FROM THE Desk of the City Manager

The City Manager's Office handles the general administration of the City of Temple and executes the policies and objectives of the City Council. The City Manager is directly responsible to the Mayor and City Council and oversees the day-to-day operations of the City by coordinating all City departments activities and functions, including the development of the Strategic Plan. The City Manager's Office also leads the financial and budget management process for the City and directs the City's efforts to plan for the future.

Fire Master Plan: Enhancing Safety for Our Growing City

October is National Fire Prevention Month, a time to remind us all of the importance of fire safety and prevention As our city continues to grow, so do the efforts to keep our community safe, not just during this month, but year-round. One of the focus areas in the City of Temple’s Comprehensive Plan is Public Safety.

We strive each and every day to fulfill our goal of providing exceptional public safety services and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of our community. As we continue to work on enhancing our fire response, we also want to empower you, our residents, with ways to keep yourselves and your families safe.

We’ve made significant strides in upgrading our fire department in three main areas: equipment, personnel, and training. This year, we’ve added new fire trucks and other emergency vehicles to our resources, ensuring that our firefighters are equipped with the best tools to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.

We’ve also expanded our firefighting team to handle the rising number of calls. These additional firefighters are critical in keeping up with our growing city’s demands. We’ve also invested in our training center, allowing our crews to practice in realistic and challenging environments, ensuring they’re prepared for any situation.

Keeping our community safe isn’t just the responsibility of our fire department; it starts at home with each of us. There are several steps you can take to protect yourself, your family, and your property. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.

Test these alarms at least once a month to ensure they’re working, and replace them when they reach 10 years old or stop responding. It’s important to create a fire escape plan for your household and practice it regularly so everyone knows how to act swiftly in an emergency.

Another important safety measure is to be vigilant in the kitchen. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires, so always keep a watchful eye when preparing meals, especially when using heat sources. It’s also important to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide. The CDC reports that carbon monoxide poisoning is the number one cause of accidental poisoning in the U.S. Installing carbon monoxide detectors in your home and regularly testing them is a simple yet vital step to ensure your safety.

The City of Temple is committed to providing effective fire services to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our beloved community. Together we can help keep our community safe and avoid unnecessary tragedies. Thank you for your continued trust in Temple Fire and Rescue and for taking steps to ensure a safer future for
