PUBLISHER'S NOTE Team Playground (L to R): Alicia McKee, Jessica Friend, Alisha Champ, Heather Reneau, Brant Muekeley, Jessica Ventura, Wendy Meyer, Cortney Thekan; Photo by Amy Smith

See Ya, Summer! Why does summer break always go by so fast? One minute, you’re tossing a school year’s worth of crumpled papers in the trash; the next minute, you’re filling shopping carts with new shoes and pocket folders in every color. We hope you’ve had a PLAYful summer spent building memories with your family. We sure did! Road trips? Check! Beach days? Check! Sleep-away camp, sports camp, day camp, art camp — all the camps? Check, check, and check! This year, I took a summer break of my own while Team PLAYGROUND took over the production of the Education issue. They were my “substitute teachers," and you can see they did a lot more than just put on a movie for the class! A special “thank you” goes out to our Cortney Thekan for stepping up as editor in chief on this issue! Plus, I was elated to welcome Orlando art director and brand strategist Janessa Gursky, who brought a fresh perspective to the overall design and fashion story (page 33). I hope you like it!

As a new school year begins, we dove into all aspects of education. For the Leaders in Learning article (page 25), we reached out to women who are shaping the future of education in the Orlando area, including founders of progressive private and charter schools, officials who oversee our public schools, and leaders of local organizations like the Orlando Science Center and Orlando Together. For tips on tackling math homework with the kids, check out Add It Up: 25 Ways to Make Math Fun (page 20). Plus, we have some great ideas to share in Top 10 Central Florida Field Trips for Homeschoolers (page 16). We’ve also compiled a Special Needs Guide (page 42) to help families find local resources and services. Also, local mom, PLAYGROUND contributor and disabilities advocate Amy Nielsen shares Helpful Tools for Families of Children with Special Needs (page 40). As always, I hope you enjoy the new issue. Drop me an email to let me know your favorite article. The team at PLAYGROUND hopes your kiddos have a PLAYful new school year!

The Black Hammock | Oviedo | theblackhammock.com Living life on the edge is easy when alligator-infested waters are just miles from your backyard. Lake Jesup sits 20 miles north of Orlando in the heart of Seminole County and is home to the second-largest alligator population in the state of Florida (the Everglades holds strong at #1). Black Hammock Airboat Rides in Oviedo offers thrilling adventures along the lake. Throughout the tour, your guide will share interesting facts about the alligator population and why so many of them call Florida home. Black Hammock provides several different tour packages; some even include lunch at their lakefront restaurant. Gator sightings happen frequently, so keep your camera ready.

Saint Augustine | visitstaugustine.com Take a step back in time when you visit Saint Augustine! Considered the oldest city in the United States, this historic destination is filled with experiences sure to launch your homeschooler to 16th century Florida. You’ll feel as though you stepped through the portal of time as you stare upon the place where the Spanish voyager Juan Ponce De Léon once came ashore. In another unparalleled experience, walk down Martin Luther King Boulevard, where Dr. King marched during the Civil Rights movement, and pass by two homes he slept in when visiting the area. You don’t get much closer to time travel than a visit to Saint Augustine!

Bearadise | Myakka City | bearadiseranch.com Amid a forest-like enclosure about two hours west of Orlando sits Bearadise Ranch. The bears who call this camp home are living their best life, and why wouldn’t they be? They are famous! Since the 1940s, Bearadise bears have played in several Hollywood blockbusters and starred in multiple commercials. This unique opportunity creates an exciting learning experience for students to discover interesting facts about the bear species and the many dangers they face today.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Educational Center provides an in-depth learning experience that teaches visitors about the atrocities suffered by Jewish people during World War II. The museum opened in the 1980s because the Holocaust was not a part of the curriculum in Central Florida at that time. The recorded testimonies given by several Holocaust survivors provide perspective on their experience that students will find to be informative and moving.

Medieval Times | Kissimmee | medievaltimes.com As the drawbridge lowers and they walk through the castle doors, students will be immediately transported to a time long ago! Medieval Times is an engaging way to teach your child about how tournaments played a major role throughout the Dark Ages. The Medieval Times arena is set up as a battleground where knights compete on horseback while guests cheer them on. Separate from the castle is a chamber where weapons and other artifacts are on display. Chamber doors close once the show starts, so be sure to give yourself extra time to visit.

Two Tails Ranch | Williston | allaboutelephants.com Did you know the elephant’s closest living relative is a manatee? And just like their cousins, elephants are at risk of extinction? Thanks to the owners of Two Tail Ranch, who are bringing awareness to the community, we learned many interesting facts about these fascinating creatures. Hour-long educational tours are offered daily, so you too can learn about things like why elephants sway side to side for nearly 24 hours a day or how you can help protect elephants from extinction. In addition to the tour, the ranch offers three more options to enhance your learning experience: a photo-op, a feeding or even a ride!

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour | Winter Park | scenicboattours.com There are so many reasons to love Winter Park, and here is another one: a delightfully informative boat ride through the city. The waters of Lake Osceola create an off-thebeaten path experience for students to enjoy a unique and truly interesting perspective of Winter Park’s lush history. Your child will pass under the oldest oak tree in Winter Park while learning what the Spanish moss hanging low from its branches was used for in the 1800s. During your tour, you will also pass many mansions owned by celebrities who visit our theme parks annually. Another bonus: an up-close look the former home of America’s favorite neighbor — Mr. Rogers!

Crystal River Manatee Tours | Crystal River plantationoncrystalriver.com Over 400 West Indian manatees migrate to Florida each year. Plantation on Crystal River offers a variety of educational tours that allow visitors an up-close experience with Florida’s gentle giants. Learn what attracts these massive mammals to our rivers and why they’re endangered. Students will also learn how to help protect Florida’s manatees. PLAY Tip: The spring water is chilly year-round, so a wetsuit is highly recommended.

Showcase of Citrus | Clermont showcaseofcitrus.com Who wouldn’t want to ride in the world’s largest monster truck and tour one of Central Florida’s largest orange groves? At Showcase of Citrus in Clermont, expect to learn everything there is to know about Florida’s oranges and even pick a few to bring home. Explore the gem mine, which teaches students about science and geology, or head to the petting farm and interact with the animals.

To Make Math Fun

Does your child suddenly get a stomachache the day of a math test? Maybe your child declares “I hate math!” or groans that they will “never use long division in real life.” If any of this sounds familiar, there’s good news. Recent research shows that despite feeling discouraged, most students can succeed at high levels in math. Research also shows that students would like math more if they understood how it applies to their own life.

Dr. Barbara Jenkins Superintendent, Orange County Public Schools Dr. Jenkins has been superintendent for Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) since 2012 and has been dedicated to serving the needs of students for 35 years. In 2017, she received a presidential appointment as a director of the National Board of Education Sciences and was named Florida Superintendent of the Year.

“OCPS offers learning environments for every type of student, including magnet programs, dual-language programs, personalized learning, virtual school, blended learning and dual enrollment at local colleges and universities. This past year, we launched the Orlando Gifted Academy that provides opportunities for gifted learners to pursue their interests and tap into their talents. Middle and high school students have the opportunity to take 37 different industry certifications at the secondary level, and high school and adult students are offered 97 different industry certifications in postsecondary programs through Orange Technical College. Also, several school-to-work programs help students gain workplace experience while gaining academic credits, such as the ESE transition school, Simon Youth Academy, Universal Education Center and Project Compass.

JoAnn Newman

CEO, Orlando Science Center

Ms. Newman joined the Orlando Science Center (OSC) in 2003 and has been the CEO since 2009. She is dedicated to guiding OSC as a strong community partner for informal science education, family engagement and workforce development.

What is the biggest change you’d like to see happen in education, and how do you believe that change could be implemented at the Orlando Science Center?

“In a world where information is at everyone’s fingertips, it is essential that children are taught problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills. Orlando Science Center is the perfect location to hone these skills. We provide learners with opportunities to apply real-world experience and content knowledge to science phenomena, engineering, etc. Our environment provides immersive, authentic opportunities to engage with complex problems or hard-tounderstand concepts in meaningful ways. The way we teach empowers our youth and provides them agency over their own learning.”

Dr. Mikulka, M.D., is a boardcertified psychiatrist and founder of Walden Community School (waldencommunityschool.com). Her unique interest in education and years of extensive research and teaching experience led Dr. Mikulka to establish Walden Community School in 2002.

What types of nontraditional learning opportunities does Walden Community School offer to students?

“Our student-centered philosophy focuses on teaching to the whole child by addressing social, emotional and academic needs. By developing and implementing an integrated curriculum, Walden facilitates real-life learning. We teach for understanding and use authentic assessments rather than traditional grading to promote mastery and growth mindset. In our noncompetitive learning environment, we encourage taking academic risks where mistakes become an integral part of learning.

She is program coordinator of the University of Central Florida's education doctorate in curriculum and instruction and is a professor of educational psychology in the Department of Learning Sciences and Educational Research.

What types of nontraditional learning opportunities does Galileo School offer to students?

“Galileo School offers a wide variety of nontraditional learning opportunities for our students. All of our students, in grades K-8, get the opportunity to choose enrichment activities via Creative Productivity (CP) classes. Students choose CP classes based on their interests from a long list of offerings (through a survey given to each student). In the elementary grades, students go to CP classes for two weeks at a time, several times during a quarter. They may learn about things like robotics, gardening, sewing, comic book illustration, origami, miming, debate, etc. Middle schoolers choose quarterly CP classes that are also generated from their interests.

Karen Almond

School Board Vice-Chairman, Seminole County Public Schools Ms. Almond was first elected to serve as a Seminole County School Board member in 2010 and is currently in her third term. She has been a community and education advocate for more than 25 years.

What types of nontraditional learning opportunities does Seminole County offer to students?

“Through our ePathways initiative, we offer students flexible scheduling to meet their needs. A student can take a virtual class off campus, along with taking classes on a traditional campus. With the help of Mrs. Jobs (wife of Steve Jobs) and a $1,000,000 grant, we started PSI High a few years ago. PSI High is our Problem-Solving Incubator. Students reach out to the community to partner and solve real-world problems. It’s an awesome opportunity for our students and the community. A true win-win.”

Dr. Tina Calderone

School Board Chairman, Seminole County Public Schools Dr. Calderone has served on the Seminole County School Board since 2010 and is currently the chairperson. She has worked in the fields of business and education since graduating with her first education degree in 1980.

What is the biggest change you’d like to seehappen in education, and how do you believethat change could be implemented?

“My hope is for adequate funding from the state and federal level to allow us to keep high-quality teachers in the profession and lure technically skilled instructors from the private sector to teach in our vocational classrooms. Additionally, I would hope the State of Florida would consider our Sunshine Solution … wherein we could replace the state FSA exams with nationally normed tests that match our standards such as the SAT or ACT to measure student success. This could be easily implemented with less time on testing, more time for instruction and quicker turnaround with scores. It is the fiscally conservative and educationally sound thing to do. Our students could also use these scores for their college applications not one university asks for an FSA score.” We want to thank these exceptional women for their ongoing commitment to providing outstanding learning opportunities for the children of Central Florida. Helpful Tools for Families of Children with Special Needs Words by Amy Nielsen

When you have a child with a disability, navigating the world can often be challenging and overwhelming. These tools can help.

40 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sept 2019

As the mother of a child with autism, I am always on the lookout for the best resources available for families of children with disabilities. These free tools help families connect with the service providers they need.

The Family Café | familycafe.net Each June, Orlando hosts the largest cross-disability conference in the state. The Family Café draws over 10,000 disabled attendees and their families. This three-day event consists of engaging keynote speakers, 200+ information sessions, 100+ exhibitors as well as The Governor’s Annual Summit on Disabilities. This family event also includes a sensory room, a wheelchair-friendly obstacle course and live entertainment. Not only is this event a place to find resources and services, it’s also a place to find compassion, acceptance and joy. Next year’s event will be June 5–7, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando. Registration opens February 14. Admission and parking are free; apply for financial assistance for hotel accommodations by April 15.

Early Steps of Central Florida | floridahealth.gov Early Steps is one of the first places I point families with young children who have been diagnosed with a developmental disability or who are at risk of having a developmental disability. Early Steps is Florida’s early intervention system and offers free services to infant and toddlers (birth to 36 months). In an early intervention screening, children are assessed in the following developmental domains: physical, cognitive, communication, social-emotional and adaptive. Based on the results, the child receives an Individualized Family Support Plan (IFSP) that addresses the unique services they may need, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy or behavior therapy. These services are then provided within their community at no charge. Research shows the earlier a child receives services for developmental delays, the better the outcome. Early Steps is the perfect place to start.

keyword. They also have an online calendar of local events as well as a blog that often highlights community resources. Bright Feats truly lives up to its motto: Connecting Families with the Resources They Need.

Florida Navigator Tool | navigator.apd.myflorida.com The Florida Navigator Tool was created by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). It is a web-based resource that allows the user to instantly search multiple government agencies by the services they offer. An easy-to-use menu allows the user to select services by life stages (such as “Early Years” or “School Years”) and by services (such as “Medical Care” or “Respite”). The search results provide information such as the program name, eligibility requirements, program cost (if any), a direct link to the agency’s website and telephone number. Another great feature is the ability to connect with your local Family Care Council directly through the website for local support.

Community Resource Directory resourcedirectory.apd.myflorida.com/resourcedirectory

The Community Resource Directory, also created by the APD, is an online database of over 8,000 resources for the special needs community searchable by location, disability and need (such as “Dental Care” or “Behavioral Health Services”). The search results provide information such as the resource name, location, age range served and disabilities served. The sidebars of this user-friendly site offer information such as disaster preparedness and navigating theme parks for those with disabilities, making it a valuable tool for Central Floridians.

Big Abilities | bigabilities.com One final resource I’d like to point out is my blog. At BigAbilities.com, my goal is to focus on the strengths of children with special needs in addition to their struggles. If you have a child with special needs, I welcome you to share your child’s story and highlight their “big abilities” on the “Their Stories” page.

Bright Feats | brightfeats.com Bright Feats, founded by parents of children with special needs, is a biannual publication and online directory of hundreds of resources. Their website is a directory of providers searchable by location, common categories (such as “Support Groups” and “Early Childhood”) and

PLAY ACTIVITIES FOR DINO-CRAZED KIDS Words by Tiffany Doerr Guerzon

HATCHING DINOSAUR EGGS

DIY DINO EXCAVATION

> Supplies (per egg): • ½ cup baking soda • 2 tbsp food-grade powdered citric acid (found in the canning supplies section of most grocery stores) • 1 - 2 tsp canola oil • Small plastic dinosaur toys • Liquid food coloring • Small bowl (for mixing) • Large bowl (for hatching)

> Supplies:

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make the dough. • Put baking soda in a bowl and add food coloring. Mix and knead the color in with your fingers until the color is distributed. This will color your fingers, but it washes off.

• Add citric acid and mix in with spoon. • Add 1 tsp oil and work it into the dough with your fingers.

• At this point, the dough will be dry and crumbly. Add more oil, one teaspoon at a time until the dough holds together and can be molded into a ball. 2. Put the dinos in the egg. Scoop half of the dough in the palm of one hand and then press a dino into it. Cover the dino with the rest of the dough and squeeze the dough in both hands until it sticks together. Notice that the dough is cold to the touch. The baking soda and citric acid react in an endothermic reaction, absorbing heat from the surrounding environment. 3. Hatch your dino egg! Fill a large bowl with water. Drop in egg and watch the fizzing begin! All the dough will dissolve, leaving the baby dinosaur behind. Little paleontologists will be amazed!

TIFFANY DOERR GUERZON writes about parenting and family life. As a mother of three, she finds that writing and sharing the humor of everyday parenting is a great stress reliever.

46 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sep 2019

• Toy dino skeletons or other artifacts (like shells or interesting rocks) • Cornstarch, at least 1 cup • Water, about 2 cups • Container large enough to bury the dino INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Choose a container that is just big enough to contain the dino but with enough to bury your dino completely. A small bowl or a 3-cup storage container works well. 2. Add cornstarch to your container and slowly pour the cool water over the cornstarch, mixing constantly with a fork. You’ll want the mixture to be about the consistency of pudding. If the mixture is thick and difficult to mix, add more water. If the mixture is too thin, add more cornstarch. You may need to add more solution depending on the size of your container. Use two parts water to one part cornstarch. Once you have enough solution, put the dino in and push down so that it is no longer visible. 3. Allow to dry for 1-2 days. When the surface starts to crack, unmold the cornstarch solid onto a plate or baking dish to catch all of the debris when the dino is chipped out. You may need additional dry time if the surface feels damp to the touch. 4. When your fossil is dry, let your junior archeologists dig out the dino. Use butter knives or spoons to chip away at the surface and use dry paint brushes to brush off the bones while excavating.

PLAY SEE/SAW

Kids’ Chess Tournament Checkmate! PLAYGROUND Magazine hosted the Kids’ Chess Tournament as part of our Summer of PLAY family event series at Winter Park Village, sponsored by AdventHealth for Children. Board One Chess Academy ran the tournament in a beautiful outdoor setting while parents relaxed at the Hangry Bison. Players competed for trophies and prizes, including gift cards to Winter Park Village. All players received a free Regal Cinemas movie ticket and a $5 gift card to Menchie’s! We would like to thank Winter Park Village and Board One Chess Academy for partnering with us to produce this V.I.P. experience for local families.
