our years old and Wonder World Seasonal is celebrating the event with an exciting revamp. For 2017 we’re bringing you a new, even more attractive and refined graphic look along with increasingly in-depth, entertaining and authoritative content.
We’re keeping the four-season format, with winter, spring, summer and autumn issues. In fact, our magazine’s publication dates coincide with the solstices - the shortest and longest days of the year, 21 December and 21 June - and the equinoxes, when day and night at the equator are the same length, in other words 21 March and 21 September. Significant moments that mark the turning of the seasons and the renewal of the natural cycle. Four dates with exclusive stays in Italy and abroad, including an extremely high-end offer of chefs and fine food, as well as Made in Italy design, hotels and hospitality - plus, of course, subjects that are always popular with travellers, like fashion and exclusive objects. Everything you need for good living, Italian style! Happy birthday, Wonder World Seasonal. We wish everyone an exciting time! Matteo Galbiati CEO Platinum Media Lab

5 questions to...
Federica Damiani, Director of Consumer Marketing for Leading Hotels of the World offers a snapshot of 5-star travellers Teresa Crespi
1
How have voyagers and the way they travel? The way modern travellers move around has changed a great deal, becoming more informed
and aware. Now they seek unusual experiences that cannot be found with just a click on a website. As our hotels are independent and do not form part of a large chain they understand this desire perfectly. To fulfil this they create experiences involving the culture and traditions of the region where the hotel is located. The same applies to “bleisure” travel. We are seeing a growing tendency for people to prolong business trips by a few days to discover and enjoy the destination they have travelled to for work reasons. They are often joined by their family so they can make some time to spend with their nearest and dearest. Travellers are also keen to discover new destinations that are still untouched by mass tourism.
2
Who is the “inquisitive traveller” revealed by LHW’s research? This year we commissioned a global-wide study that would enable us to get to know a niche market and
offer the best response to it. We call it the world of the “inquisitive traveller”, the kind of guest that The Leading Hotels of the World seeks to pamper and whose wishes we try to fulfil in the best possible way. Our survey enables us to identify a guest with a very particular set of characteristics - a traveller who is attracted by the idea of discovering new cultures, avoids the familiar and has a deep love of adventure. This means Leading Hotels is seeking out new destinations where art, culture, history and culinary philosophy form an elegant fusion that offers visitors somewhere new to explore. The journey experience is a crucial moment in the life of an inquisitive traveller - an affluent individual who enjoys most of all exploration and discovery, and who invests interest and energy in culture, culinary experiences and interaction with local people. The sort of person who avoids mass trends, seeking the cutting edge rather than the everyday. Above all, these travellers will spare no expense when it comes to creating unique memories and experiencing stories they can share with friends and family when they return home.
3
In a few words, the privileges offered by the Leaders Club Leaders Club is the loyalty programme for The Leading Hotels of the World, the ideal solution for inquisitive travellers. It offers personalised
services and travel benefits, like the opportunity to earn free nights and enjoy dedicated VIP tariffs (a discount of up to 20% on the Best Available Rate), room upgrades, breakfast and Wi-Fi included in price. These advantages will make stays in all of the 375 Leading Hotels throughout the world even more pleasurable. Available with joining fee. Leaders Club members want to be recognised as special guests, and our hotels are always very happy to offer them top-class treatment. The Hotel Sacher Wien (www.LHW.com/sacher), for example, is where the Sachertorte was created. This, the world’s most famous chocolate cake, is prepared using a secret recipe that dates back to 1832. On arrival, every Leaders Club member is greeted with a delicious slice, so they immediately feel welcomed and at home.
4
What are the favourite destinations in Italy? Italy hosts more Leading Hotels than any other country. We now have fifty-six.
The mountain destinations are doing very well, winter and summer. A search for holistic wellbeing is a constant theme and our thermal spas like the Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort and Fonteverde are the perfect choice for anyone seeking a stay with an emphasis on personal wellbeing. Italian cities of art, such as Naples, Verona and Florence, are also being rediscovered by discerning visitors.
5
New hotels in Italy and the world for 2017 Eight new hotels have recently joined our collection, which comprises 375 independent hotels in over 75 countries.
We will be joined by three new jewels in Italy - the Baglioni Hotel Cala del Porto in Punta Ala, The Ashbee in Taormina and the Villa Cora in Florence, plus another two European entrants, the Gran Hotel Miramar in Malaga and the Belvedere Hotel on Mykonos. Over in the USA there are two new Leading Hotels in California, the Hotel Figueroa in Los Angeles and the Malibu Beach Inn in Malibu, and South America, the Hotel Emiliano in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

emo Ruffini took the helm of Masion Moncler as CEO and President in 2003, after recognising the appeal and potential of luxury sportswear, especially the puffer jacket, the iconic Moncler garment. The company began to
produce collections that have become signature items across the generations, not just the young, achieving a dazzling success almost instantly, throughout the world. It has opened monobrand boutiques in the world’s most prestigious shopping streets, consolidating the brand’s positioning in the greatest department stores and luxury multibrands and celebrating the Moncler World with legendary advertising campaign, shot by the world’s renowned photographers. Remo Ruffini has revolutionised the much-loved puffer, inverting its function, transforming the technical garment into an item of for display, conferring elegance at high altitudes but also to be worn with laid-back poise, coordinating with bewitching formal garments. And now the evolution of luxury sportswear and outerwear, such an important element in the Moncler Dna, has found a new couture expression in the Moncler Gamme Rouge collection designed by Giambattista Valli. The Moncler Gamme Rouge AW 16/17 collection that featured in the Paris runway shows in the striking Salon d’Honneur of the Grand Palais is a celebration of Italy’s most beautiful Alpine landscapes, an elegant homage to the entire Alto Adige region, from Tyrol to the Dolomites. Powerful and surprising, the collection combines the stylistic codes of precious sportswear with couture shapes and details.

spa, a wellbeing centre designed as an exotic oasis inside a five-star luxury hotel. An opportunity to recharge your batteries in the heart of the city, just a stone’s throw from Milan’s famous fashion district. The Grand Spa is the brainchild of architect Paola Giambelli, head of management at the Palazzo Parigi, who says: “Wellbeing underlies everything we do, and every detail reflects this, starting with the
decorations in the communal area and treatment rooms. We’re proud that our Spa is the largest in the centre of Milan, and is flooded with natural light. For us, wellbeing means providing guests with surroundings that recall holiday destinations, facilities where we can offer a choice of natural and more technical treatments”. This magical place also features the OASIS, a health bar and restaurant for light, healthy nourishment, plus a large fitness area where guests can use the latest generation Technogym equipment or work with qualified personal trainers in the private room, also natural and with a garden view. With its delicate Moorish-inspired architecture, the Palazzo Parigi’s Grand Spa - reminiscent of a tranquil Riad - is associated with Valmont, the exclusive Swiss beauty brand, offering guests and all Milanese a unique holistic retreat, a journey of the senses that begins, even before the treatments, in exotic surroundings among selected works of art, furniture, precious materials and distinctive architectural details. The mosaic-lined swimming pool is located on a spacious terrace with a view of the magnificent private garden, making it possible to relax in the open air all year round. The palm-studded central patio provides an pleasing view of the relaxation room and the Oasis, health bar and restaurant. The wellbeing offer includes a Turkish bath, Finnish sauna, Jacuzzi, emotional shower and ice fountains. The seven themed treatment rooms are all different, creating a profound sensory experience in a series of exotic settings with the atmosphere of Morocco, India, Sweden, Polynesia, Bali and China. And in the pink marble Royal Hammam Privé, guests can enjoy the most sumptuous Moroccan beauty rituals. The presence and supervision of a Moroccan aesthetician and therapist, plus the use of authentic organic products from that region of Africa, ensures that these rituals are carried out in the most traditional, correct way. and Maxi Dolphin yachtbuilders. With a degree in winemaking and a boundless passion for nature she was the natural choice to run the family’s winemaking concern (producing around three million bottles a year), while her elder sister Carmen is CEO of the Hotel division and younger sister Valentina is vice president of the Construction sector. Aged 42, married with two kids, a native of Franciacorta by birth and by choice, Francesca lives in Erbusco on the vineyard-clothed hill of Bellavista, near Albereta (an exclusive resort among the vines) and the prestigious estate that bears its name, founded forty years ago by her father Vittorio. Proclaimed “Cellar of the Year” by the Gambero Rosso 2017 guide, Bellavista is one of the largest estates that have helped make the hillsides of Franciacorta, in the heart of the Lombardy region, Italy’s most prestigious Metodo Classico wine-producing regions. These enchanting slopes with a sweeping view of Lake Iseo are the very essence of Franciacorta, a region of natural and artistic beauty, hospitality and a wonderful gastronomic tradition. It’s a land where quality lies in the soil, a cradle of prestigious wines appreciated by connoisseurs visiting from other parts of Italy and abroad. In Francesca’s words, “This land is where my roots are, and it’s where I imagine my children’s future lies. My father and I still feel moved when on certain days we look out from the Bellavista hill over the countryside that surrounds us, and experience once again its wonders and natural harmony”.

The time the vines remain in the ground - we cultivate the vines to give them a longer life, make them healthier and natural - and the time the wine ages in the barrels that makes the wines of Bellavista increasingly elegant and complex, reflecting an Italian concept of harmony that we believe is an identifying factor that we can build our future on. There’s also the time devoted to clients and consumers - we are seeking to bind them more and more tightly to the company through initiatives and experiences like the Bellavista Open Day, which give enthusiasts an intimate encounter with the estate’s values”. 60

All GFase jewels feature elements of Art Nouveau, Oriental motifs and echoes of symbols, and some of them can be worn by men or women - like the “Nome della Rosa” champagne straw collection, a homage to Umberto Eco’s best-selling novel “The Name of the Rose”. illa Cora, built in the late 19th century by the architect Pietro Comparini for baron Oppenheim reflects the stylistic trends of the period, dominated by a decorative eclecticism that enriches the residence with a variety of artistic styles, some of which are frankly bizarre. Completed when Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, it has become one the city’s greatest
cultural and social icons. After many changes of ownership, Villa Cora was transformed into an exclusive Grand Hotel in the late 1960s and after a careful restoration it re-opened in late 2010, and in 2013 it joined the ranks of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux association. Its forty-five rooms and suites in the main villa and two adjoining annexes retain the period architectural style. There are twenty-nine rooms and suites in the main residence, spread across four floors, in four styles. The first features original frescoes, the second is dedicated to the former empress Eugenie and her beloved roses, the third takes a Moorish, orientally-influenced approach and the last floor is the location of room 401, a junior suite inspired by 1950s America, served by a private lift. Designed by the eclectic Philippe Starck, also responsible for the Stern in Paris, it is nothing less than a homage to Venice - benches and sofas inspired by the seats of gondola, Murano glass and screens that recall the city’s Carnival. The minuet of flavours starts with breakfast and ends with dinner. Gianfranco Vissani’s restaurant is in Baschi, Umbria. The chef revolutionised Italian cuisine, and in the 1980s and 1990s he created a new, distinctive style - rich, full of flavour, exuberant - just like him, in fact. He opened his Casa Vissani and dedicated it to “all those enterprises that through sacrifice and constant commitment to quality producers and the local region support the excellence of Made in Italy products and services”. Now father Mario’s establishment is regarded as one of Italy’s best, a place where style, service and creativity combine with fine food expressed through a constantly-changing selection of dishes, inspired by a perfect alchemy of technique, flavour, ingredients, genius and aesthetic appeal.

CASA VISSANI: A GOURMET TEMPLE
G
ianfranco Vissani has been “Vissani” for a number of years now, always among the world’s top chefs. He has revolutionised Italian cuisine, and in the 1980s and 90s he created a new style of his
own - a plain-speaking Umbrian, sometimes painfully honest, he is a much-loved figure. The public face seen so often on TV, his ebullient personality that has shaped his intense relationship with the media can sometimes seem at odds with the pleasant, generous man you may meet at the Casa Vissani in Baschi, his restaurant dedicated to “All those concerns that help sustain and promote the excellence of the Made in Italy label through their sacrifice, constant search for producers and support for their region”. The venue was launched in 1963 under the name of “Il Padrino”, then managed by his father Mario. It was simple place that Gianfranco took over in 1973 - he helped it develop to what it is today, one of Italy’s best restaurants. Its hallmarks are style, service, creativity and fine cooking. The range of dishes offered changes constantly, reflecting the achievement of a perfect alchemy between technique, flavour, raw materials, intuition and aesthetics. The two main components of his cooking are his knowledge and experience of international and classical cuisine, combined with the freshness, variety of flavours and the imagination embodied by the gastronomic traditions of the various regions. There is a huge gulf between the image of Vissani reflected by the media and his restaurant near Todi, where guests can also sleep in one of the luxurious rooms. On the shores of Lake Corbara, he is the captain of a tireless team that includes his son Luca, the master of ceremonies, and his sister Paola, the boss in the kitchen and superlative pastry chef, sommelier Roberto Santi and maître Giuseppe Vicario, the now celebrated stars of the “Casa”. They know each other well, and even when Vissani is elsewhere his presence pervades the restaurant. It’s the same in all the world’s great restaurants where the leader may often be absent - the important thing is his exceptional gastronomic vision. It’s a pleasure limited to a select few - not because of the prices (one of the tasting menus with five courses, three coordinated wines and a change of cover for every course costs 90 euro) - but because those enjoy this incredible experience are true gourmets who are ready to drive long distances to reach restaurants like this. Casa Vissani is a spellbinding place inhabited by a group of people driven by an extraordinary passion. www.casavissani.it

ocated in the heart of Rome, admired by tourists from all over the world, opposite via Condotti and the Spanish Steps, at the meeting with via del Corso. But while the Palazzo Fendi has such a high profile it still retains its exclusive charm, now enhanced by the Hotel Fendi Private Suites on
the third floor. Here, intense attention to detail combines harmoniously with a desire to rediscover an atmosphere of intimate welcome, almost like a private residence. The use of select materials is reflected in the desk made with blocks of coloured marble and continues in the warm colours of the flooring and, in the private areas, the glass partitions with woven metal mesh and the Travertine wall panels. The suites range from 35 to 60 square metres in size, and their design expresses the language of the brand. Most of furniture is specially designed and made by Fendi Casa. However, the interiors still present a dialogue between design pieces from different sources - vases and carpets by Jan Katz, mirrors by Giò Ponti, sofas by Fratelli Campana, armchairs by Fritz Hansen - and the mix this creates has a stimulating international appeal. The Fendi Private Suites project is the work of architect Marco Costanzi, who is also responsible for Fendi’s new headquarters in the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, part of Rome’s EUR district. We asked him how he managed to integrate two iconic elements of the city, a building of great architectural importance and a name that is a symbol of Italian - and especially Roman style. “As well as being a representation of the Fendi brand, the palazzo Fendi
design hotel
is also a symbol of Rome itself. My work was based on what was already there, but often hidden. We removed layers from the walls until we arrived at the original 19th century finish, recovering a rich, complex element. We could not avoid taking the building’s history into account - this did impose some limitations, but was also a source of great charm and personality. A unique world like this is made of many pieces”. The hotel’s name evokes high-end luxury, but the architect believes that hospitality is a more multifaceted concept, involving sensations and ambiences. “I’ve tried to create interiors that will make guests of the Fendi Private Suites feel at ease, in a discreet, intimate atmosphere. The lounge area is designed to welcome guests in a private drawing room, almost as if it were in an apartment, but one that is extremely sophisticated, combining vintage and contemporary pieces. Different architectural interiors transform the atmosphere”. The hotel’s unique location is perhaps its most alluring feature. The architect defines it in these words: “The Hotel Fendi Private Suites is a constant quotation, a bridge linking Fendi and its origins. The materials used in the hotel, in harmony with the rest of the structure, were chosen as a tribute to Fendi’s new headquarters, the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, to Rome and to the entire sweep of its history. It’s

ain was forecast across Liguria, but although summer had been in hiding for weeks it decided to make one final appearance. Portofino did the rest. And everything was worthy of the lovely Ocean Pearl - and Platinum Experience! The 41-metre motoryacht created by the famous London-based architect Norman
Foster was dazzling in its silver livery, with sinuous, almost shark-like minimalist lines and a striking elegance. And she’s not alone - the Ocean pearl has two identical sisters, the
Ocean Sapphire and Ocean Emerald. All on board, then, for the MIDDLE EASTERN EXTRAVAGANZA, an exhibition of design objects by three brands Daevas, Ivan Paradisi and Igreg Studio. They usually work for an Oriental clientele, but this time they displayed their design and furnishing pieces on the Ocean Pearl’s upper deck, enabling them to introduce their work - and themselves - to a select party of guests. The evening organised by Platinum Experience with the collaboration of We Are Disobedient enjoyed the support of prestigious sponsors like Floating Life (a specialist in super and megayacht management, charter and sales - in fact, they made available this magnificent megayacht from their extensive fleet), Maserati, represented by Forza SpA, official Maserati dealer for the Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta regions, which displayed a Levante 275hp Diesel 3.0 and a GranTurismo Sport CC Automatica 4.7 on Calata Marconi facing the Ocean

Ocean Pearl and Maserati Gran Turismo Sport CC Automatica 4.7 Pearl, and Italy - Sotheby’s International Realty, a hallmark of uniqueness and exclusivity. An opportunity that allowed us to invite on board guests who have shown themselves to be connoisseurs of art, design and elegance and share with them a very special, exclusive event staged on this magnificent floating venue. Guests admired the display of objects and furniture by our designers, who stood by ready to explain, describe and discuss their pieces, and were then shown round the Ocean Pearl accompanied by Floating Life Yacht Broker Manuel Maiano. To round off the evening they were also offered a menu of Ligurian dishes with fish and vegetable fritters, shellfish, swordfish and tuna carpaccio and squid ink trofie pasta with scampi, prawns and saffron threads. The evening began at around seven to enable guests to view the sunset from on board the yacht. This was followed by switching on the lovely illuminations that surround the Ocean Pearl as darkness descends. Special thanks go to the sponsors who showed such confidence in the success of this event, and to everyone who contributed their professional skills to the practical organisation, sometimes complicated by the nature of special location, to MIDDLE EASTERN EXTRAVAGANZA and the entire crew.
