ALL IN TIME
I took my first ski run at the age of three. We were with good family friends and a tradition of staying in a local lodge and skiing together was started. I started to come to Winter Park on a bus from Denver and was part of the Eskimo Ski Club. Then there was the freestyle team and then I became a ski instructor. My family bought a condo so we wouldn’t have to drive back and forth so much. Ski weekends became another tradition. Summers were filled with hiking on the then vacant ski runs. When mountain biking started to become popular, I was right here, riding the local trails with my friends. More traditions.
THE NATIVE IN ME
There are sayings (and bumper stickers) that state, “You know you are a Coloradan if…”. Well, I fit most of the ifs. I have just about every bike one can have and I was a

ski bum. (Well, you never really lose the ski bum in you, so I guess I still am.) Another saying we have here is that you are only considered a local after living here for 20 years. I have hit that mark. My garage is filled with my toys, and I love and use them all. So when it comes to putting this guidebook together for our readers, I try to draw from my experiences. Being surrounded by those with whom I grew up skiing, biking, and roaming the hills that surround this beautiful valley always helps. I am able to ask my friends for their help when needed.
IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS This kind of longevity takes strong relationships. Any business requires healthy and good relationships. Otherwise, they won’t succeed. I feel the same about my business. I make it a point to have good relationships with those in the community, which I have for years. The more my team can find out about what our clients do in their business, the more ideas we can offer you, our reader. Making sure our information is accurate and up-to-date will ensure we are read and are used to help with your vacation. Some say print is dead, that “everyone uses the Internet.” But that’s so impersonal and not completely true. We know that our readers can research and get ideas from Google. So we try to give our ideas and perspectives. We love to do all the things we write about, so we write in a way that we would want to get the information. We work hard to develop a relationship, if only for these few pages, with you. We hear from so many of you thanking us for a certain bit of information or story, or you share your own story with us. We print more books each year. When we deliver the boxes of our books all over town, we are reminded that, in fact, print is not dead. (And we love it!) Visit our new blog-based website (oh dare I say, on the Internet!) for more ideas that we have to offer.

RockY Mountain NATIONAL PARK
stablished in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) protects 415 square miles of spectacular mountain scenery that encompasses 77 mountains of more than 12,000ft in elevation, as well as one of the most technically challenging 14,000ft peaks, Longs Peak. The park is home to 280 types of birds, including eagles and hawks, and 60 species of animals such as bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes, elk, mule deer, and moose. More than four million people visited Rocky in 2015, up 21 percent from the previous year, making it one of the busiest national parks in the United States. Total park acreage is 265,795, with 252,085 acres designated as wilderness, making it one of the largest national parks in the United States.
E
Entrance Fees On October 1, 2015, Rocky Mountain National Park increased entrance fees to fund maintenance and improvement projects. Please contact the park for more information. Fees and passes can be paid in U.S. currency by major credit or debit card, cash, or check. Trail Ridge Road Opened to the public in July 1932, the 48-mile long Trail Ridge Road, climbing to an elevation of 12,183ft at its highest point, connects Grand Lake and Estes Park. Approximately 12 miles of the drive is above timberline across tundra, making it the highest continuous paved road in the United States! Past the Grand Lake entrance, the road passes through scenic Kawuneeche Valley where moose munch greenery in the upper reaches of the Colorado River and grazing elk greet sunrise and sunset in many of the park’s forest-rimmed meadows. Trail Ridge Road then climbs through a series of switchbacks at a grade that doesn’t exceed seven percent. Stone-walled turnouts provide parking spaces for visitors to take in the expansive vistas of the Kawuneeche Valley. The road then crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass (10,759ft), where headwaters of the Colorado River flow west to Mexico and the headwaters of the Cache la Poudre River flow east to the Mississippi. From approximately mid-October to mid-May, snow closes Trail Ridge at the Colorado River Trailhead, about ten miles from the Grand Lake entrance. For overnight stays, park visitors must be in a designated campground site or a backcountry campsite reserved by a valid permit. Holzwarth Historic Site A preserved 1920s-era dude ranch nestled in the forest, Holzwarth Historic Site is located along Trail Ridge Road about seven miles north of Kawuneeche Visitor Center. (John Holzwarth erected the ranch buildings after Prohibition shut down his Denver saloon.) The lodge buildings are reached by a half-mile walk from the parking lot.

Timber Creek Campground Situated along the Colorado River in the Kawuneeche Valley eight miles north of the park entrance, the campground (8,900ft) has 98 sites, all on a first-come, first-served basis. $26/night while the water is turned on late-May through mid-September; $18/ night when the water is turned off. Cash or credit card. Ranger-led campfire programs in the amphitheater at Timber Creek during the summer. Tent camping as well as RV and trailer sites are available. Activities in the Park The park offers more than 350 miles of hiking trails, from leisurely strolls to technical climbing and hardcore backpacking options. For the adventuresome trout angler, the park has 147 lakes, many with fish. Pick up a brochure listing lakes with fish and park regulations at the visitor center. Bicycles are permitted on Trail Ridge Road; however, there is very little shoulder and, with steep drop-offs, it is not for the novice cyclist. Guided horseback trail tours are available on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park and leave from the stables in Grand Lake. Ranger-led activities and nature programs are offered at each of the park’s visitor centers, including Kawuneeche Visitor Center (kah-wu-NEE-chee, Arapaho for “valley of the coyote”) on the west side of the park near Grand Lake. Kawuneeche Visitor Center is one mile north of the village of Grand Lake on US Hwy 34 at the entrance to the park. Open daily year-round. Summer 8am-6pm, winter 8am4:30pm. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. List of all ranger talks and walks available at the visitor center. Warm Tip: The alpine tundra is windy and 20-30 degrees colder than Winter Park. Bring a warm jacket, sweatshirt, and sweater. The weather can change in a moment at this elevation. Every Kid in a Park Pass gives all kids in the fourth grade free access to Rocky Mountain National Park. The pass is valid for the duration of the fourth-grade school year through the following summer (September-August). It is available at www.everykidinapark.gov.
The Alpine Visitor Center is a must stop. At 11,796ft above sea level, it is the highest visitor center in the entire national park system. It’s about four miles west of Rock Cut and overlooks the Never Summer Range. The only place to purchase food and beverages in the park is at Trail Ridge Store, adjacent to the visitor center at the top of Trail Ridge Road.

HIGH ALTITUDEhints ATTITUDE ABOUT THE ALTITUDE
Most towns in Colorado have welcome signs that list the altitude but not the population. Why? Because Colorado has the highest mean altitude (6,800ft) of all the states and is proud of it. Winter Park’s elevation is 9,052ft compared to Denver the Mile High City’s elevation of 5,280ft.
WHAT IS HIGH ALTITUDE?
The environment is different at high altitude (5,280ft and above) compared to sea level. One often feels breathless because the atmospheric pressure is 40 percent less dense at altitude, which gives the impression of less air to breathe. Elevations in Colorado range from 3,385ft on the high plains to 14,439ft at Mt. Elbert, the highest point in the state.

START SLOWLY
It takes the body time to acclimate to the altitude. Some people get altitude sickness, sometimes called acute mountain sickness (AMS), and suffer from fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea, headache, and disturbed sleep. Age, weight, gender, and level of fitness have little effect on who might suffer. Often symptoms are worse the second day but end in four or five days. One should rest, drink extra water and less alcohol, and eat fewer salty foods the first one or two days at altitude. If altitude sickness symptoms persist, see a doctor. Pets are affected by high altitude, just like humans. Give your dog lots of water and plenty of rest.
CRAZY WEATHER
It can snow somewhere in Colorado every month of the year. Be prepared in case you are driving or playing in that “somewhere.” Always carry a jacket or fleece in case the weather changes quickly. The Colorado mountains can be electrifying, especially during the summer monsoon season beginning mid-July. Generally, the storms build fast and furious in the early afternoon and end as quickly as they begin. If you are caught in a storm, seek a low-lying area, preferably near rocks and not trees.
GET YOUR VITAMIN D3
Exposure to the sun provides D3, an essential vitamin that maintains the health of bones and teeth. However, at high altitude the sun’s ultraviolet rays are 36 percent stronger than at sea level, so apply sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 so that you won’t burn. Apply at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun with a shot-glass amount of sunscreen on skin that will be exposed. Sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes from UV rays. Brimmed hats shade your scalp and face.
your intake of water before starting any activity. Always carry water and drink two or three times more water than usual. The water from Winter Park is delicious because it’s melted snow. (Don’t drink the water from the clear mountain streams without treating or filtering the water first.) Our water supplies Colorado’s Front Range so be eco-friendly and purchase a reusable water bottle from one of the souvenir shops.
Colorado’s average humidity (measured at noon) is 38 percent, much less than at sea level. The lack of humidity means it’s easier to become dehydrated, so drinking water is essential. If you become dehydrated your heart will work harder, causing you to fatigue more quickly and may lead to altitude sickness. Increase
No one wants to see other people’s trash, so if you brought it in, take it out. This includes used toilet paper. Food scraps, empty cans, bottles, and other debris are dangerous to animals. Help protect our wildlife and the beautiful natural resources by keeping them litter free.
HYDRATE
PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
In Colorado, dressing in layers year round is best so you can adjust to the sudden changes in weather. Avoid cotton, especially in high-energy activities, as cotton retains moisture and causes chills. Functional yet hip athletic clothes will maintain your body’s core temperature while you enjoy the outdoors, and afterwards they are perfect for dinner. Most adults lose ten percent of their heat from their heads. Wear a stocking cap to keep your ears warm; a brimmed hat will provide sun protection. Wool socks, not cotton, and thin gloves for hiking are recommended.

HIGH-ALTITUDE FISHING
The Fraser River, the first main tributary of the Colorado River, has small to medium-sized stream fishing. The Colorado River is joined by the Fraser River west of Granby. This stretch from Granby downstream to Troublesome Creek, five miles from Kremmling, contains some of the best trout fishing in the state. This area is designated Gold Medal fishing by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which means the river has a minimum of 60 pounds of trout per acre and at least 12 trout measuring 14 inches or longer in that span. This offers the greatest potential for trophy-size trout fishing. Use artificial flies and lures only. Catch and release only. Known for mackinaws, rainbows, browns, and kokanee, Lake Granby offers all kinds of fishing opportunities and access. Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake are connected by a boat channel and have the same varieties of fish as Lake Granby. A valid Colorado fishing license is required for all persons 16 years or older to fish in Colorado. Good news for fish in Grand County: An agreement between Grand County and Denver Water will leave 651 million gallons of water a year that otherwise would be diverted to the headwaters of the Colorado River. This will improve the health of streams, a habitat for fish and other wildlife. Colorado Water Conservation Board will protect the water left in streams and use it to preserve natural conditions.

MOUNTAIN BIKING Winter Park and the Fraser Valley are the Mountain Bike Capital USA™ for good reason. The region has more than 600 miles of diverse trails offering something for everyone. An amazing 90 percent of the trails can be accessed from town, making it a unique mountain-biking mecca. The trail system evolved from logging and tunnel construction roads which now serve to connect the miles and miles of challenging single-track trails. From novice cruises to expert climbing, cross country to downhill, family rides to adrenaline rushes—pedaling in the Fraser Valley is a memorable experience.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRAILS The Fraser River Trail runs six-plus miles between the town of Fraser and Winter Park, paralleling US Hwy 40. Local shops have trailers for toddlers, trail-abikes for younger children, and offer a variety of rentals and accessories. The Fraser to Granby Trail is a scenic trail that takes you through the Fraser Valley on county roads and dual track. Past Tabernash, the trail turns to packed gravel until you reach the YMCA of the Rockies. The descent into Granby is more technical and recommended for intermediate riders.
ADRENALINE RUSH
Downhill riding requires a bike with specialized shocks that can absorb more bumps than a conventional mountain bike. The trails have jumps and obstacles for the skilled rider. The valley’s two ski areas transform to bike parks in the summer. Since they are ski areas, the trails are steeper than many cross country trails in the valley, which is why certain trails are limited to downhill riding only. Bike Granby Ranch has a fun and exciting downhill course. The park has some old favorite trails in addition to family-friendly trails for beginners, as

To Granby Ranch, Snow Mountain Ranch, and Meadow Creek
FRASER TO GRANBY
hiking “Where’s a good hiking trail?” is one of the most commonly asked questions in the Fraser Valley. The answer: “Anywhere your feet can take you!” With Arapaho National Forest, Fraser Experimental Forest, and the wilderness areas of Byers Peak, Indian Peaks, James Peak, and Vasquez right out your back door, the options are endless. There are also countless miles of trails in Rocky Mountain National Park and in the wilderness areas around the park, so your hiking adventures can take you far and wide. If you can walk, you can hike. It’s an activity almost everyone can enjoy. Grand County has an average elevation of 9,500ft, which requires you to be prepared for your adventure. Remember not to be cavalier with Mother Nature and the wilderness. Most backcountry accidents happen to those who aren’t realistic about their abilities, or go alone and don’t use a buddy contact system. Here are some tips to ensure you have fun on your hiking adventure.
STAY HYDRATED
A hydration pack or a fanny pack with holders for water bottles are easy ways to stay hydrated. Taking small sips often is better than large gulps now and then. Drink lots of water and remember that if you are thirsty, you are already a bit dehydrated. (See pages 14-15 for Highaltitude Hints.)
WEATHER ALERT
The weather in the mountains changes quickly and without warning, especially during the monsoon season from mid-July through August. Start out early and be well prepared. You do not want to be above treeline in a lightning and thunderstorm! If you do get caught, try to descend as safely and quickly as possible.
28
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Wear a wicking material against your skin and avoid cotton as it traps moisture. You will get cold. Add a warming layer, such as a fleece pullover, and then a shell for wind or rain. Wear a brimmed hat to protect your face from the sun. The proper clothing is incredibly important; there is never bad weather, just the wrong clothing!
HAPPY FEET
If your feet are happy, the rest of your body will be happy. Proper footwear is essential to a good hike. You want a comfortable, supportive pair of shoes or boots. Tennis shoes will do but hiking boots are best. Wear a pair of wicking socks as well, either wool or a synthetic option. Having a second pair in your backpack is always a good idea.
ESSENTIALS TO PACK
Your pack needs to hold water, food, extra clothing (including rain gear), sunglasses with good UV protection, sunscreen, map, knife, whistle, insect repellent, and first aid kit.
MAKE A PLAN
It is ideal to hike with a companion but if you decide to go alone, let someone know your trip route and notify them upon your safe return. Remember that hiking to your destination is only half the journey. Ditch the earphones and take in the sounds of the Rockies.
camping Renew your soul. Spend a night or two under a star-filled sky next to a roaring campfire. The Fraser Valley Lions Club manages three campgrounds in the Fraser Valley. All are first come, first served, but you can phone ahead to check for availability. All sites are $18/night. Robbers Roost Campground, at the first switchback on the west side at the base of Berthoud Pass, is located on the banks of the Fraser River and surrounded by old-growth blue spruce trees. It has 11 campsites, vault toilets, fire grates, picnic tables, but no electric hookups or dump station. 970-726-0889. Idlewild Campground, one mile south of the town of Winter Park on US Hwy 40, is also on the Fraser River and is crossed by the paved Fraser River Trail, a strolling and cycling path. The 26 campsites have water and there are three pit toilets, but no electricity or dump stations. 970-726-0889. St. Louis Creek Campground, located on County Road 73, four miles west of Fraser. (Take a left at the traffic light on US Hwy 40 and County Road 72.) As the name implies, this campground is on the shores of the St. Louis Creek. Creekside Trail, which is popular with mountain bikers and hikers, runs through a section
of the campground. The 17 sites have bear-proof food lockers, tables, fire pits, potable water, and two bathrooms. 970-726-4430. There are numerous other options for camping outside of the Fraser Valley: Green Ridge Campground on the banks of Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Stillwater Campground on US Hwy 34 next to Lake Granby, Arapaho Bay Campground on the shores of Lake Granby, and Willow Creek Campground. Reservations at 877-444-6777, www.recreation.gov. The user fee for Arapaho National Recreation Area is $5/car daily, $10/3 days, $15/week, or $30/year, in addition to camping fees. Dispersed camping is allowed anywhere in Arapaho National Forest, but you must adhere to the dispersed-camping guidelines. For complete information, visit www.fs.fed.us or stop by Winter Park Information Center for a brochure.
PROTECT OUR BEARS
Black bears have a strong sense of smell and will eat almost anything. Your actions may alter bear behavior. Store your food and trash in a bear-resistant container or hang them high out of a bear’s reach.
LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND
With the popularity of outdoor activities in the Fraser Valley comes the signs of humans. Respect nature and the wild places, and keep them wild. After your lunch, check for trash or “sweep the beach,” as river people say. Don’t pick wildflowers or harass the nests or homes of the critters that work hard to eke out a life in this extreme climate. Abide by Leave No Trace ethics, and teach everyone in your group so that all may have an unpolluted, Rocky Mountain experience.

HORSING around
YEEHAW!
Horses and the American West go hand in hand. A fantastic way to take in the majestic northern Colorado Rockies is astride a horse or in a horse-drawn wagon. There are a number of reputable outfitters in the Fraser Valley that offer riding options. Before every ride, a professional guide will make sure you feel comfortable with your horse. Wranglers and guides teach a basic horsemanship and safety course, determine your ability level, and match you with the appropriate horse. Don’t be loud or boisterous around the horses. They are social animals, so give your horse a reassuring pat occasionally.
RIDING ATTIRE
No flip-flops or sandals. Wear sturdy shoes, and if you have cowboy or cowgirl boots, even better! Wear long pants, and bring along a jacket. Always wear sunscreen. To protect your neck and face, wear a brimmed hat—a cowboy hat! Bring a water bottle or hydration pack.
SADDLE UP!
Sombrero Stables at Snow Mountain Ranch/YMCA of the Rockies is located in the Fraser Valley, halfway between Winter Park and Granby. They offer trail rides and wagon rides for every age group in your family. Children who aren’t ready for a full trail ride can take a lead-around pony ride. Or visit Snow Mountain Farm where sheep and goats bleet and baa for your attention. Go into their pen and give a goat a hug! Breakfast and dinner wagon rides are a great option for those who’d rather not go horseback. All rides offer spectacular views of the Continental Divide. The experienced wranglers often share knowledge of the local wildlife. Breakfast and dinner horseback rides are also available. 970-887-1999, www.sombrero.com.
30
Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa is home to Cabin Creek Stables. With its pure mountain setting, it is an ideal place to spend time with a horse. Want to learn how to cut, move, and pen cattle? Go on a cattle drive or rancher’s ride and feel like a real cowboy or cowgirl. Wagon rides with dinner or off-road buggy rides are also available. For your lil’ buckaroo, how about a 30-minute pony ride through the woods? Horseback rides range from one or two hours to a full day. Weight restrictions apply, and children must be ten or older to ride by themselves. No riding double. Open seven days a week, 7:30am-4:30pm. 970-726-7000, www.devilsthumbranch.com.
SUMMER RODEOS
Looking for a Wild West experience? Go to a rodeo! Rodeos began more than 100 years ago as weekend recreation on working ranches. Today, three rodeos in Grand County feature the best local amateur and professional contestants in the traditional cowboy skills of riding and roping. Flying Heels Arena, just south of Granby on US Hwy 40 across from City Market, has rodeos on June 4, 11, 18, and July 2, 3. Stay for fireworks after the rodeo on July 3. 970-887-2311, www.granbyrodeo.com. In its 33rd season, High Country Stampede Rodeo is held every Saturday, July 2-Aug. 13, at John Work Arena one mile west of Fraser. (Rain or shine; the stands are covered.) Free parking. Junior rodeo 3pm, Chuck Wagon Western BBQ 4-9pm, main rodeo performance 7pm. Family Fun Night July 23. 970-726-4118 or 970-449-9040, www.highcountrystampede.com. Rodeo season continues with the 100th Annual Middle Park Fair and Rodeo, Aug. 10-14. Saturday is Family Day with kids’ games, a ranch rodeo, the 4H livestock auction, and a dance. Rodeo at 1pm on Sunday. Middle Park Fairgrounds, Kremmling. 303-775-7528.

TOWNS OFgrand county
FRASER
People love Fraser for its rich history, scenic beauty, central location to outdoor recreation, and down-home atmosphere. It was once home to a German prisonerof-war camp, some of whom made Fraser their home after World War II. Fraser is a commercial hub, with a supermarket, post office, library, history museum, elementary school, vacation lodging, a recreation center, restaurants, shops, churches, and a rodeo arena. Amtrak trains bound for San Francisco and Chicago stop in Fraser. For more information, call 970-726-5491 or visit www.frasercolorado.com.
GRANBY
Western hospitality abounds in laid-back Granby, with antique and gift shops, outdoor supply stores, restaurants, a major grocery store, a new hospital, and schools. Initially a farming and railroad town, Granby is bordered by the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area to the east and ranch lands to the west; thus, any direction you drive will be a scenic one. In the 1920s, iceberg lettuce, which was able to endure the high altitude, was cultivated where Lake Granby Reservoir is today. The lettuce was shipped to eastern
hotels in railroad boxcars refrigerated with ice, hence the name. For more information, call 970-887-2311 or visit www.granbychamber.com.
GRAND LAKE
As one of Colorado’s oldest resort towns, the charming village of Grand Lake is the “Western Gateway” to Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road. Enjoy the beauty of Colorado’s largest natural lake and stroll down the historic boardwalk with more than 60 shops, restaurants, and galleries. Grand Lake is located adjacent to the Colorado River National Scenic and Historic Byway. For more information, call 970-627-3402 or visit www.grandlakechamber.com.
HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS
Rich with history and the mineral springs for which the town is named, Hot Sulphur Springs is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Along the Colorado River at the mouth of Byers Canyon, Hot Sulphur Springs first drew Ute Indians who soaked in the springs to ease ailments. By the early 1900s, it was one of the most popular hot spring resorts in the state and still draws soaking enthusiasts. For more information, call 970-725-3933 or visit www.hotsulphurspringsco.com.
KREMMLING
“Doc” Graves, who developed much of the Fraser Valley. More “hidden away” than the towns of Tabernash and Fraser, Hideaway Park was incorporated and renamed Winter Park in 1978. This outdoorsy, friendly community has a diverse array of restaurants, boutiques, and shops. Hideaway Park, in the center of town, is family-friendly with a playground, picnic area, restrooms, and a skate park. Music festivals and concerts fill the park throughout the summer. Mountain bikers find plenty of places to ride here. With 600 miles of trails and two downhill bike parks just a few miles away, this is one of the state’s top mountain biking destinations. Many of the trails are accessible right from town. For more information, call 970-726-4118 or visit www.playwinterpark.com.
The most populated town in Grand County, Kremmling is located at the confluence of the Blue River, Muddy Creek, and the Colorado River. With the soaring peaks of the Gore Range to the southwest and three national forests nearby, Kremmling draws outdoor enthusiasts to hunt, fish, and snowmobile. The Colorado River Headwaters National Scenic & Historic Byway passes through Kremmling and continues over scenic Trough Road, where river rafting and fly fishing on the Colorado River are popular. Kremmling McElroy Airfield is a general aviation airport. www.fltplan.com/ airportInformation/20V.htm. For more information, call 970-724-3472 or visit www.kremmlingchamber.com.

GROUPS & weddings FOR EVERY GET-TOGETHER
Watch your next special event come alive by bringing it to Grand County! The mountain region’s diversity gives you choices, lots of choices.
FACILITIES
Facilities in the area include hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, conference rooms at numerous resorts, guest and dude ranches, impressive private homes, golf course clubhouses, barns, and even campgrounds. If the goal is education or reflection, choose a property with few distractions. If the goal is networking, choose a venue with spaces to meet and mingle. Whatever the goal of your conference, add recreation into the mix. Whether it’s whitewater rafting or mountain biking along a single track trail, opportunities for teambuilding are abundant.
FAMILY REUNIONS
Grand County hosts thousands of family reunions every year. Here’s some advice for having a memorable one: Book early to reserve the perfect location and give family members plenty of time to arrange schedules. Have a central place to post excursions, hiking plans, bike rides, fishing trips, and meal times. Know your group. It is helpful to schedule activities in which all generations can come together, such as meals, talent shows, and movie nights.
CENTRAL LOCATION
Colorado’s central location means a maximum air-travel time of four hours from anywhere in the United States. Also, Grand County has the only town with a ski resort located on the Amtrak route, which provides an uncommon mode of travel for attendees. Only two hours from DIA and away from the congested 1-70 corridor, this area offers something for all.
TYING THE KNOT AT HIGH ALTITUDE
If you’re looking for a spectacular location for your destination wedding, Grand County is ideal. Weddings are popular in Grand County because of its low-key atmosphere, affordability, natural scenic beauty, close proximity to a major airport (DIA), and the diverse venue choices. Choose from mountainsides, lakesides, hotels, restaurants, dude ranches, barns, bed and breakfasts, or scenic golf courses. Couples may choose anything from a Western-themed wedding with rustic appeal to a high-end formal affair at a destination guest ranch or at a large, plush rental home. Grand County offers a wide array of caterers, floral designers, professional photographers, and talented musicians for everything from classical to country. There are DJs, carriages for hire, DIA shuttle service, and a mobile photo booth.
The couple might choose a mountaintop wedding and depart on a chairlift instead of a limousine after their vows! (How cool is that?) A couple can give their wedding a different look and feel by creating one that reflects their personality.
CONSIDER THE WEATHER
Colorado is known for deep blue skies and 300 days of sunshine. However, changing weather and afternoon thunderstorms can be sudden. Always have a backup plan in case of inclement weather.

TRAVEL PLANNER Travel in Colorado can be dramatically affected by the weather. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a website that tracks current road conditions, weather information, accurate travel times and speeds across the state – all up-to-date and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also sign up for free e-mail and text message alerts. Create an account and subscribe to the corridors and topics that apply to you and your travels. You can follow on Twitter @Colorado DOT. The site has traffic cameras you can click on to view various road and traffic conditions. The same roadcondition information is available by calling 511 or 303-639-1111 from anywhere in the state. www.cotrip.org.

WILDabout Animals The area around Winter Park is a magnet for animals of all sizes. Help keep wildlife wild. Never feed the animals (it’s against the law and not good for the animals’ health) and never approach or harass wildlife. Do not run into a meadow or cross a stream to get a closer look; you are an uninvited guest in their living space. Be respectful of the animals and of those wanting to look and take pictures. Drive carefully through wildlife areas, especially at night. Animals can come out of nowhere. The name “black bear” is misleading since the bear can range in color from blond to black. Bears are generally shy, but you should always use caution in brushy areas, near a stream, or where the trail rounds a bend. Never underestimate the power of a surprised bear! Bears usually have a clumsy, plodding walk, but don’t be fooled; they can move like greased lightning. Bears have been known to approach cabins if trash is left out. In most cases, they will detect you and leave, but if you see a bear, calmly and slowly leave the area. Do not run or make sudden movements. The beautiful and cunning red fox is found throughout the Rockies. It is very intelligent and adapts well to human environments. Its long bushy tail with a distinctive white tip provides balance for jumping. The red fox has orange-red fur on its back, sides, and head and white fur under its neck and on its chest. Its strong legs allow it to reach speeds of 45mph, a great benefit for catching prey and evading predators. Red foxes are solitary hunters who feed on rodents, rabbits, birds, and other small game, but their diet can be flexible depending on their environment. Moose can be spotted all around the Winter Park area. The herbivores are the largest members of the deer family and prefer areas near lakes, streams, and wetlands because of the abundance of willows and aspen. Moose are impressive with their huge ears, and the males have velvet-wrapped antlers. They are known for their surly disposition, especially if they have young or if there is a dog in the area. Bulls can weigh close to 1,000lbs and run 35mph, so keep your distance. Hummingbirds are beautiful tiny birds that weigh only two to three grams. The humming noise is their wings beating 80 times per second. They can maneuver at 50 miles per hour darting in and out. Hummingbirds are the only bird that can fly backward, and their feet are only for perching, not walking. Due to their rapid breathing and heart rate, they eat often and love the sweet Rocky Mountain wildflowers. Four species migrate to this area of Colorado: Broad-tailed, Rufous, Blackchinned and Calliope.
