EDITOR'S NOTE
Summer Lovin' School’s out, and it’s party time! The summer vibe means a little less stress and more unscheduled days. For our family, it means night swimming, day trips to fun places around town and a few camps here and there. Summer is also the perfect time for a party! My daughter, Sofia (11), was born in January, so pool parties don’t work for her birthday. We make up for that in summer when we plan an un-birthday pool party so her best friends can gather for summer fun. Finding ideas for a new and different party can be stressful. We gathered details from local moms about themes, locations and more to give you some ideas for your kiddo’s next bash. Check it out on page 25. Plus, our Mompreneurs (page 22) can help you plan the party of your dreams. They’ve planned everything from baby showers to birthday parties and have a knack for finding (or creating!) unique items that make your party stand out. Looking for some adult birthday ideas? You’ll love the ideas in our Date Night article (page 16). Whether you’re on a budget and want to stay local, or you’re willing to venture outside of your bubble, we’ve got some great options for adult-birthday–dinner fun. Lately, I’ve seen more and more of my daughter’s friends get cell phones. I’ve resisted thus far, but she’s going into middle school, so I’m not sure I can hold out much longer. When we do go shopping for a phone, I’m going to have her sign the cell phone contract we have featured on page 14. It’s a neat little reminder to her that having a phone is a privilege. Sit back, relax and enjoy the summer!

3 Summer Things I Can't Live Without… Supergoop! Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist SPF 50 Infused with vitamin C, this sunscreen is a staple in our house. It works on wet or dry skin, so the kids don’t have to dry off to get sunscreened-up! Find it for $13 at Sephora or Blue Mercury in Winter Park.
Fun Patio Lights We just had my 50th birthday party (yikes!) at our house. We spotted these cool strung patio lights and hung them by our pool. They add such a festive, summery feel to our home. Love!

Planning a party? Central Florida has some new places and services that will make your shindig a celebration to remember. Words by JJ West PHOTO: adventuresinfloral.co.uk
MAIN EVENT Entertainment at Pointe Orlando The tagline for Main Event at Pointe Orlando is “Eat. Bowl. Play.” So, I thought, “OK, it’s a bowling alley with a restaurant.” What an understatement! When they say play, they mean play laser tag, play in a giant virtual reality theater/gym, play a gazillion arcade games, play casino games, play on a zero-gravity acrobatic rope attraction and more.
Main Event offers crazy amazing birthday packages for ages 5 and up. Packages include food, basic décor and a ton of options for game play. What I love most about their party packages is that you can personalize them. Do you want to bring a specialty cake or favorite appetizer? Do it. Do you want more décor? Bring it. Do you want them to take care of favors? Add that to your package. Do you want to add alcohol for adult parties? Sure! I also love that their party calendar is open every day of the week from 11 a.m. to midnight! So, if your summer baby’s birthday falls on a Tuesday, you can still celebrate on her actual birthday. My favorite thing about Main Event’s party planning? Procrastinator moms like me can book a child’s birthday party only 48 hours in advance! mainevent.com
Don’t Forget the Entertainment! GIG SALAD Entertainment
Want to make your party special? Gig Salad is going to be your best friend. From magicians and mermaids to stilt walkers and a BMX team, they have it all. Gig Salad is designed to connect party planners like you to independent performers. You can view profiles, reviews and even videos of recent events. When I searched for a mermaid to attend my 4-year-old’s swim party, I received quotes within 10 minutes of my inquiry. I then communicated directly with the performers to choose the right fit for our family’s budget. Easy peasy! gigsalad.com
One More Thing for Summer! Cabana Life
I’ll take all the help I can get protecting myself and my family from the sun. I love the new line of apparel from Florida-based Cabana Life. The sun protection is built into the clothing. They offer swimsuits, rash guards and actual clothing for kids and adults. I don’t mean “I look like I am going on a safari” clothing; I mean actual, everyday clothing cute enough for a day date! cabanalife.com

Big Kahuna’s Bowls
A certain Disney movie about a certain girl who finds out who she is and saves her island has my children going crazy for all things related to the Pacific Islands. Choo Choo to the Zoo!
Starting June 1, animal lovers will have a new way to visit the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens throughout the summer — SunRail! Grab the kiddos, and take the SunRail (sunrail. com) train to the Sanford station. Once there, you’ll find a free, Choo Choo to the Zoo-themed shuttle waiting to transport you to the front gate of the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens (centralfloridazoo. org). The shuttle then makes a second stop at the Welcome Center on First Street in Historic Downtown Sanford. Return shuttle times will be timed with scheduled SunRail departures from the Sanford station and posted for customers at the drop-off areas at the Zoo and the Welcome Center. The pilot Zoo shuttle program will operate from June 1 to September 1, 2017. Also during this time, Zoo attendees can show their SunRail ticket to receive 20 percent off their admission to the Zoo. DIY Summer Project:
Memory Keepers HOW DO YOU DOCUMENT YOUR FAMILY'S SPECIAL LIFE MOMENTS? Gone are the days of glossy photo prints and halfway completed baby books. In the days of social media and technology, documenting your family’s memories has a more modern twist. Here’s how three PLAYGROUND moms document their families' memories.
LETTERS TO FALLON
Zack, Shawn and Fallon (1) Shannon Letters to Fallon are the daily musings (posted to social media but saved in a master document) of my evolution into motherhood and my observations of Fallon’s experience as a new human. They are also a tribute to the sentiments of unconditional love my mother expressed to me throughout my life that I didn’t have the capacity to understand until I became a mother. I follow several social media profiles that fall under the parenting category, and I realized that our society focuses heavily on the documentation of physical milestones (i.e., how old our children are, when they got their first tooth, when they started crawling, their first words, etc.) I didn’t even take month-by-month pregnancy photos, so the chances that a pen would ever meet the pages of the “Baby’s Firsts” book were slim. During the weeks following Fallon’s arrival, it became clear that how she made me feel was so much more profound than how she looked at four months old. Thus, Letters to Fallon was born. I share the letters through my social media accounts, but I also record them in a document I hope to publish someday. When Fallon is old enough, I will read them to her in the order in which they were written. Perhaps one day she’ll read them to her own children. For now, these short pieces are my therapy. They get me through the most grueling days of being a mom, and I’ve come to find that they have the power to do the same for other mothers. – Shawn Shannon, DeLand mom and Contributing Writer for PLAYGROUND Magazine
4 OTHER WAYS TO DOCUMENT FAMILY LIFE Video. Take short videos of daily life and edit them to produce a year-in-the-life video. Facebook page. Start a private Facebook page where you post your family’s favorite memories. Email. Set up an email account in your child’s name and email snippets from daily routines, special events and more. Family blog. Start a family blog and post to it every week. You can publish the blog or make it private.

THE STORY OF US
Jessica, Billy, Lawton (8) and Lily (7) Ventura My husband bought a family journal as a gift for both of us after our second child was born because our family was now complete. It’s a simple, leather-bound book where we record our happiest and saddest times together as a family to help us always remember our life events. Those events are what bring us closer together. We love to record family vacations, holidays, milestones and funny things the kids have said over the years. We even ask our family and houseguests to write in the book when they visit us. It’s a simple way to record our memories, but it works. We love to go down memory lane together and read the book from time to time. We often laugh and sometimes cry going over all of the fond memories. We love this family tradition. Every family has a story. This is ours. – Jessica Ventura, Baldwin Park mom and PLAYGROUND Magazine's Advertising Manager
TRAVEL PHOTO BOOKS
Mike, Tracey, Jake (21) and Sofia (11) Exploring new and favorite places, enjoying experiences and just being together — that’s what’s important to our family. So, it was natural that after each trip, we would put together a photo book of all the highs and lows of the places we visited and the times we had. Introducing children to different cultures and places is vital to their growth as empathetic human beings. However, sometimes these memories are forgotten as time goes by. During the trip, we are careful to take photos that illuminate our journey, from beginning to end. My pictures are saved in iPhoto, tagged and documented, but going through them just isn’t the same until they are in a book! To help preserve our memories, I often put together a photo book filled with memories from our trips. Each book includes tickets, photos, itineraries and more. You can even pull photos from Instagram, Facebook and other social media. Some books are handmade; others are Shutterfly photo books. Our daughter loves to pull them out to remember where we’ve been. PLAY Tip: These books don’t have to be only for travel. Document birthdays and special events or make a family yearbook. – Tracey C. Velt, Lake Mary mom and PLAYGROUND Magazine's Editorial Manager

Cellphone Contract Stop the cellphone madness with this agreement signed by your kiddo! Today’s kids are on the go. With after-school activities, play dates and sleepovers, giving your child a cellphone to keep in touch seems like a good idea, but your child should understand the rules associated with having a cellphone first. This contract opens the door to that conversation and allows you to set limits and boundaries so cellphone use doesn’t get out of control. These are the things I’m responsible for:
These are things I will not do:
___ Answer the phone if mom or dad calls. I will text or call back right away if I miss the call.
___ Text, email or say anything through this device that I wouldn’t say in person.
___ Follow all the rules wherever I am (school, church, activities, etc.).
___ Take inappropriate pictures of myself.
___ Let my parents know immediately about any texts, calls or social media comments from people I don’t know.
___ Be involved in inappropriate behavior. ___ Send mean texts or emails to others.
___ Make sure my phone is charged.
___ Call or text anyone before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
___ Keep my phone in good condition.
___ Bring my phone to the dinner table.
___ Understand that if I lose or break the phone, it is my responsibility to replace or fix it. ___ Hand over the phone to my parents at any time, for any reason. ___ Let my parents know my passwords. ___ Turn in the phone to my parents every night before bed.

Trevi's Outdoor Bar

ere’s the real disclaimer: the Omni Orlando Resort has always been one of my family’s favorite staycation resorts. You can’t find a higher quality resort for the price. We’ve spent Mother’s Days, Father’s Days and birthdays at this posh yet affordable destination. So, I was thrilled to hear that the resort is expanding its already fantastic amenities. It’s all about the pool for my crew. There are two killer pools, but the lazy river, corkscrew slide and poolside bar and grille put this resort over the top for my fam. When I heard they were expanding the pool area to include more kids’ slides and a wave pool, we started planning our next trip. Plus, there are now family-friendly cabanas located in the wave pool area. Sign me up! These will probably be heavily sought-after, so reserve them as soon as you check in (or before). The new slides and wave pool areas opened over Memorial Day weekend. There are plenty of delicious dining experiences on-site. David’s Club, an upscale sports bar, will probably be Dad’s favorite. David's Club features pool tables, a wall of TVs showing sports games and comfy leather seating. Mom will love the comfort and quality of the food and service at Trevi’s, which is open for all three meals, including a fantastic Florida-style brunch (think: local honey and grits bar) and an Italian lunch and dinner menu. Drop off the kids at Camp Omni Kids Escape on Friday or Saturday evening and enjoy a date night at Zen Sushi Bar. The kids will want to hit up the more casual eateries, such as Croc’s Pool Bar & Grille, Morsel’s for a quick snack on the go and Piper’s Grille located at the clubhouse.
PLAY Tip: During the spring and fall seasons, guests should hit Piper's at sunset to hear bagpipers playing on the 10th tee.

LOVE OMNI ORLANDO RESORT The golfing is (for some people) the main event at Omni Orlando Resort. This resort offers two golf courses and the Leadbetter Golf Academy for lessons, workshops and innovative training technology. They’ve turned your swing into a science. Check it out if you’re a golf enthusiast. The nine-hole Par 3 course is super fun and is ideal for families with young kids. You don’t even have to reserve a tee time; just check in at the pool towel hut. Rates are $16 per round for adults and $8.50 per round for children (includes the use of three Callaway clubs). It’s super casual and easy — great for the novice golfer. Crane’s Adventure (mini) Golf is also on-site.
Golf experiences range from mini golf to the David Leadbetter Gold Academy — and every level in between.
A few other activities for your itinerary include the sunset s’mores at the fire pit, the Surrey bike rentals and — my personal favorite — the Mokara Spa. Make sure to go to your spa appointment early to take advantage of the hot tub and saunas. Ahhh… Memorial Day weekend also kicked off 102 Days of Summer at Omni, which includes even more scheduled events and activities than usual — everything from Saturday night fireworks to dive-in movies, poolside DJ dance parties and even cooking demos (like kid’s pizza-making)! Omni Orlando Resort offers an unforgettable backdrop for your next family staycation. If your family is anything like mine, you’ll be hooked after your first visit. MOMPRENEURS
These Moms Know How to Party!
Serendipity can sometimes carve an unexpected path. Just ask Andrea St. Onge of Longwood and Cristina Lima of Sanford, owners of Lou & Pepper.

few years ago, the two moms met at their daughters’ preschool. Andrea, mom to Harper (6) and Eddie (3), and Cristina, mom to Ava (6) discovered they both worked in hospitality, shared a passion for celebrating and had a knack for planning and organizing. Soon afterward, Lou & Pepper, their party planning company, was born. “It started out as a joke!” explains Andrea. “But it grew into a stable business model.” The mompreneurs like to say they “curate stylish and quirky parties for kids ages 0-101.” Named after their beloved pets (Andrea’s cat named Lou and Cristina’s French bulldog named Pepper), Lou & Pepper handles the stressful, time-consuming details of party planning so customers can relax and celebrate. Depending on the level of attention clients need, Lou & Pepper offers custom parties for clients who need a please-do-everything approach and semi-custom parties for clients who need less help. The company offers a third option for clients who want a DIY approach: a party-in-a-box delivered to clients’ doorsteps via their LouandPepperParties Etsy shop.
While party planning seems like a fun business, launching it wasn’t a piece of cake. “We had a bit of a rough start,” recalls Andrea. “Business was slow, and it can be difficult to juggle everything it takes to create a successful business while including family time. A lot of work happened after the kids went to bed.” “We rely heavily on our husbands, especially when we work weekends,” Cristina adds. “Their support is crucial.” By late fall, business started picking up, thanks to their marketing efforts, newly launched website and referrals. The moms also enjoy the side benefits of entrepreneurship. “The kids see us working with contracts and meeting with clients, but also making time for family,” Cristina explains. “It’s great to show them you can balance work and family.” It’s also been a great teaching tool, Andrea points out. “I show Harper how much things cost and how to stay within budget.” To learn more about Lou & Pepper, visit their website at louandpepper.com.
“We do a lot of decorating ourselves,” adds Andrea, “including items we curate specifically for each client, such as themed partywear and cake table backdrops, which provide amazing photo opportunities.” Safari Party Baby Shower Designed by Lou & Pepper

Skyler’s Emoji Birthday Party Words by Heather Reneau, Photos by Jessica Friend Photo Design
Best for Ages: 1 to 12 Group Size: We had 16, but this location could easily accommodate more Cost: $250 for 10 kids, $15 for each additional child (food cost and cake table not included) Location: O2B Kids Because this was Skyler's last year in preschool, we decided to invite her school friends to her birthday party. She wanted to celebrate at her favorite play spot: O2B Kids in Oviedo. They offer a complete party package that includes printed invitations, two party hosts, decorations and party bags for the guests. They only host one party at a time so it never gets too crowded, and Skyler felt like the most important person of the day. Everything was set up for us, and all Skyler's friends had a blast. Because the kids are still young, their parents stayed; however, this could easily be a drop-off party for older kids. O2B offers several themed party packages (pirate, princess, sports or super hero) or you can create your own with guided activities such as rock climbing, face painting, outside adventures, an obstacle course and more. Skyler opted for a scavenger hunt and face painting. However, the kids had the most fun just running and free playing in this awesome space that includes several climbing tunnels, a mini diner, different kinds of building blocks, dress-up costumes, a rock wall, mini bowling lanes and more! The party room was large and brightly decorated — a great space to party. Add some pop by enlisting the help of Lou & Pepper (louandpepper.com), local party curators who can create an amazing theme cake table for you. This emoji-themed cake table was off-the-charts cool with a feature wall made of pinwheels, an amazing balloon garland that wrapped around the front of the table, emoji food signs, a super tall layer cake and poop cupcakes from A Custom Kreation (407-733-2672, Facebook.com/ ACustomKreation), delicious emoji cookies from Cookie Cousins in College Park (cookiecousins.com), Gourmet Basics Smart Fries and emoji lollipops.

Olivia’s Mermaid Slumber Birthday Party Words and Photos by Juliana Geisler
Best for Ages: 8 and up (younger ones can just stay for the pool party) Group Size: Up to 20 Cost: $350 Throwing a mermaid-themed birthday doesn’t have to break the bank. We held a sophisticated mermaid slumber party for our soon-to-be 8-year-old with a little help from Etsy. The birthday decor bundle was created by Etsy’s PhiloDesignz (etsy.com/shop/philodesignz). The package came with the invitation, posters in two different sizes, a pennant banner, food sign table tents and more printouts for about $30. The designs were customized and quickly sent to me in a digital file that was easy enough to send to the printer. Sure, there was a good amount of cutting and gluing, but doing this work myself helped with the budget. Following the color scheme from the invitations and décor, I reached out to my network of mom friends for some inexpensive party additions. I found a friend of a friend who had thrown a Little Mermaid-themed birthday and had the netting I needed, a plethora of starfish, tablecloths and tons of shells! I was constantly on the lookout for clearance-priced, beach-themed décor. These small touches added to the party. During the birthday party, the girls swam in the mermaid lagoon. Their favorite activity was a pirate-themed treasure hunt that led them to custom-made mermaid scale chokers ($2.50 apiece) by Bubblegum Graffiti, an Etsy shop out of Clearwater. Pinterest was also a big help when it came to finding mermaid-themed snacks to serve. The girls enjoyed delicious treats such as seaweed (green grapes on skewers) and mermaid poop (meringue cookies dyed to match the décor.) And who can forget the cake? This incredible funfetti cake with buttercream icing made by Sugar Sugar Cake Boutique ($150) was the perfect after-swim treat.

Deagan's Rainbow Race Car Party Words by Kelly Clore, Photos by Kabiki Photography
Best for Ages: 5 and up (recommended) Group Size: Minimum 8 guests Cost: $11-$25 per person Birthdays are only once a year, so we go ALL out! Deagan's 5th birthday took us over the rainbow — turbo style! The idea started with a 4-going-on-5-year-old who is obsessed with going fast and anything with wheels. Not only that, but his favorite color is — every color! Deagan and I enjoy parties where there’s something to do for both the kids and adults. So, we decided to host the festivities at the Family Fun Town (familyfuntown.com) in Orange City, which boasts a go-kart track, arcade, laser maze, batting cages and more. Each racing star (guest) received arcade gift cards so they could play games upon arrival. Then, we celebrated with pizza, fruit kabobs and a delicious "Rainbow Road" cake from Moore Cakes (386-337-0933) located in Deltona. Finally, it was time to hit the go-kart tracks! The birthday boy's rainbow cape, rainbow masks for guests, adorable No. 5 metallic balloon, multi-colored square plates and even the racecar piñata were from Party City. I brought multi-colored tablecloths and some striped napkins from IKEA. I found a rainbow tablecloth in Target’s Spritz section and taped it to the wall to make a photo backdrop. The tissue decor was from Target’s party section. The party bags included goodies from Target’s Spritz section: rainbow-colored crayons, rainbow ribbon twirlers, whistles, colored medals and a trophy prize for every racing star! Family Fun Town kindly hung a rainbow "Happy Birthday" banner above the track to create our finish line — that final touch brought it all together perfectly. Go, Speedracers!

Harper's Picasso Birthday Party Words by Andrea St. Onge, Co-owner of Lou & Pepper Photos by Michael Mathews Photography
Best for Ages: 3 to 99 Group Size: A good party tip is to keep the guest count equal to the age of the birthday child Cost: Approximately $750 for 10 kids Party Planner: Lou & Pepper As a professional party planner and owner of Lou & Pepper (louandpepper.com), there's a lot of pressure to create a unique and fun party experience for my own kids! My daughter, Harper, has always been interested in art, so it was pretty easy to come up with the activities and theme for her 6th birthday extravaganza. Party activities were fun to create. They included a decorate-your-own apron, canvas paintings that guests got to take home, a bead jewelry station, a chalk art station, an artist area with Do-A-Dot markers and stamps (for the younger guests), decorate-your-own treat bags, a selfiestation with instant printed photos and an interactive color-your-own table cover at the kids' table. To make it easy and fluid, guests were welcome to do any of the activities at any time throughout the party. Because of the mixed ages of children invited (siblings, cousins, friends), we had to have something for everyone. Our "Food for Starving Artists" table incorporated lots of color in the fruits, veggies and even the beverages. The feature sweets table centered around a hidden rainbow cake and color palette cupcakes by A Custom Kreation (407-733-2672, Facebook.com/ACustomKreation), paint brush rice krispie treats and lots of candy in a rainbow of colors! Additional treats included a snow cone machine and popcorn machine. Hand-painted signage for all the stations (I watercolored the paper and then printed the signs on the paper when it was dry) and hand-drawn table cover for the kids table really made this party pop!
