FROM THE PRINCIPAL Mrs Nicola Taylor Principal Term 2, with only 9 weeks almost seemed over before it began, yet it was replete with a range of learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. One of the highlights of my role, is the opportunity to share in classroom teaching and student learning. Recently, this has consisted in visiting a range of the Year 12 classes where students are undertaking a major independent project as a component of the course; taking part in a panel that our Stage 4 students pitching their Integrated Learning Projects to, in the hope that some of their school beautification or sustainability may gain traction, and culminating in the most delightful afternoon spent taking part in the Junior School “Eggs-hibition.” In each of these contexts, from the older students to the younger, it is exciting to see girls of a diverse range of abilities and capabilities so engaged in their learning. The Year 12 girls articulated the concept behind their major projects with a level of intellectual rigour and sophistication befitting someone much older, whilst the enthusiasm of our Kinder girls explaining how they grew their ‘egg heads’ was just as beguiling. Across the college, throughout the subjects and year groups, the implementation of the Learning Journey@PLC Armidale has been evident. In an age where entertainment, ease and fun have currency, it is encouraging to see the girls finding satisfaction in rigorous pursuits, challenging tasks and academic endeavour. Even more so when these girls are just as able to demonstrate prowess on a sports field and defend the indefensible debate topic as they are to launch a student led magazine (The Scope) and be nominated for an art-prize! Congratulations to the PLC Armidale Philosophon Team who were named overall winners in the inaugural regional competition this week. Special congratulations to Chiyo Brown (Year 8) named Most Promising Female Philosopher, Phoebe Imberger who won the Speed Philosophy Challenge and Bethany Eickhoff awarded the Senior Philosopher of the Day prize. Thank you to Mrs Belson for providing the girls with this very rewarding and demanding opportunity. Congratulations to Pip Constable (Year 9) who attended the NSW State Hockey Championships held in Wagga Wagga last weekend and has been selected in the 2020 U15s NSW State Squad. Congratulations also to Imogen Dellow (Year 10) and Gracie Martin (Year 11) who have been in Townsville this week taking part in the 2019 Oceania Athletics Championships. At last count, Gracie Martin was awarded a Bronze Medal in the U20’s Women’s 400m event whilst Imogen Dellow was awarded a Silver Medal in the 4x400m Relay event. Friday 2 August will see the final awards in the UNE Let’s Hang It Art Competition being determined. Special congratulations to Maggie Zhen (Year 6), Lilly Gully (Year7), Bethany Eickoff (Year 9), Sarah Hughes (Year 11) and Ria Kealey (Year 12) who have all been nominated as finalists in the 2019 University of New England School Acquisitive Art Prize. These works along with others in the competition will be on display at NERAM from 2 to 18 August. Term 3 will be replete with many other opportunities to see students work first hand. A Term 3 Event Calendar is being sent home to families over the next couple of weeks to assist with advanced planning. Please keep 9 August free especially, for the PLC Drought Relief Benefit Concert. We have Lazenby Hall to fill so friends and family are all welcome. Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing Winter holiday break.

NACEL Australasia www.nacel.com.au
Bring the world into your home: Hosting an overseas student is a wonderful way to bring another part of the world into your own home. It provides your Australian family with the opportunity to observe and hear the story of a young French person who is a long way from home and keen to experience life in Australia. The students come from all parts of France, which includes the regional areas and have varied interests. We would match a student to a family at your school with similar interests. Nacel Australia’s commitment to social responsibility now extends to the host family to assist them in providing their generous student accommodation. The girls who attended CSIRO discovered the vast range of careers in agricultural science areas, ranging from farm and technical support to research. Dr Sonja Dominik took the girls on a tour of the CSIRO farm and introduced them to a range of current projects including animal sensors, genetics and animal health and welfare. The girls who attended UNE participated in a range of activities, led by Dr Debbie Bower and Dr Mary McMillan, including classifying ecology samples and relating this to water quality and undertaking brain dissections. This was followed by a Q & A session with a panel of female scientists from a range of disciplines. These women discussed their lives, what led them to their current careers and the challenges they overcame along the way.

SENIOR SCHOOL Mrs Lorna Ahern Head of Teaching and Learning As we end this term, I thought I would look ahead to one of the important Year 12 calendar events in Term 3 - the HSC Trial Examinations and write down some study tips. Everyone feels nervous about taking exams. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your revision time and keep those nerves under control. It is important to remember that an examination is a test of learning, not memory. Examiners want to see evidence that you have drawn on your knowledge to develop a reasoned argument, rather than replicate course notes and textbook facts. Revision should be a process of consolidating understanding rather than cramming as much information as possible before the morning of the exam.
Study skills 1. WHERE TO STUDY: •C reating good conditions to study can help you make the most of the time you spend revising. Here are some suggestions: • F ind a quiet place to study and make sure you are sitting comfortably •M ake sure your desk is well lit •K eep background noise to a minimum •A void studying in an area where there will be distractions (like televisions!) •H ave everything you need to do your revision to hand before you start. 2. HOW TO STUDY: There is no ‘right way’ to revise, as long as the method you choose enables you to gain a solid grasp of key facts and consolidate your knowledge. Some students are happy to read their classroom notes from start to finish, others prefers to simplify the information as much as possible, turning everything into skeleton notes, diagrams or mnemonics. In practice, most students find that mixing techniques suits the varied nature of the subjects being revised, and provides essential variety when studying. • Set your goal: Read the course overview to understand what the course will cover and how it will be scored. Identify your goal in concrete terms and put it in writing to strengthen your resolve. • Manage your time: Time management skills can help you take control of your study workload, achieve more, and stress out less. There are many ways to make time work with you, instead of against you. Find out assignment due dates and quiz/test/exam dates and mark them in your study planner in advance. This way you will be able to avoid social commitments during pre-exam periods. Minimize distractions and keep your priorities straight. Focus on your goal of getting the most out of your schooling. Schedule social activities around your study schedule. • Identify your learning style: This self-knowledge can help you make more effective use of your time. Remember, your learning style may be quite different from that of family members and friends. Adapting your study method to suit your own natural style will enable you to produce powerful results in less time. • Develop a study plan: For each course, figure out how much time you will need to spend outside of class, in order to keep up and in order to do well. Plan a study schedule that allows you to stay in control of the academic workload. • Keep up with reading: Particularly current issues, staying up-to-date in terms of your reading is critical to your success. When you attend a lecture without having completed the required reading, you lose a valuable opportunity to add to your understanding. • Develop effective note-taking techniques: A variety of note-taking styles can help you record key information and see the bigger picture in terms of subject matter. Good note-taking strategies can help you make the most of the time spent reading from textbooks and attending classes. • Create mind maps: Mind maps are graphic organizers, which can help you summarize vital information from lessons and textbooks. Each topic can be condensed onto a page; each chapter can be encapsulated onto a larger map. Eventually, you can develop a mind map to review the key sections of each course and get a broad view of how each topic relates to the others. Then, to review before an exam, see if you can reconstruct the map. In this way, you can test yourself to see if you can recall key terms, factors, reasons and examples. Most importantly though, have a break and look after yourselves both physically and mentally and remember to support each other and to seek help and guidance from the College. We are here to support you.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Mrs Fiona Wake Head of Junior School As the term comes to an end, I would like to thank you for your commitment to PLC Armidale and your ever willingness to support the Junior School across all of their endeavours. I often get to the end of a busy term and reflect upon, first and for most the learning, the students’ engagement with the curriculum and their interactions with each other. I tick off some goals, redefine others and set new targets in attempt to improve what we do and what we stand for at PLC Armidale. At PLC Armidale, WE DO SCHOOL! I am so thankful to Nicola Taylor for her leadership and the direction she sets for the College. Events across the College do not always happen randomly, rather are very much a part of a strategic direction set to improve student learning and nurture our students from a pastoral care perspective.
School Reports School Reports will be issued at the end of the term. If you have any concerns relating to the information presented relating to your daughter’s progress, please make a time to see your daughter’s teacher or make an appointment to see me. Parent Teacher Interviews will be scheduled for Term 3. This is the perfect opportunity for your teacher to elaborate in more detail your daughter’s strengths, areas for future focus and her commitment to learning. Please never feel you have to wait for these times to communicate your concerns or if you require clarification regarding aspects of your daughters leaning. On a final note, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful three-week break. I look forward to touching base again soon and sharing in your holiday experiences. Term 3 resumes on Tuesday 23 July.
JUNIOR SCHOOL FOCUS - CHRISTIAN STUDIES Christian Studies classes with Ms Leahy and Mrs Repp have been focused on Old Testament history this term. We have learned about how Israel was ruled by kings and whether the kings lived God’s way or their own way and looking at the promises made about the perfect forever King Jesus. We have enjoyed looking at the Bible passages together and creating different crafts that help us remember what we have learned. Balloon memory verse games with Mrs Repp are lots of fun. We have also enjoyed looking at the big roll out Bible Timeline to see the order different events occur in. Kinder are enjoying the addition of ‘Story stones’ as part of their Christian Studies lessons. Story stones are rocks that are decorated with different items, such as a crowd, a boat, people, cross; that regularly occur in our Bible stories. After we have read a section of the Bible, each student is then able to choose a story stone that was part of the story and then we retell the Bible story together using our different stones. It is a joy watching the students understanding grow using this different technique.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Mrs Fiona Wake Head of Junior School Our Eggs-hibition was Eggs-raordinary! In the previous feature of the Lions Roar, I mentioned the importance of teamwork. The Eggs-hibition last Friday was a fabulous display of teamwork, community spirit and a display of the wonderful learning that is taking place in our classes. Pulling off an event such as this takes a huge amount of effort behind the scenes. I am grateful for all those people who pulled together to make this day special for our students. The eggs-citement was obvious, the smiles on the faces of our little ones makes events such as these all worth it. Member for Northern Tablelands, Mr Adam Marshall MP, did pop in on Tuesday to speak with the students which allowed the opportunity for them to present their projects and results of their inquiries. Mr Marshall interacted well with the students and communicated in a way that presented BIG ideas in an age appropriate way. And… of course he inspected the PLC Poultry Palace. I have been asked, “Mrs Wake, what do you think about a Junior School rabbit?” I have been assured it would only require a small extension of the Poultry Palace. Mmm… Chapter 2.

Poetry in Action Students from Year 7 to Year 12 were excited to have ‘Poetry in Action’ visit PLC Armidale on the last day of term. The touring group of actors performed two very different and engaging shows for our appreciative audiences. Years 7 - 9 enjoyed ‘The Power of Poetry’; delving deeply into rhyme, simile, metaphor, assonance, alliteration, form, structure, theme and iambic pentameter. It was a light hearted journey through poets such as Banjo Paterson, Allan Ginsberg, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Shakespeare, Eminem, Gerard Manly Hopkins and many others! YEAR 9 SAID: “I enjoyed the enthusiasm and how their performance really engaged the audience.” “ I loved how they used words we have been looking at in class so that I could actually see them being put into action right in front of my eyes. I suppose that is why they are called POETRY IN ACTION.“ Years 10 - 12 explored the difficult subject matter of Wilfred Owen’s War Poetry, with a higher level of text based analysis suited to the senior year levels. Poems featured throughout this show include Spring Offensive, Dulce et Decroum Est, Parable of the Old Man and the Young, Mental Cases, Disabled, Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility. This was a moving, and poignant journey through Owen’s poetry of the World War one. YEAR 10 SAID: “ Year 10 English had studied Wilfred Owens poems Dulce et Decorum Est, Disabled, and Mental cases in Term 2. Studying these made it easier to understand and watch todays performance.” “I liked the acting and the poems used. I like how they engage with the audience, and bring the poems to life.”
