PTM was thrilled to receive a generous grant of $6,000 from PECO Green Region. In partnership with the Natural Lands Trust, the region’s leading land conservation organization, PECO Green Region supports environmental projects that plan for, protect and improve open land in Southeastern Pennsylvania. On July 30th, PECO President and CEO Craig L. Adams presented 2013 Green Region grants to PTM and other Philadelphia-based organizations at Memorial Hall. Other recipients included Fairmount Park Conservancy, West Philadelphia Coalition for Neighborhood Schools, and Friends of Poquessing Watershed. Across all four organizations, the grants will support the development of “green” playgrounds and educational areas for children, as well as the restoration of stream banks along the Delaware River. Specifically, PTM plans to use these funds to support a garden space on the Museum’s lawn to be filled with plants indigenous to the Philadelphia region. The Museum’s ACES students and partners at Teens 4 Good will nurture the space and incorporate it into Museum programs. Not only will the produce be used in the Please Taste Café, but the green space will be an active programming site where young visitors are further enriched by outdoor open-ended, process-driven play. For more information on how to support Please Touch Garden, please contact Stephanie Lim Capello, VP of Development, at 215-581-3164 or scapello@pleasetouchmuseum.org.

On Saturday August 3rd, Please Touch Museum hosted its 12th annual Kindergarten Mixer and welcomed over 400 future kindergartners and their families to celebrate the beginning of their journey into school! Kindergarten Mixer is a free event just for families with children starting Kindergarten in the Philadelphia region. Kindergarten Mixer is presented by US Airways with additional support from UPS. “This event helps families get the school year started on the right foot by giving them a jumping-off point to have bigger conversations about kindergarten” said Leslie Walker, VP of Community Learning. During the event, guests were able to explore the Museum, make art in the program room, make name tags with Kindergarten teacher volunteers, and watch the “Pinky Prepares for Kindergarten” show in the Please Touch Playhouse. Guests also had the opportunity to connect with local resources like the Free Library of Philadelphia, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. The future kindergartners received a give-away backpack filled with books and school supplies. The evening culminated with an exciting Kindergarten-themed pep rally in Hamilton Hall.

Member Spotlight: The Cox Family

Q: You have been members for many years, what about your experience has prompted you to continue being a member at Please Touch Museum? A. There is nothing like Please Touch Museum in this area where kids can play, interact with other children, and learn new things. We especially enjoy the Please Touch Playhouse Theater and look forward to each new production. Our youngest, Kyle, usually convinces us to visit the Kids Store on the way out too! We visit other museums in the Philadelphia area and always joke to Kyle, “Remember, behave, this is the Do Not Touch Museum and not the Please Touch Museum!” With three children, the membership is extremely cost effective and we like that we can keep up with everything happening here through the newsletter. Q: Is there one PTM event in particular that your family looks forward to each year? A: It’s a tie between the Storybook Ball and Monster Mash. Both events are super fun, have great entertainment, and yummy food. We also really enjoyed both the Mother’s and Father’s Day breakfast this year as well. Q: PTM is celebrating 5 years at Memorial Hall this year, what would be your birthday wish for PTM’s next 5 years? Happy Birthday! Our wish is that the Museum continues to grow, flourish and draw more and more families to visit this Philadelphia treasure. Our children are young for so short a time and Please Touch Museum helps create wonderful memories that will last them a lifetime.
