BEYOND THE HORIZON Please Touch Museum 速 | Annual Report 2013
“The learning a child experiences in these most formative years creates a foundation that lasts for a lifetime.” Montessori Educator
O
ver the past few years, Please Touch Museum (PTM) has undergone both a significant expansion and a large-scale move to historic landmark, Memorial Hall. As one of the country’s premier children’s museums and a vital local asset, PTM welcomed 580,000 visitors in 2013, and provided invaluable educational opportunities for 8,657 of the most vulnerable children in our community. Our economic impact has grown exponentially. The Museum is responsible for $20 million in household income and $3.5 million in city and state tax revenue.
“The PTM activities were fun and energetic. The students look forward to their visits each week. Teacher discusses Books to Know, Books to Grow program
Throughout 2013, we continued our commitment to the youngest members of our community, delivering high quality programming to an underserved population that was especially responsive to the needs of children as well as providing opportunities for all young learners with specific focus on accessibility, the arts, and school readiness. With generous support from our partners, our museum access programs provided free or a reduced rate for over 43,000 children and their families. This accounted for 8% of the Museum’s overall attendance.
“PTM’s rich and vibrant educational programming offers children not only a chance to play, but a chance to be their very best selves. Behavioral Specialist
PTM has a long history of developing innovative approaches that reach out to children who have limited early learning opportunities and resources. We cultivated partnerships and enlisted the support of local artists and performers, corporations, civic partners, and neighbors to strengthen our community. This year, we partnered with more than 50 local and national businesses to fulfill our mission of enriching the lives of children by creating learning opportunities through play.
The Museum continued to be an award-winning destination resource for children and families throughout the Philadelphia region. PTM received the 2013 International Children’s Museum Award from Hands On! International and the European Museum Academy, citing our community and art-based programs. We were also honored by the Historical Carousel Association for the restoration of our well preserved, 1908 Dentzel Carousel, originally located in Philadelphia’s Woodside Park.
“PTM provides so many learning opportunities that our family can do together and my son loves everything! He really gets to express himself in different creative ways. Mom of PTM Member Family
In the life of every organization, there are moments when an institution must look beyond the horizon and plan for what lies ahead. In August, Laura Foster stepped down after four years as President & CEO to pursue other interests. Laura’s contribution to the Museum spanned more than 20 years of service. In the upcoming year, the Museum will celebrate five years at Memorial Hall. As well, we will launch the new Strategic Plan that will chart a course for institutional sustainability. The Plan will also ensure that PTM continues to be a place with vibrant, engaging environments, where out next generation of learners, our youngest citizens, are prepared for the challenges that lay ahead, just beyond the horizon of early childhood. Sincerely,
Lynn McMaster, President & CEO/Sally W. Stetson, Chairperson
“Please Touch Museum’s School Readiness initiative helps level the field for children in vulnerable circumstances. We are excited to contribute toward a program doing so much to close the achievement gap and permit all children an equal chance to succeed.” Kelly Balthazor | Director, Community Relations, US Airways
A Solid Foundation
O
ne of the most important functions of early education is preparing children for school. Through the programming and resources offered at Please Touch Museum, children not only explore the world around them, but also learn the value of working with others. This year, Stories in Schools, our mobile interactive literacy programming served 13 schools/childcare centers, 53 classrooms and over 1,000 students.
Kindergarten Mixer – a celebratory event for families with children entering kindergarten—reached over 1,300 people, including more than 400 kindergartners who entered kindergarten in 2013. Our community event, Passport to Kindergarten helped increase awareness of kindergarten registration and served nearly 150 people from across Philadelphia.
“The Play Without Boundaries initiative constitutes a step in the right direction for museums. The accommodations this initiative provides have helped thousands of families enjoy the full benefits of the Museum in a supportive and understanding environment. We commend Please Touch Museum and are happy to give our support. Nancy Wingo | Executive Director Hamilton Family Foundation
Access for All
W
e are one of 80 museums in the nation offering learning experiences for children with special needs. Our Play Without Boundaries initiative ensures that our activities and programming are as accessible as possible for children with special needs. A cornerstone of the initiative are special evening and early morning access events. In 2013 we welcomed more than 3,200 children and their families to these events. This initiative is generously supported by the Hamilton Family Foundation, Pfizer, Inglis Foundation, and Widener Memorial Foundation in Aid of Handicapped Children.
“As schools and other early learning centers suffer continual cutbacks, institutions like Please Touch Museum become more important as a resource for family learning.” Virginia and Harvey Kimmel PTM Donors
Inspiring Young Learners
I
n 2013, PTM continued to expand our special programming to ensure that young visitors enjoyed engaging and interactive experiences while filling the gap left due to the declining presence of the arts in school. Literacy, theater, art, music, and dance, took center stage in
the programming, with over 1, 900 family programs this year. PTM’s theater program extended its reach to new audiences with the debut of the original highly interactive production, President Ulysses S. Grant and the Great Banana Mystery at the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts while a new Musician-In-Residence program expanded available music education in the community. Our arts programming was generously supported by the Connelly Foundation, The Boeing Company, the Virginia and Harvey Kimmel Arts and Education Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation, and the Walter J. Miller Trust. The Presser Foundation generously supported new music initiatives, and the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation supported literacy programming.
