Task Force Outcomes

Problem: Uninvolved student-athletes unfairly bear the brunt of penalties

Recommendation:

No forfeits for certification error

Forfeits only required if student was academically ineligible

Involved student-athlete bears too much of the penalty

Recommendation:

Ineligible student sits out 1 game for each game played in

Coach withheld if student was eligible but for a certification error

School has limited opportunity to advocate for itself

Recommendation: • Provide hearing opportunity if probation is being considered

Clarify assigning suspension for additional penalty while on probation is at committee’s discretion

Public nature of probation is damaging

Recommendation:

Provide hearing opportunity if probation is being considered

Change public nature of probation to be at committee’s discretion

Lack of education of coaches and staff is underlying cause

Recommendation: • Mandatory rules education for all coaches and staff: • Comprehensive rules ed upon initial appointment • Brief annual refresher for key points and updates

Recommendation:

Replace “recommendation” with “conference statement” for violations
