"A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares " by Krystal Sutherland, is a thought-provoking novel about facing fears and coping with loss. Esther Solar ’ s family has always lived under a curse, one curse that differed for each member of the family. A curse that ruled their lives and decisions. Esther comes up with an ingenious solution to write a list of small fears, so that she can avoid them at all costs. However, when her old best friend Jonah returns to town, she is challenged to face her fears and ‘ see the beauty beyond fear ’ .
All in all, this novel is an enjoyable read. I loved that it described unique events and how the characters developed and stayed true to their personalities. My favourite part of the story was Esther ’ s reaction to the clips Jonah had uploaded to YouTube. She thought of herself ‘like her edges were soft and her colour was dim… but not in the video. In the video she was whole and solid’ . Her whole self-image changes from that one-minute clip. I feel every teen will love this book. Murder mystery enthusiasts will also enjoy it, as there is one woven into the story, without it being the focus of the novel. Overall, I loved this book and recommend it for everyone.
