PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM Annual Report 2014
ii | 1 | PleaseTouchMuseum.org
To Our Loyal Patrons, At the close of this fiscal year, we are reflecting on the work we accomplished serving hundreds of thousands of children and families in the Greater Philadelphia Region in 2014. The value and importance of what we do each day is reaffirmed by our visitors, peers and generous donors. We are committed to ensuring that the Children’s Museum of Philadelphia remains vibrant in our region’s landscape. Bolstered by the support of so many, Please Touch Museum reached many significant milestones and, over the past year, was recognized with prestigious awards. In addition to welcoming our three millionth visitor and celebrating five years at Memorial Hall, we were recognized by Condé Nast Traveler as one of 10 of the Best Museums for Kids in 2014. Other honors included being recognized by Hands On! International and the European Museum Academy with the 2013 Children’s Museum Award and the 2014 Best in Heritage Award from Europa Nostra in partnership with the International Committee on Museums. This international recognition reinforced our position as a model 21st century learning experience for children. We continued to spearhead initiatives that provided a high-quality experience for our visitors, regardless of socio-economic factors. Just this year, our community learning programs expanded to serve nearly 10,000 students and provided free or discounted admission to more than 25,000 people. With a grant provided by the Institute of Museums and Library Services, we completed the first half of a three-year project to create an app that will build capacity for children and their parents as they prepare for school. We expanded our infant and toddler programming to provide opportunities to engage with our youngest of visitors in new, creative ways. It is equally important to update you on the progress of the negotiations regarding settlement of the Museum’s debt. Over the past year, discussions were active and we continued to explore opportunities to resolve the long term debt; however, a settlement was not reached during this reporting period. A detailed organizational business and development plan has been created to chart a course for the future. Please Touch Museum is a place where lifelong learning begins and curiosity is curated and encouraged. We have much work to do, but are grateful to all those who continue to support us to help ensure our institution has the opportunity for future successes in the years to come. Sincerely,
Sally Stetson Chairperson
Lynn McMaster President & CEO
| 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | Touchpoints
Please Touch Museum by the Numbers Please Touch Museum continues to grow and evolve in positive directions. Lynn McMaster was appointed President & CEO and immediately began implementation of the organization’s freshly adopted strategic plan. The most vital elements of this renewed direction include the Museum’s commitment to its historic home, reinvesting in the museum experience through exhibitions and programming and expanding partnerships in the community and beyond. PTM also established new committees and internal processes to provide efficiency and clarity to daily operations, including the implementation of a performance management review system in order to create a collaborative workplace that values its employees as much as its visitors.

Preparing Young Minds School Readiness:
Please Touch Museum’s programming is committed to providing children and families with a playful learning platform that ensures academic and professional success in later life with a particular focus on low-income, at-risk and special needs children. PTM believes it is critical that Museum resources support vulnerable children and communities in an effort to assist them in closing the achievement gap. This process starts early. Please Touch Museum’s School Readiness programming assists thousands of families in the transition to kindergarten. Programming such as Passport to Kindergarten and Kindergarten Mixer provides essential resources for families of soon-to-be
kindergartners, including the opportunity to meet kindergarten teachers and explore a real classroom. Passport to Kindergarten and Kindergarten Mixer are supported in part by US Airways and UPS and, in 2014, the programs served 2,000 children and their families. PTM programming is not merely limited to the Museum or community. In 2014, PTM was awarded a $102,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to develop a Start School Smart app and website to support the kindergarten process. This new app will leverage PTM’s existing School Readiness program and will interface with five regional community organizations to develop content to support parents and children in this transitional milestone.
ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Literacy Initiatives:
|
Touchpoints
Since its inception, Please Touch Museum has been committed to instilling in children and families a love of books, literacy and learning. In this endeavor, Please Touch Museum – both within and outside its walls -- provides a diverse roster of literacy programming including Books to Know, Books to Grow, Crawl Into a Book, Early Bookworms, and many more. PTM’s literacy initiatives are generously supported by Comcast Corporation, Universal Health Recovery Centers, Inc., Susquehanna Bank, Harmelin Media, Teva Pharmaceuticals, USA, Wells Fargo Bank and ViroPharma Incorporated. In 2014, PTM’s literacy programs served more than 30,000 children – in the museum and in the community.

Play with Purpose PTM offers exceptional daily programs that connect children to transformational experiences and ideas. This robust roster includes the creative dramatics, visual arts, music and health/ wellness and STEM/STEAM, all which serve to support the development of the whole child. PTM’s Play with Purpose programming is supported in part by the Merck Company Foundation and the PNC Foundation. Without a doubt, one of the most unique components of PTM’s programming is the Please Touch Playhouse Theater – one of the only performing arts venues in the region catering exclusively to young children. Each year, the Theater showcases six original productions. In 2014, the Theater presented its newest endeavor, President Ulysses S. Grant and the Great Centennial Banana Mystery, which was staged as part of the Experience Centennial Now Initiative. Experience Centennial Now was generously supported by the Connelly Foundation.
ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Please Touch Garden:
This year marked a new PTM venture – the Please Touch Garden. Conceived as an outdoor classroom, the pilot garden was supported with a generous grant from the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation. Located in a space next to PTM’s outdoor café seating area, this 750 square-foot patch is currently home to a kitchen garden. Future plans are being developed which include creating an interactive, seasonal, outdoor classroom with programming focusing on botany, healthy eating, recycling and sustainability.
|
Portable Play Program:
Touchpoints
Investing in local communities surrounding the Museum remains a continuing focus. In this endeavor, Please Touch Museum’s Portable Play Program offers fee-based workshops which travel to local schools, libraries, agencies and recreation centers. The Portable Play Program utilizes lesson-based kits which reflect the look and feel of a visit to the Museum. The program serves a dual purpose – allowing children who may not be able to visit the Museum a similar experience and/or preparing children for their future visit to PTM. In 2014, Portable Play delivered 116 programs to almost 2,000 children and their families.
