We celebrated a National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the nation’s top honor for museums and libraries. This prestigious award is given in recognition of community impact. First Lady Michelle Obama presented the Library with the award, which traveled to each branch over the course of the year.

awards We celebrated a five-star rating by Library Journal. In the category of libraries with budgets of $30 million, only five libraries nationwide were given this rating. We also celebrated a Power Partner Award from Duke Energy after completing the Phase II Energy Retrofit Project at the Main Library, saving energy and money.

levy

RENEWED

We celebrated a renewed levy with an 80 percent favorable vote, the highest in the state. The renewal extends the 1 mill levy for an additional 10 years. It will provide an estimated $181 million in funding, which is crucial to the Library’s continued operation.

construction NEW

We celebrated new construction. The Library launched a $11.7-million facilities initiative which included the construction of two new buildings. The communities of Reading and St. Bernard will benefit from new larger branch libraries in 2015.

renovations

We celebrated renovations which, coupled with the new construction, is the largest branch facilities plan in more than 25 years. The Cox House in Clifton will be renovated to replace the current rental location, and the historic Avondale Branch will be renovated to improve accessibility.

usage

RECORD

We celebrated record usage. It’s no surprise our system is consistently among the top 10 across the country in circulation with more than 17.8 million items loaned and 1.4 million digital downloads. Nearly half a million people attended our 23,178 programs, while more than 1.8 million computer sessions were provided to our customers.
