New Character in Action program excites students
Since the start of Character in Action students have implemented valuable character traits by participating in community service projects, completing 781 service hours out of the 8,000 goal. The goal for each person is to complete a total of five hours by the end of the school year. “It was difficult as an administrator trying to get different organizations to come up with Character Ed,” assistant principal Beth Schmidt said. “They came up with the idea of Character in Action and felt it was a much more powerful way to actually do those 10 traits.” Elizabeth Graber’s class took the lead with 45 hours of community service. Debra Cox’s class completed 18 hours and Suzanne McKaig’s class completed 16 hours. “It’s something the teachers can get involved in with the students. In kindergarten you start learning about those different values and we’ve defined them enough for you,” committe member Jenny Meirowsky said. “It’s time to do something about it and put it into action. I think that’s way more powerful than a powerpoint.”n

Girls take second place at state golf tournament
The girls golf ended the season with six tournament wins and placing second at state behind Topeka Washburn Rural. Senior Taelyn Entriken took third place overall shooting a 75 finishing along with the other seniors on the team. “Taelyn Entriken, Lauren Copp, and Ashley Reiswig capped off a great career,” coach Ben Harlow said. It was a slow start for the girls but they were able to come together and take second place. “This team really found themselves midway,” Harlow said. “High school golf in Kansas is a one day tournament, it should be a two-day tournament, so you just got to show up and compete your very best that day.” As for next year, Harlow is excited to see what the team can do. “We have Brooke Johanson and Brit-

Senior boys win Dig Pink
Once a year the girls volleyball team hosts two rounds of Dig Pink volleyball. The tournament raises money for the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer awareness. This year the junior and senior boys played their first round Oct. 23 and with the seniors winning, they played a second round against staff during EnCor Oct. 24 to raise more money. “This year we raised 283, dollars and that’s super great compared to past years,” volleyball coach Betsy Manning said. Manning is the girls varsity volleyball coach so she knew what she was doing during the game, unlike some of the other inexperienced teachers. “The boys ended up winning the game, but we’re old so it’s OK,” Manning said. For the past three years students have come to enjoy the teams battle it out on the court. “I was surprised because I thought they were going to be a lot better than they were, but it was still really fun,” senior and player Brady Hoover said.n

Kay Club organizes blood drive to help save lives
Kay Club sponsored a blood drive by Red Cross and had them bring the Bloodmobile Oct. 24 for students to get the chance to donate blood. “Students feel proud for giving blood and this year more students have really stepped up and volunteered very fast,” KAY Club adviser Suzanne McKaig said. “The whole thing has been very positive.” “Some students gave blood with no problem,” junior Mariah Rey said. “Others had a different experience.” “This was my very first time giving blood. I had a very bad reaction, and I turned super white. The nurse couldn’t
find my vein, so she started moving the needle to find it. She had to put it in three times. I ended up only being able to give not even half of what they needed. It was bad.” Red Cross received 23 units of bloodfrom 30 donors. Every donation saves three lives.n

Injury leaves Baldwin out for rest of football, wrestling seasons
A torn ACL and meniscus has senior football player and wrestler Kyle Baldwin out for the fall and winter seasons. Baldwin was injured in the game against Garden City Oct. 18. “I went down and I heard it pop,” Baldwin said. “I thought I dislocated my knee, and so I reached down and grabbed it, and I felt that it wasn’t popped out or anything.” Baldwin went to the sidelines to be looked at a little more closely. “They just told me that I probably tore my ACL,” Baldwin said. “I lost it.” The injury has affected Baldwin immensely, emotionally and physically. “It’s affected me more emotionally I would say because I can’t wrestle,” Baldwin said. “I’ve wrestled for about 14 years and missing senior year sucks.” Though he will not wrestle or play football again this year, Baldwin focuses on the positive side. “I’ve gotten pretty used to [crutches],” Baldwin said. “I can do some cool tricks on them now.”n

Football moves to Class 5A S
tudents were taken by surprise by the announcement that Maize will play Maize South in football next year, moving from Class 6A to 5A . “With the student count I think the change is right,” varsity football player Connor Lungwitz said. “But I do wish the student count was higher so we could be a 6A school.” Every year schools turn in a student count to the KSHAA. 6A and 5A classes have 32 schools in each while 4A has 64 schools. “Even though we are changing classes, our league will not change,” football coach Gary Guzman said. “We are still
By Katie McLachlan
part of the AVCTL league, meaning we will still play Derby, Haysville-Campus, Hutchinson, Newton, Salina Central and Salina South in league competitions.” Maize’s student count has fallen since the opening of South in 2009. Maize was 12 students away from meeting the 6A qualifications. Football classifications are set every two years. The current 6A classification for Maize was decided in 2011. “It doesn’t really affect students and student-athletes that much,” district athletic director Marc Haught said. “Athletes will play a different set of
schools, but it will not affect them in other ways.” Students have expressed excitement via Twitter about a rivalry game between Maize and Maize South because the class change makes both schools 5A. The question was answered October 8 when KSHAA announced that the two schools would be in the same division next season. Bishop Carroll and Valley Center are also in the district. “I’m looking forward to playing my friends,” Lungwitz said. “But I think I’m most excited to start the rivalry between the schools.”n

nternet is back up at Maize after being down for the better part of two weeks in October. Superintendent Doug Powers said the district’s network was hacked, causing what is called a broadcast storm. The attack bombards with requests to connect, overwhelming the system and shutting it down. District officials were not immediately aware that the glitch was an attack. While the district hasn’t revealed the source of the attack, multiple sources with knowledge said the attack
Devan Horning
By Devan Horning came from a Maize South student. The issue is still under investigation. “We have identified the cause of the problem, have applied a temporary fix that has disabled some of our district functionality and have ordered a permanent solution,” Powers said during the outage. Powers said the solution has been a very involved process for the technology department and cyber security experts from an outside vender hired by the district. Details of the fix are not being shared to avoid an attempt of future
attacks. “Advertising what is being done to solve these problems, people intending to harm our system may do research to try and attack again,” Powers said. The solution is expensive, as are the consultants and downtime, but students and staff are very dependant on online services. Many students keep scholwork on online services like Google Docs where their files are created and saved, making them completely unavailable to students without internet. n

Breakfast food warms the soul and easily works for any meal of the day. Play’s Lauren Debes reviewed several breakfast places on the west side and found these to be the best.
Village Inn
Egg Crate Cafe
Located on Central and Ridge, Village Inn is a classic choice for a hearty breakfast. The modern decor and recent renovations really improve the overall experience. Serving sizes are easily adjustable and always fair with the price. Rise and Shine: The buttermilk pancakes make a mouth water. The fluffy interior and rich syrup do not disappoint. When craving some major comfort food, Village Inn raises the bar.
Located on Central and Tyler, this little restaurant truly creates a small-town feel. With homemade taste and wonderful service, nothing warms you up in the morning like Egg Crate. Fresh and Fine: One recommended item would be the biscuits and gravy. The fluffy biscuits perfectly hold the thick and flavorful gravy. Another suggestion is the fluffy omelette with savory bacon. With charming decor and friendly service, Egg Crate is a locally-owned gem.
Scents of the season By Kalee Betzen Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin The best-selling fall fragrance, a scent made up of fresh pumpkin, zesty fall spices and a hint of vanilla.
Pumpkin Caramel Latte The pumpkin caramel latte smells like a rich, warm fall-inspired drinks sold at coffee shops.
Pumpkin Cupcake A sweet mix of baked pumpkin cupcake and butter cream frosting, this scent is sure to please anyone with a sweet tooth.
Throughout the year, seasons come and go — as do the scents commonly associated with them. These scents set the tone for the fall and winter seasons. These seasons in particular are most often associated with warm and rich aromas. The smell of crisp autumn leaves, cinnamon, pumpkins and baked goods remind one of the changing seasons and upcoming holidays. This is the most popular time of year to buy scented goods like candles, body wash and lotion at Bath and Body Works, a sales associate said. Seasonal scents offered for a limited time are in high demand and sell quickly. From musky to sweet, there’s a variety of scents to please everyone. n
Vanilla Bean Noel A sweet blend of creamy vanilla, caramel and sugar cookie, this rich scent is perfect for the winter.
Twisted Peppermint A minty winter mix of sweet peppermint, sugar and vanilla butter cream is a top scent for the winter season.
Winter Candy Apple A cheerful mix of apple and rose petals with a hint of cinnamon and maple, Winter Candy Apple is a winter best-seller.

magine the typical super hero. An everyday person who goes above and beyond to help everyone else. A person who is selfless and willing to do anything for the good of another. They walk among ordinary people as if they are no different. Hollywood heroes tend to wear capes, masks, and costumes. However, not every hero wears these things; some wear camouflage and combat boots. Some heroes even walk among us in the halls of Maize. For many, the military offers great opportunities to provide education, insurance and world travels. For others, serving the country they love is all the incentive they need. Senior Josh Benavides enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the summer. “It’s something that changes your life forever,” he said. Although it is a big, life-altering decision, Benavides’ parents support him. “My older brother is in the Air Force, they’re really supportive of me and want me to do what I think is best for

myself.” To prepare for his upcoming service, Benavides traveled to Oklahoma City to take medical exams and his Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. The ASVAB is a test given by the military to determine whether people are qualified for enlistment. Benavides is currently in the delayed entry program on the list, waiting to be shipped to training July 2014. When he is finished serving, Benavides says he may finish school or find a job right away. “I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.” Clayton Norrod, senior, is considering joining the Marines. “It seems like the right fit for me,” Norrod said. “They have the right mindset.” Both of Norrod’s grandfathers served in the military. “My grandfather helps me prepare by explaining orders.” Norrod also said he has prepared by keeping his body in shape through
exercising and playing football. “It worries my mom, but my dad knows it’s my life and I can make this decision on my own.” Although he hasn’t officially enlisted, Norrod thinks the military is a good option. But he is in no rush to enlist. “I want to play football and I have some questions that still need answered. I can enlist any time.” Senior Dallas Barnes has chosen a different route by enlisting in the Army. “I chose the Army because I wanted to switch it up, everyone else in my family is in the Navy and the Marine Corps,” Barnes said. Because his family has served in the military as well, they support his decision. “I have wanted to join the military ever since I was a little kid,” he said. Although the military can be scary for some, Barnes says he doesn’t really have any fears. He will attend basic training in Fort Benning, Ga. next year. Senior Billie Selichnow’s heart has been set on the United States Marine

Corps Band since the end of last year. “At first I had the infantry dream like everyone else.” For about two years, Seilchnow has had a dream of joining a professional band. Ever since she saw the Marine Corps Band, she was eager to join as a trombone player. “It’s a very prestigious band.” Selichnow has been preparing since last year to achieve her dream by studying for her ASVAB and attending training. “At first I was scared of the physical training, but I attend
training on Thursdays and it helps you get better.” Because Selichnow isn’t 18 yet, she hasn’t enlisted. However, Selichnow’s parents are hesitant for her to join the Marines and would rather see her attend college. “They’re like usual parents, they’re scared for me to go. My dad says college is more important.” Selichnow plans to enlist when she turns 18 at the end of this year. n

veryone is kind of lame,” senior Emma Driskill said. “Not in a bad way, just in a boring way. Who wants to be boring?” According to Mashable.com, fashion is a general term for a popular style or practice. Male or female, expressing who you are comes from what you wear, whether it be revealing and provocative, or chaste. Celebrities are idols to some teens and they work hard to acquire the characteristics that celebrities have. What you wear gives people a first impression of who you are and how you feel about yourself. In Driskill’s opinion, if you dress well you feel well. She has been displaying unique style as long as she could freely choose her outfits. She says she is addicted to online shopping, mostly from Urban Outfitters, Forever 21 and Pac Sun. She gets asked how she curls her hair, how she decides on an outfit and where she gets her clothes, but besides that, she does not get much feedback. “I’ve gone to school with these kids for 13 years; they’re

used to my shenanigans,” Driskill said. Senior Aaron Shaw’s feelings are similar to Driskill’s. He said he thinks most people’s style is too plain; he prefers not to be like those around him. Shaw has rewinded his style back to the ‘80s. His wardrobe consists of multiple vintage crewnecks, parachute pants, crazy sweaters, and wind breakers. “My style describes who I am, because I’m a weirdo,” Shaw said. Shaw said he gets more strange looks than comments from his peers. He shops mostly at Goodwill and thrift shops, spending around $20 monthly, if that. Shaw has two older brothers so he already has a lot of clothes and hand-medowns. “I just kind of throw my outfits together,” Shaw said. “I don’t know much about style.” Junior Angelina Wiglesworth's style has taken a different twist than others. Comments from people are usually on opposite ends of the spectrum; cute or terrifying.

“I tend to wear things aesthetically pleasing [to me], or darker than usual,” she said. Her inspirations come from growing up with Tim Burton (a film director for movies with a dark feel to them) and Rob Zombie (a musician in the band White Zombie). She dresses differently than most but she likes to express what she enjoys. Most of her clothing is related to comics by Invader Zim. These musicians or comics have given her a reason to pursue a talent in art. Junior Nicole Grimes uses her style to express her different and unique personality. She shops at Alter Ego in NewMarket Square and the “normal” shopping stores but picks out things that are not usually the most purchased. Her favorite accessory are statement necklaces, which are pieces that allow someone to step out of the mundane and define themselves. She said she gets asked a lot why she dresses up every day and says some call her weird. “I see things on the internet, magazines or movies and just make [them] my own,” Grimes said. “I like dressing the way I do, it expresses style and personality.” Some teens don’t follow the same trends that are being thrown around as being “in.” Decades pass and new things are being labeled as trendy. While most teens shop at locally admired stores, others shop to find more unusual attire. Thrifting is entertaining to these people because it is cheap and they can find things that no one else has, giving them a way to express their individuality. n

Teens have different reasons for spending money on clothes and accessories
By Gabby Hermes
F
ashion fads go from being in one day to out the very next. So how do students keep up? According to fashion guide Style Indeed, teens face both positive and negative effects from the influence of the fashion industry. Some positive effects are that youth use fashion to attract like-minded friends and to bond with each other, teens are able to express themselves and their individuality. Also, it gives teens a sense of control in their own lives. But there are negatives to consider. Some styles tend to cause self harm because the fashion world portrays women with figures and skin complexions that are basically impossible to achieve. Style Indeed says that as a result, some people in turn are lessening their intake on food. The biggest negative impacts are that people criticize others for their fashion choices and those who aren’t dressed to the standards of their peers face their ridicule. Also, trends come and go meaning students must spend more money. For some, fashion means spending a lot of money. They feel that the best way to survive in the modern world is by following the changing fashion trends. Fashion is a huge industry and its effects on society are massive. Psychologically and economically fashion has created great

negative impacts on the lives of people, espeically teens. Teenagers, according to Teenage Research Unlimited, spend up to $103 a week on clothes. This adds up to a yearly total of $5,356. Senior Claire Beard’s favorite clothing item is her combat boots that she got online. Beard says she shops most at Forever 21 and PacSun. “I like being my own person and dressing differently,” Beard said. Beard doesn’t know how much she spends monthly on clothes, saying it depends on how much her paycheck is. “I have a bad habit of going somewhere and not being able to buy just one thing,” Beard said. Beard said she doesn’t think it is important to dress nicely, but she said that if that is who you are then so be it because everyone is different. Senior Tyler Stratton believes it is important to look and dress nicely for good first impressions. “I always like to give a good first impression for the ladies,” Stratton said. “I spend about $500 monthly on clothes.” Stratton spends that money because he loves clothes and new outfits. He says he shops most at Polo and Ralph Lauren. His favorite jeans are his Rock Revivals that he

bought at Buckle. Sophomore Haylee Carpenter has “style” but says she only spends around $30 monthly on clothes. “I shop at Goodwill, Charlotte Russe and mainly just thrift shops,” Carpenter said. “I like to look nice and it’s just my style.” Carpenter began modeling about a year ago and was inspired by celebrities that present themselves well in public, so she did the same. “My favorite thing I own is probably my Steve Madden pumps from Dillards,” Carpenter said. “They’re nude, so they go with pretty much everything.” Carpenter believes it is important to look nice when doing something professional, but she doesn’t feel the need to dress up all the time. Senior Emily Gaston spends more money monthly than Carpenter does, but she also thrift shops. “I shop mainly at Charlotte Russe and a lot at Uptown Cheapskate, but I also share clothes with my sisters,” Gaston said. Gaston believes some name-brand clothes aren’t worth the money. “I spent more money on Miss Me’s than what they are actually worth,” Gaston said. “You’re basically paying for the
name.” Gaston says that in school she isn’t as concerned about how she dresses as she is outside of school. Senior Emily Griggs’ outlook is this: If you think it’s cute, then do it. Who cares what others think? Griggs says she spends $200 to $300 monthly on clothes because she gets her shopping gene from her mom. Griggs also says that she doesn’t like to wear what others all wear and likes to have plenty of options. “I don’t dress up for anyone but myself,” Griggs said. “I like to look cute.” Griggs believes the reason kids think that having expensive clothes makes them “cool” is because of the pressure to fit in in high school. “In middle school I wore jeans and a sweatshirt all the time, and when I got into high school that changed,” Griggs said. “I remember hanging out with older girls and them asking if that was really what I was going to wear to go out and telling me it would be a good idea to change my clothes.” Griggs’ philosophy is no matter how you dress you’ll fit in. There’s always people dressed differently; there’s always people like you. “The clothes don’t make you, you make the clothes,” she said. “Do you. Don’t try to be someone else.” n

t took me a minute to completely understand what my mom was telling me. I expected it, just not this soon. “Katie. Wake up. We need to go to Grandma’s,” my mother repeated over and over. I looked at my mom, already knowing what had happened. I asked her the question I knew I didn’t want the answer to. “Why?” The words came from her mouth, and my heart shattered. My grandpa, Terry McLachlan, had died. As I cried, I recalled the many memories I had shared with him. He took me on many adventures to Colorado, Chicago and Michigan. We had countless long talks about life, boys, school and even politics, considering he was a state representative. We had a very close bond, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. But now he was gone. I somehow found a way to gain my composure and get ready to go. As I made my way to my grandparent’s house, I thought about the past few years and how quickly everything happened. It started out as lung cancer. Then bone cancer. The bone cancer hit his ribs on one side and then the other. Next was the blood clot in his neck that appeared when the doctors tried to put a port in his chest. Not only did the cancer take a toll on him, but so did the treatments. He slept a lot and got worn out quickly. NovemberPlay | maizenews.com

His skin became raw and bright red due to radiation burn. That never stopped him from being at all my soccer games, my cousin’s races and birthday parties. One month. That is how quickly and drastically his mood, appearance and health changed. I broke down when I received the news that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer. I didn’t know what this would mean for his future. I know that your brain controls your body, so it can’t mean anything good. When my grandma told me, upsetting thoughts bounced around my head as the tears fell to the floor. I thought this was it. But over time, with his good spirit I began to look up and think that maybe, just maybe, things would be OK. It wasn’t more than two weeks later he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I didn’t know how severe it, was until I saw the look on my parents faces. I was worried. I continually asked God how long I would have my grandpa in my life. My grandpa had been in the hospital for just a short time following the phone call. I remember going to visit him on a Wednesday. As my father and I walked into his room, we were greeted with his infamous big smile. As we sat there and talked, it reached a moment of silence. My grandpa looked at me. “Katie, do you realize what is actually going on here?” I said I had an idea but I wasn’t for sure. “I’m dying.” The words cut like knives. He couldn’t
die. He just couldn’t. He’s my hero and my grandpa. He couldn’t die. When he left the hospital he was placed on hospice to make him as comfortable as possible. He became weaker and weaker. He was now in a wheelchair, had no appetite and didn’t crack jokes and smile as much as he had once before. It was all taking a toll on him very quickly. But the one memory that was most painful was the one from the night before he died. My dad had needed to unload some dirt for my grandparents’ garden, so I tagged along. My grandma and I sat inside by their bedroom where my grandpa was and struck up conversation about our days. It was too hard to focus on the conversation though. You could hear the pain he was in as he tried to breath. In mid-conversation, my voice trailed off. I was listening to the pain he was in. My grandma told me I could go in and see him. But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t take seeing him in the condition he was in. That wasn’t the grandpa I knew in that room anymore. So I left that night without talking to him. He died the next morning. That was my last chance to tell him how much I loved him and how brave and strong he was and how he was my hero. I didn’t take it. I missed my chance to even kiss his forehead and tell him I loved him. And I knew from that point forward, nothing would ever be the same. n

From newsrooms to classrooms
W
By Béle Benard for the Play editorial board
ithin the next four years, most high school students will enter the real world. This means that we will soon have to deal with whatever life throws at us on our own. We will be faced with tough decisions that we’ll need to make wisely. It is important that everyone, including teenagers, pays attention to the news to keep up with the world around them. Not only high schoolers, but also adults, seem to avoid the news with deliberation. Most people believe that as long as they aren’t affected directly, paying attention to the news isn’t worth taking the time to do. It seems that one of the few things that captures the attention of the American people is a catastrophic event or things of that caliber. Regardless of where the problem lies, we all should be attentive and receptive — open eyes and listening ears are keys to establishing a solid foundation in understanding the world around us. Without that foundation, we can’t make informed decisions or fix the problems we face. Being aware of the day’s news comes hand-in-hand with political involvement; it is impossible to make wise decisions at the voting booth without knowing what candidates are up to, or trusting that everything they will tell you is true. Keeping up with media allows us to decide for ourselves how we feel
about a certain issue. A teenager who is simply his parents’ parrot isn’t a smart one. Nobody wants to be that kid in class who gets sideways glances when he makes a stupid comment about politics because he refuses to acknowledge the other side of an issue. It is important that we take the time to learn what is really going on around us, that we learn the truth about candidates, leaders and issues. That said, we need to make sure our news sources are giving us all sides of the story, not just the side we agree with. News, in a sense, desensitizes us. It isn’t always pleasant, and it prepares us for Murphy’s law: what can go wrong, will. If we pay attention to the news, we’re informed of what’s going on and can be quicker to react and respond in the manner needed. This will be especially important when we’re adults and have children of our own. It will be vital that we’re aware of issues around not only the nation, but also the world. Those issues won’t be affecting only us — they’ll be affecting our children as well. It takes initiative and effort to take the time to be informed with news. As we grow older, being informed will become more and more important to build ourselves into strong adults. n maizenews.com | NovemberPlay

Sydney Roy plans to leave Maize after fall semester to join Friends University
I
By Lauren Debes
t’s a rarity in Maize for student athletes to graduate at semester — let alone begin competing in college that same school year. The majority of collegiate schools do not consider athletes graduated until May, making them unable to play. However, Sydney Roy plans on leaving Maize at the end of this semester to compete at Friends University in the spring. Placing second at Lake Afton, fifth in Emporia and numerous other supreme finishes throughout her high school career, coach Skeeter Rankins said Roy is a major asset for both the strength and spirit of the teams. She will begin training for winter cross country in December and compete in the spring track season. Roy’s investment in Maize made her decision challenging, but one she felt necessary. “At first I was overwhelmed, everything will change for me. Then I got over the homesickness and became ready to move on. As much as I’ll miss everyone here, I know things will be even greater [at Friends],” Roy said. The option to begin competing so early at Friends pushed her toward a mid-year graduation. When visiting the university, Roy said she “instantly felt at home and comfortable with the program.” Although Roy expects difficulties from leaving her twin

sister and friends behind, the biggest challenge will come from leaving the activities she’s involed in at Maize, she said. As her decision solidified, a major obstacle arose: Telling her coach. “This was a big decision, yet this was the hardest thing to do — going to your coach and telling him, ‘Hey im not going to be here my final semester’ and I was really, really nervous about it,” Roy said. Although many advised her to wait until December to break the news, Roy viewed it as her responsibility to tell him early. Rankins spends an enormous amount of time with his athletes. The majority of his team competes in cross country and track; therefore, he is with them all year around. When Roy went to break the news, it was equally difficult for the coach and player. When asked about his reaction, Rankins sighed and carefully responded, “Well I think selfishly, as a distance coach who has coached her since she was a freshman, my initial reaction was a deflating disappointment. I wanted to coach her. On the flip side, it’s not about me.” Rankins and Roy agree their conversation was very positive and understanding. Roy said she left the meeting feeling supported on all levels. n

WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW
A
s the weather gets colder, winter sports are about to warm up for the 2013-14 seasons. Girls basketball The girls basketball team finished fourth at state last year and has its sights set high again after losing one senior. Junior Keiryn Swenson, who averaged 15.7 points per game last year, said another trip to state is within the team’s grasp. “I expect us to pick it up real fast,” Swenson said. “We really didn't lose anyone but one senior. We are suppose to be really good and our ceiling [is going] to be really high,” Swenson said. Wichita South, the defending Class 6A champion, is on the Eagles’ schedule and is expected to be the team’s biggest challenge this year. Boys basketball The boys team lost in substate last year and finished with an 8-13 record. Aaron Shaw, who averaged 6.5 points per game last season, looks for a league title this year.
By Cody Campbell “I expect us to win league, win substate, and go far in state,” he said. “We can’t turn the ball over and have to score more.” During the offseason, the Eagles worked together to develop a stronger connection. They start their season Dec. 6 at Emporia. Wrestling The Eagles have a good mix of newcomers and veterans to make up a lineup for coach Mike Schauer. Chipper Nance enters his senior year looking to place at state and bring a title to Eagle wrestling. “We’re always going be a good tournament team,” he said. “We have a lot of great wrestlers. The challenge is going be the heavyweight.” Nance joined the cross country team this year to work on his conditioning for this season. The squad will be without senior Kyle Baldwin, who injured his knee during football.
Boys swimming The team has lofty goals after finishing seventh at state last year. Kyle Allison placed 13th in the 200yard individual medley. He participates in club swimming and said that helps to keep him prepared for the season. “We need to try to come together more as a team rather than competing for ourselves,” Allison said. Returners also include sophomore Preston Barley and junior Christopher Clemons, who were on the state champion 200 freestyle relay team. Bowling Arianna Perez is the only returning player who qualified for state last season. She placed second. Even so, she has high expectations for the girls and boys teams. “I expect [our team] to win, and I want to help them win,” she said. Perez participated in nationals for bowling during the offseason. n For the latest updates on sports, check out maizenews.com maizenews.com | NovemberPlay

Eagles advance to playoffs Eagles win district and make the playoffs for the first time since 2009 By Justin Noble
T
he Eagles are in the football playoffs for the first time since 2009. Despite losing to Hutchinson 33-31 in the last game of the regular season, the Eagles are Class 6A-District 8 champions by virtue of a tiebreaker with Hutch and Garden City. White scored on a touchdown run with 10 seconds remaining that gave the Eagles the score they needed to win the tiebreaker. Hutchinson missed a field goal with no time remaining that would have knocked out the Eagles. “We were excited,” senior running back Chase White said. “I can’t explain the feeling.” White has played a huge part in the Eagles’ success. He has 20 touchdowns this season — 16 rushing and four receiving — to break the record of 14 he tied last season. Connor Lungwitz has put his name in the record book as well. He broke the career passing touchdown record of 29 and has tied the season passing touchdown record with 22. Though White and Lungwitz have had a lot of success, the whole team has been playing well this season. The Eagles are 7-2 and will start their playoff run at 7 p.m. tonight with a home game against Manhattan “It’s a whole team effort,” head coach Gary Guzman said. “Our entire coaching staff, the players they all made it happen.” The Eagles, who haven’t won a playoff game since 2006, credit team chemistry for a lot of their success. “I haven’t seen this kind of unity in a team in any of my years playing foot-

ball,” senior linebacker Clayton Norrod said. “We go together as one, and we really work together as a unit.” Guzman said the unity Norrod talked about is something that every coach wants in a team. “You really hope that they will come together and play as a team, and I really think that our group has done that,” Guzman said. While the stakes are high for the Eagles, White said the Eagles need to stay within themselves. “We just need to prepare and play our Senior Chase White is brought down by a Hutchinson defender.
