THINKING OUT LOUD
FOREWORD
“Thinking Out Loud is a collection of thoughts and conversations about paper between the six members of this group. This uncut uncensored collection is chronologically displayed throughout this book to narrate the steps of research, analysis and development these six members went through during this month-anda-half journey. By using the social networking tool, Facebook, the group created a private, multi-user conversation where all members shared their thoughts, progress and regrets, and, after battling against time to find a strong concept which could be manifested as a single piece about paper, the inception and validation of this book marks the end of this conversation.

Joe Mania although louis doesnt have an facebook account, i thought it might be helpful to have a little FB chat. maybe we can use this chat to discuss “private stuff” and just use the blog as a reference for inspiration...? and own work of course. BLOG IS ONLINE. http://handcraftblog.blogspot.com/ email: handcraftblog@gmail.com PW: ilovehandcraft going to customize it later. keep on uploading LETS DO THIS
Philip Linnemann Great! So now we are up and running! Just posted an idea for Thursday. Let’s start sharing, wuhu.

Joe Mania we might want to think about a logo aswell... Veronica Law Hey hey! I had a few ideas of what we could do... theres just so many possibilities! I’ve already contact 10 companies and places on workshops, but I have a feeling that they probably won’t allow us to attend for this thursday since it’s such late notice! Here’s a few websites i’ve visited and contacted too for a one day workshop. Some are a bit expensive... but probably worth it. If we can’t find a place, there are the things we could possibly do... - Make soap! we can recreate soap from scratch... design and reform or make a mould for it to any shape we like. we can do this at home or try and contact this workshop http://www.genesissoap.co.uk/Bar-Soap-Making-Workshop(1860221).htm - Use the Chelsea workshop - known to be the biggest metal and wood workshop in london... why don’t we take advantage of that? - Learn from street crafts- people you see on the street making photo frames from wires etc... we can appreciate them. - visit galleries and place involving crafts- nice to see what other people do... - Make our own wax candles - Book Binding also another website i stumbled across http://ukhandmade.co.uk/ all the best, Ronnie x

THINKING OUT LOUD
Philip Linnemann Yeah we have a lot of things to discuss on Thursday, but first of all we need to determine what sort of publication we want to do for this project and the ethos behind. Here are some different things to think about until we meet: Which approach are we going to take on this? What do we want to tell with our publication? Do we want to go into a specific craft or give a broader picture of handcraft? Do we want to encourage people to learn handcraft skills or do we just want to inform people? How do we want to publish this project: which medium/media are we going to use? In other words: it is vital to reach an agreement on what our goal with this project is and how we are gonna present it. When we know that, then we can start developing visual identity such as logo ect. As Kieron wrote to us yesterday we are going to work on this project for 5-6 weeks. The faster we find out what we want to achieve and how, the more time we have to create an awesome piece of work! So be prepared for Thursday guys :D Veronica Law winsor things sounds nice too!! since we’ll be working on this for quite a while.. visiting many workshops would be great..i’ll show you guys a few on wednesday? =) Philip Linnemann That sounds great veronica! I’m totally up for visiting a few different places too and never the less, that gives us opportunities for great documentations.

Speak tomorrow then! Veronica Law Hi guys! i got a call from a lady from a silver work studio. And basically she is willing to have 6 of us come to her studio for the day and we can make silver jewellery, pendant, ring and also glass beads as she shares a studio with a guy that makes glass beads! how cool is that?.... However, she can only do this friday 10-4pm... we’d have to miss the lecture to go to this... they can also pick us up hahaha from Petersfield ... so costs! The original cost for the day would be £120... but i negotiated and said we were students etc... and there would definately be 6 of us.... down to £85 is that ok with everyone? bearing in mind it is silver we’re making. i can try and negotiate even more down to like £70 or £80... but i don’t know how low i can negotiate. i have to get back to her before tomorrow afternoon though so please get back to me =) Joe Mania OH HO HO THANKS FOR THAT. missing the lecture shouldnt be a problem at all. 15 pound each isnt too much aswell. sounds good to me... but, i always work at a proper jeweller back at home.
9
THINKING OUT LOUD
http://www.patrikmuff.com/index.php?Startseite so, no need for me to create any type of jewellery. =) but i could some filming while u guys work on some silver stuff??? do you have a homepage of them? the only thing i have in mind at the moment is, that i personally think that glass beads always look super cheap and cheesy. maybe we should discuss first which way we`re going, and then see where we spend money on. not that we already spend too much money at the very first days, and then dont have the money when we actually ned it? what does the rest of the group think? HAOBO? SAM? LOUIS? (has an facebook account since today... YIHAAAA) WHERE ARE YOU? Patrik Muff - Startseite www.patrikmuff.com Joe Mania at 21:05 OH, its 85pound each. i thought 85 for all of us. thats too much for me then. sorry.

Veronica Law okies kool.. i think its too much money anyways, cos what she means is per person! yikes.. well i’ll e-mail her tomorrow saying that we can’t afford it lol okies dokie... we’ll discuss tomorrow where we’re heading =) oh kool mania makes jewellery.... Interesting! seems like sam and Bo doesn’t go on facebook much unlike us... haha to be honest.. i e-mailed so many people that i can’t remember what website they had lol! but never mind! its way too expensive.. haha Joe Mania where and when do we meet tomorrow? if we meet somewhere. or was it planned as a FB meeting? Veronica Law Sam’s got Library at 10-11am I’ve got Library thing at 11-12pm you guys finish at what time? Philip Linnemann Hey guys, Seems like we’re in from 10.30 - 1.00, so unless u guys wanna wait (which would be cool) I guess we’re just gonna see each other on Thursday. If nobody have a realistic suggestion I think it would be really cool to go to Harrow to the Winsor & Newton. At least we could always just do the museum and that would be cool. Let me hear your thoughts. P

THINKING OUT LOUD
20TH OF FEBRUARY
Joe Mania at 03:56 whats the plan for monday? Veronica Law at 11:23 I think we should probably bring in the free gift... To show what we got out of the day... And our future plans... E.g. Trying out as much as we can ... We are not certain about the final outcome yet.. But if we were to do a magazine I’m totally kool with that... Plus a documentary. We could tell them the possible places we’re gonna visit and who we have contacted... I’ve got a few mnore places so I’ll post them up after work today... Later on in the evening. I can do a few food crafts as well next week with vegs and fruits. Etc my mate knows a place that makes boats as well... So yea keep me posted guys! Xx Joe... 3.56? O_o... Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 12:16 Hey dudes and dudesses, I talked to Keiron about our thing during my assessment and got a bit of feedback. You want to meet up at like 11.45 on Monday to give us an hours to figure out what we’re going to do? I got a few ideas... Philip Linnemann at 12:56 Hey folks, I really hope you have all read my post on the blog from Thursday. Since I didn’t have much work to talk about at my assessment I spent it talking about this project.
20TH OF FEBRUARY
16
As you probably know Kieron emphasis a lot on the PROCESS (sorry there are no text hierarchy app, so I write bold/underlined in UPPERCASE). This means he isn’t necessarily interested in what places we want to visit or how we want to publish it; he is first of all interested in our ETHOS for this project. WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT AND WHICH VALUES DO WE WANT TO COMMUNICATE. Saying we want to make a publication project about handcraft is not enough. We have to have a deeper meaning; a CONCEPT. Think of it as the prologue in a book, where the author writes WHY he is writing this book and what he wants people to understand, what message he is trying to get across the pages. Finding that overall concept is what makes a GREAT and UNIFORMLY project. And from there we can begin researching and developing the IDEAS. So I say that everyone think about 5-6 different directions we can take to this project for tomorrow. I don’t know when we are supposed to talk to Kieron, but I think that we have to meet up at least one hour before! Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 16:12 yeah thats what i was saying... lets meet up at like 11.30ish since our thing is at 12.45. And same with me with Kieron... we talked about process. See you tomorow! Veronica Law at 19:47 yea we did discuss that ... i think we were just too caught up in visiting a lot of places. but yea.. i have a few ideas too... see you all tomorrow =)

THINKING OUT LOUD

Haobo Chen at 22:52 I think Joe want to meet up after the class,Veroni told me, but before or after the class are all fine for me. Philip Linnemann at 23:05 I’m sorry, but I can’t do after 3.30 unfortunately. Maybe some of us could meet up before discussing some stuff and beginning the visuals for the presentation and then those who wants to meet up afterwards instead can finish that?

THINKING OUT LOUD
Veronica Law at 20:02 we decided that we show everything in the blog.. and talk to people about our ideas.. sam wasn’t too keen on PDF.. cos we technically haven’t got much to show.. in terms of new information.. since everyone sort of knows about what sort of crafts are already out there... but each of us will upload something onto the blog. Philip Linnemann at 20:03 Good idea! See you tmo then Philip Linnemann at 20:05 Btw - Maybe someone should delete the ‘Simon’ picture :-) Veronica Law at 20:07 lol!!!!!!! hahaha... i think we shudd keep it on haha.. nah kidding .... me and joe wanted to get bubble hats like kieron and all of us wear it.. i should knit 6! =O that will take a very long time tho.. and i would have to learn how to knit..

Philip Linnemann at 10:45 Hey guys, Sorry, again, for my absent in this thread. Unfortunately I have a long essay to hand in (online) today about my exchange for my elective. I’ll be working on it the whole day, so I might have trouble coming in today. Sorry... Papermaking sounds cool though! Maybe we could make our own bookcovers with embossed titles. Have you seen the papertrays you can get in most cafÊs for your take away coffees? They look quite easy to blend and reshape. It would be cool if everyone could think of an essential concept our book. We are only missing the very last piece now. I will meet up with ideas tomorrow. Hope you make it without me ;) Phil Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 14:11 hey dudes, im going to be late, but start making stuff without me...

based on ‘paper’. In order to maintain the notion of craft within the publication, pop up and interactive pages/sections are integrated therefore creating an experience for the reader. If we DON’T see him... we can give the excuse of a group field trip to a paper mill/ factory. Which means we would definitely have to go to one if we say this... i am currently in the situation of looking for one that we can have access to. any other ideas lads? x Veronica Law 06 March at 19:13 hey guys! i think we should definately visit this place anyways or whenever we get the chance since its in north east london check it out http://www.thepapertrail.org.uk/default.asp?V_DOC_ID=840 Joe Mania 06 March at 19:28 lets go and see kieron. just showing him the footage of how we made paper. if he tries to make us change the idea we just tell him that we want to go for it and DONT want him to makes us change the concept AGAIN. see you tomorrow. 12TH OF MARCH
Philip Linnemann at 14:38 Hey folks, Thanks for a great day on Thursday. We got a good step further and determined some essential stuff. As you know we don’t have much time left - WE PRINT THIS THURSDAY - so here’s some stuff to do for Monday. Please be prepared@Louis & Haubo: It was great to see all the work you have done for the fold out book! Awesome guys! Now, we need to push this as far as possible. Think about how you can refine all these fold outs. E.g. the blender - are there ways to apply some nice details to make it look as real as possible apart from printing on it. Maybe buttons / wire / nice detail edges/ a material page / whatever you can think of. Try out as much as you can. We may want to apply some small simple illustrations along with the text to make the graphics look as much consistent as possible to the two other booklets. Think about what this could be. We will hopefully finish the 3rd booklet for Monday and pay full attention to your book from then, but please have as much planned out as possible so we have good time for refinements. @Sam: Thanks a lot for all the research. We still need a brilliant idea for how we want to showcase this collection and I think your the perfect guy to figure this out! Brainstorm as much as you can and present on Monday please. We have 3 completely different booklets in content and form so think about how we can present this for the reader so that he/she gets a unified experience out of it. It is a really hard task and probably the most impor-
33

tant so please push ideas as much as possible. You may also want to think about a subtitle to our name/headline which can increase the links between the 3 booklets and make the concept even stronger. We have chosen to make 3 different booklets to showcase the possibilities with paper, how do we communicate that to the audience. You might want to think about other things than a box as well. @Ronnie: I don’t quite know where you are standing in the different projects, but please fill in where you find it necessary and help as much as possible! Let me know if this confuses you. @Joe: I’ll email you tonight. I will try and think about as much as possible for all 3 booklets and hopefully finish the layout of the infographics myself. Looking forward to seeing you all Monday with great ideas and further process. Let me know if you need help with anything! Philip Philip Linnemann at 20:09 btw please confirm you’ve seen this :) Have a good one everyone! Veronica Law at 21:12 i have seen this lol i was working today and just got back... and working tomorrow as well... i start on the illustrations for the pop up book and well.. yea i agree we need to refine the blender page.. a bit more.. but then again.. we don’t want to complicate it. we’ll see what we can do. i drew up all the nets already... and also.. we need to prepare for presentation on monday since our last presentation wasn’t that prepared... and i

I’ll send some drawings for the design of the box and try and do some good looking stuff for the presentation. I know this sounds bad and I’m really sorry, but I won’t be here on Monday. I’m filming a project I’ve been working on for ages and I had to get the camera and stuff for three consecutive days... I did it Sat, Sun and Mon thinking he presentation was Friday! But I’m sending you my share of the work and I’ll see you when-ever we next meet up. Keep me posted, S.

Philip Linnemann at 13:57 I agree veronica. Maybe you can have a look on the presentation instead? I think we should start with presenting our concept development from beginning to now. Can you try to organise this as well? I’ll be home working after work from around 8ish. We can skype about if you want to. Ok Sam. I know I might have just mentioned this, but I just wanted to clarify that the most important task for you is to think about how we communicate to the audience why we have chosen to make these 3 booklets and why they all differ from each other in form and content. We may want to print a description on the inside / back of the bookcase, use descriptive subtitles on each cover ect. or something third. We don’t want Kieron to go like: “Yeah it looks nice, but why have you made 3 different things instead of just one? It doesn’t make sense.” To rebuttal this question is the most important. Too bad with tomorrow, but please send some worked through material. I think it’s only fair to expect the same effort from everyone. Talk to you later this evening guys! Veronica Law at 19:57 Hi guys! Yea I’ll be home around the same time... So I’ll skype u then... Not quite sure what u mean.. But yea I can start on the presentation.. Speak later Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 12:37 Hey, I’m at the internet cafe... did you get the file? Otherwise here it all is.... Congratulations. You have just purchased your very own paperspective. In this book, we will go over everything you need to know to open our very own paper factory! The first thing you will need to do, is go over the brief history of paper that is presented in this ever folding book: Paper history. Now that we know more about the theory of paper, we can move on to the practise: Making paper. During this second step, you can skim through this pop-up book and follow the different steps of paper fabrication to make your own. Now that we know both where paper comes from, and how to make it, we can move on to a more commercial aspect: paper nation. This unfolding poster/book is a source of valuable information about the international standards in paper weight, size, import/export and many others fascinating data.

It might be good to just spend 45 min on collecting our respective works. Hope you had a nice weekend! I cut myself again. Still a long way to become a master chef I guess :) Joe Mania at 18:00 sorry again for not turning up today. hope phil explained to you. Instead of doing the world map id just finished the logos for the top ten paper companies (illustrator files to be found in dropbox>booklets>3. book) thought it looks nice to have their logo on the page. ill have a look what else i can do. Veronica Law at 19:26 no worries joe! sorry i couldnt text you back.. we were busy in a midst of doing stuff and discussions and finding out different types of paper. periment with. As promised I just wanted to summarise peoples task for today and tomorrow before we can start PRINTING! Louis and Haubo: Finds out which paper is most efficient for the fold out book by experimenting. We need a paper with an authentic feel to it. The blender needs work as well. Veronica: Collects text and image for fold out book and minimalises the nets as much as possible. We want a simple, clean - almost abstract - feel to it to make it look as sophisticated as possible :) I’ve got some ideas for it if you wanna skype later. Could you also take some pics of the grey/cardboard samples in natural light and upload on DB asap please? Sam: We need three pages that link the 3 booklets together to one collection (and basically explains our “narrative”): 1st “link page” goes onto the back of the front cover of the box. Gives an introduction to the concept and to the first booklet the reader is going to look at; the timeline. Speak to me about the layout for it. 2nd “link page” goes onto the last page of the timeline and is meant to link to the second booklet; the fold out. Speak to Joe about the layout. 3rd “link page” goes onto the last page of the fold out book. Apart from linking/introducing to the third booklet this page should also contain some examples of how you can use paper, eg: Printing paper, posters, books, paintings, cleaning, folding, boxes (storing), packaging, paper engeneering, animation ect. Speak to Ronnie about layout.

Joe and I: Finalise the poster and meets up tomorrow. Hopefully all InDesign files can be ready for printing tomorrow. We will the collect them and put the final touch on making sure that colors, fonts, compositions etc are used in the same way throughout all three books. I hope you sort of agree on this. Otherwise let me/us know here. WEDNESDAY: We have hopefully finalised all designs by Tuesday night and are ready to print! Everyone meet in the morning to buy the paper we need and get things printed. Things could get a little pricey so please bring 50 pounds each in cash. I know it’s a lot of money and we might not spend them all, but we don’t want some people paying for others leaving hanging loans. From that point we need to: Make the fold outs Bind the books Construct the box/case AND THEN WE SHOULD BE DONE!!! Joe Mania at 20:11 oh actually.... we should redo everything... haha Veronica Law at 20:17 hi! i won’t be able to skype tonight. i work better when i’m at home. But i can definitely pop in later on tomorrow if you want me to.

bo and louis went to the school shop to buy some paper to test on which we thought we close to the authentic paper we recieved. Kieron told us to basically simplify the whole thing and it just seemed like he wanted us to change the project but he didn’t want us to be unhappy with it. However, there are a few disagreements with the type of paper being used. So Bo is going to experiment with the papers to see if it will look good. as we don’t want it to look clumsy and childlike with the textured paper as i don’t think it’ll look as professional. But not to worry, I will skype tomorrow or something. Phil- take a photo of the grey samples? i think Bo has them now. ronnie Philip Linnemann 21 March at 20:41 It would be great to see you later on tomorrow ronnie at joe’s place. I think we need to sit down, once we’ve finished the layouts, with each booklet on a seperate computer screen and make it coherent. What’s this new thing with disagreements? Why would the textured paper look unprofessionally? It sort of works the exact other way around and that was one of Ray’s main points in his critism. I’m a bit confused since I thought we agreed on this earlier. Anyway, let us know about the experiments you are doing and keep this in mind. Alrighty with the grey samples Veronica Law at 21:15 okies, i’ll pop by tomorrow at joe’s place ... i’ll explain tomorrow why there are disagreements.

Haobo Chen at 21:42 ok, so you guys going to meet up tomorrow in joe’s place. I think we don’t need to meet you up to show the testing page then? But just incase you guys want to see it tomorrow, I will finish them tonight, and maybe Veroni, if you can get off at stratford on your way to Joe’s house to pick up the examples, and bring over to these 2 boys and explain to them will be good. Veronica Law at 21:43 Yeah okies. Haobo Chen at 21:46 No, dont want to talk to you guys any more after all these remake things…! so just let me know when you will arrive stratford 20mins before. Therefore using the same paper family but different weights throughout the collection as the pop up book required heavier paper weight etc. But firstly i’m going to ask the paper company if they have varied weights. might be worth having a look at. but if we change the paper, we have to think about how it would affect the other books, of course. what u think? Haobo Chen at 08:52 Veroni tested me yesterday and we will be in brixton station at 10:30. Joe Mania at 10:40 I did The Final Text for The Link pages Based on what sam Wrote Someone Wanst good at Multitasking (Wirkung and listening) yesterday... Joe Mania at 10:47 we also need to remember buying the double sided glue etc. Philip Linnemann at 10:56 Woops I meant you, lol. Thanks for uploads! By the way mate. If you don’t know what to do now i’ve uploaded the poster in db. You could try figuring out how the second page in recycling can fit into the grid of the others. That would be awesome Philip Linnemann at 10:57 btw the back of the poster is not gonna be the image in the file (don’t you worry). I just use it as a template for now :) Haobo Chen at 19:56 Ok, update of the printing thing guys. As we all know we are not able to use any paper that we all argee with to print on, and after a whole day running in the city, we finally find the best mach paper that we could use: 1. For the Pop-up book’s base page, we are going to use 225gsm Summerset paper Size A0, the reason use this big size is because we try to make the French fold of the pages look nicer, so will lay them in one big sheet and fold after. 2. For the nets of the Pop-up book, is going to be 190gsm Bukingford paper Size

A3 and 225gsm summerset paper Size A4 (this is for the base of the blender) 3.For the timeline, we are going to use the 190gsm Bukingford paper Size A3, too. plan for tonight and tomorrow: I and Veroni will layout everything tonight and make sure they are ready to print, and sent to the printer by email. Tomorrow, me, Veroni and Louis will go to the printer at 12 to see if all the layout is ok and make sure the print shop get our ideas. For the A2 poster, we will bring the design and the layout to the print shop tomorrow, try to find the best match paper to print on. Things still missing: the cover design of the book, do we have the design of the cover yet? Can we get it done tonight and we can bring to print tomorrow as well? if everything goes well tomorrow, we will be able to get all the print done by Friday. Veronica Law at 20:11 Hello boys, So just a recap of what happened today. I met up with Louis and Bo at brixton, discussed what we wanted in terms of paper. So when we got there we asked for samples 190 and 300gsm for Bockingford paper. Then went to Orange to ask for test prints but they wouldn’t print on special paper which we provide. it has to be what they provide from thier supplier. (especially on large formats) so the printer told us a whole load of stuff and what they could only provide us:

Bockingfold 190gsm coated summerset 225gsm and 320gsm (i think) in A sizes. -this paper is pretty soft its of of the ones we liked before ... however.. it’s pretty thick so we decided to use it for the base pages in the pop up book. (225gsm) Then we went to Hobs to see if they could print on our paper. tried. didn’t work... ink came off very easily..since it was uncoated.. looked pretty nice though but it was a big no no...and didn’t even print properly.. We went back to Orange and he agreed to help us get Bockingford paper and summerset ordered. BUT now we have to supply PDFs by tonight and send them an e-mail ... so all work needs to be done tonight and completed. Otherwise he won’t order the special papers we want. Me, Bo and Louis will go again tomorrow at 12noon so nothing will go wrong and we can examine how it will be printed and see if he will understand our PDFs etc. there are quite alot of Print settings that needs to be done for the pop up book so we save costs etc.. (i’ll do that tonight) and use A0 size ... they said they will fold the base pages for us too. (if anyone has any problems with the illustrations etc.. please either tell me or change it watever) So please skype or text, phone, e-mail etc... and ermm.. yea.. need all the work done on PDFs. so i can send to him.. and by tomorrow morning.. we can put the poster on USB or something and choose the paper.. and ask for recomendations. ronnie

and getting lots of things together. 1. i am fine with whatever paper you agreed on. the only thing that came on my mind when i did some test prints at home is that the paper has to be thick enough (if we print front and back) so you cant see the one print shinig through on the other side of the paper. 2. the covers are already on dropbox. at least the ones i did yesterday. find them under: dropbox >joe&phil>publication>booklets>covers 3. i redesigned the hole timeline again the whole day, as it was slightly bigger than A5. and that caused major problems today. i changed the proportions now. will send over the pdf tonight (explaining as good as i can, how to print it). i will upload the illustrator files aswell. but it is a bit complicated if you want to change stuff, cause these are quite a few files, but its clearly organised. 4. @ philip: i can figure out how the second page of recycling could fit the other pages, as you said earlier. Sounds like a plan?

Haobo Chen at 22:43 guys, one problem of the pop-up, I just spoke to veroni about it: the frames in the pop-up, I knew you are now not apply any colour to them, it’s going be fine with the page3 ( the pop-up frame and all right with the page4 (the one with the hand), but for the page5 (the one of taking the paper of the frame), as philip you told us you don’t want to see any mark on the nets, and also the paper we are going to base page and the nets will have very similar colour, that will bring the problem which is if we just stick the frame down onto the base page, it’s gonna be really difficult to see. but if you all really confident of it’s still gonna be seen as a frame on the page easily ,I am ok with it. Veronica Law at 22:43 guys.. or someone... i need the text whoever has it... for the last page of the pop up book on the base... i’m guessing we’re not having the “ here are some different ways on how we use paper” or is that referring to the info poster? also.. philip.. have u been finished off the materials page which i put in dropbox? it’ll be great if you could just tell me when u’ve done that ^^ Joe Mania at 22:45 pop up book: you guys decide. i would say.

I’ll get back to you then! Starting to see an end :D Joe Mania at 22:49 and we need also the double sided tape thing... Philip Linnemann at 22:50 @ Ronnie: Unfortunately I have Flama from my dads company with copywrites ect. so it’s only this computer which can open it (since it’s registered in the same company). Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 02:49 Good one Joe! Sent via Facebook Mobile Philip Linnemann at 10:03 Hey guys, You maybe want to kill me for posting this, maybe not. Nevertheless I just felt a need to trying to find an alternative to this google book. I just had a thought about what points are interesting in the matter of paper. I looked through our lovely blog to find some of the ideas we had in the beginning of this project before we fell completely in love with infographics and pop ups andthese points are actually quite interesting. In my opinion especially when we are talking about the future of paper. Take a look at this video Joe posted long ago from 11:04 and about 4-5 minutes forward http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djSWPET40Ro&feature=channel This article explains a bit about that irrational emotion that can be translated so well onto paper instead of a pixel screen. http://future.iftf.org/2005/06/the_future_of_p.html I think an essay written around this topic in an appetising way, maybe divided into small sections, could work much better and reflect the analysis that seems needed. It doesn’t have to be that long.. We would sort of touch on one of the main points in the concept we presented long ago: Craft.. A niche market, but finishing by saying that it will never be extinct because of this irrational emotion in people.

The introduction of interactive “new media art” into museums and galleries has brought about changes for the relationship between art audiences and artworks. The artist’s hand has relegated part of its creative freedom to the visitor’s hand. The tactiloclasmic tensions that reigned in the traditional art museum have been released, at least partly – many exhibitions now contain artworks that are meant to be touched. This does not apply to interactive computer art alone. Rather, interactive art is part of a wider phenomenon that has multiple determinants. Historically, it is an outcome of the efforts made by avant-garde movements such as Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Fluxus, E.A.T., Conceptualism etc. to question the traditional art object, and to “bridge art and life.”10 Interactive art draws inspiration from multiple sources – work, entertainment, communication, design, education, engineering and science – transforming and synthesizing these into new aesthetic experiences. Its debt to the traditions of “fine art” certainly exists, yet references to this art are often less evident and merged with other influences. Therefore it is understandable that interactive art has not always been wholeheartedly embraced by critics who have a more traditional notion of art and the values it embodies. In spite of the postmodern questioning of boundaries between “high” and “low” culture, interactive art is often treated as an alien; an intruder that can, at best, be tolerated. Before opening the gates to“anything tactile,” it is necessary to ask some basic questions. What is essential in the art experience? Silent contemplation? Forms and colors? Themes and stories? “Touch of eternity?“Sensational attractions? Visiting a “place” with family or friends? Or, perhaps, the discovery of something new and unprecedented through interaction and touching? http://www.cpara.co.uk/events/repeatrepeat/labour/Bristow.html see below Crucial to the idea of the material object as a non- discursive language is the sup-

pressed modality of touch, a sense that is implicit in Textiles. Similar to material culture and the landscape of the everyday in which it operates, it is the immediacy of touch that makes it paradoxically a potent vehicle of expression but in its resistance to representation and ‘polymorphous diversity’ impossible to pin down and unnamenable to discourse Centre for Practice as Research in the Arts www.cpara.co.uk Centre for Practice as Research in the Arts Share Philip Linnemann at 13:45 No worries Sam I share your frustrations. Let’s just work the best we can to make something which shows that we’ve learnt from this and have the holiday as motivation! So once again I am just gonna stir things up a bit. Louis came with another idea for what we can do so I am just gonna put these two things up and let everyone vote. The main idea with this 2nd edition book we are doing now is to show that we’ve learnt from this project. That we know what a narrative is, why it is needed and the fact that you shouldn’t be too keen on one visual idea. We can do this in two different ways: 1st. Is what we’ve been discussing so far which is to write an essay about whether or not paper is moving towards a niche market. About the fact that people are so involved in this tactile experience/value that it’s never going to less popular. So far it has survived the web tsunami and digital applications which came/comes with it such as the kindle.

2nd. Is what Louis just suggested, to each write a paragraph or so about our experiences and thoughts about the project we have just been through. 100-200 words each. print it on paper that we choose individually, bind it together and call the book “THINKING OUT LOUD”. Of course it is off our topic, but it will make the group project a lot easier. I suggest people come with their opinion and vote asap Philip Linnemann at 14:05 No worries Sam I think we all share your frustrations. We just need to get as much out of this as possible and to proof that we’ve understood what this is all about on Thursday. Let holiday be our motivation guys! I just spoke to Ronnie and Louis and Louis came up with another suggestion, so I am just gonna put these two possibilities up next to each other and let the majority decide: 1st. We base the publication upon the stuff we have been sharing this morning: To discuss whether our not paper are moving towards a niche market. People are emotional attached to paper objects such as books because of their tactile value. It has survived the web tsunami and all the digital applications which came/comes with it such as the kindle so far. Watch this video from 08:52 and onwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djSWPET40Ro&feature=channel 2nd. Is what Louis suggested, to write about our journey and the experiences that came with it. Of course this is off our original topic, but it would make it a lot easier to work as a group on this. I am up for both. Let me hear you guys Paper, Packaging, Energy, Waste, Recycling, Sustainability - conference speaker www.youtube.com Future trends in paper and packaging industry- entire 30 minute presentation. http://www.globalchange.com/ Paper and packaging industry. Future of sustainable packaging, paper, logistics. Demographics, digital impact, distribution and destiny. Demographics 1 billion new consumers. Emerging marke Share Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 14:12 Yeah man, I up for the second one. Lets do it seriously though. Veronica Law at 14:13 i think that the first one is quite philosophical but might be a bit boring. the second approach is rather funny i think, it has a humorous approach to it, but if we are doing the second one it would be entertaining. and olivia’s group has a slight similar approach but not really. as in their first sentence to their introduction is “step one: do not make a publication based on world record.” haha but it depends how we write it. lol so yea.. me and sam think the second idea is possible. Haobo Chen at 14:27 I think both of these 2 ideas are got some points, which I think we can bring them together. like what louis said, we’ve been spent 10 weeks working with paper, but just about these experience of working in this project, is not enough, as philip said, it’s totally off our idea of paper, but 6 people write an essay is too difficult, ( we not even meeting up together this afternoon, how can we bring ideas together?!)

so I think, as a group of 6 people who all love paper, also been tring to tell people how great paper is. we should all write our own experience from this project been work with papers. for example, I and louis been play around with paper and try to make them into a pop-up book, sam and Joe learned a lot of the history of the paper, philip know what the industry of paper, verioni know the printing ect. all these we could write about will relate to philip’s essay’s idea, which is the paper will never gone! of course if we have to choose between 2 ideas, I VOTE FOR THE ESSAY ONE. Haobo Chen at 14:32 Who would have thought that something as dull and mundane as paper could cause so much excitement, frustration, pleasure, anguish, enthusiasm, stress, and generally change a pick of professional students into a raving bunch of lunatics, for better or worse. The experience of working with paper has taught me so many broader things. Of course, there’s the history and the usage, but how about all the things that would be missing if there was no paper. There would be no paper work to do, no bills, no tax returns... on paper at least. Do I want to live in a world where I have to log on if I want to record my thoughts? No way. I have come to the conclusion that even though this project on paper has caused the most stress and mental anguish I have had in the last year and a half, I love paper. I love it. I couldn’t do without it. It is my life. Thank God for paper!!! from Louis For the second idea, this is what he would write for his experience of the project Philip Linnemann at 14:38 I agree with both of you. As long as we keep it witty, yet seriously I think we can actually make something quite nice that people would love to read. In the introduction we could say something like that the initial idea with this project was to

base a publication upon an interesting topic and as we spend this day talking about our mistakes we realised that this was actually much more interesting than paper. :) I wouldn’t mind making a mock up for an introduction and pass it on. It worked quite well last time don’t you think Sam? Haobo Chen at 14:46 dont think we need the intrduction, man. so work on NO.2? ARE WE CLEAR NOW?! Philip Linnemann at 14:53 Ok, thats fine with me I just think that we should have a quick discussion about what each of us writes so people doesn’t end up reading the same thing 6 times. I think yours is great Louis! Personally I think I am going to write a bit more about concept development and how a great visual idea can blindfold you in the process of finding the concept. Do you have an idea of how we can still collect an overall red line so that you feel you read 1 complete story in 6 bits? Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 14:56 Ok but for idea number two, we’ll need more. Like 2-5 pages minimum. Haobo Chen at 14:57 We shouldn’t try and edit everyone’s thoughts. We should all write our INDIVIDUAL thoughts. The publication shouldn’t the story in 6 parts. It should be 6 VERSIONS OF THE SAME STORY. Haobo is going to write about his experiences of making the bloody pop ups! Haobo Chen at 14:57 it’s from louis

Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 15:04 Yeah but not much is needed for the intro. Just concentrate on writing at least 2-3 pages each. It won’t take that long, just like say how you felt during the project. Haobo Chen at 15:08 I think 200 words can stretch 2 pages in an A5 book if it double spaced and slightly larger text. Shall we concentrate on writing approx. 200 words each? Then we know all the entries will be the same length. Louis Samuel Pavans De Ceccatty at 15:13 200 words? That last paragraph was longer than that man. Come on, let do between 500 and 700. Lets take it seriously. Haobo Chen at 15:22 In order for it to be a personal thought about the project, it needs to be digestible to the person who is reading it. What you are suggesting is one whole A4 page. That will make your intimate thoughts just a verbal assault on the reader. No-one will bother to finish reading it. I think that 200 words is the perfect amount for each of us. We can go 300 if you want, but 500+ is too much. Louis Philip Linnemann at 15:23 I agree with Sam. 500 - 700 can be done today easily Veronica Law at 15:23 yea lets do it! i’ll work on a 300word essay and stuff.. =) haha.. segregating it in chapters is good as well. erm we can use different tones of papers or watever.. or

Who would have thought that something as dull and mundane as paper could cause so much excitement, frustration, pleasure, anguish, enthusiasm, stress, and generally change a group of professional students into a raving bunch of lunatics, for better or worse. No way. Paper is freedom. So is a pen. Do I appreciate paper? Much more than I did. Paper is like gravity, it is weak, it is taken for granted, but it is essential, and we will always need it. I for one would be lost without it. Why am I typing this? Because my pen has run out of ink. If I had a pencil I would write this out in calligraphy just to hear to hard lead bleed onto the perfectly flat surface of a piece of crisp white paper. I want to wake up with a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils sitting on my bedside cabinet tomorrow morning. I will then write a novel and publish it. But don’t get me to make a pop-up book again. I think I would explode. To be perfectly honest, I never really valued pop-up books very much before this project, and I still don’t. They look nothing like the thing they’re supposed to represent. They make a book bulky and untidy. Nothing matches up, not even professional ones. I do now understand the process and the difficulty of making a pop-up book, but I still ask why do I need to? What is wrong with a flat image? People have been drawing flat images for millennia. It seems to me that pop-ups are still a bit of a gimmick, just like 3D film, which was a gimmick in the fifties and is still a gimmick today. I just wanted to express my anger at 3D film and the pop-up link gave me a good opportunity to impart my distain of that to you, dear reader. Over the last eight weeks, we have all lived and breathed paper. We see paper everywhere… flying on the wind, falling out of the sky, appearing like the devil in stained glass windows. It appears in my dreams and nightmares too. I think the single greatest moment of this project was coming with that concept. Paper. It
103
THINKING OUT LOUD
was a highlight. The opportunities were endless. Paper craft, paper use throughout history, types of paper, what paper is used for, in our daily lives, in other cultures, in other times… But by the final few weeks, the strain was beginning to slit our skin like a paper cut that tears through down to the bone. We became so passionate that we couldn’t see anything else. We couldn’t even be persuaded to deviate from our rigid plan. Three books. Three books at any measure. Paper blinded us. But we learned. Haobo Chen at 17:17 WRITING FROM HAOBO Dating paper Paper is one of the things that we use every day but we don’t really know much about it. Since we decided to make “paper” our topic, we spent the past eight weeks living and sleeping paper. There are so many things about paper, the history, the function and the techniques of making it … oh, my god, so many things we could talk about, we learned all this great knowledge about paper and want to share all of it with the public, but as we know the result now, we couldn’t do it, because we can’t do it right. But hey, it’s ok. At least we learned about it, although the project didn’t end up as we expected, but we now know a lot about paper, like starting out as strangers, and ending up close friends. When we started making the pop-up book, the paper treats us very harshly. You cut it into shape, stick it down, pull it, and it still lays on the base. Because it’s too soft to pop up. Once you use a thicker one, this time it pops, but you can’t fold it back again! And when you fold the paper again, especially the thick one, one of the layers of the paper will come off, and make your thirty minutes work become pointless! Just like a crying baby, it gets on your nerves, but you can’t hate it. After a week’s hard work, we finally find the right temperament of the paper, we find the
29TH OF MARCH

right thickness, and now, it behaves as a reliable friend, and it never let you down again. This is how I feel about paper: it’s really easy to work with in general; it has a lot of potential, you can pretty much build anything you want with it, but, you have to know the paper well. Paper is versatile, it can be hard, it can be soft, it can be thick, it can be thin, can be smooth as silk, as rough as basalt. After all the hard work, we finally finished all the designs, and got them printed. I was up working on the pop-up books until 3am Sunday morning. We were so proud of all the work that was done, we were on our way to planning out how we were going to finish the rest of copies, we felt the best in class. But it was too good to be true; the reality came crashing down. Nevertheless, nobody died in the crash, there were only a few bruises that will heal quickly. But hey again, that’s how life goes, and we are now paper masters, but just don’t ask us anything about it. Veronica Law at 19:07 Omg guys!! Seriously! O_o.. Some parts of the written text are good but some might be a bit too erm... Yea... We mighthave to rewrite some certain sections lol.. But great job guys! I think it’s better to not be so rational ... We don’t want to stand out as a bunch of cry babies feeling sorry for ourselves. We have to look at this completely opposite. We have to praise this project and point out what we have learnt from this. Ask yourself why we didn’t get it right. Don’t make your whole essay around paper, but about the process. Knowledge that you can bring to future projects ect. Does that makes sense? Hand made. So many things are mass produced today without the love and care of the individual craftsman. The person that takes due time and care to produce something exquisite. The original can copied and duplicated an infinite number of times with ease, but these duplicates lack the human touch. This is what attracted me to the idea of doing something hand made. The journey that we all went on during this process has been immense, informative, very rocky at times, but nonetheless worth it. Over the last eight weeks, a number of emotions and experiences have passed us by; excitement, frustration, pleasure, anguish, enthusiasm, stress, and so much more. But we were passionate, and it is that passion that we experiences that led to many triumphs, and more problems. The problem for a start, that we found what we thought to be a brilliant solution, and could literally see nothing else in front of us. We saw the end product so clearly, so early on in the process, that we didn’t want to let go. Like an elderly woman that clings to the back of sinking ship, knowing it is pulling her down as well as providing her with something to cling to. We did sink. And we ended up floating in a vast ocean of nothingness, not knowing which way to swim to get to a safe place. All the while we were sinking, there were other boats signaling to us to let go of the ship, jump in the water and find another vessel. But we found it a comfort to have something safe to hold on to. The comforting thing to know is that no-one drowned. For this is the arena to experiment, take risks, fall down and stand back up. And for all this, we learned. How to do it. And how not to. All this for the sake of something as dull and mundane as paper. It is something we are almost expert at now. We see paper everywhere, even in our dreams. There is a process for making paper, and there is a process for making a publication about paper. Both processes seemed very straightforward. The former was, and we thought the latter would be too. It turned out we were very wrong about the latter. To have an idea is a good thing, but one must be prepared to adapt the idea and not prevent

it from developing and growing up. This is the fundamental truth about the project and process that we have been on. You must be prepared to let them grow. Don’t snip them at the root and take them indoors, water them and let them blossom. Veronica Law at 20:14 i don’t know what to think. o_O.. to be honest, this is like one of those projects that you just go “heh” at the end and laugh about it since we went through alot ... but learnt A LOT of things about paper, printing, info graphics, technical issues, craft within the medium and this basically proves and shows what out project was about and it’s definitely not “COLD” like our info graphics at all. Maybe we’re analysing too much, but maybe we don’t even need to print it out. lol.. we could just show it haha and it might even become viral. well all i know is, nothing is lost and we still produced something which we liked. This is nothing more than a simple example of an idea published. Philip Linnemann at 20:15 Could everybody just go on skype? I know that this wouldn’t increase the word count but it will certainly be easier to agree on everything ;) Haobo Chen at 20:16 veroni’s last line is really good and true! Philip Linnemann at 20:18 I bet she put it in in case we chose to publish this ;) Veronica Law at 20:19 really well written louis.. seriously.. i liked it.. it sounded very poetic hehe Haobo Chen at 20:19
