrance of the colourful citrus trees. On one side the terrace looks out towards Trinità dei Monti, Villa Medici, La Casina Valadier and Villa Borghese, and on the other onto majestic cupola of the church S. Carlo al Corso. The Sorelle Fontana restaurant is a wonderful venue for an elegant dinner, with its original sketches by famous designers. Executive Chef Evans André loves recreating typical Roman specialities using the finest seasonal products from the surrounding region. grandhotelplaza.com

The Grand Hotel Plaza has also been used as a film location – here, Luchino Visconti found the 18th and 19th century atmosphere he loved. It has provided background for the interiors of L’innocente and more recently Ocean’s 12, Gangs of New York and Along Came Polly. Fellini, too, frequented the Plaza, where he met American directors and actors

he view from the Villa Althea in Mango, Langhe, embraces a vast expanse of vineyards around Dolcetto and Moscato. The villa compreses two buildings, an older section dating back to the 18th century and another from the early 19th, surmounted by a tower completed in the early years of the 20th century. The hotel’s eclectic nature is immediately clear from the architecture, and this impression is then reinforced by the interiors, where every

room offers a stylistic surprise. This is no conventional hotel, designed by someone whose main aim is to follow the latest design trends. We are, in fact, in a small country house hotel that transcends time and fashions. Its owner, Maria Gabriella Fogliati, personally oversaw its creation, renovating a family residence that had lain abandoned for years. This now much-loved resort preserves the memories of youth and a rural culture that has now sadly disappeared. In front of the villa, for example, a centuries-old mulberry tree still stands, now under the protection of Italia Nostra, an organisation promoting cultural heritage and environmental protection. It is the only surviving tree in what was once a long avenue of mulberries, reminding us that until the 1950s silkworms were cultivated in this region. “It used to be the women’s job”, says the owner, “and every Saturday they would go to the market in

country hotel Alba to sell the cocoons they had gathered, carrying them in straw baskets”. And it is this love of memories, enlivened by imagination and a passion for furnishing, that shaped the decorative choices. The bright colours, abundant carpets, fabrics, wallpapers and tapestries, the terracotta or old wood floors and the exuberance of the floral patterns create warm, joyful and intimate surroundings, a wonderful contrast to the impersonal minimalism of so many modern hotels. Every suite – there are only seven, all with fireplace – is different, and sometimes even host some family furniture, complemented by objects the owner enjoys seeking out in antique markets. “I didn’t follow any plan”, she admits. “In many cases an object or a painting found on a stall would provide the inspiration for an interior, so there are period items like the Louis XV headboard in the Pink Room, the 19th century canopy bed crown in the Lilac Room, the original 18th century woodwork in the party room, and the 19th century billiard table. A 19th century wrought-iron chandelier hangs in the dining room, the interior that best express the Villa Althea’s fairy-tale atmosphere. The wall paintings, in fact, bears illustrations of three favourite stories – The Fox and the Grapes, the Fox and the Lamb, with line after line of Latin text drawn directly from the writings by Phaedrus, and Red Riding Hood. There are also some exotic touches, especially in the furnishings for the One Thousand and One Nights room, and in a wall renovated with antique hand-made Neapolitan tiles that lends a hint of Arabia in the swimming pool. The horseshoe-shape indoor pool lined with columns recalls an ancient Roman baths, and it is partially surrounded by windows that in summer open out onto the

The building, erected between the 18th and early 20th century in the eclectic local style, is surrounded by gardens and immersed in a landscape of vineyards.
