FROM THE PRINCIPAL Mrs Nicola Taylor Principal As another eisteddfod season draws to a close, with a range of results achieved, some highpoints, some more challenging and a range in between, the collective outcome demonstrated in our girls and staff a quality that has been the subject of a recent research study conducted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education - Resilience. This particular study focused on why do some children do well under high-risk circumstances whilst others don’t. One of the key findings was that all children are vulnerable to risks and adversities. Adversity resulting in stress, affects development, behaviour, learning and health. The study also found that resilience is a quality which may lead to positive outcomes for individuals faced with significant adversity. The researchers identified a number of factors which build resilience one of which being educational settings which provide developmentally rich relationships and experiences. These practices…“support and derive from a school culture that aims to develop strong relationships, trust, positive interactions, and thoughtful development of student agency.” Darling-Hammond et al (2019) Implications for educational practice of the science of learning and development. Experiences in and out of the classroom, rich learning tasks, excursions, incursions and co-curricular, pastoral care, outdoor education, sport and eisteddfod. Quality experiences provided by caring, committed and highly professional staff contribute significantly to such a school culture. I trust you enjoy reading throughout the Lion’s Roar the many experiences , opportunities and achievements of a wide range of students at the College. A special congratulations to Sophie Bailey (Year 5) and Kate Loxley (Year 4) who took part in the CIS Cross Country this week. Sophie placed an impressive third with Kate following closely coming in 18th. Congratulations also to our four teams who took part in the regional Shakespeare Carnival also held this week with three of the teams making it through to the State finals!

Term 2 Lunch Menu The Term 2 Lunch Menu can be found on our website under the Current Families tab.
Mrs Shona Eichorn Director of Development Communications Survey Thank you to all those families and staff who completed our Communications Survey recently. Your feedback was appreciated and will form the basis of the PLC Armidale Communications Plan moving forward. More details available soon.
Education Perfect PLC Armidale has been successfully using Education Perfect in language learning for several years now. Last week, from 4 - 11 June, Education Perfect ran a statewide language learning competition. While the winning student did not come from PLC Armidale, two of our girls achieved great results by putting in a lot of practice hours. The highest-achieving girl was Chiyo Brown in Year 8, who received a Bronze award for her efforts. She scored over 1000 points for the week. Destiny Mills in Year 9 also received a Merit award, by scoring over 500 points during the competition time. Congratulations to both girls!

NACEL Australasia www.nacel.com.au Bring the world into your home: Hosting an overseas student is a wonderful way to bring another part of the world into your own home. It provides your Australian family with the opportunity to observe and hear the story of a young French person who is a long way from home and keen to experience life in Australia. The students come from all parts of France, which includes the regional areas and have varied interests. We would match a student to a family at your school with similar interests.
Our students are involved in so many activities both in and out of school hours and we do our absolute very best to keep on top of all the information we receive, and then promote.
Nacel Australia’s commitment to social responsibility now extends to the host family to assist them in providing their generous student accommodation.

SENIOR SCHOOL Mrs Anna Caldwell Head of Senior School Finishing the Term Well With two weeks left of Term 2, I encourage everyone to reflect on what you have already achieved and maintain your focus and energy to finish the term well.
Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Bronze Qualifying Adventurous Journey What a fabulous way to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday and 60 years of the Award in Australia, by going on an Adventurous Journey to South West Rocks and Hat Head with our Bronze Awardees. The girls impressed with their teamwork, minimal impact camp craft skills, their gourmet feasts and sense of humour. The coastal tracks, although overgrown and muddy, did not disappoint and we were treated to sightings of a large variety of bird life, whales and dolphins. After hiking 20km over the two days, the girls enjoyed a quick swim at Hat Head before heading back to Armidale to enjoy the rest of the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. Our next Adventurous Journey will be a Silver/ Gold hike in the second week of the September / October holidays.
Compliments, Concerns or Complaints? PLC Armidale welcomes feedback. To enable us to continually improve our school we encourage suggestions from parents, students, community members and staff.
Gold Award Congratulations to Hannah Croft who has completed and achieved her Gold Award. We look forward to your Gold Award Ceremony in Sydney.

Student Absence or Exemption from Attendance 2019 Under the NSW Education Act, school attendance is compulsory until the age of 17. As a school, we have a Duty of Care responsibility to see that students enrolled at the College are in a regular pattern of attendance unless there are special circumstances making this difficult. To streamline our process of notifying the College when a student is absent, parents are asked to bookmark and use the online forms found on the College website:http://www.plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au/current-families/notification-of-absence If permission is being sought for a period of absence longer than five consecutive school days duration a separate form is to be used, also found on the College website:http://www.plcarmidale.nsw.edu.au/current-families/request-for-leave These online forms are received by our receptionists in the Junior and Senior school with our attendance records on Edumate adjusted accordingly. Parents are asked to use these forms to ensure that notification of absence, or requests for exemption from attendance are actioned promptly.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Mrs Fiona Wake Head of Junior School Community Spirit looks like teamwork. It involves events and activities that bring members of the school community together in some way. This was certainly the case when dads and their daughters took place in a DIY Poultry Palace working bee a fortnight ago. Not only did our dads roll up their sleeves, mums took to the Global garden as well; weeding, pruning, fertilising, mulching and tidying up our garden beds ready for our winter planting. Our feathered friends, all named by the students; Candy, Peggy, Winter, Hey-Hey and Fluffy, enjoyed spending the day roaming the schoolyard under the girls’ supervision. Some even enjoyed taking a ride in the mini wheel burrows, and sticking their beaks in the business at hand as they got up close and personal to take a closer look at the handy work carried out by our palace engineers (our dads). The Poultry Palace will provide the epicentre to our Eggs-hibition that our local member, Adam Marshall will officially open …
Poultry Palace OFFICIAL Opening Friday 21 June, 2pm - ALL Welcome! It is time to officially open our Poultry Palace in the Junior School, designed by Year 6 student Milly Keeping in a design competition that was presented to our students to create enthusiasm and an appetite for Project Based Learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). Thanks to the assistance of parent volunteers, Milly’s design came to life, 2D to 3D and her coop was furnished by our five feathered friends, escorted and donated to the Junior School by Greg Mills (parent, UNE Scientist in Schools facilitator and General manager of GoAhead Business Solutions); Candy, Peggy, Winter, HeyHey and Fluffy have comfortably settled into their new home and are laying approximately 2-3 eggs a day, perhaps you may like to buy a tray? Our JS will open its doors to the community to showcase their projects, some of which are centred around an egg theme. Our Eggs-hibition will present projects of work that have resulted from the various Units of Inquiry, studied by our students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Year 5 and 6… have been busy designing packaging that will see their chocolate Easter egg survive a trip to Brisbane and back – the reward being the privilege of devouring the egg on its ‘intact’ return. We shall keep you posted! Year 3 and 4… have been studying the Earth’s surface and will display their models of the Earth’s layers, and their egg artwork at our Eggs-hibition. Year 2… have been studying mixtures, they tell me we are surrounded by them — the air we breathe, the food we eat and drink, and our personal grooming products. Chefs try mixing ingredients in different ways to make tasty combinations and interesting textures. Inquiry into mixtures has revealed for these young budding scientists that mixtures are useful for all kinds of purposes; paints, inks, glues, perfumes and detergents. Sometimes materials don’t mix and hands on investigations allowed our students to explore this concept. Kindergarten… have been growing sprout ‘eggheads’ as they learn about what living things require to grow and survive. Pre Kindergarten… have been watching butterflies hatch from a chrysalis and have taken delight in releasing them into our Global garden – they have shared in the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and have explored the garden, convinced their butterflies have taken up home amongst the vegetables because ‘they have seen them?’ Seeing is believing, come along to our Eggs-hibition and enjoy the FUN! Bring along family members, friends and spread the word… Great things are happening at PLC as we learn the 21 century skills that are preparing our students for their futures.
Eggs-hibition Colouring Competition… Each of our students have been given a colouring competition to take home and by choice enter into a colouring competition to celebrate the opening of our Eggs-hibition. If your daughter would like to enter, she can hand her completed colouring page to Emma Young at Junior School Reception by Friday 21 June.

FEATURE CLASS: YEAR 3 Year 3 have been very busy indeed this term. We have tested our athletic skills, gymnastics abilities, musical talents, and who can forget our very first NAPLAN assessment week. We were so excited to realise that we could complete our papers in the given time and it really was just another piece of work to help us with our learning. In English, we are studying the stylistic features of Roald Dahl in his imaginative writing. We have discovered that the vocabulary and punctuation choices really do shape the way that we read and make sense of the text. Learning about this as we read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has really helped us achieve our goal to “Read with expression. Don’t read like a robot.” We have a fun little song and dance to accompany this goal. Keep an eye out for improved vocabulary in our marvellous creative writing. In Science, we have been learning all about the scientific method and how to investigate questions about weathering and erosion by following procedures, designing models, making observations and carefully reporting our findings. We look forward to sharing more with you in our Eggs-hibition next week. Year 3 and Mrs Robertson

SPORTS REPORT AROUND THE GROUNDS Mr Peter Le Surf Director of Sport This week has again been a busy time for sport at PLC Armidale. It is great to see so many girls out and about enjoying all the benefits that sport brings. I would like to commend the girls on their continued sportsmanship and amazing behaviour and team spirit that they have demonstrated so far this season. You should be proud of yourselves.
Tennis I was lucky enough to accompany Sophie Bailey (Junior School) and Lauren Williams and Julia Hattingh (Year 8) to the Junior Development Series Tennis Tournament recently held in Glen Innes. Sophie B competed in the Under 12 category and finished in 2nd place which is a fantastic result, considering Sophie is only 10 years old.
Congratulations
Julia had a tougher time and had a few hard matches before getting back on track to finish 3rd in the under 14. Her final match of the day was against Lauren which she won, however this still placed Lauren 4th.
Congratulations to the Equestrian Team for their success at the Coonabarabran Event.
The girls played extremely well in tough, cold and windy conditions. They will be a force in coming years.

Our PLC Armidale Equestrian Team had some of the best results that they have had in years at Coonabarabran. Our Equestrian manager, Amanda Kennett said: “ I just wanted to congratulate the girls on their overall performance, behaviour and team spirit during this year’s Expo. For those of you that experienced the event for the first time, I sincerely hope that you enjoyed every moment. It is a long week and horses, ponies and parents get tired by Tuesday afternoon, so I just wanted to acknowledge the way you all represented your school, right down to the end of presentation on Tuesday. Every one of you girls should be super proud of yourselves. Each of you are on your own journey with your horses, each of you at different levels, with different challenges to overcome and different learning paths. I believe that regardless of results, you all excelled in your individual journeys and partnerships with your horses. Every horse and rider combination is a work in progress, no matter how far you get, there is always more to do and learn.” - Amanda Kennett

JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORT Mrs Lucy Donaldson Junior School Sport Coordinator The long weekend was a nice break from the normal hustle and bustle of Saturday mornings, but of course, I am looking forward to getting back into it this weekend, as are the girls!
CIS Cross Country I would like to wish two of our Junior School Girls, Kate Loxley (Year 4) and Sophie Bailey (Year 5), who are heading down to Sydney to compete in the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Cross Counrty Carnival on Thursday, the best of luck! An outstanding effort and we are all so proud of you!
Hockey This year we have five Junior School Hockey Teams in the local competition and they are really enjoying building their skills, competing, and of course, the social aspect of team sport! After school trainings have been a positive change from lunch time trainings, allowing more time for a more productive training session. U9’s Tigers and Panthers - Who would have known that some of these girls have never played hockey before?! Our Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 players have played some great hockey and having so much fun! U11’s Lions and Jaguars - Our Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 girls have been playing some spectacular hockey this season. The Lion’s have only had one loss and they are sitting at the top of the table and the Jaguars haven’t had a loss yet. Each week we see more and more improvement and skill development. U13’s Lightning - Also containing Senior School girls in year 7 and 8, the U13’s are a relatively young side. They are really starting to come together as a team and played an amazing game against Harlies (competition leaders) to win 4-2 in their last game. They are only getting better and better!
Representative Sport Representative hockey (New England), netball (New England) and cross counrty (CIS) Juinior School girls’. From Left to Right: Zoe Webb, Sophie Young (netball), Kate Loxley, Sophie Bailey (cross country) and Macey Wake and Elsie Wake (hockey). Super stars in the making!! Just a friendly reminder to please remember to let you daughter’s coaches know or myself, if they will be absent from training or games.

PLC PATHWAYS Chris Spencer Director of Pathways Boarders’ weekend is an opportunity for girls to get home for a few days in the middle of the term, but for International students last weekend was a reunion for past Pathways’ students. A number of past students returned to us to reminisce about their time at PLC Pathways and to share their experiences in their new Sydney schools. Current Pathways’ students had the opportunity to learn from these girls’ experiences and glean some insights into mainstream school life at PLC Armidale and our partner schools in Sydney. In all the discussions and sharing, a common thread appeared which was very encouraging – our International students feel very cared for and well prepared by the Pathways’ program and in the boarding environment. All the returnees are in boarding schools and found that the experience of being gently introduced into an Australian girls boarding school was invaluable in helping them to adapt to their new lives. We spent some time doing “lessons”, but there was also fun to be had. The girls cooked their own hot-pot dinner, gave themselves facials and had a bit of a karaoke contest and a dance-off. Sunday was the perfect day to visit Coffs Harbour, a favourite day-trip destination for our girls. And at sunset there was a bit of a water fight on the beach to bring the day to a close.

PASTORAL CARE Paula Goode Pastoral Care Coordinator Keep Learning Most of us are aware that we should be taking care of our wellbeing, but when it comes to improving our overall state of contentment, comfort and health, it can be hard to know where to start. The five steps to wellbeing were developed by the New Economics Foundation in 2008, and can help give you some ideas on how to improve your wellbeing, and the wellbeing of others. Evidence suggests that making small improvements to wellbeing can decrease some mental health problems and help people to flourish. They say we learn something new every day, and science is telling us this sentiment is important for our wellbeing. Whether it’s signing up for a new hobby, rediscovering something you used to love or taking an opportunity at work or school, learning new things boosts your confidence and this is great for your wellbeing. Learning new things is a good way to keep your mind active and give you a sense of achievement, which is great for your wellbeing. There are many benefits to learning, it can help you feel motivated, engaged and boost your self-esteem, as well as add to your skillset. There are plenty of ways to learn at school, work or home: • Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. • Set up a group or class where you can learn something with your friends and colleagues, for example a language or a craft, they may even be able to teach you some new skills; • Find out about your friends and colleagues’ interests and skills outside of school, and consider asking them if they could teach you about them; • Research something you’ve always wanted to learn about; • Read a book in your lunch break; • Learn a new word and try to use it at school and home. • Take your learning outdoors with an activity like growing your own vegetables or nature photography. • Become a citizen scientist and learn about how you can contribute to scientific research to help protect our natural environment. • The cold weather is also the perfect time to learn about planting some natives in the garden. The list is endless, so set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

POSITIVE PARENTING
PASTORAL CARE
insights Encouraging healthy attitudes towards women by Dr Rosina McAlpine
Recent events and current statistics highlight that as a nation we have a serious problem when it comes to domestic violence. While there’s no easy solution, together, we can do our part to stop violence against women. If you’re a parent or guardian, you can play an important role. Disrespect towards girls can begin in childhood, and we can break the cycle when we teach our children to be respectful and caring right from the start. As parents, we have three main jobs: First, to love our children and build a strong lifetime bond Second, to keep them safe from harm until they can do that for themselves Third, to teach them all the skills they need to thrive in life and to make a positive difference in the world
Life skills approach to raising children So what life skills do children need to learn when it comes to the issue of preventing violence against girls and women? As parents, we can talk with our kids about: Behaving respectfully towards others Communicating their needs using words and without the need to hit, snatch or shout Managing their emotions and their behaviours so as not to ‘fly off the handle’
Start the conversation about respect early Start by responding to your child calmly when they are disrespectful to others. The following three-step communication approach can be used from early childhood through to teen years. Let’s put it into practice. If a boy is making fun of his sister or a female friend: 1. STOP: Respond calmly rather than react asking him to stop the teasing. 2. EMPATHISE: Invite your son to see the behaviour through the eyes of his sister. ‘How do you think your sister/friend feels right now?’

3. EDUCATE: Provide options such as ignoring his sister or friend if she’s annoying him or providing an appropriate social script he can use to communicate his thoughts such as, “I find it annoying when you don’t share the computer”
It’s a marathon, not a sprint When it comes to gaining academic knowledge and learning skills, parents know it takes years of consistent effort from childhood through to adolescence. In the same way, parents can take a long-term approach to teaching life skills beginning right from toddler to teen.
Parents lead the way Parents are powerful teachers and role models for the next generation. We can teach our children how to be respectful and kind to each other. By stopping disrespect and violence at the start we can play a crucial role in putting an end to violence against girls and women.
Resources you can use The Stop it at the Start campaign provides parents, family members and others with information and practical resources to self-reflect, and talk to boys and girls aged 10-17 about being respectful and caring. You can find videos, guides and other resources to help you have conversations with your children at www.respect.gov.au/resources/talking-about-respect. There is so much we can do in families to develop healthy attitudes toward women. Through modelling and teaching we can change entrenched attitudes and behaviours that will put an end to the cycle of violence against women.
