Welcome to Playful Arts Festival 2014! Word from the curators
Now in its second year we invite you to play with us duringthis four-day event focused on playful arts. Physical games, workshops about interaction and public space, performances, night games, talks, live music, everything that is playful and fun makes this festival into a dynamic whole. With the theme Urban Play we will turn the historical city of ‘s-Hertogenboschinto a playground for people of all ages and nationalities. Through surprising cross-overs between art, play and interaction we would like to give you new experiences. We invite you to push your own boundaries together with others. Why? Art has to be seen and experienced. By doing this together we create a feeling of connectedness. By doing this in a public space we make it easily accessible for a diverse audience. The audience can jump in immediately or stand back and spectate. We believe participating in play contributes to a feeling of happiness. “Playfulness is the shortest road to happiness” – Bernie DeKoven. Maybe it is a bit daring to create a festival where everything depends on the audience: without the audience, there are no players; without the players there is no action, no game, and
no momentum. However we believe being surrounded by play will ignite that playful spark in people. “There is a need to be playful (...) Being playful is the engine of innovation and creativity: as we play, we think about thinking and we learn how to act in new ways.” – Eric Zimmerman Cross-Overs During the festival, we will combine different fields such as game and play design, interaction design, visual arts and performance to inspire the audience and designers. We aim to stimulate the creation and exploration of new cross-overs. By bringing together artists and designers from different disciplines they can be invigorated by each other’s work through which their own work can reach new heights. A game designer knows how to design playful interactive experiences like no other. An artist excels in the translation of an underlying concept to an interesting (visual) art work. The cross-overs can ultimately result in deepening gameplay or new connections with the audience. By fusing these together wonderful new works can come into existence. We invite you to join and explore this with us. Welcome! Let’s play together! Iris Peters and Zuraida Buter Curators, Playful Arts Festival

Urban Game The Larks: Know Your Place Lucasplein June 21 / Markt June 22
Come along to watch or join in with The Larks’ interactive performance piece, Know Your Place, which pitches you – the audience – at the centre of a rigid and ridiculous social system over which you must triumph. Your social position dictates how you can move; the upper class will move freely, whilst the poorer man will have to be more creative…
Urban Game Pieter Verhees & Tet van der Donk: The Way I Tango Kerkplein June 21 & 22 12.00 – 18.00 hrs Control a giant robot wheel, explore interactions with the robot. You invite it to move. What kind of character will your robot become? Will you be able to control the robot?
Urban Game Blast Theory: Dial Ulrike and Eamon Compliant Stationsweg 29 | 24 hrs/day
Enter a world of bombings and kidnappings in this tense work about political violence. To start go to Stationsweg 29, 5211 TV ‘s-Hertogenbosch and call the phone number which is marked on the poster. Choose whether you will be Ulrike or Eamon then hang up. Once you’re in position your phone rings: now you are the person you chose. As you hear about the progression into violence and death you stare at the everyday surroundings. Find a vantage point, linger near a doorway or to find a nearby bus stop then use your keypad to make your choices. You hear about TV appearances, the firebombing of a supermarket and the night that Benno was shot by a cop on a demonstration. Or, as Eamon, you reflect on getting beaten by soldiers as a teenager, the killing of Ivan Toombs and your rise to the ‘Nutting Squad’ in charge of internal security for the Irish Republican Army. As Eamon and Ulrike reach the climax of their political actions, you too must make a choice. Hang up now and walk away. Or stay on the line… A version of this work – Ulrike And Eamon Compliant – was commissioned for the 53rd Venice Biennale.
Urban Game Eric Zimmerman & Nathalie Pozzi: Starry Heavens Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch, De Mortel 4 June 20-21-22 | 12.00 – 17.00 hrs
Starry Heavens is a large-scale physical game which premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in 2011 at the Kill Screen ARCADE event. It incorporates a life-sized gameboard of steel plates and several gigantic weather balloons. It is a social and strategic game that is also a moral fable. The name of the game comes from the epitaph on Kant’s tombstone: “The Starry Heavens Above, the Moral Law Within.” A single player is the Ruler, who stands in the center, calling out “BLACK,” “WHITE,” or “GRAY” – the three colors of spaces on the grid. Other players move in unison to the color that is called, trying to banish each other, make it to the center, and depose the Ruler. The players dance around the Ruler in what looks like a stylized waltz, everyone stepping together when a new color is called. | The game will be accompanied by live musicians June 21 & 22 starting at 13.00, 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00 hrs.
