FALL CHECKLIST Whether you live in Florida or Maine, there are a few things you should do to prepare for fall.

SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE Call your Rheem dealer and get your system checked out. Rheem dealers can work on most brands and they are highly trained and trusted.

CHECK YOUR SYSTEM Look for leaves and other airflow impairments within two feet of your system. CHANGE FILTERS Dirty filters are the #1 reason HVAC systems lose efficiency. Invest in high-efficiency filters to purify your home’s air and protect your system.

BE MORE EFFICIENT Check your windows, doors, and other places that air can escape and caulk or weatherstrip them to reduce drafts.

STAY MORE COMFORTABLE If you haven’t installed a smart thermostat such as a Rheem EcoNet, don’t keep putting it off. DO IT NOW!

HELLO, Who knows what this winter will bring?

H

ome generators are becoming increasingly popular and necessary as our weather becomes more extreme. During the last few years we’ve seen a substantial up-tick with many of our customers requesting information and installation on home generators. These aren’t clunky portable generators that fill the air with gas fumes and can only run a couple of appliances. Home generators supply power to your entire house quietly

and efficiently. The generator detects a power outage and kicks on with only a few seconds of lost power. The most important thing is getting the right generator for your home’s energy needs. That’s where we come in. Broadview Heating is South Cleveland’s expert in home generators, and we carry the Rheem brand, the best in the business. Of course, we also handle any other type of heating issues you may experience this winter, whether it’s routine maintenance, repairing your furnace, or replacing your entire HVAC system.

DON’T BE LEFT WITH A COLD Because today’s home are nearly air tight, it’s important to have a superior filtration system.

UV lights are affordable and can be installed in new or current HVAC systems. Your current or new HVAC system can help reduce bacteria in the air and the allergens that grow inside your HVAC system. By using UV lamps, particles and germs are destroyed and prevented from being recirculated to the air in your home. An ultraviolet light can now be installed

Reasons include radon and carbon dioxide as well as chemicals like formaldehyde used in making modern carpeting, draperies, and household cleaners.

These problems can lead to eye irritation, sinus congestion, sneezing, runny nose, stuffiness, colds, flu, headaches, dizziness, outbreaks of allergies and asthma, sore throats, and various other respiratory ailments.

Other air quality problems include airborne pollutants

in most existing central HVAC systems and is a must for new system installation. This is definitely NOT a DIY project due to the danger of electrical shock. For cleaner air, trust an Ultraviolet Treatment System from Rheem.

TIME FOR A NEW FURNACE?

Investing in a furnace with better technology and efficiency will save you hundreds of dollars every year.

W

hen a furnace loses or wastes heat, more energy is required to keep your home warm. Some furnaces lose heat through the walls of the furnace cabinet. Energy-efficient furnaces like the Rheem full line of state-of-the-art models significantly reduce this loss with a blanket of insulation that lines the inside of the cabinet walls. Heating is the largest energy expense in most homes, accounting for 35–50 percent of annual energy bills in colder parts of the country, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.

When gas furnaces are not in operation, most send a steady, wasteful draft of warm household air up the venting system and out the roof. Many Rheem furnaces feature a blower that keeps warm air in the ducts, meaning you don’t get that initial blast of cold air when your system cycles on. Pilot lights can also be wasteful. A furnace with an electronic ignition eliminates the need for a constantly burning pilot. Newer furnaces with electronic ignition systems have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 94 percent or higher and can run up to 15 percent more efficiently than standard models. The most efficient furnaces trap the

energy of the hot vent gases, which can reach temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit or more. A high-efficiency furnace generally has a higher price tag, but it can make up the difference by reducing operating costs over the long run. And with today’s consumer interest in efficiency, such equipment enhances the value of your home.

SMART HOME

Broadview Heating President Tom Olecki answers your questions about heating and cooling. Look for Tom’s monthly column in the Richfield Times and the Brecksville/ Broadview Gazette. Every year we are faced with the inevitable task of preparing for the coming winter weather season. Cooler weather is showing its face and we will soon be calling on our heating systems to go back to work for us. The change of seasons requires us to prepare our heating systems for the long, cold winter ahead, and although I written on this topic every fall these checks need to be completed before you click the thermostat to heat. If you think you are done using the air conditioner, it is a good idea to turn off its breaker or fuse. If you don’t, the small amount of heat generated in the air conditioner makes a perfect home for mice in the winter. Should they nest in the A/C unit they can do quite a bit of damage to the wiring or insulation. Also, now is a good time to install the cover on the A/C. Remember, do not wrap it in plastic. Use a quality custom cover that breathes or even just a piece of plywood on top to help keep out the snow and leaves. Change the filter in the furnace if it is a throw-away style. If it is a washable style, simply hose it off or use a mild detergent if it has greasy dust. If you have a humidifier, some styles have a damper in them that should be reset to the winter position. Humidifiers also require cleaning once a year and

12

MOOD Magazine · October 2016

replacement of the pad or waterpanel. If it has a manual humidity control, turn it on and set it for 35 percent humidity. Make sure the area around the furnace is uncongested and nothing is leaning against the furnace or restricting airflow to it. If you have an electronic or programmable thermostat, change its batteries and don’t forget to check or replace the batteries in the smoke or CO detector. If your furnace has plastic exhaust pipes that exit through the side of the house, make sure they are clear of vegetation and that wasps have not built a nest in them over the summer. It is highly recommended you have your system professionally serviced at least once per year. This allows the furnace to run at peak efficiency and will ensure it is operating safely. It doesn’t matter when it is inspected, just have it done once a year. Finally, go ahead and turn the furnace on now to make sure it works before you really need it.

Home Power Homeowners are turning to powerful generators for comfort and safety

HOME GENERATORS

500,000 American households lose power every day

Installation of home generators, the kind that power your entire home during power outages, is skyrocketing in the United States. These are not gasspewing portable generators. These run quietly and are wired to the electrical system in your home. Homeowners are installing these power

systems in new and existing homes to keep their family safe and comfortable during power outages caused by storms and other disasters.

Home generators detect power outages and kick on automatically in only a few seconds. When power is restored, they turn off. They can

Rheem sells top-ofthe-line generators and your local Rheem contractor may be able to install one for you or recommend someone.

SMART MONEY

Two-thirds of new HVAC systems are financed, often with cost savings.

Generators installed as low as $75.00 per month, or get 18 months deferred interest. Broadview Heating 440-526-7310

The majority of homeowners finance their new HVAC system. By offsetting the monthly payment with the energy savings, financing a new air-conditioning or heating system can be a lot less expensive than most people think. New systems are 30 to 40 percent more efficient than systems 10 years or

older. If the cost to finance a new HVAC system is $120 a month, that system could save you $60 or more, basically making half the monthly payment for you. With those savings and the lack of repairs, should be able to recover your investment in about five to seven years.
