6 Simple Ways to Make
Family Fitness a Priority New year, new healthy habits By Maddy Zollo Rusbosin
After spending December navigating a whirlwind social calendar, exercise may have fallen to the bottom of your neverending to-do list. The New Year is often seen as an opportunity to hit reset, but that can be easier said than done. Enter: Lauren Kennedy of Flock Fitness, a local fitness company that specializes in providing workouts and a supportive community to Central Florida women. Laura shared six simple ways to encourage your family to make exercise a lasting (and fun!) habit in 2024: 1. SET AN INTENTION Whether it’s to get outside more often or work up a daily sweat, Lauren recommends saying your goal out loud to your family. “That way, you make it known it’s going to be happening,” she says. It’s also crucial to communicate to everyone that working out doesn’t have to feel like a chore — it can be fun! Have a conversation so everyone can share ideas, from going to the park on Mondays to taking a family bike ride on Fridays. 2. PICK A TIME (AND STICK WITH IT!) The easiest way to make sure a task is completed? Make it part of your daily routine. Exercise is no different. “It’s important to set aside that time and set the intention of what you all plan to do together,” explains Lauren. Whether it’s a standing after-dinner walk or a mid-afternoon swim, plan something that everyone can look forward to at the same time every day. “While every schedule is different, aim for 30 minutes every day,” she continues. 3. LEAD BY EXAMPLE To encourage your children to move more, show them how enjoyable it is. As you know, kids follow their parents’ lead, so have them observe what you like to do for exercise. “If kids are seeing their parents having fun and wanting to be strong, they’re going to want it for themselves as well,” says Lauren. She sees this firsthand because Flock Fitness welcomes children to their classes. While little ones may stay in their strollers or play on a blanket, older kids often join in to show how they can do burpees too. 4. BE REALISTIC To make working out a part of your family’s new normal, it’s key to be flexible. “Kids are always bringing some kind of surprise.
Things aren’t always going to go as planned,” explains Lauren. “So if your schedule is getting crazy, maybe cut back to two or three times a week and eventually work your way up to that daily goal.” 5. MAKE IT A GAME Hide-and-seek, obstacle courses, family competitions — these are just a few ideas for incorporating more movement into your days. “It can be anything that gets everyone moving, even a Taylor Swift dance party,” says Lauren. Turning on music and letting loose is a perfect solution for those days when it seems unlikely you’ll get out of the house. “Even a 10-minute dance break will get things going. Or if you’re out of ideas, try GoNoodle,” she says. The YouTube channel has guided dances and other activity-based games, making it a good fallback plan for when you can’t do a more structured workout together. 6. BE MINDFUL Pause and check in with yourself too. “You always hear the phrase, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup,’” says Lauren. So go ahead: Drink the water. Get the rest. Go outside. Journal. “You need to give yourself what you need so you can give everything that you can to your family.”

How to Build a
Hot Cocoa Party Board Tasting the holidays has never been sweeter! Words by Molly Shapiro Boe, The Preppy Hostess
‘Tis the season for boards! If you’re looking for a fun yet festive option for your next playdate or sleepover, create a hot chocolate station that both kids and adults will love. It’s the easiest way to sip your way into the holiday spirit.
Rachel Doyle Photograp
hy
Step 1: Gather up all your servingware and hot chocolate ingredients. The essentials: • A flat board or platter • Small bowls • Mugs (bonus points for festive ones!) • Hot chocolate mix • A selection of your favorite hot chocolate toppings Step 2: Place the hot chocolate fixings on the board. • Start with something large, like the bowl of hot chocolate mix, and work around it, adding smaller items last. • Chocolate candies, peppermint sticks and different flavored marshmallows are go-to items to dress up your drink, but feel free to get creative or let your littles choose their favorite sweet treats to add to the mix. • Don’t skimp on the cookies! They work well as a filler and are great to dip into your mug. Step 3: Enjoy! Finally, heat up some milk in a slow cooker or electric kettle nearby, and you’ll have a delicious hot cocoa ready in no time. Choose your mug, add your toppings, and remember, you can never have too many marshmallows!

NOW SNOWING Central Florida Families Can Create Their Own Frosty Fun Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin | Photos by iStock: Maliahhh
BRRR, IT’S (NOT SO) COLD OUTSIDE. Despite Florida’s temperate holiday season, you can still enjoy some wintery activities with your kids without booking a
trip to the mountains. All it takes is a little creativity. Here are some fun ideas that’ll give children a taste of cold weather and let them channel their inner Elsa or Olaf.

HOST A BLIZZARD PARTY
DIY SNOW The simplest recipe for whipping up your own snow at home: 1 cup of conditioner and 2 cups of cornstarch. ”I call it snow dough, and you can add glitter for sparkle,” says Becky Kincaid, owner of Creative Jane. “If it seems sticky, add more cornstarch, or if it’s too dry, add more conditioner. It’s super easy and smells good too.” Place the snow in a tray or a sensory bin, then add trucks, cars, arctic animal toys and more. Kids will love plowing snow and playing with the white fluff without their hands getting cold.
Pick a night and tell the kids you’re getting “snowed in” for the evening. Try… • Having everyone dress in their favorite winter gear, from festive sweaters to those cozy Uggs you rarely get to wear. • Cranking the AC down low and building a real fire (or put one on your TV screen). • Making cheese fondue for dinner with bread, veggies and cooked meat like diced chicken or steak. • Watching wintery movies like Snow Dogs or Happy Feet. • Setting up a hot cocoa bar like the one on page 26.

SHOVEL “SNOW” Pick a room in your house and cover the floor with cotton balls. Give your kids little shovels, and let the fun begin. Snowball fight!
ICE PAINT What’s better than crayons? Ice paint! Simply fill an ice cube tray with water, then put a few drops of food coloring into each slot. Cut popsicle sticks in half, placing the pieces into each cube (this will be the handle). Keep in the freezer until frozen. When you’re ready to paint, bring out the tray and let it sit for a few minutes. The cubes deposit more color when they’re a teeny bit melted. Contain the mess by placing paper in a baking sheet. Now, the ice paint is ready for kids to create their own masterpiece!
BUILD A SNOWMAN With playdough or sand, of course! Work together to decorate your snow person, using buttons for eyes and other craft supplies you have on hand. Barbie accessories can also make for stylish add-ons.
GIVE TOYS THE FROZEN TREATMENT After your children go to bed, gather up some of their favorite plastic toys (think cars and trucks or figurines) into a bowl, fill it with water and put it in the freezer. The next morning, pop the ice cube from the bowl and set it out in a pan or other container. If your child loves Frozen, set an Elsa toy nearby so it looks like she used her magic to freeze the toys. Your kiddos will want to rescue the toys encased in ice, so give them a toy hammer or other plastic tools and let them get to work.
