Annual Report 2012

Dear Friends, Even as we pause briefly to review the past year in this 2012 Annual Report, Plimoth Plantation is moving forward. Each day brings a new opportunity to find innovative ways to engage and interact with our guests and members. Our educational mission continues to shape our guest-focused approach as we illuminate the stories of America’s past and make them relevant for contemporary audiences. While a visit to our historical sites can be an exciting and enriching encounter with history, so too can a sustained conversation online or through social media further refine and deepen people’s understanding of 17th-century Colonial and Native American history, culture and life ways. As Plimoth Plantation positions itself as a leader in multidisciplinary inquiry on the 17th-century Atlantic world, incorporating history, the arts, humanities and sciences, our guiding objective is to offer a guest experience that is second to none. The report on the following pages highlights a few of the enhancements made to our programs and exhibits over the past year. We offered more diverse ways of approaching and understanding the remarkable stories of the people – Native and European – who lived along these shores in the 1600s. Our visitors’ response to these efforts has been positive. We are pleased to report that the 2012 Guest Satisfaction Survey administered by The Morey Group, a national market research firm specializing in the needs of cultural organizations, revealed our highest ratings yet. In addition, Plimoth Plantation was a proud recipient of a Premier Tourism Attraction award, presented by Governor Deval Patrick, at the Massachusetts Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism. In the years ahead, Plimoth Plantation will continue to grow as a place that preserves and illuminates the past while providing enriching and enjoyable experiences for people today. We are ever-mindful that this is your Museum. The many board members, donors, museum members and volunteers who enable our progress deserve our boundless thanks. Your generosity, interest and support are an inspiration to us. It is your investment in Plimoth Plantation that allows the Museum to continue to touch the lives of millions of people, young and old, through historical insights and cultural understanding. Thank you for making Plimoth Plantation part of their lives and your own.

Year In Review 2012 In addition to traditional favorites like Strawberry Thanksgiving, Colonial weddings, Wampanoag football and evenings aboard Mayflower II, the Museum’s historical sites featured new structures, more guided tours and innovative programs including scheduled offerings of 17th-century English music and dance. The new 40-foot bark house (neshwetu) at the Wampanoag Homesite is the largest reproduction Native house in the Northeast. The work of building the house began with gathering cedar for the frame. Then it was off to Maryland where our Museum staff peeled 8,000 square feet of bark off poplar trees that were being milled there. The bark forms the outside of the house. The Museum’s Native artisans made the mats, baskets, pots and other reproduction artifacts for the interior. The neshwetu can seat over 100 schoolchildren and is the perfect size for field trips. In the 17th-century English Village, Colonial artisans worked on a new bake house, prepared the frame and cut thatch for the Francis Cooke house which was under construction throughout the year. For one week in August, the Village program moved from the year 1627 to 1624 – a period when Plymouth could easily have been destroyed by the religious and political strife fomented by Rev. John Lyford. Associate Professor James Weiss of Boston College’s Department of Theology consulted on the reenactment and brought his expertise to the role of Lyford. Special programming aboard Mayflower II celebrated St. George’s Day and the 1957 crossing. Expanding on a Museum tradition of excellence in re-creating the 17th-century material world, the study, exhibition and reproduction of historic textiles thrives at Plimoth Plantation. The 2012 Spring Conference schedule included The Fabric of Our Lives: Linen and Wool Processing in the 17th-Century featuring ten onsite weavers, spinners and carders; and the lecture Leather Trades in 17th-Century England. Native traditions and cultural heritage were highlighted in presentations such as Wetu, you too! and A Start to the New Season: A Native Ceremony. A new collaboration with the Greater Boston Knitting Guild and author Jackie Fee resulted in the development of a 17th-century pattern book and test pieces knitted from seven specially-developed Plimoth Worsteds produced by Harrisville Designs. We are grateful to a number of volunteers from the Greater Boston Knitting Guild who volunteered monthly to demonstrate their work in the Hornblower Visitor Center. These sessions were popular with Museum guests. The Museum expanded its ability to reach audiences onsite, online and on the road. In an effort to become a national resource on King Philip’s War, the Museum filmed a twenty-minute screen adaptation of the conflict resolution drama So Dreadful a Judgment. Based on court records and Benjamin Church’s war memoir, the film will be shown regularly at Plimoth 2

Plantation, and will live online with accompanying materials for teachers and homeschoolers. The Plimoth Players returned for their third Shakespeare season and their production of The Taming of the Shrew was also performed on tour at the Cape Playhouse, America’s oldest summer theater. The Education Department performed workshops of a new theatrical, multimedia piece on Wampanoag and Pilgrim history designed for secondary school audiences, and expanded Early Education services with 25 Head Start performances. Weeklong summer camps served children between the ages of eight and twelve. A Kid’s Life in Wampanoag Country and the Maritime Adventure camps sold out. Three new blogs – They Knew They Were Pilgrims, The Riven Word and Pilgrim Seasonings – were added to the Museum’s website and proved popular with informal learners and scholars alike. Plimoth Plantation enters the American imagination every Thanksgiving season, but October and November 2012 were particularly memorable. Holiday media activity remained strong with coverage on Voice of America, the New York Times, New England Cable News, ABC’s The Chew, the Wall Street Journal, Chronicle and the Cooking Channel. The autumn enriched some longstanding partnerships and created new relationships. Filmmakers began documenting the process of making a mishoon (Native boat) that Plimoth Plantation’s Wampanoag Indigenous Program (WIP) will present to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). The mishoon will represent Eastern Woodland maritime life in the NMAI collection. The first stage of the project identified and felled the tree destined to become the boat. Under the supervision of WIP Associate Director Darius Coombs, all work was performed in traditional dress, providing historically accurate footage for the film that will accompany the mishoon to Washington, DC. The project extends into 2013 – the 40th Anniversary of WIP. We were delighted to be a part of Thanksgiving in our Nation’s capital. The U.S. State Department asked Plimoth Plantation to provide educational programming at Blair House during A Taste of Thanksgiving, an invitationonly event where leading diplomats and their families learned about the holiday and its history. The State Department’s sumptuous Thanksgiving feast was prepared by Oprah Winfrey’s renowned chef, Art Smith. During dinner, Plimoth Plantation’s Colonial and Native costumed staff delighted the foreign dignitaries. (Art Smith was so captivated by Museum staff that he agreed to appear on CBS Radio with Plimoth Plantation staff on Thanksgiving Day.) For the second year in a row, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH) asked Plimoth Plantation to provide role playing performances and food history talks as part of their Thanksgiving programming. Twitter interest in the Smithsonian NMAH performances was so high that the Museum’s Colonial food blog, Pilgrim Seasonings, almost doubled its followers in one day. Plimoth staff also lectured and performed at Washington DC’s Cosmos Club – one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious arts and culture organizations. For the third consecutive November, the Museum partnered with Scholastic to offer schools across the country an electronic field trip to Plimoth Plantation. A new short film on Mayflower II also debuted on the Scholastic website. Since 2009 these online educational programs have reached an estimated 20,000,000 students. cont. on next page 3

Usually quiet after the Thanksgiving, the Hornblower Visitor Center was bustling in December with a fine crafts sale showcasing the work of Plimoth Plantation Knitters’ Club members, as well as some of the Museums’ artisans and friends. Museum staff and volunteers piloted this delightful new holiday program which was popular with all who attended; plans are underway to expand it in the future. Mayflower II was readied for moving and safely towed to Fairhaven for her long winter of repairs in dry dock. The work is part of a seven year plan for the fifty-five-year-old ship’s restoration so she’ll be looking her best for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival in 2020. On 12-12-12 Plimoth Plantation entered into a lease of the grist mill on Plymouth’s Town Brook. A reproduction of the 1636 mill that once stood at the same location, the newly named Plimoth Grist Mill is perfectly aligned with the Museum’s educational mission. The historic site and working mill provide a beautiful and stimulating environment for further exploration of Plymouth’s Native and English history while adding an exciting new dimension to the Museum’s traditional crafts and trades exhibits. With this unique building and setting, the Museum has great opportunities to present science, technology and environmental exhibits. Starting in 2013, the fresh stone-ground organic cornmeal will be available for sale at the Mill and in the Museum’s other gift shops. Daylong historical immersion intensives with Calvin College and Connecticut College were student favorites this year. In 2012, the Museum instituted the Spring Conference, a new annual symposium for staff, board and members. Spring Conference enhances staff content mastery by sharing institutional research as workshops, talks and panel discussions, and invites scholars to share their academic work so that current university research reaches general audiences through the Museum’s programs. Plimoth Plantation is taking a leadership role in revitalizing academic and general interest in the complex story of 17th-century Anglo-European and Native cultures and life ways through internships, college programming and the exploration of formal university affiliations. Achieving the Museum’s vision requires constant investment in a Plimoth Plantation learning environment that advances research and encourages programmatic excellence and experimentation. One of America’s most cherished history museums, Plimoth Plantation has provided millions of guests the chance to connect with the people, places and historic events that tell the pivotal story of our Nation’s earliest foundation. Time, however does not stand still. As we turn the page on another year, we look toward an exciting future in which the Museum will continually strive to become an even more relevant, more engaging and compelling 21st-century living museum.

On July 21st, 2012 Plimoth Plantation hosted A Celestial Celebration, a summer gala to benefit the Museum’s signature ship, Mayflower II, in DCR Pilgrim Memorial State Park on the Plymouth waterfront. This memorable affair was sold out, and included a cocktail reception featuring a raw bar provided by Island Creek, as well as a dinner menu created by celebrity chef Joanne Chang. Guests enjoyed music, a live auction, a brief program highlighting the iconic ship’s heritage and history as well as other special entertainment provided by TEN 31 Productions. The waterfront park setting was transformed for the occasion with illuminated tents and stunning decor enhanced by Mayflower II docked in the background. Honorary gala chairs Gail Huff Brown, broadcast journalist and wife of Sen. Scott Brown, and Dr. Phil Budden, British Consulate-General to New England, were joined by award-winning keynote speaker Nathaniel Philbrick. Jonathan Soroff, social columnist for The Improper Bostonian, delighted the guests as master of ceremonies. The event raised over $150,000 towards the restoration of Mayflower II. 9

Plimoth Plantation’s summer internship program offered internships to over twenty interns in 2012. Interns worked on special projects in many departments from Historic Textiles to Museum Education and Research. Volunteers arrive at the 2012 Annual Museum Clean Up Day. This highly anticipated event has been part of Plimoth Plantation’s calendar for over fifteen years.

in memoriam

For their selfless service and unique contributions over the years, we recognize with heartfelt gratitude each of these longtime friends of Plimoth Plantation.

Frances Burnham (1941-2012),

an Overseer of Plimoth Plantation for 25 years, was passionate about the Museum’s mission and programs. A devout history lover, Fran could often be seen at Plimoth Plantation’s lectures, special events, workshops and living history exhibits. For Fran, who often had English visitors, the highlight of their visit, in her view, was a trip to Plimoth Plantation. Just a few weeks before her death, her last outing was to bring an English friend on the tour! She had a particular fondness for the Museum’s horticulture programs and gardens. Many organizations were the beneficiaries of her knowledge and interest in early New England history, including the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, The New England Farm and Garden Association, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, the National Society of Colonial Dames of Massachusetts and many more. Her hobbies also included breeding and raising Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Fran graduated from Northeastern University and received a Masters from Antioch University; she also graduated from the Radcliffe Publishing Program. She served with her husband of 49 years in the US Peace Corps in Ethiopia, and was Education Director at the Boston Respiratory Disease Association for several years. While serving on Plimoth’s Board, Fran was also a member of the Membership, Annual Fund, Strategic Planning, and the Hornblower Award Committees. In 2000, she arranged and led a delegation from Plimoth Plantation and the Town of Plymouth to England as part of the planning for 2020. She was appointed the representative to the Southwark Council, which includes Rotherhithe, where the Mayflower was berthed. With British Consul Phil Budden and the late Rev. Dr. Peter Gomes, she actively initiated the planning for 2020. Fran was an early advocate for including the Wampanoag Homesite as a permanent feature of the museum’s visitor experience. The New England Farm & Garden Association has awarded a summer internship at Plimoth Plantation in her memory.

Jack Conway (1924-2012),

served as a Museum Overseer, and was the founder and Chairman of Jack Conway & Company. In addition to being the former President of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and Vice-President of the National Association of Realtors, Jack was named State Realtor of the Year in 1971. He served as President of the Plymouth County Development Council, the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, the Scituate Chamber of Commerce and the Brockton Metro Chamber. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Jack served during World War II, and was a candidate for U.S. Congress in 1982. With his extensive civic involvement and pride in the South Shore region, Jack was an important connector for the Museum to the local business community.

“In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it’s wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.” -Elizabeth Gilbert

Wigmore Alling Pierson

(1940-2012), “Wig”, as he liked to be called by family and friends, was a descendant of Pilgrim William Brewster and a proud member and past governor of the Massachusetts Mayflower Society. A history lover, he also served on the Cohasset Historical Commission and, as Chairman of the committee, produced the third volume of the Narrative History of Cohasset. Enthusiastic and engaging, Wig was best known locally as the host of cable talk-show Pierson to Person, which was broadcast live from Scituate every Thursday for ten years. As an active Overseer of Plimoth Plantation, Wig was committed to bringing Mayflower descendants to Plimoth Plantation to enjoy the Museum’s exhibits and programs.

Paul Morgan (1923-2012),

was an important member of Plimoth Plantation’s extended family. Along with his wife Anne (Nancy), an Honorary Trustee, Paul was a source of excellent advice and a thoughtful advocate for the Museum. He was especially fond of Mayflower II, and was a member of the Duxbury Yacht Club. He spent a considerable amount of time working with non-profit organizations, often behind-thescenes. He served as a director to the HocheScofield Foundation in Worcester, Trustee and Honorary Trustee of the Higgins Armory Museum, Trustee and Chairman of Friendly House, Trustee of the Pilgrim Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Trustee and former Chairman of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Trustee and Honorary Trustee of the American Farm School in Thessalonika, Greece. In his professional career, Paul was the CEO and Chairman of the Morgan Construction Company in Worcester, Massachusetts.
