Deidre Rickards – Director of Strings After a period of extended leave, Deidre indicated in January this year, that for personal and professional reasons she was unable to return to her position as Director of Strings at PLC Armidale. We remain indebted to Mrs Rickards for her commitment, her inspiring leadership of the Strings program at PLC Armidale and for her passion for quality music education. We look forward to her ongoing connection with the College and wish both her and her family well in the coming years. Bronwyn Grills - Graphic Designer After 4 Ad Astras, at least 8 Green Tartans, countless Lion’s Roar publications, a “gazillion” invitations, presentation folders, bookmarks, calendars, cards, signs, banners, tags, flyers, flags, tablecloths, prospectus’, etc, etc and a commemorative book, REPAST, …. Bronwyn has decided to change direction and head away from the computer and spend time with her husband Stuart and daughters, Anna and Camilla, to travel around Australia! We have very much appreciated Bronwyn’s professionalism and absolute unwavering “Can Do” approach to everything. Thank you Bronwyn for all your “grilling”. You will be very much missed. Jacqueline Whitland - Extension & Support Teacher Has moved to greener pastures in Sydney. We wish Jacqueline well in her new role. Rick Hatch - Pottery Teacher After years of sculpting and stories, Rick will no longer be teaching pottery in our Junior School. Rick’s amazing lessons will be missed by our children, parents and staff alike, and we wish he and Suzanne all the very best in the future. FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the 2018 Winter edition of the Green Tartan. Thank you for the feedback received from the wider PLC Armidale Community that this publication is a helpful summary of what is happening at the College, especially for our Alumni of past students, parents and staff. The interest shown in the College and the desire to stay connected in support of PLC Armidale is greatly appreciated. At Speech Day last year, our 2020 Strategic Direction Document was launched which I trust many will have received. Rather than a list of aspirational projects which may never be delivered, the Executive, supported by College Council outlined the strategic focus of the College into the future as we secure and strengthen our position as the leading all-girls school in the New England region. This document affirms: Who we are • All-girls • All of school years • Faith based • Inclusive • Regional yet Global • Learning & relationships Our core values • Integrity • Humility • Respect • Self-discipline Four areas of focus • Teaching & Learning • Staff Development • Sustainable Business Planning • Christian Values and Pastoral Care Within each of these areas of focus, specific project plans are delineated to ensure ideas are turned into actions. One such project within the area of Teaching and Learning has been facilitated by the selection of PLC Armidale to take part in the initial round of the AIS NSW School Improvement Service. As part of the application process, we were required to supply our strategic direction for Teaching and Learning at the College, articulated in our document as the Learning Journey@PLC Armidale. This is an articulation of key areas of focus, for each stage of learning, of core skills, learner attributes and experiences aligned to child and adolescent development.

Welcome to 2018

Mrs Nicola Taylor - Principal We look forward to the value this project will bring, along with others underway to continue to shape and improve the educational opportunities unique to girls that PLC Armidale strives to provide. OUR EVENTS

GUILD DRAMA

In its 40th year, the always highly anticipated Guild Drama more than lived up to expectations and reputation. Being the special 130th anniversary year of PLC Armidale, the staff, Mrs Foster and Mrs Brown, recognised it was the opportunity to do something special and fashioned a new concept. Both recognised that this Year 11 cohort, who had always done things their own way, on their own terms, were just the cohort to do it. The girls suggested that a short film be produced, that commemorated the 90 years leading up to the introduction of Guild Drama, and then the Guilds were each responsible for portraying the last 40 years. They were four very unique interpretations of 70s, 80s, 90s and the 00s. There were some interesting fashion trends, music and moves portraying those years. As it was the special commemorative year, the College welcomed back three much adored former members of staff, Petah Abbott, Renate Grasser and Judy Hinch to adjudicate. However, as this year required much more cooperation and co-ordination, an overall winner was not officially awarded.

SPEECH DAY 2017

Our Guest Speaker was Kylie Alcorn (nee Marjoram, 1985). She is featured in the photo below with Principal, Mrs Nicola Taylor and her parents, Tony and Doreen Marjoram.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

In March, Rotary District 9650 hosted its two annual Conference dinners at PLC Armidale. Rotarians and their partners came from all over Northern NSW, many in the audience being past parents! The Rotarians were so impressed with the event, that Bob Ryan, the Rotary District Governor made a special return trip to PLC Armidale’s final assembly in Term 1, to present a “Pride of Workmanship” award in recognition of the work the students and staff did to assist Rotary in the successful conduct of its events. As a Community Sponsor of the Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS), PLC Armidale will host one of its intensive sports camps next month, this time in Tennis. PLC Armidale will again play host to another iconic New England community event in July school holidays … the Fleece 2 Fashion Awards (formerly known as TAWFA). Tickets are on sale now. Despite being held in the middle of Winter, it will be another wonderful opportunity to showcase PLC Armidale to a broader community audience.

PASTORAL CARE IN 2018

Under the direction of the newly formed Pastoral Care Leadership team, the Flourish@PLC program which was initiated in 2016, has continued with transformed lessons, activities and interactions based on the VIA character strengths that align with the College’s Strategic Direction 2020. Students have been learning, doing, growing and developing by building character, positive relationships and understanding well-being to empower each student to strive, thrive and flourish. AUTUMN FESTIVAL

A very warm day greeted the girls and staff at this year’s Autumn Festival on St Patrick’s Day. Another huge contingent of girls and staff participated in such a wonderful community event and whilst not compulsory, the girls (and staff) did enjoy their ice-block at the end of the parade! There was also a very large group of runners who took part in the Campus to City Canter that same morning, with Year 7 student, Chiyo Brown finishing 3rd overall.

FRIENDSHIP CAMP

Girls Just Want to Have Fun! Our Year 11 Peer Support Leaders had a ball with our new Year 7 students at Echidna Gully in the first week of term.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS Last term our Year 7, 8 and 9 students travelled to Somerset Outdoor Learning Centre, Colo River, for 3 days of adventurous activities including raft-building, a river run obstacle course, milk crate stack, low ropes, high ropes, rock climbing, abseiling, bushwalking and canoeing. All these activities were designed to build teamwork and independence, and encouraged our girls to step out of their comfort zones and have a go at new things. The girls also enjoyed sleeping out in tents, cooking My Camp Kitchen Rules style and sharing stories, marshmallows and damper around the campfire. It was fantastic to see all the students and staff having a go at every activity, even if they were a bit nervous about some of them. Here is some of their feedback: Year 9 student - “Throughout the 30degree heat on a six hour hike, you would think a group of girls who hadn’t hiked before, would give up. But we all showed true grit and determination to finish the hike and go for a swim. You can do anything if you have the right people around you!” Year 8 student - “The most important lesson I learnt was not to take being outdoors and being around friends without technology for granted.” Year 7 student - “There’s a spider in the bathroom!” “There’s a caterpillar in my bed!“and “I’m not going in, it’s too cold. You go first!”

CANBERRA EXCURSION

At the same time our Year 10 and some Pathways students visited our nation’s capital in the annual excursion to Canberra.

OUR PATHWAYS

Our Pathways Now in its second year of operation, our Pathways program continues to progress from strength to strength. Our aim is to prepare international students from non-English speaking backgrounds for entry into High School in Australia, whether at PLC Armidale, Sydney or elsewhere. The language requirements for successful integration into the mainstream schooling environment are significant, but so too is the ability to engage culturally and socially with Australian students. PLC has a rigorous camping program and the end of Term 2 saw many of the girls across the school engage in camps as well as an excursion to Canberra. For our Pathways girls, camping is often an entirely new experience and presents many challenges and opportunities for personal growth and forming new friendships. Geegie, a Year 8 Thai student commented that, despite some initial misgivings, she loved rock climbing because “it was out of my comfort zone”. It is this sort of fresh enthusiasm for adventure that is valued in our College and provides a proving ground for girls’ characters in the future. Word is spreading about the quality and effectiveness of the program, which means a greater demand for places and spaces (Hilton Boarding House will undergo renovations this term to cater for this need), as well as increased opportunities. Some of the students from last year who reached a level of English proficiency have transitioned into mainstream classes either here at PLC Armidale or to schools in Sydney and Melbourne. Along with following a rigorous curriculum, our staff are constantly challenging themselves to deliver innovative activities that engage our international students, and provides them with a high standard of English language competency, cultural understanding and appreciation. For example, Hot Seat Friday, where members of the community are invited to attend class and the girls have the opportunity to ask questions. Our Pathways students also participate in the greater life of the College and community, even doing things like volunteering at the recent Rotary conference hosted at PLC Armidale; attending the Coast weekend (and learning about the surf), attending the Armidale Civic Welcome ceremony and being involved with the various co and extra-curricular activities and Guild program. The Pathways program has certainly added a fascinating dimension to the life of the College in more ways than one. Thank you to our PLC Armidale community for embracing our new initiative. An indication of this, was that in the April holiday break, we had more families offer to host Pathways students, than we actually had students requiring “homestays”! Thank you everyone.

OUR EVENTS AROUND OUR SENIOR SCHOOL

IWD & Harmony Day In March this year, students and staff donned a touch of purple in support of International Women’s Day, and went orange in recognition of Harmony Day. It was terrific to see this wave of support right across the College from Junior School to Senior School for these two very significant days.

Year 10 Excursion to Canberra

Rotary National Youth Science Forum Continuing the tradition, two PLC Armidale students were selected to attend the prestigious National Youth Science Forum, supported by Rotary and held in the January holidays in Canberra. Mackenzie Wood (Walcha) and Gabriella Parsons (Deepwater) were among only around two hundred students from across Australia who benefitted from the week’s activities. Well done girls!

Funding Success: Integrated Learning Projects Earlier this year PLC Armidale received a $20,000 Federal Grant to implement the “Digital Literacy in Schools Program”. The grant application was a collaborative effort between the College’s STEAM staff: Mr Jonathon Shumack, Mr David Moffitt and Mrs Paula Goode, in an effort to get a head start on the new Digital Technologies national curriculum scheduled for implementation across all key learning areas in 2019. The successful application focused on two specific project areas: An Integrated Learning Program along with the development of a new Innovation Maker Space, which will be implemented over a two-year period.

Student Exchanges

Some 1750 applications were submitted across Australia, with only sixty receiving funding. PLC Armidale was the only independent school in the New England/North West region on the successful recipients list. Around half of the $20,000 Grant will be used to purchase state of the art equipment such as laser cutters, robotics and special items for the new Innovation or Maker Space at the College. The remainder will be utilised in professional learning for staff in the use of digital technologies.

One of the projects noted in the Strategic Direction document was the expansion of our International Student Exchange program offering. Co-Ordinator, Chris O’Neill has organised this year’s inbound students and interviewed for our outbound students. During the Christmas holidays, a number of students were fortunate to travel to France as well as Germany for the opportunity of a lifetime on an International Student Exchange. Elinor Warwick and Alex Wright experienced school and life in France, whilst Emma Pearce, enjoyed her time in Germany.

AROUND OUR EVENTS OUR JUNIOR SCHOOL

School Camps Years 3 & 4 travelled to Lake Keepit, whilst our older Years 5 & 6 girls spent the week exploring around Naamaroo in Sydney, even finding themselves on Channel 7’s Sunrise!

Queen’s Baton Relay The Queen's Baton Relay, is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of each Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, currently Queen Elizabeth II, who entrusts the Baton to the first relay runner. In the first week of school year, our Year 3 to 6 students were a part of this celebration as the Baton arrived in Armidale. The girls made their way to Curtis Park and enjoyed watching a celebratory performance about the Commonwealth Games.

Global Garden Project Pre-Kindergarten girls, Mrs Dettwiler, Mrs Faulkner and PLC parent, Mr Mills have been ensuring that our Global Garden is up and running for 2018. Our watering system is ready, our mulch is down and our seedlings are in. We look forward to the “fruits of their labour” down the track!

“Crazy Colour for Courage” To conclude a very busy first term, in a fun, yet purposeful way, the Junior School SRC and School Leaders lead their peers in a Charity event ’Crazy Colour for Courage’ to recognise our community members who are directly or indirectly being affected by Cancer. A gold coin donation to decorate a cupcake in a colourful way, using fruit, helped raise money for Camp Quality and the Cancer Council.

The HSC results of the Class of 2017 reflect the resilience, application and willingness to work hard which characterized many in this diverse and capable cohort. The achievement of the girls individually and collectively across courses exemplify the continued development of a culture of learning at PLC Armidale. Each year, a leading Sydney newspaper publishes a list of the top 150 schools in the State, and in 2017 PLC Armidale was ranked 148th in the State, one of only a few regional schools to feature on this list and the only Armidale school to do so. In summary, the high score results (Band 6 or equivalent) were achieved by 35% of our cohort across thirteen separate courses taught at the College. In addition, 78% of the Class of 2017 achieved a Band 5 (mark over 80) result in at least one subject. Congratulations to Ragavi Jeyakumar (99.75) who achieved the highest ATAR for 2017 and made the State’s All Rounder List, also to Georgina Hebblewhite (98.15) and Jessica Chambers who attained an ATAR of over 95. Special mention should also be made of Tara Price and Bonnie Cox who both had their Visual Arts Body of Work nominated for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS and to Agnes Thwaites who was nominated for Encore for her HSC Music 1 Major Composition work. Recording high bands of achievement is one measure of success. However, the academic growth of each student, consistent application yielding a personal best or persevering through adversity, are measures of lasting success. Students enabled to access courses of choice at universities or colleges of choice are also key indicators of success. Congratulations to the following 13 girls who were recognised on the Distinguished Achievers List for 2017: * Ragavi Jeyakumar - All Rounder & Distinguished Achiever - Chemistry, English Advanced, Modern History, Physics * Agnes Thwaites - Music 1 * Alison Chapman - Ancient History * Alessandra Perry - Drama, Visual Arts * Alex Hiscox - Legal Studies, PDHPE * Brianna Robertson - English Extension 2 * Emma Ranck - Mathematics General 2, Visual Arts * Georgina Hebblewhite - Economics, Physics * Hannah Croft - Mathematics General 2 * Jessica Chambers - Ancient History, Biology, Mathematics * Kate Biddle - Biology * Tara Price - Visual Arts * Julia Chambers (Year 11) - Mathematics

OUR OUREVENTS SUCCESS

HSC Results

Lion’s Youth of the Year Success Following in the footsteps of Ragavi Jeyakumar in 2017, Year 12 student Gabriella Parsons (Deepwater), also won this year’s Club, Regional and District Lion’s Youth of the Year competition and whilst she didn’t win at the State finals in Sydney, by all accounts performed exceptionally well amidst tough competition. Gabi was presented with an inaugural Lion’s Club award by Colin Gadd, Regional Chair of the Lion’s organisation, at an assembly at the end of Term 1.

NSW Government Sport’s Award At the final assembly of term, Member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall, MP, presented Year 11 student, Mia Emanuel with a special award of recognition for representation of NSW in Hockey.

Tri-Schools & Virtual Debating Debating continues to be a popular and successful activity at the College. In Term 1, PLC Armidale, hosted the first round of the Tri-Schools Debating competition between PLC, NEGS and TAS for Years 6,7 and 8, while the Year 9/10 Online Debating (Jessica Li, Thurkka Jeyakumar and Charlotte Little) team took on the team from Scots’ College Albury in the National Virtual Debating competition and won. We look forward to hearing their progress in Term 2 and beyond.

BOARDING OUR EVENTS

BOARDING The first half of 2018 has been one of significant upgrading of the facilities in Todd McBean House. Quite apart from new paint, upgraded furniture and re-purposing of rooms, we now have a much-improved parents' retreat and more attractive common-rooms. The girls have been particularly pleased at the inclusion of “Fergus”, who now graces the wall of the dedicated Year 11 common-room. One of the more significant aims for Boarding at PLC Armidale is to encourage a strong academic culture within the boarding community. In order to achieve this, we began the year with the 2017 Head Prefect and Dux of the College, Ragavi Jeyakumar, speaking to our girls about the sorts of habits she nurtured in order to be a successful student for the HSC. Peer-led commentaries on effective study skills are a particularly powerful way of inspiring application to study and a practical way to improve their own study regime. For Australian students, the most significant celebration of the year is, of course, Christmas. For our Chinese students the equivalent festival is Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year. This year, it fell in late February meaning that our Chinese girls were away from home for the single biggest family reunion in the Chinese calendar. However, we managed to make it a fun activity for all our girls, both international and domestic. The dining room certainly looked quite spectacular decked out in red Chinese lanterns and even the least adventurous diners found the food pretty impressive. For their part, the Chinese girls were appreciative of the effort that had been taken to make them feel a little more at home at the start of the new school year.

Under the new leadership of Mrs Alison Spencer, Head of Boarding, our Boarders have settled in well to new routines and have been actively engaged in a wide range of activities from the very beginning of term, commencing with the annual Coast weekend (even the rain this year didn’t dampen the girls’ spirits). Other highlights included: the amazing culinary feast prepared by the Catercare team in celebration of Chinese New Year; a special Valentine’s Day dinner, visits to markets and places of interest such as “Seasons of New England” in Uralla, or performances at the Hoskins Centre, and participating in the Campus to City Canter & Autumn Festival. In addition, our girls have been busy with their various music and sport practices and competitions, as well as socialising and spending time with each other doing things like cooking and playing games and oh, they do try and fit lots of homework in as well! 10

OUR SPORT EVENTS OUR

Hockey / Indoor Hockey Our Hockey Representatives: Mia Emanuel - Mia was the goalkeeper for the Under 18 NSW Hockey team, which had a fantastic competition, achieving excellent results; scoring 34 goals and only conceding 6 goals in the 8 matches. Mia had a great tournament and finally felt she was ‘back’ following the devastating injury last year and months of hard work to return to form. Mia has now been selected in the NSW Under 21 squad. A great effort considering she is still only 16 years old! Sarah Askey - Last year our 2018 Sports Captain, Sarah Askey was selected in the U18 NSW Indoor Hockey Team. Over the Summer holidays this team competed in the National Championships, finishing the tournament with a gold medal. Mackenzie Constable - After participating in the IGSSA Hockey trials in Sydney, alongside sister, Pip and Year 9 student, Jorja Power, Mackenzie was selected in the NSW IGSSA Under 16 Hockey team. This State team was the overall winner of the competition, finishing the tournament undefeated and had no goals scored against them.

Sports Presentation Night Our representative players and their parents were treated to an informative information evening which involved presentations from: Di Gray on Goal Setting and the “Team Advantage”; Selena Chan on nutrition and Holly Harris (Australian Mountain Bike champion), with tips from a professional athlete’s perspective. Some terrific tips for our emerging sports stars!

Swimming Following the PLC Armidale Swimming Carnival, our swimmers trained hard to compete at the respective next levels in the representative swimming pathway. Last term, one of the largest PLC Senior swim teams assembled in years competed in the annual IGSSA Swimming Carnival. This year’s team consisted of: Mackenzie Robertson, Zoe Martin, Annabelle Kaberry, Piper Starr, Pip Constable, Pollyanna McIntyre, Heidi Martin, Naomi Martin, Laura Hayes, Lilly McCook, Jorja Power, Sophie McRae, Lily Coleman, Lucy Martin and Helen Waters. PLC Armidale achieved some great results, with some notable mentions including: Pip Constable - 3rd 13 years Breaststroke Heat 1 Heidi Martin - 3rd 14 years Breaststroke Heat 1 Naomi Martin - 3rd 14 years Backstroke Heat 1 Lilly McCook - 2nd 15 years Breaststroke Heat 1 Junior 4x50 Freestyle Relay: Sophie McRae, Heidi Martin, Naomi Martin and Pollyanna McIntyre - 4th Heat 1 Heidi Martin and Pip Constable also came 9th overall in the breaststroke for their respective age groups, both missing a spot in the final by one place and less than 0.5 second! This year the squad was able to enter an all age 6x50 relay team and by all accounts, the most enjoyable event of the day. After competing well in our carnival and local PSSA Carnival, our IPSHA Swim team, comprising of: Kate Loxley (8 years); Isabella McKay, Natashia Barton, Sophia Smart, India Smith and Amelie van der Werf (10 years); Scarlett Loxley, Ruby Broun (11 years) and Maggie Ryan, Alice Bourne, Holly Dauparas (12 years), competed admirably at SOPAC this term.

Athletics For a number of our high performing PLC athletes, it has been an incredibly successful and rewarding start to 2018. Here is a summary of their achievements so far: The NSW Country Athletics Championships were held in Wollongong before the school year started and despite tough competition our PLC Armidale girls achieved some fantastic results, which provided a boost for their season. Sienna Dellow, Maddi Campbell-Pickering, Bella Watts, Imogen Dellow and Gracie Martin achieved a range of personal bests as well as bronze and silver medals in events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, High Jump and relays in their respective age divisions. Bella Watts won Gold in the Under 15 200m and Gracie Martin won Gold in the Under 18 400m race in a season best time. This success was then followed up when six PLC Armidale girls (PLC Armidale welcomed new Year 7 student, Chiyo Brown) competed at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships held in Sydney and some even more impressive results were achieved, as well as lots of personal bests (PBs). Year 7 students, Chiyo Brown and Sienna Dellow, both competed well. Chiyo placed 7th in the 1500m final (she actually won this event in December 2015) and Sienna placed 8th in the 400m final, as well as running a PB in the 200m final and in the 100m came up against a strong headwind, to finish the competition, 17th overall in NSW in both events. Year 8 students, Bella Watts and Maddi Campbell-Pickering performed extremely well, with Bella finishing 4th in both the 200m and 400m finals, with two incredible PBs (and qualifiying for Nationals); Maddi finished 7th in NSW in the Under 15 High Jump, as well as competing in the 100m and 200m. Year 9 student, Imogen Dellow competed in the 200m, 400m and High Jump, finishing with a number of personal bests, and placed 6th overall in the 400m final. Year 11 student, Gracie Martin, placed fourth in the 400m, narrowly missing out on qualifying for Nationals and placed 7th in a red-hot field in the Under 18 200m final. Both Bella Watts and Gracie Martin also competed in their favourite 400m event at the QLD State Championships, and both finished with Silver medals. Bella qualified to compete in the National Junior Athletics Championships in mid- March and in another PB, finished 5th in Australia. An outstanding achievement! We look forward to following their progress over the years ahead.

Congratulations to Kate Loxley, Anais Dettwiler, Natashia Barton, Scarlett Loxley and Keira Peet who travelled to Sydney to compete in the IPSHA Cross Country carnival in March. With over 150 participants in each race, the girls ran admirably. A special congratulations to our youngest competitor, Kate Loxley, who ran against girls a year older than her, and finished 14th (8 & 9 years Division), which qualified her to compete at the next level – CIS, later in the year. A wonderful effort by all girls. Our sincere thanks to parents David Dettwiler, Sarah Loxley and Amanda Barton for their support.

Tildesley Tennis Mackenzie Constable, Tennis Captain 2018 In March, our representative tennis team travelled to Sydney to compete in the Tildesley tennis competition. The team consisted of Charlotte Caldwell, Lucy Caldwell, Pip Constable, Sarah Miron, Alex Wright and myself. This was a very special year as it was the centenary of Tildesley tennis, the annual competition between the independent girls schools that focuses on team spirit and sportsmanship. This tournament is one of the largest “participation tournaments” played in NSW and has a great tradition of sportsmanship between the individual players and the schools participating. This year we were treated to a re-enactment of tennis as played in the early years. The girls wore long dresses and played with wooden racquets and the balls were white. The Tildesley shield is awarded to the school with the highest number of points averaged over their team size, which means the smaller schools are not disadvantaged. We are one of the smallest teams that compete with only 6 players. Played over three days, we arrived early on the first morning all excited and ready to go, only to have torrential rain set in for the entire day meaning that play was suspended! Contrary to the weather forecast, Thursday saw no rain meaning play was able to begin. The day started off with Pip and I playing doubles against Tara. Despite sickness in our camp we were able to take the game to a tie breaker, unfortunately losing 8-7. Next up was Alex and Lucy playing a doubles pair from Meriden. Unfortunately they were defeated 8-0 but should be commended for their persistence against a very strong team. Charlie then took the court playing PLC Sydney winning 8-6, advancing her through to the second round. She then took on Queenwood unfortunately being defeated 8-1. Sarah advanced through to the second round with a bye and played Pymble in round two, winning 8-7 in a close tie breaker. She was then defeated by SCEGGS 8-0. None of the girls should be disappointed in how they performed as the scores really did not reflect how close the games were, with many games going to deuce. It has been very encouraging to see the growth and interest in tennis at PLC Armidale.

OUR MUSIC EVENTS

Incredible Isla From weekly In-House Concerts to master classes (with Old Girls, Lexi Hutton; Peta Blyth; Elizabeth Layton and Umberto Clerici; and to the workshops with Richard Gill in Term 2) and performances in grand concert stages, our students have been enjoying some incredible musical experiences and opportunities. The depth and breadth of the exceptional musical talent at PLC Armidale always astonishes.

National Music Camp attendance Year 11 students Isla BIffin and Elinor Warwick were selected to attend the most prestigious National Music Camp in Australia, which was held in Adelaide over the Summer holidays. It was Elinor’s first camp and Isla’s third.

Australian Youth Orchestra Young Symphonists Program Emily Thompson (Year 7) and Elinor Warwick (Year 11) have been selected for the first violins in the Australian Youth Orchestra Young Symphonists Orchestral Program for 12-17 year olds. This is an exciting opportunity for the girls and reflects their exceptional ability as leaders amongst all school aged violinists in NSW. Isla Biffin (Year 11) was also selected as the principal harpist in this program. Well done girls!

NSW Regional Youth Orchestra

(Australian World Orchestra program) Sixty students from across NSW have been selected for the NSW Regional Youth Orchestra Australian World Orchestra Project, which provides the opportunity for leading String players outside of Sydney, to perform with leading Australian orchestral musicians (including members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, other Capital City Orchestras and other professional musicians who work in Europe). This Orchestra includes five students from PLC Armidale: Emily Thompson, Jessica Hughes, Clare Warwick, Elinor Warwick, and Sophia Mackson, who performed at the Sydney Opera House with a similar number of professional musicians, in a grand concert on May 1. Congratulations girls!

Gondwana National Youth Choirs Congratulations to Lily Graham, Isabelle Taylor, Clare Warwick, Elinor Warwick, Gabrielle Cotterell, Lucy Quast, Emily Thompson, Abigail Thompson and Sarah Hughes on their selection in the Gondwana National Youth Choral School during January. 14

Member of the Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra Isla Biffin has been offered her third professional season with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. This time she is working with the Australian Ballet Company as a professional harpist performing a ten-concert season of the Murphy Ballet. Isla spent the week after Easter rehearsing with the Australian Ballet, then returned to her work at the Sydney Opera House, after two weeks performing as the Principal Harpist with the Young Symphonists Orchestra in Queensland. Isla is emerging as one of Australia’s leading harpists under 30 and is currently performing with one of the nation’s most esteemed orchestras. The PLC Armidale community is very proud of her extraordinary achievements and look forward to supporting her career in the years ahead.

Opera Australia Regional Tour Opera Australia is coming to Armidale as part of their Regional Tour later this year, where they will present Madame Butterfly (Puccini). A Children’s Choir was required as part of this production, so numerous children from the two NECOM Choirs, New England Singers and Cantilena, which include many PLC Armidale girls, auditioned. Of the twenty girls selected for this choir, nine are from PLC Armidale. Congratulations to: Sophia Smart and India Smith (Year 5); Abigail Thompson, Maggie Ryan, Keira Peet, and Matilda Poole- Eisenhauser (Year 6); Kaylee Swick and Gabrielle Cotterell (Year 7), and Rachel Kenrick (Year 9). We look forward to seeing these girls performing on stage alongside the professional opera singers in August.

Annual AYO Garden Party Again held at the beautiful home of the Emanuel family, Chevy Chase, where PLC was well represented in the ensembles. Special congratulations to Jessica Hughes as leader of the Armidale Youth Orchestra; Kaylee Swick leader of the Armidale Youth String Orchestra; Crystal Dai leader of the Armidale Youth Wind Ensemble and Rachael Kenrick for her oboe solo in the work Gabriel’s Oboe with the AYO. ADVENTURERS OUR EVENTS

Duke of Edinburgh Award Adventures

From Washpool and Gibraltar Range National Park in December to the New England National Park and surrounds in the April school holiday break, Mrs Caldwell and Mrs Hey, have been hiking with our Gold and Silver Award students. Congratulations to Alison Chapman, Chloe Stier and Julia Chambers for completing their Gold Adventurous Journeys on the first hike, and to Gracen Moore who finished her Gold on the most recent hike to the New England National Park. Sarah Tremont along with Chloe Stier are also to be congratulated for completing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards. On the other end of the spectrum, our newest Bronze Award participants from Year 9 (and Pathways) gained knowledge and confidence through the various practice programs conducted at the College throughout Term 1. They will be more than ready to head out on their expedition come the Winter holiday break! Apart from all the personal and social benefits of participating in this acclaimed international program, the girls and our staff get to see some amazing scenery and enjoy some extraordinary, character-building experiences along the way.

OUR OUREVENTS TEAMS

Cattle Team Our young, energetic Cattle team have been building quite a reputation across the New England show circuit this term, enjoying some success along the way. Temicka Seagrave (Emmaville), Meg Kealey (Walcha), Lily Coleman (Rowena), Isabelle Leitch (Narrabri), Paris Whibley (Moree), Lucy Crowley (Armidale), Charlotte Lamaro (Armidale), Chelsea Waters (Armidale), Tessa Brechin (Sydney), Madison Mitchell (Kingstown), Zoraya Kelly (Guyra), Winnie Huang (China), Laura Hayes (Glen Innes), and Neve Daugherty (Balala), have participated in activities such as: Sheep Meat Judging, Fleece Judging, Steer Judging and Parading. The girls have attended Glen Innes, Guyra, Armidale, Inverell and Walcha Shows and now prepare to take on the Ekka, Brisbane in August. One of the highlights at this year’s Armidale Show was having two of our own PLC Armidale Year 12 students, Saskia Kennett (Forster) and Molly Trindall (Mungindi) as flag bearers on horseback as part of the official opening ceremony. Saskia then sang the National Anthem (Saskia and Molly are pictured below).

The team consists of: Saskia Kennett (Forster), Julia Chambers (Armidale), Jorja Power (Walcha), Eva and Mary Flannery (Armidale), Sophia Grant (Armidale), Lucy Wright (Armidale), Jesse Younghusband (Baradine), Mariah Pennell (Baradine), Molly Trindall (Mungindi) and Anna Thomas (Uralla). WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Fiona Norrie (2006)

Jessica Pearson (2011)

After graduating from PLC Armidale, and with her passion for all things cotton, Fiona headed off to UNE to study a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, where she also boarded at St Albert’s College (Albies). In 2010, she started work in the Agronomy field in the North West region and by 2017 was awarded “Young Cotton Achiever of the the Year”. After initially finding herself in the minority in this male-dominated industry, Fiona found her “spark” with a more considered approach, and is now an advocate for women who have a passion for this industry. In 2014, along with a couple of other entrepreneurial agriculturists, she helped start “Young Aggies” in Moree, which is not only a professional development and networking group for young people in the industry, it also raises money for various charities.

After graduating from PLC Armidale in 2011, Jessica worked as a teacher’s assistant at an English boarding school in 2012, before commencing undergraduate psychology studies at the University of Sydney in 2013. Whilst living on campus, Jessica continued her love of music in the role of Convener of Chamber Music at St Andrew’s College. In 2016, she then completed her fourth year in psychology in Melbourne, gaining first place in her cohort and subsequently receiving the Australian Psychological Society (APS) Prize for academic excellence. She will present the findings of her fourth-year research thesis at the APS Congress in Sydney later this year. Jessica is now a provisional psychologist, currently completing her Master of Psychology (Clinical) at the Institute for Social Neuroscience in Melbourne. Her clinical interests include working with adolescents and young adults with mood, personality and eating disorders. Her research focuses on the latter; in particular, identifying protective strategies against the development of body image concerns in young men and women. Jessica also works remotely two days per week as an HR Project Officer with Pinnacle People Solutions, a regional HR company based in Armidale.

Earlier this year, Fiona was one of a panel of guest speakers at the Savvy Birds - “Ignite to Fly” regional conference in Tamworth.
